How does coaching work.

Working with Grad Coach means you get a dedicated, highly-qualified research specialist to help you through any stage of your research.

Whether you just want a little initial guidance to make sure you're headed in the right direction, or you want hands-on, ongoing support throughout your entire research journey, your coach will be there for you whenever you need help.

Your dedicated coach will work with you using three channels: live sessions, content reviews and email support.

Live Coaching Sessions

A live coaching session is a real-time online meeting (audio or video) with your coach. In these sessions, you can discuss anything you need assistance with. For example, you might discuss topic ideas, how to structure your next chapter, how to undertake a specific analysis, etc.

Content Reviews

A content review is an offline review, where you send your document to your coach and they’ll meticulously review it at the scheduled time. They will provide extensive commentary within the document (including what’s wrong, why it’s problematic and how to correct it), and then email it back to you (see an example here ). If you want to have a call in addition to the content review, you can do that too.

Email Support

In addition to these two options, you can also email your coach at any time to ask any questions you have, so you'll never be left feeling unsure.

How is coaching different from a university-allocated supervisor?

There are a few key differences:

On-demand access

A university-allocated supervisor can only spend a limited amount of time with each student and their support is usually limited to a certain amount of time per section of content. Also, support is often limited to one or two formats (e.g., email).

Conversely, we provide unlimited , multi-channel, on-demand support . You can book a live coaching session anytime you need to, get your work reviewed as many times as you like (see an example here ) and drop us an email whenever you have a question or concern.

Plain-language advice

Supervisors often communicate in complex “ivory tower academic-speak” that is difficult to understand and not particularly actionable. Students often struggle to make sense of their supervisor’s advice and feedback, due to this language barrier and experience gap.

Conversely, we provide you with plain language, actionable advice and feedback, with lots of examples and analogies to help you grasp concepts as quickly and easily as possible.

A safe, confidential space

The supervisor-student relationship is a tricky one to navigate, as the supervisor is often the first/primary marker or will be assessing you in some way. This creates an awkward dynamic, where it can feel somewhat risky to ask certain questions or propose ideas.

Conversely, your dedicated coach is your “partner in research” and there are no power dynamics. We create a 100% safe, comfortable space for you to ask questions, learn and grow. No question is a "stupid question".

Combined research expertise

Your supervisor will generally be allocated based on your area of research (your topic), not your methodology. This means that oftentimes (not always) they are not methodology experts and cannot provide the best possible guidance regarding your research design.

Conversely, the Grad Coach team consists of methodology experts across the spectrum of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods. While you'll usually only work with one dedicated coach, you'll have access to the combined knowledge pool, which means you'll get the best possible advice.

How is coaching different from editing and proofreading?

Editing and proofreading services focus purely on language, formatting and technical presentation requirements, such as referencing. In other words, the focus is on the language , not the content itself. As a result, a dissertation can be perfectly edited and proofread but still fail, as the content itself is poor.

With coaching, on the other hand, the focus is on content . In other words, we focus on the quality of the research itself. For example, we look at things like:

• Is the research topic well-defined and justified?
• Are the research aims, objectives and research questions well-articulated and aligned?
• Is the literature review comprehensive, integrative and well-structured?
• Is the methodology well-considered and executed?
• Is the analysis sound and do the conclusions make sense?

Simply put – coaching focuses on the things that earn the majority of the marks . Additionally, we do offer a separate editing and proofreading service to polish the document, once the content is finalised.

Is coaching allowed by universities?

Yes . In fact, many universities refer students to us and some institutions even use our content (articles and videos) as part of their curriculum.

We provide dissertation coaching to help you improve the quality of your work. Importantly, all work must be your own – we do not write for you . While there are organisations that will cross this ethical boundary, we refuse to engage in any activity which may be considered as academic misconduct.

Which universities and degrees do you support?

We can provide coaching for a wide range of dissertations, theses and research projects/assignments at Bachelors , Honours , Master's and Doctoral -level degrees, especially (but not limited to) those within the social sciences.

Importantly, our expertise lies in the research process itself , especially research design, methodologies and academic writing – rather than specific research areas/topics (e.g. psychology, management, etc.). Can I get a coach that specialises in psychology/marketing/etc.?

Simply put, the support we provide is topic-agnostic , which allows us to support students across a very broad range of research topics. That said, if there is a coach on our team that has experience in your area of research, as well as your chosen methodology, we can allocate them to your project (depending on availability).

Can I work with multiple coaches at once?

No. We work on a 1-on-1 basis, where each client has a dedicated coach assigned to their project, to ensure that they receive the highest possible quality of service.

How much does coaching cost?

Since our coaching services are completely custom-tailored for each student, they are billed on a time basis (as opposed to a project basis). This allows you to engage as much or as little as you want, with no long-term commitments or tie-downs.

Absolutely. Your work will be treated completely confidentially and will not be shared with any third parties, nor published anywhere. We can sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) if you wish. Once you have completed your project, we can delete all content from our servers.

Individual Dissertation Coaching

Individual coaching is accountability coaching. Successful coaching often occurs over the course of several months allowing clients to discuss roadblocks and celebrate milestones. I offer four half hour sessions per month OR two one-hour sessions of individual dissertation coaching per month depending on the client’s desires.

$300 a month

Group Dissertation Coaching

I keep a waiting list of students interested in group coaching. You can gather some of your dissertation friends and form your own group. We start a group at the beginning of each month if there are enough to build a group. Each group will have four to six students. The sessions are forty to forty-five minutes long once a week. Students can suggest topics of conversation or I’ll have a plan for what to talk about.

$75 a month per student

Dissertation Consulting

If you have a few questions about the process of any step of writing a dissertation and are not interested in a long term coaching relationship, I’m happy to spend an hour or two discussing it with you. I charge $150 an hour for this service. Sometimes we can solve your stumbling block this way.

Dissertation Editing

If you have some writing that you’d like me to review and edit before you submit to your advisor, I’m happy to do that for $0.05 (that’s five cents) a word. Payable half up front and half when done. Most turn around will be two days. Be sure to check my availability on the turn around.

Dissertation Writing Workshops

During the summer one week a month, I will hold a dissertation writing workshop in my home (when there’s not a pandemic). Each workshop will have four to six participants. I will be available throughout the day for individual coaching and discussion. The general layout of the week will be: Planned group discussion at the beginning of each day of the week, then write, a break for lunch (provided), another discussion, then more writing time. Voilà, chapter done! Cost to be determined.

Should I hire a dissertation coach? How to decide

If your dissertation journey isn’t progressing as you’d hoped, you may be wondering if it’s time to hire a dissertation coach. There are coaches for everything, right? Want to get in shape? Hire a coach. Grow your business? Hire a coach. Learn to play the guitar? Get a coach!

A coach can help you learn new skills, avoid pitfalls, and guide you through unfamiliar processes. A good dissertation coach should eliminate guesswork and help you to quickly finish your project. In this article, I discuss:

• some of the things you might expect from a dissertation coach,
• questions you should ask a prospective coach, and
• some questions you should ask yourself to determine if coaching is right for you.

What does a dissertation coach do?

Okay, first things first: what does a dissertation coach do ? The answer to this question will vary a bit based on the arrangement and schedule you have with your coach. That’s because a good coach will always meet you where you’re at. Every client is different, and I don’t believe there’s a one-size-fits-all approach to coaching. One client may need more guidance with writing and editing, while another may need help with time management. The cornerstone of my coaching program includes weekly online meetings to review, discuss, and work together. Between sessions, my clients may need me to review their work, help tackle feedback, or jump on a quick call to answer questions. It’s important that my clients always know they always have an expert in their corner.

Put simply, a good dissertation coach will:

• remove a lot of the guesswork,
• make the dissertation process more enjoyable,
• provide timely encouragement and feedback, and
• (most importantly) get you to the finish line much faster than if you were working on your own.

Questions to ask a dissertation coach

You’ve decided that dissertation coaching may be for you – so how do you find the right coach? Ask questions and get on the phone with prospective coaches. Coaching is an individualized process, and strong chemistry is essential to a productive relationship. A reputable coach will be happy to schedule a free consultation to learn where you’re at in the process, where your stumbling blocks are, and offer suggestions about how they might be able to help you.

A good coach will feel warm and friendly, and will take the time to answer your questions. You shouldn’t feel pressured into making a quick decision or signing an extensive contract to work together. Ask about their coaching and writing experience and success with other students from the same school/program you’re in. It’s also good to ask about their methodological and subject matter expertise, and what they provide to coaching clients. Make sure their strengths and skills align with your research direction. Also, establish a very clear understanding of each person’s role in the client-coach relationship.

Is coaching right for me?

The decision to hire a dissertation coach should depend on the type of help you need and whether a one-on-one coaching arrangement could benefit you. Do you like individualized assistance, or do you prefer to figure things out yourself? Are you on a tight timeline, or do you have plenty of time to finish your dissertation? Do you value the help from an expert, or would you rather be completely autonomous?

Coaching might a be a good fit for students who prefer individualized attention and have relatively aggressive goals or deadlines. Coaching is also great for those who value feedback and encouragement, and don’t always want to figure everything out on their own.

Dissertation coach prices

How much does a dissertation coach cost? You’ll find a wide range of prices depending on the arrangement, types of assistance, and time commitment from your coach. Some coaches work on monthly contracts, while others provide à la carte assistance. You might have an arrangement where you meet weekly and work together on an ongoing basis, or you might purchase hours of coaching to use at your leisure. Bear in mind that spending a ton of cash on a coach does not guarantee they’re any good. Do your research, interview prospective coaches, and be very clear about what you expect from a coaching relationship before you commit. History of the manor.

30 miles from the city of Tula to the west, about 4 miles from the big old Kaluga road, on the elevated bank of the Upa River, on both slopes of a small river flowing into the Upa, the beautiful estate of Pershinsky His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich is widely spread estates.

The estate was built during the reign of Empress Catherine II by the famous banker Lazarev, who brought from India a diamond that has adorned the Russian Imperial Crown (the third largest in the world) since then. Lazarev received for this from the Empress, who knew how to generously reward her loyal servants, in addition to other awards, and 4000 acres of land in the Tula province.

From Lazarev Pershino passed, as a dowry for his daughter to the Arapetov family, then to Count Delyanov, who after 1861 sold Pershino for a very cheap price to the Tula merchant Batashev. Batashev ran the economy as merchants did in those days, buying up land for profit. He left in his possession the estate and with it 400 acres of land and sold the rest of the land and forests to different people. When the estate was acquired by the Grand Duke in 1887, it was the typical appearance of a ruined lord's nest; a large two-story house was turned into a kind of barn, in the rooms lay grain poured on the floor and potatoes harvested for the winter; the services surrounding the house, with their shattered windows and gaping roofs, cried out for repair.

After many years of work and achieving the intended goal, the Grand Duke almost restored the former size of the estate, having bought part of the lands belonging to Pershino, erected all outbuildings and outbuildings according to their purpose, and the old estate again shone with stately beauty, worthy of a high purpose - to be the hunting residence of its August Owner ...

Hound hunting is the dashing fun of our ancestors, and even now it squeezes the hearts of Russian hunters who cherish the behests of antiquity, support the breeds of blood greyhounds and hounds and all the traditions of this noble fun, both in the rules of driving with complete hunts, and in the strict use of the hunting language (terminology) in the stories, or descriptions of these hunts.

Russian literature has brilliant pages devoted to hunting for dogs (Turgenev, Aksakov, Nekrasov), and special hunting literature in the writings of Sabaneev, Driansky, Ermolov, Machevarianov, Gubin, etc. gives a complete picture of hunting with dogs, all its details, all labor and subtle art necessary for the correct conduct this is the most difficult of all hunts, the most difficult - because it requires, in addition to the participation of a large number of persons and the complete harmony of their actions, also the high perfection of the main participants - greyhounds, hounds and horses.

For a true canine hunter, one must possess not only the qualities necessary for every hunter, not only knowledge and art of field riding, but also the ability to educate dogs, develop their hunting qualities, keep them according to their nature and work required of them, i.e., all the knowledge and art of animal husbandry is needed.

Pershino is the largest hunting estate in Russia at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, located in the Tula province. The estate demonstrated hunting with dogs as a phenomenon of noble culture. The best dog breeds, the best greyhounds, known all over the world, were bred here. The owner of the Pershino estate, Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolayevich Romanov (junior), recreated an example of complex hunting for dogs. In addition to the beautiful palace, on the territory of the estate there were also buildings adapted for keeping dogs, as well as for people organizing hunting. Unfortunately, this special architectural complex has not survived.

The Pershino estate became widely known in the circles of the Russian nobility due to its absolute special role in the development of hunting with dogs.

Hunting societies existed in Russia, the largest of which was the Moscow Society of Hunters, founded by Alexander II, and in St. Petersburg there was a Hunting Society for the Encouragement of the Field Dignity of Hunting Dogs, founded by Nikolai Nikolaevich (junior). In 1912, an exhibition dedicated to the fiftieth anniversary of the Moscow Hunting Society was held, and D.P. Valtsov, manager of the Pershinskaya hunt. The main part of the dogs (about 30 animals) was made up of Pershin greyhounds, in total there were 80 greyhounds.

An example of a classic complex canine hunting, a venue for exhibitions, reviews, gathering of nobles, eminent princes and simply lovers of canine hunting from all over the world - such was the Pershinsky hunt of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich the Younger, uncle of Emperor Nicholas II, which existed until 1917.
