  • Data Science Masters Personal Statement Sample

Written by Ben Taylor

This is an example personal statement for a Masters degree application in Data Science. See our guide for advice on writing your own postgraduate personal statement .

The emergence of big data over the past decade as a power for good – and, dare I say it, evil – has convinced me of the importance of developing and honing my skills in this arena. I’m keen to ‘future-proof’ my career and I believe that your MSc Data Science degree is the programme to help me achieve my goals.

Although I don’t come from a traditional STEM background, having studied a Bachelors degree in Linguistics, the professional experience I’ve gained since graduating has given me a solid foundation in the principles associated with data analytics. I’ve worked for two years as an SEO and PPC Executive for a major e-commerce agency, helping to provide insight into website traffic trends and advert effectiveness, and suggesting ways to boost online performance. I’ve used tools like Semrush and Moz, as well as Google Analytics and Search Console, and crave the opportunity to delve even deeper into the world of data outside of an e-commerce agency.

The potential applications of machine learning and natural language processing are particularly fascinating to me. I’ve watched with interest the arrival of deep learning software that purports to generate unique content based on user prompts. Although the end-product of these programmes is sometimes crude, I think they’re incredibly promising.

The coronavirus pandemic has also shown the value of big data in a healthcare setting, with large-scale modelling a vital source of information and guidance for policy-makers across the globe. The pandemic has also illustrated the importance of presenting this data in a clear and responsible manner and I’ve been impressed by the development of the UK’s own coronavirus statistics dashboard, which I think should be seen as a benchmark standard.

I think that your conversion course is perfectly tailored for my skillset, as someone with an amateur, self-taught background in coding (including the basics of Python). I’m looking for a rigorous degree that will challenge me and ultimately equip me with the knowledge to make a meaningful contribution in the private or public sector in the coming years. I hope to apply my new-found expertise in a company with a start-up culture, perhaps in the fin-tech sector where algorithmic know-how is in high demand.

Data science is one of the most popular career options for students, especially those pursuing a Bachelor's degree. It is also one of the most sought-after courses in universities today. If you just want some ideas on how to write a data science personal statement, then this article is for you. Also, if you’re someone who is willing to secure a career in the field of data science, then it is recommended that you pursue Data Science Courses that will enable you to learn all aspects and principles of data science.

What is a Data Science Personal Statement?

In a nutshell, the personal statement for data science is a document that you write to explain why you are interested in pursuing the subject and what you can bring to the table. It should be written in a way that shows your interest in the subject and why you want to study it. You may want to include information about the following in your data science personal statement.

  • What led up to your decision to pursue this field?
  • Why do data scientists matter? What problems need solving by them? What value do they provide society as well as individuals?
  • How will studying this specific field help prepare you for future careers or additional educational opportunities (e-learning programs, etc.)?

You can also include the following:

  • What are your goals for this degree?
  • How will it benefit you?
  • What do you hope to achieve from studying data science?
  • Why is this field important in today’s society?
  • What are the challenges that you see in this field?
  • How will you address those challenges?
  • What do you think the future of data science is?
  • How do you plan on staying relevant as technologies and trends change?

The Importance of Creating a Data Science Personal Statement

Data science personal statement is a formal document that will be used by the company to evaluate your skills. If you are applying for a Data Science job and want to impress the hiring manager, then you must write a strong data science personal statement.

A good personal statement for a master's in data science must be unique, creative, informative and interesting to read. It should describe not only your skills and experience but also showcase your ability to think critically and creatively.

A well-written data science personal statement will help you stand out from other applicants and make yourself an ideal candidate for the job that you want. Here are some useful tips for writing a strong data science personal statement:

  • Be honest and straightforward in your personal statement.
  • Don’t exaggerate or lie about your skills, experience and achievements. If you don’t have any relevant work experience, then focus on other areas where you can showcase your skills, such as volunteering or community projects.
  • Know the company that you are applying to and tailor your personal statement accordingly. A generic resume won’t help if you are applying for a specific job position. Instead, write a customized letter that shows how well-suited you are for this role.
  • Keep it short and sweet. The best personal statements are between a few hundred to a few thousand words long. Don’t try to cram everything in one big paragraph; break it up into smaller sections that will make it easier for readers to digest.

So now you might have understood how important data analytics personal statements are. To learn how to create a personal statement, it is recommended that you enroll in the Best Data Science Bootcamps .

Data Science Personal Statement Sample

I am writing this Data Science Personal Statement for the MS in Data Science program at UC Berkeley. My goal is to explain why I want to pursue a career in data science and how my experience as an undergraduate student has prepared me for graduate school. As you can see from my resume, I have had many opportunities to work with large amounts of data through internships and research projects over the course of my academic career. These experiences have given me valuable insight into how large-scale computational problems can be tackled by applying statistical methods under tight deadlines while still maintaining quality control over your results.

In addition, I have taken classes such as AI/ML Systems Design & Implementation and Machine Learning Algorithms. These classes have helped me develop new ways of approaching problems while also providing an understanding of why certain algorithms work better than others when applied in specific situations.

I am a Data Science Major at UC Berkeley and have been for two years. In order to graduate with a major in Data Science, you must complete four required classes, one of which is an independent study project.

I have chosen to take this independent study project in order to gain hands-on experience with a data science problem of my choosing and to learn how to effectively apply machine learning algorithms in the real world. My goal is to create an application that can accurately predict where students need tutoring based on their past grades. This project will require me to use various classes of statistical models, such as regression, decision trees, and neural networks.

How to Write a Personal Statement for Masters Programme in Data Science?

If you are looking for the best way to write a sample personal statement for a master in data science, you should follow these steps:

  • Step 1: The first step is to find out what courses are available in your area and how long it takes to complete them. You can find this information on websites online.
  • Step 2: Once you have this information, you need to think about how much time you will have available each day. It is important that you do not leave your studies until you finish all of your courses because once you finish your degree program, there will be no more work available for you. Your ability to continue working will depend upon how well your personal statement for data science courses was received by universities and whether or not they offer scholarships for those who want to study abroad or online.
  • Step 3: In order to write a good personal statement for M.Sc data science, you will need to think about why you want to continue your education after completing your bachelor's degree program. This could be because of what happened during college or because of something else entirely (such as family obligations). If it is something that happened during college, then you will need to explain what that event was and how it has affected your desire to continue your education. If it is something that happened outside of college, then you should talk about how that event impacted your academic performance and why you want to continue studying.

Tips to Write an Effective Data Science Personal Statement

The following tips will help you write an effective personal statement for a master in data science:

1. Use a Template

It's best to use a template that has been created by experienced admissions officers and other professionals in the field. This means you can skip the writing process entirely since they've already done most of it for you.

2. Keep Your Sentences Short and Simple

Your goal should be no more than one or two paragraphs per section (including your application summary), which means keeping your sentences as short as possible without compromising clarity or coherence. If there are too many adjectives or numbers used in an otherwise simple sentence, try replacing them with action verbs like "ran" instead of "ran fast."

3. Avoid Clichés

In your data science personal statement sample, instead of saying things like "I am dynamic," try saying something more descriptive such as “I am highly dynamic” instead because this shows off how creative your mind works while also showing off how well-rounded personas are important traits needed by anyone working at companies when writing an M.Sc data science personal statement.

Do’s and Don’ts While Writing Personal Statement

Do’sDon’ts
Talk about why you’re a good candidate.Don’t exaggerate.
Make it relevant.Don’t use quotes.
Be enthusiastic.Don’t let spelling and grammatical errors spoil your statement.
Outline your ideas clearly.Don’t copy and paste.

It blends leading-edge courses in core topics such as machine learning, big data analytics, and statistics, with a variety of electives and an opportunity to apply these techniques in a domain specialisation – a depth area – of choice.

So, what does it take to get into one of the top 15 programs of the USA in Data Science? I mean, look at it! Wouldn’t you want to spend 2 years here?

sample personal statement for data science

So, let’s look at the ‘Personal Statement’ requirements what the UPenn lists out in its Admission Requirements:

  • No more than two pages in a readable font/size:
  • Why are you interested in this program?
  • What have you done that makes you a great candidate?
  • How will you benefit from the program?
  • How do you plan to contribute to the student community in SEAS while you’re here?
  • Why will you succeed in the program?
  • What will you do/accomplish once you have completed the program?

As it is amply clear, the AdCom doesn’t want the details of EVERYTHING that you have done in your academic projects. You should answer only these 6 questions, in a way that best justifies your interest in this program. Right?

Here is where the Mridul got it wrong.

About Mridul

Mridul grew up in Mumbai, went to KJ Somaiya College Of Engineering in Mumbai, and had a GPA of 8.46.

He had a GRE score of 322 (167 Q 155 V) and a TOEFL score of 103.

His academic projects reasonably aligned with the research work at UPenn, one of his dream schools.

When he sent us the first draft, it was his entire story of all the things he has done till now. In total, it was 4 PAGES LONG!

So, our first revision was to cut short the massive piece of self-appreciation, to a workable draft of around 1000 words.

Then, we cherry picked some of the most notable projects of Mridul, and tried to address the questions that the AdCom was really looking for.

After 3 rounds of revision, we arrived at the final draft which looked like this:

As it can be seen, each paragraph of Mridul’s Personal Statement, tries to address a question which helps the AdCom to decide if you are the ‘RIGHT FIT’ for the class.

Since there was no hard limitation on the number of words, we stuck to around 1100 words to clearly and concisely tell Mridul’s story to the AdCom.

Mridul was accepted to three graduate programs – University of Pennsylvania (MS in Data Science), University of California Irvine (MS in Computer Science), and CMU (MS in Data Science)

We couldn’t be happier! Like this happy puppy.

How to Write a Statement of Purpose for Master’s in Data Science

Many colleges and universities require a statement of purpose for master’s in data science student applications. The statement of purpose can play an important role in your application, as it allows admissions staff to learn about your goals, experience and education outside of scores and grades. This guide will cover what a statement of purpose is, what needs to be included in it, frequently asked questions and tips to help craft your own.

What Is a Statement of Purpose for Master’s in Data Science?

A statement of purpose is a short essay written by master’s of data science applicants discussing their work and educational history, goals for the program and future career interests. A statement of purpose for master’s in data science programs may also detail any deficiencies in an application such as an employment gap, low GRE or GMAT test scores or grades and information about independent study in lieu of other relevant coursework. The statement of purpose provides a space to highlight your specific life experiences and goals in your own words.

What Is the Admissions Committee Looking for in Your Application?

Admissions committees typically look for the following information:

  • Who is applying?  What about the student’s academic or personal background, work experience or extracurricular activities stands out? Does the applicant show a history of demonstrated interest in data science? What will they be able to add to a graduate program environment?
  • Does the applicant have analytical skills or experience?  Data science requires a person to deeply analyze large and complex data sets. While some core capacities, like mathematics, may be taught, a statement of purpose provides a space to demonstrate analytical skills or relevant experience.

Statement of Purpose Format Requirements

While every school has different requirements, the general format for a data science master’s statement of purpose may include:

  • Length: 1-2 pages; school will specify length.
  • Word Count: 250-500 words; some schools allow up to 1,000 words.
  • Spacing: Double or single spaced
  • Font: Times New Roman in 12-point font
  • Margins: No less than 1 inch
  • Format: Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) or PDF format

Refer to the college or university’s requirements before submitting, particularly if you are sending out multiple statements of purpose to different schools.

Statement of Purpose vs. Personal Statement

Master’s in data science programs may ask for a statement of purpose or a personal statement—some may ask for both. While these might seem like the same thing, there are a few distinctions.

A statement of purpose typically is focused on academic and analytical information. A school requesting a statement of purpose may request information about reasons for applying for graduate study as well as relevant professional interests and goals. A personal statement might be a broader essay asking about life experiences and interests—though still as they relate to the program.

It’s important to read admissions requirements carefully to determine what information each school wants from either a statement of purpose or a personal statement.

10 Tips for Statement of Purpose for Data Science Programs

A statement of purpose may be daunting for master’s in data science applicants, but there are some steps you can take to make sure you’re delivering a good effort. The tips below can help guide you while writing your statements of purpose for data science programs.

Read Examples of Statements of Purpose for Data Science

Read samples of statements of purpose. If you have access to successful applicants’ essays, read them. If not, read a wide variety of statements of purpose and notice what does and does not work. Be sure not to plagiarize as it could be grounds to deny your application.

Brainstorm Topics and Decide on a Structure

As mentioned above, a statement of purpose should highlight who you are and how you work analytically. Take time to brainstorm relevant topics that showcase experience as well as signs of interest in the data science field. After you have your bullet points set, focus on a structure that best highlights you as an applicant. Make an outline before you start writing.

Pick One or Two Narrow Topics and Stay Focused

A statement of purpose should be clear and to the point. It’s not a recap of your entire life or resume. Avoid covering too much information in your statement of purpose. Stay focused on one or two key topics and provide plenty of supporting information to showcase your analytical skills as it relates to those points.

Make Your First Paragraph Interesting

Admissions committees read hundreds of applications. A focused and interesting introductory paragraph can grab the attention of the reader and keep them from putting your statement down. A personal anecdote, a thought-provoking question or an emotionally compelling story at the beginning of your statement of purpose can all grab a reader’s attention.

Highlight Information That Sets You Apart

Write about any activity that highlights your strengths as a data scientist. If you have relevant experience on a resume or affiliations with a professional organization, make sure you highlight that. A statement of purpose, in part, is about what makes you qualified to  become a data scientist .

Keep the Focus on YOU

A statement of purpose is about how your experience, culture and background has helped prepare you for a career in data science. This is not the time to write at length about your professor’s career or general concepts of data science. A statement of purpose often requires a limited amount of space. Make sure you are using it effectively to highlight your own strengths.

Be Yourself and Don’t Fake Experience

Take the truthful approach and recall your experiences and accomplishments with complete honesty and authenticity. While it may be tempting to inflate your experience or accomplishments in data science or analysis, misrepresenting data—or outright lying—will hurt more than it will help.

Keep Language Concise and Tone Positive

Data science is used to draw information from raw data sets and as such, those working in data science may need to be able to explain their findings. A statement of purpose is the first place you can showcase an ability to effectively communicate. Avoid rambling, vague or repetitive language and keep the tone positive and outcome-focused.

Double Check Schools’ Instructions

Read and re-read the school’s instructions for submitting a statement of purpose. Data science requires attention to detail. You don’t want to disqualify yourself by not following basic instructions. Make sure you meet all the stated requirements, and don’t make mistakes like exceeding word count or incorrectly formatting a document.

Proofread, Proofread and Proofread

Check your essay for any grammatical errors. While data scientists often deal with numbers more than writing, it’s still important to proofread because it will show the admissions committee you pay attention to details.

FAQs About Data Science Statements of Purpose

Before beginning your master’s in data science application, get answers to any final questions about statements of purpose. If you’re still unsure about the process, consider asking your admissions counselor.

Take the statement of purpose seriously. Often, it is the only part of your application where the admissions committee gets to hear directly from you. A well-crafted statement of purpose can help provide context around low test scores or grades as well as highlight how your experience has helped prepare you for the program.

Whether applying to a campus-based or  online master’s in data science , it’s better to start working on your statement of purpose earlier to ensure you have sufficient time to think and prepare. Since some master’s in data science programs may have rolling application and start dates, it’s best to double check admissions deadlines and make sure you have plenty of time to write and edit your statement of purpose.

Schools may have different requirements for statement of purpose submissions. Check directly with your school of interest. In general, keep statements of purpose concise—word counts may range from 250 to 1,000 words—and focused on academic and professional achievements that may help you succeed in a data science program.

Different schools have different word count requirements. Some schools will specify the length, but others do not. In general, a statement of purpose is between 300 and 500 words. Some schools allow up to 1,000 words. If word count isn’t explicitly stated, try to be concise. These are short essays. Writing a statement of purpose is one of the first steps toward studying and working in data science. If you want to better prepare for your application, it’s best to start searching for programs early to understand their requirements. Students can either look at  data science programs by state  or consider  data science scholarships available  for students.

Personal Statement for Masters in Applied Data Science

Sometimes, it is passion; sometimes, it is desire; and sometimes it is fate. I would say I was predestined to pursue a degree in philosophy because its admission letter fell into my lap in 2000. I grabbed it and my undergraduate journey at xxx University began. It was not quite challenging getting accustomed to the field of philosophy but I feared for my flair for mathematics. I feared that I would lose it; I feared that if it was not watered by academic assessments such as tests, exercises, assignments, presentations, and the taxing end-of-semester examinations, it would fizzle out from my brain before graduation.  It somewhat manifested as I had to surrender and substitute vast mathematical formulas, equations, and theories in my brain with those in the discipline of philosophy just to sail through the course. Meanwhile, I devised a method that helped me hone my mathematical inadequacy into excellence. I made friends with brainy students of mathematics and that helped me mingle the knowledge of mathematics and philosophy together smoothly while my undergraduate days lasted.

Upon graduation, I could boast of the vast knowledge gained in philosophy, but the void, the conscious appetite for mathematics or a field in mathematics beckoned me. Since then, I began improving a more conscious yearning to further my education in any mathematics-related field as only that can fill the void.

Taking my antecedent events into cognizance, I cannot rule out the impact and relevance of my undergraduate study which has broadened my perspective of life and exposed me to the application of logic and the use of premises to arrive at logical conclusions in problem-solving. This has helped me build problem-solving skills, communication skills, and critical reasoning skills among others. It has sharpened my ability to solve abstract or mundane problems and improved my decision-making skills. Also, gaining early analytical and numerical proficiency through the knowledge of Mathematics and Statistics in my secondary school acquainted me with a scientific understanding of the importance of data. A multifarious career in the banking industry has also afforded me several professional and practical courses and pieces of training in banking and finance as related to customer service, relationship management, operational risk management, information security, business etiquette and communication skills, credit mastery and risk management, sales methodology and technique and sales tracking system amongst others. Combining these self and employer-financed pieces of training with the analytic, unprejudiced, and interpersonal skills I gathered during my undergraduate study, I have exhibited immense industrial proficiency in the banking sector. However, there is a yearning for career progression. This desire has brought about my choice to study applied Data Science.

To this effect, I am applying for this graduate program in the continuum of my professional development and to learn and develop a high-level ability to design and implement databases, big data, and analytics applications to meet business needs. I also intend to amass knowledge of real-life data science problems and gain practical exposure to relevant software to tackle those problems. Fundamentally, I envisage possessing an in-depth knowledge of Machine learning after my studies at Teesside University. I will be receptive to other aspects of the course module. Coming to this program, I will bring to the table knowledge from my years of experience working in the banking industry, my natural flair for mathematics, my yearning to learn, and my willingness to offer academic contributions during classroom work and interactions. I look forward to making real contributions to society during and after graduation as I believe your University will provide me with the in-depth knowledge and skills I need to attain my objective.

Besides submitting test scores, recommendation letters, and an undergraduate transcript, one essential requirement of applying to a data science masters programme is the application essay — aka personal statement. The personal statement is where applicants need to convince the professors their ability and worth of getting selected in the master programme .

In fact, many a time, a personal statement acts as a deciding factor for getting chosen for a prestigious masters programme in the field of data science . Thus, one needs to be extremely cautious while writing a personal statement for their master’s application. Not only does it help the university authorities determine the sincere interest of the applicant to enrol for the course, but also provide a chance to the students to stand out of the crowd highlighting their skills and relevancy.

Having said that, data scientists are experts in mathematics, but writing might not always be their expertise , and a personal statement is usually longer than you think and requires to be well crafted in order to grab the attention of professors and administrators. So, if decided to pursue higher studies in the data science field and have narrowed down universities to apply, this article can help you write a winning personal statement required to apply for the data science masters’ programme.

Planning Is The Key: Highlight The Reason To Study Data Science Masters

Although it is stated as ‘personal,’ a personal statement doesn’t require applicants to share the intimate details of their life; instead, it needs to highlight the intention of the applicant for the particular master’s programme. To avoid any confusion or mistakes, the first step to write a personal statement for a data science masters programme is to brainstorm around it and plan it before actually starting to write. It is critical to make notes and use bullet points when planning, which can later be referred to while writing the personal statement. One should research thoroughly about the course requirements and the university, and prepare a list of their achievements and goals that can come handy while writing the essay.

Most universities expect their applicants to adhere to a specific word limit for the personal statement, and thus a good brainstorming will help applicants to keep their essay relevant and to the point. Planning will help in setting the context, creating a structure and forming a narrative of the piece that is critical for drafting a compelling statement.

Have A Killer Intro & A Concise Conclusion: Relevant To The Passion For The Field

An attention-grabbing intro and a hard-hitting conclusion are again critical for writing a compelling personal statement. The first paragraph can create the first impression of the applicant in front of the professors, and a sharp end will help them remember that candidate among the crowd. The readers of the personal statement are the experts from the data science industry and academics; thus, they expect the writeup to be extremely intriguing in terms of content.

Personal statements are usually lengthy but require to be extremely clear in sending out the message. Rather than starting the essay with some cliches, data science applicants should begin their personal statement highlighting their passion for the stream and their domain proficiency. And to have a definite ending, these data scientists must ensure to convey their genuine interest in pursuing the master’s programme, and how their skills are relevant to the stream.

Also Read: Tips And Templates For A Data Scientist Resume

Be A Good Story Teller: Highlight Experiences & Skill Sets

Thirdly, data science applicants must showcase their skill sets and experience in their personal statements without repeating the information that is already mentioned in their application form. And that’s why it is critical to be a good storyteller with their statement, where applicants can highlight their skills by talking about a particular data science research project that helped in solving real-life problems. One can also point out their experiences, knowledge, and quantify their expertise in the field that can help them in pursuing further studies.

The job of the personal statement is to let the administrators and professors know the abilities of the applicants to be qualified for the master’s programme. Data scientists can also mention their thesis, publications, journals or any relevant activities that can help them in getting selected. A well crafted personal statement avoids clichés, jargons, and too many details, and should be presented formally with a clear narrative.

Focus On Your Domain & The Programme

Unlike undergraduate courses, masters programmes are more specific as well as require applicants to understand the domain they are pursuing. Consequently, while writing a personal statement, one needs to sync their interest according to the requirement of the programme and emphasise on the specific skills that match the area of expertise. One can also network with relevant faculty members and seniors to get a better understanding of the requirements of the program.

Many universities are also working on several ongoing data science projects, citing one of them corresponding to the interest, can also be a great addition to the personal statement. Furthermore, applicants can also write about what inspired them to pursue this particular domain and how their work will contribute to the field. One can also share their personal experiences and how that has helped in pursuing this course.

Don’t Be Generic: Customise The Write Up For The Course

Lastly, it is critical that the essay is unique and thus requires to be customised according to the university and its requirements. Applicants don’t have to start from scratch every time they are applying to a university, but they must ensure that they still provide a unique draft personal statement to each application. Professors and administrators read thousands of personal statements in a day, and therefore to be unique, applicants cannot pick up generic content to build their essay.

Applicants can also make the personal statement unique by adding up personal experiences relevant to the field, which will not only make the read interesting but also will allow the readers to empathise with the applicant. One can also add up a few of their failures to make it sound genuine as well as relatable. Usually, masters programmes don’t conduct face to face interviews; thus, personal statement plays a vital role in the applicants’ admission process.

Other Things To Keep In Mind

  • Personal statements are not university applications, so don’t be repetitive.
  • Highlight why this university is the right choice for the career you are planning to pursue.
  • Although it’s the life experiences one shares in their personal statements, it indeed requires to be professional and to the point.
  • Avoid grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors.

PrepScholar GRE Prep

Gre prep online guides and tips, 3 successful graduate school personal statement examples.

sample personal statement for data science

Looking for grad school personal statement examples? Look no further! In this total guide to graduate school personal statement examples, we’ll discuss why you need a personal statement for grad school and what makes a good one. Then we’ll provide three graduate school personal statement samples from our grad school experts. After that, we’ll do a deep dive on one of our personal statement for graduate school examples. Finally, we’ll wrap up with a list of other grad school personal statements you can find online.

Why Do You Need a Personal Statement?

A personal statement is a chance for admissions committees to get to know you: your goals and passions, what you’ll bring to the program, and what you’re hoping to get out of the program.  You need to sell the admissions committee on what makes you a worthwhile applicant. The personal statement is a good chance to highlight significant things about you that don’t appear elsewhere on your application.

A personal statement is slightly different from a statement of purpose (also known as a letter of intent). A statement of purpose/letter of intent tends to be more tightly focused on your academic or professional credentials and your future research and/or professional interests.

While a personal statement also addresses your academic experiences and goals, you have more leeway to be a little more, well, personal. In a personal statement, it’s often appropriate to include information on significant life experiences or challenges that aren’t necessarily directly relevant to your field of interest.

Some programs ask for both a personal statement and a statement of purpose/letter of intent. In this case, the personal statement is likely to be much more tightly focused on your life experience and personality assets while the statement of purpose will focus in much more on your academic/research experiences and goals.

However, there’s not always a hard-and-fast demarcation between a personal statement and a statement of purpose. The two statement types should address a lot of the same themes, especially as relates to your future goals and the valuable assets you bring to the program. Some programs will ask for a personal statement but the prompt will be focused primarily on your research and professional experiences and interests. Some will ask for a statement of purpose but the prompt will be more focused on your general life experiences.

When in doubt, give the program what they are asking for in the prompt and don’t get too hung up on whether they call it a personal statement or statement of purpose. You can always call the admissions office to get more clarification on what they want you to address in your admissions essay.

What Makes a Good Grad School Personal Statement?

A great graduate school personal statement can come in many forms and styles. However, strong grad school personal statement examples all share the same following elements:

A Clear Narrative

Above all, a good personal statement communicates clear messages about what makes you a strong applicant who is likely to have success in graduate school. So to that extent, think about a couple of key points that you want to communicate about yourself and then drill down on how you can best communicate those points. (Your key points should of course be related to what you can bring to the field and to the program specifically).

You can also decide whether to address things like setbacks or gaps in your application as part of your narrative. Have a low GPA for a couple semesters due to a health issue? Been out of a job for a while taking care of a family member? If you do decide to explain an issue like this, make sure that the overall arc is more about demonstrating positive qualities like resilience and diligence than about providing excuses.

Specific Examples

A great statement of purpose uses specific examples to illustrate its key messages. This can include anecdotes that demonstrate particular traits or even references to scholars and works that have influenced your academic trajectory to show that you are familiar and insightful about the relevant literature in your field.

Just saying “I love plants,” is pretty vague. Describing how you worked in a plant lab during undergrad and then went home and carefully cultivated your own greenhouse where you cross-bred new flower colors by hand is much more specific and vivid, which makes for better evidence.

A strong personal statement will describe why you are a good fit for the program, and why the program is a good fit for you. It’s important to identify specific things about the program that appeal to you, and how you’ll take advantage of those opportunities. It’s also a good idea to talk about specific professors you might be interested in working with. This shows that you are informed about and genuinely invested in the program.

Strong Writing

Even quantitative and science disciplines typically require some writing, so it’s important that your personal statement shows strong writing skills. Make sure that you are communicating clearly and that you don’t have any grammar and spelling errors. It’s helpful to get other people to read your statement and provide feedback. Plan on going through multiple drafts.

Another important thing here is to avoid cliches and gimmicks. Don’t deploy overused phrases and openings like “ever since I was a child.” Don’t structure your statement in a gimmicky way (i.e., writing a faux legal brief about yourself for a law school statement of purpose). The first will make your writing banal; the second is likely to make you stand out in a bad way.

Appropriate Boundaries

While you can be more personal in a personal statement than in a statement of purpose, it’s important to maintain appropriate boundaries in your writing. Don’t overshare anything too personal about relationships, bodily functions, or illegal activities. Similarly, don’t share anything that makes it seem like you may be out of control, unstable, or an otherwise risky investment. The personal statement is not a confessional booth. If you share inappropriately, you may seem like you have bad judgment, which is a huge red flag to admissions committees.

You should also be careful with how you deploy humor and jokes. Your statement doesn’t have to be totally joyless and serious, but bear in mind that the person reading the statement may not have the same sense of humor as you do. When in doubt, err towards the side of being as inoffensive as possible.

Just as being too intimate in your statement can hurt you, it’s also important not to be overly formal or staid. You should be professional, but conversational.

Graduate School Personal Statement Examples

Our graduate school experts have been kind enough to provide some successful grad school personal statement examples. We’ll provide three examples here, along with brief analysis of what makes each one successful.

Sample Personal Statement for Graduate School 1

PDF of Sample Personal Statement 1 – Japanese Studies

For this Japanese Studies master’s degree, the applicant had to provide a statement of purpose outlining her academic goals and experience with Japanese and a separate personal statement describing her personal relationship with Japanese Studies and what led her to pursue a master’s degree.

Here’s what’s successful about this personal statement:

  • An attention-grabbing beginning: The applicant begins with the statement that Japanese has never come easily to her and that it’s a brutal language to learn. Seeing as how this is an application for a Japanese Studies program, this is an intriguing beginning that makes the reader want to keep going.
  • A compelling narrative: From this attention-grabbing beginning, the applicant builds a well-structured and dramatic narrative tracking her engagement with the Japanese language over time. The clear turning point is her experience studying abroad, leading to a resolution in which she has clarity about her plans. Seeing as how the applicant wants to be a translator of Japanese literature, the tight narrative structure here is a great way to show her writing skills.
  • Specific examples that show important traits: The applicant clearly communicates both a deep passion for Japanese through examples of her continued engagement with Japanese and her determination and work ethic by highlighting the challenges she’s faced (and overcome) in her study of the language. This gives the impression that she is an engaged and dedicated student.

Overall, this is a very strong statement both in terms of style and content. It flows well, is memorable, and communicates that the applicant would make the most of the graduate school experience.

Sample Personal Statement for Graduate School 2

PDF of Sample Graduate School Personal Statement 2 – Musical Composition

This personal statement for a Music Composition master’s degree discusses the factors that motivate the applicant to pursue graduate study.

Here’s what works well in this statement:

  • The applicant provides two clear reasons motivating the student to pursue graduate study: her experiences with music growing up, and her family’s musical history. She then supports those two reasons with examples and analysis.
  • The description of her ancestors’ engagement with music is very compelling and memorable. The applicant paints her own involvement with music as almost inevitable based on her family’s long history with musical pursuits.
  • The applicant gives thoughtful analysis of the advantages she has been afforded that have allowed her to study music so extensively. We get the sense that she is insightful and empathetic—qualities that would add greatly to any academic community.

This is a strong, serviceable personal statement. And in truth, given that this for a masters in music composition, other elements of the application (like work samples) are probably the most important.  However, here are two small changes I would make to improve it:

  • I would probably to split the massive second paragraph into 2-3 separate paragraphs. I might use one paragraph to orient the reader to the family’s musical history, one paragraph to discuss Giacomo and Antonio, and one paragraph to discuss how the family has influenced the applicant. As it stands, it’s a little unwieldy and the second paragraph doesn’t have a super-clear focus even though it’s all loosely related to the applicant’s family history with music.
  • I would also slightly shorten the anecdote about the applicant’s ancestors and expand more on how this family history has motivated the applicant’s interest in music. In what specific ways has her ancestors’ perseverance inspired her? Did she think about them during hard practice sessions? Is she interested in composing music in a style they might have played? More specific examples here would lend greater depth and clarity to the statement.

  • This statement is clearly organized. Almost every paragraph has a distinct focus and message, and when I move on to a new idea, I move on to a new paragraph with a logical transitions.
  • This statement covers a lot of ground in a pretty short space. I discuss my family history, my goals, my educational background, and my professional background. But because the paragraphs are organized and I use specific examples, it doesn’t feel too vague or scattered.
  • In addition to including information about my personal motivations, like my family, I also include some analysis about tailoring health interventions with my example of the Zande. This is a good way to show off what kinds of insights I might bring to the program based on my academic background.

Grad School Personal Statement Example: Deep Dive

Now let’s do a deep dive, paragraph-by-paragraph, on one of these sample graduate school personal statements. We’ll use my personal statement that I used when I applied to Columbia’s public health program.

Paragraph One: For twenty-three years, my grandmother (a Veterinarian and an Epidemiologist) ran the Communicable Disease Department of a mid-sized urban public health department. The stories of Grandma Betty doggedly tracking down the named sexual partners of the infected are part of our family lore. Grandma Betty would persuade people to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases, encourage safer sexual practices, document the spread of infection and strive to contain and prevent it. Indeed, due to the large gay population in the city where she worked, Grandma Betty was at the forefront of the AIDS crises, and her analysis contributed greatly towards understanding how the disease was contracted and spread. My grandmother has always been a huge inspiration to me, and the reason why a career in public health was always on my radar.

This is an attention-grabbing opening anecdote that avoids most of the usual cliches about childhood dreams and proclivities. This story also subtly shows that I have a sense of public health history, given the significance of the AIDs crisis for public health as a field.

It’s good that I connect this family history to my own interests. However, if I were to revise this paragraph again, I might cut down on some of the detail because when it comes down to it, this story isn’t really about me. It’s important that even (sparingly used) anecdotes about other people ultimately reveal something about you in a personal statement.

Paragraph Two: Recent years have cemented that interest. In January 2012, my parents adopted my little brother Fred from China. Doctors in America subsequently diagnosed Fred with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). My parents were told that if Fred’s condition had been discovered in China, the (very poor) orphanage in which he spent the first 8+ years of his life would have recognized his DMD as a death sentence and denied him sustenance to hasten his demise.

Here’s another compelling anecdote to help explain my interest in public health. This is an appropriately personal detail for a personal statement—it’s a serious thing about my immediate family, but it doesn’t disclose anything that the admissions committee might find concerning or inappropriate.

If I were to take another pass through this paragraph, the main thing I would change is the last phrase. “Denied him sustenance to hasten his demise” is a little flowery. “Denied him food to hasten his death” is actually more powerful because it’s clearer and more direct.

Paragraph Three: It is not right that some people have access to the best doctors and treatment while others have no medical care. I want to pursue an MPH in Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia because studying social factors in health, with a particular focus on socio-health inequities, will prepare me to address these inequities. The interdisciplinary approach of the program appeals to me greatly as I believe interdisciplinary approaches are the most effective way to develop meaningful solutions to complex problems.

In this paragraph I make a neat and clear transition from discussing what sparked my interest in public health and health equity to what I am interested in about Columbia specifically: the interdisciplinary focus of the program, and how that focus will prepare me to solve complex health problems. This paragraph also serves as a good pivot point to start discussing my academic and professional background.

Paragraph Four: My undergraduate education has prepared me well for my chosen career. Understanding the underlying structure of a group’s culture is essential to successfully communicating with the group. In studying folklore and mythology, I’ve learned how to parse the unspoken structures of folk groups, and how those structures can be used to build bridges of understanding. For example, in a culture where most illnesses are believed to be caused by witchcraft, as is the case for the Zande people of central Africa, any successful health intervention or education program would of necessity take into account their very real belief in witchcraft.

In this paragraph, I link my undergraduate education and the skills I learned there to public health. The (very brief) analysis of tailoring health interventions to the Zande is a good way to show insight and show off the competencies I would bring to the program.

Paragraph Five: I now work in the healthcare industry for one of the largest providers of health benefits in the world. In addition to reigniting my passion for data and quantitative analytics, working for this company has immersed me in the business side of healthcare, a critical component of public health.

This brief paragraph highlights my relevant work experience in the healthcare industry. It also allows me to mention my work with data and quantitative analytics, which isn’t necessarily obvious from my academic background, which was primarily based in the social sciences.

Paragraph Six: I intend to pursue a PhD in order to become an expert in how social factors affect health, particularly as related to gender and sexuality. I intend to pursue a certificate in Sexuality, Sexual Health, and Reproduction. Working together with other experts to create effective interventions across cultures and societies, I want to help transform health landscapes both in America and abroad.

This final paragraph is about my future plans and intentions. Unfortunately, it’s a little disjointed, primarily because I discuss goals of pursuing a PhD before I talk about what certificate I want to pursue within the MPH program! Switching those two sentences and discussing my certificate goals within the MPH and then mentioning my PhD plans would make a lot more sense.

I also start two sentences in a row with “I intend,” which is repetitive.

The final sentence is a little bit generic; I might tailor it to specifically discuss a gender and sexual health issue, since that is the primary area of interest I’ve identified.

This was a successful personal statement; I got into (and attended!) the program. It has strong examples, clear organization, and outlines what interests me about the program (its interdisciplinary focus) and what competencies I would bring (a background in cultural analysis and experience with the business side of healthcare). However, a few slight tweaks would elevate this statement to the next level.

Graduate School Personal Statement Examples You Can Find Online

So you need more samples for your personal statement for graduate school? Examples are everywhere on the internet, but they aren’t all of equal quality.

Most of examples are posted as part of writing guides published online by educational institutions. We’ve rounded up some of the best ones here if you are looking for more personal statement examples for graduate school.

Penn State Personal Statement Examples for Graduate School

This selection of ten short personal statements for graduate school and fellowship programs offers an interesting mix of approaches. Some focus more on personal adversity while others focus more closely on professional work within the field.

The writing in some of these statements is a little dry, and most deploy at least a few cliches. However, these are generally strong, serviceable statements that communicate clearly why the student is interested in the field, their skills and competencies, and what about the specific program appeals to them.

Cal State Sample Graduate School Personal Statements

These are good examples of personal statements for graduate school where students deploy lots of very vivid imagery and illustrative anecdotes of life experiences. There are also helpful comments about what works in each of these essays.

However, all of these statements are definitely pushing the boundaries of acceptable length, as all are above 1000 and one is almost 1500 words! Many programs limit you to 500 words; if you don’t have a limit, you should try to keep it to two single-spaced pages at most (which is about 1000 words).

University of Chicago Personal Statement for Graduate School Examples

These examples of successful essays to the University of Chicago law school cover a wide range of life experiences and topics. The writing in all is very vivid, and all communicate clear messages about the students’ strengths and competencies.

Note, however, that these are all essays that specifically worked for University of Chicago law school. That does not mean that they would work everywhere. In fact, one major thing to note is that many of these responses, while well-written and vivid, barely address the students’ interest in law school at all! This is something that might not work well for most graduate programs.

Wheaton College Personal Statement for Graduate School Sample 10

This successful essay for law school from a Wheaton College undergraduate does a great job tracking the student’s interest in the law in a compelling and personal way. Wheaton offers other graduate school personal statement examples, but this one offers the most persuasive case for the students’ competencies. The student accomplishes this by using clear, well-elaborated examples, showing strong and vivid writing, and highlighting positive qualities like an interest in justice and empathy without seeming grandiose or out of touch.

Wheaton College Personal Statement for Graduate School Sample 1

Based on the background information provided at the bottom of the essay, this essay was apparently successful for this applicant. However, I’ve actually included this essay because it demonstrates an extremely risky approach. While this personal statement is strikingly written and the story is very memorable, it could definitely communicate the wrong message to some admissions committees. The student’s decision not to report the drill sergeant may read incredibly poorly to some admissions committees. They may wonder if the student’s failure to report the sergeant’s violence will ultimately expose more soldiers-in-training to the same kinds of abuses. This incident perhaps reads especially poorly in light of the fact that the military has such a notable problem with violence against women being covered up and otherwise mishandled

It’s actually hard to get a complete picture of the student’s true motivations from this essay, and what we have might raise real questions about the student’s character to some admissions committees. This student took a risk and it paid off, but it could have just as easily backfired spectacularly.

The Data Science Statement of Purpose: A Guide with Examples

Data Science Statement of Purpose Guide and Examples

Ready to start writing your Data Science statement of purpose? Well, it’s your lucky day. This article isn’t just a “how to” guide — it’s an object lesson in so many of the common anxieties grad applicants face every year:

  • How do I write about overcoming obstacles (health, low grades, family death) as an undergraduate?
  • How do I describe my career path (I’ve been away from school for awhile)?
  • Should I mention MOOCs in my SOP?
  • Can I get admitted with no research experience?
  • Can I get admitted if I wasn’t a Data Science or CS major in undergrad?

The sample essay you’re about to read and model is a perfect answer to these questions. Why? Because the applicant, despite his circuitous background and previous academic struggles, earned admission to 6 of the best MSDS programs in the US .

To protect the author’s privacy, we won’t name the schools. But rest assured, it’s a “Who’s Who” list of sterling, fancy-pants universities that you’re definitely also considering. Thus, this isn’t just a brilliant data science statement of purpose — it’s a brilliant SOP in general. The author employed this framework successfully for both DS and CS programs, and honestly, ANY applicant in ANY field can use this essay as inspiration…

…and hopefully achieve the same wild success as my fascinating friend, Bennett.

The Student

As an applicant, Bennett ticked a lot of boxes:

  • First-gen college student and child of immigrants;
  • Undergrad Cognitive Science major at elite state university;
  • Modest, less-than-perfect GPA;
  • Multiple DS certifications with supplemental CS coursework (essentially self-taught);
  • Online Executive MBA graduate;
  • 4 years of post-undergrad work experience;
  • Extensive work experience during undergrad;
  • ZERO research experience

Some aspects of Bennett’s profile were fascinating. (He was an NSA analyst in undergrad!) Other parts were fairly normal. (No research, average GPA.)

What then made Bennett and his SOP so special? What made top MSDS programs excited to admit him?

The Structure of a Successful Data Science SOP

It goes without saying that Bennett used the SOP Starter Kit to outline his essay. That means he structured the paragraphs as follows:

  • Introduction Frame Narrative – 1 paragraph (12% of word count)
  • Why This Program – 2 paragraphs (23% of word count)
  • Why I’m Qualified – 4 paragraphs (58% of word count…extremely long, but more on this later)
  • Concluding Frame Narrative – 1 paragraph (7% of word count)

Before we read the actual essay, let’s examine these sections and see how you can mirror Bennett’s example in your own SOP.

1. Introduction Frame Narrative

In the intro, Bennett describes his work as a software engineer. He gets specific. He tells us exactly what he does, and the company he does it for. Most importantly, he describes a moment when he discovered a new intellectual purpose at work:

“Thus, for the first time, I was able to personalize parameters in the pipeline for unaccounted customers. Learning the importance of context for efficient yet equitable automation, I found myself incredibly curious about data-modeling methodologies that can truly represent real-world situations .”

You should do the same as Bennett. Your intro should have some color, some life. It should allow us to see a real human being in there. But it MUST also introduce the sub-niche intellectual problems you hope to tackle in grad school. Chances are, these problems and this sub-niche will define your professional career afterward. They’re the hinge of your whole candidacy.

Common Question #1: “What if I don’t know which sub-niche I want to specialize in?”

Find one. (The SOP Starter Kit has an exercise that will help you figure this out.) Otherwise, you won’t be as competitive as you could be.

Common Question #2: “What if I don’t have an interesting moment (or moments) to write about?”

Stop lying to yourself. No matter where you are, no matter what you’ve done, there was a moment when you decided you needed a graduate degree. There is absolutely a subfield of data science that’s most interesting to you. There are undoubtedly specific applications, in specific industries, you want to work on in the future. How did you discover them?

Bennett wants to study representation of data minorities in ML models for the healthcare industry. That’s the work he wants to do in the future. What kind of work do you want to do in the future? When did you realize this?

That’s the story you tell in your Introduction.

2. Why This Program

Either at the end of your introduction, or in the beginning of this new section, you’re going to include a Sentence of Purpose . It’s a thesis statement for your essay. Bennett’s looks like this:

“Through Gotham University’s Master’s program in Data Science, I hope to further explore how to enhance representation of data minorities in ML models, and thus ensure inclusive healthcare access for the customers I serve.”

The “Why This Program” section of your SOP provides all the evidence for how you’ll pursue this goal in grad school. It should take about 2 paragraphs. Which classes will you take? Which professors do you hope to work with? What will you study in your capstone project?

Let’s make this easy. Just complete the exercise in this article: How to Dominate Your SOP’s Why This Program Section . Trust me, it’s that easy! Then, you’re halfway done with your essay.

3. Why I’m Qualified

This section of your SOP is the easiest to write. It’s your “greatest hits” list – all the proof that you’re a smart student. Everything you write here should support the argument that you’re going to succeed in grad school: your GPA, advanced classes you’ve taken, research experience, etc. It doesn’t have to be long, and shouldn’t include every menial detail of every project you’ve ever done. (That’s what the CV is for .)

Yet, if it shouldn’t be long…why did Bennett write 4 paragraphs?!

Typically, I’d yell and scream at an applicant who spends half the SOP talking about his past credentials. That’s what most applicants do, and why most get rejected .

But Bennett had a unique situation.

His career was wild and fascinating. He’d never formally studied Data Science. He’d even done an MBA. But he had taken lots of MOOCS and online certification courses (seriously, like 10+), he did have amazing experience as a software engineer, and he also had one bad undergrad semester he felt he needed to explain. Thus, he’s a very atypical applicant, and his background required a lot of explaining.

Unless you too have an MBA, 10+ MOOCs, and a completely unrelated major, then I suggest you keep your “Why I’m Qualified” section much shorter – 2 paragraphs is enough.

4. Concluding Frame Narrative

If you have the previous sections in order, this final paragraph should write itself. Make sure to reemphasize the topical problem (your hopeful subfield) from the Intro Frame Narrative. Consider including a career goals statement . But in the end, this section should be easy to write.

That’s it. Four sections, tightly interwoven, all supporting the argument that you are going to be an A+ data science grad student. Now, let’s see how Bennett brought it altogether, so you can attempt to do the same.

A Brilliant Data Science Statement of Purpose

As a software engineer with WayneHealth Group, I maintain data pipelines and batch processing in the modernization team. In 2020, following a health check on existing infrastructure, I discovered that pipelines were delivering data too slowly to clients. After comparing our runtimes to industry standards, I pitched a project using open-source Apache Airflow to help automate pipelines and centralize patient data into a single workflow. However, when considering how to automate 35% of the data, I learned from the billing team how frequently bills are refinanced in our long-term elderly care programs. Thus, for the first time, I was able to personalize parameters in the pipeline for unaccounted customers. Learning the importance of context for efficient yet equitable automation, I found myself incredibly curious about data-modeling methodologies that can truly represent real-world situations.

Through Gotham University’s Master’s program in Data Science, I hope to further explore how to enhance representation of data minorities in ML models, and thus ensure inclusive healthcare access for the customers I serve. Earning my MBA at Metropolis University taught me how to coordinate the need for quantitative reasoning and human intuition through A/B testing, and I believe the MSDS program will build on that foundation. Mathematical Foundations in Computer Science , for example, will help me build real-time analytics dashboards that account for insurance claim data-entry errors through discrete probabilistic models. In the same vein, elective offerings such as Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence will enable me to choose predictive models and evaluate their accuracy when applied to large data sets — particularly useful when predicting whether an insurance claim will necessitate revisions.

Resources like the IGNITE competition will also offer opportunities to collaborate on flexible models that solve real-world situations. Having worked on Apache Airflow implementation in WayneHealth, I understand how collaboration can play a key role in implementing a new idea. Having my IGNITE team’s project evaluated by MSDS professors, with their expertise in modular design and user experience, will only help me evaluate my own performance as I translate my education into functional healthcare applications. Thus, I am certain that Gotham’s MSDS program will prepare me to succeed in a team setting that balances many developer roles, while equipping me to better deliver sales pitches to investors.

Upon graduating, I endeavor to apply my education toward applied healthcare projects that focus on providing easy access to preventative care. Transparency is an integral part of healthcare access because it reduces the expenses and time necessary to find patient care. To help facilitate this transparency, I plan to transition into a Senior Data Scientist role in the Emerging Technologies Collaborative (ETC) at WayneHealth, hopefully working on projects that implement data-driven recommendations for our automated batch processes and servers. When storing vast amounts of patient data across different platforms, vulnerability patches and triage alerts often lead to reactive outcomes that can create downtime for end users. As a result, I seek to implement agentless server monitoring to, first, predict unscheduled outages for our billing and medical coverage systems, and second, recognize patterns in server behavior. Helping recognize outage patterns will not only help me identify problems beforehand, but also decipher the causes of live servers crashing. However, projects outside of WayneHealth excite me as well, including Amgen’s Crystal Bone algorithm which uses AI and machine-learning models to detect bones at risk for osteoporotic fractures. This project was the first tool I have ever seen that uses diagnostic codes sourced from WayneHealth electronic health records, and it inspired me to create my own model using EHR data. In the future, I hope to use EHR diagnostic codes to predict the cost of treatment for those prone to risk, as indicated by the algorithm.

Not only has my position as a software engineer equipped me with strong technical skills, but it has also given me the discipline to continuously learn what I do not yet know. On a project named Karra, an optical-character recognition engine which scans personal information from faxed hospital claim forms, I learned how to develop my own algorithms to calculate the coordinates of form fields to parse data. The technical skills I have gained, in tandem with the unwavering tenacity I developed in this position, will allow me to face any challenge that arises during the MSDS program.

To further prepare for the rigors of the MSDS program, I completed University of Pennsylvania Engineering MOOCs on Coursera, including the Introduction to Python and Java specialization taught by Brandon Krakowsky and the course Computational Thinking for Problem Solving by Susan Davidson. These MOOCs helped me comprehend important programming paradigms such as unit testing and debugging, which will help me test edge cases in MSDS course projects. Also, MOOCs from UC San Diego, such as Python for Data Science and Probability and Statistics in Data Science Using Python , enabled me to optimize data-cleansing techniques for better runtimes. The MCDS program’s Big Data Analytics course will culminate this self-learning effort, providing a solid theoretical understanding of the tools and techniques used to extract insights from large datasets.

While I have taken on a breadth of challenging problems in computer science and implemented solutions at WayneHealth, my prior undergraduate performance did not always reflect my best ability. Between Spring 2016 and Spring 2017, I experienced a personal health challenge that required substantial time away from the UC Coast City campus. I was further distracted by the realities of personally financing my education – working full-time for the National Security Agency (NSA) – while also suffering the loss of a close family member. Even as I struggled I knew the importance of higher education, and, advocating for my own success, I persisted. To strengthen my educational background, I enrolled in online courses and built coping mechanisms, such as managing my time between online courses and on-campus courses efficiently. In the end, these efforts helped me graduate early in the fall of 2018, and I plan to apply the same level of resilience throughout the rest of my academic and professional career.

As I grow increasingly aware of the intersection between ML and social computing, I am determined to study learning techniques such as principal component analysis, and to perform research in data organization/completeness. With my strong self-guided background in applied computer science, and my professional experience with ML and software development in the healthcare insurance industry, the practical knowledge I build at Gotham will help me make voices heard in the data we interact with in our daily lives.

What Makes This SOP Truly Special?

Some might argue that Bennett’s essay doesn’t fit the template described in the SOP Starter Kit. I disagree. The virtuosity of Bennett’s writing shows that the model is adaptable to all kinds of intellectual demands.

(In fact, he’s pointed out himself that the framework helped beautifully with his Computer Science SOPs, which should give confidence to anyone who may be still deciding between DS and CS.)

Personally, I love how Bennett began his Why I’m Qualified section with an expanded Career Goals Statement. It shows us, in painstaking detail, exactly what he’s going to achieve if the school admits him:

“Upon graduating, I endeavor to apply my education toward applied healthcare projects that focus on providing easy access to preventative care.”

There are real data problems in the healthcare insurance industry. Bennett is all-too-familiar with them. Few if any other applicants will ever be able to solve these problems the way he will. We know this because he tells us exactly what he’s going to do in his career afterward :

  • Pursue a Senior Data Scientist role in his company;
  • Automate batch processes and servers to predict unscheduled outages medical coverage systems;
  • And use EHR diagnostic codes to predict treatment costs for high-risk patients.

In this way, Bennett’s expansive, thoughtful SOP makes certain that he isn’t just a boring applicant looking to acquire base knowledge in data science. He already has it! He got it for free from Coursera!

Instead, it shows that he’s deadly focused on his unique sub-niche — solving real data problems in the healthcare insurance industry — and will do everything it takes to succeed. Thus, when Bennett discusses the many obstacles he overcame in the past, we don’t worry about them. We have tremendous confidence in Bennett because he’s already succeeded. He’s already acquired great expertise. And he knows exactly what he needs to do to make an impact in the future.

Though the middle paragraphs are somewhat long, they never feel boring or clunky. They feel intelligent and interesting. Finally, when we get to the last paragraph, we can’t help feeling certain of one thing: “Wow, this guy is unstoppable.”

As you start planning your own data science statement of purpose, there’s one aspect of Bennett’s essay you should mimic. It’s not the MOOCs , his atypical background, or the obstacles he overcame. It’s this:

Bennett mapped out the intellectual problems he wants to study in grad school, and how he will address them pragmatically in his career afterward. It’s not a complex argument:

  • In the last few years, I’ve grown fascinated with Problem X in Industry Z;
  • At Gotham University, I plan to study Problem X in these specific ways;
  • After graduating, I will be able to solve Problem X for companies in Industry Z;
  • I know I’m capable of this because of my skills and record of success;
  • Admission to Gotham is my immediate and necessary next step, so I hope we can begin solving these problems together.

I offer endless gratitude to Bennett for allowing me to share his story, his brilliant essay, and his resounding success. Data Science, Analytics, and Applied Statistics have become insanely competitive. But if you take the time to follow his example, you too can become a champion in the field, and start your journey toward solving unique problems that the world desperately needs you to solve.

Artificial intelligence personal statement example.

Growing up in the golden age of technology, I have witnessed as technological advancements have shaped our lives. From allowing physically challenged people to run, to catalysing medical breakthroughs, and letting people who were born without the ability to hear, listen to "four seasons" by Vivaldi for the first time in their lives. Technology has truly changed what it means to be human.

Even though modern advancements have provided us with the luxury to travel in autonomous vehicles or to produce robots that work for us, today we are faced with one of the biggest challenges of this century. How do we distribute the wealth created by machines? How do we formulate the moral decisions a driverless car might have to resort to?

Scientists, today, are striving to find answers to these questions, and I am not going to stand by and watch from the sidelines. I want to immerse myself in scientific research and help improve the world we live in. To achieve this, I plan to pursue a degree in computer sciences at university.

I have always been fascinated by STEM subjects, as they allow me to understand and explore the workings of our world in greater detail. In A-Level physics, I studied intricate theories and laws of nature; modules related to light were especially fascinating as I learned about the dual-nature of light and the properties that allow it to be used as a medium to transfer data (in Fiber Optics).

While exploring topics related to electricity, I grasped the workings of electrons in transferring current and learned the effects of resistance. In practical component of the subject, I applied my knowledge to maximise the efficiency of various circuits and projects. Computer programming and machine learning are one of the major reasons for my interest in artificial intelligence.

To satiate this interest, I opted for mathematics and additional mathematics subjects. These courses have enabled me to solve and optimise sets of linear equations, an integral part of computer science, and have polished my problem-solving skills.

I can see myself using these concepts to program and design correct algorithms. Moreover, by exploring the statistics vector of the subject, I have developed integral data analysis and reasoning skills and feel confident about transferring my expertise in the subject to future projects.

Outside classroom, various clubs and extra-curricular activities have promoted my holistic growth. Summer internship at Tihami Studios Lahore has helped me enhance my command on Java.

Working with a team, I designed the User Interface of an android game and mapped out its controls. To say that it was an exhilarating experience would be a gross understatement, and to say it only deepened my desire to do more, even more so.

Additionally, I won the prestigious LSU app development competition. For my submission, I developed a virtual choreographer.

The main focus of my project was to find a common ground between music and dance and then use artificial intelligence to mimic the creativity of a real life dancer.

By integrating A.I. with available data of human choreographers, I ensured that the dances produced by the app were not only humanly-possible but also in sync with the beats of the provided audio file.

My school course-work and life experiences have prepared me for research opportunities that I find in the diverse field of computer science.

To delve further into this penchant, I want to study in an environment that is diverse and intellectually challenging. The United Kingdom is at the forefront of academic study and research in the global headquarters of world renowned technological giants.

I believe that a degree from England will arm me with the requisite knowledge, an international network of like-minded people and the exposure to refine my skills to become a future computer scientist.

Guide to Writing Data Science Personal Statements

Table of Contents

A  data science personal statement  is an integral part of the application process for aspiring data scientists. It provides recruiters and admissions board representatives insight into a candidate’s motivations, skills, and abilities related to their chosen field of study.

The statement should demonstrate a clear understanding of the concepts and practices that make up the data science discipline. It showcases an applicant’s technical aptitude and professional experience. A successful personal statement will convey passion for the profession through emotionally resonant language and examples.

Personal statements are everyday encounters in job applications as well as applications to special programs and postgraduate studies.

While personal statements and resumes both demonstrate an applicant’s qualifications, the former does so in paragraph form. This is crucial because it allows applicants a reasonable degree of creativity to create vivid depictions and powerful messages.

This allows them to not only create a good impression on readers but also to evoke emotions.

The Importance of a Personal Statement

The primary function of a personal statement is to give insight into the type of person you are. It provides recruiters and admissions board officers a glimpse into your qualifications .

The actual value of a personal statement lies in its exposition. While resumes and summaries give readers the information they need pertaining to your qualifications, personal statements have a more intimate feel.

They read like stories. They take readers on a journey that helps them fully appreciate an applicant’s skills, experience, and character. Personal statements are particularly beneficial because they encourage recruiters and admissions board members to see candidates as more than just their qualifications. They are a way to show evaluators the person behind the application.

But, as good as all these sound, you can reap these benefits only through a compelling personal statement. If you’re unsure of how to write your data science personal statement, heed the following tips.

Tips for Writing a Data Science Personal Statement

Personal Statement Data Science Examples

Here is a data science personal statement sample for you to review. Go through it carefully to understand how the writer has addressed the aforementioned questions.

Big data is meaningless if it isn’t used in conjunction with experts who can interpret cutting-edge technology into brilliant insights. More businesses are opening their doors to big data as they realise its potential and power as the globe develops swiftly. The basis of this new prospect, mathematics and technology, piqued my curiosity. Since middle school, I have been interested in how mathematics is used in factuality. I was so captivated by the topic’s abstract aspect that I queried my lecturers about its potential application to benefit mankind. I desired to consistently put my understanding and skills to use in real life scenarios.

I have completed my 10th and 12th from xxx School in Kerala. Since I was interested in mathematics and technology, I completed a degree in Computer Science at xxx College in Chennai. My analytical and problem-solving skills evolved as I continued my studies of operational research in college. I believed it was important for the development of model types. Along with mathematics, my involvement in computing started when I built my first C++ programme for my bachelor’s project. My interest was piqued by the backend programming that occurs while using smartphones, sites like Facebook, scanning a code at the shop, or doing online shopping. I was a strong believer in programming’s complex nature and capacity to engage audiences on a worldwide platform.

I questioned whether it was possible to merge my love of mathematics with computer science. The better outcomes that can transform the world of science and technology can be produced by the fusion of these two potent disciplines. My class teacher and I were talking about it, and she gave me a brief introduction to the field of data science. It was exactly what I was looking for because it brought together aspects of statistics, computers, and mathematics. I had my preference for a related field, and it was data science.

I wanted to develop my programming and technical skills once I made the decision to study MS Data Science at XYZ University in the UK. So, using online learning resources like Coursera and NPTEL, I enrolled in a number of courses to acquire Python programming principles, SQL fundamentals, and the Foundations of Data Science.

In addition to my academic activities, I was also paying attention to playing football. I have competed in a lot of provincial and national competitions and received awards. While in high school and college, I was also active in extracurricular and cultural pursuits. I realised from my participation in a variety of programmes that having both hard and soft skills is essential for success in both career and life. To get the desired results, one needs to possess strong organisational, time management, and leadership abilities. I believe my involvement in extracurricular activities enabled me to acquire such skills.

I am planning on joining a reputable company after I finish my master’s degree so I can learn data science first-hand and become an expert. But, in the long term, I hope to establish a business where I can use the knowledge and skills I have gained from all these different disciplines to build sophisticated models. With the aid of one of the industries with the fastest growth rates worldwide, data science, I aim to advance technology and the economy.

Example 2 – Data Science Masters Personal Statement

It used to be a strange term, but as technology developed, the word “data scientist” became more prevalent. The advancement of technology and its evolution generated a demand for specialists who could efficiently manipulate and analyse data. If used properly, this data can guide you in making the best choices possible. This was what my father, a computer science Ph.D. scholar and professor, said to me when I wanted to get admission at your prestigious university to pursue a master’s in Data Science. Thus, I came to understand that data science is a special area of technology that can assist the professional in me achieve great things down the road.

Throughout my undergraduate studies, I learned about the field of data science. When I studied about it more, I began to wonder which industries could make use of data. I am aware of the significant contribution that technology has made to the growth of businesses and the world thanks to my father. My mother, a doctor, also frequently discussed how far the medical industry had come. When I was younger, I would always combine their professions into one. After learning data science, I realised that although I cannot practise medicine, I can significantly advance the field of healthcare through the use of technology and data. In the world of data science, I find that idea fascinating.

I made my decision and then started researching the significance of data in the context of medical science. Hence, I discovered that data science helps with disease diagnosis and medication development. I decided to concentrate my graduation project on the medical industry because of data science’s significance and potential applications in this field. I created a system to aid doctors in locating cancer cells in any area of the body during the clinical assessment of cancer patients. My understanding of data science has expanded due to this endeavour. Knowing that this area of research can save lives in humans astounded me.

I joined many data science-related online courses after realising I lacked the requisite understanding in the discipline. As a result, I learned from the course about key data science stages, such as identifying business problems, analysing data, developing a model, and so forth. I joined Accenture as a data science intern for 4 months after finishing my undergraduate degree. Finding trustworthy sources of data, information gathering, analysing vast amounts of data to uncover insights, developing data analysis techniques, etc. were all under my purview. With the assistance of this internship programme, I was able to improve my abilities and gain more practical knowledge.

Your university’s master’s in Data Science programme combines a focus on applications with a range of research facets. That impressed me a lot. My ability to comprehend, observe, and apply data science concepts will be strengthened by the course’s curriculum. One of the features of your university is the mix of lectures, projects, workshops that combine theory and practise, smaller class sizes, and cutting-edge lab facilities. I can develop the technical, mathematical, and analytical skills necessary to analyse, interpret, and retain enormous amounts of data by taking advantage of the opportunities offered by your knowledgeable faculty. The course also reflects the fact that a combination of technical and management skills are required to enter and advance in the business world. When the programme is over, I am confident that I will be an expert in data science and able to accomplish my goals.

My goal is to establish myself as a data scientist with a concentration on the healthcare industry. I want to create and develop models and systems that would assist the Indian health sector work more effectively and efficiently. My development as a data scientist can be accelerated by gaining knowledge and experience in the industry. I would enjoy a vibrant career that involved assisting medical institutions in making better choices and decisions. I am eager to master the systems, practises, and techniques required for data analysis. My knowledge of advanced statistical and analytical theories are currently limited. My profession will be greatly enhanced by the aforementioned course due to the pertinent information it contains.

I have been a committed learner throughout my career and have concentrated on developing my employability skills to raise my visibility. I can achieve my professional ambitions with a spot at your esteemed university. I want people to be aware of the term “data scientist” and how it can be used to save lives. I want to show the world through my actions that going after unconventional goals is also acceptable.

How to Structure Your Personal Statement?

Your personal statement must have three parts – an introduction, the main body and a conclusion.

Introduction

Write a catchy introduction. The introduction must achieve three goals:

  • It should make the reader want to read your write-up further
  • Give the reader an idea of what you have in store
  • Provide the reader with your background.

Eg: Data has started to define and control our life. When we wake up, the first thing we crave to get hold of is our mobile phone. We go through all social media notifications and emails. The underlying thing of all is data. The AI-enabled social media site stores our browsing history and gives us recommendations. Data will be the backbone of artificial intelligence, the very technology that will rule the world in the future. Reading more about data got me more interested in it. When it came to me to choose a career path, I didn’t have a second thought but to go for data science.

In the above introduction, the writer has

  • Created a curiosity in the reader through the very first two sentences.
  • Addressed the question “How did you get interested in data science?”

The main body consists of multiple paragraphs.

Each paragraph should be dedicated to describing a particular question or point.

For instance, in the first body paragraph, elaborate on your motivation to choose a career path in data science.

In the second, describe how your past academics and professional experiences prepared you towards choosing a definitive career in data science.

The main body should answer questions like:

  • How strongly do you identify with your passion to take up a career in data science?
  • How did your academics and professional experiences shape you?
  • How relevant are your skills and strengths?

The conclusion of your data science personal statement must contain the essence of all points you discussed in the essay.

Also, make sure that:

  • It is capable of convincing the admission committee to take a decision in your favour.
  • Exudes your confidence and hope in getting the admission

Please attach to the application a brief narrative outlining your academic interests. Include any current or long-range interests in research, teaching or other professional objectives. Please describe these if you have progressed far enough in your career to have publications or other evidence of scholarly endeavour.

I want to play the critical role of a business strategist and capitalize on the most useful of the sophisticated technologies flooding modern businesses. In the short run, I want to set up a consulting firm which provides analytics-driven marketing solutions to large firms operating to deliver a consistent and easy buying experience for their customers. I would ideally like to leverage recent shifts in the marketing industry towards data, expand my consulting services across countries, and become a global leader in revolutionizing customer experience through data analytics.

I am an ideal candidate for the Business Analytics program due to my strong academic record as I graduated in Electrical Engineering with a cum laude GPA. My undergraduate has equipped me with extensive quantitative knowledge and technical experience around different themes in engineering. I’ve focused most of my studies on parametric analysis using different software like C++, VB, MySQL, Python and MATLAB. This was further honed when I joined Facebook’s Meta as an Analyst Software Engineer and, using MySQL, predicted patterns of interpersonal behaviour to optimally pair customers with an agent. Solving demand-related issues of customers from all around the globe, I have become aware of the mismatches between marketing outreach and customers’ buying needs. Therefore, I aspire to influence global customers’ marketing experience by investigating ways in which customer needs can be well aligned with the sales strategies of firms supplying goods online.

To materialize my aspirations into a successful reality, I want to glean more information on predicting customer behaviours and matching it with the right promotion offers since it ideally dovetails with my professional expertise in using MySQL to predict patterns of interpersonal behaviour to optimally pair customers with an agent. While I developed a strong skillset in matching commercially available information to determine successful behavioural interaction patterns, I plan to extend my research pursuits by exploring the right mix of traditional and digital marketing vehicles.

Beyond the classroom, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with the influential faculty and the Center and Laboratory for Behavioral Operations and Economics’ endeavours to solve critical IT-related decisions that advance company performance. In particular, the techniques of Professor Gary Bolton in experimenting with real-world trading markets within laboratory settings are foundational for my current work. Moreover, they will equip me with experimenting tools through which I can excel in my future career. Moreover, my future aspirations require strong leadership qualities recognized in a data-driven world. For this purpose, I would greatly benefit from The Leadership Center’s four dynamic offerings to mould my personality into a global leader’s persona.

Lastly, I will exploit the strong placement services and gain access to leading consulting companies where I can seek pro bono consulting opportunities and enhance my problem-solving acumen. I am also confident in acquiring the necessary communication skills to present solutions to Product Managers, Sales Associates, Engineers, and Marketing Teams for effective decision-making.

Thus, to sum up, owing to my strong academic credentials and professional expertise in applying artificial intelligence, I am confident of fully utilizing vibrant opportunities at Master in Business Analytics and converting it into an ideal segue for my future career aspirations.

Introduce yourself to your future classmates in 100 words or less.

I have a passion for entrepreneurship, and during my sophomore year, I laid the foundations of the “ pay as you play”  console gaming platform and earned $4,000 a month. I have strong interpersonal skills and have won five national debating championships and represented at various national and international competitions. I am a fighter and showed great resolve in fighting acute liver failure, which I suffered in my junior year. I am a risk taker and quit my high-paying job at Unilever to start my venture of connecting home-cooked food suppliers with potential buyers.

What professional experiences have made you determine that business school is the right next step? (150 words)

I pitched a business idea named Homestove – a food sharing application based on the B2C model. The business idea was successful as it won a substantial seed funding. Encouraged by its traction, I spearheaded its execution of supplying home-cooked food to potential buyers. However, the main factor I overlooked was doing intensive data analytics based on the market’s demographics. The locus I initially defined was 8 km, which was far from optimal. As a result, it created a mismatch between the area from where demand was being generated and where the chef was supplying the home-cooked food. Consequently, we incurred a considerable loss and customer dissatisfaction because of extended delivery times. Therefore, to avoid such losses, I strongly need a degree based on data management, technology, and analytics to create an ideal operations model for my business.

What career do you plan to pursue after business school and why? (150 words)

In the short run, I would restructure my business model by carefully analyzing the individual-level micro-data. Ideally, I aim to optimize my operations, mitigate the mismatch of distances between chefs and potential buyers, and reclaim the currently lost market share. If successful, I would like to expand my business to other metropolitan cities of US.

In the long run, alongside my business, I would like to provide consulting services to other tech-based startups suffering from a lack of operational optimization of their business. Unfortunately, despite having a lot of potential, most tech-based startups fail because of a lack of proper training in operational research. Consequently, they are unable to sustain themselves and run out of funding. I want to provide such firms consulting based on data analytics, business insights and marketing so they can harness themselves and become profitable.

Is there anything not addressed elsewhere in the application that you would like the Admissions Committee to know about you to evaluate your candidacy? (300-word maximum)

During my senior year, I got recruited by British American Tobacco after winning their battle of mental challenges. They had devised stringent criteria based on a rigorous aptitude test. Additionally, they assigned a group-based project related to any issue in public policy. I was the team lead and submitted a basic blueprint idea for using solar panels for domestic power needs. The basic plan was that the cost of these solar panels, being the main hindrance, would be offset once the government provided low-interest loans to homeowners to power their own houses. The savings on electricity bills would then be used to pay off the loans. It was an innovative idea that was well crafted after hundreds of hours of hard work. For example, my team and I conducted a rigorous field activity and accumulated over 400 bills from different homes in Frederick, Maryland to prove that using solar panels would not cost anything extra to these houses. We won the competition based on our innovative idea, and I was later called for an interview. Later, I was selected as MT and five other candidates out of 7000 applicants. I worked there for two years and eventually moved to Unilever. However, I always wanted to create social value and impact the lives of others, so after a brief stint at Unilever, I started my venture.

Describe a situation in your life where you failed to achieve a goal. What did you learn from this experience? (Max. 400 words)

I pitched a business idea named Homestove – a food sharing application based on the B2C model. The app’s primary purpose was to create local clusters where domestic chefs and homemakers market and sell their food to potential buyers within a particular locus. The business idea was successful as it was selected at top incubators and won a substantial seed funding award. Encouraged by its traction, I spearheaded its execution  to become a pioneer in supplying home-cooked food to potential buyers . The main factor I overlooked was doing intensive market research based on the market’s demographics. Due to a lack of in-depth data analysis, the locus I initially defined was an 8km radius, which was far from optimal. As a result, it created a mismatch between the area from where demand was being generated and where the chef was supplying the home-cooked food. Consequently, we levied a considerable cost of transportation and customer dissatisfaction because of extended delivery timings. The  goal of becoming a pioneer not only failed severely , but the loss’s extent was so much that it even eroded our initial seed funding.

Although I failed in my initial ambition, my failure taught me deep insights into this business. Therefore, I am not let down by this experience. Instead, it has given me a direction leading me to future success. I realize that I conceded this partly because I didn’t discount some factors but, more importantly, because I lacked the necessary skill set. I realized that had I had better analysis skills in synthesizing microeconomic data, I would have developed a better spatial model of the business. I also felt that I needed to hone my skills in optimizing the operations of this business so that the mismatch between consumer and food supplier localities is mitigated.

My more profound understanding of my failure and firm resolve to stand up again only point in one direction. And that is to pursue a Master’s degree in Business Analytics, where I can bolster my quantitative research skills and get international exposure to similar business models. I am therefore confident that a Master’s degree in Business Analytics will go a long way in pursuing my career goals and ambitions.

You just entered the elevator with a member of the Applicant Review Committee for the MS in Business Analytics. You can only speak to this person on the elevator for a short time. What would you say to this individual so that they would look favorably upon your application? (Max. 250 words)

During my senior year, I was inducted as Management Trainee by British American Tobacco after aced their “Battle of Minds” challenge. I was among the top 5 candidates out of other 7,000 aspirants. I worked there for almost two years, and after a very brief stint at Unilever, one of the leading multinationals, I decided to start my business venture. I looked for seed funding programs and pitched them my idea of supplying home-cooked food to potential buyers. The business idea won a substantial seed funding award. The idea was unique and covered on the local news channels during their prime-time transmission. After initial success, I experienced a downturn in my business. I realized the need to hone my quantitative analysis skills, particularly focusing on the operational optimization of business ventures. While searching for programs, I was excited by the curriculum. The vibrant community and home to more than 400 businesses, is an ideal place to learn and build new experiences. Additionally, the business analytics research centre is a perfect platform where I can test new quantitative research methods to calibrate the optimal spatial model of my business. In short, my strong credentials and desire to learn more align with the core values of the program in Business Analytics and will be ideal for fulfilling my career ambitions.

One of our core values is Integrity. What does academic integrity mean to you? (250 words or less)

Academic integrity to me means being honest first and foremost to myself and anyone else. For me, it’s a way of life beyond just being honest in academic writing and following rules and regulations. I have stood up for academic sanctity, even against my friends and peers and have never tolerated slight slip-ups. I clearly remember how I had to take a firm stand against my group fellows in a Finance course when they were inclined to plagiarize a business idea. Additionally, when I started my undergraduate, I had many problems with citing during my writing courses. I wanted to learn and uphold academic integrity, so I took an additional paid online course to understand and master the art of referencing and citations. I have ensured that I take academic integrity beyond my university. As an entrepreneur, I have created a platform where cooks from around the city supply food to various customers. Dealing with almost 40 such cooks, I have ensured everyone is treated equally and honestly. For this purpose, I have developed systems where my employees’ names and background details are encrypted against an identification number so that my judgment remains impartial towards them. These are just some notable instances. Still, throughout my life, I have not let my moral guard down and confidently say that my ethical code of conduct strongly resonated with the core value of integrity.

Describe your experience using Excel, Databases or Software Tools. How has this influenced your decision to pursue a career in analytics? (250 words or less)

During my undergraduate studies, I worked with advanced Excel and basic STATA for various courses involving small and medium datasets. However, I realized a massive handicap of advanced data analytics when I started my business venture. I started a business named Homestove – a food sharing application based on the B2C model. Due to a lack of in-depth data analysis, the locus I initially defined was an 8 km radius, which was far from optimal. As a result, it created a mismatch between the area from where demand was being generated and where the chef was supplying the home-cooked food. I realized that had I had better analysis skills in synthesizing microeconomic data, I would have developed a better spatial model of the business. I also felt that I needed to hone my skills in optimizing the operations of this business so that the mismatch of consumer and food suppliers’ localities is mitigated. My deeper understanding of my failure and firm resolve to stand up again only point in one direction: to pursue a Master’s degree in Business Analytics. Through this, I can bolster my quantitative research skills and get international exposure to similar business models.

What is your target industry post-graduation? What impact do you want to make in your industry using analytics? (250 words or less)

In the short run, I would like to restructure my business model by carefully analyzing the individual data. Ideally, I aim to optimize my operations and mitigate the mismatch of the distance between chefs and potential buyers and reclaim the currently lost market share. If successful, I would like to expand my business to other metropolitan cities. In the long run, alongside my business, I would like to provide consulting services to other tech-based startups suffering from a lack of operational optimization of their business. Unfortunately, despite having a lot of potential, most tech-based startups fail because of a lack of proper training in operational research. As a result, they cannot sustain themselves and run out of funding. I would like to provide such firms with the necessary training based on data analytics, business insights and marketing to harness themselves and become profitable.

Please provide any additional information you would like to bring to the admissions committee’s attention. (250 words or less)

I have a keen sense of developing businesses from simple ideas of human needs. During my sophomore year, I developed a passion for console gaming. However, I soon realized my limited options as each game cost around $50. It was my handicap that I started my first business. I formed a virtual club initially with only 17 of my friends who could play up to 17 other games by only paying an additional fee of $20 per day. By the following year, my club had 123 members across various cohorts. Just by renting the games I bought from the initial deposits; I earned as much as $4,000 per month.

When I joined Unilever, I had many problems having lunch at the office. So, I searched for cooks nearby my office and found a lady who was ready to supply it. Her food was tasty, and soon she had five customers from our office. This gave me an idea to lay down the foundations of Homestore – a food-sharing B2C modelled application. The application’s primary purpose was to create local clusters where domestic chefs and housewives marketed and sold their food to potential buyers within a particular locus. The idea was well received as it won seed funding and got promoted on local news channels’ prime-time transmission. Currently, I am running this business, but I need a data analytics degree to smoothen operations so that I can increase the impact of my venture.

Personal Statement Example: Introduction

“In an era enveloped by modern technology, patterns of consumption and means of payment have changed dramatically and irrevocably. The global development of online shopping and currency digitisation allows us to buy whatever we need whenever we need it. Moreover, we can complete transactions quickly and securely using facial recognition. As a young adult who has been heavily influenced by digital shopping, I became interested in the design and development of shopping software and its corresponding payment technology.

Studying for a BSc in Software Development with a minor in Computer Science at the University of Buckley, learning programming felt like learning to perform magic. I saw how visionary ideas could be realised in computer language, making machines more intelligent and efficient. I am eager to continue exploring the mystery and potential inherent in computer science. I am confident that this master’s in Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Computing at Slater Polytechnic University is the ideal next step to improve my professional knowledge and skills.”

Commentary and Analysis

The opening of this personal statement is engaging, concise and relevant to the course the writer is applying for. It uses informed observations and appropriate terminology and immediately strikes the reader as well-written and academic in tone.

The writer makes a clear link with the value and impact of their undergraduate studies and offers a valid, generalised rationale for studying at the university of their choice.

This introduction has a sense of purpose and relevancy, but it lacks specifics about the technology discussed, which would have added a greater level of legitimacy.

Personal Statement Example: Academic Background

“Throughout my undergraduate studies, I have been proactive in learning systematic computer theory and programming, laying a foundation in mathematics and science, developing the ability to think independently and improving my logical thinking and creative skills.

During this process, I became increasingly fascinated by artificial intelligence. Electing to study an Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course, I explored heuristic search, game playing, machine learning, neural networks and probabilistic reasoning. More importantly, I experimented with applying algorithms and techniques related to AI across a range of specific contexts, allowing problems to be solved and functionality optimised.

During my experiments, I undertook data pre-processing, managing dirty data and normalisation with Weka on the Pima Indian diabetes dataset, which contains 768 instances described by eight numerical attributes. Subsequently, I used Python to implement the K-Nearest Neighbour and Naïve Bayes algorithms to build two classifiers, using some data instances as training data to make diabetes predictions.

Additionally, I implemented 10-fold hierarchical cross-validation to evaluate the performance and accuracy of both classifiers on the same data set. When I ran Decision Tree, Multi-Layer Perceptron, Support Vector Machine and Random Forest with Weka to calculate accuracy and compare, I found that different algorithms showed conflicting results in different contexts.

To improve the accuracy of my prediction, I performed Correlation-based Feature Selection on the data, effectively removing the influence of irrelevant factors. Successfully completing this project, I developed a better understanding of the principles and potential of machine learning and enhanced my practical and analytical skills. I believe this experience has prepared me well for graduate study.”

Commentary and Analysis

The first paragraph above is outstanding in terms of claims but is descriptive without giving evidential examples, which would have added much more depth. However, the second paragraph does show evidence of relevant prior knowledge, showing an impressive depth of terminology, relevance and expertise, which would impress an admissions reader. The writer also links their prior learning to the master’s course they are applying for, which is essential.

The technical aspects of the second half of this section are even more impressive, as the vocabulary is used expertly and expressed logically. There is a clear link between the writer’s knowledge depth and the course demands, although more specific connections could have been drawn. The last two sentences are not specific enough in terms of a direct link with course modules.

Personal Statement Example: Practical Experience 1

“In addition to my active academic engagement and exploration, I also have a wealth of relevant internship and practical experience. During my exchange program at Marshall University, I deepened my understanding and application of data mining by pre-processing, visualising and analysing data on China’s demographic change and urban-rural distribution and regression prediction. During my internship at Pounce Artificial Intelligence Technology Co Ltd, I interacted with the algorithmic models of facial expression recognition and sentiment analysis.

As a result, clients from diverse backgrounds and age groups, such as university students and older people in nursing homes, can receive accurate sentiment analysis reports and suggestions for improvement after using our products for human-computer interaction. I now have a compelling clarity of vision for the future application of this technology in medical treatment, in monitoring patients’ emotions and generating new opportunities for well-being and positive mental health.”

The elements referred to here link directly with the content offered by the course, so the writer has succeeded in evidencing their suitability in practical terms. However, there’s very little direct relevance to particular units or modules, which would have strengthened the content.

The second half of this section goes a little off-topic. Although it shows the application of the internship work, we lose a sense of relevancy. However, the writer rescues this to a degree by linking this passage with their ambitions.

Check out lots more examples of personal statements here , and see how they can inspire your application!

Personal Statement Example: Practical Experience 2

“Subsequently, I joined Fourth Sky Network Technology Co Ltd as an intern. In developing the business requirements for portraits, I took the initiative and taught myself Python Spider, parsing the Baidu Tieba and Douban websites to obtain nearly 1,000 pieces of avatar data. I also compared the Baidu image recognition function when implementing the image recommendation function.

The obvious difference in results piqued my interest in exploring graph recognition technology within the sphere of artificial intelligence. The skills I acquired deepened my understanding of algorithmic models, data analysis and machine learning, shaping the direction of my choice of both my master’s study and career ambitions.”

Commentary and Analysis:

This more relevant and dynamic section builds on the previous one but offers evidence of skills and experiences more tangibly. The connection between the writer’s practical skills and further academic ambitions is of the most value, made in the second paragraph. Admissions readers like to see a correlation between an applicant’s goals and the course offer, and this passage achieves this successfully.

Again, a substantial range of relevant vocabulary is used, showing a suitable academic level for postgraduate study.

The one thing that all successful personal statements have in common is that they are concise, engaging and accurate in spelling, punctuation and grammar. Consequently, I always recommend Grammarly to my students and clients.

Personal Statement Example: Conclusion

“Artificial intelligence has already had some disruptive effects on human life and is bound to make positive and currently unforeseen leaps forward in the future. Consequently, I believe that Slater Polytechnic University offers the most suitable program for the next phase of my academic study and personal development. I look forward to learning how to apply and design more complex applications, analyse data using cutting-edge statistical techniques and gain greater machine learning knowledge.

I also aim to extend my professional skills by studying Natural Language Processing and Speech and Image Recognition as my elective courses. I am passionate about collaborating with others and am keen to meet and learn from a group of like-minded peers.

A motivated student, I am eager to use my undergraduate knowledge and industry experience to focus on language analysis and action recognition in artificial intelligence. Ultimately, I hope to realise intelligent furniture and create products that offer all a convenient life. I look forward to playing a creative and dynamic role as a valued member of your faculty and taking my place in the next generation of AI and big data breakthroughs.”

The first part of this conclusion is far too generic. Without any real clarity of example, the writer makes broad observations that lack depth. What disruptive effects? What are the projects or individuals at the forefront of this industry? Indeed, throughout this personal statement, there is very little evidence of academic reading or research and no formal quotes or references, which weakens the application.

Wanting to offer everyone a ‘convenient life’ is far too generalised. It wastes the opportunity to identify specific organisations or practitioners within the industry that the writer might aspire to work with.

Equally, there is no information regarding specific research projects, professors or alums that the writer particularly wants to engage with. Consequently, there isn’t a compelling reason why the candidate has chosen this particular university.

Last, the writer hasn’t indicated what value they might bring to the faculty. The last paragraph should always outline the potential contributions of the applicant to the university community, showing the added qualities they will bring.

Data-Science-SOP-Sample-and-Format

Do you want to study data science at one of the world’s best universities? One of the most significant parts of preparing for an overseas degree is writing a Statement of Purpose for a Master’s in Data Science. The admissions committee will use the data science personal statement or sop as one of the primary factors while considering your candidature for their elite premises. However, you need not worry, as this article will provide you with comprehensive assistance on how to craft an impressive data science SOP that will help you get admission.

Table of Contents

Whether you are applying to the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, or other nations, this article mentions the best guidelines for SOP. Using the provided SOP structure, suggestions, and sample SOP for MS in Data Science , you may get started writing your own. Instead of using the professional SOP example word-for-word, use it as a reference to craft your own SOP that is tailored to your specific goals and purposes.

Let’s start with the basics of a statement of purpose for data science and why you would want to spend time writing one as part of your academic application.

What is a Statement of Purpose?

Statements of Purpose (SOPs) are similar to essays in structure and content. This essay is essential in helping the student articulate their goals and drive. The administration will review this essay that should explain why you desire this specific degree and what you plan to achieve with it. Students applying to college are expected to write a personal statement demonstrating their ability to think critically and write creatively. The admissions officers who read your essay will get their first impression of you, so make it count. The SOP for data analytics needs to reflect the specifics of the course. Reading over several examples of SOPs before trying to construct your own is a good idea, as is writing it out and then revising it at least twice. Write a draft SOP for MS in Data Science, bearing all the above in mind before writing the final document to see whether it is worth it.

Decoding Your Data Science SOP Structure

Decoding-Your-Data-Science-SOP

An SOP for a Master’s degree is challenging in any discipline. When writing an SOP, you may wonder what information is necessary and what may be left out. But there’s no need to fret; we’ve got your back.

Professional considerations to keep in mind while you compile your SOP

  • Your SOP for data science should define a picture of you for the selection committee; therefore, it should highlight your most vital points and demonstrate why you are the right candidate for this programme.
  • The reasons you’ve decided to take this class might be the subject of a reflective essay. It might be an experience, an event, or anything else you have to share that is really remarkable and will leave an impression on the reader. This is crucial in order to write an SOP that will set you apart from the competition.
  • It goes without saying that colleges prefer applicants with the background and ability to succeed in graduate-level research. You should thus demonstrate your research skills in your SOP. You may back this claim up by discussing relevant job experience, academic and professional initiatives, groups you have worked in, and titles you have had.
  • It is essential to tailor your SOP to the programme you are applying to by including the details that will help you stand out. For example, if you’re applying for a master’s degree in data science, your statement of purpose (SOP) might highlight your employment as a data analyst, undergraduate research, and thesis, among other relevant experiences.
  • If you are changing majors for your master’s, you should elaborate on why you believe this is the best next step in your academic career and how your prior studies and work experience have prepared you well for graduate work in this new subject. To add weight to your argument, describe projects in which you used data science principles.
  • Finally, highlight your extracurricular achievements, national and international accolades, and unique skills.

Data Science Course SOP Structure

Data-Science-SOP

You must ensure that your SOP for masters in data science is formatted consistently. In addition, your statement of purpose should be well organised to effectively use the word count while still reading smoothly and holding the reader’s interest.

The following are some tips to keep in mind when you organise and structure your SOP:

  • Avoid using unnecessarily big or tiny fonts that are difficult to read in your SOP. Instead, use Times New Roman for your statement of purpose unless otherwise instructed.
  • Start your SOP with a quotation that sets the tone or discusses some of the ideas you want to cover. Research thoroughly, and choose a quote from a well-known philosopher, scientist, or other authority figure in your subject. You can also take advice from professional SOP writers to perfectly frame your story.
  • First, introduce yourself and the programme to which you’re applying. Then, at the end of the first paragraph, provide a brief overview of the information you want to cover in the next paragraphs.
  • Tell the admission committee your story in the second paragraph. Share your thoughts on what prompted you to get a degree in data science and what excites you most about working in this profession.
  • In the third paragraph, explain why you think this institution is the best fit for you to study Data Science based on your career and academic background. Discuss your employment history, educational experience, and notable accomplishments.
  • In the next paragraph, explain why you feel enrollment at the specified educational institution is the next logical step in your academic career. In this section, you’ll want to address some of the most crucial questions the institution could have about you and your SOP.
  • Do your homework before applying to a course. Identify the professors whose research you are interested in studying and for whom you understand their work. Remember to stress the institution’s illustrious past and strong standing in your application materials. However, be careful to stay moderate since this might have a bad effect on your SOP.
  • Last but not least, you should discuss your plans after graduating from this specific institution in your SOP’s last paragraph.

Assuming no further restrictions are placed on the length of your statement of purpose for data science , you should keep it around 1000 words or 500 words as suggested in university guidelines.

BSc Economics, Finance and Data Science: writing a UCAS personal statement to impress

Smiling student interacting with a friend

We are excited that you are considering applying for our new BSc Economics, Finance and Data Science course at Imperial College Business School. One of the things you will be wondering about is how to show your enthusiasm and suitability for the degree in your UCAS personal statement. In this blog, I will provide some pointers and, hopefully, reassurance.

The challenge

Let us start with the big challenge you face. You need to write one personal statement, when you are applying to up to five courses, potentially across five universities. We know that it is highly unlikely that all the options on your personal statement will be economics + finance + data science. We are not looking for students who specifically say they are only interested in studying a course with this combination of subjects, although an interest in this combination would be nice!

Hopefully, this will reassure those wondering how to write a statement that is relevant for multiple courses with different combinations of economics, finance, data science, philosophy, politics, business studies, geography, maths, computer science, and many other subjects. Of course, it is best not to signal that you are only interested in studying politics, philosophy and economics or pure maths or that you dream of studying at a particular institution or in a specific city.

We are looking for applicants who have a strong preference to study our degree, but we understand you may need to be nuanced in how you present your interest.

What we are looking for

We will be assessing your application (grade predictions; past grades; reference letter; and personal statement) in the round. There are six things that we are looking for from potential students . They are:

  • Bright with strong academic achievements
  • Excited by, and have strong potential for, analytical problem solving
  • Curious to use economics and/or finance to explore evolving challenges in commercial, policy or third sector contexts
  • Passionate to learn how to use data analysis and cutting-edge technique to examine economics and/or finance questions
  • A motivated and engaged learner who works well independently and with others, with strong communication skills

Your job is to convince us that you have evidence that you meet these criteria. This is where you get to tell your story in a way that works for your application.

How to tell your story

Try to go beyond your grades, show your curiosity and let us know what makes you stand out from an academic perspective.

There are a multitude of ways to evidence your curiosity about the different subjects in our degrees, including but not limited to:

  • Subjects chosen at school
  • Projects that you have worked on
  • Talks that you have attended or listened to online
  • Books you have read
  • Ideas you have had about the relevance of these subjects to business and policy

Again, just to reassure, you can demonstrate your curiosity about all three areas, but convincing evidence of curiosity about just one of the areas or any combination of the three will also be well regarded.

It is also worth emphasising that we do not expect you to have studied the subjects before the course . Our requirement is that you come with strong mathematical skills which will put you in a strong position to learn economics, finance, and data science to a high level in the degree.

An effective way to show us you are suitable for the BSc Economics, Finance and Data Science is to hone in on the areas that are common across our course modules : strong quantitative skills and the ability to use those skills to analyse and solve problems.

Applicants who love to work on a new challenge or situation and who use quantitative techniques to find relevant solutions are what we are looking for. This can be demonstrated, for example, through your choice of academic subjects in school, participation in extra-curricular activities and competitions or a story that explains how you solved a new problem in your life. Evidence of you learning how to use technology to support your problem solving is also a nice touch!

You will have your own way of showing us that you are motivated, using examples of times when you were driven to succeed . Similarly, personal stories that show your ability to develop your learning skills (‘learn how to learn’), working independently and with others, will be important. This will help us see that you are likely to succeed in our course, given the need to take ownership of your learning, work independently and engage with group work during your three years.

Our final criterion is communication. How you write the statement will tell us a lot. You can also provide wider evidence of your skills in delivering presentations, writing diverse types of outputs, and listening to others.

Every applicant is unique, and we encourage you to show us what makes you a strong candidate in your personal statement . Of course, if you are invited to interview, we will want to explore your motivation to study the three subject areas together and will dig deeper into how you match what we are looking for.

I hope this helps you shape your statement and wish you well in preparing your application!

Personal Mission Statement Examples

Title: Building Bridges with Words

My mission is to build bridges—not of steel or stone, but of words, ideas, and connections that bring people together in meaningful ways. I believe that every conversation, every piece of writing, and every interaction is an opportunity to create understanding where there was once division, to spark curiosity where there was once indifference.

From a young age, I've been captivated by the power of language. I saw how a well-crafted sentence could change a mind, how a simple word of encouragement could lift someone's spirit. But I also witnessed how words could be used to hurt, to divide, and to isolate. This duality fueled my desire to harness language for good, to use it as a tool for connection rather than a weapon for division.

In my work, I strive to be a connector—a person who can bring diverse perspectives together, who can translate complex ideas into accessible concepts, and who can find common ground even in the most polarized conversations. I see every challenge as an opportunity to build another bridge, to link people across cultural, ideological, or experiential divides.

My mission extends beyond my professional life. In my personal interactions, I aim to listen deeply, to speak thoughtfully, and to approach every conversation with empathy and openness. I believe that by understanding others, we can better understand ourselves and the world around us.

I am committed to lifelong learning, recognizing that each day brings new opportunities to grow, to learn, and to build more bridges. My mission is not just to achieve personal success but to create a legacy of connection, where the words I choose and the actions I take bring people closer together, fostering a world where understanding, compassion, and unity are the foundation of every bridge we build.

Law School Personal Statement Examples

Title: A Passion for Justice: My Journey to Law School

Growing up in a small town where the law was often seen as distant and impersonal, I witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of legal injustices. My grandmother, a hardworking immigrant, faced years of discrimination and exploitation in her workplace. Despite her tireless efforts, she was unable to find justice through the legal system. It was this experience that ignited my passion for law and my determination to become a force for positive change.

During my undergraduate studies, I delved deep into legal theory and history, exploring the ways in which the law has been used to uphold and challenge social hierarchies. I was particularly drawn to the intersection of law and social justice, recognizing the power of the legal system to address systemic inequalities.

One summer, I had the opportunity to intern at a public interest law firm specializing in immigration law. There, I worked closely with clients who faced deportation and separation from their families. I learned the immense stress and uncertainty that these individuals endured, and I witnessed the transformative impact that legal representation could have on their lives.

Through my experiences, I have developed a strong commitment to using the law as a tool for social justice. I believe that lawyers have a unique responsibility to advocate for the marginalized and to challenge unjust systems. I am eager to pursue a legal career that will allow me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

I am confident that my academic background, combined with my personal experiences, has prepared me to excel in law school. I am eager to contribute to a diverse and intellectually stimulating learning environment, and I am committed to using my legal education to create a more just and equitable society.

Medical School Personal Statement Examples

If you're seeking exceptional med school personal statement examples, the following template can serve as a valuable starting point.

Title: A Needle's Purpose

The sting of the hypodermic needle, a sensation I've come to know intimately. Not as a patient, but as a volunteer at the local clinic. It's a sensation that simultaneously elicits a pang of fear and a surge of purpose. I recall a particular afternoon when a young boy, no older than ten, was brought in with a severe asthma attack. His wheezing was labored, his eyes wide with terror. As the attending physician administered a nebulizer treatment, I watched, my heart pounding in my chest. When the boy's breathing finally steadied, a sense of relief washed over me. In that moment, I knew that medicine was my calling.

Beyond the clinical setting, I've also had the opportunity to explore the intersection of healthcare and public policy. As a research assistant on a project studying the impact of healthcare reform in my region, I gained a deeper understanding of the systemic challenges facing our healthcare system. This experience has fueled my desire to become a physician who is not only skilled in patient care but also committed to advocating for equitable access to healthcare for all.

My experiences have taught me that medicine is more than just treating diseases; it's about caring for individuals and communities. I am drawn to the challenge of applying my scientific knowledge and clinical skills to improve the lives of others. I am eager to contribute to the medical field and to make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of my patients.

If this template hits the right note, our medical school personal statement editing services are ready to fine-tune it for you!

Personal Statement for Graduate School Examples

Title: From Failure to Fuel

"Failure is not the opposite of success; it's the catalyst that has driven my most significant achievements."

As a psychology undergraduate, I faced a daunting challenge: a research project that yielded unexpected, disappointing results. Initially, I viewed this outcome as a failure, a blemish on my academic record. However, through reflection and guidance from my mentor, I realized that the very unpredictability of research is its greatest strength. This experience sparked an intense curiosity in me, leading to a deeper understanding of the complexities of human behavior and the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.

Rather than shying away from this challenge, I embraced it, using the opportunity to develop a more nuanced approach to research. I delved into advanced statistical methods and honed my ability to think critically about data that didn't conform to expectations. This experience taught me that research is not about finding easy answers but about asking better questions, even when the answers are elusive.

This perspective has shaped my academic journey and fuels my desire to pursue graduate studies. I see my perceived weakness—initially feeling overwhelmed by unexpected results—as a critical strength. It has made me more adaptable, resourceful, and committed to pushing the boundaries of knowledge.

I am eager to bring this mindset to your graduate program, where I can contribute to and learn from a community of scholars who share my passion for psychology. My journey has been defined not by easy successes but by the challenges I've embraced and the growth they've spurred. I am ready to take the next step, confident that my ability to turn setbacks into opportunities will serve me well in the rigorous, rewarding environment of graduate study.

If one of these templates catches your eye, feel free to buy a personal statement that's made-to-measure just for you!

Personal Vision Statement Examples

Title: In the Space Between Notes

My life's symphony is composed in the spaces between the notes. In music, the rests are as crucial as the melody, defining the rhythm, the pace, and the emotional impact of the piece. I see my life's journey much the same way—not just in the actions I take, but in the pauses, the reflections, and the moments of stillness that allow me to hear the music more clearly.

In the past, I used to focus solely on the crescendo—the big achievements, the high points. I believed that life was a series of grand performances where only the loudest, most spectacular notes mattered. But as I grew, I began to understand that the true beauty of a symphony lies in its balance, in the harmony between sound and silence.

I envision my future as one where I create not just a career, but a life that resonates with this balance. My goal is to become a leader in my field, not by rushing from one achievement to the next, but by being thoughtful in my actions, intentional in my decisions, and open to the unexpected melodies that life offers. I want to lead with empathy, understanding that the quiet moments often speak the loudest, that listening is as powerful as speaking.

In my personal life, I aspire to cultivate deep, meaningful relationships, to be present in the moments that matter most, and to find joy in the simple, unplanned interludes. I seek to live with purpose, but also with grace, allowing myself the freedom to pause, to reflect, and to adapt as the music of my life changes.

Ultimately, my vision is to compose a life that is rich with meaning, where every note and every rest contributes to a harmonious whole. I aim to create a legacy that isn't just remembered for its achievements, but for the way it moved others, for the way it lingered in the spaces between.

Personal Statement Examples for College

The below narrative is one of our unique college personal statement examples you can use as inspiration.

Title: The Art of Folding Paper

I learned more about life from a sheet of paper than from any textbook. My fascination with origami started as a simple hobby, a way to pass the time on rainy afternoons. But as I folded my first crane, I realized I was doing more than just creating art; I was practicing patience, precision, and perseverance.

Origami is deceptively complex. A single wrong fold can distort the entire figure, but with each mistake, I discovered something new. I learned that a wrong fold doesn't mean the end—it's an opportunity to start again, to reshape the paper, and, often, to create something entirely unexpected and beautiful.

In high school, I brought my love for origami into the classroom, using it to explain complex concepts in physics and geometry to my classmates. A paper crane became a lesson in symmetry, a folded frog, an exploration of potential and kinetic energy. I even started an origami club, where we explored the intersection of art and science, creativity and logic. What began as a solitary pursuit transformed into a way to connect with others, to share ideas, and to look at problems from different angles.

Outside of school, origami helped me navigate the challenges of adolescence. When my parents divorced, folding paper became my refuge, a way to process emotions that words couldn't capture. Each fold was a step toward understanding, each completed figure a small triumph of order over chaos. It taught me that even in the most complicated situations, there's a way to create something meaningful if you're willing to keep folding, keep trying.

Now, as I look ahead to college, I see it as a blank sheet of paper—full of possibilities, ready to be shaped by the choices I make and the experiences I seek. I'm eager to bring my passion for both the arts and sciences to your campus, to fold my love for learning into every aspect of my education. Just as I've done with origami, I plan to explore the unexpected intersections, to create something unique and intricate from every opportunity.

In the end, a piece of paper, like life, can be anything you want it to be. It's all in how you fold it.

Residency Personal Statement Examples

Title: The Night I Decided to Stay

Residency wasn't always in the plan. In fact, the night I decided to stay in medicine, I had my resignation letter drafted. I was a third-year medical student, standing alone in a dimly lit hospital hallway, utterly drained from another 30-hour shift. The endless rotations had blurred into a monotonous routine of rounds, notes, and more rounds, and I began to question whether this was truly the life I wanted.

That night, I was assigned to the emergency department, where I met Mrs. Greene, a 67-year-old woman with a history of heart disease. She had collapsed at home and was brought in by ambulance, unconscious and unresponsive. Her family was frantic, desperate for answers I didn't have. As I followed my attending into the room, I felt a wave of anxiety. This wasn't a textbook case; it was a real person whose life hung in the balance.

The resuscitation was intense. I was there, chest compressions, adrenaline injections, the relentless rhythm of the defibrillator. As the team worked, I could see the fear in her daughter's eyes, and it struck me that this was about more than just a medical emergency. This was about a family in crisis, a life teetering on the edge.

After what felt like an eternity, Mrs. Greene's pulse returned. The attending physician calmly directed the team, and we stabilized her enough to move her to the ICU. As we wheeled her away, her daughter grabbed my hand and whispered, "Thank you." It was a simple phrase, but it cut through my exhaustion, through the doubts and the fatigue.

I didn't leave the hospital that night. Instead, I sat down with my resignation letter, re-read it, and then ripped it up. I realized that medicine wasn't just about the science or the protocols—it was about moments like this, moments when you're not just treating a condition, but caring for a person, when your presence and perseverance can mean the difference between despair and hope.

Residency will be grueling, I know that. But I also know that it's where I'm meant to be. The night I decided to stay was the night I realized that medicine isn't just a career; it's a calling. And I'm ready to answer it.

Common App Personal Statement Examples

Title: The Day I Became an Engineer

I became an engineer on a blistering summer afternoon, though I didn't know it at the time. I was eight years old, crouched over the engine of my father's old Ford truck, hands smeared with grease, staring intently at a mess of wires and bolts. The truck had died in the middle of nowhere, miles from home, and with no mechanic in sight, my father turned to me and said, "Let's figure this out."

There was no manual, no diagram, just a young girl and her father armed with determination and a rusty toolbox. The heat was relentless, but I was captivated. Together, we deciphered the puzzle of the engine, tracing wires, testing connections, and slowly piecing together how the machine worked. After hours of trial and error, a spark of understanding ignited within me. When the engine finally roared to life, I felt a surge of pride that was as much about solving the problem as it was about discovering my own potential.

That moment in the desert wasn't just about fixing a truck; it was the first time I understood the power of curiosity and persistence. The feeling of triumph in the face of uncertainty stayed with me, and it became a defining aspect of who I am. It's what led me to join the robotics team in high school, where I spent countless nights debugging code and reassembling circuits, chasing that same spark of understanding.

But engineering, I've come to realize, isn't just about building machines. It's about constructing solutions, piece by piece, for problems that seem unsolvable. Whether I'm designing a new prototype or figuring out how to balance equations in physics, I approach each challenge with the same mindset I had as that eight-year-old in the desert: Let's figure this out.

I'm applying to college not just to learn, but to continue building—ideas, innovations, and a future where no problem is too complex to tackle. I've been an engineer at heart since that sweltering afternoon, and I'm ready to take the next step, not with all the answers, but with the confidence that I can figure them out.

Personal Statement for University Examples

Title: Designing the In-Between

"I've always been fascinated by the spaces between—those fleeting moments when science meets art, where precision meets creativity."

Growing up, I was equally enthralled by the elegance of mathematical equations and the expressive power of a blank canvas. While most saw these as distinct, even opposing interests, I found a profound connection between them. Mathematics, with its rigid structure and logic, offered me a way to understand the world's complexities. Art, on the other hand, gave me the freedom to express the nuances that numbers alone couldn't capture.

In high school, this dual passion led me to an unlikely pairing: architecture. It was in drafting rooms and design studios that I discovered my true calling. Here, the geometric precision of calculus met the boundless creativity of artistic vision, and I found a space where I could truly thrive. Designing structures that were not only functional but also aesthetically compelling was more than a challenge; it was a thrilling pursuit that combined everything I loved.

My projects, often inspired by natural forms and abstract patterns, have taught me to see beyond the obvious, to push boundaries and explore unconventional solutions. In one project, I designed a library that mimicked the flow of water, using mathematical principles to create a space that was both serene and dynamic. This project was a turning point for me, solidifying my belief that the most innovative designs emerge when you allow different disciplines to inform each other.

I believe that the future of design lies in the spaces between—where art and science, creativity and precision, meet. I am ready to contribute my unique perspective and learn from a community that values innovation as much as I do. This program is not just a step in my academic journey; it's the place where I can turn my vision into reality.

Personal Statement for Scholarship Examples

Title: Language as a Bridge

As a child, I watched my parents meticulously fill in forms in a language they barely understood. They had immigrated to this country with dreams of a better life but lacked the resources to fully grasp the complexities of their new world. This experience ignited in me a passion for language—not just as a means of communication, but as a bridge to opportunity.

I began tutoring English as a second language in high school, working with students from diverse backgrounds who, like my parents, struggled with the nuances of a new language. Each session was more than just a lesson; it was an opportunity to empower someone else with the tools they needed to navigate and thrive in society. Through this work, I realized that language is power, and education is the key to unlocking it.

This passion for language led me to pursue a degree in linguistics, where I explored the intricacies of phonetics, syntax, and semantics. I became fascinated by the ways in which language shapes our perceptions and interactions. But I didn't stop at theory—I sought to apply my knowledge practically, volunteering in legal clinics to assist non-English-speaking immigrants with their cases. I translated, I advocated, and most importantly, I listened.

The scholarship I am applying for will enable me to continue this work, allowing me to pursue a graduate degree focused on language acquisition and policy. With this education, I plan to develop programs that not only teach language but also empower individuals to use their voices for change.

My journey has taught me that a blank page is not to be feared—it is a chance to create something meaningful. I am determined to turn every challenge into an opportunity for growth, not just for myself, but for those I am committed to helping. This scholarship would be the next step in my mission to ensure that language is a gateway, not a barrier, to a better life.
