✍️ How to Start a Sports Persuasive Essay?

You may be familiar with the term “hook” concerning the essay writing. If not, well, it’s a catchy sentence or two at the beginning of the paper. It’s supposed to intrigue the reader and grab their attention so that they follow your train of thought.

The writer places a hook before the thesis statement of their paper. This way, the reader will be more focused on the core message.

Let’s be real:

Not everyone is interested in sports. Or not in the particular game that you center your paper around. So, in the persuasive essay on sports, a catchy hook is essential. You need an attention grabber to make anyone engaged. Plus, it helps to get a clear understanding of your thesis later. You can check out some college essay examples to better understand what we’re talking about.

Starting an essay with a hook ensures that your audience will want to keep reading.

So, how can you intrigue from the start?

There are several popular hooks for sports-related essays:

  • Quotations . A quotation is an engaging way to introduce your reader to the topic. Make sure the quote is relevant to the rest of the essay. “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” – Michael Jordan
  • Fun Facts . Use some fun or unexpected info about sports to surprise a reader. It can be a great attention-grabber, especially if a reader is not knowledgeable on the subject. A record 202 countries participated in the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Athens.
  • Personal Experience. Using personal experience in a hook is smart in several ways. First, it gives the reader a sense of the author’s presence. Second, it provides information in an engaging, conversational style. I couldn’t stand the idea of working out when I was younger.
  • Anecdotes . Similar to personal experience, anecdotes are entertaining stories. They can be based on a real narrative or be entirely made-up. Your task is to make them humorous. Do you know Jim Thorpe’s response when he received the gold medal for the Decathlon? When the King of Sweden said that Thorpe was the greatest athlete in the world, he said, “Thanks, King.”
  • Rhetorical Questions . Rhetorical questions don’t require an answer. They either state the obvious or encourage one’s thinking. Use them in a hook to immerse the reader into the subject. If LeBron James ends up taking the Cleveland Cavaliers to the playoffs now, and Carmelo Anthony can’t take the Denver Nuggets to the playoffs, what do you think that does to the Rookie of the Year voting?
  • Useful Definition . Starting the first paragraph with a definition sets the tone for your essay. It is an informative, specific lead to your topic. Deck work is the mood-setting moves performed on the deck once the music starts before the swimmers enter the water.
  • Controversial statement . There are usually two sides to any controversy. Your reader will either agree or disagree with a given statement but will stay invested. The U.S. men’s soccer team won’t win a World Cup in the foreseeable future.

Make sure not to make baseless assumptions and statements.

📝 Writing a Persuasive Essay about Sports

Now that you’ve seen the topics let’s talk about writing. Persuasive essays differ from the other academic papers in both the goal and structure. You have to keep in mind that you’re composing not for yourself but for the reader. That’s why you have to present your arguments logically and coherently.

You should outline the persuasive essay before writing.

Here are some tips on writing a killer persuasive essay about sports:

  • Choose a topic that you can handle. Don’t try to compose a paper on the game that you know nothing about. It’s too tiring and time-consuming. Remember that it takes months for a fan to learn everything about their favorite sport. If you don’t have such years-long passion, focus on the more straightforward aspects of your topic.
  • Research beforehand . Even if you’re a sports fan, and especially if you’re not. There are plenty of rules and scandals that you need to consider to sound convincing. Look up some fun facts or entertaining stories. Sports topics usually give you plenty of material to play around with.
  • Take notes. The more notes you take while researching, the less work you’ll have to do after. And you won’t have to reread the materials to find that one sports event that you’ve forgotten about. The industry is quite vibrant with exceptional cases. Make sure you keep track of all the information that might be useful.
  • Pick the issues to discuss according to the evidence . If you can’t support an argument with enough credible proof, don’t include it in your essay. Both argumentative and persuasive essays require you to stay on top of your argumentation.
  • Outline and draft your paper before writing the final version. When you’re writing on recent events, you may get new information at any moment. So, draft before composing. In case you decide to include some new evidence or improve an argument, it won’t be messy. Outlining will help to organize your thoughts comprehensively and concisely.

Read the sports news before writing the final version of the essay.

Tips for Writing an Essay on Sports: A Student's Guide

Sport is a topic of great interest to all generations. For college students, professors like to assign sports topics to students. You may find you may have to write about topics like the role of sports in teaching life skills or the adverse effects of doping on sports. Here are some tips for writing an essay on sports.

preparing an essay

Do research

You will need to start with some research into your topic. You must concentrate on your research of a specific topic lest it is easy to get sidetracked. Materials you may need to use will include articles, books, interviews etc. There are also websites to help with your preparation, such as PrepAway.com .

Study the materials and make notes of relevant sources you want to use. You will have to cite these sources and use the right citation methods. Today, you can use software to help you do this.

Create an outline

Writing an essay on sports is like any other essay. You need to create an outline before you start writing. Creating an outline forces you to think clearly, plan and decide how to structure your essay. What are the main points you need to cover?

Once you have your main points, you can start structuring them by using headings, subheadings and paragraphs. Your paragraphs should each cover a specific point and should flow logically from one to another.

Essay writing help

When writing a sports essay, you may need help from an essay writing service. A writer for hire can help you to write any type of essay for you. For example, you may have to write about the influence of sports on mental health. If you feel out of your depth, essay writers on EduBirdie provide professional online help for students. You will receive a quality essay within your deadline. You can learn from it how to write your own essay in the future.

Write a first draft

With your outline as a guide, you can write your first draft. Start with the body, as it is hard to write a good introduction before you know what you will write in your draft.

When writing the body, each paragraph should start with a topic sentence stating the key idea. After this, you can introduce evidence from your research to support it. Take your research and see how you can put it across to the reader in a way that’s easy to understand. Use any facts, graphs, or statistics that support your standpoint.

Always use simple words where you can instead of complex ones, and write with the reader in mind. You can use an app like Hemingway to check whether your writing is easy to read.

Craft your introduction and conclusion

When you finish your first draft, it will be easier to write your introduction and conclusion. In your introduction, you will give the reader insight into what the essay is about in a brief and engaging way.

You may decide to introduce your topic with an intriguing quote that makes the reader want to find out more. It can set the tone of your essay. You should also introduce the key points you will discuss. Your thesis statement comes at the end of your introduction and gives the main idea of your essay.

Your conclusion shouldn’t just be a repetition of your introduction. It should tie up all the different points you make and explain how each one proves your thesis. It should leave the reader with a clear impression of the purpose and intent of your essay.

Proofread and edit

You should never submit an essay without proofreading and editing it first. Proofreading for grammar and spelling mistakes is easy today due to the use of software that does it for you. You still need to check it yourself because proofreading software can’t pick up issues like repetition or a lack of flow in your paragraphs.

It helps to have someone read your essay for you as you may be blind to certain errors. Reading your essay aloud can also help you to figure out where you could improve the flow.

A last word

Writing about sports can be interesting, especially if you are a sports enthusiast. Just remember that you will need to support your opinions with evidence from reliable sources. Spending time writing a strong outline is really worthwhile, as you can use it as a guide. Remember that your draft is only your first attempt. You will need to work on it and refine it until you are happy with the results.

Argumentative Essay: The Importance of Sports

Participation in sports is extremely important, and should be encouraged much more. Children and young people in particular need to do sport so that they develop good habits that they can continue into adulthood. The main benefits of sport are improved health and fitness, and the development of social and communication skills.

With more than a third of adults in the USA being classed as obese, and many more being overweight, it has never been more important to participate in sports. People that do sport on a regular basis are burning more calories than those that don’t, and are therefore less likely to end up overweight. Being a healthy weight means that you will be less likely to die young and suffer from heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, diabetes and a range of other conditions, and if you already eat well, it can give you an extra calorie allowance so you can treat yourself without feeling guilty about it.

As well as improving cardiovascular health and fitness, exercising is also good for the musculoskeletal system, making muscles more supple and toned, and improving the strength of bones and joints. People who do sports will be stronger and more able to lift and carry heavy things, which is also always useful, and they are less likely to become really weak and frail as they get older because their bodies are strong. Furthermore, doing sports can improve mental health as well as physical health, with exercise being helpful for people with depression and a range of other mental health issues, because it releases good chemicals into our brains. It also makes people feel better about their bodies, which can make them happier, and reduces the risk of eating disorders and crash dieting, as people make more sensible, healthy changes to their lifestyle.

Sports also allow people to develop personally. Social and communication skills can be learned and developed through sport. Teamwork, for example, is naturally learned through participating in team sports and games. Communication skills can really be honed, as they are at the center of any team’s success, and a lack of them leads to failure. Many people will also develop leadership skills through sport, often discovering abilities that they never knew they even had.

Many people’s self-esteem improves through sport as they discover things that they are good at and improve their body. Participating in any competitive sport also improves our ability to handle pressure and still perform well, as well as teaching us how to win and lose graciously. All in all, the fact that playing sport is good for us is completely undeniable, because it helps our minds and bodies, and ultimately means that we will be living longer, happier lives.

How to Write an Essay Outline | Guidelines & Examples

Published on August 14, 2020 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on July 23, 2023.

An essay outline is a way of planning the structure of your essay before you start writing. It involves writing quick summary sentences or phrases for every point you will cover in each paragraph , giving you a picture of how your argument will unfold.

Organizing your material, presentation of the outline, examples of essay outlines, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about essay outlines.

At the stage where you’re writing an essay outline, your ideas are probably still not fully formed. You should know your topic  and have already done some preliminary research to find relevant sources , but now you need to shape your ideas into a structured argument.

Creating categories

Look over any information, quotes and ideas you’ve noted down from your research and consider the central point you want to make in the essay—this will be the basis of your thesis statement . Once you have an idea of your overall argument, you can begin to organize your material in a way that serves that argument.

Try to arrange your material into categories related to different aspects of your argument. If you’re writing about a literary text, you might group your ideas into themes; in a history essay, it might be several key trends or turning points from the period you’re discussing.

Three main themes or subjects is a common structure for essays. Depending on the length of the essay, you could split the themes into three body paragraphs, or three longer sections with several paragraphs covering each theme.

As you create the outline, look critically at your categories and points: Are any of them irrelevant or redundant? Make sure every topic you cover is clearly related to your thesis statement.

Order of information

When you have your material organized into several categories, consider what order they should appear in.

Your essay will always begin and end with an introduction and conclusion , but the organization of the body is up to you.

Consider these questions to order your material:

  • Is there an obvious starting point for your argument?
  • Is there one subject that provides an easy transition into another?
  • Do some points need to be set up by discussing other points first?

Professional editors proofread and edit your paper by focusing on:

  • Academic style
  • Vague sentences
  • Style consistency

See an example

essay on sports outline

Within each paragraph, you’ll discuss a single idea related to your overall topic or argument, using several points of evidence or analysis to do so.

In your outline, you present these points as a few short numbered sentences or phrases. They can be split into sub-points when more detail is needed.

The template below shows how you might structure an outline for a five-paragraph essay.

  • Thesis statement
  • First piece of evidence
  • Second piece of evidence
  • Summary/synthesis
  • Importance of topic
  • Strong closing statement

You can choose whether to write your outline in full sentences or short phrases. Be consistent in your choice; don’t randomly write some points as full sentences and others as short phrases.

Examples of outlines for different types of essays are presented below: an argumentative, expository, and literary analysis essay.

  • Claims that it discourages engagement with academic writing
  • Evidence that Wikipedia warns students not to cite it
  • Argument that it introduces students to citation
  • Summary of key points
  • Value of digital education for students
  • Need for optimism to embrace advantages of the internet

You will sometimes be asked to hand in an essay outline before you start writing your essay . Your supervisor wants to see that you have a clear idea of your structure so that writing will go smoothly.

Even when you do not have to hand it in, writing an essay outline is an important part of the writing process . It’s a good idea to write one (as informally as you like) to clarify your structure for yourself whenever you are working on an essay.

If you have to hand in your essay outline , you may be given specific guidelines stating whether you have to use full sentences. If you’re not sure, ask your supervisor.

When writing an essay outline for yourself, the choice is yours. Some students find it helpful to write out their ideas in full sentences, while others prefer to summarize them in short phrases.

You should try to follow your outline as you write your essay . However, if your ideas change or it becomes clear that your structure could be better, it’s okay to depart from your essay outline . Just make sure you know why you’re doing so.

Playing sports can help professional athletes to stay in shape and stay competitive, while also helping people of all ages to develop important life skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving. It has been shown that professional athletes who regularly participate in sports have better physical health than those who don’t engage in physical activity. Additionally, sports can be a great way for professional athletes to network and build connections with other players.

When it comes to developing life skills, playing team sports helps individuals create strong relationships with teammates as well as learn how to work together toward a common goal. Overall, professional athletes who engage in sports are more likely than those who don’t participate in physical activity to benefit from improved physical health as well as life skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving. Essay samples

We call “sport” any activity that requires a psycho-physical effort on the part of those who carry it out and has a recreational intent. People have enjoyed both these characteristics in sporting activities since the times of Greeks and Romans. Athletes performed in various disciplines before an audience: from the beginning, therefore, the sport had a role in entertainment and life of individuals.

In sports, two components are joined together: on the one hand, we have the physical effort required on the part of the athlete, and on the other, the entertainment aspect offered to the spectators. The athletes’ physical and mental efforts are rewarded through various sources of remuneration; these sources can in part be traced precisely in the proceeds from ticket sales, merchandising, and sponsors’ investments.

Athletes are required to maintain a high level of performance for a longer or shorter period. Some sports completely take over the lives of those who perform them at high levels (such as football in Italy or baseball in America), by providing very high salaries and care of all kinds, from medical to everyday life management.

However, there are other athletes who, despite representing their country in all national and international sporting events, maintain more than one occupation and have to deal with the difficulties and commitments we all face from time to time.

The tendency to idealize athletes who, due to their performance or their personality, succeed in gaining public attention, has allowed some of them to lead, in parallel with sporting activities, a second career. In some cases, this is a performance through excesses and sensationalism. In others instead, these people have managed to lay the foundations to be able to reinvent themselves as sports commentators, coaches or in other careers, to secure a future even after closing that window of strength and agility that characterizes the young body but do not last forever.

Ever since man invented the sporting events, the link between physical activity and entertainment has always been very tight: the athletes of ancient Greece were remembered as great footballers of the past.

It is sad to realize that some sports and some athletes get practically no recognition comparing to their more famous cousins. Moreover, they are almost ignored, even when the services offered by those who practice them allow the home team to qualify or win international competitions. Perhaps with an education in sport that broadens the panorama beyond the “usual” football, these sports workers would also get the glory they deserve.

On balance…

Writing about sports can be fun, especially if you are a sports enthusiast. For instance, if you are a football fan, writing why football is the best sports essay should not be a problem at all!

Or you can come up with something even more exciting, like Should video games be considered sport? argumentative essay.

Just remember to support your opinion with proven facts from trusted sources, logically structure your essay, quote your sources, sound persuasive in an academic way, and proofread your essay. That’s a maelstrom of conditions making your copy worth an “A”!

How to Write an Essay Outline in 4 Steps

Lindsay Kramer

An essay outline is essentially an essay’s skeleton. It’s a text representation of an essay’s thesis and key supporting points.

An essay outline serves multiple purposes, including helping its writer organize their thoughts before they start writing, giving readers a quick synopsis of the essay, and acting as a roadmap for the writer to follow as they work through their supporting paragraphs. Writing an essay outline is a fairly straightforward process, and in this blog post, we’ll walk you through it.

What is an essay outline?

An essay outline is an informal document that lists and orders the parts of an essay so the writer can stay on track and make sure they don’t miss anything. Because it’s informal, an outline is usually written in incomplete sentences, similar to notes. This can make it easier for you to determine the most effective way to transition between paragraphs and the ideal order in which to present your supporting paragraphs.

Outlining is an important early stage in the writing process . It’s where you organize all the thoughts and insights you brainstormed into a neat roadmap to follow as you write. If you get stuck as you’re writing your essay, your outline is there to help you get back on track.

It’s not uncommon for professors to require their students to submit essay outlines before getting started on their essays. Usually, this is so the professor can make sure each student is on the right track in terms of choosing an essay topic that has a sufficient amount of sources to reference, that it fits the parameters of the assignment, and that the student understands the assignment.

Basic parts of an essay

Although every essay is unique, they all adhere to the same basic essay structure . Every essay starts with an introduction section, follows it with at least one body paragraph that supports the points made in the introduction, then wraps up with a conclusion section that reiterates the author’s thesis and summarizes the body paragraphs.

Introduction

The first section of your essay is called the introduction. As this name implies, this is where you introduce the topics you’ll be covering in your essay. It’s also where you state your thesis , the definitive sentence where you make your argument clear.

Body sections

Your essay might only need two supporting paragraphs, or it could need four or five (or more). Unless your professor assigned a specific number of body paragraphs for your essay, how many of these you write is your call.

If you’re supporting your thesis with multiple sources, a general rule to follow is one body paragraph per source cited. However, the type of essay you’re writing might require you to deviate from this. For example, in a compare-and-contrast essay, you’ll write one section (at least one paragraph long) for each comparison and contrast you make. In an analytical essay, you’ll write one body section for each point you make to support your thesis.

Once you reach your conclusion , you’re almost there! This is the part of your essay where you wrap it up and summarize the points you made in your body paragraphs. If you have any final thoughts or perspectives you want to impress on your reader before they finish reading your essay, this is where you make them.

4 steps for writing an essay outline

So you’re sitting at your desk, ready to write your outline. Great!

…how do you get started?

Just follow these four steps to craft an outline that makes the rest of the writing process simple.

1 Determine your objective

Think about your thesis statement. You might not have the exact wording at this point, but you should have a general idea of the point you’ll make and defend in your essay. Having a clear objective enables you to work through your brainstorming notes and craft an outline that hits all the necessary points you need to support that objective.

2 Filter out the fluff

When you brainstormed, you explored every possible avenue to go down in your writing and every potential piece of information to include.

Now it’s time to go through your brainstorming notes and pick out the points that will most effectively achieve your goal for your essay. For each piece of information you jotted down, ask yourself “how does this prove my point?” If you can answer that question with a clear, thoughtful response, add it to your list of points to make in your essay.

3 Identify the points you’ll make in each paragraph

Using the list of points you wrote down, identify the key arguments you’ll make in your essay. These will be your body sections. For example, in an argumentative essay about why your campus needs to install more water fountains, you might make points like:

  • Providing water fountains helps students save money
  • Fountains reduce plastic waste
  • Readily available water can cut down heat exhaustion incidents

Jot down the facts, anecdotes, and statistics that support each of these arguments. For example, you might cite the number of disposable water bottles recovered from campus grounds last year in your section on how water fountains reduce plastic waste. These supporting points are part of your essay outline.

4 Write your outline using a standard template

With your key topics and supporting points clearly defined, it’s time to actually write your outline. Using a template for the type of essay you’re writing (more on that in the next section), format your key points into a clear, organized frame that you’ll flesh out with content when you write your first draft.

Essay outline examples

Although every outline follows the same general structure, there are a few key differences to keep in mind when you’re outlining different kinds of essays. Take a look at how these example outlines for various essay types are similar as well as where they differ:

Argumentative essays

Here is an example outline argumentative essay :

Title: Italian Ice is a Superior Dessert to Ice Cream

  • Introduce the differences between Italian ice and ice cream, touch on how popular each is.
  • Thesis: Italian ice is a healthier, more refreshing, more environmentally friendly dessert than ice cream.
  • Cite the average amount of calories in a serving of Italian ice vs. ice cream
  • Cite how Italian ice thus fits more easily into most consumers’ daily caloric allotment
  • Discuss the benefits of consuming vegan vs. animal-sourced products
  • Discuss how Italian ice is vegan, making it accessible to both vegans and non-vegans and a healthier, more environmentally conscious choice for all
  • Because of the lack of dairy, Italian ice is a more refreshing treat than ice cream on a hot day
  • Discuss anecdotes about dairy making consumers feel hotter and not refreshed
  • Reiterate why Italian ice is a better dessert than ice cream and summarize supporting points.

Admissions essays

Take a look at this admissions essay outline:

Title: Arigato, Sato Sensei

  • My Japanese teacher was the most influential teacher I had in high school because she taught me more than just a language—she taught me how language shapes perspective.
  • Thesis: Choosing to study Japanese in high school changed my perspective on myself, my community, and my role in society
  • Discuss how I struggled in Japanese class and wanted to give up
  • State how Sato Sensei encouraged me to keep trying instead of changing to another language
  • Learning Japanese was more than memorizing vocabulary and copying hiragana and katakana; it’s understanding Japanese cultural perspectives and concepts versus Western ones
  • How Japanese language skills enabled me to succeed during my summer abroad
  • How I understood cultural nuances through my understanding of the language
  • With the perspective I developed as an American student who studied Japanese, I’m well-equipped to succeed as an international business major.

Persuasive essays

Here’s an example of a persuasive essay outline:

Title: We Need More Security Cameras in the Student Parking Deck

  • Vehicle break-ins are far too common on campus
  • Thesis: The current level of parking deck security is insufficient
  • State car break-in statistics and any related stats, like the average cost of repairs to broken-into vehicles and value of goods stolen
  • Discuss the intangible value of increased security with quotes and anecdotes
  • Cite statistics on how other campuses reduced break-ins by installing more security cameras
  • State the actual cost of installing sufficient security
  • Summarize the points made and emphasize how community safety should be a top priority for campus administration. Then, reiterate how more security cameras in the parking deck would improve safety.

Personal essays

Here is an outline example for a personal essay :

Title: The Two Best Birthdays of my Life

  • Introducing your feelings about birthdays and how you like to celebrate yours
  • Thesis: The two best birthdays of my life were my 17th and 22nd
  • I got my driver’s license and drove to my first concert with my best friends
  • I still have the ticket stub and wristband from that night
  • At first, I thought everybody had forgotten my birthday. I was devastated
  • Then, my siblings surprised me by traveling six hours to pick me up and take me to the art exhibit I’d been wanting to see
  • My 17th and 22nd birthdays were particularly meaningful because of the points cited above.
  • Perhaps finish with a parting thought on looking forward to more great birthday celebrations

Outlining is just one step to great writing

Once you’re finished writing your outline, follow the rest of the writing process steps to complete your essay.

How to Write a Successful 5-Paragraph Essay on Sports

Writing a five-paragraph essay about sports follows the same process you learned in middle school or high school about how to organize an essay. The basic components of your sports essay are:

  • Introduction
  • Body – Point #1
  • Body – Point #2
  • Body – Point #3

That general framework can be used effectively for virtually any paper, including yours. For your sports piece, preparation is key. Here’s how you should get ready to do your paper and where to go from there.

How Should I Prepare for My 5-Paragraph Essay on Sports?

First all, do your research. Read extensively about the subject you’re writing about, take thorough notes, and make sure you have a firm grasp on the ins and outs of your selected topic. Next, create a rough outline. It will be helpful if you write a sentence or two about what you want to include in the introduction and for each paragraph after that. This will give you a chance to consider what the most important elements of each paragraph should be before you write them out and elaborate on them.

How Do I Make My Essay on Sports Stand Out?

Consider what makes the sport you chose for your topic unique. Who are the iconic athletes and what have they accomplished other than success for their team? Try to discover some kind of greater truth within your topic and present it to the reader in a meaningful way. Evoking emotion in the reader will make your essay memorable, so do your best to translate your enthusiasm and passion onto the page by using powerful language and a variety of strong adjectives.

How to Write a Solid Introduction

Your introductory paragraph should explain the problem, events, or situation you will discuss in a concise way. You should outline the three points that will be addressed in detail in each of the three paragraphs that form the body. That way not only will you know what to write about as you go, your reader will easily be able to follow the progression of your paper as they go.

Think of your intro as a way to let the reader know what the piece is about and why they should continue reading. If your paper seeks to explain a pattern found among athletes in their rookie season for example, state what implications this discovery might have. This will give the reader a good reason to read on.

The 3-Part Body of an Effective Sports Essay

Each paragraph in the body should completely explain their designated main point. When you move onto the next paragraph, the idea explained in the previous paragraph should be coherent and leave no obvious questions unanswered. Be sure to keep the focus on your sport, team, or athlete without veering off on tangents. If you do decide to go into some backstory within your essay, keep it concise and relevant.

You need to wrap up your paper at the end with a strong conclusive statement. Be sure to make sense of your main points and overall argument with a logical ending that summarizes and ties your paper together. A great way to leave the reader is with a sentence that leaves them in contemplation. Read your final sentence out loud when you finish writing your essay and see if it resonates.

Tips for Successful Writing about Sports

Your tone does not have to be rigid and overly formal for a sports related essay. The topic calls for an informal tone, so don’t hesitate to express yourself in a semi-casual way. Take extra time when editing your paper and making revisions. Read it through at least three times for errors and structural improvements, and then read it again and makes changes accordingly to the content until your essay flows effortlessly.

Types of essay outlines

Several types of essay outlines can be used when writing an essay. The two most common types are the alphanumeric outline and the decimal outline.

An alphanumeric outline typically uses Roman numerals, capital letters, Arabic numerals, and lowercase letters, in that order. Each level provides a different level of specificity. This structure is a very effective way to think through how you will organize and present the information in your essay. It also helps you develop a strong argumentative essay.

Alternatively, a decimal outline uses only numbers, and each subsection is a decimal subdivision of the main section. This type of outline is often used in scientific papers.

Persuasive essay outline example

In the following section, we'll explore a persuasive essay outline example on competitive swimming. The purpose of a persuasive essay is to convince the reader of a particular point of view or idea, using compelling arguments and evidence.

In this case, the argument is that competitive swimming is an ideal sport for kids. The essay will present a series of arguments to support this view, demonstrating the various benefits of competitive swimming for children.

Competitive Swimming, an Ideal Sport for Kids

Introduction

Start your argumentative essay outline by stating your point of view and/or presenting your persuasive argument.

Thesis: Competitive swimming is a great alternative to other youth sports.

Body Paragraph 1

Introduce your primary persuasive argument and provide supporting details in your argumentative essay outline.

Topic Sentence:   Competitive swimming provides the same benefits as other sports.

  • Detail Sentence 1:   It is good exercise and builds muscular strength.
  • Detail Sentence 2:   It promotes cooperation among team members, especially in relays.

Body Paragraph 2

Introduce a secondary argument and provide supporting details.

Topic Sentence:   Competitive swimming provides some unique additional benefits.

Concluding Sentence:   There are many reasons why competitive swimming is a great alternative to other youth sports, including...

Narrative essay outline example

In the following section, we will examine a narrative essay outline example titled "How Losing a Swim Meet Made Me a Better Swimmer." Narrative essays aim to tell a story, often about a personal experience, to engage the reader and convey a particular point or lesson.

In this case, the narrative revolves around the author's personal journey of improvement and self-discovery through swimming. The essay will illustrate how an initial setback served as a catalyst for significant improvement and personal growth.

How Losing a Swim Meet Made Me a Better Swimmer

Introduce the subject of your narrative essay using a thesis statement and a plan of development (POD).

Thesis: The first time I participated in a competitive swim meet, I finished in last place. With more focused training and coaching, I was able to finish 2nd in the State Championship meet.

Plan of development:   I was very disappointed in my results from the first meet, so I improved my training and fitness. This helped me swim better and faster, which helped me to greatly improve my results.

Set the scene and provide supporting details. Again, start by brainstorming different ways to begin; then go ahead and craft an outline and a first draft.

Topic Sentence:   I was embarrassed at finishing last in my first competitive swim meet, so I began working on ways to improve my performance.

  • Detail Sentence 1:   I spent extra time with my coach and the team captains learning how to improve my technique.
  • Detail Sentence 2:   I started running and lifting weights to increase my overall fitness level.

Provide additional supporting details, descriptions, and experiences to develop your general idea in your essay writing.

Topic Sentence:   Over time, my results began to improve and I was able to qualify for the state championship meet.

  • Detail Sentence 1:   My technique and fitness level made me faster and able to swim longer distances.
  • Detail Sentence 2:  I steadily got better, and I began winning or placing in the top 3 at most of my meets.
  • Detail Sentence 3:  My results improved to the point that I was able to qualify for the state championship meet.

Body Paragraph 3

The next step in the writing process is to provide additional supporting details, descriptions, and experiences. You can then divide them up under different headings.

Topic Sentence:   With my new confidence, techniques, and fitness level, I was able to finish 2nd at the state championship meet.

  • Detail Sentence 1:   I was able to swim well against a higher level of competition due to my training and technique.
  • Detail Sentence 2:  I was no longer embarrassed about my last-place finish, and was able to use it as motivation!

Conclude the narrative essay with a recap of the events described or a reflection on the lesson learned in the story. Briefly summarize the details you included under each heading.

Concluding Sentence:   I used my last-place finish in my first competitive swim meet as motivation to improve my performance.

Descriptive essay outline example

We will now delve into a descriptive essay outline example. Descriptive essays aim to create a vivid and detailed description of a person, place, object, or event to paint a picture for the reader. The intention is to immerse the reader in the subject matter fully.

In this case, the essay provides an in-depth description of a visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The essay will use sensory and descriptive details to create a vivid and memorable experience for the reader.

Visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame

Introduce the subject of your descriptive essay with a thesis statement covering the person, place, object, etc. you are writing about.

Thesis: The Hockey Hall of Fame is full of sights, sounds, and experiences that will delight hockey fans of all ages.

Set the scene and provide factual details.

Topic Sentence:   The Hockey Hall of Fame is located in Toronto, Canada and features exhibits from amateur and professional hockey.

  • Detail Sentence 1:   The Hall is located in downtown Toronto and is visited by 1 million people every year.
  • Detail Sentence 2:   You can see exhibits ranging from the early beginnings of the sport to the modern NHL and Olympics.

Provide additional sensory details, descriptions, and experiences.

Topic Sentence:   There are many types of exhibits and shows, including activities you can participate in.

  • Detail Sentence 1:  Player statues, plaques, and jerseys decorate the walls in every room of the Hall.
  • Detail Sentence 2:  Many of the exhibits have movies and multimedia activities that make you feel like you're part of the game.
  • Detail Sentence 3:  You can even practice shooting pucks on virtual versions of some of the game's greatest goalies!

Conclude the essay with a paragraph that restates the thesis and recaps the descriptive and sensory details.

Concluding Sentence:   The Hockey Hall of Fame is an experience that combines the best sights, sounds and history of the game in Toronto.

Expository essay outline example

In the following section, we will explore an example of an expository essay. An expository essay aims to explain or describe a topic using logic. It presents a balanced analysis of a topic based on facts—with no references to the writer’s opinions or emotions.

For this example, the topic is "Why The School Year Should be Shorter". This essay will use logic and reason to demonstrate that a shorter school year could provide various benefits for students, teachers, and school districts.

Why The School Year Should be Shorter

Introduce the primary argument or main point of an expository essay, or other types of academic writing, using a thesis statement and context.

Thesis: The school year is too long, and should be shortened to benefit students and teachers, save districts money, and improve test scores and academic results. Other countries have shorter school years, and achieve better results.

Describe the primary argument and provide supporting details and evidence.

Topic Sentence:   A shorter school year would benefit students and teachers by giving them more time off.

  • Detail Sentence 1:   Students and teachers would be able to spend more time with their families.
  • Detail Sentence 2:  Teachers would be refreshed and rejuvenated and able to teach more effectively.

Provide additional supporting details and evidence, as in this essay outline example.

Topic Sentence:  A shorter school year would save school districts millions of dollars per year.

  • Detail Sentence 1:   Districts could save money on energy costs by keeping schools closed longer.
  • Detail Sentence 2:  A shorter school year means much lower supply and transportation costs.
  • Detail Sentence 3:  Well-rested and happy students would help improve test scores.

Provide additional or supplemental supporting details, evidence, and analysis, as in the essay outline example.

Topic Sentence:   Shortening the school year would also provide many benefits for parents and caregivers.

  • Detail Sentence 1:   A shorter school year would mean less stress and running around for parents.
  • Detail Sentence 2:  Caregivers would have more balance in their lives with fewer days in the school year.

Conclude the essay with an overview of the main argument, and highlight the importance of your evidence and conclusion.

Concluding Sentence:   Shortening the school year would be a great way to improve the quality of life for students, teachers, and parents while saving money for districts and improving academic results.

Sample research paper outline

Now let’s dive into a research paper outline. Unlike a typical essay, a research paper presents a thorough and detailed study on a specific topic. However, it shares the same foundation with an essay in terms of structuring the ideas logically and coherently. The outline for a research paper includes an introduction, a series of topic points that cover various aspects of the main topic, and a conclusion.

This research paper will explore the background of Mt. Everest, the major explorers who attempted its summit, and the impact of these expeditions on Mt. Everest and the local community.

The Conquest of Mt. Everest

  • Location of Mt. Everest
  • Geography of the Surrounding Area
  • Height of the mountain
  • Jomolungma (Tibetan name)
  • Sagarmatha (Nepalese name)
  • The number of people who have climbed Everest to date
  • First to reach the summit (1953)
  • Led a team of experienced mountain climbers who worked together
  • Norgay was an experienced climber and guide who accompanied Hillary
  • Sherpas still used to guide expeditions
  • Leader of the failed 1996 expedition
  • Led group of (mainly) tourists with little mountain climbing experience
  • Loss of trees due to high demand for wood for cooking and heating for tourists.
  • Piles of trash left by climbing expeditions
  • Expedition fees provide income for the country
  • Expeditions provide work for the Sherpas, contributing to the local economy.
  • Introduction of motor vehicles
  • Introduction of electricity

The Everest essay outline template is based on a research paper submitted by Alexandra Ferber, 9th grade.

Writing an essay outline is a crucial step in crafting a well-structured and coherent essay. Regardless of the type of essay - be it persuasive, narrative, descriptive, expository, or a research paper - an outline serves as a roadmap that organizes your thoughts and guides your writing process. In every sport, it has been utilised for fair play and to announce the winners. Research suggests that sports have the capacity to connect youth with positive thinking and provide positive development. For any sportsman, high education is not mandatory but required to be the best sportsman. It is his interest, strength and skills. We have seen in the last two decades women are also showing more interest in sports and for them also proper matches are arranged by the government. Sports give the feeling of living with a positive attitude. sports can be played in both indoor and outdoor, many indoor games like chess, carrom board, helps to improve the thinking power but the sports which are played in outdoor like football, cricket, Rugby, kabaddi etc helps to improve physical strength, thus the person who does more outdoor games should be more fit and slim. 3-4 decades ago the opportunity in sports was not much-showed interest which is shown by the present youth generation. Sports secure life and give a standard lifestyle. The 10 most popular sports played in the World are Soccer, Cricket, Basketball, Hockey, Tennis, Volleyball, Table Tennis and Baseball where Hockey was first played in India and became our national games. There are also some sports which are shown less interest like Kabaddi, Polo, Archery, Weightlifting etc. Swimming is known as the safest sport. So sports should be played by everyone because it helps our body in movement and gives good health. The study has proved that sports have better well controlled many diseases like heart attack, lung function, obesity, and thinking power. Ice hockey, soccer are the games which have the highest paid sportsmen. Also some sports can be played in small places and also some sports require large places. Sports keep us active and energetic, even in some treatment to recover from the disease sports are advised by the doctors. play sports on a regular basis and keep our self-fit, sports should not be neglected but it should be mandatory for everyone.

Costs of Corruption: Can Sri Lanka survive without eliminating corruption?

By Dr. Herath Gunatilake

Corruption is an issue that has been discussed widely during last two to three decades. While there was denial from accused parties, the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Governance Diagnostic Report provided clear evidence of widespread corruption in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka faces the urgent need to undertake reforms to curb corruption to escape from the crisis and put the country on a sustainable path of economic growth

Petty and grand corruption

One simple way to define corruption is the abuse of entrusted power for private gains by political leaders or public officials. It is a form of dishonesty or criminal activity undertaken by a person or organization to acquire illicit benefits. Forms of corruption vary, but include bribery, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, parochialism, patronage, influence peddling, graft, and embezzlement. Corruption occurs in both the public and private sectors.  Media personnel and civil society actors can also be involved in corruption. Actors can be individuals, companies, or organisations such as a political party.

Sometimes the ‘advantage’ gained through corruption may not be ‘undue’ or clear-cut, but is nonetheless an advantage. For example, in some highly corrupt societies people can only secure access to public health or education if they pay bribes. In this example, the bribe-giver’s ‘benefit’ is merely his or her rightful due but without the bribe the public can’t exercise that right.  The bribe-takers receive an advantage for carrying out functions that are anyway their duty. Admission to popular schools is a clear example in Sri Lankan context.

One useful way to classify corruption is to consider ‘grand’ and ‘petty’ or ‘administrative’ corruption. Grand corruption typically takes place at the public sphere’s top tiers, and within the highest levels in private businesses.  Grand corruptions are the acts by elite persons in the society who either make laws or responsible for implementing rules, policies and executive decisions. Grand corruption involves large sums of money. Grand corruption is also often called political corruption, highlighting the direct or indirect involvement of political leaders in such corruption.

All of the excessive costs incurred by grand corruption are ultimately fall on the heads of people in terms of tax money or public debt

Petty or administrative corruption is small-scale, everyday corruption at the interface between public institutes and citizens. The petty corruption is the bribery linked to the implementation of existing laws, rules and regulations. For example, public servants deliver services, only if they receive a private payment that is in addition to the institutionalized official price for this service. Bribery paid to get the house construction plans approved, obtain the timber transport permits, get school admissions, get route permit for private bus, get the driver’s license, avoid the delays in pension payments are only few examples of a widespread petty corruption.

Big money outflows

Apart from the ethical and moral considerations, why should one be worried about corruption? Generally, corruption undermines economic development and threatens state security. It also undermines democratic values. UN member states acknowledged the threat of corruption to the development process and have included Goal 16 into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – calling on states to ‘substantially reduce corruption in all their forms.’

On the contrary, one may still argue that if the corrupt gains are being circulated within the economy, it may not affect growth and it will only have distributional implications. Most often the corrupt gains may be circulating within the economy in petty corruption. However, in grand corruption, very often, ill-gained money flows out of the economy.

Corrupt politicians’ love for large infrastructure developments, such as roads, railways, power plants, stadiums, ports, and airports is not because of the rate of returns to investments, but because of the opportunities for larger commissions and political gains

There are proven cases such as the case of Ferdinand Marcos in Philippines. In Sri Lanka too, many claim about politicians siphoning ill-gained money to Dubai, Seashells and Uganda. In fact, the IMF governance diagnostic report states that “current governance arrangements have not established clear standards for permissible official behaviour, acted to deter and sanction transgressions, nor pursued individuals and stolen public funds that have exited the country. This statement clearly shows that there are credible evidence that some of the embezzled wealth through grand corruption has been taken out of the country.

Economy and corruption

Corruptions affect the country’s economy in numerous ways, while some of the most important issues are listed here: Corruption diverts public spending from taxpayers’ money or borrowed money towards “wrong projects” disregarding economic principles. Corrupt politicians’ love for large infrastructure developments, such as roads, railways, power plants, stadiums, ports, and airports is not because of the rate of returns to investments, but because of the opportunities for larger commissions and political gains.

Grand corruption leads to higher cost for infrastructure development. It seems that escalated cost of a project allows collusion between contracting companies and politician and top bureaucrats (P&TB). Accordingly, contractors gain excess profits even after paying bribes and commissions creating a win-win deal for contractors and the P&TB. Bidding process is also sometimes, purposefully delayed for years until the P&TB cut a lucrative deal from the contractor.

Corruption incentivizes the P&TB to borrow from high-interest commercial sources, including international sovereign bonds (ISBs), despite the availability of low-interest loans from multilateral or bilateral donors. Conventional donors make it a requirement to undertake financial and economic analysis of projects and impose strict procurement guidelines whereas the commercial lenders are only interested in the creditworthiness of the borrowing country.

Poor FDI flows

Higher costs of infrastructure can also be manifested in terms of poor-quality of the corrupt projects. P&TB influence competitive bidding process, and contracts are awarded to less qualified companies to receive bribes. Poor quality infrastructure entailes higher maintenance cost and frequent repairs.

Some of the good development projects are never implemented because of failure to agree on the bribe. Often, this happens when the P&TB request a bribe that is too big given size of the project cost. The private investor who already spent couple of millions of dollars for feasibility studies had no option other than giving up the project. The country loses the opportunity to implement a good investment project that would have otherwise generated sizable employment.

Grand corruption discourages or even prevents foreign direct investments (FDI). Simply when the imposed bribes are so large, private companies cannot make a reasonable profit.  Therefore, private investors avoid highly corrupt countries. Even after offering some lucrative tax incentives, some of the countries including Sri Lanka perform poorly in attracting FDI. One of the obvious reasons for low FDI in Sri Lanka may be that larger bribes unaffordable to investors.

Fate of the nation

All of the excessive costs incurred by grand corruption are ultimately fall on the heads of people in terms of tax money or public debt. These excessive costs are part of the reported accounts that must be settled by people, including their children and, children’s children in the future.

While there are other areas where corruption is reflected through poor economic performance of a country, corruption has more than just financial and economic costs. It reduces public trust and citizens’ willingness to participate in society in the democratic process. Citizens who perceive politicians as corrupt may not bother to vote in elections, get engaged in politics, or pay taxes.

Corruption, which could derail entire development process, is a major challenge for Sri Lanka. In a broader sense, corruption is a characteristic of underdevelopment and many types of corruption disappear when countries develop. Unfortunately, corruption can also be a major constraint for development. In Sri Lanka, corruption, among other factors, has contributed significantly to the current economic crisis in the country.

Sri Lanka faces the urgent need to undertake reforms to curb corruption to escape from the crisis and put the country on a sustainable path of economic growth. Given that the wide-spread corruption is one of the main barrier for the development of the country, the political will of the next government to curb corruption will determine the fate of the nation.

Deshaun Watson is sued for sexual assault and battery

  • Mike Florio

As Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson struggles to regain his old form, he has a new legal issue.

On Monday, Watson was sued in Houston for sexual assault and battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The accusations are strikingly similar to those made against Watson in more than 20 lawsuits filed in 2021. However, the plaintiff in the new case, who filed under the Jane Doe pseudonym, contends that she went on a date with Watson. Most if not all other cases arose from paid massages that Watson had arranged.

The lawsuit explains that the date was set for October 10, 2020. Watson, per the lawsuit, was initially unable to find her apartment. He called her and allegedly began “aggressively yelling and screaming and stating that he could not find her apartment and that he ‘doesn’t have time for this.’”

The lawsuit then contains the following allegations:

“When Watson finally arrived at Doe’s apartment, Doe had not finished putting on makeup, so she invited Watson in to have a seat in her living room while she finished getting ready. As she was putting on makeup in her bathroom, Doe left the bathroom door open and attempted a conversation with Watson, trying to ease the tension from his angry outburst. Jane Doe quickly began to believe she was talking to herself because Watson wasn’t responding.

“Jane Doe came out of her bathroom to investigate Watson’s silence and shockingly found him completely naked on her bed, lying face-down on his stomach. While Jane Doe stood there in shock, Watson turned his head and aggressively insisted that she massage him, gesturing to his buttocks. Jane Doe asked if Watson meant he wanted her to massage his back, but Watson indicated that it was his buttocks he wanted massaged.

“Jane Doe was at this point in the encounter terrified. She was in her small apartment with a much larger man, and she was still reeling from Watson’s outburst and aggression on the phone. Doe thus tried to appease Watson by rubbing his back, rather than his buttocks. Watson began insisting, again, that she focus on his glutes. Seemingly frustrated that Doe would only rub his back, Watson then turned over, revealing an erection. Watson continued to demand that Jane Doe massage him, gesturing from his knees to his groin. Jane Doe froze in fear, unsure of how to refuse Watson’s advances without jeopardizing her safety. Confused and scared, she reiterated to Watson that she wasn’t a masseuse. Watson asked her what she wanted to do instead.

“Before Jane Doe could answer, Watson grabbed Jane Doe’s leg and positioned her so that she was lying down. Watson then partially disrobed Jane Doe and penetrated her vagina without consent, implicit or explicit. Jane Doe felt paralyzed, unsure if she should risk her safety by trying to stop Watson or endure his assault. Watson roughly sexually assaulted Jane Doe for several minutes in a ‘missionary position’ before grabbing her and flipping her over. Watson continued to assault Doe aggressively from behind. Jane Doe finally gathered the courage and strength to escape Watson. Jane Doe quickly ran to her dresser to grab a heavy piece of décor for self-defense, and yelled at Watson [to] get out of her apartment. Enraged, Watson stormed out of Jane Doe’s apartment.”

The statute of limitations for most personal injury cases is two years. In Texas, a five-year window applies because the case expressly alleges sexual assault,

The plaintiff is represented by Tony Buzbee. He represented many others who sued Watson in 2021.

This new case raises plenty of issues, from the standpoint of the league and the Browns. It’s possible that Watson could be subject to further scrutiny under the Personal Conduct Policy. It’s also possible that a suspension — if one is imposed — could give the Browns a path toward voiding his remaining salary guarantees and ending the relationship.

The biggest difference between the latest case and the others is that Watson specifically is accused of sexual assault.
