PhD Program & Degree Requirements

The PhD in Architecture focuses on design-led research. It is the only doctoral program in Canada advancing architectural research on and through design. Students engage design as a mode of critical inquiry, knowledge production and transformative agency. The core component of this program is the design-driven dissertation, involving creative scholarship evaluated at important milestones. These milestone projects and presentations serve as forums for experimentation, dissemination and interpretive feedback. Students are expected to articulate rigorous research questions in relation to relevant contextual, theoretical and/or historical frameworks; demonstrate meaningful innovation and reflective expertise in a defined area of study; and make original, significant and compelling contributions to disciplinary knowledge.

Program Requirements

The program consists of two graded graduate courses and three pass/fail milestones:

  • Research Seminar (ARxxxx, 1 cr) , selected from available graduate architecture courses or approved directed study course;
  • Thesis and Design Research (AR8110, 1cr) , or directed study course with advisor
  • Milestone 1 – Creative Project (multi-media installation and public presentation)
  • Milestone 2 – Design Research Proposal / Candidacy Exam (written document & oral defense)
  • Milestone 3 – Dissertation (written study, design research documentation and possible installation)

Milestones are critical pass/fail thresholds for the presentation and evaluation of the design research. Work for milestones #1 and #2 should advance concurrently and may be evaluated in any sequence during year two. Additional interim presentations and submissions may be required, depending on the nature of the design research and project objectives.

1. Creative Project: The exact nature of this student-led design research project and its dissemination will be determined by the student in close conversation with the supervisor and advisory committee in view of the research questions, modalities and objectives. This milestone may take the form of an exhibition, installation, performance, colloquium, publication, etc., and is to be accompanied by a design research statement and appropriate written document. It may consist of a single event or a series. The public presentation shall be an active mode of advancing the research and serve as a forum for critical feedback from committee members, peers, faculty and the broader architectural community.

2. Design Research Proposal / Candidacy Exam: This written document and oral defense, with appropriate visual and multimedia material, serves to ground, deepen and advance the creative project. It is to be completed before the end of the second year. See YSGS  (PDF file)  Guidelines for Candidacy Examinations for Doctoral Programs : The written exam is designed to ascertain a candidate’s understanding of the basic theories, and recent developments in their area of study. This understanding must exhibit both articulate comprehension and critical exposition. The candidate must indicate the ways in which the proposed dissertation links with previous research in the area and advances knowledge in the field.

3. Dissertation: A culminating written and illustrated study, including design research documentation, installations and events (as applicable), respecting YSGS Guidelines  (PDF file)  Thesis, MRP, and Dissertation Submission Requirements . The dissertation is to be submitted and presented to the advisory committee at least six weeks in advance of the final defense and public presentation. The student, supervisor and advisory committee will define in advance the type and scope of the dissertation. Original creative work (such as drawings, models, installations, and events) must be permanently documented with appropriate media (video, photography, etc), and be appropriately credited and citable, listing all contributors and sources, with the doctoral candidate as the primary author. Irrespective of its form, the dissertation must demonstrate the PhD candidate's ability to carry out rigorous and significant independent work and to present clear and compelling results that make an original contribution to disciplinary knowledge.

Program at a Glance

The table below outlines a sample three-year PhD in Architecture program of study. Two seminars must be taken in the first year of study. Work for milestones #1 and #2 should advance concurrently and may be evaluated in any sequence during year two. Additional interim presentations and submissions may be required, depending on the nature of the design research and project objectives.

TORONTO METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY TMU launches PhD in architecture with a focus on design

TMU is now accepting applications for a new PhD program in architecture, promising a revolutionary approach to architectural research, the first of its kind in Canada.

Professor Lisa Landrum, chair of TMU's Department of Architectural Science, says the innovative program will emphasize design as a primary mode of scholarly inquiry.

"This is the only PhD in Canada that truly centres the design process as a form of research," Landrum said. While similar programs exist internationally, such as at Harvard University and the University College London, TMU's PhD in architecture is the first of its kind across the country to focus on design-driven research.

"The premise is that the research happens through design as a multifaceted mode of discovery," Landrum said. "So architectural design processes serve as both the subject and method of research itself."

PhD students will investigate a wide range of topics and techniques, from drawing and modeling,to interactive installations and prototypes, to embodied and enactive performances.

Those working in the architecture industry are looking forward to seeing the impacts of this new approach, citing societal changes as an opportunity to engage in new ways of thinking.

"We are in a period of massive societal and environmental change that requires architects to challenge existing paradigms and methods," said Andrew Frontini, design director at Perkins&Will Toronto. "We need new materials, new technologies and new insights into what constitutes good architecture. We conduct research to develop new approaches but also to measure the impact of what we have already built."

Others see this PhD approach as an opportunity for professionals to engage with the growing theme of design as activism. "Research through design is critical to advancing the field and responding to challenges," said Andrew King, principal at AK A Fldwrk. "Through experimental and applied research, TMU's PhD in architecture will help reshape design processes and potential."

The city is a laboratory

The TMU PhD program is also centred around tangible outcomes. Landrum says that prospective exhibitions, full-scale installations, interactive environments, and prototypes will pop-up across and beyond Toronto as forms of active scholarship and public engagement.

"The city itself is a lively laboratory," she said.

The ideal candidates for the program are curious, experimental individuals who are committed to rigorous inquiry and transforming the architectural profession for the good, said Landrum.

"This doctoral program will become an invigorating force for the discipline and a forum for reimagining what's possible in architecture."

The Department of Architectural Science will welcome its inaugural cohort of PhD students in fall 2024.

Toronto Is The Laboratory: TMU Launches 'Revolutionary' PhD In Architecture

April 08, 2024

Calling all aspiring architects! Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is taking what it calls a “revolutionary” approach to architecture, announcing a new, forward-thinking PhD program at its Department of Architectural Science. What makes it so special, according to the downtown Toronto university, is that it’s the only PhD in Canada that truly centres the design process as a form of research, joining other institutions like Harvard University and University College London. This means that research happens through design as a multifaceted mode of discovery; the architectural design processes will serve as both the subject and method of research itself. So, as opposed to a textbook style of learning, the City of Toronto will essentially act as a laboratory for students, with the program designed around active scholarship and public engagement.

“The program engages questions of how architectural knowledge is produced and mobilized for positive societal change,” says Professor Lisa Landrum, chair of TMU’s Department of Architectural Science. “It treats design as not just a task of problem-solving, but an open-ended process of discovery – finding out what is possible, desirable, and best. Architects can’t just apply received wisdom to produce a good result, or problem-solve through data analysis.”

As a creative and collaborative process, Landrum says architectural design is not a straight-forward, linear procedure. “We’re always dealing with particular situations and dynamically complex circumstances involving cultural diversity, local history, technological change, ecological precarity, economic limits, socio-political challenges, and happy accidents,” says Landrum. This is especially true in a vibrant and multifaceted city like Toronto.

“Researching how design navigates this complex diversity is central to the program,” says Landrum. “The program gives students space to ask open questions like, ‘How can we invent new ways of visualizing and communicating complexity to help communities discover the best design strategies and solutions?,’ ‘How can architecture be reimagined as an embodiment of cultural knowledge?,’ and, ‘How can we build thriving communities, while advancing our understanding about what helps people thrive?’”

When it comes to Toronto, how the program will utilize the city, says Landrum, will depend on the unique questions and curiosities that students bring to the program, and on opportunities that may arise.

“Essentially, we aim to use the city as our classroom, using public forums and interactive exhibitions as devices of research experimentation and dissemination,” says Landrum. “Some research happens in isolated labs and specialized archives. Architecture operates in the public realm. TMU is one of Canada’s most urban-integrated campuses. We want to use that to our advantage. We aim to make architectural research accessible and meaningful to everyone by engaging people in the research. Hopefully, this will empower people to participate in the development and design processes affecting their own communities.”

PhD students will investigate a wide range of topics and techniques, from drawing and modeling, to interactive installations and prototypes, to embodied and enactive performances.

Shaking up Toronto’s architecture and design industry, the program will generate new forms of collaboration between architectural researchers, designers and diverse partners in industry, arts, government, and community, says Landrum. “Outcomes of this program will not only sit on library shelves as eloquent theses, but be mobilized through public exhibitions, community events, open displays, and civic programming,” says Landrum. “We will engage architecture as a form of agency and advocacy for public good and cultural meaning.”

In the meantime, TMU's programming isn't the only thing expanding; the school is currently working on plans to add a glossy new Student Wellbeing Centre to its real estate and purchased two downtown Toronto sites for campus expansion last June.
