Top 10 public speaking movies

The king’s speech (2010).

Got stage fright before a talk? You have royal company. This film follows the struggles of King George VI, played by Colin Firth, as he works to overcome his lifelong fear of public speaking . The movie is set during a critical moment in history. Viewers will observe how King George VI had to learn to rise to the occasion and give inspiring speeches as the leader of a country battling for its future.

The film is an inspiring and poignant story of the power of courage and determination, and has earned a lot of awards, including an Oscar for Best Picture. The powerful narrative of this inspiring biopic is great viewing for anyone who is looking to overcome their fear of public speaking . One critic writes of it , “The film is richly rooted, with splendid trappings, including pea-soup fogs. For all the pomp and protocol, it’s an intimate story about a scared man who must find his voice if he is to rise, in regal stature, above his epaulets.”

Dead Poets Society (1989)

What makes a great speech? For many, it is having confidence in yourself. John Keating (Robin Williams) is the new English teacher at an all-boys preparatory school. He has an unorthodox approach to teaching, and his classes focus on public speaking and self-confidence, with an emphasis on using body language for effective public speaking. As the movie develops, Keating encourages his students, such as Neil Perry (Robert Sean Leonard) and Todd Anderson (Ethan Hawke), to break away from their parents’ expectations and pursue their own dreams. He guides the students to be comfortable talking in front of others, to take risks and to seize each day.

With Keating’s guidance, the students gain courage and determination to follow their dreams and reach for their goals. The movie is ultimately an inspiring story that encourages viewers to be brave and to always strive for the best.

Toast (2010)

Coming from the United Kingdom, this movie follows Nigel Slater (Freddie Highmore), who has dreams to become a great chef, despite his mother (Victoria Hamilton) being only capable of making toast. His life is thrown into chaos when his mother passes away and his father (Ken Stott) remarries a woman (Helena Bonham Carter) who wins his heart with a delightful lemon meringue pie. Nigel then begins his journey to fulfill his aspirations, enrolling in culinary school, working in a pub and finding himself competing with his stepmother – both in the kitchen and in vying for his father’s admiration. According to LA Times film critic Gary Goldstein, “Toast, is by turns sweet and tart, airy and rich and, above all, a thoroughly irresistible confection.”

This film is a great example to draw upon in terms of public speaking, as it strives to highlight the importance of the pursuit of passions and the ever-present obstacles that need to be overcome along the way. These messages can be incredibly valuable for any aspiring public speaker, as they provide an inspiring reminder to strive for success in spite of any difficulties that may lie in their path.

Rocket Science (2007)

Hal Hefner (Reece Daniel Thompson), a high-school student, is struggling to make sense of his disjointed life. But when Ginny Ryerson (Anna Kendrick), a pretty classmate, asks him to join their school’s debate team, Hal embarks on a journey that will teach him how to overcome his stutter and gain confidence in public speaking . Falling in love with Ginny along the way, Hal faces a variety of challenges that ultimately help him to become an effective speaker and give him the courage to express himself in a clear and powerful way. According to Washington Post film critic Jen Chaney, “Writer-director Jeffrey Blitz brings wit and pathos to the story of a compulsive stutterer.”

Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

Extremely shy Lars (Ryan Gosling) struggles to make friends or socialize due to social anxiety. His family (Paul Schneider and Emily Mortimer) are concerned for him, when he announces he has a girlfriend he met online. But to their surprise, his new girlfriend is actually a life-size plastic figure. On the advice of a doctor (Patricia Clarkson), his family and the community decide to go along with his wild delusion.

This film is set to inspire viewers to come out of their shells and face public speaking fears. According to David Lamble of the Bay Area Reporter , “Director Craig Gillespie’s film stirs a cautious course between Capraesque whimsy and our society’s distinct discomfort confronting the sad and sometimes squalid delusions that keep our boats afloat.”

The Great Debaters (2007)

“The Great Debaters” starring Denzel Washington showcases the power of public speaking to fight for justice and equality, highlighting how anyone can use it to their advantage. By following the journey of a professor at a small African American college in Texas who creates a debate team to challenge Harvard, viewers can learn how essential public speaking is to making a change, and empower themselves to develop their own skills in this field.

If you decide to take part in a community-based or college class on public speaking, the cost can be low to no cost. For example,  online options such as edX  and Coursera offer a class  from Harvard on the art of rhetoric and the University of Washington’s Intro to Public Speaking course for free.

A public speaking class can be life changing. To that end, the Speaker Lab is currently offering a f ree training that has helped thousands of students earn anywhere from $500-$50,000, without being a celebrity. You can learn the same 5-step system Grant Baldwin used to grow his speaking business to over $2 million in revenue during the recession of 2008. Furthermore, you can glean tips on how savvy speakers are charging higher fees to be a keynote speaker . There is also an opportunity for a Q&A where you can ask any of your speaking business questions from one of our public speaking coaches. Interested in signing up to become a better speaker? Public Speaking (2010)

A feature-length documentary starring Fran Lebowitz, a writer known for her incisive take on modern life, will provide invaluable insight into public speaking. The film skillfully weaves together HER extemporaneous monologues and archival footage, creating a compelling portrait of how to convey a message through an engaging and unique perspective. With this film, viewers will gain insight into public speaking by learning directly from the masterful delivery of Fran Lebowitz. According to David Fear of Time Out, “By the end of this funny, insightful doc, you get a sense of an extraordinary mind that both fueled and fed the zeitgeist.”

Voiz (1998)

Iskander, a gentle Uzbek man, is coaxed by a Russian friend to step out of his comfort zone and wow the local crowd with a complimentary, impromptu speech honouring the Communist Revolution. His passionate delivery, combined with his eloquence, not only wins over the Soviets, who enlist him as a spokesman, but will also serve as a great inspiration to anyone looking to improve their public speaking abilities. Watch as Iskander bravely takes a stand in a turbulent time through an inspirational speech and offers an example of excellence in rhetoric.

The Address (2014)

This movie gives a detailed insight into the Greenwood School in Putney Vermont, and how its students are prepared for public speaking by memorizing and reciting President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Through its exploration of the school, the film unlocks the history and importance of this powerful address, giving viewers the opportunity to improve their public speaking skill and gain a greater understanding of its historical context. According to Matt Zoller Seitz of New York Magazine, “its relaxed vibe and non-cloying tone are a tonic.”

Larry Crowne (2011)

This film, starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, can help improve your public speaking skill. Larry Crown, the former sailor now manager, is an example of how education can make a difference.

Through Mercedes Teno’s classes, viewers will learn how to apply improvisational techniques, structure and organize a presentation, and create an effective visual contact with the audience. They can also use the film’s example to practice and hone their public speaking abilities – by presenting to someone close to them. The film is an invaluable resource for those looking to gain confidence in their public speaking abilities.

Have you ever considered what makes watching a movie so exciting? It's not just about the story; it's also about how it's presented to us. Let's explore the fascinating world of movie presentation! Imagine sitting in a cozy movie theater, popcorn in hand, waiting for the film to begin. But wait, what's that on the screen? It's not just the movie; it's the whole experience, the way the images, sounds, and colors come together to tell a story. Now, think about your favorite movie. What do you remember most about it? Was it the thrilling action scenes, the heartfelt moments, or maybe the unexpected plot twists? Whatever it is, chances are, the movie presentation played a big part in making it memorable. How can you elaborate on the exact idea of the movie presentation? Movie presentation refers to the art and technique of showcasing a film to an audience. It encompasses visual effects, sound design, and storytelling techniques. The intention is to improve the audience's cinematic experience by captivating and involving them.

Be that as it may, presentation is essential to success in the dynamic world of movie production . It's not merely about showcasing a film but weaving a compelling narrative that captivates audiences and stakeholders. Movie presentation transcends the screen, influencing perceptions and shaping the trajectory of projects and careers.

The 20 Best Movies For English Learners

Olly Richards Headshot

“What movie should I watch to improve my English?”

How many times have you asked yourself that question?

In this post I'll recommend 20 movies for English learners.

But before I do that, let me tell you that if you're a movie lover who wants to improve your English skills through movies, you MUST check out Cara Leopold's website .

Cara is the most qualified and passionate English teacher I know who can help you improve your English listening and conversational skills through films.

That said, let's dive into the 20 best movies for English learners.

For a quick overview, or to skip to the movie that interests you most, check out the table of contents below. Otherwise, keep scrolling to discover these movies for English learners.

Table of Contents

1. forrest gump (1994).

“Forrest Gump” is one of my favourite movies. I watched it when I was a child, when I was a teenager and I watched it last week too.

This is a heartwarming and iconic film that will take you on a journey through the extraordinary life of Forrest Gump, the main character played by a young Tom Hanks.

The plot unfolds as Forrest tells his life story to strangers while sitting on a park bench.

You’ll see Forrest being bullied, becoming a ping pong champion, falling in love, fighting in the Vietnam War, running nonstop around the world and embarking on many other amazing adventures.

The movie is set in Alabama, US, so the characters speak with a southern American accent. I don’t think you’ll have a lot of trouble understanding Forrest as he speaks slowly and uses simple language.

In general, the dialogues contain a lot of common phrases in English that can be useful to improve your conversational English skills .

The story also covers important events, so you can learn about the history and culture of the US while practicing your listening skills.

Highly recommended.

2.The Lion King (1994)

I’m sure you’ve already seen this movie. “The Lion King” is one of the most popular animated movies by Walt Disney.

The main character is Simba, a young lion who goes through a lot of adventures to become king. You’ll meet his girlfriend, friends, family members and enemies.

All of them are animals, of course. In fact, you’ll only see animals from Africa in the film: lions, zebras, hyenas, monkeys, tucans, warthogs, meerkats, and many others.

What makes it a good movie for learning English? It’s animated, so you’ll be able to match characters and actions with the dialogue. This can also help you understand the story even if there are some words you don't know.

And if you’re up for an extra challenge, you can go to the theatre to see the musical . I saw it in London in December 2022 and will never forget it!

3.The Truman Show (1998)

If you're learning English, “The Truman Show” is a movie you should definitely check out.

You’ll see a guy named Truman, played by Jim Carrey, who discovers that his whole life is actually a TV show. Everyone around him is acting and nothing is real.

How would you react if you found out your best friend has been following a script? I’d be devastated!

The story is interesting and funny (the best Jim Carrey from the 90s is the main character – how could this movie not be funny?!).

It’s a thought-provoking movie too as it delves into the ethical implications of manipulating someone's life for entertainment.

“The Truman Show” was released in 1998 but the theme is still very much relevant today. There’s definitely a lot that this movie will make you think about.

But what about the language? Since it all revolves around Truman's life being broadcasted on TV, you’ll get exposed to a lot of everyday expressions and hear people talking like they would in real life.

That's super helpful for expanding your colloquial English.

4.Big Fish (2003)

“Big Fish” is a movie by Tim Burton, a renowned film director in the US.

Picture this: there's a guy named Will, played by Ewan McGregor, who goes to see his dying father, Edward. The storyline unfolds as Will grapples with his father's wild and unbelievable stories about his life.

The cool thing for you as a learner is that this movie is narrated. You’ll hear Edward talking about his adventures in a slow and clear way. This can give you a break from speedy conversations.

Just a heads up, though: Edward has a bit of a different accent because he's from Alabama in the southern U.S. It might sound a bit strange at first, but don't worry – you'll get used to it as you watch.

5. Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

In this film, you’ll follow Harold Crick, played by Will Ferrell. Harold is just a regular tax man with a pretty ordinary life. But one day, he starts hearing a voice. Not just any voice – it's a voice narrating every little thing he does.

Imagine someone narrating your morning routine. How annoying would that be? Incredibly annoying if you’re a person like my partner: she hates people in the morning!

Like “Big Fish”, the cool part for you as a learner is that when Emma Thompson, the narrator, talks about Harold's actions, she speaks slowly and clearly.

This is like a helpful English lesson within the movie as you can associate the language of the narrator with the actions of the actor.

If you're up for a quirky and interesting story that also helps you with your English, “Stranger Than Fiction” is definitely the way to go.

6. Cast Away (2006)

In “Cast Away”, Tom Hanks plays Chuck Noland, a guy who works for FedEx and travels the world. Chuck's life takes a dramatic turn when his plane crashes somewhere in the South Pacific.

Don’t worry, Chuck doesn’t die. But he finds himself on this deserted island.

“Who’s he going to talk to? Is this a silent film?” you may wonder.

It’s not. Chuck has a talking buddy: his name is Wilson. The problem, however, is that Wilson can’t talk. Not because he has some sort of speech problems but because he doesn’t have a mouth. Wilson is a volleyball.

Can you guess why this is an awesome movie for you as a learner? For a big chunk of the movie, you’ll only hear Chuck talking to himself (okay, and to Wilson too). So there’s no fast-talking conversation between different people. You’ll only hear one man speaking.

It’s like listening to a monologue.  This can help you adjust to the accent of the main character so you might be able to understand more and more as you go along with the story.

Enjoy the simplicity!

7. Fight Club (1999)

This is a cult movie. It’s a dark and thought-provoking exploration of modern consumerism and society.

The main character is played by Edward Norton. He's the average American citizen who’s drowning in the monotony of daily life. He’s also the nameless narrator in the movie.

Then you have the handsome Brad Pitt from the late 90s, who plays Tyler Durden. Tyler isn’t your typical buddy though; he's a man that’s got some rebellious ideas and a keen interest in creating chaos.

Together, Tyler and Edward create an underground club where men meet up to punch each other. Not your usual weekend pastime, I guess.

Some people (me) are into stories and language learning , some others like less intellectual activities – that’s the beauty of living in the world of humans.

Anyway, this secret club becomes a space where men challenge the rules of society. The club has a clear rule and you may know what this is already as it became a famous catchphrase.

It goes like this: “The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club.” (I just hope Tyler doesn’t mind me blogging about it.)

Although this is a challenging film as it contains slang and colloquial expressions (it all takes place in an urban setting), this is another great movie for you as the narrator talks to you directly.

And if you read the book “Fight Club” is based on, you may enjoy the story even more. Whether you decide to watch this film or not, please don’t punch anyone.

Be an Olly, not a Tyler.

8. Stand By Me (1986)

This is a timeless film based on Stephen King's novella “The Body.”

The story takes place in the summer of 1959 and revolves around four young American friends – Gordie, Chris, Teddy, and Vern. They go on a mission to find the body of a local boy who went missing.

Will they find him? I can’t tell you.

This is a good movie if you’re learning English because the events are narrated by Gordie. You won’t hear the voice of a young boy though. Gordie narrates the story from his adult perspective so this can give you a break from listening to dialogue all the time.

“Stand By Me” is another great choice for a movie if you want to improve your English.

9. Braveheart (1995)

Freeeeeeeeeeeeedooooom!  Albaaaa gu bràààààààààààth!

Oh man, I had to stop writing this post to watch the motivational speech William Wallace gave to his men before the battle against the English army.

“Braveheart” is one of my all-time favourites. It tells the story of William Wallace, a quiet Scotsman who wants to live a peaceful life in his little village among the hills of medieval Scotland. William wouldn’t hurt a fly.

So why does he turn into a furious bloodthirsty rebel fighting against the English for freedom? I won’t spoil it for you. You’ll have to find out by yourself!

“Braveheart” is great if you’d like to expose yourself to the Scottish accent, one that even some native speakers of English find hard to understand.

The story is set in the Great Britain of medieval times so you’ll also get plenty of Queen-like British pronunciation and expressions. Forget about modern suburban British slang !

Five Oscars, a great story and an even greater Mel Gibson.

Two words: watch it.

10. The King's Speech (2010)

I remember seeing this in a cinema as soon as it came out.

This is a historical drama set in the 1930s that talks about the inspiring true story of Prince Albert.

Prince Albert is about to become king. But he has a problem: he suffers from a severe speech impediment.

I’ve never been a king but I wouldn’t want to be in such a high position of authority and not be able to speak clearly, naturally and fluently. I’m sure you wouldn’t either.

So what does Albert do? He seeks the help of an unorthodox speech therapist, Lionel Logue.

Don’t be too sorry for the king though because his stammer is great news for you! You’ll get to see a movie where the main character doesn’t speak at the speed of light!

The film also offers you a glimpse into the historical and cultural context of 20th-century Britain and exposes you to some formal language typical of the Royals.

And it’s a movie I’d personally rewatch too.

11. Home Alone (1990)

“Home Alone” has become a holiday classic to watch over and over during the Christmas period.

The movie is about 8-year-old Kevin McCallister, who accidentally gets left behind when his family goes on vacation for Christmas.

Kevin doesn’t mind though. In fact, he’s over the moon he hasn’t got his family members around the house anymore! He’s now free and feels proud for having made his family disappear.

But then things change when Kevin has to defend his house against burglars Harry and Marv.

This is a great movie for learners of English for two reasons.

  • Reason 1: the plot is simple. You don’t need to get your head around any intricate sequences of events.
  • Reason 2: Most of the time you’ll see only Kevin talking. He’s an 8-year-old so the language he uses is fairly straightforward.

I watch “Home Alone” at least once a year. This is a movie you simply can’t miss, especially at Christmas time!

12. Inside Out (2015)

“Inside Out” is the story of Riley, an 11-year-old girl, who goes through major life changes when her family moves to a new city.

Most of the story takes place inside Riley’s mind, where Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust live.

These five “people” living in her head are her emotions. Anger is the red one. Joy is yellow and she’s as bright as the sun. Sadness is blue and always depressed. Fear is purple and he’s the one who prevents Riley from getting into trouble.

And then you have Disgust. She’s green and was born when Riley ate Broccoli for the first time. Each emotion influences Riley’s actions and memories.

Isn’t this intriguing already?

“Inside Out” is truly a clever animated movie that will make you think about the nature of human psychology.

It’s also a great film for improving your English as the characters speak with a clear and expressive American accent.

And because the dialogue is cleverly written to reflect the distinct personalities of each emotion, you’ll get a lot of opportunities to notice how different intonation patterns are used in English .

Want to sound angry? Listen closely to how Anger speaks. Want to sound sad? Tune in to Sadness’ speech and mimic her accent.

I’m sure you’ll love “Inside Out” no matter how old you are.

13. The Hole (2001)

“The Hole” is a psychological thriller that centres around four teenagers – Liz, Mike, Geoff, and Martyn – who decide to spend a weekend exploring an abandoned underground bunker.

What a group of naughty teens. They think nothing bad can happen to them. And nothing indeed happens – until they get trapped inside the bunker.

Spoiler alert: you’ll see disgusting scenes and some of them can be quite disturbing.  So this isn’t a movie for you if you’re not into this kind of film experience.

The film also contains scenes of sex, nudity, violence, gore, and profanity. This is a movie for adults only!

So why would such content make a great movie for learners then?

Like many other films I discussed in this post, the plot is simple and most of the story takes place in a bunker. Plus, you only have a bunch of characters to listen to. All this makes it easier for you to understand.

Let me warn you one more time though: this is not a movie for kids!

14. The Cube (1997)

This is a science fiction horror film. In the opening scene, you’ll see a group of five strangers awakening to find themselves trapped in a mysterious cube-shaped room.

Each person has a skill. Quentin is a police officer, Holloway is a doctor, Worth is an architect, Leaven is a math student and Rennes is an escape artist.

They soon discover that each room has doors on its six faces and each door leads to other cube-shaped rooms.

But here’s what’s interesting: some of these rooms contain lethal traps. So be ready to see some gory scenes!

This is a relatively easy movie to watch as you have few characters to listen to and only one location (the cube). You’ll also get plenty of breaks from listening as the movie contains many scenes of suspense.

15. Jumanji (1995)

“Jumanji” is a light adventure comedy movie filled with action that you might have already seen in your first language. This is one of my favourites too, not least because the great Robbie Williams is in it.

The film tells the story of two siblings, Judy and Peter, who discover a magical board game in the attic of their new house. The board game is called Jumanji and brings its dangers, past players and wild creatures into the real world.

The dialogue is fairly accessible if you’re an intermediate learner so I think you’ll be able to enjoy it.

16. Titanic (1997)

Okay, who hasn’t seen this? We all know the story of the unsinkable ship that sank in 1912.

Titanic is a movie that can really help you get exposed to lots of dialogue. You may learn some formal expressions from the first-class passengers and some more colloquial language from the third-class travellers.

It’s 3-hour long so it might be tiring to watch if you’re an intermediate learner. But I would recommend it anyway, especially if you’ve already seen it in your first language.

17. The Invention of Lying (2009)

Imagine a world where everyone tells the truth and lies don’t exist. If your colleagues think you’re a terrible human being, they won’t lie to you – they’ll tell you! How weird would such a world be?

In “The Invention of Lying”, Mark Bellison, played by the hilarious Ricky Gervais, lives in the most honest world you could ever imagine. But he then discovers how lying can change everything.

This is a great and original comedy movie that will help you expand your repertoire of conversational English expressions because most of the conversations take place in informal settings.

You’ll also get exposed to a mix of British and American accents.

Watch out for Riky’s distinctive glottal stop though. That could be tricky to understand. I’m not lying!

18. The Shining (1980)

A cult, a masterpiece, a blockbuster movie, a work of art, a gem – I don’t know what else to say. This is a fantastic horror movie for learners of English.

“The Shining” is story of a family – Jack, Wendy, and their son Danny – who go to an empty and isolated hotel in the mountains during winter.

Jack is a writer struggling with writer’s block. He gets a job as the caretaker, hoping to use the quiet time to write his novel.

Danny, Jack and Wendy’s son, has a special power called “the shining” that makes him have scary visions. Plus, the hotel has some spooky things going on. That’s enough to make you shiver.

But there’s more. As the winter goes on, Jack starts acting really strange and you’ll soon discover that the hotel has a creepy history that affects the whole family.

Like many other movies I discussed in this post, The Shining follows the story of few characters, the plot is simple and there’s not a lot of dialogue (but many creepy scenes!).

This is a perfect combination of ingredients that will make the movie a suitable for you as an English language learner.

And, in my opinion, you’ll see the best Jack Nicholson acting performance.

19. Robin Hood (1973)

This is a classic animated film by Walt Disney that you can watch and enjoy with your family.

The movie tells the timeless tale of Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men in the animal kingdom. They have one mission: standing up against the greedy Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham.

To be honest, “Robin Hood” isn’t an easy one to understand if you’re an intermediate learner.

But I decided to include it in this list because Robin Hood is a folk hero from the Middle Ages in England. So watching this movie can help you connect with English culture and literature.

Also, the characters speak a variety of British accents so you can get exposed to the diversity of English pronunciation.

Check the trailer and see how challenging this movie is for you.

20. The Terminator (1984)

If you say you’ve never seen this movie, sorry but…I don’t believe you!

The Terminator is a story about a robot sent from the future, played by the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger, to kill (or “terminate” I should say) a woman named Sarah.

But, surprise! A warrior from the future, Kyle, comes to the present to keep Sarah safe.

There’s lots of action and shooting and running away in this movie – probably more action than dialogue, so this can help you appreciate the story more.

Also, Arnold’s Teutonic accent makes him easy to understand. (Arnold is a non-native speaker of English – did you know that?)

The Best Movies For English Learners

So, as you can see from this list of best movies for English learners, there’s one for every taste.

If you can’t enjoy the movie because it’s too hard for you to understand, I suggest that you find something more suitable for your level. Check out the best TV shows to learn English for ideas. Or follow the rules of StoryLearning and read short stories in English instead.

Otherwise, here are some ways to increase your understanding:

  • Watch the same scene more than once.
  • Watch the movie with subtitles first and then rewatch them without subtitles.
  • Watch only one minute of the movie and try to understand as much as you can.
  • Check out Cara’s YouTube channel !

Whatever you do, don’t feel discouraged, and keep on exposing your brain to English.

More importantly, keep learning while having fun!

15 Best Movie Speeches of All Time

of 15 Best Movie Speeches of All Time

Dialogues and speeches are the string, which binds the beads of a good cinema. Acting, cinematography, production they can all fall apart if the writing sucks. There are so many movies with great stories who aren’t impactful, because of lame dialogues. On the other hand, people remember even mediocre movies because of a powerful speech. These speeches are so inspirational that they make the listener believe that anything’s possible. The sheer power of words is strong enough to move mountains. In these speeches, the speaker enthralls the audience with his wisdom and experience and motivates them to carry out the impossible in life. We, at the Cinemaholic, made a list of top movie speeches ever that will inspire you. Be ready to get motivated!

15. Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End (2007) – “Hoist The Colours”

Consider this. A fleet of pirate ship have been surrounded by the elite force of Her Majesty’s Royal Navy. The pirates are broken, without any command and their faith lies in their pirate queen Elizabeth who probably due to a turn of fate, became their leader. Tricked into a cornered position, by a cunning lord Beckett, she is left with no choice but retaliate with whatever she has. And she choses this moment to rise to the occasion. She thunders at her fellow pirates, asking them to fight like free men and not surrender meekly like cowards. And it resonates with pirates, irrespective of their clans and they roar as every version of Jolly Roger starts flying high in the wind.

14. V For Vendetta (2005) – “The Revolutionary Speech”

Just like Hitler crafted a dictatorship, disguised within a so-called superior race driven government, in a not so distant future version of London, the chancellor Adam Sutler formed a reign where in the name of security, privacy was looted. In return of order and peace to the society, the people traded their foremost weapon – consent. In the garb of protecting the people, the reigning government unleashed tyranny and oppression. In such times, one fine day, every TV gets tuned into a channel where a man wearing a Guy Fawkes mask speaks to them. He reminds them of Guy Fawkes, who brought a revolution to the people 400 years ago. To end this cruelty and meek submission, he asks everyone to join him in exactly one year later, on 5th of September on the gates of the Parliament. This speech sets in motion, of the events of ‘V for Vendetta’.

13. The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013) – “I’m not fuckin’ leaving”

The high flying, corrupt and megalomaniac Jordan Belfort is finally caught and as a part of the deal with the FBI, he’s supposed to leave Stratton Oakmont and never ever indulge in the market of share trading, which made him so rich. He appears in his office and makes an announcement about his stepping down from the company, in front of his beleaguered colleagues. He explains his pain in leaving them in lurch and how he’s going to miss them all. While talking about their collective effort to make money overcoming their individual struggles in life, all of sudden he realizes, this is place where he belongs after all. And despite the warning of FBI, he screams his lungs out – ‘I’m not fuckin’ leaving !!’

12. Rocky Balboa (2006) – “It ain’t about how hard you hit”

Rocky Balboa is an ageing boxer, who has left the sport, only to come back to it again. His wife’s dead and his son is sick and tired of the name and pressure of being related to Rocky. His father’s fame has started to affect him professionally and personally as well. So he gets the news of his arthritic father, gearing up for another bout of boxing, he discourages him by stating his example of being a failure, despite of being a Balboa. Rocky thunders when he says, ‘It’s ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.’ He asks him to stop blaming others for his failure. It’s an moving speech with some profound advice for life. Life’s meant to be unfair and its sole plan is to keep you down. Instead of cribbing, you’ve to accept your loses and move forward. That’s how you win.

11. Any Given Sunday (1999) – “Life’s a game of inches”

Before an all important play off game, coach D’Amato, played by Al Pacino gathers around his players. Through many difficulties and infightings, they’ve reached a place where one mistake can cost them everything. He begins the talk with comparing their current position to being in a shit hole and it’s totally up to them to get beat the shit out of themselves or fight hard to come back. He cites his own example of being a broken man who lost money, family and himself for taking bad decisions in life. But life is just like a game of football . It’s all about the margin of error. Just like a game of football, where once one starts losing, he gets the drift of the game and then tries crawl into those inches. He urges them to come together as a team and win it for themselves.

10. Wall Street (1987) – “Greed, for lack of a better word, is Good”

Wall street is about money. Wall street is about power. Wall street is about greed. And greed, ladies and gentlemen, for the lack of a better word, is good. That’s what Gordon Gekko believed in. In a speech to the investors of a loss making paper company Teldar, he explains meticulously that the sole reason the company lost so much of money is because of inefficient people at the top and not because he broke the company to pieces. He argues that his greed of making money actually liberates loss making industries. Greed is an evolutionary trait and it’s greed which has made man go for more, be it knowledge, technology or profit. It’s an amazing take on something which itself is labelled as a biblical sin. Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko, gives an amazing performance.

9. Dead Poet’s Society (1989) – “Carpe Diem, seize the day boys”

In a school, where discipline is revered, a new English teacher comes in a breather among the strict disciplinarians. To a motley group of students, he reaches out and asks them to come out of their shell. He tells them to live their lives in their own way and not to someone’s expectations. One’s life duration is limited and eventually everyone will die. What will be left, is his legacy. So instead of living a dull life, one should do something to make it extraordinary. That’s the essence of Carpe Diem. The character of John Keating was played by the late Robin Williams , who demonstrates the importance of individuality to the students through this inspiring speech. He inspires them to be achieve greatness rather than to be successful.

8. Remember The Titans (2000) – “Take a lesson from the dead”

At the heights of racism, a black man is appointed as the head coach of a school, where traditionally it’s usually filled up by a white man. Tackling racism and discrimination at every step, coach Boone takes up the challenge. The team suffers from racially motivated conflicts and its success is deterred due to the ever meddling school authorities. Coach Boone takes everything to his stride and takes his team through a gruelling schedule of training at the Gettysburg cemetery where thousands of men died during the battle of Gettysburg. Through this speech, he asks his team to learn from those people, who laid their lives while fighting for each other. He urges them to be better by coming together and play as one team. His speech motivates his team to achieve success. Denzel Washington plays coach Boone in the sports drama ‘Remember The Titans’.

7. Braveheart (1995) – “They may take our lives, but they’ll never take our freedom”

In an English ruled Scotland, a young William Wallace witnesses the English massacring his family. He flees from the country only to return as a rebel who takes charge to lead the rebellion against the English. As he leads a rag-tag army of Scottish peasants and farmers, he asks them to fight as free men, against the enormous English army. When somebody from the army says that it’s better to hide and live than to fight and die, Wallace roars back by saying that the enemy may take their lives but they will never be able to take their freedom. Mel Gibson acted as well as directed this film, which went on to win five academy awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

6. Scent Of A Woman (1992) – “When shit hits the fan, some guys run and some guys stay”

At the Baird school, which traditionally has given the country many leaders and achievers, a disciplinary meeting takes place, for an act of mischief. While the reason remains trivial at its best, the focus shifts to two persons, who were supposed to be the witnesses of the events. One of those witnesses is a boy, whose father is a key figure in the school management. Hence he gets off the hook, after naming the suspects. Naturally it’s the other guy Charlie, who despite of being innocent, gets to take the blame. And it almost happens but for the presence of Lt Colonel Frank Slade. He makes his point that while everyone chose to be indifferent to the situation, Charlie showed integrity by not behaving as a snitch. And this is the stuff leaders are made of. Al Pacino played Lt Colonel Slade and gave a performance of a lifetime.

5. Independence Day (1996) – “Today, we celebrate our independence day”

While the world burns and is at the mercy of aliens, it comes down to a few brave men who decide to join forces to fight against the aliens. After repeated attempts of failure, a final assault is planned in the lines of a kamikaze attack, similar to a suicide mission. The president, himself a pilot mans the mission. Before they leave the base, he reminds them that this mission, incidentally to commence on 4th of July will be the biggest battle of their lives. And should they win, it will no longer be an American holiday. Rather it will be the day, when the world will be liberated of their common enemy. It shall be the world’s independence day. It’s a speech that evokes thunderous applause from everyone, as their belief in their leader becomes firm.

4. Network (1976) – “I’m mad as hell and am not going to take it anymore”

News these days, are more of shock inducing and eye grabbing details rather than journalism based on facts. In ‘Network’, a TV network’s struggle with declining viewership turns into a full-blown war when its own people start making factory made shows to get ratings. The movie is primarily about how TV controls the life and through it audio-visual medium, can sway public opinion about everything. In a way, this is what controls the masses today. When the veteran news anchor Howard Beale screams at his viewers to shout that they’ re mad as hell and are not going to take it anymore, he vents out his frustration at the growing influence of TV on the people. He cites example of life going astray while the TV shows paint a rosy picture. Many years later, as we see today, the real has imitated the reel and today literally the TV controls everything. This speech is truly pathbreaking.

3. The Shawshank Redemption (1994) – “Get busy living or get busy dying”

There’s nothing new that can be told about ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ . Arguably the best movie ever, this is Andy Dufresne’s story spanning across nineteen years in the infamous Shawshank penitentiary. While Andy makes the most out of his time at the prison doing various jobs, he also gets into a tiff with a corrupt warden over his discharge which leads him into a solitary confinement. When he’s out, his friend Red becomes afraid that this may break him forever. However a nonchalant Andy tells him about his dream destination and his wish to spend rest of his life there, thus explaining that life is all about hope and at times, it comes down to one simple choice – Get busy living or get busy dying. This speech is also a metaphor for being hopeful in the most hopeless of situations.

2. A Few Good Men (1992) – “You can’t handle the truth”

A soldier dies at GITMO base camp and the blame goes to couple of fellow soldiers as an act of negligence. While the soldiers plead that they were under order to punish the dying soldier, it comes down to one of the most laziest of military lawyers to take up their case. As the case reaches its final stage, upon repeated provocation from the defence lawyer, Colonel Nathan Jessup becomes enraged and tells that at times, despite being wrong, people need to take decision that may take one life but in return save thousands. Freedom comes at a price and being a provider of the same, that’s what entitles him to take decisions which may or may not be ethical. This’s the truth and that possibly cannot be fathomed by a layman. A stunning performance by Jack Nicholson !

1. The Great Dictator (1940)- “We think too much and feel too little”

Charlie Chaplin ’s ‘The Great Dictator’ is a political satire, in the garb of comedy and it condemns the ways of the contemporary dictators of the time, namely Hitler and Mussolini. A Jewish barber, who’s also a lookalike of the tyrant ruler of a fictional country gets to replace the dictator and ends up in a podium where he has to deliver a speech. He rises to the occasion when he tells his subjects that instead of ruling everyone as a dictator, he wants to help everyone. As human beings, one should rise above the ever engulfing greed. Though the world has progressed into future through numerous innovations, still it does distinguish people based on their caste, creed and colour. Humanity has been lost its meaning in the countless machinery that does our jobs. We’ve become cynical due to our ever growing penchant for knowledge. And that’s where we all lose as mankind.

The Best Projectors

Our two picks for best home projector for a living room, side by side with a vertical stack of DVDs in between.

By Adrienne Maxwell

Adrienne Maxwell is an editor covering AV gear. Her specialty is video projectors, so she spends a lot of time alone in dark rooms.

Different projectors are designed for different uses, and they can range in price from a couple hundred dollars to well into the five-figure range. Choosing the right model for your needs can be a daunting task, and we’re here to help.

Below is an overview of the top picks from our various projector guides. We have recommendations for premium 4K movie projectors , bright living-room projectors , budget home theater projectors , and more.

What you need to know

When shopping for projectors, don’t rely on the specs—especially the claimed brightness, which is often exaggerated.

If you want a big screen, you need a bright projector. Tiny projectors are not bright enough to deliver a big-screen, cinema-like experience.

Projectors, like TVs, are rarely set up to look their best right out of the box. Look for a picture mode called Cinema, Movie, or Natural.

We have projector recommendations for home theaters, living rooms, small spaces, outdoors, and portable use.

If you’re not sure where to begin your projector search, we recommend reading about how to pick the right projector for your viewing needs . In summary, you have three important questions to ask at the start: What do you plan to use the projector for? What type of room will you use it in? How big of a screen do you want?

There’s a huge difference in price and performance between a 4K projector designed for a big-screen home theater and a portable mini projector designed to be an everyday TV replacement. Some projectors excel with movies in a completely dark room, while others are better for sports or gaming in a room with some ambient light.

Generally, the bigger the screen you want, the brighter your projector must be to produce a satisfyingly rich image. Once you have a general idea of the projector’s intended use, it’s easier to zero in on a specific choice.

best movie for presentation

Epson Home Cinema LS11000

The best 4k projector under $5,000.

The LS11000 is a great 4K laser projector that can deliver a big, bright, beautiful image, and it has almost all the features you need—except 3D support.

Buying Options

If you want to set up a high-performance home theater in a basement or spare room and need a 4K projector that can handle high dynamic range video and wide-color-gamut material, choose the Epson Home Cinema LS11000 . This LCD laser projector offers a combination of performance and features that you won’t find in any other projector priced lower than $5,000. It’s an excellent 4K movie projector, but it also looks great with games, sports, and HDTV when some room lights are on.

Why we like it

  • The LS11000 has great detail, is bright enough to produce satisfying high dynamic range (HDR) video, and has wonderfully accurate color in the Natural picture mode.
  • This LCD projector uses a laser light source that should see you through the next decade (or longer), with no need to pay for replacement bulbs.
  • It's one of only a few 120-hertz projectors right now that has high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs to work with the most advanced 4K gaming consoles and any future 8K sources that might emerge.
  • A motorized lens with generous zoom and lens-shifting capabilities makes this projector easier to set up than many others.

The Epson Home Cinema LS11000, our pick for best 4K projector.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • The LS11000 doesn’t support 3D video playback, so people who have a large collection of 3D discs may want to look elsewhere.
  • Projectors aren’t bright enough to show HDR video at its full brightness, so they have to adjust the HDR signal to show it in the brightness range they’re capable of. The LS11000 does not do this automatically; you have to manually adjust the HDR brightness setting.

BenQ HT2060

The best budget projector around $1,000.

This projector produces a bright, rich-looking image with more accurate color than most competitors can offer. It’s easy to set up and quiet in operation, but it lacks features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

If you want to create a big-screen movie experience at home on a modest budget, the BenQ HT2060 is the best performer in the $1,000-and-under price range.

  • It offers great image contrast and color accuracy.
  • It’s bright enough to pair with a large screen for a more immersive home theater experience.
  • Out of the box this projector can produce a good image with very little adjustment, which means it’s good for people new to projectors.
  • It’s easy to set up and quiet in operation.

The BenQ HT2060 projector.

  • The HT2060 produced some digital noise in mid to dark grays during our tests.
  • It lacks features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and built-in streaming apps—but you can easily add those features by connecting a media streamer .
  • Because it uses DLP projection technology, some people might see the rainbow effect .

BenQ TK860i

The best 4k projector for a living room.

This 4K projector’s high light output, good-sounding speaker, and Android TV system make it a nice option for a living room.

The BenQ TK860i’s high brightness, rich color, razor-sharp image, and solid HDR performance are well suited for everyday TV and movie watching in a brighter viewing environment. It can’t compete with the best 4K home theater projector in contrast and accuracy, but its high brightness makes it a better choice for use in a living room or family room where you can’t block out all the light. If you'd prefer an LCD projector for a living room, the Epson Home Cinema 3800 is a great option, but it does not have a full 4K resolution.

  • The BenQ TK860i is quite bright, so the image will pop even in a room with a good amount of light.
  • The TK860i comes with an Android TV dongle that hides in a recessed chamber, and it gives you three additional HDMI 2.0 inputs to connect other video sources.
  • The built-in speakers sound fuller and more balanced than those of many competitors, and the fan noise is not excessively loud.

A BenQ TK860i projector.

  • It uses a bulb instead of a laser, so it lacks instant on/off capability, and you’ll have to replace the bulb down the line.
  • Precise image positioning requires more effort because of this model’s 1.3x zoom, manual controls, and 10% vertical lens shifting.

Nebula Mars 3 Air

This compact, 1080p projector offers good image brightness and contrast, above-average sound, easy setup, and a built-in battery. But mounting it on a tripod may prove tricky.

If you need a small, compact projector that you can easily move around your home, the Nebula Mars 3 Air offers almost everything we could ask for in this type of projector. The Mars 3 Air is an LED projector that has a 1080p resolution and supports HDR video in the HDR10 format (though it isn’t bright enough to show off what HDR can do). It also includes a built-in battery, built-in Google TV and speakers, automatic focus and image shaping, and support for Bluetooth audio.

  • The Nebula Mars 3 Air offers good brightness and contrast, rich color, and a 1080p resolution.
  • Its internal speaker system delivers good sound. You can also connect an external speaker via Bluetooth.
  • The projector automatically focuses and shapes the image so that it’s always optimized for your desired throw distance and angle, no matter where you place it.
  • Its Google TV operating system gives you direct access to streaming apps such as those for Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, and Netflix.

Our pick for best portable mini projector overall, the Nebula Mars 3 Air, in front of a yellow background.

  • The Mars 3 Air’s shallow tripod socket and ridged underside make it incompatible with some mounts and tripods.
  • This model doesn’t have a USB-C port, so you might need an HDMI adapter cable to connect a mobile device.
  • The black level, brightness, and color accuracy are lacking in comparison with a traditional home theater projector, so it isn’t an ideal choice for big-screen movie watching or gaming.

You can read more about this projector and others in our full guide to portable mini projectors .

best movie for presentation

BenQ HT2150ST

A short-throw pick.

If you’re short on space, the BenQ HT2150ST can produce a larger image from a shorter distance.

In order to create a large image most projectors need to be positioned far from the screen. This distance is called the throw distance, and can be anywhere from 8 to 15 feet, depending on the projector and desired image size. Short-throw projectors are convenient for small rooms or other situations where space is limited. The BenQ HT2150ST can sit much closer to the screen than a standard projector, and is bright enough to use in a room with some ambient light.

  • It works in spaces other projectors can’t, producing a 100-inch image with only a couple feet of space.
  • It produces a bright image that can work in a room that gets some ambient light.
  • Its integrated speaker and small size make it easy to store when not being used.

The BenQ HT2150ST projector sits on a white background.

  • The short-throw lens can cause some fringing artifacts that you might notice.
  • It’s bright, but the colors aren’t as accurate as those of the non-short-throw HT2060 .
  • This projector has a 1080p resolution. If you're willing to pay more for a 4K short-throw projector, check out the ViewSonic X2-4K in our guide to the best 4K projector .

You can read more about this projector in our guide to the best budget projector for a home theater .

Nebula Mars 3

This portable 1080p projector offers the good brightness, long battery life, and convenient features we want in an outdoor projector, but it’s bulkier than we’d prefer.

While nearly any projector can work for the occasional backyard movie night, a more rugged and portable model is advisable if you plan to use it outdoors a lot. The Nebula Mars 3 is the brightest portable projector we’ve tested, and while its 1080p resolution doesn’t measure up to a 4K projector (currently there are no battery-powered 4K options) it still provides good contrast and decent accuracy. Its built-in speakers performed admirably, and outdoor-friendly features like weatherproofing make it an ideal option for the perfect backyard movie night.

  • The Nebula Mars 3 is built for the outdoors because of its IPX3 weatherproof rating , drop resistance, and built-in LED lantern.
  • This projector had the longest battery life out of any other we tested, lasting around 2 hours on 100% brightness and 4 hours and 45 minutes on eco mode (20% brightness).
  • The Mars 3’s image contrast and color accuracy are pretty solid, and it supports 3D playback and has MEMC motion smoothing.
  • What makes this outdoor projector stand out is its built-in sound system, which produces a full and balanced sound that can fill a large space.

A Nebula Mars 3 resting next to its remote.

  • This projector measures 6.3 by 10.2 by 9.8 inches and weighs 9.9 pounds, so it’s bulkier than most. If you want to mount it, you’ll need a sturdy tripod like the Vanguard Alto Pro 2+ .
  • The Mars 3 lacks USB video ports, so you’ll want an HDMI adapter cable like this Insignia model .

You can read more about this projector in our guide to the best outdoor projector .

Ultra-short-throw (UST) projectors are often marketed as TV replacements because they can deliver a massive image from a very short distance and have a footprint smaller than any TV. But the truth is, these are still projectors, and expensive ones at that.

We tested four UST projectors at varying prices and performance levels and concluded that the vast majority of people are better off getting either a large TV or a traditional projector. You’ll either get better performance or spend less—oftentimes both. You can read more about this in our piece Is an Ultra-Short-Throw Projector a Good Substitute for a Big-Screen TV?

A great screen

best movie for presentation

Silver Ticket STR Series (White Material, 100-Inch)

Our favorite projector screen.

This inexpensive screen offers performance comparable to that of others costing much more, plus it’s easy to install.

Most modern projectors are bright enough to throw a decent image on just about any close-enough-to-white surface, but you won’t get accurate colors without a proper screen. A screen has less texture than a wall, plus it will add pop to the image, because paint almost always has less gain (that is, it reflects less light) than a screen, meaning the image will appear dimmer than is ideal.

The Silver Ticket STR Series performs as well as screens costing thousands of dollars. You can read about screen materials and our testing methods in our guide to the best projector screen .

Elite Screens Yard Master Plus

The best outdoor screen.

This outdoor screen’s rigid frame, highly reflective screen, and adjustable height make it the best choice for creating a movie-like outdoor-theater experience. But it carries a high price.

best movie for presentation

Elite Screens Yard Master 2

If you don’t need an adjustable-height frame or an extra-large screen size, this rigid frame uses the same material as the pricier Yard Master Plus.

While projecting an image against an outdoor wall or garage door is an option, a dedicated projector screen like the Elite Screens Yard Master Plus or the Elite Screens Yard Master 2 provides better video quality. Both screens are made from the same ISF-certified material, which did a great job of preserving image brightness and color accuracy in our testing. Assembly for their respective frames is straightforward, using button snaps to attach the screen to the frame.

The Yard Master 2 comes in sizes from 58 to 135 inches diagonally (in a 16:9 shape), while the Yard Master Plus comes in sizes from 100 to 200 inches. In addition, the Plus features an adjustable-height frame.

If you’re interested in an inflatable screen or something even more economical, check out our guide on outdoor projector screens .

A projector mount

best movie for presentation

Peerless-AV PRGS-UNV Projector Mount

A good projector mount.

This is the closest thing to the perfect projector mount we’ve used.

If you want to get your projector up and out of the way, you need a mount. The Peerless-AV PRGS-UNV Projector Mount is one of our favorites due to its flexibility and how easy it is to set up correctly. The mounting arms are highly adjustable and removable, so it can handle anything from a tiny DLP projector to the gigantic JVC D-ILA projectors that most mounts cannot fit. The dials let you easily make small adjustments to the projector to get it level with the screen and produce the best-quality image without much work. After years of using this mount and going through dozens of tested projectors, we have yet to find one that the Peerless-AV cannot handle.

Other AV gear

You’ll probably need some speakers, AV sources, and other accessories. Check out our recommendations in “ The Best Gear for a Home Theater System .”

How many lumens is good for a projector?

For a home theater projector that you will use mostly in a dark room, we recommend at least 1,000 ANSI lumens for a 100-inch screen. If you plan to use the projector in a room with more ambient light, you’ll want to go brighter: at least 1,500 ANSI lumens (ideally 2,000 or more). The larger the screen size you want, the brighter the projector needs to be to produce a satisfying image. Manufacturers’ claimed brightness specifications are usually exaggerated, so it’s best to rely on actual measured results from trusted reviewers. Some manufacturers use LEDs instead of traditional bulbs as the light source in their projectors, and they list the brightness rating in “LED lumens” instead of ANSI lumens to give a higher number.

How far away should you sit from a projection screen?

This depends on how much you want the projected image to fill your field of view. Some people like to sit closer in the movie theater so it feels more immersive, while others prefer to sit farther back. It’s the same at home. Experts generally recommend a viewing distance that fills between 30 and 36 degrees of your field of view, and you can use this calculator to help find a good seating distance for your screen size.

Is a 4K projector worth it?

If you watch a lot of 4K content and want the most detailed image you can get, a 4K projector is the way to go. The step up in resolution from 1080p to 4K can be more obvious on a projector than it is on most TVs, due to the larger screen size. However, native 4K projectors are very expensive and usually reserved for the most ardent home theater fans. Most affordable “4K” projectors use some type of pixel-shifting technology to reproduce a 4K image, which can be very effective and really is good enough for most people. Also, once you get past a certain seating distance, your eyes may not be able to see the difference between 4K and 1080p. Most 4K projectors also support high dynamic range video, but we think this feature is less important on projectors, since none of them are bright enough to do HDR properly.

Top 10 disruptive business innovators of all time

Steve Jobs Some called him a rebel; others celebrate him as a hero. Love him or hate him, you just can't ignore Steve Jobs - the Co-founder of Apple and chairman of Pixar. While Jobs has been widely criticized for dominating his colleagues, firing many in a moment of anger or even taking the credit away from juniors, he is undoubtedly one of the most innovaties visionaries of all times. After all, he gave us the Apple devices we love to use. Jack Welch Jack Welch is best known for streamlining GE and reducing management from 29 levels to only six. While he pulled up the cumulative value of GE up from $12 billion to $280 billion - the greatest leap under any CEO, he is also notorious among former employees as he got many of them fired. Bill Gates Once the richest man in the world, Bill Gates in only a college dropout! Instead of studying at the iconic Harvard University, Bill and Paul Allen opened Microsoft, and the rest is history. Bill was the one who insisted upon a 'closed-source ethic' and formed the foundation of the gigantic software industry as we know it now. Henry Ford The father of the modern automobile and Ford Motors was a rather odd entrepreneur. The inventor of the modern assembly line, contrary to the notion of his investors, Ford insisted upon designing an automobile for the common man. He also payed his employees more than the average salary, and promoted 'welfare capitalism' - call it the precursor to CSR. Sir Richard Branson Virgin opened its first store in London in 1971, and 22 year old Richard Branson was behind it. Currently Virgin is known for its record stores, labels, and airlines business, and Branson as a 'virgin' to the idea of business has powered himself to be the big daddy among daredevil entrepreneurs. Short answer

What is a film pitch deck?

A film pitch deck is a concise, visually engaging presentation used by filmmakers to showcase their movie concept. It highlights key elements like storyline, characters, and visual style, aiming to persuade investors or studios to back the project.

Without a solid pitch deck, your project will never come to life

In the high-stakes world of film, a weak pitch deck is like a leak in a ship – it can sink your project before it even sets sail.

Imagine your groundbreaking movie idea getting lost in a sea of pitches because it lacked that compelling presentation. This isn't just disappointing; it's a missed opportunity in an industry where first impressions are everything.

But crafting a pitch deck that resonates deeply with producers, publishers, and investors is a fine art.

This post will equipping you with the tools to win. I’m here to help you craft a compelling screenwriting pitch deck that no producer could say no to.

Let’s get started!

What makes a successful film pitch deck?

A successful film pitch deck captivates with a clear storyline, compelling visuals, and a unique selling point. It should weave the film's vision, target audience, and potential market appeal, to persuade investors and producers of its commercial potential.

What does a film pitch deck include?

Crafting a movie pitch deck is an art form, blending storytelling with marketing to captivate potential backers. It's not just about listing elements; it's about weaving a narrative that showcases your film's potential.

10 critical film pitch deck slides:

Title slide: This is your first impression. Feature your film's name and logo prominently, setting the stage for what follows.

Synopsis: Your story's heart. Offer a concise, compelling summary of your film's plot, capturing its essence in a few gripping sentences.

Moodboard: Visual storytelling at its finest. Use images or collages to convey the film's tone and aesthetic, giving a taste of the visual experience.

Main characters: The soul of your film. Provide detailed descriptions and visuals of key characters, making them memorable and relatable.

Setting/Location: More than a backdrop. Showcase visuals and descriptions of main settings, highlighting how they contribute to the story's mood and narrative.

Key scenes: Your script's highlights. Present pivotal moments or sequences that are crucial to the story, demonstrating the emotional or dramatic peaks.

Target audience: Know your viewers. Clearly define who the film is for and its appeal, backing it up with market analysis to show its potential reach and impact.

Budget breakdown: Transparency builds trust. Offer a clear overview of estimated costs, showing you've thoughtfully considered the financial aspect of bringing your vision to life.

Market analysis: Show your business acumen. Include data on potential audience size, competitors, and distribution opportunities, proving your film's market viability.

Team overview: The driving force. Introduce key members behind the film, highlighting their roles, experience, and contributions to the project's credibility and potential success.

Each element of your pitch deck should tell a part of your film's story, from the creative vision to the practicalities of production and marketing.

Remember, a successful pitch deck for movies is more than a collection of slides; it's a compelling narrative that brings your film to life for potential investors and collaborators. To have an easier time, perhaps consider a screenwriting software to write a screenplay before working on your film pitch deck.

How to create a film pitch deck?

Embarking on the journey of creating a film pitch deck is much like directing a movie itself. It requires a blend of creativity, strategic storytelling, and a keen understanding of your audience.

This guide is designed to walk you through the process step by step, helping you craft a movie pitch deck that not only showcases your unique vision but also resonates deeply with those who have the power to turn your cinematic dreams into reality.

Here's how to create your deck:

1) Dive deep into your project

Before anything else, immerse yourself completely in your project. Understand every nuance of your story, from the overarching themes to the minute details of your characters and settings.

This depth of knowledge will lend authenticity and richness to your pitch, making it more compelling.

2) Conduct thorough research

Begin with extensive research. Look into similar films or shows, market trends, and audience preferences. This step is crucial not just for understanding your competition but also for identifying gaps your project can fill, and trends it can capitalize on.

3) Craft a compelling logline

Your logline is the heart of your pitch. It should be a concise and catchy sentence that sums up the essence of your story. Think of it as the hook that will grab your audience's attention.

For example, for a thriller, your logline might be, "A retired detective is drawn back into the game when a serial killer he once chased resurfaces, leaving clues only he can decipher."

4) Create a narrative flow

Your pitch deck should narratively unfold like your film would. Start by setting the scene, introduce the main characters, outline the conflict, and give a sense of the journey and resolution.

This flow helps your audience visualize the film and connect with its story.

A useful strategy is to draw inspiration from existing movies. For example, if your film is a blend of genres or styles, you might describe it as "The whimsical charm of 'Amélie' meets the gripping suspense of 'Inception'."

This kind of comparison can quickly give investors a clear idea of the unique visual and thematic blend you're aiming for.

Here's our recommended pitch deck storyline:

5) Choose visuals that tell a story

When selecting visuals for your pitch deck, think of them as an extension of your storytelling. They should not only be aesthetically pleasing but also convey the mood, style, and essence of your film.

"The key thing is to be creative and offer an engaging visual presentation for industry insiders to consider.

If you have too much information (too much text), you're going to lose them. Focus on the broad strokes. Paint a picture of the story you want to tell, and showcase how you intend on telling it."

—Ken Miyamoto, Screenwriter and former Sony Studios liaison

6) Demonstrate commercial viability

A market analysis is vital to show you understand your audience and the market. Discuss audience demographics, compare with similar successful projects, and outline potential distribution channels and marketing strategies.

Here's a great example of a marketing and distribution plan slide:

Marketing and distribution plan slide

7) Be transparent about the budget

A detailed budget breakdown shows you're realistic and prepared. Include production costs, media and entertainment software , distribution, and any other significant expenses. This transparency is key to building investor confidence.

8) Showcase your team

Highlight the strengths of your team. Detail their previous successes and relevant experiences to build credibility. Your team's track record can be a significant factor in securing investment.

Here's an example of a team slide:

Team slide example

9) Address potential risks

Acknowledge and address potential risks in your project. This could include budget overruns, production delays, or market changes. Show that you have thought about these risks and have plans to mitigate them. This level of foresight can significantly enhance investor confidence.

10) Tailor your pitch to different audiences

When it comes to pitching your film, one size does not fit all. Different investors and producers have varied interests and priorities, and understanding these nuances can make or break your pitch.

Here’s how to tailor your pitch:

Studio executives: Focus on marketability, potential for return on investment, and audience appeal. Highlight aspects like genre trends, potential for sequels, or merchandising.

Independent investors: Emphasize the creative aspects, unique storytelling elements, and artistic vision. Discuss how your project stands out creatively in the current market.

Equity investors: Concentrate on the financial returns. Provide detailed market analysis, expected revenue streams, and a clear exit strategy.

Producers: Align your pitch with their past projects and interests. Show how your project fits into their portfolio and meets their artistic and commercial goals.

11) Conclude with a call to action

A compelling conclusion is as crucial as the opening of your pitch deck. It's the final act that leaves a lasting impression and prompts action from your audience.

Whether it's setting up a meeting, reviewing a script, or considering investment, your CTA should be direct and easy to follow. Use decisive language and make it clear what the next steps are and how they can be taken.

Consider embedding your calendar directly into your pitch deck. This innovative approach allows potential investors or collaborators to see your availability and schedule a meeting with you instantly.

Here's an example of a CTA slide:

How to design a film pitch deck?

Designing a pitch deck for a movie is like setting the stage for your film's narrative, where each slide is a crucial scene in its own right.

This section will guide you through the essential elements of designing a movie pitch deck that not only showcases your vision but also connects with your audience on a personal and professional level.

Here’s how to do it:

1) Embrace scrollytelling

Scrollytelling , a method of storytelling that combines scrolling with multimedia elements, can be a game-changer for your screenplay pitch deck. This approach allows you to create a narrative journey, guiding the viewer through your story in a dynamic and interactive way.

Use this technique to unfold your story as the viewer scrolls, integrating images, text, and other elements that bring your film to life.

Here's an example of scrollytelling:

Film pitch deck scrollytelling example

2) Create personalized slides

Address specific investors, producers, or studio executives by name and customize content to reflect their interests or past projects. This level of personalization shows that you've done your homework and are serious about your proposal.

3) Maintain visual consistency

Maintain a consistent visual theme throughout your deck. This includes using a uniform color scheme, typography, and layout style. Consistency in design not only looks professional but also helps in creating a cohesive visual story.

You can also use custom designs that echo the tone, style, and color palette of your film. For instance, if your film is a noir thriller, use a dark, moody color scheme and imagery that reflects the genre's aesthetic.

4) Add engaging visuals

Your visuals should do more than just look good; they should speak. Use high-quality images, concept art, or stills that give a glimpse into your film’s world. These visuals should be powerful enough to convey the mood and tone of your film without needing much explanation.

Here's a great example of a visually engaging deck:

Wednesday TV series pitch deck

5) Include interactive elements

Consider incorporating interactive elements like clickable links or embedded videos. These features can provide a deeper insight into your film, such as showing a teaser trailer, director’s statement, or behind-the-scenes content.

6) Tell a story through data

If your pitch includes market analysis or budget breakdowns, present this data in a storytelling format. Use infographics, charts, and graphs that are easy to understand and visually appealing. This approach makes complex information digestible and engaging.

Staring at a blank slide can be daunting, even for the most creative minds. So let our interactive film pitch deck templates lead the way.

best movie for presentation

Son of Monarchs (2020)

A rare (nowadays) 90-minute film, American Mexican drama Son of Monarchs will stay with you long after the end credits roll. This deep character study follows two brothers who are changed in markedly different ways by the trauma they suffered in childhood. This story, folding in magical realism, follows how they move forward in life -- the butterfly metaphors are strong, with biologist Mendel returning to his hometown surrounded by majestic monarch butterfly forests.

best movie for presentation

Bad Education (2019)

Based on a magazine article by journalist Robert Kolker, this tale about a public school embezzlement scandal and the student journalists who broke the news is captivating from start to finish. With new and familiar tunes, a committed cast and oodles and oodles of whimsy, the film allows audiences to get to know a young Willy Wonka with giraffe-sized ambition and undeniable chocolate-making skill. It's a quirky, comforting flick from Paddington director Paul King that you'll absolutely want on your plate.

best movie for presentation

Barbie (2023)

Unless you've been living in Barbie Land (or another place that isn't the real world), chances are you're very familiar with this pink-coated comedy already. The flick -- Warner Bros.' highest-grossing global release of all time -- brings a long list of stars together for a hilarious and heartfelt adventure. Greta Gerwig directs, Margot Robbie plays the titular role, and Ryan Gosling belts out an incredible power ballad as Ken.

best movie for presentation

Father of the Bride (2022)

Max's Father of the Bride introduces a Cuban American family that includes patriarch Billy, a traditional guy who struggles to digest surprising news from his eldest daughter: She's met a guy, and she wants to marry and move away with him. The third film adaptation of a 1949 novel of the same name by Edward Streeter, the movie is an enjoyable iteration that includes stars like Andy Garcia and singer Gloria Estefan.

best movie for presentation

Let Them All Talk (2020)

Meryl Streep playing an eccentric author in a Steven Soderbergh comedy. What more do you need to know? If you do want to know more: Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alice Hughes (Streep) is struggling to finish her next book, chased by her literary agent (Gemma Chan). She boards a cruise ship with old friends, who inspired her best-known work. Tensions are strong. It looks great -- Soderbergh uses crisp, natural light -- and most of the dialogue is improvised. See how Dianne Wiest, Candice Bergen, Lucas Hedges and the rest of the impeccable cast have fun with that.

best movie for presentation

Kimi (2022)

Steven Soderbergh directs this engaging tech thriller set during the COVID-19 pandemic. Angela, a Seattle tech worker played by a neon blue-haired Zoë Kravitz, has agoraphobia, a fear that prevents her from making it past the front door of her apartment. But when she uncovers an unsettling recording while doing her job, she's pushed to make the leap. Kimi is a stylish thriller complete with eye-catching cinematography, a solid score and a protagonist you'll be rooting for.

No Sudden Move (2021)

A movie from Steven Soderbergh, the great director behind Erin Brockovich, Ocean's Eleven and, more recently, Logan Lucky? Twists, thrills and desperate characters populate this crime thriller set in 1950s Detroit. When a seemingly simple job gets out of hand, a group of criminals must work together to uncover what's really going on. Take in the incredible cast: Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, David Harbour, Jon Hamm and Amy Seimetz. While the plot can be a little convoluted and some won't be able to get past the fish-eye lens cinematography, Soderbergh's sense of humor and immersive direction make this crime caper an entertaining night in.

The 11 Best Movies and TV Shows to Watch This Weekend

I t’s time to enter the TV glow. After a limited rollout, a new A24 flick is hitting theaters (the big-screen glow?) nationwide, and it’s insanely worth the watch. I can’t shut up about I Saw the TV Glow , as you’ll soon see. But there are other things beaming and streaming through the glow of a screen this week: a thrilling season of our favorite steamy Regency romance, a new Ilana Glazer comedy, an Oscar-winning publishing-world satire, and more. Here are the best things for you to watch this weekend. —Savannah Salazar

Featured Presentations

I saw the tv glow.

Jane Schoenbrun’s second feature, after their lo-fi We All Went to the World’s Fair , is larger in vision and scale, partly because they have A24’s money (good for them!). I Saw the TV Glow tells the story of Owen (a fantastic performance from Justice Smith), a kid in the suburbs who just wants to watch The Pink Opaque , a Buffy -inspired show about two psychic teens (Helena Howard and Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan ) fighting monsters on a different plane of existence. He bonds over the show with another queer high-schooler, Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine, who also turns out a force of a performance), but as the years go by, reality and fantasy begin to blur in a way Owen has trouble understanding. It’s a unique drama on the exploration of gender identity, loneliness, and how certain media can create a painfully personal language to interpret that dizzying journey. I Saw the TV Glow is sure to stick with you.

➽ It doesn’t hurt that I Saw the TV Glow has such a banger soundtrack with tracks from Florist, Bartees Strange, Sloppy Jane (featuring Phoebe Bridgers!), and Caroline Polachek . What’s a coming-of-age movie without good music?

Bridgerton season 3

It’s been way too long since Bridgerton has graced our screens, and season three is proving to be well worth the wait. Next up for love is third Bridgerton brother and world traveler Colin (a freshly spray-tanned Luke Newton), as he arrives back in London wooing members of the ton with his newfound charm and confidence. Then there’s his childhood friend Lady Whistledown herself, Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan), looking to find a husband of her own. He decides to help her, which, naturally, kicks off this wonderful friends-to-lovers story.

➽ Netflix has split this season into two parts (the second installment arrives June 13), because waiting two years for Bridgerton apparently wasn’t enough.

Ilana Glazer is back with another pregnancy story (this time a comedy) and another codependent friendship (this time with Michelle Buteau). In Babes , Glazer is Eden, a single woman who, after a one-night stand, finds out she’s pregnant and leans on her best friend, mother-of-two Dawn (Buteau), for support.

The Strangers: Chapter 1

A movie franchise you can absolutely not convince me to watch in a million years, but I will recount it for you anyway (brave, I know). The Strangers: Chapter 1 is the first in a new trilogy, based on the 2008 movie , with another film coming out later this year and the final one out next year (as of now). Directed by Renny Harlin, this movie stars Riverdale ’s Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez as a road-tripping couple who have to make an emergency pit stop and stay in an eerie, isolated Airbnb for the night. Because, sure, that sounds like a good idea.

➽ Okay, but where’s the Barbarian Mother vs. Dollface and Man in Mask spinoff?

Director John Krasinski is ditching the terrifying monsters of Quiet Place for imaginary friends in IF . The film stars Ryan Reynolds as a grown man who can see imaginary friends; he’s paired up with a young girl (Cailey Fleming) who can also see them, and the two go on to help find the kids who imagined them. Expect voice performances from Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Maya Rudolph, and so many others.

The Big Cigar

This limited series follows Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton’s (André Holland) attempt to flee to Castro’s Cuba to avoid the FBI; Newton and Hollywood producer Bert Schneider (Alessandro Nivola) cook up a scheme using a faux movie production for cover. — Roxana Hadadi

Finally Streaming

Hunger games: the ballad of songbirds and snakes.

Answer: No . But now you can come to your own conclusions on the Hunger Games prequel as it finally hits a streaming service this week! Oh, and if you have questions about that ending between Snow (Tom Blyth) and Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), we’ve got you covered .

➽ Plus, writer-director Cord Jefferson ’s American Fiction is finally streaming on Prime Video.

American Fiction

Remember writer-director Cord Jefferson’s passionate speech about mid-budget movies at the Oscars? This is the film he won that award for! Adapted from the Percival Everett novel Erasure , American Fiction (starring Jeffrey Wright, Sterling K. Brown, and Issa Rae) was one of the buzzier titles of awards season last fall. Now, it’s free on Amazon Prime Video, so this is your chance to watch it if you happened to miss it during all the Oscars hoopla.

The 30 Second Q&A

Outer range season two is on amazon prime video this weekend. but what is it about.

S.S.: What is it about Outer Range that is appealing to you?

Nicholas Quah: It’s a bizarro, elliptical show about the American West that’s almost completely made for weirdos. Very little about the first season feels like it was made by committee, let alone an algorithm … The first season ends in a way that flies straight off the deep end! There’s absolutely nothing like it! I should also say that, as a result of that ending, the second season has veered deeper into incomprehensibility. I guess I’m having fun still. I don’t know! Sons hang out with younger versions of their fathers! Whatever! My brain is melting.

S.S.: Do you think more people than just you and Ray should watch?

N.Q.: Yes! Who needs Yellowstone !

S.S.: Brolin over Costner.

N.Q.: 1,000 percent.

Double Feature

Buffy the vampire slayer.

I Saw the TV Glow director Schoenbrun talked to Vulture about the many ‘90s television shows that inspired their new feature from Are You Afraid of the Dark? to Twin Peaks , but Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the absolute starting point. So why not take the chance to (re)watch?

There's nothing like watching your favorite films in a dark room on a massive screen. For that authentic movie theater experience at home, you’ll need a projector (and a popcorn maker ).

You used to have to shell out more than $10,000 to get an excellent projected experience, but you can now get a massive, beautiful picture for less than the cost of a flagship TV . Projectors are also much more portable and easier to set up than ever. And if you have space, there are excellent pocket-sized and short-throw models that make lawn-side movie nights as easy as finding an extension cord and a level chair to set them on. Below are our favorite models and a couple of screens to pair with them.

Working on a total home-theater overhaul and need some help? We've got an entire guide to How to Set Up a Projector . Also, be sure to check out our buying guides to the Best Soundbars and Best 4K Streaming Devices .

Updated September 2023: We added the Optoma UHD55, BenQ TK860i, and BenQ W4000i.

Best for Most

The previous Optoma model, the UHD50X ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ), offered one of the best pictures you'll find at a reasonable price, and the newer UHD55 keeps with that tradition. At 3,600 lumens, this projector is now bright enough for even lit rooms, and the image quality and ease of setup are directly comparable to the BenQ model that follows it on this list.

Plug in a gaming computer with a good enough video card and it will offer a 240-Hz refresh rate and low enough response time that you can play most online games. The high refresh rate also makes the UHD55 great for sports, which often look weird on projectors. I also like that this model supports Alexa, so you can literally ask your phone to turn the projector on.

If you want an upgrade, check out the UHZ50 ($2,800) , which uses laser projection, which makes it faster to turn on and off, and quieter for smaller rooms.

The latest bright-room projector from BenQ is another solid option for most people. With 3,300 lumens, the TK860i is more than bright enough for lit rooms, and it makes the thing positively gleam in the dark. This projector also comes with Android TV, which makes it easy to stream your favorite shows and movies instantly, no other streaming device is required.

It's light and easy to position. The projector can be placed between 9.9 and 12.8 feet from the wall, with up to 120-inch screen size. The Optoma above gets a bit brighter, but this has a bit better color and is still an excellent projector for most people. My advice? Go with whichever is cheaper at the moment.

Easiest Setup

Most traditional projectors require a significant distance between the device and the screen you want your image on, but not this laser projector. This all-in-one device ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) sits right on a traditional TV stand and projects an image upward onto an up-to-130-inch screen. It comes with a Dolby Atmos soundbar built in, which means you don’t even need to splurge for better sound until you really want to. Best of all, the setup couldn’t be easier, with a built-in Android TV interface and laser projection system that will be projecting your favorite shows and movies in no time.

High-End Pick

Epson's flagship 4K projectors have always been some of the best that money can buy. It feels like every generation builds in more value. It's hard to perceive value when it comes to a $5,000 projector, but this thing looks like a $20,000 (or more!) projector would have 10 years ago.

This three-chip laser projector is capable of 2,700 peak lumens for a bright picture in even moderately lit rooms, and it's so precise with color that it can do full 10-bit high dynamic range. It's also decent for gaming and watching sports, thanks to a 120-Hz refresh rate. If you have a theater room and need a new projector, this is a solid option.

Optoma UHD38X projector

Best for Gamers

Our top pick is good for most casual gamers, but if you demand an even shorter lag time, the UHD38x from the same company is your best bet. Projectors have always had slower input response times (the time it takes your motion on a gamepad to react onscreen) than regular TVs, but the UHD38x fixes this with a superfast 240-Hz refresh rate at full HD resolution. That lowers the input latency to a mere 4.2 milliseconds, compared with 16 on the UHD55X—more than good enough for all but the most competitive gamers.

When you're not using it to play Tears of the Kingdom on an up-to-300-inch screen, you can watch all your favorite films and TV shows in 4K. At 4,000 lumens, it's also bright enough for medium-lit rooms. The one thing I don't like about it? You can't shift the lens inside if you want to reposition it, so you'll want to make sure you have a proper mounting solution planned before you pull the trigger.

BenQ W4000i Projector

Best Under $3,000

This bright 4K projector from BenQ has two names: It's called the W4000i in the rest of the world, the HD4550i in the United States. Regardless of the model number, it looks and acts the same, with the best picture quality I've seen this side of three thousand bucks.

This projector meets 100 percent of DCI-P3 and Rec. 709 color standards (read: colors look bright but not washed out), and the black levels are also pretty awesome for a projector. I also like that this model comes with an Android TV system, which allows you to easily stream your favorite shows and movies in no time. With 3,200 lumens it's bright enough for even lit rooms, with 4 LEDs rated at 20,000 hours of viewing time before you'll need to think about replacement. Another benefit to spending a bit extra? It does a 240-Hz refresh rate at 1080p, which means this projector is shockingly adept at gaming and sports.

LG HU710PW Projector

The Smartest Projector

This gorgeous 4K laser projector from LG ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) is also beautiful to look at when media is playing, and it's just about the easiest to use when it comes to finding stuff to play. It has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and LG’s TV operating system built in, including the awesome Wiimote-like LG Smart Remote. That means you can access everything from Netflix to Apple Airplay casting.

It’s a bit cumbersome to mount (you’ll want two people), but once you do, vertical and horizontal adjustments for the lens make lining it up with your screen a breeze. It even has HDMI eARC, which makes it easy to connect to soundbars and other modern receivers. The projector’s remote can control them.

LG PF510Q projector

A Portable Smart Projector

If you have Wi-Fi in your back yard, this portable little model from LG is a great way to have movie night. It has a built-in smart TV interface that features all the biggest apps, and the onboard speakers are loud enough for a small gathering (though you might want to consider speakers or a soundbar if you're playing for more than a few.

I like how easy it is to set up and get things streaming on this model, which easily focused in seconds using the slider on the top of the device. The screen size gets up there, too, with this little thing capable of 450 lumens (you'll want it to be night to watch outside) and up to a 120-inch screen. It's full HD (1080p), and though it will go that big, I found this model best for a normal-to-large TV-sized screen (about 80 inches in diameter). Be aware: It wavers in an out of stock on Amazon but can be found elsewhere regularly.

LG CineBeam PH30N projector

Best for Phones

The CineBeam PH30N is a blast. It has two hours of battery life, so you can watch a short movie anywhere (plug it in for longer sessions), and you can even stream things straight from your cell phone—no cables required. With 720p resolution and up to a 100-inch image size all from a projector that fits easily in a purse, you'll be watching Netflix in the woods in no time. Just wait until it's dark, because portable projectors aren't nearly as bright as their beefier, cabled counterparts.

Silver Ticket projection screen

Best Indoor Screen

If you're gonna splurge on a projector, you should snag a screen to go with it. You'll get better colors, sharper highlights, and have a more cinematic experience overall. My favorite is this Silver Ticket model, which looks as good as screens that cost much more. It's also super easy to mount.

Elite Screens Yard Master projection screen

Best Outdoor Screen

Outdoor movie nights shouldn't rely on an old white sheet or the scruffed-up wall of your garage. Instead, grab the Yardmaster 2 from Elite Screens, which assembles in minutes and comes with a carrying case for storage between events. Don't want two screens in your life? Do what I did and just move it inside during the cooler months.

Group of people watching a movie on a projector screen outside at night

Tips and Tricks

Projectors offer larger screen sizes and a more cinematic viewing experience than their TV counterparts, but that doesn't mean they're easier to set up. That's why we have an entire guide to How to Buy a Projector to check out!

Unless you're going for a portable option, you'll want to make sure you have a projector mount ($24) and audio cables properly routed to the location of your projector. This is because setting up full-size projectors to fit your screen, be in focus, etc., can be a pain, so once you get everything dialed in, you'll want to leave it as-is.

Make sure you get enough lumens (how bright your projector will get at its peak, the higher the number the better). Over 2,000 lumens is a good starting space for any kind of lit viewing, but we recommend 3000 or above if you're viewing in a bright room.

Another thing to bear in mind before you get a projector is just how much space you'll need to properly set it up. In most cases, you'll need 10 to 15 feet between the screen and the projector (be sure to check the “throw distance” listed by the manufacturer in the manual) to achieve screen sizes over 100 inches.

Without a completely dark room, the image can look washed out and be hard to see. If you don't have a room without windows, consider getting blackout curtains. For more detailed information on how to set up a projector after it arrives, I highly recommend this video .

How-To Geek

Do cheap wireless hdmi adapters actually work i tested games, movies, and presentations.

Can you trust them for gaming and high definition streaming?

Key Takeaways

  • Wireless HDMI adapters work well for movies and streaming, offering decent image quality without tearing or artifacts.
  • Latency is not ideal for gaming, making gameplay frustrating.
  • Wireless HDMI is perfect for presentations, providing practicality and convenience for meetings and events.

Wireless HDMI seems like magic: no more cables from your laptop to your TV or projector; no Chromecast Apple Airplay, or other screen sharing apps to set up; no compatibility problems if your devices aren't in the right Windows, Android, or Apple ecosystem. But how well does it actually work?

How Does Wireless HDMI Work?

Wireless HDMI does just what it says on the tin. You receive two dongles with standard HDMI sockets , one to transmit and one to receive a HDMI signal. Plug one end into your computer or gaming console and the other into your TV, monitor, or projector, and they are supposed to "just work" by sending sound and video from your device to your screen, just as if there were a cable there.

The generic, unbranded adapters I'm using cost about $70 on Amazon , and they look like this:

The wireless HDMI Adapters as they arrived: a nice case, and some handy accessories.

At one end, the HDMI plugs, and on the other, a USB plug to provide extra power for them to transmit their signal. If your device can't supply enough power to the USB port, it can be plugged into a USB phone charger instead. Once they're plugged in, they automatically find each other and start working. There is no need to pair them or perform any additional setup.

Above you can see my wireless HDMI adapter set up and ready to receive video.

These adapters are sold under a number of different brand names by different online vendors, so, like a lot of other cheap Amazon gadgets, you'll need to go by their appearance, not their product label. While there's a number of more expensive wireless HDMI adapters available on Amazon (some from more widely known and reputable brands), I wanted to see what the absolute cheapest option could do. After all, I plan on using these adapters while traveling, and don't want to risk leaving something expensive plugged into the back of a hotel TV.

Testing Conditions

To perform these tests, I'm using a Windows 11 computer that is about 2.5 meters away from my 1080p TV, with a couch in the way for good measure. Before testing, I checked that the wireless HDMI adapters worked with some other devices, including an Apple MacBook and an Xbox Series S, to confirm that they worked with a variety of devices.

Wired HDMI will always have far superior quality than any wireless version, so this is a practical test to find out if wireless HDMI is useful, not a quality comparison.

Wireless HDMI for Movies and Streaming: Pretty Good!

I tested this by watching 1979's Alien on Blu-ray at 1080p. Alien is my go-to film for these kinds of tests, as there's a lot of dark corridors and contrast, if the quality is too bad it'll be hard to see what's going on.

Switching back and forward between wired and wireless HDMI, there was some blurring, but it didn't bother me from a reasonable viewing distance . There was no tearing or weird screen artifacts. Latency is not really an issue for movies and streaming (so long as the audio and video are in sync) and there didn't seem to be any noticeable issues with the overall frame rate and quality.

While I wouldn't use Wireless HDMI for my home cinema, it's perfectly fine for watching a streaming movie in a hotel, or viewing some home movies from your laptop on a bigger screen.

As you can see, the image quality for a high definition movie is quite reasonable.

One real bonus is the wide compatibility. I've had no small amount of trouble trying to share video to a TV in a hotel using various wireless standards, only to find that it doesn't work. HDMI is pretty much just HDMI, so these hardware adapters work with everything (so long as I can reach behind the TV to get to the socket).

Wireless HDMI for Gaming: It's Doable (Just)

Now the most important test: Gaming. For these adapters to be effective, the latency (the time it takes for the video signal to reach the TV) needs to be very low, as playing games isn't fun when it takes a few moments for your input on the controller to show up on the screen.

Disappointingly, latency was a problem here. Even dropping the resolution to 720p (let's face it, no one wants to go any lower) didn't help a lot. As you can see above, the visuals are washed out, blurry, and far from ideal.

Interestingly, the video quality and frame rate seemed worse when gaming than when watching a movie, rendering the usually visually striking Horizon Zero Dawn an ugly mess. This may be because of a difference in frame rate : while movies are presented at 24 frames per second, games are usually expected to run at 60 frames per second, and anything less is considered suboptimal. To transmit more frames, the quality appears to suffer. So, if you must use wireless HDMI for gaming, you'll probably want to stick to something with a slower pace, like turn-based strategy or point-and-click adventures.

Wireless HDMI for Presentations: Perfection

We've discussed video quality already, and most presentations aren't made to the standards of a Hollywood film, so we don't need to worry too much there. If wireless HDMI is good enough for watching movies, it's good enough for PowerPoint presentations .

It's practicality that wins out here. Work presentations are usually made on a big TV on a wall or from a projector sitting on a meeting table. Getting a cable from there to your laptop usually means creating a trip hazard, or moving your laptop closer so that you have to strike a yoga pose to reach for the keyboard and move to the next slide. Wireless HDMI adapters solve this perfectly: plug them in, and put your laptop wherever you want it. It's also great for events and conferences where different presenters might need to quickly connect with a variety of different devices.

Final Verdict

Would I buy these again? That depends on whether I am planning on doing much travel in the near future. These adapters are great for getting around inconvenient screen placement and for short-term use, but they aren't really practical for gaming, and the reduction in quality is enough that I'd rather just run a longer cable (and maybe drill some holes in the wall) if necessary for my home cinema.

The best large-screen tablets: Expert tested

jason-cipriani

The  best tablets have traditionally been a large-screened alternative to smartphones. But just as the display sizes of phones continue to grow, tablets have seen their screen size increase as well. This is a welcomed trend for those who do a lot of work on a tablet, including students or those who work remotely and want something thin and lightweight but with a large screen.

Also: The best small tablets you can buy

Tablets are considered "large" if they are 10-15 inches. The larger the screen size means the larger the working area is, which is especially useful if you're using a tablet as a laptop replacement. Not all tablets approach 15 inches, but there's more than enough screen real estate in the tablets available today.

What is the best large tablet right now?

Through our hands-on testing combined with our researched tablet picks, we did our due diligence to deliver you a list of tablets with wide displays and tip-top performance. Our pick for the best large screen tablet is the 12.9-inch iPad Pro , but we also included options from Samsung, Microsoft, and more. Read on to find our other large-screen favorites.

Also: The best cheap tablets

The best large tablets of 2024

Apple ipad pro 12.9-inch (6th generation), best large tablet overall.

  • Big, vibrant display
  • iPadOS 16.1's new multitasking feature Strong performance thanks to M2 chip
  • Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard are extra
  • A fully loaded iPad Pro can get expensive

Apple's 2022 iPad Pro lineup is by far the most capable and impressive iPad lineup we've seen, making it our best overall pick. It's also the most expensive by a long shot. The design hasn't changed all that much on the outside, but on the inside, you'll find Apple's M2 processor which consists of 20 billion transistors -- 25 percent more than the M1. It's the same exact processor that Apple is using in the new 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

I spent some time with the 12.9-inch Apple iPad Pro and found it to be faster and more capable than any other iPad model I've tested to date. You can expect downloads up to 2.4Gbps, twice as fast as the previous model, 15 percent faster performance, and up to 35 percent faster graphics performance. Customers who have bought it praise this processor upgrade, saying it makes the iPad Pro "future-proof" and worth the cost in the long run.

The Pro also supports the second-generation Apple Pencil, and there's a new hover feature thanks to the M2 chip. The feature works like this: Once the tip of the Apple Pencil gets near the iPad Pro's display, and when it's within 12 millimeters, parts of the interface come to life in apps that support the new feature. The Smart Connector is on the back of the iPad Pro, giving you the option to use it with the Magic Keyboard which includes backlit keys and a trackpad, or Apple's Smart Keyboard.

Also:  M1 iPad Pro (2021) vs M2 iPad Pro (2022): Is it worth the upgrade?

And, although the differences between the 5th generation and 6th generation models are more subtle, the M2 chip is really what shines here, making it a powerhouse tablet. The iPad Pro, combined with iPadOS and the M2 chip, is as close as you can get to a laptop without actually buying a laptop.

Apple iPad Pro t ech specs: Display : 12.9-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with ProMotion and True Tone |  Processor : Apple Silicon M2 |  Storage : 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB |  Biometrics : Face ID |  Colors : Silver, space gray |  Cameras : 12MP wide, 10MP ultrawide rear and 12MP TrueDepth FaceTime front |  Weight : 1.5 pounds |  Dimensions : 11.04 x 8.46 x 0.25 inches |  Connections : USB-C Thunderbolt/USB-4 |  Battery life:  10 hours

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE

Best budget large tablet.

  • More affordable than the S8 Plus
  • Expandable storage
  • Good battery life
  • Display could be better

If you want to spend less on a big tablet, Samsung's "FE" series of devices are designed with Samsung fans in mind. That is, the company takes the best features of its high-end devices, trims some of them down, and releases a more affordable product.

The Tab S7 FE has a large 12.4-inch display, a snappy processor, as well as multiple storage and memory options. The device, which comes in various colors, also has a 5G version available if you want to use it while on the go.

Some standout features include face recognition technology, two stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, and multi-device connectivity. It also has a great battery life that will last you for at least 12 hours.

While the display on the S7 FE isn't as nice as the S8 Ultra, Amazon customers say it's still more than suitable for streaming or playing games, and it also comes with an S Pen, adding even more to its affordability.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE tech s pecs: Display : 12.4-inch, 2560x1600 display |  Processor :   Qualcomm SM7325 |  Storage : 64GB, 128GB, 256GB |  Memory : 4GB, 6GB, 8GB |  Colors : Black, silver, green, pink |  Cameras : 8MP rear, 5MP front camera |  Weight : 1.34lb |  Dimensions : 7.28 x 11.21 x 0.25 inches |  Connections : USB-C |  Battery:   12 hours

Microsoft Surface Pro 9

Best large tablet for those who want a real computer.

  • 12th Gen Intel processors speed through daily tasks
  • Swappable SSD is lovely
  • 5G support on Arm model
  • Accessories sold separately
  • Possible confusion when shopping between configurations
  • Limited ports

Microsoft's Surface lineup helped usher in the 2-in-1 detachable computer market, so I'd be remiss if I didn't include it on this list. 97% of Best Buy customers who have purchased this tablet would recommend others buying it, giving it an overall rating of 4.8 out of 5.

With the Surface Pro 9, you're getting a tablet that runs Windows 11 out of the box, instead of a mobile operating system like Android or iPadOS. That means you're not going to have to worry about finding apps or workarounds for your workflows.

Review: Microsoft Surface Pro 9

ZDNET senior reviews editor, June Wan, went hands-on with the Surface Pro 9, calling it, "the MacBook competitor Windows users have been waiting for," calling out one issue with the tablet. "That keyboard, along with the Surface Slim Pen 2, is sold separately but is quintessential to achieving the optimal Surface Pro experience," Wan wrote. "The Surface line has built quite the reputation with this two-in-one form factor, so my disappointment with Microsoft for not bundling the keyboard at least remains a thing."

If you want to use the Surface Pro 9 as a laptop you'll need to buy a Surface Pro Signature Keyboard. Or, you can opt to get the bundle  that includes the keyboard and Microsoft's Slim Pen 2 stylus, but you'll be shelling out $280.

Microsoft Surface Pro 9 t ech specs:  Display : 13-inch PixelSense Flow Display |  Processor : 12th Gen Intel Core i5/i7 or Microsoft SQ3 |  Storage : 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB |  Memory:  8GB, 16GB, 32GB |  Biometrics : Windows Hello |  Colors : Sapphire, platinum, forest, graphite |  Cameras : Rear: 10MP autofocus camera with up to 4K video Front: 1080p full HD video |  Weight : 1.95 pounds |  Dimensions : 11.3 x 8.2 x 0.37 inches |  Connections : 2x USB-C (4.0 on Intel model, 3.2 on 5G), Surface Connect and Keyboard ports, nano SIM on 5G model |  Battery life:  Up to 15.5 hours of typical usage

Microsoft Surface Pro X

Best large tablet for those on the go.

  • Classic Surface design
  • LTE connectivity in a Windows 11 device
  • Runs Windows 11
  • App compatibility remains an issue
  • You will need to splurge on a keyboard and stylus

I already included the Surface Pro 9 on this list, but the Surface Pro X deserves its own callout. The Pro 9 and Pro X share the same design along with keyboard and stylus support. What makes the Pro X different is that it's powered by Microsoft's SQ1 or SQ2 ARM-based processor. That's the same kind of processor architecture that's used by Apple in its Apple Silicon chips currently found in the iPad Pro and several Macs.

The benefits of moving to an ARM processor are seen in battery life and, in the case of the Pro X at least, the addition of LTE connectivity. However, there are some downsides. One of which is that apps need to be rebuilt to support ARM processors, instead of the tried and true Intel or AMD processors Microsoft uses in the rest of its Surface products.

Review:  Microsoft Surface Pro X

ZDNET contributor Simon Bisson also used the Surface Pro X and said, "Microsoft has produced an excellent device for mobile workers, with a focus on Office and the web."

Verified customers say that if you want a tablet that has LTE connectivity so that you can work from anywhere, the Pro X is worth considering.

Microsoft Surface Pro X t ech specs:  Display: 13-inch PixelSense display |  Processor:  Microsoft SQ 1 or SQ 2 |  Storage: 128GB SSD |  Memory:  8GB LPDDR4x |  Cameras:  5.0MP front-facing camera with 1080p full HD video, 10.0MP rear-facing autofocus camera with 1080p HD and 4k video |  Weight:  1.7 pounds |  Dimensions :  11.3 x 8.2 x 0.28 inches |  Connections:  2 USB-C, Surface Connect port, Surface Keyboard port, nano SIM |  Battery:  15 hours

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra

Best samsung large tablet.

  • Giant and improved display
  • IP68 rating
  • Improved S Pen experience
  • Occasional app crashes

Samsung's Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is by and large (pun intended) the tablet with the biggest display on our list. With a 14.6-inch display, you're sure to have enough room for work and play on the Tab S9 Ultra. Reddit users say that the S9 Ultra with a keyboard case will feel like a laptop, in terms of looks and weight.

Among upgrades to the tablet from last year's model includes an improved Dynamic AMOLED display, an IP68 for water- and dust-resistant capabilities, a better S Pen experience, and more. Included in the box is Samsung's S Pen stylus that can be used for drawing out ideas or writing notes, or you can use it to navigate the tablet's Android 13 interface -- and even write in any text field and have it automatically converted to digital text.

Review:  Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra

ZDNET writer Maria Diaz went hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, and said these upgrades "give it a definitive edge over the competition."

"An IP68 rating gives the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra water and dust resistance that neither the iPad nor any premium tablet on the market is certified for," Diaz wrote. "Though I wouldn't recommend testing the limits, the Tab S9 Ultra can resist dust and is not only splash-proof but it will also survive being submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes."

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra t ech specs:  Display : 14.6-in Dynamic AMOLED, 120Hz  |  Processor : Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy |  Storage : 256GB, 512GB, microSD up to 1TB |  Memory : 12GB or 16GB |  Colors : Graphite or Beige |  Cameras : Rear: 13MP main, 8MP ultrawide, Front: 12MP main, 12MP ultrawide |  Weight : 1.62lb |  Dimensions : 12.85 x 8.21 x 0.21 inches |  Connections : USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 1 |  Battery:  11,200mAh

Lenovo Tab Extreme

The Lenovo Tab Extreme, according to Diaz, is "built for consumers who want to go from work to leisure without skipping a beat." If you want to enjoy the tech amenities of the iPad Pro but don't have the budget to do so, this tablet is an "outstanding competitor."

Review:  The Lenovo Tab Extreme is the iPad Pro competitor we aren't talking enough about

The tablet might not have as great a battery life as an iPad Pro, but it has a quick charge and should last you over eight hours, Diaz writes in her review.  With 13MP front and rear cameras, you can conduct conference calls with ease, and with video output support through its USB-C port, you can hook up the tablet to a projector or TV and use it as an external monitor.

"From movie buffs, readers, audiophiles, and professionals, the Lenovo Tab Extreme best suits creatives and executives," Diaz writes. And Reddit agrees, with one user saying, "Overall I like this significantly more than my S9 Ultra. Desktop mode is awesome. The OLED screen and speakers are amazing."

Wacom Intuos Pro Large

Best large tablet for drawing.

  • 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity
  • Large surface area
  • Lightweight
  • Excellent stylus
  • Most drawing apps aren't free
  • Not the overall best large tablet

Wacom is one of the industry leaders when it comes to drawing and graphics tablets. With virtually no lag and 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity in the included battery-free Wacom Pro Pen, the Wacom Intuos Pro is the best drawing tablet on the market for professional artists. Plus, it has an active surface area of 12.24 x 8.50 inches, which gives you plenty of space to create.

The tablet's lightweight design (it weighs 2.86 pounds) makes it easy to use on your desk or lap, and you can customize everything from the tablet's ExpressKeys to the Pro Pen 2's buttons, depending on your favorite shortcuts.  Reddit users note  that the Pro Pen 2 is better than anything they have experienced in a stylus and that it alone is worth buying the Wacom Intuos Pro for.

My experience with this tablet was fairly easy and enjoyable (especially for someone who is not a professional artist). The pen makes it easy to fine-tune details and brush strokes in any drawing program you are working on.

Read the review:  This Wacom drawing tablet feels like putting pen to paper

Plus, you'll also get free access to drawing-specific apps and services, like Clip Studio Paint Pro for two years, Boris Optics for one year, and Corel Painter Essentials 8 and Corel AfterShot Pro 3 for 90 days.

Wacom Intuos Pro tech specs:  Dimensions:  16.9 x 11.3 x 0.1 inches |  Active area:  12.24 x 8.50 inches |  Compatibility:  Mac OS X 10.12 or later / Windows 7 or later |  Pressure levels:  8,192

What is the best large tablet?

The best large tablet is the iPad Pro (2021), thanks to its powerful Apple M1 chip, impressive cameras, and optional 5G support.

Which large tablet is right for you?

When trying to decide between one of these big screen tablets, the biggest question to ask yourself is what operating system do you want. Once you figure out if you need a full computer experience or if a mobile-centric operating system is enough, you can narrow it down from there.

If you're stuck deciding between the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro X, I'd recommend going with the Pro 8 only because you don't have to worry about app compatibility as you do with the Pro X.

Factors to consider when choosing the best large tablet

Even though there aren't many options for tablets with large displays, we considered a few key points while comparing models:

  • Price:  While we can expect to pay at least a few hundred dollars for a basic tablet, tablets with large screens and/or premium components and features can cost thousands.
  • Storage:  Because having a tablet that you can't actually  use  is no fun. I chose large-screen tablets that had varying levels of internal storage as well as microSD card expansion slots.
  • Connectivity:  While Wi-Fi connectivity is now standard for tablets and other mobile devices, it may also be worth looking at tablets that also support LTE cellular data for when Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. This feature is great for mobile professionals who may not always be able to access traditional internet networks.
  • Weight:  Large screens are all fine and dandy, but if the tablet is a pain to carry around, it's not going to get used much. I made sure to choose large-screen tablets that were still on the lightweight side for better portability.

How did we test these large-screen tablets?

When choosing the best large tablets, ZDNET editors considered our own experiences testing and using some of these tablets. We do extensive hands-on testing of tablets, including ease using them for work and entertainment, and paying attention to specs like display, battery life, and overall experience while using the tablet.

For products we have not gone hands-on with, we do in-depth research into different products and brands, taking into consideration user reviews (both good and bad), competitor analysis, and more.

What are the different tablet sizes?

Tablets range in size from small to large. Small tablets are usually five to seven inches. Mid-size tablets have a screen ranging from nine to 11 inches. Then, there are large tablets with screen sizes from 12-14 inches.

Keep in mind that the larger the tablet, the heavier it will usually be.

Does the size of a tablet matter?

Yes, the size tablet you choose definitely matters. A tablet's screen size determines its portability, how much you can zoom in and out, and how it feels to hold it and work on it. Bigger doesn't always mean best, but large-screen tablets are handy if you plan on using a tablet as a laptop replacement.

Do I need a keyboard and stylus for a large-screen tablet?

Neither accessory is a requirement. It all depends on how you plan to use the tablet. If you're going to use it for watching movies, playing games, or reading books, a keyboard isn't required.

However, if you plan on using it as a weekend replacement for your laptop, or for school, then, yes, you'll need to spend the extra money on one. You can get Bluetooth options online or at electronic stores, and they're perfect traveling companions for when you want to work or play on the go.

Is there really that big of a difference between Android and iPadOS?

There is a big difference in terms of the quantity and quality of apps that are available for iPadOS over Android. Apple and third-party developers have spent years fine-tuning the experience on the larger display device.

Google has all but admitted it gave up on making Android tablets, and developers have taken the company's lead. You'll find a lot of apps you can install and use, but ultimately they're nothing more than the phone version of the app, and many just don't work as they should.

Other large tablets we've tested:

Large-screen tablets are easier to find than small tablets, so it just takes some research into the market. Here are a few other large-screen tablets ZDNET has gone hands-on with.

Seth Meyers

After the Writers Guild strike derailed his annual routine last year, Late Night host Seth Meyers returned to the stage of Radio City Music Hall Monday morning during NBCUniversal ‘s upfront presentation, where he took aim at the entertainment industry, and his own company.

“Allow me to explain, the upfronts are where we sell ads for NBC’s amazing lineup of shows, well, not my show. My show is on at 12:30 in the morning, so instead of the upfronts we sell ours at the outbacks. Looking to get into Late Night ? Come see me out back.

PRESS RELEASE

Featuring a new thin and light design, breakthrough Ultra Retina XDR display, and outrageously fast M4 performance with powerful AI capabilities, the new iPad Pro takes a huge leap forward

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today unveiled the groundbreaking new iPad Pro in a stunningly thin and light design, taking portability and performance to the next level. Available in silver and space black finishes, the new iPad Pro comes in two sizes: an expansive 13-inch model and a super-portable 11-inch model. Both sizes feature the world’s most advanced display — a new breakthrough Ultra Retina XDR display with state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology — providing a remarkable visual experience. The new iPad Pro is made possible with the new M4 chip, the next generation of Apple silicon, which delivers a huge leap in performance and capabilities. M4 features an entirely new display engine to enable the precision, color, and brightness of the Ultra Retina XDR display. With a new CPU, a next-generation GPU that builds upon the GPU architecture debuted on M3, and the most powerful Neural Engine yet, the new iPad Pro is an outrageously powerful device for artificial intelligence. The versatility and advanced capabilities of iPad Pro are also enhanced with all-new accessories. Apple Pencil Pro brings powerful new interactions that take the pencil experience even further, and a new thinner, lighter Magic Keyboard is packed with incredible features. The new iPad Pro, Apple Pencil Pro, and Magic Keyboard are available to order starting today, with availability in stores beginning Wednesday, May 15.

“iPad Pro empowers a broad set of pros and is perfect for anyone who wants the ultimate iPad experience — with its combination of the world’s best displays, extraordinary performance of our latest M-series chips, and advanced accessories — all in a portable design. Today, we’re taking it even further with the new, stunningly thin and light iPad Pro, our biggest update ever to iPad Pro,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. “With the breakthrough Ultra Retina XDR display, the next-level performance of M4, incredible AI capabilities, and support for the all-new Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard, there’s no device like the new iPad Pro.”

The new iPad Pro — the thinnest Apple product ever — features a stunningly thin and light design, taking portability to a whole new level. The 11-inch model is just 5.3 mm thin, and the 13-inch model is even thinner at a striking 5.1 mm, while both models are just as strong as the previous design. The 11-inch model weighs less than a pound, and the 13-inch model is nearly a quarter pound lighter than its predecessor — allowing pro users to extend their workflows in new ways and in more places. The new iPad Pro is available in two gorgeous finishes — silver and space black — both with 100 percent recycled aluminum enclosures.

The new iPad Pro debuts the Ultra Retina XDR, the world’s most advanced display, to provide an even more remarkable visual experience. The Ultra Retina XDR display features state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology that uses two OLED panels and combines the light from both to provide phenomenal full-screen brightness. The new iPad Pro supports an incredible 1000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content, and 1600 nits peak for HDR. No other device of its kind delivers this level of extreme dynamic range. Tandem OLED technology enables sub-millisecond control over the color and luminance of each pixel, taking XDR precision further than ever. Specular highlights in photos and video appear even brighter, and there’s more detail in shadows and low light than ever before on iPad — all while delivering even more responsiveness to content in motion. For pro users working in high-end, color-managed workflows or challenging lighting conditions, a new nano-texture glass option comes to iPad Pro for the first time. 1 Nano-texture glass is precisely etched at a nanometer scale, maintaining image quality and contrast while scattering ambient light for reduced glare. With its breakthrough tandem OLED technology, extreme brightness, incredibly precise contrast, brilliant colors, and nano-texture glass option, the new Ultra Retina XDR display is the world’s most advanced display, giving iPad Pro customers an unparalleled viewing experience.

The incredibly thin and light design and game-changing display of the new iPad Pro is only possible with M4, the next generation of Apple silicon that delivers a huge leap in performance. M4 is built on second-generation 3-nanometer technology that’s even more power efficient, which is perfect for the design of the new iPad Pro. With an entirely new display engine, M4 introduces pioneering technology for the stunning precision, color, and brightness of the Ultra Retina XDR display. The new CPU offers up to four performance cores and now six efficiency cores, 2 with next-generation machine learning (ML) accelerators, to deliver up to 1.5x faster CPU performance over M2 in the previous-generation iPad Pro. 3 M4 builds on the GPU architecture of M3 — the 10-core GPU includes powerful features like Dynamic Caching, and hardware-accelerated mesh shading and ray tracing, which come to iPad for the first time. Coupled with higher unified memory bandwidth, pro rendering apps like Octane will see up to 4x faster performance than M2. 3 M4 also delivers tremendous gains and industry-leading performance per watt. Compared to M2, M4 can deliver the same performance using just half the power, and compared to the latest PC chip in a thin and light laptop, M4 can deliver the same performance using just a quarter of the power. 4 A new advanced Media Engine includes support for AV1 decode, providing more power-efficient playback of high-resolution video experiences from streaming services.

The new iPad Pro with M4 features Apple’s most powerful Neural Engine ever, capable of 38 trillion operations per second, which is 60x faster than Apple’s first Neural Engine in the A11 Bionic chip. Combined with next-generation ML accelerators in the CPU, a high-performance GPU, more memory bandwidth, and intelligent features and powerful developer frameworks in iPadOS, the Neural Engine makes the new iPad Pro an outrageously powerful device for AI. With iPad Pro with M4, users can perform AI-enabled tasks even faster, like easily isolate a subject from its background in 4K video with just a tap with Scene Removal Mask in Final Cut Pro. With this advanced level of performance, the Neural Engine in M4 is more powerful than any neural processing unit in any AI PC today.

iPadOS also has advanced frameworks like Core ML that make it easy for developers to tap into the Neural Engine to deliver phenomenal AI features locally, including running powerful diffusion and generative AI models, with great performance on device. iPad Pro also supports cloud-based solutions, enabling users to run powerful productivity and creative apps that tap into the power of AI, such as Copilot for Microsoft 365 and Adobe Firefly.

The updated camera system on the new iPad Pro delivers even more versatility, and with its rich audio from four studio-quality mics, users can shoot, edit, and share all on one device. The 12MP back camera captures vibrant Smart HDR images and video with even better color, improved textures, and detail in low light. It also now features a new adaptive True Tone flash that makes document scanning on the new iPad Pro better than ever. Using AI, the new iPad Pro automatically identifies documents right in the Camera app, and if a shadow is in the way, it instantly takes multiple photos with the new adaptive flash, stitching the scan together for a dramatically better scan.

On the front, the TrueDepth camera system moves to the landscape location on the new iPad Pro. The Ultra Wide 12MP camera with Center Stage makes the experience of video conferencing in landscape orientation even better, especially when iPad is attached to a Magic Keyboard or Smart Folio.

iPad Pro includes a high-performance USB-C connector with support for Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4, delivering fast wired connectivity — up to 40Gb/s. Thunderbolt supports an extensive ecosystem of high-performance accessories, including external displays like the Pro Display XDR at its full 6K resolution, and external storage, all connected using high-performance cables and docks. iPad Pro supports Wi-Fi 6E for super-fast Wi-Fi connections for pro workflows on the go. Wi-Fi + Cellular models with 5G allow users to access their files, communicate with colleagues, and back up their data in a snap while on the go. Cellular models of the new iPad Pro are activated with eSIM, a more secure alternative to a physical SIM card, allowing users to quickly connect and transfer their existing plans digitally, and store multiple cellular plans on a single device. Customers can easily get connected to wireless data plans on the new iPad Pro in over 190 countries and regions around the world without needing to get a physical SIM card from a local carrier.

Apple Pencil Pro features even more magical capabilities and powerful new interactions that take the Apple Pencil experience even further. A new sensor in the barrel can sense a user’s squeeze, bringing up a tool palette to quickly switch tools, line weights, and colors, all without interrupting the creative process. A custom haptic engine delivers a light tap that provides confirmation when users squeeze, use double-tap, or snap to a Smart Shape for a remarkably intuitive experience. A gyroscope allows users to roll Apple Pencil Pro for precise control of the tool they’re using. Rotating the barrel changes the orientation of shaped pen and brush tools, just like pen and paper. And with Apple Pencil hover, users can visualize the exact orientation of a tool before making a mark.

With these advanced features, Apple Pencil Pro allows users to bring their ideas to life in entirely new ways, and developers can also create their own custom interactions. Apple Pencil Pro brings support for Find My for the first time to Apple Pencil, helping users locate Apple Pencil Pro if misplaced. It pairs, charges, and is stored on the side of iPad Pro through a new magnetic interface. iPad Pro also supports Apple Pencil (USB-C), ideal for note taking, sketching, annotating, journaling, and more, at an incredible value.

Designed for the new iPad Pro, an all-new thinner and lighter Magic Keyboard makes it more portable and versatile than ever. The new Magic Keyboard opens to the magical floating design that customers love, and now includes a function row for access to features like screen brightness and volume controls. It also has a gorgeous aluminum palm rest and larger trackpad that’s even more responsive with haptic feedback, so the entire experience feels just like using a MacBook. The new Magic Keyboard attaches magnetically, and the Smart Connector immediately connects power and data without the need for Bluetooth. The machined aluminum hinge also includes a USB-C connector for charging. The new Magic Keyboard comes in two colors that perfectly complement the new iPad Pro: black with a space black aluminum palm rest, and white with a silver aluminum palm rest.

The new Smart Folio for iPad Pro attaches magnetically and now supports multiple viewing angles for greater flexibility. Available in black, white, and denim, it complements the colors of the new iPad Pro.

iPadOS is packed with features that push the boundaries of what’s possible on iPad. With Reference Mode, iPadOS can precisely match color requirements of the Ultra Retina XDR display for tasks in which accurate colors and consistent image quality are critical — including review and approve, color grading, and compositing. Stage Manager enables users to work with multiple overlapping windows in a single view, resize windows, tap to switch between apps, and more. With full external display support of up to 6K, iPad Pro users can also extend their workflow, as well as use the built-in camera on an external display for enhanced video conferencing. Users can take advantage of the powerful AI capabilities in iPad Pro and intelligent features in iPadOS, including Visual Look Up, Subject Lift, Live Text, or Live Captions and Personal Voice for accessibility.

With iPadOS 17 , users can customize the Lock Screen to make it more personal — taking advantage of the larger display on iPad — and interactive widgets take glanceable information further with the ability to get tasks done right in the moment with just a tap. The Notes app gives users new ways to organize, read, annotate, and collaborate on PDFs, and working with PDFs is also easier with AutoFill, which intelligently identifies and fills fields in forms.

Logic Pro for iPad 2 , available starting Monday, May 13, introduces incredible studio assistant features that augment the music-making process and provide artists help right when they need it — all while ensuring they maintain full creative control. These features include Session Players, which expand on popular Drummer capabilities in Logic to include a new Bass Player and Keyboard Player; ChromaGlow, to instantly add warmth to tracks; and Stem Splitter, to extract and work with individual parts of a single audio recording.

Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 , available later this spring, introduces Live Multicam, a new feature that transforms iPad into a mobile production studio, allowing users to view and control up to four connected iPhone and iPad devices wirelessly. 5 To support Live Multicam, an all-new capture app also comes to iPad and iPhone, Final Cut Camera, 6 giving users control over options like white balance, ISO, and shutter speed, along with monitoring tools like overexposure indicators and focus peaking. Final Cut Camera works as a standalone capture app or with Live Multicam. Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 also allows users to create or open projects from external storage, giving editors even more flexibility, and offers new content options. 7

The new iPad Pro is designed with the environment in mind, including 100 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure, 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, and 100 percent recycled gold plating and tin soldering in multiple printed circuit boards. The new iPad Pro meets Apple’s high standards for energy efficiency, and is free of mercury, brominated flame retardants, and PVC. The packaging is 100 percent fiber-based, bringing Apple closer to its goal to remove plastic from all packaging by 2025.

Today, Apple is carbon neutral for global corporate operations, and by 2030, plans to be carbon neutral across the entire manufacturing supply chain and life cycle of every product.
