As the first day of my summer vacations started, I started getting bored easily. Mostly so because all my friends had gone to someplace or the other. My parents noticed this and decided to send me to a summer camp. Our school itself was organizing one in which my parents got me enrolled.

At first, I thought it would be of no use and would be equally boring. However, to my surprise, I was wrong. The summer camp was one of the best experiences of my life. I got the chance to indulge in so many activities and in fact, it was the first time where I discovered my talent for painting.

We got up early in the morning at 7 o’clock, despite no school. We had trainers who would teach us different things each day. On the first day, I got to learn karate, which was very amusing and helpful. Further, I learned how to play sports like basketball , table tennis, and volleyball.

Finally, came my most awaited part. We were taught painting and unique tips to master this art. I learned it quickly and started enjoying painting. My passion for painting began from this summer camp , and I will forever be indebted to it.

My Grandparents’ Place

After my summer camp ended, my whole family decided to visit my grandparent’s village . It is situated away from the city and is full of lush and greenery. I love spending time with my grandparents so I was very excited to visit their village.

We stayed there for over two weeks, and that throughout that time, I was at my best behavior. I used to get up at 7 o’clock in the morning to take a stroll with my grandfather. Then all the family members would get together to have breakfast full of healthy things and fresh fruits from the farm nearby.

In the evening, we would sit by our grandmother’s bed and listen to stories. Then, my siblings and I used to go to the terrace and play games. We would also gaze at their stars all night, as we did not get that in the city.

I spent my mornings in the kitchen with all the ladies of the house, doing preparations for breakfast and lunch. I also helped them clean up the house after the kitchen tasks. In the afternoon, my brother and I took a round of the village and delivered lunch at my uncle’s shop. The rest of the afternoon was spent in slumber after having a heavy diet and loads of gossip.

The evening time in the village was the time for which I waited with a lot of excitement. One evening we went to the village well where women went to fetch drinking water. It was great to see them balance the pots full of water and walk back in a row. But the main treat was to see the confidence and happiness on their faces. The village also encompassed a big playground that used to be full of kids during the evening hours.

Our aunt and uncle also took us to the farm to show us the beautiful process of growing and nurturing fruits and vegetables. Looking at the farmers putting so much effort into their harvest and faces during the harvesting time was a great sight.

I also went to one of the panchayats going on in the village under a banyan tree, where issues of the village were being solved by the elders of the village with the consent of all other people of the village. This is where I witnessed a small example of democracy.

The simplicity of life in the village is where its beauty lies. My visit to the village always teaches me compassion and love towards our family.

We had planned the trip for 5 days. So in the evening of our first day of the trip, we went to the mall road and Jhaku hills which are known as the main tourist spots in the city. In the evening, many different activities are going on there. It was amazing to witness the nightlife of Shimla. We visited the Footloose Discotheque, full of vibrant people and buzzed with great music.

Our next day included traveling on the toy train. This toy train here runs from Kalka to Shimla. There are only 3 such trains in our country, and one of them is here. It’s an amusing experience to travel through them irrespective of the fact that they are slow. The evening was spent doing snow adventures such as skiing and bungee jumping.

The next days were spent visiting places near Shimla, such as Chail, Kufri, and Chitkul. These places can be visited for some snow adventure besides enjoying their beautiful scenic beauty.

Shimla is also a good treat for foodies like me. A bizarre thing about Shimla’s food is – that tiny diners or cafes are offering just fast food, a variety of teas and cold drinks, or fancy eateries that have overpriced alcohol on the menus – there is no ground in between. We had salami burgers at Beekays, which were delicious.

During all these days filled with loads of activities to do, we used to get tired in the evening, but the nightlife there or just staring at the starry sky gave us an immense sense of joy and filled us with new energy. There is enchanting music from tall trees standing upright there, curvy roads that make one look at those beautiful hills from all angles, and that lively breeze that fills one’s soul and heart with ecstasy.

We came back to Delhi after spending five fun-filled days in Shimla. The memory of this trip is fresh in my head. Shimla is indeed the queen of hill stations. I would love to revisit the place.

My parents, siblings, and cousins surrounded me. There was excitement on everyone’s face. Being a full extended family vacation with all my cousins, aunts, and uncles, it seemed super fun from the time we set out in cabs to the airport. It was not my first time being amidst the clouds, but it was my first international flight giving a magnificent view of the night lights of the complete city, and looking at that, I knew that this trip was going to be a one-of-a-kind experience for me.

Landing in Hong Kong, I was taken aback by the mere sight of their airport. I think they lived to the “first impression is the last impression.” I was amazed beyond imagination, but somewhere, I knew this was just the beginning. The first day at this beautiful place mainly consisted of exploring the streets of this breathtaking city, which was rich in fashion, food, tech, and everything that screamed modern and at the same time archaic in their way of life.

The next place we visited was what all of us had dreamed of visiting for a long. It was the mesmerizing Disneyland. The first thing that caught my attention was not the people around dressed in Disney characters or the marvelous expanse of the space and rides and shops but the castle at the far end – The Disney Castle. It was just spectacular. The very charm and enchantment of it knocked me out of breath. The fireworks at night after a complete parade show make you wonder if you had crossed a line and entered the fantasy world. It had been much more than I imagined, even in my make-believe.

The next was a traveling day as we moved to our next destination Malaysia. The City gateway was the complete opposite of where we came from. This city did not have many skyscrapers, but the beautifully spread horizontal city was rich in culture and diversity. The exquisiteness of mosques, museums, and heritage sites perfectly blend with the city’s modern lifestyle and layout. The hilltop parts of the country, like Genting Highlands, could be called heaven on earth. The beaches here offer a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. I am glad we choose this as our last destination during this trip.

This has been one of the best holidays I have ever gone on. I saw so many beautiful places, had great experiences, and spent a lot of time with my loving family. My last summer vacation was indeed the best so far.

Summer vacation is the most awaited time of the year by the students. With almost a year of classes, schedules, tests, and examinations behind them, they look forward to a joyous and relaxed month. Summer vacation could be spent in many ways, depending on your choices and preferences—some like playing and visiting places, while others prefer watching TV and their favorite movies.

I wouldn’t say I like watching TV, even when my parents don’t object. My heart craves the woods and the serenity of nature, away from the hustle-bustle of everyday existence. I have always wanted to visit forests and similar landscapes in the lap of nature.

Below I have narrated a journey to a few places I took during my last summer vacation. Though I returned and joined the school after that, the memories of the journey and the places are deeply engraved in my heart.

The journey started with a visit from my town to my ancestral village and then to a wildlife reserve, which I am sure you too will plan to go on this vacation, after going through my experiences.

At Village with my Grandparents

The journey began on the next day of my summer vacation. My father made these arrangements well in advance, supposedly when I was preparing for my exams. When I came back home after writing my last exam, my mother and sister were already packing for the journey. Though I knew we would visit our grandparent’s village and stay there for a couple of days, I had no idea about the further planned trip.

The journey to the village was smooth. We started well ahead of the train’s arrival time and reached the platform before its arrival time. It is three hours of a train journey from my city to the grandparent’s village, passing through lush green agricultural fields and glimpses of village life.

When we got off the train, I saw my grandfather waving and walking toward us, accompanied by my cousins. After exchanging initial greetings, we walked towards our house a couple of kilometers from the station. Though there is a road to reach the house, we took rather secluded trails, passing through the fields.

Something is mesmerizing about an Indian villages ; the cool breeze, the peace and calm, the smell and sound of cattle, and the distant sound of a pumping set from the fields entices you and makes you cherish every passing moment.

The food, milk, and even water taste much better in the village than in the city. We stayed in the village for four days, during which I met many of my relatives, elders, and friends from the village. I even went to our family’s agricultural field and learned a few tips for farming. Four days passed quickly, and the day soon arrived when we had to move on a further journey. However, it appeared that a few surprises were waiting for me.

Trip to the Dudhwa National Park

When the day arrived, I was in for two surprises firstly, that we were going to “Dudhwa National Park” and secondly that my grandparents were also going with us.

Dudhwa tiger reserve is a protected area spanning over 1280 sq km in Uttar Pradesh. It stretches across the districts of Lakhimpur Kheri and Bahraich, sharing the northeastern boundary with Nepal.

We boarded the train to Bareilly from Varanasi, an unforgettable overnight journey spent with family and like-minded wildlife enthusiasts, traveling to the same destination as us. From Bareilly, we took a connecting train to Dudhwa, which is approximately a distance of 12 kilometers.

We reached the park in the evening and stayed in a simple yet comfortable resort, having all the comforts and basic amenities. The staff was accommodating, and the food was simply delicious. The resort was securely surrounded by forest on all s, use and was well guarded. We fell to sleep listening to the voices of jungle fowls and animals from a distance.

The next morning we all woke up early and got ready for the jungle safari. The forest deforests deforest department organized the safari in anth a guard and an experienced guide onboard. As soon as we entered the forest, we started seeing birds and animals, which we had only seen in books and television. Birds like Bengal Florican and great slaty woodpecker were a delight to watch. Different species of lizards were also seen crawling to cover.

As we progressed deeper, many species of deer- swamp deer, barasingha, and chital came into view. We were also lucky enough to spot barking deer, which is very difficult due to its shy nature. We were lucky enough to spot a tiger lurking in the bushes on our third and last day. With this last sighting, our journey ended, and we headed back home on the same evening.

Summer vacation is the best time in any student’s life. A month or more of a fun time at your disposal is nothing less than a blessing. There are several ways to spend a summer vacation, although we must spend it in such a way that we learn new things and gain new experiences. Also, take care not to harm or disregard anyone during your enjoyment.

We also visited a place called Snow View Point. We went there by a ropeway, which is like a cable car that goes up the mountain. From the top, I could see the snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas. It looked like a picture from a storybook!

Ans: This summer vacation, I planned a trip to Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh with my family. My holiday homework assignments were in math, science, and English. The advent of summer brings hot days and a humid climate. It is really hard for the students to continue school in the scorching heat. Everyone seems to be exhausted due to hot summer days. It is then the school declares summer holidays so that the students and their parents can relax for a few days. Summer vacation is the time of happiness for students as their families plan a trip to a hill station to get rid of the heat.

India is a tropical country that suffers from extreme heat and humidity during March, April, May, and mid of June. The temperature ranges from 32 to 40°C in some states falling in the tropical region. Before the rainy season starts, the scorching sun exhausts everyone. Every day becomes unbearable to go out and meet with the responsibilities. This is why a summer vacation is so important for all family members. We decided to go to Sikkim, one of the best northeastern states in India as a getaway from the summer days.

Sikkim welcomed us with a soothing cool atmosphere. We breathed fresh air after a long time and felt rejuvenated on the very first hour in Gangtok. The place is situated amidst the lower ranges of the Himalaya. The small clouds were hiding the sunrays and gave us the best feel we waited for an entire year. My father booked a hotel with an excellent view. We received a warm welcome from the management and got our rooms to stay in. On that very day, we started to scout the different locations of the capital city.

The next day, we started unwinding our stressful life. We went to Yumthang, a serene valley known for flowers and yaks grazing on the meadows. The best time to visit this place is in March-April. Teesta river flows amidst this valley providing an excellent view. The panoramic view is adorned with snow-capped mountains and green flora. It was then I realized how beautiful Mother Earth can be. This valley is also known as the Valley of Flowers. Rhododendron puts a new colour to this heavenly place.

The next day we proceeded to Tsomgo Lake. It is one of the best glacial lakes in India that provides a beautiful scene. The entire place is covered with snow at a height of 12,400 feet above sea level. The winding roads with hairpin turns took us to this place. The journey was fascinating as we travelled on a car crossing one mountain after the other. The lake was calm and quiet with many people present in the location. Our next destination was Zero Point. It is locally known as Yume Samdong. Located at a height of 15,300 feet above the sea level, this is the last place where people dwell. Beyond this point, there are no roads. It is a valley surrounded by mountains where three rivers meet. The snow here is quite deep. We had difficulty breathing in this place due to its height and lack of oxygen but it passed within a few minutes. It is true that this place resembles the beauty of Switzerland. This is where we enjoyed a lot on the vast snow-capped valley. We made snowballs and threw them.

It was a brilliant adventure. The journey was quite rejuvenating and refreshing for all the family members. We felt sad while returning from Sikkim. I will wait for the next summer vacation to visit this state again.

Moreover, the summer break is long enough for anyone to try something new or continue pursuing their hobbies. Some people also like to travel during their summer break, either to visit relatives or to visit foreign countries and cities. While I do enjoy travelling a lot, unfortunately, I had to spend my last summer vacation at home because I had to wait for the exam results. Nevertheless, I did have an eventful summer vacation!

Learning Piano

I took some time out this summer vacation to learn a new song on the piano. I’ve been playing the piano ever since I was a child, but there have been points when I’ve fallen out of practice. Due to that, I was determined to learn at least one new song in the summer, which I did.

The song I chose to learn was The Truth Untold by the worldwide sensation Korean group BTS . This is because BTS are my role models to work hard and to continue learning more about the world and myself.

Their songs are filled with thoughtful messages of self-love and compassion towards others, and they also sing about several issues pertinent to the youth, such as mental health. I wanted to learn a BTS song because their songs mean a lot to me, and I knew that if I mastered a BTS song on the piano, I would feel rather proud of myself.

The Truth Untold is a primarily piano-based song, so I had plenty to learn from it. It’s a very sad, heartbreaking song about hiding behind a mask and being too afraid to show your real self to the people you love, hurting them and yourself in the process. As a poet, I find this song to be beautifully written and extremely touching, so learning it was a wonderful experience.

Spending Time With My Brother

Since exams were finally done, I wanted to do something I didn’t get to do because I was so busy- get out of my room and spend some time with my little brother. He’s very kind and understanding, so he never nags me when I’m studying. Nevertheless, I felt bad for leaving him so bored with not much to do.

I spent most of my summer days playing or chatting with my brother. When we talk, we never stick to just one topic. He likes to stay updated on what is happening around the world, especially in terms of technology.

Because my brother always tries to be open-minded, he is also a good person to have a conversation with when it comes to discussing serious issues. This also helps me teach him more about some things that he might be confused or misinformed about.

We both love playing video games, so last summer was an opportunity for us to play plenty of Fortnite. We hardly ever play against each other though- it’s a lot more fun to work together. We do, however, play against each other when playing sports games on console, because they incite more competitive energy from both of us.

Waiting for Exam Results

While I did have some great moments in my summer holidays, most of it was filled with tension because I was going to get my final results soon. I was very nervous, and because of that, it was difficult to completely enjoy not having to go to school anymore.

Waiting for your exam results is always a painful and nerve-wracking experience. Sometimes you may want your results to arrive right away so that you can get it over with, and sometimes you don’t want them to arrive at all because you’re too scared to see them.

I regret having wasted so much time just worrying when I could’ve been trying new things or reading more books. When the results finally came, all the worrying felt utterly useless, because it’s not like it would have changed the answers I wrote on my papers. If I could’ve done something differently, I would’ve tried harder not to be so tense and to assure myself that I would end up happy no matter what my marks were.

My summer vacation was really awesome. I spend my time with my family. We went into a summer vacation in Bihar. There is my grandfather home. We spend around 15 days there. I did so many exciting things that I won’t forget ever in my whole life. I met with my grandpa after a long time, I love him very much. We had a great time in the nearest jungle. We went there a few times to do camping and picnic. There is a small hilly river near the jungle. I love that scene a lot. I love to spend my next summer there, again.    

In my last summer vacation, we spend the whole time is a village near Sylhet, Bangladesh, Sylhet is the most beautiful place in the country. I loved spending time there. My father has a good friend here and he was inviting us to visit his place a long time ago. He and his family have visited us a few times. And finally, my father decided to visit his place in the summer vacation. We went there on a journey by train. I love the train journey . The cutest and amazing thing was the tea gardens there. I loved the place so much.

My summer holidays began on the first day, and I quickly became bored, mainly because every single one of my friends had left for elsewhere. Because of this, my parents decided to enrol me in a summer camp. My parents helped me enrol in one that our school was holding on its own.

I initially believed it would be useless and equally dull. To my amazement, I was mistaken. One of my favourite life experiences was summer camp. I had the opportunity to participate in various activities, and it was around this time that I first realised I had a gift for painting.

Despite there being no school, we rose early at 7 a.m. Every day, our trainers would teach us something new. I learned karate on the first day, which was entertaining and beneficial. In addition, I developed my skills in volleyball, table tennis, and basketball. My most anticipated portion finally arrived.

We learned how to paint and were taught unique techniques for mastering this art. I picked it up quickly and began to like painting. I will always be grateful to this summer camp for sparking my interest in painting and other activities.

Because it allows them to unwind and spend time with their loved ones doing activities they enjoy, many individuals look forward to the summer. For relaxation and amusement, many people take summer off from work. All institutions and schools are closed for the summer due to the heat. While some people would rather spend their entire day indoors, others would rather spend time outside. For kids, summer vacation could be a particularly memorable time of year.

Haley Burgdorf’s meteoric rise at St. Charles North will take her to Penn State. A whirlwind? ‘It has been crazy.’

The hardest part for the volleyball standout?

Fitting it all in.

The 6-foot outside hitter for the North Stars may need a vacation from her vacation before classes begin later in August.

“It has been crazy,” she said.

Club ball and a recruiting whirlwind featuring Burgdorf’s announcement Monday that she had committed to a scholarship offer from Big Ten powerhouse Penn State was only the beginning.

She caps her “break” this week with a trip to California to participate in a summer training series with USA Volleyball’s indoor national team development program.

“I’m really excited for the NTDP,” said Burgdorf, the 2023 Beacon-News/Courier-News Player of the Year. “It’s always been a dream of mine, and I’m stoked that I’ll get the opportunity.”

After playing up a level in previous years, Burgdorf played with her own age group this summer and co-captained the Sports Performance 16-Elite team.

“We had not been a solid team for three years,” she said. “But they figured let’s put it all together and see what we can do.”

The team, which features three other Big Ten recruits, finished ninth in the gold division of the AAU Nationals. Benet setter Ellie Stiernagle (Northwestern), Marist libero Elayna Davidson (Maryland) and Minooka outside hitter Brooklynne Brass (Maryland) teamed up with Burgdorf.

Burgdorf, who had “70 something” coaches write to her early in recruiting, could talk to them this summer. She said she spoke with about half.

“It was overwhelming at some point, but I had help from volleyball friends, older players I had played with who helped me out,” Burgdorf said. “Many had been through it and would give me advice and questions I should be asking.”

She attended camps in June at Wisconsin, Indiana and Penn State. Louisville, which she visited last year, was also in her final four.

Before those visits, St. Charles North coach Lindsey Hawkins also was contacted many times.

“When they talk to a player’s high school coach, they’re often actually trying to find out more of what kind of people the kids are outside of volleyball,” Hawkins said. “They have a pretty good idea volleyball-wise from scouting and talking with their club coaches.

“Even when we’re out of season, Haley comes by to visit me in my (English) class every day. She lives and breathes volleyball, is super nurturing, very mature and level-headed. She knows where she wants to go.”

It’s hard to argue with Burgdorf’s decision.

Katie Schumacher-Cawley , a Mother McAuley product who played for legendary Nittany Lions coach Russ Rose , is only the third coach in program history at Penn State.

Rose, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history after 43 years at the school, took teams to the NCAA Tournament the last 41 years on the job. He won seven national titles, second only to Stanford’s nine. Schumacher-Cawley has extended the NCAA appearance streak to 43.

“Playing in the Big Ten has always been a goal,” Burgdorf said. “It’s a whole nother level. That streak is amazing.”

Burgdorf has had an impressive start in high school, finishing second on the team with 261 kills as a freshman. Last season, she led St. Charles North with 344 kills and 190 digs.

She also had to step up into a bigger leadership role after Maryland recruit Katherine Scherer and two other senior starters were all lost for the season to injuries during a one-week span.

Burgdorf, Scherer and 2016 graduate Daley Krage (USC) are now three Power Five recruits in Hawkins’ 15 seasons guiding the North Stars.

“It’s loads of fun to see how the top 5% get recruited,” Hawkins said. “It was quite a month of marketing and talking.

“It’s always fun to turn on the TV and see players you’ve coached or coached against, and it will be fun to watch Katie and Haley playing each other.”

I used to think summer vacations should be a time to not think. Turn off the brain, tune out and drop off the map was the idea. Read a mystery novel or biography. Take a dip in a different pool. And above all, don't follow the news cycle or get tethered to the goings-on back at the office.

Some of this I still believe (like disconnecting from the office). But these days I have a different take. I now see vacations and travel as unparalleled opportunities to observe trends, and to understand how the accelerating pace of change is affecting us in what is being called the "Age of Acceleration."

I love asking people what they like to read while on vacation. This question came up yesterday as I was talking with the CEO of a global trade association that I am going to facilitate a strategic thinking session for. "My wife was reading Kristin Hanna’s “ The Women ” and I was reading Ray Kurzweil’s " The Singularity is Nearer ," he confessed. Both were happy, he reported, adding that he finds it stimulating to read a book about the future on the beaches of Atlantic City because being in a relaxed state can inspire you to think big.

Vacations and time away can help us reflect on changes in our own lives. Normally we cruise, mostly on autopilot, through its seasons but then things hit us. Face to face, we notice and contemplate changes in the lives of our family members and friends, and catch up on what they are dealing with, what's bringing them joy, and their concerns about the state of the nation.

Vacations can throw us insights that don't get stimulated otherwise. Tied as we all are to hectic routines - even retired people tell me how busy they are — our regular lives often become a blur of deadlines, duties (get the kids off to school), and decisions (when should I retire, should I get out of the stock market before it crashes, who can restore America, should I get my MBA, etc.). Vacations can, if we allow them, become a pattern interrupt.

This summer my wife and I visited our nephew and his family in suburban Washington, D.C. While this was not really a vacation (I was on my way to a speaking engagement), I never miss the opportunity to visit people in their homes and seeing how they are living their lives. On their refrigerator were five or six wedding invitations - a Millennial trend. "That's all we do is go to weddings. Our vacations this year are all destination weddings," he tells me over a beer.

This summer my wife and I also visited dear friends from our college days. They'd just returned from a three-week trip to Italy, Scotland, and Ireland. When I asked Bob, who has been a pal in high school and a roommate in college, what he enjoyed most about their journey, it wasn't the Colosseum, The Forum, or wandering the streets of Dublin, all of which they enjoyed.

Instead, it was a 13-month-old "bundle of joy" nestled in a baby backpack on the shoulders of a young couple in their group. There were four or five generations on the trip, Bob observed, and that made the conversations much livelier than with a group of all retired folks, who tend to talk about aches and pains and how hard it is to get a good night's sleep.

"The Italians love babies and families, so we got attention everywhere we went," he added.

Politics is another fun conversation to have with people, but you must be careful. My wife and I were relaxing in a bubbling jacuzzi at a roadside motel when we struck up a conversation with a 60-ish couple from Redondo Beach, California. They were both high school teachers, and were planning to retire in three years. "Then we're moving to Colorado where we can live less expensively," said the husband. "Even Oregon and Washington are getting too expensive," his wife added.

Were it just idling conversation, such insights might go in one ear and out the other. But because I'd recently heard an economist at a conference discussing the exodus from the Golden State, I realized they were part of a growing trend. How many more retiring Boomers will leave the state over the next decade and what will be the impact?

Not only do we need to look ahead of the curve, but we’ve also got to think and act ahead of the curve, to adapt to an ever-shifting reality and thrive.
