Improving your scholarship chances: A few tips

Before we get into the scholarships themselves, we’ll go over a few best practices when it comes to scholarship applications. Ideally, these will make your application process as smooth as possible and increase your chances of winning some! Thus, without further ado, here they are:

1. Create a spreadsheet

More likely than not, you’re planning on applying to more than one scholarship. Whether it’s just a few, dozens, or far more, doing so is a good idea. Putting your “eggs” (i.e. applications) in multiple baskets will improve your chances of winning one (or hopefully, more than one!). However, applying to so many scholarships can sometimes make it hard to keep up with your requirements and deadlines for all of them. After choosing or finding a preferred spreadsheet program, use it to keep track of the following info for each scholarship you’re interested in:

• The name of the scholarship
• The provider/organization
• The application URL/link
• The deadline
• The account you’ve created to apply to the scholarship
• Eligibility criteria (e.g. GPA, age, standardized test scores, etc.)
• Important contact information (for yourself or the organization)
• Enclosed documentation (e.g. essays, recommendation letters)

Keeping track of all this in one document will make any necessary information easily accessible. Further, storing all important documents (like essays, recommendation letters, or résumés) in one folder will be useful when it comes time to attach them to applications.

2. Demonstrate strong writing skills

Strong writing skills can also enhance your scholarship applications. For one, “good” writing shows scholarship committees that you’re ready for college- or graduate-level coursework. Perhaps more importantly, though, persuasive writing will make it easier for you to communicate why you, of all the applicants, are a fit for a scholarship.

3. Obtain high standardized test scores (SAT/ACT, TOEFL, GRE, etc.)

Before we get into this, we should make something clear: not all scholarships directed toward international students require standardized test scores. However, it is not uncommon for fully-funded scholarships to expect applicants to have relatively high scores on English Proficiency exams (like the TOEFL or IELTS ).

Additional scores may be required depending on your level of schooling and the specific scholarship. Prospective undergraduates may be expected to submit their SAT/ACT scores. GRE results may be expected of graduate students. Across the board, though, stellar grades and recommendations will likely be required of all applicants.

On that note, let’s get into references! Why are they important, and why do you need them?

4. Gather references

Simply, references are people whose names and contact information you give to an organization. These are typically given when applying to jobs, but can also be used for other applications – like those for scholarships! What exactly are references used for, though?

Great question! Organizations use references to hear firsthand about their applicants’ work ethic, positive traits, and other capabilities. Thus, if any of your scholarships require a list of references, it’s best to write down former teachers, professors, or employers who you’ve had positive experiences with. Relatives and friends, on the other hand, should not be listed as references as they may be considered biased sources.

Before listing anyone as a reference, we would also recommend letting them know beforehand. This way, you can (1) make sure they’re comfortable with it and (2) ensure that they’ll be ready if they get a call to speak on your behalf. 

5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Last, but certainly not least, don’t be afraid to ask for help! If you need help completing any parts of your applications, reach out to the contacts listed on each of your scholarship applications. They should be able to answer any of your questions and guide you in the right direction.

Just like there are plenty of ways that one can improve their chances of winning a scholarship, there are also plenty of things that may hurt one’s chances. Here are a few things you should avoid doing when it comes to applying to scholarships:

1. Not writing your own essay

Although you may sometimes feel inspired by essays you see on the internet, or even your own past submitted essays, it’s always best to come up with completely original material when submitting an essay for an application. 

Perhaps unsurprisingly, scholarship committees are very familiar with the range of what students typically write in scholarship essays. Thus, they will likely be able to tell whether an essay truly depicts your potential and abilities, or not.

It is thus best to completely write your essay yourself, inspired by the thoughts from your own mind and the passions of your heart. Afterwards, however, we would definitely recommend having a trusted person (ideally a grammar-whiz) review and proofread your essay for any mistakes. Don’t forget to spellcheck!

2. Waiting until the last minute to apply

This may very well seem a little obvious to many readers, but we would highly recommend against waiting until the last minute to apply for scholarships. Doing so may make you rush your applications and result in you submitting sub-par essays and other materials. Thus, we would recommend starting the application a few months before the deadline. This way, you’ll have plenty of time to (1) write beautiful essays, (2) collect and submit all necessary materials, and (3) gather necessary references.

3. Applying to few scholarships

No matter how confident you feel in any of your scholarship applications, it never hurts to apply to multiple (or many). In fact, one of the biggest mistakes students make when applying to scholarships is not applying to enough (trust me).

Your chances of winning a scholarship are never harmed by the fact that you applied to another. Thus, we would highly, highly recommend that students save themselves from the mistake of applying to just a few. Applying to more scholarships increases your chances of winning one, so make sure to do just that!

Are international students eligible for federal student aid.

Unfortunately, most international or foreign students are not eligible for federal student aid. On the bright side, however, you may be eligible for institutional aid! To find out whether you are, we would recommend checking with your university’s financial aid office regarding eligibility requirements. Further, if financial aid is a very important factor in your college search, experts have recommended straying away from colleges that do not offer institutional aid to international students. 

What is work study? Are international students eligible?

Simply, work study is a program allowing college students with demonstrated financial need to get part-time jobs (typically at their university) to help pay for college and other expenses. As one’s work-study status is generally determined by one’s federal student aid, international students who are not eligible for federal student aid will not be eligible for work study either. Don’t let this get you down, though! Institutional aid and private scholarships are a great alternative option to help pay for college costs.

Do I have to repay the financial aid award?

Great question! If you do happen to receive financial aid, whether you’ll be required to pay it back is largely dependent on what type of aid you received. While grants and scholarships do not need to be repaid, loans do. Funding & Scholarship: Graduate Programs

Financial support for ph.d. students, all students admitted into our ph.d. program receive full financial support., this support includes tuition, fees, $1,004 in transportation and dental subsidies (as of ay24-25), and a cost-of-living stipend ($3655 per month in ay23-24 and $4083 per month before taxes in ay24-25)..

Support is independent of need provided a student remains in good academic standing and is making satisfactory progress towards his/her Ph.D. degree. Students are expected to complete their Ph.D. requirements in four to six years. Financial support takes several forms: fellowships, teaching fellowships, and research assistantships. Ordinarily, first-year Ph.D. students are supported with full fellowships so that they can devote their time to coursework.

For the classes entering in Fall 2024 and beyond : SEAS PhD students are expected to complete two sections of teaching in SEAS in their second year or spread across their second and third years. Both sections may be completed concurrently in a single course. Their research assistantship will be adjusted accordingly during the semester(s) in which they are teaching fellow (TF). The academic requirement for the PhD degree is one section of teaching in SEAS. The student and their research advisor may arrange to replace the second section of teaching with a research assistantship. Beyond the first year, when students are in a better position to teach and assist in research, support is ordinarily provided through research assistantships, or a combination of a teaching fellowship and a research assistantship. External financial support for Ph.D. students

Applicants and current students are encouraged and expected to apply for all non-Harvard scholarships for which they are eligible, especially those offered by the  National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program  and  National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG) . 

Each year, many SEAS students secure fellowships from external agencies.  Should an incoming student be awarded and accept any fellowship external to Harvard, it is the expectation that the student will utilize these funds in the first year of study in place of Harvard funding.   In advanced (G2+) years in the graduate program, students with external fellowships are advised to have a discussion with their financial aid officers from Harvard Griffin GSAS and SEAS about how to best utilize the remaining years of funding based on their activities and academic requirements.

To ensure equitable treatment of all students, the coordination of external award benefits with a student’s existing funding package is determined by the Harvard Griffin GSAS financial aid officer in consultation with SEAS.

Currently, PhD students with external support are eligible for a SEAS-sponsored academic incentive.  PhD students who bring in open, competitive external fellowships that are equal to 50% or more of total their support (tuition/fees + stipend) will receive a supplemental award of $3,000 in the first year of the external fellowship.  PhD students who bring in open external competitive external fellowships that are not 50% or more of their total support and are at least $10,000 (tuition/fees + stipend or salary) will receive a supplemental award of $1,000.  The full $3,000 bonus may also be awarded in certain cases of multi-year fellowships depending on the total amount of support provided.This policy is subject to review and change.

Financial support for terminal masters students (M.E. & S.M.)

While financial aid is not available for master’s students in our M.E. and S.M. programs, there are a variety of funding opportunities available. Prospective students are encouraged to apply for independent grants and fellowships to fund their studies.  Information about tuition and fees can be found here . Students in the  MS/MBA:Engineering Sciences program  are eligible to apply for need-based  HBS Fellowships  and student loans in both years of the program.

AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship Program Amercan University awards scholarships to high-achieving international students who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree at the University and who are dedicated to positive civic and social change. It is intended for students who will be to returning home to improve under-resourced, under-served communities in his/her home country. The AU EGL scholarship covers all billable AU expenses (full tuition, room and board) for ONE international student who will need a visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the United States.

Amherst College Scholarships Amherst College currently runs a need-based financial aid program that provides assistance to financially needy international students.  Once you have been admitted, your financial need is determined. A financial aid award that is equal to your need will then be offered.  The award is sometimes called an “aid package” because it may include both self-help (employment) and gift aid (scholarships and grants).

Berea College Scholarships All admitted international students receive financial aid and scholarships that cover 100% of tuition, room, board, and fees for the first year of enrollment.  In subsequent years, international students are expected to save $1,000 (US) to contribute toward their expenses. The College does provide summer jobs to international students so that they may meet this obligation.

Wien International Scholarship Program (WISP) at Brandeis University The Wien International Scholarship Program (WISP) at Brandeis University, established in 1958, offers students from all over the world to pursue an undergraduate programme at the University and become active global citizens.  This scholarship meets the full demonstrated financial need of each recipient.

Clark University Scholarships Clark University offers the Clark   Presidential Scholarships which is a prestigious award for students whose academic record and leadership potential places them at the very top of Clark’s applicant pool. The scholarships are awarded to approximately five students each year. It covers full tuition, on-campus room and board for all four years, regardless of a family’s financial need.

Colby-Sawyer College Scholarships International students are eligible for merit-based financial aid offered by Colby-Sawyer College. The scholarship value increases based on academic ability (measured in GPA) and ranging up to $8,000 per year. The college does not meet full financial need.

Concordia College Scholarships Concordia prizes the contributions international students make on campus and is pleased to provide partial financial assistance to international students. The International Student Merit Scholarships based on academic ability and family need, ranges from $11,000 to $17,000 per year. Concordia also offers two annual, renewable scholarships of at least 50% of tuition to selected international undergraduate students dedicated to advancing intercultural learning and understanding at Concordia.

Dartmouth College Scholarships Dartmouth College meets the demonstrated need of all admitted undergraduates, including those from other countries. Dartmouth College has scholarships and loans available to international students, which includes an allowance for travel to the U.S..

East Tennessee State University East Tennessee State University (ETSU) offers the International Students Academic Merit Scholarship for new international students seeking a graduate or undergraduate degree. The scholarship value per academic year is and $5000-$9000.

East West Center Graduate Degree Fellowships The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship provides funding for up to 24 months for Master’s or Doctoral degree study for graduate students from Asia, the Pacific, and the U.S. to participate in the educational, residential, and leadership development programs at the East-West Center while pursuing graduate study at the University of Hawai’i.

Emory College Scholarships Emory College offers need-based financial aid awards to a select group of international students each year. As well, international applicants are encouraged to apply for partial to full merit-based scholarships through the Emory University Scholars Program (November 15 deadline).

Illinois Wesleyan University Scholarships Merit-based scholarships are offered to qualified international applicants with outstanding academic achievement and test scores on the required entrance exams. These awards range from $16,000 to $30,000 per year and are renewable for up to four years.  In addition, two full-tuition President’s International Student Scholarships may be awarded each year to qualified international students for up to four years of study.

Iowa State University International Merit Scholarships International freshmen will be considered for a limited number of merit scholarships. Scholarship selection is competitive based on a holistic review of SAT or ACT scores and high school marks/grades.  The awards range from $2,000 to $10,000 per year and are renewable.

Michigan State University International Scholarships Michigan University provides a limited number of scholarship and grants to deserving international students at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.  These financial packages are not designed to support your full academic program at MSU.

New York University Wagner Scholarships The merit scholarships are offered to a limited number of admitted students each application cycle, including international students.  The scholarships are partial to full tuition scholarships ranging from $25,000-$47,000.

Oregon University Scholarships Each year, the University of Oregon awards more than $2.5 million in financial aid and scholarships to international students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. One of their scholarship programs is the ICSP Scholarship which awards tuition-waiver scholarships ranging from partial to full tuition for up to 15 credits per term each year. Scholarships are based on financial need, academic merit, and the ability to make presentations to diverse groups of people.

Wesleyan University Scholarships Financial aid for foreign students is extremely limited and is awarded on the basis of both exceptional qualifications and demonstrated need. The Freeman Asian Scholars Program , provides full tuition scholarships for a four-year course of study at Wesleyan toward a bachelor’s degree for 11 exceptionally able Asian students. In addition to the 11 Freeman Asian Scholars, the University is expected to offer financial assistance to approximately 40-45 foreign students from a pool of approximately 2,800 international applicants applying for financial aid.

University of the West Scholarships The University of the West offers scholarships to new international students who achieve high academic standards and demonstrate a financial need. For incoming students, the scholarship ranges from $6,000-10,000 per year. For continuing students, the dean’s and president’s scholarship covers 7.5-15 undergraduate units per semester or 6-12 graduate units per semester.

Alberta Scholarships Program – Sir James Lougheed Awards of Distinction studentaid.alberta.ca Applicants must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada, be Alberta residents, and be enrolled or planning to enroll full-time in a graduate program at an institution outside of Alberta. There is a lifetime maximum of two awards per student. At the doctoral level, students must have completed at least one full year of graduate study or a master’s degree.

American Association of University Women aauw.org International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institutions are supported.

American-Scandinavian Foundation amscan.org The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers over $500,000 in funding to Scandinavians to undertake study or research programs (usually at the graduate level) in the United States for up to one year. King’s-China Scholarship Council PhD Scholarship programme (K-CSC) 2023-24

King's College London and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) hold an agreement to jointly fund PhD students to pursue research degrees at King's College London.

As part of the agreement, successful students will receive a scholarship that covers the tuition fee, an annual living allowance that includes overseas student health cover, a return airfare to London and visa application fees.

Please be aware that students funded through this scheme must abide by any additional terms and conditions set by the CSC. Scholars will be required to enter into a legally binding agreement with the CSC before they are able to take up the scholarship. If there are any significant developments that could affect/hamper a scholar's expected completion of the PhD, scholars are advised to get in touch with the Education Section in the Chinese Embassy.

6 Canadian PhD scholarships for international students in 2022

There are many excellent countries for international students wishing to pursue their PhD studies on a scholarship. Canada is one of them – it has been voted the most attractive study destination by agents in the 2021 survey , thanks to how well the Trudeau administration took care of international students at the height of the pandemic last year.

Canada is well-known for being a safe, stable, open and welcoming country as well. In the same 2021 survey, Canada emerged as tops for safety and openness – factors that are critical to all migrants seeking a life in a foreign land, especially for international students.

Understandably, a PhD can involve great costs since it takes on average three to four years to complete; if you are an international student, from a country with less global spending power, living and travel costs, will add up too.

Fortunately, Canada has several scholarships that can help alleviate these, offered by provinces and universities alike – both provincial and university-specific ones. We round up a list of six Canadian PhD scholarships to help you start your application for the 2022 academic year.

Ontario Trillium Scholarship – Western University

The Ontario Trillium Scholarship (OTS) aims to attract outstanding candidates to come to Ontario for their PhD studies. Particularly, if you want to apply to Western University , you should express your interest to the graduate programme chair (Director or Associate Dean) of your admitting programme in order to be nominated for the OTS.

To be eligible for applying, you should be an international student, be willing to be physically present at the university at the time of studies, is not registered with any other Canadian institution, have an excellent academic record and research experience, and need to have achieved a minimum of 80% in two of your most recent years of full-time study. You may be required to demonstrate English language proficiency as well.

Successful applicants starting their PhD programme will get 40,000 Canadian dollars each year, which can be renewed for up to four years.

University of Alberta

Next on the list of Canadian PhD scholarships is the University of Alberta Graduate Entrance scholarship . Located in Alberta, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research at  University of Alberta disburses around CA$26 million in scholarships every year. 

If you plan to register for doctoral studies at the University of Alberta, you are eligible for this one-off Graduate Entrance scholarship worth CA$21,000. This may commence either on Jan. 1 or Sep. 1, and cannot be renewed at all.

You are allowed to hold any number of University of Alberta awards concurrently with this scholarship but not the Tri-Council Top-up awards at the same time. Examples include the Walter H Johns Graduate Fellowship and President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction and the Graduate Entrance 14 Scholarship tuition fee top up at the same time.

University of Montreal

The third Canadian PhD scholarship offering is administered by the University of Montreal in Quebec. Ranked 88th in the world (Times Higher Education ranking 2022) and fourth in Canada for volume of research activities, this university attracts over 45,000 students out of which 8,500 are international.

In addition to the Doctoral Scholarship (CA$7,000 – renewable once, for students who have done their master’s degree at this university), you can apply for the Mackenzie King Scholarship (CA$8,500 for one year – application deadline is Feb. 1, 2022). You can submit an application for the University of Montreal exemption grant (ranging from CA$ 2,078.10 to CA$12,465.60 depending on your academic record, no separate application needed) as well.

University of British Columbia

One of the top 20 public universities in the world, the University of British Columbia is ranking 37th by the Times Higher Education rankings 2022, and one of three Canadian universities to make it to the top 50. Over 56,000 students study at the University’s two campuses in the Okanagan Valley and Vancouver.

For students wanting to do a PhD at this University, the Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF) is an outstanding choice. You will receive CA$18,200 as your annual stipend, and full tuition coverage for up to four years of your PhD studies.

You can apply to your preferred Graduate Programme; all PhD applicants are qualified to apply for this Scholarship. Upon selecting the best applicants, the Graduate Programme will inform Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies about their choices.

University of Lethbridge

Located in Southern Alberta, the University of Lethbridge is one of Canada’s top three research universities, a record they have held for the past four consecutive years. The University is ranked among the 6% of world universities for research performance as well.

That is why the University of Lethbridge Graduate Research Award has been designed for incoming graduate applicants of all disciplines except Education. With a value up to CA$21,000, you can combine this Award with the Graduate Assistantship and/or any Research Stipend provided by a Faculty Member, but not with other scholarships such as the Dean’s Scholarship.

University of Windsor

The University of Windsor is the final university on this list of Canadian PhD scholarships. As a comprehensive university located in Canada’s southernmost city overlooking the Detroit River, the University of Windsor offers their 16,000 students a wide variety of courses.

PhD applicants can apply for the Graduate Entrance Scholarship worth CA$7,500 for up to four years. This Scholarship has three application deadlines: the first day of January, May and September – you must have achieved a minimum of 80% average as well.

Other awards for international PhD applicants include the Ontario Graduate Scholarship . Depending on how many months you have completed your PhD studies at the time of application, you may receive up to CA$15,000 (three terms of CA$5,000 each) of funding – the application deadline is Jan. 12, 2022.

All in all, these are great Canadian PhD scholarships if you are an international student looking to start your PhD studies in safe and stable Canada in 2022.

What the scholarship covers

Each of the 50 scholarships available provides the following support during the 3.5 years of study:

This competitive scheme has higher than usual eligibility requirements, attracting candidates that show excellent academic performance and promising research potential.

The scholarship applies to both full- and part-time study.

Academic criteria

• Candidates must be in receipt of, or due to receive, a  first class or equivalent  in an undergraduate or integrated Masters degree; or if this has not been achieved
• Candidates must be in receipt of (or where this has yet to be received be able to provide evidence of high performance that will lead to) a distinction in a standalone Master’s qualification.

This allows candidates who have demonstrated excellence at Master's level, but not achieved a first class undergraduate degree, to be able to apply to the scheme.

Candidates with only a single undergraduate degree or integrated Master’s must still must be in receipt of, or due to receive, a first class or equivalent.

Other criteria

• Applications are accepted from talented candidates from Imperial College London, the UK and worldwide. There are no restrictions on nationality, although some departments may be unable to support international candidates.
• The scheme is only open to new PhD applications. Current registered Imperial PhD students are  not eligible  to be considered for a President's PhD Scholarship.

• You must have made contact with a supervisor in an academic department at Imperial College London who has agreed to supervise your research project.

• There isn't specific scholarship application form. 
• You should submit your application for admission to study at Imperial through our  online admissions system  and your department will put you forward for the scholarship based on academic merit and potential.

• For the 2024–25 academic year, the earliest start date for funded places is 1 August 2024, the latest start date is 1 November 2024.

50 scholarship places are available. Applications will be reviewed by a two-stage process:

• Candidates meeting or predicted to meet the eligibility criteria will be reviewed by the Department to which they have applied. Departments will select a shortlist of candidates to present to the College Selection Panel for consideration. 
• A Faculty allocation stage will score and rank candidates in Departmental shortlists, making initial offers to the most promising candidates. Faculty Vice Deans present these candidates with justification for offers at the College Selection Panel.
• The College Selection Panel makes additional offers from a ring-fenced allocation to candidates that meet widening participation or other strategic alignment goals. 

Assessment criteria

Candidates are assessed by the Faculties and College Selection Panel against the following criteria:

• past academic results
• transcripts
• relative class position
• distinctions
• the candidate’s research experience to date
• their interest in discovery
• the research plan and its potential contribution as described in their research proposal
• the departmental statement, which also reflects on performance at interview

Successful candidates will receive written confirmation of their scholarship. Any offer of a PhD place will be conditional on the candidate receiving the predicted qualifications.

Applicants not selected for the scholarship will automatically be considered for a standard PhD.

For example, Murdoch University requires an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with no band less than 6.0, while Monash University requires a TOEFL score of at least 79 with no sub-score less than 12.

2023-2024 Application Deadline: Sept. 30, 2023

The Center for International Studies is thrilled to announce its third annual call for applications for undergraduate or graduate funding from the Thomas and Anne Walker Latin American Studies Endowment.

Founded in honor of Dr. Thomas Walker, professor emeritus of Political Science and longtime director of the Latin American Studies program at Ohio University, and his wife Anne Walker, the Walker Fund provides financial support for students whose research and academic pursuits advance the study of Latin America and awareness of the region and its global relevance.

A $700 award will be granted for the 2023-24 academic year. Latin American Studies graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be enrolled OHIO students or have been accepted for admission to the university and must demonstrate academic merit. Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and graduate applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Applications must include a 500-word word narrative that explains how the funds will be used to support research or academic work in the field of Latin American Studies. Additionally, the application should include a CV, a transcript or DARS, and contact information for two (2) references familiar with the applicant’s academic performance and/or research. The David M. Crane Graduate Fellowship for International Affairs

2024-2025 application deadline: March 8, 2024

Founded by David M. Crane (MA, African Studies, 1972), the Crane Graduate Fellowship supports an applicant to an MA program in the Center for International Studies who will earn or has earned an undergraduate degree or degrees from OHIO. Applicants are not required to have majored in International Studies. All MA applicants may apply, but preference will be given to OHIO undergraduate alumni.

The Fellowship provides $10,000/academic year, with possible renewal for up to two years. All applicants must be a full-time graduate student enrolled in or accepted for admission to any master's level program in International Studies at Ohio University.

Drs. Sadek and Anne Samaan Scholarship Fund for International Understanding

The Drs. Sadek and Anne Samaan Scholarship for International Understanding is given annually to high achieving students who have education as an area of concentration and an interest in promoting international understanding.

Through a program director nomination process, first year full-time degree-seeking CIS MA students entering their second year are invited to apply by March 1, 2024 for scholarship consideration. As part of the application, students submit a 300-word essay that speaks to their commitment to international understanding either through their studies and/or research, and how they would use the funds should they be chosen (funds can be used to attend a conference, present at a conference, study away, research project, etc.).

Selection Criteria

• Full time degree seeking
• Education as an area of concentration within a CIS program – preference given to student in African Studies
• Preference given to international students with an interest in promoting international understanding
• Cumulative GPA (now or at prior institutions) of 3.5
• Demonstration of commitment to international understanding through essay, references, and recommendations
• Funds to support student’s academic goals only

Patricia A. Weitsman Memorial Scholarship

The Patricia A. Weitsman Memorial Scholarship provides an award to students who are enrolled in or accepted for admission to Ohio University, meet all university requirements to be a student in good standing, and are majoring in War and Peace Studies.

The award is given each spring semester to the War and Peace Studies undergraduate student who holds the highest GPA in the class and will be going into their senior year in the fall.

Boundless Scholarship

2023-2024 application deadline: March 1, 2024

The Boundless Scholarship provides support for any Center for International Studies undergraduate or graduate students (majors, minors, certificates as well as Global Leadership Center students) pursuing a variety of study away experiences, including domestic and international study away programs, student exchanges, internships, volunteer opportunities and research.

Eligibility 

Applicant must qualify in all categories.

• Degree-seeking OHIO students.
• Center for International Studies (CIS) students: undergraduate major, minor and certificate students, graduate students or Global Leadership Center students.
• Awards must benefit a study away experience, including domestic and international study away programs, student exchanges, internships, volunteer opportunities and research.
• Applicants must have identified their study away experience, even if still in the planning phase.
• Minimum duration of travel will be two weeks.

Applications must be completed in one login session. If you log out, your work will not be saved. Have all required information and materials ready before you start an application.

In the personal essay, tell us about yourself and describe why you wish to study, intern, volunteer or conduct research away and how the experience fits into your academic work with CIS. What factors led to this decision? What do you hope to gain from and what do you anticipate will be the impact of your experience? What initially inspired you to travel to this particular host location? In addition, describe your proposed study, intern, volunteer, or research experience and what factors led you to select this opportunity and the length of stay on-site. This essay should be double-spaced and one to two pages long. You will be prompted to upload the essay to this application.

Daniel K.C. Shao Scholarship

2023-2024 application deadline: March 15, 2024

Mr. Daniel K.C. Shao has generously endowed a fund to help Ohio University students study abroad in Asia. Mr. Shao is one of Hong Kong's leading businessmen and earned a B.A. in Economics from Ohio University in 1972. He has served on the Alumni Board, the Foundation Board, and has been a very strong supporter of OHIO's programs, particularly those in Asia.

Grants range from $500 - $1500 for one summer (minimum of four weeks) or semester of study, to a maximum of $3000 for students going abroad for more than one semester.

The amount of the award depends upon the total cost of the program and the degree of financial need of the student. The award can be used to defray expenses for tuition, room and board, travel or other education-related expenses.

Awards will be made on an annual basis i.e., students who plan to study in Asia anytime during summer 2023, fall 2023 or spring 2024 must apply by March 1, 2024. All applicants will be notified of their award status no later than March 15, 2024.
