How we chose the best home office desks

linebreak

The experts and analysts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have been testing the best home office essentials since way before working from home became so common. When choosing the best home office desks, our pros evaluated a number of key criteria such as ease of assembly, ease of use, size and design and special or customizable features like portability and electric height adjustment. Several of the models we feature were tested in real homes and evaluated for construction and design quality by our pros. Chief Technologist and Executive Technical Director, Rachel Rothman , coordinated tests of several of the standing desk units and similar models on this list, evaluating based on design, comprehensive height range and ease of assembly from a consumer's standpoint, as well as desk stability throughout multiple hours of standard use and ease of adjustability through electric or manual operation. For desks that haven’t yet been vetted in our Labs, our experts reviewed online consumer feedback as well as specifications.

What to look for when shopping for a home office desk

✔️ Size: Before you get ahead of yourself and splurge on a home office desk online, first make sure to measure your space. Then determine how large of a working surface area you'll need. Do you need room for a monitor or just a laptop? How about accessories like a keyboard and mousepad?

✔️ Height and adjustability: Next, ask yourself who will be using the home office desk. If you plan on sharing with a partner or family member (especially if they're taller or shorter than you), consider purchasing a desk with an adjustable height. Desks that feature adjustable heights are often standing desks, so you can alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day.

✔️ Design and appearance: Do you want an L-shaped desk, or do you prefer a compact, minimalist desk that can blend in with your other furniture? It's important that you pick a desk that's not only functional but one that suits your style. After all, you'll be looking at it every day.

✔️ Storage: Several of the desks above feature storage options like drawers or shelves while others only come with a work surface. If you're someone that likes to use multiple accessories (think notepads, headphones, etc.), consider a home office desk with built-in storage.

✔️ Ease of assembly: Some desks will be easier to put together than others. Check reviews for whether other consumers found the assembly to be cumbersome. Also, consider the weight of the desk so you have a better idea of how heavy it will be when delivered.

✔️ Special features: Some desks are super minimalist, while others have customization options like the ability to change the finish, add a wire management kit or monitor arm and more. Pay attention to what extra add-ons are offered if that's something you're interested in.

Your Questions, Answered

Better Homes & Gardens / Alli Waataja

Nothing completes a home office like a reliable desk. Whether you plan to turn your temporary office into a permanent one, use the space on the few days a week that you are home, or get some work done from your couch, a great desk can help increase productivity and create a space specifically for work. The piece of furniture can also come in handy to establish a place to pay bills and do homework and other important tasks.

“While the definition of a desk is a table to write on,’ desks are multifunctional,” explains Molly Torres Portnof, the founder of DATE Interior. “Most people associate desks with work, but they can also double as storage, a surface to eat on and gather around, or a nightstand.”

With so many uses for a desk, it’s important to consider the size, layout, material, storage, and purpose when shopping for one. To help you find the best desk for your space, we researched various options, keeping these key features in mind. We also consulted Torres Portnof, Linda Hayslett, the founder of LH.Design, and Han Dang, co-founder at Very Handsome Studio.

Best Overall

17 stories kinslee desk.

This desk is ergonomically designed for both tall and short users, with ample monitor space and adjustable under-desk shelving.

The particle board may crack if you tighten the screws too tightly, and it can sustain dents from bumping into walls or other furniture.

Overall, our top choice is the 17 Stories Kinslee Desk for its large monitor shelf, ample storage space, and ergonomic design to prevent neck straining.

It's available in a variety of color choices, including carbon black and white wash, allowing it to seamlessly integrate into any new or existing space. And, the under-desk shelving is adjustable and removable, so you can customize it to best fit your needs and store objects like books and speakers. Plus, it’s created with a high-quality P2 grade particle board that not only meets the standard of the California air resource boards (CARB) but also receives a special treatment to become heat, scratch, and water-proof to give it longevity.

Still, it’s not as durable as solid wood desks, so make sure you assemble it carefully. Be sure not to over-tighten any screws to prevent cracks, and carefully slide the desk in place to prevent it from bumping into walls or other furniture and sustaining a dent.

Measuring 55 inches across, this desk is great for those with a large, dedicated home office space. We recommend putting it flush against a wall since it may cover the bottom of your window, depending on the layout of your space. The monitor shelf is 33.7 inches tall, while the larger tablespace is 29.7 inches, making this a great option for tall and short users. We love this for remote workers , dedicated gamers, and other professions where you need ample workspace to create and operate.

Product Details:   Size: 33.46 x 55.22 x 23.64 inches | Storage: Four exterior shelves | Material: Manufactured wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: 70 pounds | Colors: Eight colors available

Best Budget

Ikea micke desk.

The desk's design cleverly hides cables in the back, plus the legs can be mounted to the right or left.

The instructions are vague, and it's challenging to assemble alone.

If you’re furnishing your office on a budget, you can’t go wrong with the Micke desk from Ikea. Its clean and simple design can fit into just about any office aesthetic, yet it can also combine with other Ikea furniture to customize your workspace.

The desk’s design cleverly hides cables in the back, so you don’t have a tangle of wires everywhere, making it easy to keep your space neat. Plus, the legs can be mounted to the right or left, which can be helpful when you’re working with limited space. The entire desk is made of particleboard and fiberboard and is durable enough to last for years. It also comes in two finishes, white or black-brown, and has a large desk drawer to store your laptop, papers, and other items.

One of the downsides to this desk is the vague instructions. There are only pictures, so it helps to look up tutorials online. The instructions also recommend having a partner help you assemble the desk. Measuring 29.5 inches high and 28.75 inches wide, the Micke desk is an ideal option for small spaces. However, taller users may prefer to find something slightly higher to avoid strain. On its own, it’s a great option for teens who need their own workspace to do homework, study, and more.

Product Details: Size: 28.75 x 19.62 x 29.5 inches | Storage: One large drawer in the center | Material: Particleboard | Maximum Bearing Weight: 110 pounds | Colors: White, white/anthracite, black-brown, anthracite/red

Zipcode Design Kendal Desk

The X-design of the legs provides more stability than other options and prevents the desk from wobbling.

It can sometimes stick when folding or unfolding.

The Kendal desk is a great choice for those looking to maximize their small office spaces.

Created with a wood top and iron frame, it has an open design to keep all your favorite supplies in view—and to avoid the hassle of digging through unorganized draws to find something. It also has a single shelf which is the ideal spot to customize your desk with books, plants, or other small decor items. However, it’s also big enough to house an extra monitor alongside a laptop.

Since it’s foldable, the desk is easy to maneuver or put away if you need to use the space for other purposes (note that it can sometimes stick when folding or unfolding). Plus, its simple yet understated design looks great on its own or paired with your existing furniture.

It measures 32.7 inches tall and has 27 inches worth of leg room, making it an ideal choice for users of all heights. The X-design of the legs lends the desk more stability than other options, so it won’t wobble. Since it has a higher shelf, we recommend putting this against a wall to prevent it from covering the bottom of a window. Use it for completing tasks, remote work, gaming, and more.

Product Details:   Size: 32.7 x 32.08 x 32.48 inches | Storage: One small top shelf | Material: Manufactured wood and iron | Maximum Bearing Weight: 90 pounds | Colors: Brown-black, oak-black

Crate & Barrel Tate Stone Desk with Outlet

The desk is wide enough to accommodate any desk chair with or without arms, so you can sit comfortably and tuck in your chair when you’re done working.

Some users find the location of the outlets not very functional, and the drawers don't pull out far enough.

Created with a mid-century design and tailored shape, this desk from Crate and Barrel is ideal for larger office spaces. It has three center drawers for storing all your office necessities, including supplies, snacks, and more, yet also gives an oversized workspace for a larger laptop or monitor and still leave ample room for a desk lamp .

Made of birch and stone-tinted ash veneer material, it’s sturdy enough to survive years of usage, so you won’t have to replace it often or at all. Also nice: the desk was created with two outlets and USB ports to avoid unnecessary cord tangling, hide pesky wires, and make accessing your cords as simple as can be.

It’s available in two widths—48 or 60 inches—and measures 30.75 inches tall, with a 24.5-inch area for your legs. We love that it’s wide enough to accommodate any desk or office chair with or without arms, so you can sit comfortably and tuck in your chair when you’re done working. Given its large surface area, this is a great option for a remote office or teens who need a space to complete their homework. It also comes in two neutral finishes that can match any decor.

Product Details:   Size: 48 x 22 x 30.75 inches | Storage: Three center drawers | Material: Solid birch, engineered wood, and ash veneer | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed | Colors: Stone gray, walnut

Best With Storage

Better homes & gardens bedford leaning desk.

It’s a great multipurpose option for an apartment or small office because it doubles as a work space and a shelf.

The surface area for working is smaller than with a regular desk.

Cuteness aside, this option from our very own Walmart partnership made it onto our list because it’s super practical. The desk features a detailed wood grain finish and ladder-like shelves, making it a great all-in-one piece for keeping you organized while you work.

The desk also doubles as a place to display and store decorative items such as picture frames and plants. We also think it makes a fantastic vanity to store makeup and personal items if you outgrow it as a desk. Just don’t be alarmed by the way it leans, (we promise it’s absolutely sturdy). As long as you install it properly using the brackets that come with the desk, you should be able to attach it firmly to your wall.

At 71 inches tall and 33 inches wide, the piece leaves a pretty small area for actually working—it’s probably best for a laptop and a notebook or two rather than a large monitor setup. Our advice is to keep as little as possible on your desk while you work to stay organized. Still, the shelves make it worthwhile, and we would definitely suggest it to anyone living in a small apartment.

Overall, it’s a versatile option that can be used in many ways other than as a traditional workspace. We just wish that it came with drawers for even more storage. The desk is available in two colors: gray and ivory.

Size: 33.2 x 19.2 x 71.5 inches | Storage: Shelves | Material: Wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed | Colors: Gray, ivory

Best Standing Desk

Shw large electric adjustable computer desk.

It's available in three size options and seven color choices, including black and walnut.

It's limited in terms of built-in storage.

The SHW Electric Standing Desk is an adjustable desk that can move up or down, allowing the incorporation of movement into a work day.

Since it has a motorized lift, it’s adjustable and can move from 28 to 45 inches in height. The desk also has four memory preset options, so you can easily move it to your desired position, and built-in grommets to help you keep your cords organized. Built with high-grade industrial steel, it’s easy to clean and can withstand any potential spills.

It's available in three size options—40 inches, 48 inches, and 55 inches—and seven different color choices, including black and walnut. Unfortunately, this option is limited in terms of built-in storage. There is a hook on the side that can hold headphones or backpacks, but if you want something to organize papers, pens, or other items you will need to buy organizers to sit on top of the desk. Fortunately, it has such a wide tabletop that you should still have plenty of room for your monitor, keyboard, mouse, and other items, such as a tabletop fan .

Also, note that it doesn’t come assembled, and you will need a partner to help you unless you buy the expert assembly for an additional cost.

Product Details: Size: 24 x 40 x 28 inches | Storage: One cord basket and one hook | Material: Industrial-grade steel | Maximum Bearing Weight: 110 pounds | Colors: Black, cherry, maple, oak, rustic brown, walnut, white

Best L-Shaped

Pottery barn cayman desk.

Its minimalist design can seamlessly integrate into just about any decor.

It's expensive and doesn't come assembled.

This desk from Pottery Barn is a new take on an L-shaped desk, allowing you the option to fan out or fold in its end endpiece to better fit into your space.

With a minimalist design , it will integrate into just about any decor seamlessly. It’s a statement piece that’ll last you many years, thanks to its understated yet classic silhouette and rounded edges. Plus, it’s built with solid mango and birch-engineered wood that’s reclaimed from India, so each piece has different scratches, color variations, stations, repair patches, and natural imperfections, which makes each piece unique.

It has a 50-inch width and 30-inch height, making it suitable for users of all sizes. It doesn’t come assembled, and you will likely need a partner to assemble it safely. However, Pottery Barn does offer a White Glove Service for an additional cost.

It also doesn’t come with any storage, but with such ample tabletop space, you can easily add organizers on top to keep things neat. Although it’s one of the more expensive options on this list, we think it’s worth the price for its durability and customizability.

Product Details: Size: 50 x 20 x 30 inches | Storage: No internal storage, only external on the desktop | Material: Solid mango wood and birch engineered wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: 200 pounds | Colors: Warm black, biscotti

Best Skinny

Urban outfitters marisol desk.

Its stylishly arched frame, rounded edges, and dual center drawers give it a luxurious look.

You will need a pad to cover up the woven surface if you plan to use this desk for writing or have a mouse for your computer.

If you’re searching for a skinny desk that adds a vintage-inspired feel to the office, you’ll love this Marison Rattan Desk from Urban Outfitters.

Its arched frame, rounded edges, and dual center drawers give it a stylish design that not only looks aesthetically pleasing but also extremely luxe. With an all-over rattan basket-like, woven construction, it will truly take any space to the next level. Note: Since it’s made from natural rattan, there will be a variance in the hue of the piece. To clean it, simply wipe it down with a soft dry cloth.

The center drawers are shallow but they have a long depth, so they can still hold a few papers and other items you may want to conceal. If you plan to use this desk for writing or have a mouse for your computer, we recommend getting a desk pad or mousepad since the woven surface is not smooth.

Measuring 30 inches tall, it can accommodate users of any height and should easily fit desk chairs with or without arms. It comes fully assembled, so you can place it anywhere you want upon opening the box. Overall, this is a stylish pick and reliable pick.

Product Details:   Size: 44.25 x 20.25 x 30 inches | Storage: Two drawers in the center | Material: Rattan | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed | Colors: Natural

Best Adjustable Height

West elm mid-century desk.

It’s made with kiln-dried, sustainably sourced wood, which adds durability and prevents it from splintering.

The drawer front is purely decorative and isn't functional.

Those sharing an office space, whether it be with a roommate or partner, will adore this desk from West Elm.

This one is height-adjustable, meaning it can move up and down from fully seated to standing, and it locks into place at its highest setting to ensure it’s secure — combining the functionality of a standing desk with midcentury style. In addition, it’s made with kiln-dried, sustainably sourced wood, including acacia veneer over engineered wood and solid eucalyptus wood, which adds durability and prevents it from splintering. With three interior storage compartments underneath the top, there is plenty of space to store everything from important papers to office supplies, too.

To keep the look of a traditional desk, there is a drawer look on the front, but it does not open. The desk needs to be assembled with a partner; however, West Elm does offer a White Glove Service for an additional cost.

The desk measures 36 inches wide and can be toggled between 31- and 42-inch heights. It has a 25-inch under-desk clearance, making it appropriate for users of average height. If you have particularly long legs, you may need to find a taller option. The desk can hold up to 100 pounds and is wide enough to house two small monitors if needed.

Product Details: Size: 36 x 19.5 x 31 inches | Storage: Three interior storage compartments | Material: Kiln-dried wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: 100 pounds | Colors: Brown

Best Glass-Top

Everly quinn kiayra desk.

The desk has a generous weight capacity and comes with a one-year limited warranty.

It's not as sturdy as a wood or steel desk.

Designed with a tempered glass top, this Everly Quinn Kiayra Glass Desk is a fabulous pick if you’re looking to add a bit of elegance to your existing office space.

Its top has ample space for a laptop and dual monitors, and it can easily change the appearance of your entire office with the addition of a cool desk chair. It has a generous weight capacity of 200 pounds, so you can easily add storage organizers to the tabletop to keep things tidy. We also love that the desk frame comes in two color options, gold and black, to go with any color scheme.

While it won’t be as sturdy as a wood or steel desk, this glass top desk does have a bar underneath the center to add extra stability. It requires a partner for assembly, but it does come together quickly. It’s 30 inches tall and has an under-desk height of 29 inches, making it a great option for short and tall users. As a bonus, it also comes with a one-year limited warranty should anything happen to it.

Product Details:   Size: 30 x 46.7 x 31.5 inches | Storage: No internal storage, only external on the desktop | Material: Tempered glass, steel | Maximum Bearing Weight: 100 pounds | Colors: Black, gold

Pottery Barn USB Folding Wall Desk

It only requires installing five screws and anchors to assemble.

You will need an extra pair of hands to help you anchor it to the wall.

Give your office a rustic feel with this wood desk option from Pottery Barn.

Its space-saving design is efficient and folds down to maximize the space in your room. Overall, the desk folds out 16 inches away from the wall, so it’s decently sized. Although the desk is smaller, it still provides plenty of space and can be easily incorporated into nearly any layout without taking up too much room. In addition, it has two USB ports and a removable tray to hold your essentials when you’re using the desk.

We’d be remiss not to mention that it easily comes together and only requires installing five screws and anchors to assemble. However, keep in mind that you still may need a partner to help you install it into the wall.

It comes in two neutral color options to blend in with any decor style and should have ample leg room since you can decide where to place it. This is a great option for teens who need a desk for homework or those working from home in small spaces.

Product Details: Size: 31.5 x 15.75 x 8.25 inches | Storage: One removable center tray | Material: Wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed | Colors: White, fog

Best Acrylic

Cb2 peekaboo console table.

It's super simple to clean with a bit of soap and water and can be repurposed as decor in any room.

There is no built-in storage, and the acrylic does scratch easily.

CB2’s Acrylic Console Table is a great option for those looking to modernize their office space with something acrylic.

Made with 7-inch-thick molded acrylic, it can hold plenty of items, including your computer monitor, a cup of pencils, and more. However, many acrylic desks don’t have built-in storage, so it’s best to ensure you have tabletop storage or another storage solution for your office supplies. It’s also super easy to clean with a bit of soap and water. The best part? When you’re ready to change up your office, you can incorporate this desk into the decor of any room, including the entryway, living room, and more, as a side table.

This desk measures 38 inches wide and 29 inches tall, making it comfortable for users of any height. Unfortunately, acrylic does scratch easily, so it may be best to purchase a runner or desk mat to preserve its lifespan. It costs around $400, making it one of the more affordable options on this list. We recommend styling it with a bold-colored desk chair for a completed look.

Product Details:  Size: 38 x 15.25 x 29 inches | Storage: No internal storage, only external on the desktop | Material: Thick molded acrylic | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed | Colors: Transparent

Best Corner

Room & joy fieldstone desk.

This budget-friendly desk is available in five color options and is quick to assemble.

It needs a desk mat to help protect the top from scratches.

If you’re looking to make the most of corner space, an L-shaped desk like this one from Fieldstone is your best bet. It fits snuggly into tight corners to make the most of your home office space and provides a large desktop surface to place your monitor, laptop, or other electronic devices.

Since it has two built-in grommets, the desk ensures your cords stay organized yet it still provides plenty of space for books, pencils, and other important office essentials thanks to its two open shelves on the side. The tabletop can support up to 100 pounds, while the shelves can hold up to 35 pounds each. And it comes in five different color options, including black oak and dove gray.

It’s made of particle board, so it’s not as durable as some of the other options on our list. We recommend getting a desk mat to help protect the top from scratches. It does need to be assembled with a partner, so keep that in mind when purchasing. Still, it comes together quickly and is a reliable option for working from home and other tasks. Even better, it costs less than $200, making this a budget-friendly pick as well.

Product Details:  Size: 28.25 x 51.3125 x 53.625 inches | Storage: Two shelves | Material: Laminated MDF and particleboard | Maximum Bearing Weight: Desktop: 100 pounds; Side shelves: 35 pounds | Colors: Black oak, white/rustic, espresso, rustic oak, dove gray

Best Lap Desk

Lapgear home office lap desk.

It comes in two versions to accommodate right- and left-handed users, with a dual-bolster cushion for cooling comfort.

The mouse may slip down when you’re not holding it.

This lap desk from LapGear is an excellent choice for those who typically work from their couch, bed, or other atypical office space. It can be effortlessly transported from room to room yet still allows you to be productive on your laptop or portable device.

Designed to make your work more efficient, its versatile design also works as a TV tray or a place to put your pencil and paper to take notes. It also has a wide plastic surface, including a device ledge, integrated mouse pad, and phone slot, to make the most of its space. Note: Since it has a slanted design, the mouse may slip down when you’re not holding it.

It can hold 15.6-inch laptops comfortably, so if you have a 16-inch laptop or larger it may be a snug fit. We also appreciate that it comes in two versions to accommodate right- and left-handed users. The dual-bolster cushion feels especially comfortable and cooling. The best part? It only costs around $40, making this an extremely budget-friendly pick.

Product Details:   Size: 21.1 x 12 x 2.6 inches | Storage: Phone slot | Material: Plastic | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed | Colors: Black carbon, blush pink, espresso woodgrain, gray woodgrain, silver carbon, white marble

Best for Gaming

Homall ergonomic computer desk.

The desk has an extra-wide surface area to accommodate gaming equipment that takes up more space than other tech.

There’s no motor—the height can only be adjusted manually.

Serious and casual gamers alike can appreciate the Homall’s large 63-inch surface area and ergonomic design made especially for gaming in comfort. This desk size is large enough to hold multiple monitors and a gaming console, and comes with organizers to keep your accessories in one place.

Because it’s so big, we recommend measuring your room to be sure there is enough space for it to slide in. The height is adjustable, with a range from 27.6 inches to 31.5 inches. Tall users will never have to deal with too-little leg room, while shorter people can cut down on backstrain. Bear in mind that the desk is not motorized, so you’ll have to take it apart manually to adjust the height.

This is also a great choice if you like lots of add-ons. It has a cup holder, gaming equipment brackets at the foot of the desk, wire holes to keep your cords organized, and a plastic headset holder. The desk also features a built-in mouse pad with an S-shaped logo that covers as well as protects the top of the desk. This part can be removed. Unfortunately, the desk doesn’t have drawers or shelves to store your items. But, there is an elastic pocket underneath the desk’s surface which you could use as an alternative.

Product Details: Size: 63 x 28.9 inches | Storage : One elastic pocket | Material: Manufactured wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: 220 pounds | Colors: Black

Best For Home Office

Better homes & gardens glendale transitional desk.

It has two drawers, including a spacious file drawer with extension slides to help you organize paperwork.

It’s not adjustable, which may be a downside especially for those who like to switch between sitting and standing.

While we wouldn’t exactly classify our Better Homes & Gardens Glendale Transitional Desk as extra-spacious, the 47 inches offers enough space for a laptop or larger computer, plus some other materials. Rustic wood oak veneer gives the desk a charming and rustic look while keeping the piece affordable.

The desk consists of two spacious drawers with black metal handles stacked on one side. There’s a smaller, more shallow drawer on top, perfect for stashing pencils, pens, and notepads, and a larger drawer below. The bottom drawer is meant to hold files, and features extension slides to organize papers and folders.

It’s easy to assemble, with an instruction manual that includes plenty of pictures to clearly demonstrate how to put the pieces together. Since we’re recommending it for a home office, we would have loved a convertibility aspect to easily switch between sitting and standing. There are plenty of standing desks and converters on the market, but if you want a traditional desk, this one fits the bill in more ways than one.

Product Details: Size : 47.2 x 17.1 x 28.7 inches | Storage: Two drawers | Material: Wood composite | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed | Colors: Dark oak, rustic gray

Best for Students

Mainstay desk and office chair with better homes & gardens cube storage.

This dorm-friendly study set is a great deal because it includes a chair and a storage cube in addition to the desk.

The chair is only available in one bold color.

This option includes not only a desk but a full set complete with a chair and storage cube, making it a pretty sweet deal to cop if you’re a student. The desk portion is 36 inches wide and 20 inches long, making it a great study table for small spaces such as apartments or dorm rooms. “The best desk for students should be at least 24 inches wide and 48 inches long which offers decent space for your monitor or laptop and enough space for other study materials,” Dang says.

The desk features two open shelves with ample room to hold textbooks, notebooks, folders, and other belongings. The included swivel chair is adjustable and cushioned for added comfort. It also has wheels. Just be aware that its vertical range is limited—you can only adjust it up or down by one inch. Also keep in mind that while the desk and storage cube are white, the chair comes in teal only.

The four-foot storage cube is a stand-out offering. It has nine compartments to hold books, decor, frames, storage baskets. The piece is a great multitasker for dorm rooms or cramped kids’ rooms. Overall, this is an affordable desk set that students will find useful. The only thing that would have improved it in our eyes is a USB port for charging a cell phone or tablet.

Product Details: Size: 30 x 36 x 20 inches | Storage: Two shelves, included storage cube with nine compartments | Material: Manufactured wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: Desk and storage cube: Not listed; Chair: 225 pounds | Colors: Desk and storage cube: White; Chair: Teal

Best for Small Spaces

Better homes & gardens springwood caning desk.

The desk is finished on all sides and features stylish details like tapered legs so it doubles as a decor piece.

At only 31 inches in height, it might not be ideal for taller people.

If you’re looking for a retro look for your home office, the Better Homes and Gardens Springwood Caning Desk might be the right choice for the job. Crafted from a wood composite and faux rattan strips with a light honey finish, it adds a warm touch to any room.

Tapered legs add to the ‘60s vibe, making the piece attractive enough to stand alone as a decor item such as a side table in a living room or hallway. Even though the desk has no extra shelves for storage, it comes with slender drawers at the front to store office supplies.

It measures 47 inches in length and has a compact design, making it a perfect choice for those who want to avoid sacrificing too much space. Because the desk is finished on all sides, you can place it anywhere in the room, and it’s a good choice to complement other matching furniture pieces. Just be aware that the height of this desk is limited, at only 31 inches. It might not be the ideal option for taller people or those who want more leg room.

Product Details: Size: 47.48 x 23.47 x 30.71 inches| Storage: Two drawers | Material: Wood composite, rubber wood accents | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed | Colors: Honey

Best Corner Desk

Better homes & gardens river crest l-shaped desk with storage.

This generously sized corner desk has convenient add-ons such as holes for cords and USB ports for charging devices.

It’s crafted from wood veneer that is prone to fading.

If you must sit at your desk for long periods of time, you might as well be as comfortable as possible. This 60-inch L-shaped desk lets you keep all your important work necessities at arm's length, so you don’t have to break your concentration by getting up repeatedly.

Besides being generously sized, it features convenient additions like holes to keep your cords tangle-free and built-in USB ports to charge your phone and other electronics. The storage is also amazing—an entire section of the desk is dedicated to shelving, including cubbyhole storage at the top, and there’s a pencil drawer and two open shelves on the next side.

Overall, we feel that it is the best option if you have an open-plan living room or roomy office design and want to maximize space. Our only issue would be that it’s made from wood veneer, so it’s more delicate than solid wood and prone to fading. But it does have a white powder-coated metal frame to make it more durable.

Product Details Size: 60.7 x 56.4 W x 41.2 inches  | Storage: One drawer, three shelves, one cubby hole shelf | Material: Wood composite, powder-coated metal | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed | Colors : Light oak

Pottery Barn Flynn Metal Writing Desk

The desk can support up to 300 pounds, which is a very high weight capacity compared to other options on the market.

The metal frame is rust-resistant but should be treated with extra care.

A metal desk like this option from Pottery Barn can last for years. Although metal is prone to rusting outdoors, it’s a great material when it comes to maintenance for indoor use because it won’t degrade in moist conditions or in direct sunlight, unlike wood.

Crafted from contract-grade steel, the desk has been rigorously tested according to ANSI/BIFMA testing standards. This test verifies that the desk is long-lasting and able to withstand commercial work environments. A 60-inch wide surface and two long drawers on each side gives you ample space for work and storage.

We especially appreciate the 300-pound weight capacity of the desk, which is quite high compared to other options we’ve seen. On top of that, the double drawers can withstand up to 37.5 pounds. In terms of design, an aged finish gives your home room an appealing vintage touch.

Additionally, the frame is powder-coated to resist rust and corrosion. But you’ll have to take extra care of it by avoiding harsh chemicals when cleaning and keeping it out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures if you want it to last. You can opt to assemble the desk yourself or pay extra for white glove service.

Product Details: Size: 60 x 24 x 30 inches | Storage: Two drawers | Material: Steel, engineered wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: 300 pounds | Colors: Black

Best Minimalist

Better homes & gardens oaklee writing desk.

The clean silhouette and elegant details make this desk at home in a variety of decor styles.

There are no fancy bells and whistles besides drawers—it really is minimalist.

Basic isn’t always boring. The minimalist, Scandinavian-style Oaklee Writing Desk is exquisitely simple but eye-catching. It has a clean silhouette and features four drawers with long gold drawer pulls. Three of the drawers are shorter and deeper, good for bigger items, while the other is long and shallow—the right size for storing a planner , slim notebook, or pad.

The desk measures around 47.5 inches wide, making it compact yet still comfy to sit and work throughout the day. It’s constructed of composite wood, which is not the most premium material but is still attractive and—importantly—more affordable than solid wood. Wood tones and a charcoal finish make this desk a versatile choice for many rooms. If you’re looking to coordinate several pieces, there are matching dining chairs, dressers, TV stands, and more available in the Better Homes & Gardens Oaklee collection .

Because it’s so elegant, this desk makes a great statement piece for your room. However, it doesn’t have any bells and whistles you’ll find on some of our other options like USB ports, a charging station, or the ability to adjust the height, so it may not be the best choice if you’re looking for maximum efficiency.

Product Details: Size: 47.5 x 23.5  x 30.2 inches | Storage: Four drawers | Material: Composite wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed  | Colors: Charcoal

Gimars Home Office Lap Desk

This 3-pound lap desk has handy compartments to hold your phone, tech accessories, and writing utensils.

It’s not the most stable option.

If you like to work on the go—at the park, in your car, or even in bed—a lap desk might be a necessity. “A lap desk is not as ergonomic as a regular desk, but is definitely better than no desk at all,” Dang says. “They let you work in a relaxed and natural set-up.”

This desk is big enough to fit a laptop or tablet up to 17 inches, or a large notepad (not both). It’s designed with comfort in mind, with the ability to mold to your lap and a built-in wrist pad that helps prevent unnecessary back and wrist pain. Thick, foam-filled cushion pads elevate the desk above your lap and keep air flowing. Plus, it only weighs 3 pounds, so it’s light enough to sit on your lap and to tote around between locations.

Added features include a mousepad and built-in holders for a phone and other small items such as USB drives. In addition, the desk features a pull-out drawer , handy for writing utensils and the like. A fabric handle makes this lap desk super portable and easy to carry from place to place.

When you’re done using the desk, you can hang it on a hook via the handle to keep it out of the way. Note that this is not the best choice for stability, and you might have to re-balance or adjust the desk after sitting with it for a while.

Product Details: Size: 22.5 x 15.5 x 4 inches | Storage : Two pockets, one storage drawer | Material: Wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed | Colors: Black-gray

Best Mid-Century

West elm mid-century modular desk with two file cabinets.

This desk is Greenguard Gold Certified which protects you from toxic chemicals.

Some common household chemicals may damage the finish.

Crafted from sustainably sourced eucalyptus wood with an acacia wood veneer, this mid-century-style pick from West Elm is the ideal pick if you yearn for a spaciousness that prioritizes function and aesthetics equally.

The desk features two large filing cabinets on either side, each with two drawers to store your most important files and documents. Tapered legs give the desk a fun, retro look. You’ll notice that this desk is more expensive than others on this list—that’s mostly due to the material, kiln-dried eucalyptus wood. It also features a water-based acorn wood finish for maximum durability. Be careful when cleaning, as some common household chemicals can damage the finish.

Included brackets can be attached to the legs to prevent the desk from tipping. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of assembling the whole desk yourself, you can pay an additional fee for white glove delivery. Keep in mind that the desk is 70 inches long, so you’ll want to make sure that your room or office can accommodate the size before you commit.

You can be sure that this desk was created with environmental impact in mind: it’s Greenguard Gold Certified, which indicates that it’s been evaluated and found not to contain over 10,000 chemicals and VOCs . It’s also Fair Trade Certified.

Product Details: Size: 70 x 26 x 29.5 inches| Storage: Two drawers | Material: Kiln-dried eucalyptus wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed | Colors: Acorn finish

Best Wall-Mounted Desk

Prepac floating desk with storage.

A wall-mounted desk saves floor space and allows you to customize the height to your exact specifications.

Mounting it on the wall is more complicated than regular furniture assembly.

We can totally see why wall-mounted desks would be appealing to some homeowners. They’re interesting visually and can save space since they stay off the floor. You can also choose the exact height for the desk. The downside is that you have to install it, which may be more complicated than even usual furniture assembly.

The Prepac Wall-Mounted Desk is our favorite option. Not only is it attractive, it also features some decent storage in the form of small side compartments and open shelves. It measures 42 inches wide and 39 inches high, which is pretty standard and should give you enough working space. At the back, there is a hole to keep your cables neat and organized.

It’s made out of CARB-compliant composite wood which means that it’s deemed safe by California’s Air Resources Board. It’s not the most luxe material, but it looks nice and should stay in good shape as long as you treat it well.

Note that the weight capacity is 100 pounds—we recommend that you don’t put anything too heavy on it or it might damage your wall. The desk comes with a metal rail hanging system and the screws you need to install it. Before you start, use a stud finder and locate the studs to safely install the desk.

Product Details: Size : 39.5 x 42.2 x19.7 inches| Storage: One shelf, two side compartments | Material: Laminate composite wood  | Maximum Bearing Weight: 100 pounds | Colors: Espresso, black, white

Better Homes & Gardens Crossmill Desk

This desk comes with a storage cabinet in addition to the drawer.

It’s made from engineered wood, not natural wood.

If you’re looking for a classic desk with a bit of a cozy farmhouse feel , this Better Homes & Gardens Crossmill Desk is worth considering. The desk is made from engineered wood, which admittedly isn’t as premium as natural wood, but it is less expensive. A weathered finish gives the desk a rustic look. We particularly like the fact that it has solid wood legs, which makes the desk feel extremely sturdy.

At 47 inches wide, it’s a great desk for small living spaces. Putting the desk together is simple and should take you no more than 90 minutes thanks to the easy to follow instructions. Just be aware that installing the drawers and cabinets could be a little tricky.

The desk comes with one medium-sized drawer with safety stops to prevent you from slamming it on your hand. Below that is a cabinet that has an adjustable shelf inside. The desk also has a built-in cord management hole at the back of it to keep your wires from tangling.

Product Details: Size: 47.1 x 19.3 x 30 inches | Storage: One drawer, one cabinet with shelf | Material: Engineered wood | Maximum Bearing Weight: Not listed  | Colors: Weathered

Overall, we recommend the 17 Stories Kinslee Desk as the best desk because it has a large monitor shelf, ample storage space, and an ergonomic design to help prevent neck straining. It also arrives in a multitude of color options, making it easy to add to your existing office space.

What to Know About Desks Before Shopping

When selecting a desk, both Portnof and Hayslett advise selecting one that’s around 28 to 30 inches. “You don’t want it to be too low or too high,” Hayslett says. A desk that’s too low or too high can lead to issues like discomfort and neck strain.

Layout and Orientation

The layout and orientation of a desk are crucial to choosing the best option for your space. When figuring out the orientation/layout of a desk in a room, Hayslett advises considering where the room's vents are as you don’t want them blowing over the desk or on top of your hair. In addition, she also recommends considering the chair and whether it has wheels or not to determine how much space you may need for moving around.

For smaller spaces, Portnof recommends choosing a compact, wall-mounted folding desk that can be hidden away after use. “If there’s room to spare, try an L-shaped desk for ample surface space,” she says.

Natural wood, metal, and glass are the three most common materials for a desk, Portnof says. “Natural wood is my preference since it’s durable and looks beautiful.” Hayslett also advises using real wood or metal since they last longer and can take a lot of wear and tear, which extends the longevity of your desk.

To figure out the best desk for you, you should first determine how you plan to incorporate the desk into your space and what you plan to use it for. “There are many different types of desks, including L-shaped (or corner) desks, adjustable height desks, wall mounted desks, and ladder shelf desks,” Portnof explains. Figuring out your purpose of use and space will narrow your options.

Like console tables , a great desk should have storage, but the amount of storage you need depends on the purpose of the desk. “If there’s little need for storage, a simple desktop should do the trick,” Portnof says. “If storage is a priority, look for a desk with drawers or storage built into it.”

What is the best height for a desk?

The best height for a desk is between 28 to 30 inches. “This is a good height for everyone, so you don’t have to worry about hunching over or feeling too low when working at this desk,” Hayslett says.

What’s the best location for a desk?

The best location for a desk depends on the space you have. However, it’s best to determine your preferences—window or no window—and the room ahead of deciding where to place your desk. In the end, there is no right or wrong way; it’s just based on what works best for you.

How do I organize a desk?

To best organize your desk , Portnof advises keeping the items you use daily in the center of your desk, such as your computer, laptop, notepad, or sketchbook. “If the desk has drawers or storage compartments, tuck office supplies away to keep the desktop as tidy as possible,” she says. “If not, use desk organizers, trays, and utensil cups.”

What is the best desk for working from home?

Because we often sit for long periods of time when working from home, it’s important to choose the right size desk for maximum comfort. Storage is also essential—you probably want a desk with enough room to keep essentials organized.

“Having a functional yet ergonomic working station is a pill away from having back pain and other sciatic problems,” Dang says. “The ideal desk solution has to serve the basic needs of the user: providing enough space for specific work requirements and decent storage, as well as encouraging mobility.”

Is it better to sit or stand at a work desk?

“It is definitely better to have a sit-stand work desk if your work requires you to sit in front of a screen for an extensive period of time. Sitting for too long increases the risk of various health issues and can also affect our mental health negatively,” Dang says. If you work in a home office, he recommends a sit-stand desk to stay healthy. “The sit-stand desk helps encourage body movement and reinforce focus by changing from one to a different work position.”

Studies from the American Cancer Society and Havard Medical School have shown that sitting in still for hours can have a negative effect on your health.

This story was written by Rachel Dube , a freelance writer who has written for a wide variety of publications, and Nor’adila Hepburn , a freelance writer who specializes in writing in-depth buying guides that help people make more informed purchasing decisions. To find the best desks, they consulted Molly Torres Portnof , the founder of DATE Interior, as well as Linda Hayslett , the founder of LH.Design, and Han Dang , the co-founder of Very Handsome Studio. How to organize your desk

Building desks is a trend for modern homes and small offices, especially if you work from home. The idea is to create something functional yet classy enough to match any interior design. Check out these awesome desk ideas.

Diy desks

The best part about it is that you can come up with your own design by turning to specialized image editing software like SketchUp , which is online and free to use. However, if you need inspiration, you can find many DIY desk projects on the web.

Picking a specific design depends on multiple factors : available space in your home, budget, and woodworking skills. Of course, the last part is optional since you can always hire a professional woodworker to create the custom office desk of your dreams.

Best DIY Desk Ideas to Try

If you need inspiration, check out the following DIY desk ideas.

1. Fold-Down Wall Desk – Small Desk with Storage

Fold-Down Wall Desk - Small Desk with Storage

A fold-down wall desk is an excellent solution for people who live in small homes or studio apartments. In addition to its compact size, the desk folds up when not in use so that it doesn’t get in your way.

The bad news is that the desk isn’t sturdy enough to support a lot of weight, so you shouldn’t try to place anything heavier than a laptop on it. For example, don’t think about using your printer here since the desk will probably break down.

On the bright side, you can use this desk for other purposes when you’re not working on your laptop. For example, you can work on crafting projects, write, draw, and even iron your clothes. Furthermore, you can take advantage of the small storage space that comes with this design.

Head over to DIY Huntress to get the full details on how to make this small desk with storage .

2. Simple Two-Person Desk

Simple Two-Person Desk

A person who works from home knows the importance of having a good desk. This is where you can place your computer , set out lovely decorations, and even put together small crafts with your kids.

If you work with someone else on a regular basis, like a spouse, family member, or friend, you might want to consider creating a simple two-person desk .

This way, you can both sit comfortably while working on projects, which is especially important if the work requires intense concentration.

And, when the second person is on vacation and not working on the nice desk, you can use it as extra space for printers, scanners, boxes, and so on.

You would think that building a DIY desk with drawers for two would be complicated, but this project proves otherwise. All you need are a couple of drawers, a butcher’s block, and wood stain.

DIY Domestic Blonde has all the details for this project, so check it out.

3. Wood Crate Desk – Cheap Office Desk

Wood Crate Desk - Cheap Office Desk

Some people are definitely committed to recycling . They think outside the box for their creative projects and want to find new uses for old objects.

If you’re one of them, you should consider making a wood crate desk , especially if you’re on a budget. It’s a terrific idea since using repurposed crates is inexpensive and doesn’t require too much storage space in your home office.

The good news is that, if you don’t already have them, you can find large wooden crates for free or at a meager cost. These are available in many stores, usually near the produce section of your local supermarket. Just talk to some employees and ask if they have anything old lying around.

You would think that building a cheap office desk out of several crates is complicated. But visit Making Manzanita to check out the intuitive instructions and photos.

4. DIY Farmhouse Corner Desk

DIY Farmhouse Corner Desk

The farmhouse style is quite popular among DIY enthusiasts, so it’s no wonder that many of them have created a unique corner desk with a farmhouse flair.

This design is a fantastic solution for a home office since it allows you to customize the structure and take advantage of two adjacent walls, especially if you want access to plenty of natural light while working on the computer during the day.

For example, if you’re tight on space , you can place the desk against a wall, which will give you extra room for putting together crafts or folding clothes. You don’t need elaborate DIY corner desk plans for this.

Furthermore, if you work with someone else on a regular basis, they can use the desk as an extension of their own computer station by turning it into a home office desk for two.

Our Repurposed Home has prepared a nifty tutorial that demonstrates how to transform two old doors into a DIY L-shaped desk with storage by following straightforward instructions. And, if you need extra storage, you can place a couple of wood creates under the desk.

5. Simple DIY L-Shaped Corner Desk with Top Shelves

Simple diy l shaped corner desk with top shelves

An L-shaped desk is a smart choice for anyone looking to save space and add plenty of storage. It typically takes up less than three feet of floor area, yet it offers work surfaces on both sides and underneath them for printers, scanners, box files, or even baskets.

This particular model features a simple hardwood desk with three L-shaped shelves of the same material and color. The shelves are attached to the wall above the desk, which you can use for extra storage or decoration. We love the built-in look and natural color.

You don’t need a degree in woodworking to make this DIY L-shaped desk . It’s a comfortable project even for beginners since the tutorial from Honey Built Home provides all the necessary measurements and step-by-step instructions.

6. DIY Cheap and Simple Desk

Diy cheap and simple desk

If you’re on a tight budget or simply don’t have enough time for creating an elaborate custom desk, try making this simple model . It looks fantastic and takes up minimal storage space, making it perfect for small-sized apartments.

It’s also easy to customize since you can use different stain colors or paint the finish to match your decor. The desk design is so elementary that it doesn’t feature any drawers, baskets, or other storage space. But we’re sure you can work something out, like installing a cabinet nearby.

There’s no need to create complicated and time-consuming DIY plans for this beautiful desk. Angela Marie Made has shared the required measurements and step-by-step instructions. All you have to do is follow them to craft a simple wooden desk under $45.

7. DIY Floating Desk

Diy floating desk

Many people prefer floating desks because they have more room underneath and don’t bang their feet against wooden or steel legs. And it’s hard to ignore the minimalistic design it brings, especially when paired with a floating shelf made of the same material.

This DIY floating desk is a great solution for home offices because it adds an airy look to the room. Even though there are no legs, the desk sits firmly on the wall since it’s nailed tight. And there’s enough room for a home office desk for two .

The design also makes it easier for you to maintain cleanliness since all you have to do is wipe down the surface after working on your notebook. It’s best to use a clear varnish for preserving the beautiful color of the desk, so it’s worth adding to your list of projects.

8. Desk Recycled from an Old Door – DIY Door Desk Ideas

Desk Recycled from an Old Door - DIY Door Desk Ideas

Recycling an old door into a reliable desk is the perfect project for anyone looking to add a rustic touch to their home office. This design features an old door attached to a long wooden desk base.

If the door has chippy paint , you can leave it as it is to preserve the natural vintage feel. However, you might be interested in painting the apron and legs to a color that matches your overall decor, like black or white.

Furthermore, it’s necessary to install glass or plexiglass on top of the door (depending on your budget) to even the surface. The desk offers a vast amount of storage space underneath, which is great for keeping printers and other accessories.

9. Butcher Block Study Desk

Diy butcher block desk

If you don’t have a lot of time to create a custom design for your home office, consider making a study desk using a butter block countertop and a couple of drawer units to sustain it.

The DIY butcher block desk from this picture is made from birchwood. However, it was coated with a dark walnut stain and sealed with satin polyurethane.

As for the drawer units, you can retain their original color, especially if they’re light since it adds a lovely contrast to the butcher block. On the other hand, you can spray-paint the hardware to make it pop.

How to Build a Desk

How to build a desk

Having a dedicated workspace is important for productivity, but an affordable desk that matches your home office is hard to come by. Here is how you can build a desk easily:

Step 1 : Gather tools and materials

  • A sheet of plywood or MDF board (3/4 x 24 x 48 inches)
  • 4x L brackets
  • Wood screws
  • Tape measure
  • Screwdriver

Step 2 : Take the measurements

Measure and cut down the plywood sheet so that it does not rest on the floor. The top of the desk should be about 36 inches high and 30 inches deep to accommodate a standard chair. Depending on your height, you may need to make adjustments.

In the following step, measure and mark two 33 3/4-inch strips of plywood along the width of the sheet.

Step 3 : Cut the plywood

Cut down the plywood strips using a hack saw. These thin boards will serve as shelf brackets for supporting thin shelves that hold books or other objects found in a typical home office setting.

Step 4 : Drill holes

Drill holes into each shelf bracket using a drill bit suitable for making holes into thin wood; it should be shallow) Space each hole 2 inches from each edge and center it vertically between one another so that they line up when attached to the top of the desk.

Step 5 : Create the back support

Measure and mark a 5-inch strip of plywood that will serve as the desk’s back support for the desk. Cut it down using a saw.

Step 6 : Sand the wood

Sand the surfaces to smooth out the wood. If you’re using thin plywood, you can skip this step.

Step 7 : Assemble the shelf brackets

Assemble the shelf brackets onto the side of your desktop by screwing each one down tightly. Use two screws at each bracket to make everything extra secure.

Step 8 : Add the back support

Screw in the back support piece you cut out earlier at the center bottom – behind where your chair would go. Make sure that these screws are below the area where you plan on placing any books or objects – they will hold them without having to drill extra holes.

Step 9 : Finishing touches

Place the top shelf at a height comfortable for you and fill it up with books or objects of your desire. You can also add an accent piece such as a lamp, plant pot, or something to spruce up the desk’s look.

You’ve just built yourself a stylish and affordable home office desk that would rival those stands sold at IKEA. If you feel ambitious, you can always add other features such as enclosed cabinets and drawers. Have fun personalizing your own workspace.

How to Paint a Desk

How to paint a desk

Here’s how you can easily paint your desk:

Step 1 : Disassemble the desk

Disassemble the desk completely, removing all of its hardware. Place each piece in a Ziploc baggie with a corresponding label that describes where it belongs on the desk.

Step 2 : Sand down any rough surfaces

Use an electric sander to smooth out any rough edges or splinters on your wood pieces.

Step 3 : Clean the surfaces

Wipe down all of your pieces with rubbing alcohol to remove dirt and let them dry. Allow at least 24 hours for drying since you don’t want moisture getting into the joints of your wood while they are still vulnerable. While waiting, make sure everything is labeled correctly.

Step 4 : Paint the desk

Apply several thin coats of paint evenly across all surfaces; be sure that each coat has dried completely before applying the next one. This step will require at least two full cans of spray paint.

Step 5 : Apply polyurethane

Use an applicator or foam brush to apply at least two coats of polyurethane. Be sure that you are applying it evenly across all surfaces for maximum protection. Wait about 15 minutes between each coat, and allow the desk to dry completely before moving on. Pro tip: you can use a blow-dryer set on low heat to speed up the drying process if necessary.

Step 6 : Reassemble your desk

Reattach any hardware you removed, screwing parts together tightly; you may want to tighten them further after allowing time for reassembly. Place your new desk where it belongs, and enjoy your handy work.

How to Organize Your Desk

How to organize your desk

Organizing your desk is an important task because it will determine how much you can accomplish during the day. Your work tools should be easily accessible and your desktop clutter-free.

Besides, it’s also about creating a place where you can focus efficiently on what needs to get done right now. Only then will you be able to maintain a good workflow throughout the day.

Here are some general tips for how to organize your desk :

  • Clean the desk . It seems pretty straightforward, but make sure you go all the way around your desk with a dust rag. It doesn’t take long and will make everything look lovely when you’re done.
  • Hide cords . If you have a desktop computer, you probably have a ton of cords laying around. The good news is that there’s an easy way to hide these cords and keep things looking sharp. Try using wire or cable ties, which can be purchased at most hardware stores for less than $10. This way, you can thread the cables before tying them together in a knot. And it makes it easy to remove cords during cleaning or rearranging.
  • Put everything in place . Discard all unused items and place the ones you need in their place. You can use drawers, bins, and even trays for office supplies, computer devices, toys, and so on. If there’s not enough room on the desk, you can place them on the floor in different configurations.
  • Organize by importance . Arrange items in the most appropriate way, starting with essentials closest to you and ending up with less important things further away. Or, if this doesn’t work for you, just do it chronologically so that you start with what needs to be done first.
  • Go vertical . If there’s insufficient space on your desk, beneath it, or next to it, then vertical space makes the most sense when organizing your desk. Try stacking items vertically in a simple organizer. Or, you can install shelves if you’re facing the wall, which you can also use to keep plants.
  • Reassess the color scheme . You might be surprised by the level of impact that colors have on your productivity. If they’re too loud, they will distract you. So if you want to be productive in a long run, consider changing the color scheme in your workplace for something neutral.
  • Add plants . The right plants not only make your room smell fresh, but they can also make it look great. And this is especially true for small and simple spaces like a home office or a studio apartment. If you don’t have green fingers, consider low-maintenance plants that require little water and won’t need your constant attention.
  • Get rid of distractions . If your computer is acting as a distraction magnet, try getting rid of all unnecessary tabs or minimizing browser windows altogether. Remember that having too many windows open might make you feel overwhelmed.
  • Don’t be afraid to tell people no . Even if you are a fan of multitasking, it might not work for everything, so consider saying no when asked to do something that will take up too much time or energy. It particularly applies to work-from-home individuals who receive calls from friends or family in the middle of the day because they haven’t yet grasped the concept of working from home doesn’t mean procrastinating .

You can organize your desk however you like, adding necessary items like a fan for the hot days and a lamp for the dark nights, but if the surface itself isn't fully serving its purpose, then you're doing yourself and your work a disservice. So we found the best desks that hold things, desks that fold up neatly, and even standing desks and treadmill desks that'll keep you active.

Computer Desk with Storage Shelves

Best Storage Desk

Rolanstar computer desk with storage shelves, what to consider.

Naturally, a new desk is a considerable addition to your home, so when determining which is right for you and your space, consider these key factors:

  • Shape & Size: When deciding on the best desk, shape and size matter most of all. Of course, part of that is determining what shape (rectangle versus L-shaped) and size (both in terms of width and depth) work best for your work style — but on a more practical level, it's also figuring out what works with the space you have. Some folks have a neat little nook in their home where a certain desk size would fit perfectly, while others would feel too cramped if their desk spanned wall to wall.
  • Material: All wood? A mix of wood and metal? Think about not just what you prefer but how much it really matters to you. That's because the more stylish the desk, and the more ornate, very often they find themselves paired with a higher price. Odds are, the simple metal legs/wood tabletop desk will be functional enough for casual at-home work, but if your work is more intensive, requiring a sturdier build, or it will be in a prominent place in your space where its presentation matters too, then what it's made of may matter more.
  • Storage: Sure, if you’re the “messy desk” type, every spot on the surface, from corner to corner, is storage. But in terms of organization, it’s important to consider how much in-desk storage you need and in what manner. Would you prefer open-sided shelves? Or close-able drawers (to keep small hands or paws away from important paperwork)? From foldable desks that offer no storage at all to those with a full bookshelf attached, there's a wide range of storage options for your potential workstation to help keep you organized.

A new desk can make your work-from-home set-up more comfortable — it can even help with your productivity. So find the best desk for your work style and lifestyle, and see what it can do for you.

  • Surface area: 23.62 x 55.12 inches
  • Weight: 37.7 pounds

When it comes to a reasonably priced workstation, over 30,000 five-star reviewers on Amazon recommend this CubiCubi desk, and we're inclined to agree. This 55-inch wide wood and metal desk has a great minimalist design while still offering sturdy support and some simple storage options, including two side pockets for papers or folders and a hook for your headphones in-between Zoom calls.

Reviewers also singled out the legroom, with one noting , “Plenty of room to sit comfortably and have additional room when gaming with pedals.”

“It was super easy to assemble,” another reviewer noted , a sentiment that seems universal with this simple, sturdy workstation, which includes iron struts to reinforce stability.

  • Surface area: 35.5 x 19.6 inches
  • Weight: 21.8 pounds

If you just need a no-frills, no-stress desk for under $100, then Amazon Basics has you covered. This simple, easy to assemble desk features two open-sided shelves that can be installed on either the left or right side, and at only 21.8 pounds, it's easy to move around, whether you plan on redecorating or simply need to repurpose your space. No, it's not the most stately or regal writing space, but if you need a functional desk for under $100 that won't let you down, this is the best desk for you.

  • Surface area: 33 x 40.4 inches
  • Weight: 43.2 pounds

An especially great option for those furnishing a new home or apartment, this storage-oriented desk gives you a workspace and a spacious shelving unit, all for one low cost. The lower middle shelf has an adjustable height, allowing you to customize your storage options, and the other end of the desk features hooks for headphones or excess cables. As for the desk itself, it's a sturdy and stable construct with materials that are all EPA-certified.

Coavas Folding Desk

Folding Desk

  • Surface area: 39.4 x 19.7 inches
  • Weight: 20.94 pounds

For those of us who live in a studio apartment or other small space, the idea of having a “home office” may feel elusive since your “living room” is already also your kitchen, bedroom, home gym, and everything else you need it to be. Having a desk there 24/7 may ultimately be a detriment, not just because it takes up already limited space, but because it can feel like you never get to fully leave the “office.”

But this foldable, portable desk means you can have your workstation when you want it but store it away under the bed or in a closet when you don't.

Reviewers note that, despite its portability, it is “very strong and sturdy,” making it a reliable way to work from home without giving up too much of your home to your workspace.

Haotian FWT18-SCH Black Home Office Floating Desk

FWT18-SCH Black Home Office Floating Desk

  • Surface area: 8.66 x 32.28 inches
  • Weight: 27.6 pounds

Looking for a desk that won't take up much floor space? How about a desk that doesn't even touch the floor? This wall-mounted desk, which also functions as floating shelves thanks to its seven storage compartments and top shelf, is a great way to create a unique workspace in your home. It features a convenient cable/wire hole so you can easily manage all your wires and chargers. And for those concerned about applying too much weight on this wall-mounted desk, one reviewer rightly suggests a few simple L-shaped brackets can be used to provide added reinforcement.

Tribesigns Double Computer Desk with Printer Shelf

Double Computer Desk with Printer Shelf

  • Surface area: 19.7 x 96.9 inches
  • Weight: 67.9 pounds

If you're sharing a space and have space to spare, this double desk can help you and your roomie stop fighting over who gets to work when. With two desks, conjoined by a shared printer shelf and additional storage space, this double desk from Tribesigns is pretty bare-bones in terms of additional features, but that allows both users to customize their workspace in their own individual way.

UPLIFT Desk V2 Bamboo Desktop Standing Desk

V2 Bamboo Desktop Standing Desk

  • Surface area: 72 x 30 inches
  • Weight: 111 pounds

A desk job is hardly as dangerous as more hands on work can be, but it's not without its health hazards. Spending all day slumped over a desk can be brutal on your spine, and at a certain point, there's no chair so ergonomic that can truly undo the damage. That's why more and more folks working from home have opted to spend a little more and get themselves a sturdy and reliable standing desk.

Our recent roundup of the 7 Best Standing Desks selected this UPLIFT desk as Best for Most Buyers, citing its popularity, easy assembly, and stability, ranking second on BTOD.com's "wobble test." While its price tag is daunting, we nevertheless concluded it's worth the cost, especially considering its 15-year warranty.

KidKraft Wooden Study Desk with Chair

Wooden Study Desk with Chair

  • Surface area: 35.75 x 32 inches
  • Weight: 49.4 pounds

If working from home taught you that you simply can't focus without a desk, why are you letting the little scholar in your home do their homework slouched over the kitchen table? Get them a desk of their very own, like this KidKraft wooden study desk.

It offers everything they might need, from a corkboard to a dry erase board, divided shelves for books and folders, and even drawers for storage. That’s right, storage. This desk helps solve “Do your homework” and “Clean your room” all at once.

Goplus 3-in-1 Treadmill with Desk

3-in-1 Treadmill with Desk

  • Surface area: 28.5 x 13.5 inches
  • Weight: 73.5 pounds

Trying to fit a workout into a workday can be a real challenge, but being glued to a screen all day isn't going to do your glutes any favors. So if you want to stroll while you scroll, and add some home gym to your home office, why not opt for a treadmill desk?

This Goplus 3-in-1 treadmill has jogging, running, and walking modes, with arms you can raise and lower to function either as handles or a full desk.

Naturally, it's not the most spacious workstation, and trying to work a full day with overtime while walking would give you a step count that would make The Proclaimers jealous, but if you want a piece of workout equipment that can also occasionally be work-friendly, this is the way to go.

Vasagle 54-Inch L-Shaped Corner Desk

54-Inch L-Shaped Corner Desk

  • Surface area: 54.3 x 54.3 inches
  • Weight: 55.1 pounds

If you've only ever worked with regular rectangle desks before, an L-shaped desk is a great way to bring new life to your workspace. Not only do you get to increase the surface area of your workspace, but having that 90-degree angle helps you divide your workspace into two or even three designated areas, either for dual monitors or just to have a spot away from the screen to focus on paperwork or other tasks.

For the ideal L-shaped desk, we recommend the Vasagle 54-Inch. Its price point might give one pause, wondering, “What’s the catch?” but, in fact, many of its 7,000-plus 5-star reviewers note that it's easy to assemble , spacious , and sturdy . It even features two shelves for additional storage and should fit neatly into the corner of whatever room you place it in, helping you make the most of your space.

Cute Desk Decorating Ideas for an Aesthetic Homework Space

This post may contain affiliate links · This blog generates income via ads

As the kids head back to school, it’s time to start thinking about how to create an inspiring homework and study space for the coming year. You don’t have to break the bank to create a beautiful workspace; you simply need a few easy ideas to make an aesthetic desk area. In today’s blog post, I’m sharing some of the cutest and easiest ways to decorate a desk space for back-to-school season and beyond. (P.S: You can also use these ideas for your own work-at-home desk area or your office spaces!)

desk in homework

I recently gave my daughter’s room a teen room makeover with a loft bed; you can check out the full makeover right here. Let’s dive in to how we setup and organized her desk area, and how you too can create an organized, personalized workspace for your child… or for yourself!

Watch my video for all my cute desk decorating ideas

(The video below was sponsored by Cricut Canada)

Personalize It

To make you child’s desk area feel personal and match their style, consider adding some themed art or decals to the wall area. Come up with a fun theme that matches their personality, and purchase or create artwork to match. Consider painting the wall behind the desk in a pop of color that goes with the theme. Installing some removable wallpaper is also a fun update. Look for cute desk accessories like a mouse pad, small rug, desk lamp and office chair that further complement the mood and match the color palette.

For Little A’s new desk under her loft bed, I created a crystal & moon themed decal with my Cricut Maker and applied that to the wall. She loves collecting crystals, and this was the perfect, personal touch!

Use Multi-Functional Storage

Staying organized is a crucial element of maintaining a beautiful workspace. Try to minimize clutter and opt for multi-functional storage solutions. You can find functional desktop organizers and decorate them to fit your child’s aesthetic. With multi-functional storage, you can have everything you need within reach.

I found this handy desk organizer with drawers here on Amazon, and then I used my Cricut to cut out some labels and a crystal-themed design. I applied the labels to the drawers to help my daughter stay organized. The cute crystal design added to the top of the organizer matches her theme. Inside the organizer, she has lots of room for her favourite pens, pencils, markers, Post-It Notes, clips and more.

If you don’t have lots of desk drawers, you may want to consider multiple desk organizers for larger items like stationery and folders.

Keep Cords in Check

Messy power cords and cables everywhere is a common problem that can ruin the aesthetic of a desk. To keep cords at bay, consider using cord organizers or clips like these ones .. For cords that aren’t in use, wrap them neatly and secure them with a cord storage strap.

desk in homework

For my daughter’s homework desk, I made some DIY cord wraps with faux leather and velcro with my Cricut Maker. Then, I labeled some clear pencil cases to store the neatly wrapped cords and chargers all in one place.

Hang Some Inspiration

Whether it’s photos of your family or images that inspire your child, hanging items on the wall near their desk can add a personal touch to their workspace. From motivational quotes to photos of loved ones or even their creative work, framing them by the desk can create a wall decor that is both inspiring and functional.

If you don’t want to use a frame, you can purchase an inexpensive wall grid like this one . Then, art, photos, or even calendars can be easily hung with paper clips. You could also install pegboard for a similar function and look. Click here to see how I used a pegboard wall in my own home office!

Add Some Greenery

Plants are the perfect way to add a touch of nature and life to your desk. And if you’re not a fan of real plants, opt for artificial ones that look just as lovely and require no maintenance – perfect for kids! Placing a small succulent or a mini cactus on a desk can do wonders for brightening up a workspace. You can also hang a small pot on the wall next to your desk, or place a couple of small plants on a wall shelf. Not only do plants add to the aesthetic of a workspace, but they also have been proven to boost productivity and decrease stress levels.

desk in homework

Layer Your Desk Decor

Lastly, to create depth and visual interest on your desk, layer your decor. If your desk is too plain, it might look too sterile and uninviting (especially if it’s a white desk like my daughter’s). You can stack a few books or use a fun lamp to create height. Use a combination of vertical and horizontal arrangements for interest. Make sure you have enough space to work, but you can still create a charming aesthetic through subtle layering and texture.

Don’t forget to use the walls around the desk as part of your layering and height. Hang hooks on the wall for practical storage, or add some wall shelves for books and art. In my daughter’s modern desk area, I hung a small shelf on the wall for accessories and a hook for her headphones.

More cute desk decor ideas

  • use a wooden laptop stand to elevate a laptop or computer montior and add some cozy texture
  • create an acrylic wall calendar like I did here for your wall, or buy one from Etsy
  • use one of your favourite fabrics to create an upcycled wall storage pocket like I did here

So there you have it – my favourite aesthetic desk decor tips! These simple and affordable ideas will transform your child’s workspace (or your own) into a vibrant and engaging desk area. Happy decorating!
