How to Get into HKUST Business School: HKUST Essay Tips and Examples

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Business School asks candidates to submit two brief essays as part of their application. The first concerns the applicant’s self-assessed strengths and how they have applied them in the past in a beneficial way. The second essay involves basic topics commonly seen in business school applications: one’s professional goals and how attending the school can help in achieving them. Any applicants who feel the need to share more information with the admissions committee can use the optional essay to do so. Read on for our more in-depth analysis of all the program’s prompts.

HKUST 2023–2024 Essay Tips

Essay 1: what are your strengths please also share an example of how you have used your strengths to make a difference at work or outside of work. (max 350 words).

We think we do not really have to state this, but just in case, be honest about your strengths in this essay, and do not try to “guess” what the committee wants to hear. Be truthful in describing who you legitimately are and what you have been able to accomplish by applying yourself. Transparent or disingenuous statements will not fool or convince anyone and will only reveal you as someone incapable of critical self-evaluation.

We encourage you to first thoroughly and thoughtfully brainstorm to identify your most compelling and revelatory possible responses. Where do you feel you truly excel? What do you repeatedly bring to the table that has allowed you to make meaningful contributions? It might be a hard skill, such as an aptitude for coding or managing finances. It could be a softer skill, such as being able to communicate easily with a wide range of people in just about any circumstance. And do not discount qualities such as empathy and creativity that might lead you to view situations in ways that others do not, thereby allowing you to identify opportunities for change/improvement that others overlook.

With respect to offering an illustrative example of your strengths in action, you want to be able to “own” your answer—as we like to say—meaning that no other applicant could write exactly the same thing as you do, even if the qualities or stories you choose to highlight are very similar. For example, writing something like “One of my greatest strengths is compassion, and I’ve made a difference in my community by volunteering with the local homeless shelter” would be far too general a response and could likely be stated by multiple applicants. Instead, something much more specific like “dedicated every Saturday morning for three years to helping cook and serve breakfast at the local homeless shelter, for which I also devised a bulk-shopping plan that now saves the organization hundreds of dollars each quarter” would stand out for its originality and paint a clearer picture of the candidate who wrote it with respect to their values, dedication, and fiscal creativity. In addition, using a narrative approach is a good way to paint a dynamic picture of how you conduct yourself and to engage your reader.

Essay 2: What are your short and long-term goals. How do you plan to use HKUST’s MBA program to help you achieve those goals? (Max 350 words)

The HKUST admissions committee is simply looking for some rather straightforward information here. With 350 words, you should have plenty of space to outline your professional and business school aspirations in a direct and concise way. Ideally, the connection between your short-term objective and your long-term one will be readily evident and feasible. If not, provide whatever context or explanation is necessary for the admissions committee to understand your intended trajectory and why the transition from one to the other makes sense and should be attainable for you.

You must also illustrate how you believe HKUST will help you pursue and attain your stated goals. The most effective way of doing this is by demonstrating a thorough understanding of what the school offers and presenting a well-thought-out game plan for availing yourself of particular resources. To write a reasoned, nuanced essay, you must first familiarize yourself well with HKUST’s various resources, events, and extracurriculars and pinpoint those that truly pertain to you and the direction in which you hope to move.

Go the extra mile in learning about the school—connect with multiple students and alumni, attend admissions events or visit the campus (if possible), read recent press releases from the program and any news stories about it published elsewhere, and check out the HKUST Business School’s YouTube channel . This will provide the kind of in-depth insight that will show the admissions committee you are really serious about the program and are confident you belong there. Simply presenting a list of classes and clubs you think sound interesting will not suffice, and you absolutely want to avoid vague, pandering statements about how great you think the school is. You must reveal clear connections between your aspirations, what you need to achieve them (e.g., skills, experience[s], connections, exposure), and what HKUST in particular can provide that will enable you to fill those gaps.

This prompt covers basic elements of a traditional personal statement, so we encourage you to download a free copy of our mbaMission Personal Statement Guide , in which we explain in more detail how to write effectively on these topics.

To start your research, you can learn more about HKUST’s academic program, elective courses, location, facilities, and other key features by downloading your free copy of the mbaMission HKUST Program Guide .

Optional Essay: What else would you like the admissions committee to know about you and your application? (Max 250 words)

With this prompt, the admissions committee is acknowledging that some candidates have aspects of their profiles that might need a little clarification or that warrant a special mention. This essay could therefore be your opportunity—if you need one—to address any lingering questions that an admissions officer might have about your candidacy, such as a low GRE or GMAT score, a legal or disciplinary incident, a gap in your professional records, or an unusual choice of recommender.

That said, HKUST leaves the door open for you to discuss any other information about your candidacy that you feel might be pivotal or particularly compelling—that you think the admissions committee truly needs to know to be able to evaluate you fully and effectively (and that might not have been appropriate for either of the required essays). We caution you against submitting a response to this prompt just because you fear that not doing so would somehow count against you, though (it will not). Remember that with each additional essay you write, you are asking the admissions committee to do extra work on your behalf, so you must make sure that the added time is warranted. If you decide to use this essay to impart information that you believe would render your application incomplete if omitted, strive to keep your submission brief and on point.

If you feel you might have a valid reason for submitting this additional essay or are not sure whether the issue you are considering would warrant doing so, we encourage you to download a free copy of our mbaMission Optional Essays Guide , in which we offer detailed advice on when and how to take advantage of the optional essay, along with multiple sample essays.

Cohort Composition

Admissions Score – 2023 Intake

Our Program

The average cohort size is around 55 to 60 students.

GBUS is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. Taking “Create Impact with a Global and Strategic Mindset” as its vision statement, this highly sought-after business program is designed to develop capable and highly motivated students to tackle global challenges. GBUS graduates pursue their dreams of becoming responsible leaders through humility, enthusiasm, cultural sensitivity, compassion, and sound critical thinking.

Student Opportunities

Yes. As part of the graduation requirement, GBUS students are guaranteed to spend at least one semester studying abroad at a top business school of their choice, thus forming a wide global network. Some students can also join the exchange program twice to further extend their global learning across continents.

GBUS supports students to pursue wherever their true passion lies. The holistic GBUS experience prepares students to excel in any career paths they aspire. Many alumni are forming strong professional network in the finance and consulting industry, some of them even become entrepreneurs, or work in different management trainee program, conglomerate retail, marketing, start-up, tech-related industry, or professional services. etc.

HKUST is ranked 1st in Graduate Employability in Hong Kong and 23rd in the World in 2021. 100% of GBUS graduates were engaged in employment or further studies or returned to their homeland.

Yes. GBUS students are allowed to declare an additional major in Business disciplines if they fulfilled the minimum requirements by the end of Year 2.

The medium of instruction at HKUST is English. GBUS students are not required to know Cantonese or Mandarin. All the lectures, course materials and work will be conducted in English except for language courses and a small number of courses which require Chinese usage.

No. There will not be any GPA requirements to stay in GBUS. Most of our GBUS students are high achiever. They are very disciplined and highly motivated in both academic and non-academic arenas. However, please note there is a CGA requirement for renewable scholarships on admissions (if you are awarded one).

No. We do not have any preferred subjects in HKDSE as we value the diversity of our students’ backgrounds. GBUS calculates the HKDSE admissions score based on the results of 6 subjects attained. M1/M2 is treated in the same way as an elective. Extra core or elective subjects might generally be used for giving bonus points or as a tiebreaker only.

You are encouraged to check out our last year admissions score reference in the Figures and Statistics section of this page.

Selected Band A applicants who demonstrate talents and potential for the GBUS program will be invited for an interview. Shortlisted JUPAS candidates will have engagement events and a compulsory Main Round interview. The engagement events will be organized by the HKUST Business School from May to June, and one by the GBUS program in early July, before the release of HKDSE results. Main Round interviews by the GBUS program will be conducted in late July after releasing of HKDSE results.

The format of interview differs every year. The purpose of interview is to assess your critical thinking, communication skill, presentation skill, teamwork, etc. Interview questions cover a wide range of areas, and their purpose is to make sure it is a good fit between the candidate and our program.

A minimum level of academic excellence is a must to get admitted to the program. Beyond so, the program also looks for promising students with good attitude, presentable demeanor, and a good fit for a career in business. The weight of the interview score shall not be over 40% of the total admissions composite score.

Yes. If you are invited to the first-round interview, you will receive a formal feedback letter from us on your interview performance. In general, we do not provide formal feedback to the final-round interview.

Yes. Remember we emphasize the quality of your activities rather than the quantity. Bonus points will be awarded to final Band A applicants with impressive records and personal statements.

No. We accept repeated attempts and combined certificates. There will be no score penalty given the minimum admissions requirements are met.

In general, we do not issue conditional offers for JUPAS applicants except if you are enrolled in particular JUPAS admission schemes.

We strongly advise students to put GBUS as their top JUPAS choice. To maximize your chance of admissions to HKUST Business School, you are encouraged to include Business & Management among your Band A application choices for concurrent consideration. Students at school-based and program-based routes will follow an identical broad curriculum in their first three terms.

International Qualifications

GBUS considers a wide range of international qualifications. Students applying with international qualifications are expected to fulfill the General Admissions Requirements (GAR) and English Language Requirements (ELAR). We do not have any preferred subjects in public examinations as we value the diversity of our students’ backgrounds.

For IB students, an IB score of 41 or above will typically be considered competitive in academic achievement. Apart from your IB score, we also review the overall strength of the application, together with compulsory interviews.

We review the overall strength of the application in addition to the GCEAL/IAL score. In recent years, we admitted students with 3A* or above in GCEAL/IAL.

Yes. If you have extra qualifications, you may include them in your application profile. It will supplement your application and assist the School to review your application holistically.

Your personal statement is all about you as a mature individual. We expect to see in your personal statement your strength, passion, aspiration, significant learning experience, logical thinking, or any information you feel will be of interest to the selection panel. It would be great to learn that you are a good fit with GBUS core values and potential to benefit from, add value, and contribute to our community. There is no restriction on your personal statement with regard to its format, content, length, etc.

CV is a track record of initiatives and achievements that best represent yourself, i.e., leadership, community services, sports, projects, competitions, etc. A one-page highlights your recent and most significant experience and achievements.

No. HKUST does not offer Spring admissions. All students shall start their academic year in September.

GBUS admits students and gives firm or conditional offers on a rolling basis. Thus, we encourage students who are interested in joining us to apply early in the Early Round Application. You do not have to initiate a new application for the Main Round application if you did not hear any results from the Early Round. We will automatically consider your application for the Main Round application.

We start conducting interviews with shortlisted candidates in late November. Interview invitations will be sent to shortlisted candidates on a rolling basis. We usually will arrange a face-to-face interview. In case the candidate could not attend the face-to-face one, an online interview might be an alternative.

Yes, you can still update supporting documents after application submission. Make sure the documents are submitted as early as possible. For documents that are not yet available at the point when the application is submitted, please make sure you indicate the "Expected Upload Date" in the "Supporting Documents" section.

Yes, you can make an appeal to your application result unless you have new evidence of your official academic performance.

Major Selection Exercise

Only students in SBM programs are eligible for MSE. All students, whether admitted through School-based (SBA) or Program-based (PBA) Admission, must join MSE if they want to declare or change their major. Once they have received a major offer, they cannot join MSE again.

Interview priority will go to candidates who put GBUS as their first choice. Putting GBUS as a non-first choice will not be considered if our quota is filled with first-choice candidates. It is also a good indicator of your will and determination to consider GBUS as first among your program choices.

It will be best to apply when your profile is strong. There is no need to rush into this since there are a few MSE cycles for you to enter.

CGA, selected course performance, together with your CV and personal statement, are required for the paper screening for the interview shortlist.

The CGA requirement is 3.0 or above, with C+ above in MATH course (B+ or above in ISOM2500 for those who fail to meet the Math course requirement); and B- or above in LANG 1401/1402 & LANG 1403/1404. There is no definite CGA range we are looking for as long as students pass eligibility and other shortlisting criteria for the interview shortlist.

We start conducting interviews with shortlisted candidates as scheduled by the School. Interview invitations will be sent to shortlisted candidates. We will only arrange a face-to-face interview for MSE candidates. No make-up arrangement will be entertained.

For interviews, there is very little direct preparation you can do. Maybe the group projects and in-class discussions in the courses that you are doing can give you opportunities to gain more experience for the group discussion part of the interview.

We interview many students each round, therefore we will not be able to provide any detailed feedback. Also, please know that we had to prioritize and were unable to accept all good candidates due to the quota. There is no appeal system. For re-application, there is no harm in trying buy you should have realistic expectations. You are suggested to reflect on previous compromising factors: quota, academic results, co-curricular records, and interview performance; and consider whether these factors have tremendously changed.

Yes, you have to submit the online application form together with the personal statement, application fee, and copies of supporting documents onto the Online Application System by the application deadline. Only copies of the supporting documents are required at the application stage. It is strongly recommended that applicants make use of the document uploading function on the online application platform to submit soft copies of documents.

You are required to take TOEFL or IELTS unless your first language is English or your qualification is awarded by a university or an institute where the language of instruction is English. A satisfactory GMAT/GRE is always required for the application of MIMT with CEMS track application while it is optinal for MIMT with Non-CEMS track application. You are advised to have the test scores ready when you submit the application. Otherwise, please schedule your tests as early as possible and put your scheduled test date on the application. In any case, you should submit your scores within one month after the application deadline.

The MIMT Program Office will only process the application with a completed set of supporting documents.

You are required to show the original documents and/or submit the certified true copies, with official imprint and signature, by the issuing authorities when you are admitted to the program.

2. I have already got 2 reference letters from my academic referees. Is it acceptable?

For the academic references, you are required to give us the name and the contact method of the referees in your online application. Once you have submitted your application, the system will send an invitation email to the referees directly and ask them to fill out the references for you on the online application system. We highly recommend you to communicate with your academic referees for their earliest reply. We will only review the application once all the documents have been received. In case the referee did not receive the referee form, you may resend the referee form to them via the system. The referees can upload a scanned copy of the written reference letter as supplementary information. The scanned copy of the written reference letter cannot be used to replace the online reference form.

3. Do I need to possess three (3) languages at the time of application/admission? (CEMS Track Only)

CEMS track students must have three (3) languages, which include English and a 2nd and a 3rd language, in order to graduate. The 2nd language and 3rd language can be any language. Either of these languages is your mother tongue.

CEMS track students entering the program with only two (2) languages must study an equivalent of at least one term of introductory course of a third language at the home term of the MSc program and complete the course successfully before graduation. For the 2nd or 3rd languages you have indicated, please supply us with copies of any documentation that will help prove that you are proficient in your chosen language (e.g. course papers, exam results).

4. Which level should I attain for the 2 nd /3 rd  language? (CEMS Track Only)

The 2 nd language must be at intermediate level while the 3 rd language should be at least at introductory level. Please check out the recognized language examinations at the CEMS website at https://www.cems.org/mim/curriculum/management-business-communication/commercial-language-tests .

5. What means of language proficiency proof will be accepted?

English proficiency and competence are assessed by a recent third-party certification (TOEFL/IELTS) or proof of university medium of instruction in English.

For CEMS track students, the acceptable means of language proof for the 2nd or 3rd languages include: secondary education, university degree, existing CEMS accredited courses, accredited commercial exams, in-house language exam at CEMS schools, or mother tongue. Students who do not possess or cannot provide valid language proof for the 3rd language are required to study a language course at the home term during the MSc program study.

6. Is a minimum GMAT/GRE score required for admission?

We do not have a minimum score requirement. But for the application of MIMT (with CEMS Qualification), a GMAT score of 600 or above is preferred and a GRE score of 310 is preferred.

7. Can the GMAT/GRE requirement be waived?

Applicants are highly recommended to have satisfactory GMAT/GRE score. As applicants come from different academic backgrounds, different education institutions, and different countries of origin, the GMAT/GRE score allows us to assess various applicants’ academic ability for an international program. Extensive research also supports that it is a consistent measure reflecting how well an applicant can handle postgraduate studies, particularly required courses. A satisfactory of GMAT/GRE report is compulsory for MIMT (with CEMS Qualification) applications, while it is optional for MIMT standalone applications.

8. I have not taken the GMAT/GRE yet. Should I submit the application?

You could first submit your application and indicate in the application form your scheduled test date. You are advised to schedule GMAT/GRE within a month after the application deadline. An unofficial GMAT/GRE score report will be available right after the test and please upload the unofficial report onto the online application system.

9. How long is my GMAT/GRE result valid for?

Your GMAT/GRE result is valid for 5 years prior to the commencement of study.

10. Does the University accept GMAT/GRE online test results?

Yes. The University is now accepting the following online test results as alternatives in meeting the admission requirements.

GMAT Online Exam GRE General Test at Home

11. Do I need to submit a TOEFL/IELTS score with my application?  Does the University accept any test alternatives for the English Language admission requirements?

A TOEFL/IELTS score is required if your first language is not English nor your degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was not English.

The University now accepts the following tests to fulfill the regular English language admission requirement:

  • TOEFL - Internet-based Test (iBT)
  • TOEFL - Paper-based Test (pBT)
  • TOEFL - Revised Paper-delivered Test
  • IELTS (Academic Module)

12. Is a minimum TOEFL/IELTS score required for admission?

A satisfactory score in TOEFL or IELTS is required for applicants whose bachelor's degree was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was not English or whose first language is not English.

  • TOEFL score in minimum 80 (iBT); 550 (pBT) or 60 (Revised paper-delivered test)
  • IELTS (Academic Module) overall score in minimum 6.5 (and ALL sub-scores in 5.5 or above)

For CEMS track applicants, TOEFL score of 100 (Internet test) or IELTS score of 7 or above is preferred.

13. How long is my TOEFL/IELTS result valid for?

Prior full-time work experience is not necessary. For CEMS track students, no more than two years of full-time post-qualification work experience is preferred.

We also recognize the vital importance of recruiting a diverse group of students who will both benefit from and contribute to the program. Rather than selecting candidates based on a preconceived formula like academic performance and work experience, students are selected on the basis of their potential for an international career, how they will interact with each other as a group, how the program matches their individual needs and objectives, and the extent to which they are driven by and embrace success.

There is one intake every year. The Fall Term starts in September at the HKUST campus.

The intake is expected to be around 50-55 students.

For a 2-credit course, there are a total of 28 contact hours. There is usually one class per week for each course, so it takes 8 weeks (with the final week allotted for examination) to complete a course of 2 credits.

Yes, but credits for exempted courses have to be replaced by electives. Some courses can be exempted for students who have obtained certain qualifications with proof provided, such as transcripts and syllabi of courses taken within the past 7 years, when the content and level of the previous courses are equivalent to those of the exempted courses and satisfactory grades were achieved. Subject to the approval of the MScMARK Academic Director and the University regulations governing credit transfer, students can apply for course exemption for no more than two courses (4 credits).

We normally do not encourage students to extend their length of study. However, we do offer study extensions for students who cannot complete the program within the defined timeframe because of health reasons. All students must complete the whole program within 5 years.

Yes, students who do not have the right to reside in Hong Kong are required to apply for a student visa for entering into Hong Kong and studying a full-time master degree program. The Program Office will coordinate with the Fok Ying Tung Graduate School to arrange student visas for all incoming students upon admission and prior to the commencement of the program. The duration of the student visa will cover the whole period of study in the program.

Yes, you have to submit the online application form together with the following documents onto the Online Application System by the application deadline.

  • Personal statement
  • Application fee
  • Copies of supporting documents

Only copies of the supporting documents are required at the application stage. It is strongly recommended that applicants make use of the document uploading function on the online application platform to submit soft copies of documents.

For MScMARK, the GMAT or GRE does not serve as mandatory but is highly recommended for application. You are required to take TOEFL or IELTS unless your first language is English or your qualification is awarded by a university or an institute where the language of instruction is English. You are advised to have the test scores ready when you submit the application. Otherwise, please schedule your tests as early as possible and put your scheduled test date on the application. In any case, you should submit your scores within one month after the application deadline.

The MSc MARK Program Office will only process the application with a completed set of supporting documents.

You are required to show the original documents and/or submit the certified true copies, with official imprint and signature, by the issuing authorities when you are admitted to the program.

GMAT is not mandatory for application to MScMARK but highly recommended. We do not have a minimum score requirement. Applicants’ English ability will also be assessed during the interview.

We highly recommend applicants take GMAT/GRE. As applicants come from different academic backgrounds, education institutions, and countries of origin, the GMAT/GRE score allows us to assess their academic ability to participate in an international program. Extensive research also supports the GMAT/GRE as a consistent measure of how well an applicant will handle postgraduate studies, particularly required courses. Both the "GMAT Online Exam" and "GRE General Test at Home" online test results are acceptable.

Applicants’ English level will also be assessed during the interview.

GMAT is not mandatory for application to MScMARK but highly recommended. If you are planning to take GMAT/GRE, you may submit your application and indicate your scheduled test date in the application form. You are advised to schedule the GMAT/GRE within a month after the application deadline. An unofficial GMAT/GRE score report will be available right after the test, please upload the report in the application system for our reference.

Your GMAT/GRE result is valid for 5 years prior to the commencement of study.

A TOEFL/IELTS score is required if your first language is not English or your degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction is not English.

For TOEFL, a score of 550 (paper test) or 80 (Internet test) is required. For IELTS, a minimum score of 6.5 and all sub-score of 5.5 is required.

Your TOEFL/IELTS result is valid for 2 years prior to the commencement of study.

The HKUST MSc MARK program is a one-year full-time pre-experience postgraduate degree program. It is tailor-made for fresh graduates or those with short time working experience after graduation, and who possess multi-cultural aptitudes and aim to take up international leadership positions in their careers.

As two reference letters are required, you should nominate two academic referees who know you well and can inform the University about your academic ability, character and capacity for postgraduate studies.

Yes. Video interviews will be arranged for shortlisted candidates via the internet. Phone interview requests are not accepted.

If you are attending a video interview, you should prepare a personal identity document and the official certificate(s) of your degree/professional qualifications, in addition to any essential supporting documents that you have not provided to the Program Office.

Eligible candidates will be considered for scholarships automatically. Students' eligibility for the scholarship will be assessed after an online application has been submitted and an interview has been conducted on a case by case basis.

Campus Life

On-campus accommodation at HKUST is not available due to heavy demand. Students will have to explore short-term off-campus accommodation. The University's Student Housing And Residential Life Office will help to explore information for short-term off-campus housing options for non-local students.

Details please refer to: https://offcamphouse.ust.hk

We strongly recommend that students have laptops. Those who intend to buy a laptop can join the laptop scheme on campus (discounted sales of laptop computers to students at the beginning of the academic year), though it will take some time before the product can be picked up.

The campus is just 10 minutes’ ride away from the nearest Mass Transit Railway (MTR) station at Hang Hau. A supermarket, banks, bookstore and food outlets are also available on campus. The city center, Central, can be accessed by bus or mini-bus from campus within 45 minutes.
