The International Day of Yoga is celebrated on June 21 every year since 2014. As there is an increase in the working population, the stress one experiences on a daily basis have only risen, and to combat the stressful lifestyle practicing yoga has become imperative. Although yoga and its importance is only gaining popularity now, it has been since time immemorial in Hindu practices, it was first mentioned in the ancient Vedas Rigveda, the Upanishads, and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as well that have been existing for ages. There are primarily four types of yoga. 

Namely, the first type Karma Yoga is the path of doing good to and for others and not causing any intention harm due to ill will, for instance, the work done by Mother Teresa is good Karma as she dedicated her life to the sick. One can practice this by being kind and helpful. 

The second type of Yoga is Bhakti Yoga which is developing a connection with the divine through devotional practices like praying, chanting, dancing, and celebrating the supreme power. 

The third type is the Jnana Yoga which is referred to as the path of wisdom and intellect one can attain by reading the ancient scriptures and introspecting. 

The fourth is called Raja Yoga which is practiced in balancing karma, bhakti, and jnana yoga by integrating the body and mind. 

Yoga incorporates systemic exercises and self-development techniques for mind, body, and spirit. Yoga involves exercises engaging all the facets of the human body which is a great way to maintain balance. These exercises include the limbs, the upper and lower body, and breathing.

The yoga that incorporates breathing exercises is called Pranayama. It’s amazing to learn that one can control the state of mind by the means of pranayama. Yoga is usually practiced in the early mornings where one starts the day by paying respect to the Sun, by a series of 12 postures called Surya Namaskar or also called Sun Salutations. When practiced amid nature, near a lake, or in the garden or park it elevated your experience of practicing Yoga. The bliss one experiences in nature are invaluable, this creates a sense of gratitude to nature and life. 

Yoga is beneficial for people of all ages, it builds your immune system. Good morning everyone, respected teachers, and my dear friends! Today I will deliver a speech on the importance of yoga in our lives and the benefits one will experience when practicing on a daily basis. Yoga is an ancient Indian practice that is mentioned in our Hindu scriptures like Rigveda, Upanishads, and Yoga Sutras of Patanjali which was developed eons ago for the mental and physical well-being of the human body. 

Even though it is an age-old practice it is still relevant, it has gained more popularity in recent years even in the western world, and today more than ever people are in dire need of such a practice that will help them lead a life in peace and a stress-free manner. Due to its popularity and recognition, June 21 is celebrated as International Day of Yoga where people gather and practice Yoga in unity along with the governance dignitaries from various nations. As one is striving to straddle the world and achieve more success and wealth, yoga is one such practice that can center you and help you make healthy choices. 

Yoga will not only help you keep fit but also help you lead a better and healthy life. So, many diseases and health conditions can be improved when one practices yoga which consists of various asanas or postures and breathing exercises as well which is called pranayama. Yogananda’s Kriya Yoga Lessons Enter the 21st Century

An updated version of ancient Kriya Yoga teachings for the modern era

The well-maintained grounds and panoramic view of the iconic downtown Los Angeles cityscape, like the “Mother Center” itself (as the place is known to devotees), photographs like a vintage postcard; as if immortalized for all time. Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) founder Paramahansa Yogananda settled here in the 1920s when he first occupied the former hotel located in Mount Washington.

The main building with its broad stucco facade and large windows is the principal feature of the Mother Center, the International Headquarters of SRF and Yogoda Satsanga Society—its counterpart in India. SRF temples, centers, and ashrams are thriving today all around the world. In Los Angeles, these treasures include the sprawling Lake Shrine where some of Gandhi’s ashes are encased in a reliquary and the Hollywood Temple on Sunset Boulevard where Yogananda himself preached.

“Thought is the matrix of all creation; thought created everything. If you hold on to that truth with indomitable will, you can materialize any thought.” -Paramahansa Yogananda

Paramahansa Yogananda was a spiritual master from India on a mission when he arrived in the United States in 1920 in an America of Prohibition, flappers, and the Red Scare.

Brahmachari Shekhar, a sort of resident expert, has been an SRF monk for 16 years. He has a good grasp of his guru’s history; upstairs in the main building at the Mother Center, he speaks with the reverence of devotion about Yogananda. “Because of his very universal approach to how he disseminated the teachings, Paramahansaji did not package his teaching exclusively as Hinduism, or as any limited denomination of religion. He brought a universal concept of spirituality — Sanatana Dharma , the eternal principles of righteous living… of happiness.”

Yogananda had a gift for marketing. His public lectures were titled to tap into the collective consciousness of a decidedly self-involved, superficial culture. They were designed to apply to daily life: How to Overcome Nervousness and Fear , or H ow To Be Happy at Will , or How to Heal Yourself With The Unlimited Power of Spirit . “They didn’t have to go to some hermitage or the forest or the mountains to learn these things,” Brahmachari Shekhar says.

Crisscrossing the US on a lecture tour, Yogananda would stay in a city for a couple of weeks and engage locals who wanted deeper involvement with his message of Christ Consciousness, Self-realization, and the spiritual technology he brought to the West. This ancient technology and philosophy of Raja Yoga included meditation, pranayama, and the sacred spiritual practice of Kriya Yoga.

Like others, including Jesus Christ, Yogananda has dual roles: as Satguru (personal guru) to his disciples, and Jagadguru  (world teacher) to humanity at large.

The Lessons

In one sense, the Lessons are a comprehensive compilation of Yogananda’s lectures and writings, collected talks and essays, but that doesn’t really cover it. What makes them unique among Yogananda’s published works is the inclusion of his in-depth instruction in the actual techniques of the Kriya Yoga science of God-realization.The Lessons are the cornerstone of Yogananda’s vision. Although he authored many important books, including the seminal works God Talks with Arjuna: The Bhagavad Gita and The Second Coming of Christ: The Resurrection of the Christ Within You , some insist that the Lessons are actually his most significant offering.

Brother Chidananda says Yogananda’s intention with the Lessons was to provide a systematic, integrated teaching of the science of Yoga, the techniques of Yoga, the path to ultimate liberation and God-realization.

One of Yogananda’s greatest innovations is that he was the first, as Brahmachari Shekhar says, “to take that esoteric knowledge of the high techniques of the Kriya Yoga science and put them into a form that could be received and studied and absorbed, under the right conditions, by people who weren’t able to meet him personally.”

The genesis of the Lessons began with requests from people who did connect with him personally asking for written notes following those 1920s era lecture tours. Yogananda started giving people bullet points at the end of the class. These brief printed summaries were the precursor to the much longer series of Lessons Yogananda introduced a few years later.

“In the beginning, you can imagine, the tradition in India, especially in ancient India, was that these higher teachings of spirituality were conveyed by word of mouth from guru to disciple,” Brahmachari Shekhar says. “Because the instruction was so sacred, sometimes the guru would accept a student as a disciple and then he might give them one technique and say, ‘Okay, go and work, practice this in a cave and come back to me in one year, and we’ll see what comes next.’ The student would return in a year and the guru might give him one more little nugget. It was never put into writing.”

Sure of his steps, he pushed on, committed to fulfilling the commission that he was given by his guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar. Mahavatar Babaji himself also personally commissioned Yogananda, as Brother Chidananda says, “To take the science of Kriya Yoga and make it available to millions worldwide. To take it out of the Himalayan caves and forests and the little ashrams where it had been preserved and held in secret for countless millennia, and bring it out where humanity as a whole could benefit from it.”

When the Lessons were originally compiled under Yogananda’s direction back in the 1930s, they were mailed out to students a few pages a time. But shortly after Yogananda launched the Lessons , he was summoned back to India by his guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar, who was getting ready to leave his body.

Yogananda was in India for a year and a half during the critical phase of the development of that initial series of Lessons. Later, Brother Chidananda says, when Yogananda was back in LA, he spoke repeatedly about “wanting to go back and make the Lessons much more organized, a much more thorough and clear offering or exposition of what he had in mind.”

The full expression of the Lessons that Yogananda wasn’t able to personally finalize in his lifetime then became the life’s work of one of his advanced monastic disciples, the late Sri Mrinalini Mata, who was the fourth SRF President. Yogananda tasked her with finalizing the Lessons as per his direction. He told Mrinalini Mata that it would be her life’s work, and it was.

“I want you to finish the work that I have begun on revising the Lessons ,” recalls Brother Govindananda in conveying the Master’s instructions to Mrinalini Mata, “To make them into the transmission of sacred knowledge that he was commissioned by his gurus to bring to the world. He wanted her to put them in final form. She literally completed this monumental task just weeks before peacefully leaving her body, in the summer of 2017.”

Sri Mrinalini Mata incorporated unpublished material from Yogananda’s classes and the manuscripts he had written in the years after he started the system of Lessons . By 2017, she had achieved what Yogananda envisioned: A complete sadhana, or practice, specifically designed for those who wanted to embrace a daily discipline.

“The science of Kriya Yoga was revived in 1861 in a remote corner of the Himalayan Mountains in India,” says Brahmachari Shekhar. He offers some essential historical context, describing the enthralling episode that produced this renaissance. “It happened in a small cave where a great deathless master by the name of Mahavatar Babaji reunited with his disciple Lahiri Mahasaya and taught him the technique of Kriya Yoga.

He continues, “In his Autobiography of a Yogi , Paramahansaji recounts this historic meeting in which Babaji said to Lahiri Mahasaya,  ‘The millions who are encumbered by family ties and heavy worldly duties will take new heart from you, a householder like themselves….Even in the world, the yogi who faithfully discharges his responsibilities, without personal motive or attachment, treads the sure path of enlightenment’.”

“Yogananda saw far into the future, as did the gurus who sent him here,” according to Brother Chidananda. “They saw that humanity would not survive the transition brought by the unleashing of the powerful external technological and scientific forces that we are experiencing now, without embracing  an equally powerful scientific and spiritual technology of God-realization.”

SRF is now offering Yogananda’s dispensation of Kriya Yoga in a new edition of the Lessons – the result of Mrinalini Mata’s work — featuring improved organization of the material and much previously unpublished content from Yogananda. The new Lessons are mailed to students every two weeks and are available in digital form through SRF’s new proprietary app. “When you’re commuting to work, when you’re traveling, wherever you are, you can access the Lessons and immerse yourself in the transmission of divine knowledge that is flowing from these great gurus through the Lessons into you,” Brother Chidananda says.

The very first mention of the word ‘yoga’ is in the ‘Rig Veda’, an ancient Indian collection of Vedic texts. It is believed that the ‘Rig Veda’ is one of the oldest books in the world, written eight to ten thousand years ago. The word ‘yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’. ‘Yuj’ means ‘union’ or ‘to join’. Therefore, from the meaning of the word itself, the idea is comprehensible. That is, yoga is the union of the individual’s body and the universe. Everyone can do yoga. You do not have to get frightened by the several yoga terminologies you hear or the tangled poses you see.

Performing yoga provides multiple benefits for individuals. There are both physical and mental benefits. Regular practice of yoga will help to increase human body muscle strength. Performing asanas will remove the unwanted fat deposits around the stomach and waist. It will also enhance the performance of all our organs, making us stay active 24×7. Yoga helps to improve flexibility. By performing yoga on a regular basis, individuals can move their body parts in all the possible directions as they wish; their body will no longer resist the flow or cause troubles for their movements. The ability to stretch the human body improves the balance of our body, and also offers multiple physical and mental benefits. Yoga promotes better breathing. When we deeply focus on breathing while performing asanas, without our conscious awareness, our control of the process of breathing shifts slowly from the medulla oblongata to the cerebral cortex improves. As this shift happens, our mind gets much calmer. This is what biologically happens when we focus on breathing while performing yoga. As a result, the energy (prana) starts its free flow. It breaks all the emotional and physical blockages that our body has and thus frees our body and mind. Furthermore, it helps to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. It encourages the relaxation of the human mind and body. Many physical postures that we follow while performing yoga are not done only to enhance the flexibility of our body, but also plays a vital role in relieving tensions and other sorrows. By performing yoga, the human body gets prompted to release hormones called ‘endorphins’. Endorphins are the hormones produced by the action of the pituitary gland and central nervous system. These hormones can also be called the feel-good hormones — they are our body’s natural pain relievers. So it is better to try performing it regularly for a better, peaceful and happy living.

Even though ‘yoga’ has evolved a lot from its ancient form, its base is still the same. There exists multiple options for individuals to choose from in yoga. Yoga is available to us in various styles. Modern-day yoga offers individuals to make their choice based on the goal they expect by performing yoga on a regular basis. Some of the popular types of yoga are Ashtanga yoga, Bikram yoga, Hatha yoga, Iyengar yoga, Kripalu yoga, Kundalini yoga, Power yoga, Sivananda, Viniyoga, and Prenatal yoga. Book Examines 21st Century Yoga

A new book out this week, explores north american yoga and its connection to increasingly relevant issues plaguing the yoga community..

There’s no denying the shift that’s happened in the yoga community in the last decade: It has become more popular, more mainstream, more commercial, and information about the practice is more immediate thanks to blogging. A new book out this week, 21st Century Yoga: Culture, Politics, and Practice , explores North American yoga and its connection to increasingly relevant issues for the yoga community including body image, addiction recovery, and contemporary spirituality. The compilation of essays was written by yoga practitioners that are also teachers, studio owners, psychotherapists, political activist, and interfaith ministers. It’s the brainchild of popular bloggers Roseanne Harvey ( It’s All Yoga, Baby ) and Carol Horton , who after examining these issues in their own blogs decided to get more perspectives and go deeper.

We wanted to learn more about this project and how it came to light, so we asked Horton and Harvey to share some of their insights with us in an exclusive interview.

Tell me about why this book is important to the overall conversation about yoga happening right now?

Carol: In the past few years, there has been more debate over the pros and cons of contemporary North American yoga than ever before. This year has been particularly intense, with questions about yoga and commercialism, politics, regulation, leadership, sexuality, and injuries taking center stage. Because most of this discussion happens online, it tends to fly by very fast. As a book, 21st Century Yoga invites us to slow down and think into some of the big questions facing the yoga community in different, and hopefully new and interesting ways.

How is it different than other books that are out now about modern yoga?

Carol: Until just a few years ago, most yoga books focused on how to do asana or understand traditional yogic philosophy. Recently, some important books on modern yoga history, as well as yoga memoirs and collections of blog-style essays have been published. 21st Century Yoga is the first book to feature a set of chapter-length essays focused exclusively on important issues in contemporary North American yoga, such as yoga’s connection to body image, commercialism, addiction recovery, community building, political activism, and contemporary spirituality.

You’re both very popular bloggers. Why did you decide to put this together in book format instead of publishing through your blogs?

Roseanne: While we love the immediacy and reach of blogging, there’s something powerful and substantial about a book. Our contributors had the time and space necessary to revise, edit, and polish their essays. It’s great to have an idea and bang out a blog post. But it’s another thing to dig into that idea, develop it, receive feedback, and refine it. It’s a valuable process that often doesn’t happen in the blogosphere.

How did you choose the contributors?

Roseanne: We made a list of people whose writing we liked, then we emailed them to see if they’d be interested in contributing. While not everyone we originally contacted was able to find time to contribute, we’re absolutely thrilled to have pulled together the amazing collection of writers that we have.

What do you hope readers will take away after reading the book?

Carol: We hope that 21st Century Yoga will contribute to the conversation about the current state and future direction of North American yoga, and encourage others to join that discussion. We don’t believe in providing pat answers that pretend to define what yoga is or should be. But we do think it’s important to reflect on the nature of contemporary practice and share our ideas with each other. Ideally, readers will be inspired to keep thinking into the issues that speak to them most deeply and connect with others who care about them too.

You’ve been vocal about the types of marketing people are using to sell yoga. How do you plan to do things differently to get this book in front of people?

Roseanne: We were thinking of making a video with a woman in her underwear doing advanced asanas. It would totally go viral.

But seriously, we have basically no budget for this book, so we are relying on guerrilla marketing (social media, word of mouth) to spread the word. In the spring, we launched an Indiegogo campaign to cover expenses for the book, and that was our first round of promotion. Our 10 amazing contributors are enthusiastic about the project and will share it with their students and networks. We’ve reached out to the communities around both of our blogs. A small but vocal buzz has already started, and we hope this will grow as people read the book.

The Modern Yogi’s Guide to Reading the Yoga Sutra

The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, a spiritual text written around 400 CE, is often criticized for being a non-relevant text. Yes, it was written in a different context for a different kind of practitioner. Yes, it can be difficult to understand—even more difficult to translate accurately—and, some argue, not particularly practical for, say, a 30-year-old woman living in the United States.

In simple terms, the Yoga Sutra is a manual for the practice of meditation. But it’s kind of like reading the operation manual for your grandma’s 1950s-era vacuum machine. Why not just buy yourself a Dyson already?  

Nostalgia, perhaps, plays a part—both for why you might want to hang on to your grandma’s beloved vacuum cleaner but also for why yogis hang on to the Yoga Sutra.

In our current social and political climate, we crave authenticity and greatly distrust authority.

The spiritual crises brought about by misguided teachers abusing their positions of power leave us desiring wisdom that is more pure—beyond the scars of scandal and human imperfection. It’s easy to land on ancient texts like the Yoga Sutra and feel comforted by their purported universal wisdom.  

Until, of course, scholars remind us that there is more to the Yoga Sutra than what was presented to you in your yoga teacher training. For me, all I got from my teacher training was a conversation about the Yamas and Niyamas, part of Patanjali’s 8 Limbs of Yoga. This left me somewhat confused when I read through the third chapter of the text on my own. Some parts are so far-fetched to the modern mind (levitation and mind-reading, anyone?) that your faith in yoga as a whole may take a serious existential hit.  

So, where does that leave us? The yoga practice most of us know and crave today is the product of exercise routines created and promoted in the early 20th century as a way to tire young boys. Yet the ancient texts espouse a seated meditation-based practice that requires intense single-pointed focus and discipline that would challenge most worldly Westerners in 2020. Then what, really, is the point of practicing yoga?

This brings us to perhaps the most important question we must ask ourselves as both teachers and practitioners: What is yoga? It’s not that there is a right or wrong answer, but it helps to be clear on what yoga is to you . If yoga is a practice that helps you find relief from chronic low back pain or helps you clear your mind after a long day at work, is there anything wrong with that? And, to take it a step further, what’s wrong with interpreting the Yoga Sutra in order to help us in that aim?

It’s time to reclaim the wisdom of the Sutra (and other ancient texts).  

Do What Works For You

I agree with many critics and scholars—the literal reading of the Sutra very clearly describes a practice meant to help the practitioner transcend the mind through meditation. Most yoga practitioners today are not interested in isolating themselves in caves for the rest of their lives for the sole purpose of finding out what happens when we rise above the insidious torments of the mind. And there is no doubt that the Sutra has absolutely nothing to offer concerning foot placement in Warrior 2.

With that said, the Yoga Sutra is chock full of incredible, timeless wisdom that, when applied to modern contexts, can be just as useful today as it was thousands of years ago for the ascetics who gave up worldly possessions in pursuit of transcendence. However, it requires a more subtle, refined interpretation and modern commentary.

I admit the interpretations I offer of the Sutra are not what Patanjali intended. Yet, the wisdom gleaned gives me solace, provides inspiration, and benefits my life in profound ways. Does that make it wrong? If I’m on the path of yoga, but closer to the beginning, am I not permitted?  

If your grandma’s vacuum cleaner from the 1950s still does its job, despite perhaps being cumbersome, and it gives you joy to use it, must you throw it out simply because it’s outdated? What’s wrong with sticking with what brings you joy and gets the job done?

Because The Sutra Says So

Patanjali himself admits in the Yoga Sutra that there is no one right way to practice yoga, and that you can practice yoga at different “levels.”  

Let’s break down a few examples to see how this plays out in the text.

Sutra 2.18: Everything in the world around us (nature/ prakriti ) is composed of 3 qualities (the Gunas ):  

1. lightness/illumination, 2. activity, 3. stability/inertia, these 3 qualities manifest in the world as the elements and in humans through the senses. the elements and the sense organs serve a dual purpose in the world.  , 1. for our enjoyment, 2. to lead us to liberation from them.

The most interesting part about Sutra 2.18 is that the senses serve two purposes: According to Patanjali, the senses are a tool for us to enjoy the world and they are also a tool for us to discover our True Self.

In other words, we can use our senses to enjoy (or dislike) the taste of chocolate, the pleasures of sex, the sight of a beautiful vista , the sounds of an opera, or the smell of lavender. But we can also invert the senses (a process known as pratyahara ) and develop an inner awareness that leads us to our True Nature.  

That’s two ways to live in the world, and neither is wrong. It just is .

There is no “my way or the highway,” only your way.

In the first chapter of the Sutra, Patanjali states that the mind has five functions:  

Sutra 1.5: The mind functions in 5 different ways. Each function can cause suffering or joy.

Sutra 1.6: the 5 functions of the mind are:  , 1. understanding or right knowing based on personal experience, 2. misunderstanding or wrong knowing based on false information, 3. imagination  , sutra 1.7: understanding, or right knowing, based on personal experience is obtained through direct perception, inference based on experience, or testimony from a reliable authority..

For us to know our True Self, then, it is paramount that we develop the capacity to experience the world using our senses, for it is this direct experience that provides us with the “right knowing” that leads to clarity later on.  

At the same time, notice the qualifier at the beginning of Sutra 1.5: Each function of the mind can cause suffering or joy. So even though we may be chasing “right knowing” because we think it will lead us to a sense of clarity, there is always the potential that the very chase for right knowing leads us down a path of suffering too!  

Throughout the Sutra, Patanjali offers qualifiers like this. It is what makes the text, in my interpretation, so permissive. You can choose to live in the world and experience joy or you can choose to suffer. You can use the senses to experience the world or you can use them to withdraw from it. You can practice yoga because it makes you feel good or you can practice yoga to transcend the mind. Take your pick. There is no wrong answer.

Applying Modern Science to The 8 Limbs of Yoga

Take the 8 Limbs—perhaps the most practically applicable portion of the Sutra that most yogis learn about in their yoga teacher training programs.  

The 8 Limbs are presented in a sequential yet non-linear order.  

You can interpret these 8 Limbs strictly as a set of codes we must master to beat back the distractions of the mind or you can interpret them as layers we can cultivate as we live our lives in the best way we know how. Take the Yamas and Niyamas as an example. Although many of these limbs are traditionally translated using negative language, I personally prefer positive, action-based interpretations.

Ahimsa , to me, means practicing compassion instead of non-violence. It is easier to practice compassion than it is to not practice a broad concept (violence). To practice asteya means to be generous and to give to others rather than focusing on not stealing.

In fact, modern scientific research now backs us up on the health benefits of almost all these layers.

We must be able to connect with the world around us in order to live in the world ( Yamas ). As much as we may want to go hide in a cave some days, researchers have proven over and over that human beings need connection with others to survive.  

We must also be able to live with ourselves, too ( Niyamas ). Often, we are our own worst critics. If we can’t live in harmony with who we are, we struggle to enjoy life. This can show up as depression or anxiety and leave us searching desperately to make meaning out of our life. Research published in the journal, Health Psychology Review , in 2017 found that people who have high self-control are more satisfied with their lives. This finding buffers the ancient yogis’ reliance on the cultivation of discipline as a bedrock principle for living well.  

Asana helps us live in our body well so that we don’t get distracted by the ever-changing cycle of pain and pleasure. More and more research now supports the importance of movement as a cure for physical, generalized, chronic pain.

Pranayama takes us a level deeper and allows us to cultivate our energy to maintain optimal wellness in our whole being. At a physiological level, studies show that breathing with proper diaphragm mechanics contributes to the optimal functioning of the parasympathetic nervous system and supports our body’s innate ability to self-regulate through the stimulation of the vagus nerve.

Pratyahara allows us to begin the process of withdrawing from the external world, not to disappear, but to go inside. Sometimes when we’re out in the world for a while, it’s necessary to have some alone time to recharge. This process of “going inward” literally recharges our internal battery so that we can turn around and continue making an impact in our own life and in the lives of others. Susan Cain talks about this concept in her book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking .

Dharana helps us focus the mind and dhyana allows us to move into a state of meditation. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi coined the term “flow state” in 2008 ; this term nicely encompasses what Patanjali originally instructed in the Sutra when describing dharana and dhyana.

Finally, we reach a state of absorption: Samadhi .

But what does this mean? And what happens once we’ve “achieved” samadhi ?  

Some scholars believe at this point you die. I don’t believe in practicing yoga for the purpose of dying. But even if we decide that samadhi is a death sentence, must we deem the rest of the Sutra null and void? Do we consider the Yamas and Niyamas useless because they are part of a process that prepares us for death?

Choose Your Own Adventure

What Patanjali does so brilliantly throughout the Sutra is demonstrating that the practices of yoga can be beneficial for both living in the world and transcending it. This is why I don’t think samadhi =death.

Patanjali describes different levels of samadhi .

Sutra 1.41: Once your mind becomes purified, it functions like a crystal—completely transparent. In this state, the mind reflects and integrates characteristics of whatever it comes into contact with. This is called Samadhi.  

Sutra 1.42: there are different levels of samadhi. savitarka samadhi (level 1) is when the mind becomes integrated with an object of concentration but still has awareness of the name of the object, the meaning of the object, and the knowledge gained from concentrating on that object. you are focused, but you still have thoughts.  , sutra 1.43: the next level of samadhi (level 2) is nirvitarka samadhi. at this level of concentration, you no longer have any thoughts about the name or meaning of the object you are concentrating on. even your memory of that object has been completely purified.  , sutra 1.44: there are two more levels of samadhi—savichara (level 3) and nirvichara (level 4). these levels are reached in the same way as levels 1 and 2, respectively, but by concentrating on subtle objects rather than gross objects.  , sutra 1.46: all the levels of samadhi are achieved by meditating on an object. you must have an object to concentrate on to achieve any of the levels of samadhi previously described., sutra 1.51: and yet, there is still one more level of samadhi. it is the pure samadhi that requires no object of concentration. it is achieved when you are able to integrate the state of true wisdom that comes about as a result of achieving the state of mind called yoga. then, only the true self remains..

Based on these descriptions of the different levels of samadhi , it is possible to both have achieved samadhi (at least at the lower levels) and also live in the world. And sure, maybe once you reach the final level of samadhi , your body is toast. But you can’t get there until you’ve mastered all the previous levels and for most of us that journey is going to take a long time.  

So do we throw out all the wisdom of the Sutra because the final, ultimate, end-all layer of yoga practice leads us to something we’d rather not “achieve” in this moment?

No. Because yoga isn’t just about transcending life. It’s about living life the best you can. For me, that means practicing yoga to move my body as a way to counter the daily toll it takes hauling my 1-year-old around. Living my best life means having practical, simple tools I can use immediately when I start to feel anxious, like closing my eyes and taking deep breaths with longer exhales, because I know that best-life living requires rubbing up against uncertainty, discomfort, fear, and risk. And I don’t want to keep running away from life. I want to dive into it.

Let us live our yogic life in the way that makes most sense for us in the present moment. Even if it’s not perfect, we’re on this path doing the best we can. As long as we continue to earnestly devote ourselves to the principles of the path, let the path evolve as it will on its own time (even if that takes lifetimes).  

The wisdom of the Yoga Sutra lets us live in the world well. It can also be read as a guidebook for learning how to leave the world well. In this regard, it is a complete text that works for you no matter where you are in your journey.  

Classical Yoga philosophy as presented by Patanjali is a whole system, relevant for every aspect of the journey of your life.

Just like your grandma’s ancient vacuum mysteriously keeps running when you turn it on 50 years later, so too does the ancient wisdom of the Yoga Sutra continue to offer its lessons to the modern practitioner. But only if you dust off the cobwebs and give it the attention it deserves.

Respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends, a very good morning to you all. I am here today to make you aware of the importance of Yoga in our daily life.

Yoga is a spiritual and ascetic discipline, developed by the saints of ancient India. They practiced yoga as an effective method of controlling their mind and bodily activities. Nowadays many lifestyle diseases are on the rise. Most of them are either physical, mental, emotional or psychological. People are always stressed and busy in their daily lives so they fail to relax and take care of themselves and their body. As a result, they suffer from one or more lifestyle diseases, such as diabetes, depression, even cancer, at the same time. Yoga in daily life is a system of practice consisting of eight levels of development in the areas of physical, mental, social and spiritual health. When the body is physically healthy, the mind is clear, focused and stress is under control. This allows one to connect with friends and loved ones and maintain socially healthy relationships. When one is healthy, one is in touch with one’s inner-self, with others and one’s surroundings at a much deeper level, which adds to one’s spiritual health. Yoga teaches to focus on breathing while you hold the poses. Even children can benefit from yoga.

I would like to conclude by saying that though yoga is a slow and steady process, its results, last for a long time. Besides working on body, mind and soul, regular practice of Yoga cures many ailments without any side effects.

Yoga has been used to help heal victims of torture or various forms of trauma. Since, yoga is a form of meditation, it results in a sense of inner peace and purpose, which has far-reaching health benefits.

Good Morning everybody, I am Shivam/ Shabnam, a student of class XII of your school. It is a great opportunity for me to share my views on the topic ‘Impact of Yoga in our life’ in today’s assembly.

Yoga is not merely a physical exercise which includes stretching, breathing or twisting the body in different ways, but it results into a healthy development of mind, body and soul. Today’s sedentary lifestyle has invited many diseases where man has limited time to spare for his health. It is also important for good concentration and peace of mind. With regular practice of yoga, we tend to become more sensitive to the kind of food our body asks. With the genuine effort made by our honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, it is celebrated every year on 21st June. Not only Indians but the whole world has accepted the power of yoga. A few minutes of yoga helps to get relief from stress. It helps detox the body and de-stress the mind. Yoga is the best way to calm a disturbed mind and increase the level of well-being in a person. On the other hand, yoga postures massage organs and strengthen muscles; breathing techniques and meditation release stress and improve immune system. Yoga and meditation work on keeping the mind happy and peaceful. When we feel drained out of energy, a few minutes of yoga can provide the freshness and energy back to our body. It also helps in improving body postures. Today, students face many problems due to the burden of studies and feel depressed but yoga acts as the stress buster for them. In many schools yoga is practiced on the daily basis as a part of curriculum. Hence, we too should add yoga to our daily routines for a healthy life.

Despite only delivering the speech mere months ago, Gorman’s powerful recital of her original poem ranks first on Babbel’s list of activism speeches. The Los Angeles-born poet and activist made history when she became the youngest person ever to perform at a presidential inauguration.   

Gorman captured hearts and minds as she called the US public “diverse and beautiful”. Her poem poignantly celebrates that the US is not a “perfect union”. She notes that the metaphorical climb of the “hill” of justice that the country must take isn’t easy. Gorman acknowledges that it is a painful process but is one that must be done for a better future for all.

2. Greta Thunberg ‘How Dare You’ (2019)

Second on the leaderboard is Swedish teenage activist, Greta Thunberg , who, in 2019, grabbed the world’s attention when she condemned world leaders for their disregard of younger generations and kickstarted people to have conversations about the climate crisis that they might have once ignored.

Justin Baldoni might have won our hearts as Rafael on Jane the Virgin , but in 2018 he did it again with his TEDtalk ‘Why I’m done trying to be ‘man enough’’. In his speech, Baldoni tells the audience how he wants to start a dialogue with men about redefining their masculinity, breaking down the toxic masculinity norms that riddle society.  

Boys will be boys: a phrase once used all the time, is now slowly but surely becoming less of an appropriate justification to how boys, and men, behave. In his personal and endearing talk, Baldoni shares his efforts to escape the boundaries of who the world tells him he should be as a man and, in doing so, aids in breaking down centuries-old norms for a future where men can express their emotions without stigma.  

5. Emma Watson ‘HeForShe’ (2014)

Emma Watson offers a lot more than just being top of her class at Hogwarts. Back in 2014, Watson co-hosted a special event for the UN’s HeForShe campaign. Stacey Abrams made history in 2018 when she became the first Black woman in the history of the USA to be nominated by a major party for governor, becoming the Georgia House Democratic Leader.

9. John Boyega ‘George Floyd protest’ (2020)

The BLM protests that happened in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd by US law enforcement caused outrage in every corner of the globe and many celebrities used their platform and voice to share their experiences and outrage with their audiences.  

John Boyega is best known for his role as Finn in Star Wars, but last year he became one of the voices championing the BLM movement, thanks to his powerful speech at Hyde Park. Boyega expressed his outrage at the institutional and outright racism that goes on within society. His speech resonated with millions, showing that some of the best speeches truly are unscripted.

10. Gina Martin ‘They told me to change my clothes. I changed the law instead.’ (2020)

Gina Martin is a British political activist and author. Last year, Martin took to the stage to tell her experience of assault and how she took that experience to create a petition which ultimately changed the law.
