K-Pop Singer LISA of BLACKPINK, Full of Confidence, Talks About Embracing Her Identity as “LALISA” and Her Thai Heritage on Her First Solo Single

Lisa is not only the most popular k-pop star on instagram (with 61.9 million followers) but a brand ambassador for some of the world’s biggest fashion houses. she talks to the post about her debut solo single lalisa, the message she hopes fans will take away from hearing it and what she would say to her younger self..

“From Thailand to Korea, and now here, went for the throat/Being the greatest of all time ain’t fantasy,” sings Lisa of Blackpink on her first solo single, Lalisa.

Lalisa Manobal, better known as Lisa, is one of the world’s biggest Asian stars, and she hypes herself up as such on the hip-hop-fuelled dance track and its B-side, Money – released together as a single album.

“I have been preparing for a long time,” she tells the Post. “I couldn’t believe it at first. I kept thinking, ‘Is this real?’ I think it hit me more when I started filming the music video.”

Lisa, a member of one of K-pop’s biggest acts, Blackpink, has become not only the most popular K-pop star on Instagram (with 61.9 million followers) but a brand ambassador for some of the world’s biggest fashion houses, including Celine and Bulgari.

Her debut on September 10 came soon after the band’s fifth anniversary in August. Both as a quartet and as individuals (Jennie and Rosé have also released solo music and, along with Jisoo, have well over 45 million Instagram followers each), the women of Blackpink are some of the most prominent Gen Z pop stars and fashion icons in the world.

While Jennie’s Solo was a declaration of independence and Rosé’s On the Ground a show of creative ambition, Lisa’s Lalisa is a brashly confident self-love anthem. Her sleek braggadocio blends with her spitfire vocals and endearing charm as she takes centre stage as a charismatic pop star.

“I’m incomparable, you gon’ still love me nonetheless,” she sings, lacing the lyrics with references to Blackpink’s success. The chorus is the stand-out, calling forth the attention she gets from fans: “Say, ‘Lalisa, love me, Lalisa, love me’/Call me, ‘Lalisa, love me, Lalisa, love me’.”

“I was really happy when I saw the other members’ preparing for their solo projects and now they congratulate me so much,” says Lisa. “Jennie and Rosé [each] did a really good job on their solo albums, so now it is my turn to take that energy and show mine to the fullest. Because I had to fill the album with my voice only, my first goal was to show my own colour, uniqueness.

“It is an album that I worked on thinking of the fans who always have been believing and supporting Blackpink,” she says. “Lalisa is full of confidence. This is not only my album concept, but also a message that I want my fans to take away by listening to it. I hope we all love ourselves and be happy.”

The music video for Lalisa shows all the sides of the singer that fans have come to know and love, from a tweedy, urbanite-meets-girl-next-door moment to scenes where she is pole dancing and dirt biking with her crew.

Then Lalisa comes to a segment that breaks up the song, where – sat on a golden throne – she wears a golden outfit by Thai designer Asava and a multi-tiered headdress known as a mongkut.

In a connected dance break, she and her team of dancers perform on a Thai temple-inspired set and evoke classical Buddhist-inspired Thai dance moves, such as the hypnotic thousand hands dance, in a celebration of all things Lalisa. “I’m confident standing above the sky,” Lisa proclaims.

Lisa’s well-loved onstage confidence contrasts with her softer side and the sentimentality she drew on to incorporate her Thai roots in the music video.

This aspect of Lisa was on full display in Blackpink’s recent anniversary documentary film, Blackpink: The Movie. In one scene, she’s brought to tears as she recalls how far she has come to get where she is – how she was a “little woman” who dreamed big and now has received all this love.

“I thought I was a really small person compared to the love that the fans gave me,” she says, reflecting on the comment in the movie.

It’s hard to believe these two characters – one crying as she thinks of her supporters and the other, on a throne, demanding the love she deserves – are the same person. However, it fits with what Blackpink stands for: the duality of a modern female pop icon both strong and soft, charismatic and vulnerable.

For Lisa, the dichotomy is reflected in her background, too – born in Thailand’s Buriram province and raised by her mother and stepfather, she’s the only Blackpink member not of Korean descent. She is a K-pop star representing that industry and South Korea on a global scale, but she’s also her own person, with her own heritage and life to share.

She first won renown on the Thai scene as part of a popular dance crew, which also produced fellow Thai K-pop star BamBam of Got7, before competing on a popular television competition show.

With her heart set on becoming a K-pop star, Lisa joined prominent Korean music company YG Entertainment when she was 13. Six years later, Blackpink debuted in 2016 with Lisa as the youngest member.

Now 24, she is arguably the most popular Thai celebrity in the world – or certainly the most followed Thai person on Instagram, with over 40 million followers more than the next most popular Thai stars, BamBam and actress Davikah.

Because of her fame, Lisa says it was impossible to not focus on her heritage for her first solo effort. “I wanted to capture the path I walked,” she says, “and I wanted to let fans around the world know the beauty of Thailand.”

Whether she did that remains up for debate: in Thailand, media outlets and internet users have taken to analysing the Thai trappings featured in her music video. Some see the scene where she looks like a police officer with dancers in riot gear as a commentary on the country’s recent political turmoil. Others think her use of certain religious items inappropriate. Regardless of the dialogue, however, Lalisa is well-loved.

It’s with this love that a fan recently called out Lisa for a performance video of Money in which the star wears braids that look like box braids – an oft-discriminated against hairstyle mainly worn by people in black communities.

When a fan addressed the racially fraught hairstyle during an online fansign event, Lisa, in words rarely heard from K-pop stars, answered in an apologetic tone. “I didn’t know … I didn’t have bad intentions,” she said during the call. “I feel so bad. I’m very sorry someone got hurt … I’ll be careful from now on.”

Despite being the biggest star in her country, Lisa presents herself as more darling than diva and is forthright about her mistakes, embracing the many facets that make up the love-worthy Lalisa.

“I want to bring positive energy to Blinks [the collective name for Blackpink fans] all around the world so that I can [be] a good influence,” she says. “I want to be an artist who can give back love as much as I’ve been loved and that fans can be proud of.”

She also has a few words for her younger self, too. “I would like to say some inspiring words to young Lisa like, ‘Keep it up on your work, Lisa! You are doing a great job. You will shine like a star, so do your best!’”

BLACKPINK CAFÉ is a fan-generated website dedicated to the K-POP girl group and global superstars, BLACKPINK. Made by a BLINK, for BLINK.

Follow BLACKPINK

Born in Buriram, Thailand as Pranpriya Manobal on March 27, 1997, Lalisa Manobal (ลลิษา มโนบาล) is a member of South Korean girl group BLACKPINK, which was formed by YG Entertainment in 2016.

She grew up in the Buriram Province and was raised by her mother and stepfather. During her childhood, she was a member of a Thai dance group titled We Zaa Cool along with BamBam of GOT7 and Ten of NCT 127.

In 2010, she auditioned for YG Entertainment in Thailand because she wanted to become an idol in South Korea. She later visited a fortune-teller with her mom and they told her to change her name to Lalisa , which means “one who is praised.” A week later, Lisa got the call and became a YG trainee in April 2011, making her the first international trainee of the company.

She was revealed to the public a year later through a dance cover of Chris Brown ’s “Turn Up The Music.” The video was uploaded to YG’s YouTube channel with the title Who’s That Girl? , which was the catchphrase used for all the teasers of YG’s new girl group members. Its debut was delayed several years until June 8, 2016, when Lisa was confirmed as the second member of BLACKPINK.

On September 10, 2021, Lisa made her solo debut with the release of her self-titled single album, LALISA . The title track “LALISA” broke two Guinness world records with its music video , which got 73,6 million views the day of release. The first record was for the most-viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours and the second record was for the most-viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a solo K-pop artist. Besides that, both tracks in the single album made it to the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts.

A month after LALISA , she continued with her solo career and collaborated with French producer DJ Snake on “SG” with American-rapper Megan Thee Stallion and Puerto-Rican singer Ozuna .

On July 28, 2024, Lisa released her single “ROCKSTAR” under her own label, LLOUD . The song showed a new side of Lisa with enchanting synths and electric vocals. The music video was filmed in her city, Bangkok, and spread the diversity of her culture. The release had immediate great impact, as it showed Thai icons of the LGBT+ community and Thailand’s governor stated he was gonna improve the conditions of the film site, Bangkok’s China Town, making it more accessible for Lisa’s fans coming to visit.

In 2010, she attended an audition for YG Entertainment in her native Thailand — and became the only person to get accepted among 4,000 aspiring trainees. Soon after, she moved to Seoul, alone, without knowing a word of Korean (she’s now fluent), calling her mom in Bangkok every day.

Lisa has a knack for putting others at ease, laughing and joking easily, but onstage and onscreen, her eyes change: They’re alight with ferocity, as she raps, dances, and sings, an unfaltering symbol of the swag and confidence that’s Blackpink ’s calling card. Speaking in Korean and English, she talks about how she loves Blackpink but also has ambitions to try new things. Her 2021 solo single “Lalisa” is infused with a maximalist mix of rap, EDM, brass riffs, and even traditional Thai instruments. Another solo single, “Money,” dethroned Drake to take the top spot on  Billboard ’s Rap Digital Songs Sales chart. “I respect everyone’s roles within Blackpink,” she says. “I don’t want to break this image; I want to keep doing what I do within Blackpink. But personally, I have so many things I want to try. I love photography, I want to try acting, and more.”

(In celebration of Blackpink’s appearance on the cover of Rolling Stone , we’re publishing individual digital covers with each member of the group; check back throughout this week for more.)

You’re Blackpink’s main dancer and lead rapper, and you also sing. What are you bad at? Interviews! It’s so hard to express myself through language. Even in Thai. Like, when you ask, “Do you have anything to say to your fans?” In my head, there are so many things, but I don’t know which words to use. I’m completely confident expressing myself through my body, like, “Ohhh, my gawwwd, this is my stage!” But when it comes to speaking, it’s hard for me. I’m actually sweating now. So nervous.

It makes sense that you’re fluent in Thai and Korean. How did you come to speak English so well? I don’t! I learned English at school in Thailand. I went to a full Thai school until sixth grade. Since middle school I went to a bilingual school — well, not bilingual; they had an English program where you learn every subject in English. I have a little Thai accent when I speak English, so people can tell, “Oh, you’re not from here.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

You took part in dance competitions as a child in Thailand. Is that what you wanted to do? What was your childhood dream? A stewardess! I once went to Singapore with my family. I saw the beautiful flight attendants on Singapore Airlines, wearing this uniform — a really long dress with sleeves down to the elbow, maybe purple fabric, with patterns. And this pretty unni [“older sister” in Korean] talked to me in English: “Do you want some milk?” And I was like, “Wow, yes please!” So as soon as we landed in Singapore, I begged my mom to buy me their uniform, which she did. But sadly, I didn’t meet the height requirements — you have to be tall enough to reach the overhead luggage.

And then you trained to become a dancer, with encouragement from your mom. I’ve been going to dance classes since I was five. I competed in all these dance competitions. My dad would just say, “Oh, you won? Nice!” And that was that — it’s a dad thing. My mom was my audience at home, when I danced to the dance CDs she bought. Turns out, her dream was to be an actor. So when I was little, she sent me to acting and dancing classes. I hated acting. I was a baby, trying to memorize lines, but I didn’t know how to read! How could I memorize lines? I was bullied by an oppa [“older brother” in Korean] in my class, because I couldn’t read. I was, like, four.

You called your mom every day after you moved here to become a trainee. She’d say, “Don’t come back! Just hang on for another year!” There would be times when I’d say, “I just want to go back to school.” Our debut plans kept being pushed back and back, and I couldn’t see the end of this. “When was this going to end? Like, when?! Do we have to get tested every single month?” When I told her, “I want to quit,” my mom would say, “Think about your situation. How many kids want to be in your place? If you give up and come home, do you think you can have a normal life? You’re just going to try again. You’re here now, just hold on until the end.”

More than a decade later, you’re one of K-pop’s biggest stars. How do the young YG trainees greet you? Do you give them advice? They bow, like, 90 degrees, “ Annyeonghaseyo! ” [formal “hello” in Korean]. There is a Thai trainee that reminds me of when I was young. I’m trying to take care of her. It’s not so much about giving advice. We eat together, go shopping. She’s 17 and has been here for nearly two years. I asked her once, “Is there anything you’re struggling with?” And she started to cry. “I want to dance like you, unni, but I’m so bad, and I’m so sad about that.” I just tell her, “Keep practicing!”

I can see why she looks up to you. When you appear in Blackpink videos, the screen lights up. But you also know how to play — how to not take yourself too seriously. You know, I’ve never thought about it like that. You’re the first one to say it in such detail. Normally, people just tell me, “You look great! You look cool!” When I’m shooting a music video, there’s so much to care about: pretty facial expressions, outfits, is my hair too messy? And so on. But I also have all these ideas that I imagine for my particular scene. Should I try this gesture? Or that? Sometimes it doesn’t work out the way I want. But I just do things. I just try.

Many fans think of you as “Blackpink’s best dancer.” Do you sometimes want to break this image, or try different things? I respect everyone’s roles within Blackpink. I don’t want to break this image; I want to keep doing what I do within Blackpink. But personally, I have so many things I want to try. I love photography, I want to try acting, and more.

What are you curious about in music? Blackpink is trying different songs, but there’s still a lot we haven’t done. Reggae, even jazz, like you said before. Is hip-hop the only thing I’m good at? What if it turns out I’m also good at traditional Thai music? I’m curious to know how much I can expand what I do. Even within dance, there are so many genres I haven’t tried, like contemporary dance! Music-wise, dance-wise, I feel like I still have to learn more.

Are there any artists or colleagues who make you jealous? Not so much jealousy — Rosalía is so cool. She has her own Spanish culture, that’s inside her person, that influences her music. When you see her, you think, “Oh, she’s Spanish.” And she uses her culture so well, making it into her own thing. In [my 2021 solo single] “Lalisa,” I wanted to create a Thai atmosphere.

I just want people to know I’m Thai. Some people don’t know: “Oh, she’s part of a girl group from Korea, so maybe she’s Korean.” So I talked to our producer, Teddy, who put different Thai sounds into my music.

What was it like to go solo, standing onstage alone? Nervous. Very nervous. Normally when the four of us are together — let’s say Chaeyoung [Rosé] gives her 100 percent. Then the rest of us can feel it onstage. And unconsciously I also get this energy of “Shoot, I need to do more too.” We boost each other in that way. But if I stand alone, it’s different. I can’t take energy from anybody. It just has to come from me. And the fans just watch only me. It was a huge burden. But what can you do? This is my solo! I just practice and monitor myself a lot.

Trump Warns That if Kamala Harris Wins, ‘Everybody Gets Health Care’

Jack russell, former great white singer, dead at 63, the cia sent him deep undercover to spy on islamic radicals. it cost him everything, after trump’s disastrous musk interview, harris mocks 'rich guys' who can't run a livestream, maga official found guilty of tampering with 2020 voting machines.

Your producer, Teddy Park, is probably one of the most important people for Blackpink. How does he stimulate you musically? Oppa  knows how to speak to me, and I understand him. And then he pushes so hard. He’d say, “Again, again, again. A little more, a little prettier.” In the past, I used to only rap. One day, he told me to try vocals. But I’m so bad at singing. At least, there was a time when I was really bad. That whole year between “As If It’s Your Last” [2017] and “Ddu-du Ddu-du” [2018] was really rough for me. When I went to the studio to record, nothing came out. I cried. I felt like I was bringing the team down.  Oppa  pushed me hard. “You can’t? No. Try harder. Go back in there.” Because of Teddy, I overcame that time. I feel a little more confident about singing now.

In Light Up the Sky, the 2020 Netflix documentary about Blackpink, you said, “I’m a role model in Thailand, but I don’t even know what kind of a musician I’ll be.” What did you mean by that? Whenever I go to Thailand, there’s this new generation of babies that all look up to me: “I want to be like Lisa, unni !” But when I look at myself, I am lacking in so many areas. There are so many things I don’t know because I’m still young. They look up to me as an idol, but I still don’t think I’m perfect enough to be their idol. Am I there yet? Am I ready? I’m actually really curious. In what ways am I an idol to those kids? I still feel I have a long way to go.

You went back to Thailand recently for your birthday. How was it? It was the first time in three years. My mom and dad are getting old. Now we don’t have quarantine; it’s easier to travel. Whenever I have time, I want to return to Thailand. I don’t want to waste my time. I don’t want to say, “I don’t care what the company is gonna say!” But I want to see them as often as I can.

What do you miss most about living with your family? I miss traveling together. My dad is Swiss, and he really values having a family day. We’d go to a mall together. And at least once or twice a year, we went traveling abroad together. I miss that so much. When Blackpink was doing the world tour, we did visit Europe together. That was so convenient because of packing. “Mom, come, please,” I’d say, and she’d just pack all my stuff. “Mom, take out my stuff, please,” and she’d unpack. It’s the best.

You’ll be her baby forever. I actually asked her, “Mom, how old do you think I look?” She said, to her, I’ll always be five.

Do you still talk to your mom on the phone everyday? You mentioned in the past that she takes care of your finances. I talked to her this morning. It’s her birthday soon. I just asked her, “Where are you gonna go on your birthday?” And she doesn’t take care of my finances anymore! Since debut, I’ve been managing my own money. I buy whatever I want. The advantage to Mom managing my money was, there was always a limit to how much I could spend a month. But now that I’m alone … “Huh? Where did it go?”

It’s clear that family is the most important thing in your life. Who is the funniest? My dad has the typical middle-aged-man humor. Mom is really affectionate and cute. I love their dynamics together. Daddy is like, “Ugh, whatever,” while Mom goes, “ Ooooh , Daddy.” Just watching them makes me laugh.

Have you ever wondered what will happen if Blackpink ends one day? I don’t think we’ve even talked about this amongst ourselves. We’ve jokingly said, “Jisoo unni is going to live in Hawaii. Lisa will return to Thailand,” but I don’t want to think about the end. It’s too sad. Someday we’ll get married and things like that. But then I see the Spice Girls, how they got together for a reunion concert. Can we do that too someday? Will I be able to dance then, like I do now? I mean, won’t Blackpink last at least 10 more years? We’ll be nearly 40 by then.

Who will Lisa be in her forties? I don’t know. I’ll still have good vibes, doing different things, like now.

What are you up to these days? We’re all going back and forth from the recording studio, or doing our own stuff, or going abroad because of fashion business. I’ve been working nonstop for the past week without a break. If I have a day off, I just stay at home. After this interview, I have nothing else scheduled today. I think I’ll go back to the house. . . . You know, in this interview, I wanted you to feel like my answers were coming from inside me, without a filter, as honestly as possible. I don’t have the prettiest words to tell you. I only have what’s inside me.

Everything You Need To Know About Lisa From Blackpink

by Carina Fischer

27 Jun 2021

Lisa is one quarter of world-famous K-pop group, Blackpink. The group took the world by storm at their debut in 2016, and haven’t looked back since – just last year, Blackpink broke five Guinness World Records with the release of their single “How You Like That”. The music video quickly became the most-viewed YouTube video in the first 24 hours of its release, with 86.3 million views (it has now surpassed 900 million). Lisa is the group’s dancing and rapping sensation, known for her pristine bangs , spirited personality and effortless style. But beyond surface-level, what else is there to know about Blackpink’s “Dancing Machine”? We’ve rounded up the need-to-know details about Lisa, below.

She is originally from Thailand, and was the first non-Korean star to debut with YG Entertainment

The star is of Thai descent, and grew up in Buriram Province, Thailand. Originally born as Pranpriya, she later changed her name to Lalisa, as per the advice of a fortune teller for added prosperity.

She is Celine’s first ever brand ambassador

She has a love for thrifting and vintage fashion

Although she frequently dons the likes of luxury fashion house’s Celine, Balenciaga, Chanel and more, Lisa is a keen thrifter, and enjoys finding unique vintage treasures to break up her wardrobe.

She did not speak any Korean before arriving at YG in 2011, but now speaks 4 languages

When Lisa was selected out of 4,000 other Thai girls to become a trainee in Korea, she did not speak a word of Korean. During the 5-year trainee process, she worked hard, and, according to her fellow Blackpink member, Jennie, “would always get A’s for everything.” Lisa now speaks fluent Korean, English, Thai, Japanese, and even some Chinese!

She is the most followed K-pop idol on Instagram

The star boasts an impressive 54.5 million followers on Instagram, making her the most followed out of her fellow Blackpink members, as well as being the most followed K-pop idol, period.

She is often referred to as Blackpink’s “Dancing Machine”

She is the happy, uplifting group member that keeps everyone in high spirits

Lisa’s spirited energy and spunky personality never fails to lift spirits. “She brings positive energy into the group,” said Jennie in the documentary Blackpink: Light Up The Sky. “If someone is fed up one day, she makes that person laugh. She keeps us energized,” added Jisoo.

“It’s A New Swag That Was Hidden Inside Me”: Blackpink’s Lisa Talks Vogue Through Her Solo Debut

Image may contain Human Person and Finger

Lisa (aka Lalisa Manobal) is a superstar. There’s her 59.9 million Instagram followers, her ambassadorships with Bulgari and Celine, her role as a dancer and rapper in Blackpink, and now there’s her solo debut, “Lalisa”, which has topped iTunes charts in 60 countries, and became the fastest track by a K-pop soloist to reach a staggering 100 million views, a feat achieved in a mere two days.

Was there ever any doubt that this would be a record-breaking release for the 24-year-old artist? From the moment Blackpink debuted with “Whistle” and “Boombayah” in the summer of 2016, Lisa had “it”. In the five years since, she’s only expanded on those qualities, and yet, for all her success and accolades, remains the hard-working, cat-loving Lalisa that the Blackpink fandom first fell in love with.

The balancing act is woven throughout her new single “Lalisa” – the first off her debut single album of the same name; not once does she relinquish the spotlight – such is the strength of her stage presence – despite the whirlwind of extravagant set and outfit switches, and she imbues the track with a combination of intimidating confidence and playfulness. “Want you to ring the alarm / Tell it to the world, kiss my name,” she demands, and, honestly, who are we to disobey?

Below, Lisa gives us the lowdown on what makes a cultural icon of our times tick.

The title of your single is your own name... What do you hope fans will learn about you as they listen?

I wanted to show you who I am through my first single and solo album. The title song “Lalisa” is also my real name, and it’s full of my confidence. I’ve often said to Blinks, “Always be confident,” and I wanted to deliver this message through this record. Both the title song and the B-track, “Money”, are songs that I really enjoy dancing and rapping to myself.

What did you discover about yourself when working as a soloist that surprised you?

While I was working on this song, I found out that I like not only melodic rap but also tight rap. I tried a tight rap in “Money”, and I really like this hip-hop style, which spits out fast with a strong beat. It’s a new swag that was hidden inside me. It’s probably the first time the fans have heard it, so I think it’s fun to compare how it’s different from the melodic rap.

Why I Wear My Clogs All Summer, Every Summer

The teasers were dark and dramatic – like the shot of you hanging from a chain wearing an incredible Alexandre Vauthier dress – but the video and its styling was vibrant and bold. What fuelled these contrasting ideas, and how involved were you in the concepts?

Through this album, I wanted to give back positivity and energy to all my fans. So this is why the teaser and everything contained that strong vibe!

What was the most strenuous, but also the most enjoyable, part of making your solo album?

There wasn’t anything particularly difficult. Unlike working with a group, I have to fill up the stage by myself this time. The performance lasts for three minutes, and it can shine only when you maintain your own energy and power. I therefore tried harder to manage my physical strength and health with the thought of, “If you’re going to do it, do it right!” I worked out every day and did Pilates steadily to keep in shape and gain strength. It definitely helped a lot.

How many songs did you listen to and demo before deciding these two tracks were the right sounds for you?

I didn’t choose just two songs from the beginning. I came out with two songs because I liked them the most. When I heard them for the first time, I thought they were mine!

You’ve become instantly recognisable across the world, and very much in demand – how do you ground yourself and keep a clear mind?

I always try to think positively. Even if I’m stressed out, I cheer up by looking at our cats and thinking about Blinks!

You’re known within fashion and music circles as a style icon, but what are you most comfortable wearing?

I usually wear cropped tops and sweatpants. It’s a perfect look to practice dancing in. And I also like vintage styles, as well as pretty necklaces and accessories.

Being a globally successful performer brings with it its own set of demands and pressures; how do you overcome any unwanted feelings that might creep into your mind?

I’m always happy with my lovely family and friends – my [real] family, who has always given me love and support, and my other family, the Blackpink members. And also my fans, Blinks! These are the people encouraging me to work harder every time.

Blackpink’s Lisa Is Ready to Be Unleashed

With a new solo project, her own management company, and her acting debut in The White Lotus , the K-pop idol is sitting pretty.

lisa elle 0924

In K-pop vernacular, the “Killing Part” is the ultimate slay of a song. It’s different from what we know as a hook, the part of a pop chorus that’s expertly lab-engineered to get lodged in your brain. The Killing Part, on the other hand, is a singular, unpredictable moment, typically in the second half of a video: a lightning-in-a-bottle alchemy of visual and vocal elements that shuts the whole thing down. And, of course, gets replayed millions of times on social media.

lisa elle 0924

“Play it safe? No,” says Lisa, 27, with a sly grin and wag of her finger (not the middle one).

She arrived just hours ago in Los Angeles from a long overseas flight. Her skin is flawless; her mood smiley, yet slightly antsy. It’s two days before the global drop of “Rockstar,” her first solo release in three years. At the very start of our Zoom, when I tell her I’ve listened to the track early, her first reaction is to go bug-eyed, throw her hands on her head, and gasp with an air of equal parts delight and panic, “Oh, nooo!”

.css-1aear8u:before{margin:0 auto 0.9375rem;width:34px;height:25px;content:'';display:block;background-repeat:no-repeat;}.loaded .css-1aear8u:before{background-image:url(/_assets/design-tokens/elle/static/images/quote.fddce92.svg);} .css-curasl{margin:0rem;font-size:1.625rem;line-height:1.2;font-family:SaolDisplay,SaolDisplay-fallback,SaolDisplay-roboto,SaolDisplay-local,Georgia,Times,serif;margin-bottom:0.3125rem;font-weight:normal;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.125rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 40.625rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.125rem;line-height:1.2;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.25rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 73.75rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.375rem;line-height:1.2;}}.css-curasl em,.css-curasl i{font-style:italic;font-family:inherit;}.css-curasl b,.css-curasl strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-curasl i,.css-curasl em{font-style:italic;} To be honest, I’m not the type who’s really good at expressing my feelings. Lately, I feel more confident of what I think, and say it out loud.”

lisa elle 0924

If you only know Lisa from her brash performance persona, that self-effacing reaction might seem like a contradiction. But like her fellow Blackpink bandmates, who’ve shattered countless music-industry records and have each scored major high-end brand deals—and who were recently invested as honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire by King Charles III—she leaves any semblance of ego onstage. They all came up through YG Entertainment, the storied South Korean management agency, recording production company, and record label responsible for bombastic acts like Psy, BigBang, and 2NE1. But in the K-pop world, actual arrogance or diva behavior isn’t tolerated, let alone glamorized. Part of K-pop stars’ appeal in the West has been this contrast in attitude from some Hollywood celebrities—a refreshing, genuine humility.

Lisa is no exception. While “Rockstar” includes lyrics about “stealin’ diamonds” and bluster about her lavish lifestyle (“tight dress, LV sent it”), she’s known by her friends and bandmates as especially funny and easygoing. On a rare day off, she’s likely to be geeking out over House of the Dragon (“I wait patiently every week now,” she gushes), shopping online in bed, chomping on seaweed snacks, and lounging in chunky hoodies and pajama pants.

lisa elle 0924

But make no mistake: She’s always had that rock-star spirit, and she’s been waiting to unleash the extent of it upon the world. Lately, she’s been expanding beyond the chunky hoodies and leaning into her baddie self. “I’m into leather stuff,” she says. “Big, big earrings. Silver accessories. When I wear it, I just feel like, ‘Okay, I’m a rock star.’ I’m going to walk like a rock star. I’m going to sit like a rock star.”

And as always for the style icon, fashion tells her inner story as well. “To be honest, I’m not the type who’s really good at expressing my feelings,” she admits. “Lately, I feel more confident of what I think, and say it out loud.”

She’s drawing upon that voice as she enters a new chapter in her career, with new solo music and a co-headlining set at the Global Citizen Festival in New York on September 28, her first solo festival show. Expectations are high: Her first solo endeavor in 2021,“Lalisa,” racked up a record-breaking 73.6 million views within 24 hours of its release, and the second single,“Money,” achieved bona fide virality, becoming the first K-pop solo single to reach one billion streams on Spotify.

In spite of the undeniable success of “Lalisa,” the new project (which was still tightly under wraps at press time) feels in some ways like a reintroduction for Lisa, her true debut. It’s her first work that’s independent of YG. Unlike “Lalisa,” it’s being released under a partnership between RCA Records and Lisa’s own management company, Lloud Co.—the name of which serves as a perfect, one-word manifesto while also playing on the double L’s of her given name.

lisa elle 0924

“I think what I’ve learned from last time is me, myself, saying what I like and what I don’t like,” says Lisa of making creative decisions under her own banner. “I think that’s the most important. Because if I say, ‘Ah, it’s okay,’ [people] don’t know—like, am I really okay with it? So I have to be able to say ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Not in between.”

That level of independence may not sound all that radical for a superstar with profound global influence—Lisa is the most-followed K-pop artist on Instagram, boasting 104 million followers—but it is remarkable for an artist who rose through the K-pop industrial complex. Like other idol groups formed under top South Korean companies like YG, Blackpink is the product of the legendary, still somewhat mysterious K-pop trainee process.

lisa elle 0924

The notorious rigor of the experience is hard to exaggerate—and trust me, I’ve tried. When I fictionalized the life of a K-pop trainee in my young adult novels, my editors at Scholastic, which published The Hunger Games , thought I was playing up key details for drama. But if anything, I softened what I found in my research: the 14-hour-a-day schedules; the restrictive rules about dating (strictly forbidden), diet, and “proper” behavior; and perhaps roughest of all, the psychological agony of staking your entire youth on a minuscule chance at being selected to debut in a group, let alone a group that goes on to achieve any modicum of success.

For Lisa, who was born in the Buriram Province of Thailand, being thrown into the Thunderdome-like trainee system was made even more challenging by being a foreigner in an industry that wasn’t known for being welcoming to outsiders at the time. In 2010, at age 13, she beat out thousands of other hopefuls in an open YG audition—but that was only the beginning of the hard part. The following year, she left her tight-knit family to move into a trainee dorm, becoming YG’s first-ever idol-in-the-making of non-Korean descent. The only Korean she knew was the word for “hello.”

lisa elle 0924

  • Beauty Tip: Indulge in enchanting cedarwood and ginger notes with Louis Vuitton’s LV Lovers fragrance.

The 2020 Netflix documentary Blackpink: Light Up the Sky offered a rare glimpse into the group’s brutal training days—a time when her fellow trainees would become her friends and, as a natural outcome of a system designed to be cutthroat, her fiercest rivals. In the doc, none of the members said they regretted the tough, often lonely period, though one broke down into tears remembering leaving her family. But Lisa was among those who showed a palpable mettle. She recalled, “I had to keep fighting. I had to give it my all. I didn’t care about how long it would take. I said, ‘Bring it on! I don’t care anymore!’”

Her fellow trainees were stunned by how quickly she became fluent in Korean. She’s also fluent in Thai and English (in our interview, she only dipped into Korean on occasion to express especially big emotions) and conversant in basic Chinese and Japanese (as referenced in the playful “Rockstar” line, “‘Lisa, can you teach me Japanese’ / I say, Hai, hai!”). She was also the standout dancer as a trainee and is still, objectively, the most skilled and confident dancer in Blackpink. In the documentary, bandmate Jennie remembered marveling, “As soon as Lisa came in, that’s when I thought, ‘Wow, there are people who are born to do this.’ ”

lisa elle 0924

And she was. While a few other K-pop girl groups had had some success in the U.S., the genre’s polished style didn’t always translate in the American market. In contrast, Blackpink had the stylized badassery that was cool in every language, and Lisa’s international background and authenticity was, as Lilies (as Lisa stans call themselves) would agree, essential to the group’s X factor from day one.“When I’m onstage [with Blackpink], I share my energy with my members,” Lisa tells me. “If she gives 100, I’ll give 120. We can feel each other. And I love that energy.”

Of course we’re continuing [Blackpink], for sure. It is not just because of our fans, it’s for ourselves. There was no doubt. This is our life.”

lisa elle 0924

To Blackpink fans worried that the members’ solo pursuits mean an end to the group, Lisa offers reassurance. While she has parted ways with YG for her solo career (as have members Jennie, Jisoo, and Rosé), all four renewed their contracts for future work as a group. In July, YG founder Yang Hyun-suk teased a potential tour in 2025. “Of course we’re continuing, for sure,” Lisa says. “We’re so proud of Blackpink, and I love Blackpink. It is not just because of our fans, it’s for ourselves.” She shifts into Korean to say, “There was no doubt. This is our life.”

For the present, Lisa is calling her own shots and bringing her own energy—including tying more of her art back to her homeland of Thailand. For the “Rockstar” music video, Lisa danced on the iconic Yaowarat Road in Bangkok’s Chinatown. And she’s taking on her first acting role in the Thailand-set third season of The White Lotus , the wildly popular, culture-shaping HBO social satire created by Mike White. Filmed in Bangkok and the islands of Phuket and Koh Samui, the project was a welcome chance “to be back home, to have Thai food every day,” and to have her mother close by on set.

lisa elle 0924

“Oh my God, Mike White? I think he’s a genius,” Lisa gushes as she recalls learning she nabbed the role. “I think I cried. I was with my friends, my mom’s friends, and my mom as well, but I didn’t tell them that I auditioned for it. I’m super excited and nervous, because it’s my first acting project. So I was happy for a second, and then I was like, ‘Oh, wait, wait, how am I going to deliver this?’”

While she can’t let slip any details about the season or about her role—she expertly dodges the question when I ask if she’ll be singing or dancing—she’s taken acting classes and seems characteristically confident after her initial doubts. “It’s pretty new to me, but I think it’s similar to shooting music videos...I’m excited for my fans to see it.” The anthology series follows a set of privileged vacationers luxuriating in jaw-dropping settings and clashing with locals, but we know from Lisa that at least one major character will come off well: “I feel like people are going to fall in love with Thailand even more.”

lisa elle 0924

Another profound perk that comes with taking control of her own career with Lloud is that she’ll now own her master recordings outright—a seemingly basic privilege that even famously self-directed American stars like Taylor Swift have had to fight for. “I don’t think it’s easy for anyone to be able to get that,” Lisa says. “It feels like a dream. I’m not sure if it’s real or not.” (But don’t expect her to go on her own Eras Tour just yet. “She’s incredible!” Lisa says of Swift, whose show she caught in Singapore. “Singing alone on a stage for three and a half hours is crazy...I maybe could do it with a lot of practice.”)

lisa elle 0924

It’s no wonder that things feel a little surreal. To go from a cloistered K-pop trainee to a mogul who’s secured full ownership of her own voice is true rock-star shit. When I ask her what she’d tell her 13-year-old trainee-hopeful self now, she looks at the ceiling with a wry grin. Then she deadpans, “I’d say, ‘Let her suffer.’” She bursts out laughing and goes on: “I wouldn’t spoil any of this. I’d say, ‘Don’t think too much about the future. Just focus on what you’re doing right now. But don’t quit. Just don’t quit.’”

Lalisa Manobal (also spelled Manoban ; born Pranpriya Manobal ; March 27, 1997), known professionally as Lisa ( Hangul : 리사 ), is a Thai rapper, singer, and dancer. She is a member of the South Korean girl group Blackpink , which debuted under YG Entertainment in August 2016. She is set to make her acting debut in 2025 in the HBO television series The White Lotus .

Lisa made her debut as a solo artist with the single album Lalisa in September 2021, which made her the first female artist to sell 736,000 copies of an album in its first week in South Korea. The music video for its lead single became the most-viewed music video in the first 24 hours on YouTube by a solo artist. Both "Lalisa" and the album's viral second single "Money" charted in the top ten of the Billboard Global 200, with the latter breaking the record for the longest-charting song by a female K-pop soloist on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart . Lalisa and "Money" became the first album and song by a K-pop solo artist to reach one billion streams on Spotify , respectively. In 2024, Lisa established her own management company named Lloud and signed with RCA Records .

Lisa earned several accolades throughout her career, including eight Guinness World Records , a Gaon Chart Music Award, a Mnet Asian Music Award, and the first MTV Video Music Award and MTV Europe Music Award ever won by a K-pop soloist. She is the most-followed K-pop artist on Instagram, as well as the most-subscribed K-pop solo artist on YouTube. Lisa was honored as a cultural ambassador leader by the Thailand Ministry of Culture and has been acknowledged by former Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha for her contributions to spreading Thai culture globally.

Born Pranpriya Manobal on March 27, 1997, in Buriram Province, Thailand, she later legally changed her name to Lalisa, meaning "the one being praised", at the advice of a fortune teller for prosperity. An only child, she was raised by her Thai mother, Chitthip Brüschweiler, and Swiss stepfather and chef Marco Brüschweiler. Lisa completed secondary education at Praphamontree School I and II. She is multilingual ; along with her native Thai, she speaks fluent Korean and English, as well as basic Japanese and Chinese.

After enrolling in dance classes at the age of four, she began competing regularly in contests, including in To Be Number One, and joined the eleven-member dance crew We Zaa Cool alongside BamBam of Got7 . In September 2009, the crew entered the LG Entertainment Million Dream Sanan World competition broadcast on Channel 9 and won the Special Team Award. Lisa also participated as a school representative in the singing contest Top 3 Good Morals of Thailand, hosted by the Moral Promotion Center in early 2009, finishing as the runner-up.

In 2010, at age 13, Lisa auditioned to join South Korean record label YG Entertainment in Thailand. She gained an interest in the K-pop industry in her childhood, admiring artists such as BigBang and 2NE1 , and aspired to follow a similar path. Among the 4,000 applicants, she was the only individual to qualify, which prompted then-CEO Yang Hyun-suk into offering Lisa a chance to become a YG Entertainment trainee. At her audition, Lisa also impressed one of the judges, Danny Im of 1TYM, who later praised her on-stage confidence and her off-stage attitude.

In 2011, Lisa moved to South Korea to begin her formal training as a trainee. She officially joined the label as its first non-ethnically Korean trainee on April 11. In November 2013, she appeared in the music video for labelmate Taeyang 's single "Ringa Linga" as a background dancer alongside members of labelmates and boy bands iKon and Winner. In March 2015, Lisa undertook her first modelling job for the streetwear brand Nona9on, followed by South Korean cosmetics brand Moonshot in 2016.

In August 2016, Lisa debuted as one of four members of South Korean girl group Blackpink , the first non-ethnically Korean artist under the label. The group's debut single album Square One featured lead singles "Whistle", which topped all South Korean charts upon debut, and "Boombayah". In 2018, Blackpink signed with Interscope Records in a global partnership with YG Entertainment.

Lisa became a permanent cast member on the Korea Army Academy edition of the MBC military variety program Real Man 300 from September 21, 2018, onward. Her first role on a television program since her debut, it earned her the unofficial Character of the Year award at the 2018 MBC Entertainment Awards.

On November 5, 2018, Lisa unveiled her YouTube channel, Lilifilm Official, focusing on travelling, lifestyle, and dance. As of July 2019, she has over 1.3 million subscribers and received a YouTube Gold Play Button. One of her dance performance videos went viral in 2020 as a result of a meme derived from the video; celebrities such as Dolly Parton , Stephen Colbert , James Corden , Luke Evans , and Lil Nas X participated in the trend.

In March 2020, Lisa served as the dance mentor on iQIYI's Chinese girl group survival program Youth With You Season 2 . In February 2021, she returned as dance mentor in the show's third season for boy groups.

On April 19, 2021, YG Entertainment revealed to The Korea Herald that Lisa would be the third member of Blackpink to debut as a soloist, with the official schedule to be announced later. On July 12, through Star News , the label revealed that filming for her music video was underway. Lisa's debut single album Lalisa and its lead single of the same name were released on September 10, 2021. The music video for "Lalisa" became the most-viewed video by a soloist in 24 hours with 73.6 million views, breaking the record held by Taylor Swift 's "Me!" featuring Brendon Urie , for which she earned two Guinness World Records . The song debuted at number 84 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and at number two on the Billboard Global 200, becoming Lisa's first top-ten song on the latter. The album sold 736,221 copies in South Korea in its first week, setting the record for the highest first-week sales among female artists domestically and making Lisa the first female soloist to surpass the 500,000-copy mark in one week.

The album's B-side track "Money" received an exclusive dance performance video that was released to YouTube on September 24. The song witnessed a surge in popularity after it became viral on social media, and began to rise in the international charts. As a result, Interscope Records sent the song to US contemporary hit radio on November 9, 2021, as the album's second single. The single peaked at number ten on the Billboard Global 200, becoming Lisa's second top-ten hit after "Lalisa". In the US, it peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 90, earning Lisa her second career solo entry, and became the first song by a female K-pop soloist to chart for multiple weeks on the chart. "Money" peaked at number 46 on the UK Singles Chart and charted for eight weeks, becoming the longest-charting female K-pop soloist song in the country as well.

Lisa collaborated with French record producer DJ Snake, Puerto Rican singer Ozuna , and American rapper Megan Thee Stallion on the moombahton and Latin trap song "SG". The single was released on October 22, 2021, and featured songwriting and composition credits by Lisa. A music video starring the four artists in Miami was directed by Colin Tilley and released simultaneously with the single. The song peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Global 200. In the US, it peaked at number two on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 and became Lisa's first number-one song on the Latin Airplay chart.

On August 28, 2022, Lisa won the MTV Video Music Award for Best K-Pop for "Lalisa" and became the first K-pop solo artist to win an MTV Video Music Award. On November 13, she won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best K-Pop and became the first solo K-pop artist in history to win an MTV Europe Music Award as well. Lisa was awarded two Guinness World Records in 2023 for the achievements, in addition to a third for becoming the most followed K-pop artist on Instagram.

Lisa was awarded two further Guinness World Records in May for the fastest solo female K-pop artist to reach 1 billion streams and the first album by a solo K-pop artist to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify with Lalisa . With this, she became the K-pop soloist with the most Guinness World Records in history, winning seven as compared to former record-holder Psy 's five.

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - AUGUST 09: Lisa of BLACKPINK attends 'Pink Carpet' event for BLACKPINK's ... [+] concert film "BLACKPINK World Tour ‘Born Pink’ In Cinemas" at Times Square in Yeongdeungpo-gu on August 09, 2024 in Seoul, South Korea. Blackpink singer Lisa makes history as her new single "Rockstar" debuts on Billboard's Pop Airplay chart, doubling her total number of placements on the radio tally. (Photo by The Chosunilbo JNS/Imazins via Getty Images)

Blackpink singer Lisa broke out on her own and launched a solo music career in 2021. She only released a handful of tunes at the time, but they all became chart wins, and she proved her immense popularity apart from the band that made her a superstar.

Recently, Lisa kicked off the second chapter of her solo music career, and things are going very well. Only a few weeks ago, the singer shared her new single “Rockstar,” which quickly became another global hit for the musician. Now, the tune reaches one of Billboard’s radio rankings, and in doing so, it helps her make history.

“Rockstar” debuts on the Pop Airplay chart this week. The tally ranks the most successful tracks at top 40 pop radio stations across the U.S. every frame. Lisa’s latest offering is new at No. 39—second-to-last place—on the list this frame.

Lisa has now sent two tracks to the Pop Airplay ranking on her own. That resets the record for the most placements on the tally among solo female artists known primarily for making K-pop music. Lisa is actually originally from Thailand, but she became a star thanks to her work in the K-pop space, and that style has made up the bulk of her output.

Before this week, Lisa was tied with several other women hailing from South Korea, as all of them had only managed one hit on the Pop Airplay tally. Now, she’s passed names like Alexa, Bibi, and even one of her own bandmates.

Jennie, another one of the singers in Blackpink, has also reached the Pop Airplay chart as a solo star. She rose as high as No. 18 alongside The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp on “One of the Girls,” which became a worldwide hit in late 2023.

Looking at all K-pop solo musicians who have reached the Pop Airplay chart, Lisa comes in second place on the ranking of those who have the most wins on the tally. Only Jung Kook has reached the tally more, and he’s in a very distant first place. The BTS singer has accrued half a dozen appearances on the list throughout his solo career.

“Rockstar” is just getting started on the Pop Airplay chart, but Lisa is already moving on to what’s next. On Friday (August 16), she’ll release her even newer single, “New Woman,” which is a collaboration with Latin superstar Rosalía. Both tracks may be the first samples of a forthcoming project, and perhaps even her first full-length album.

BLACKPINK’s LISA is used to being on stage in front of thousands of screaming fans, but when it came to her casting in the upcoming third season of the HBO drama The White Lotus , the veteran performer got those familiar butterflies in her stomach.

LISA of BLACKPINK Raves About Taylor Swift’s 3-Hour Eras Tour Show: ‘I Maybe Could Do It With a Lot…

Luckily for LISA, while acting is not on her resumé, she does have some relevant experience. “It’s pretty new to me, but I think it’s similar to shooting music videos. I’m excited for my fans to see it,” she said. As for what the third go-round of the murder mystery dramedy has in store, LISA was, of course, mum to avoid any spoilers. “I feel like people are going to fall in love with Thailand even more,” she said diplomatically.

Production on the as-yet-unscheduled third season was initially delayed because of the 2023 writers/actors strikes, with HBO/Max now saying that it is slated to premiere in 2025. The upcoming season of the show that chronicles the lives of the rich and famous is being filmed at luxury resorts across Thailand, which happens to be LISA’s home country.

She told the magazine that filming in Bangkok and the islands of Phuket and Koh Samui was a great chance for the K-pop icon to “be back home, to have Thai food every day” and have her mother be close to the set.

LISA is slated to release a new single on Thursday (August 15), “ New Woman ,” featuring Rosalía as the follow up to her previous solo single, “ Rockstar .”

lisa from blackpink biography

BLACKPINK ‘s Lisa revealed why she was “hurt” the first time she met Lee Young Ji .

451332603_865957692081244_294917

On August 16, Lisa became the first guest on the new series of Young Ji’s YouTube series  No Prepare.

During the episode, after a few drinks, Young Ji explained that she’s always “loved” Lisa, but the BLACKPINK idol didn’t believe her, adding , “But that’s not true… You’re not my fan, though.”

Lisa then shared a story about the first time the duo met. She revealed that it was when Young Ji and Jisoo met, and Lisa was there with fellow BLACKPINK member Rosé, she was so excited to meet the rapper.

However, Lisa explained that Lee Young Ji didn’t seem to want to talk to her as she kept telling the other two BLACKPINK members how much of a fan she was…

But when Lisa said the same, the idol showed Young Ji’s very different reaction.

Lisa explained that she was “hurt.”

Young Ji tried to defend herself, saying that Lisa seemed excited to meet her and even made a cute gesture…

So she tried to do one as well, but it seemed like they both remembered it differently as Lisa thought she only spoke to Jisoo.

Young Ji tried to say it couldn’t be true, trying to cement her status as a BLINK and Lisa fan.

Of course, the duo’s first meeting obviously didn’t impact their relationship as the episode saw Young Ji and Lisa matching each other’s energy. With two different recollections, it would be interesting to see what the other BLACKPINK members remembered.
