I n November 2015, STAT was launched as a new national media brand focused on health, medicine, and life sciences. Since then, we have grown to be the authoritative and trustworthy news media source in the industry and our all-star team of editors and reporters have won numerous journalism awards, including being named as a 2021 Pulitzer finalist. The STAT brand includes a website, mobile app, numerous newsletters, live and virtual events, and other products. STAT is affiliated with Boston Globe Media Partners but is independent from The Boston Globe.

Job Description STAT, the leading health and science site, is looking for a general assignment reporter who can do it all: jump on breaking news, whip up smart enterprise stories, force institutions to answer tough questions, and deliver compelling profiles. Part of the job will by its nature include coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic, but we’re also looking for a utility player — a candidate who can range widely across topics related to health and science. That might mean reporting on Covid one week and heart disease the next. This reporter will excel at writing about research, and be capable of translating complicated science into crystal-clear prose. Lastly, this reporter should come with ideas, while also being eager to take on assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Tell smart, compelling stories about health and science, with special attention to groundbreaking technologies and the people behind them.
  • Be a key player on a top-notch team producing deep and vital reporting of the life sciences industry.
  • Stand ready, along with others on staff, to sub in on our newsletters from time to time.

Qualifications

  • A versatile reporter with at least five years experience covering health and science issues.
  • A self-starter when it comes to stories, but also collaborative in nature. STAT thrives on a tight-knit, all-hands-on-deck culture and a strong team dynamic.
  • Committed to excellence in your reporting.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

Compensation/Location

The minimum salary for this position is $70,000. We offer a competitive benefits package, including health insurance, a 401k plan, generous vacation, and more. We also provide Care.com back-up care and have numerous wellness offerings, including free access to HeadSpace for all full time employees.

While we’d prefer you to be based in Boston, we also are considering remote candidates who would be willing to spend time at HQ once Covid recedes.

STAT is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace . We strive to create a culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates all voices. A staff that reflects the world around us makes for better — and more accurate — journalism.

The reporter will file content in a timely fashion and take ownership of the presentation of material online — writing strong headlines, seeking out or creating accompanying art and multimedia and thinking of ways to optimize on social platforms.

The reporter may also play a role with some community-facing events and engagement efforts on behalf of the news organization.

Responsibilities

Produce between three to six news stories per week. Communicate about technical topics, or those steeped in the procedure, process and bureaucracy attached to government and education. Serve as a watchdog for the Montclair community, making government more transparent and holding power to account — questioning assumptions and seeking out answers that aren’t freely or easily given. Conceive, source and pitch stories that will engage readers, answering pressing questions. Develop and cultivate sources and engage in investigative reporting. Commit to principles of diversity, equity and inclusion, with practical application to day-in, day-out community journalism. Take ownership of the presentation of material online — writing strong headlines, seeking out or creating accompanying art and multimedia and positioning it on social platforms. Play a role in some community-facing events and engagement efforts on behalf of Montclair Local. Participate as a member of the reporting team by contributing to brainstorming sessions, coverage plans and meetings. Coordinate with editors and journalists for maximum reach across our platforms. Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

A minimum of five years journalism reporting experience. Experience covering local government and/or education issues. A sound understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure. An ability to cultivate sources to break news and drive coverage that differentiates our organization from competitors. Experience covering breaking news, public safety and court reporting. An ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately Demonstrated commitment to an equity lens in every aspect of reporting Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking Experience with content management systems and social media channels. Insights into how education, government and other beat reporting can engage the principles described above.

Ex-Cornell Student Sentenced to 21 Months for Making Antisemitic Threats

Patrick Dai admitted to posting messages in which he threatened to stab, rape and behead Jewish people.

A dark blue police cruiser is parked in front of a blue building with a sign reading “The Center for Jewish Living.”

By Ed Shanahan

A former Cornell University student was sentenced to 21 months in prison on Monday after admitting that he had posted a series of online messages last fall, shortly after the war in Gaza began, in which he threatened to stab, rape and behead Jewish people.

The former student, Patrick Dai , pleaded guilty in April to posting threats to kill or injure another person using interstate communications.

In addition to the prison term, Judge Brenda K. Sannes of Federal District Court in Syracuse sentenced Mr. Dai, 22, to three years of supervised release after he leaves prison, according to court documents.

Carla B. Freedman, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York, said in a statement that Mr. Dai’s threats had “terrorized the Cornell campus community for days and shattered the community’s sense of safety.”

“My office will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute threats and acts of violence motivated by antisemitism and by hatred of any kind,” she added.

Mr. Dai, who is originally from Pittsford, N.Y., has been held in the Broome County Jail since being arrested shortly after he posted the threats in October, and his lawyer, Lisa Peebles, had asked in a court filing that he be sentenced to the roughly 10 months he had already served.

Federal judge in Texas expands ruling that blocks Biden administration protections of LGBTQ students

The decision in the case brought by the Texas Attorney General preempts any future Title IX regulations that extend federal protections to LGBTQ students.

Scenes from Austin Pride 2024 on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, at on Congress Ave in Austin. The day-long celebration featured drag performances, booths and floats of Austin’s businesses and many Texans clad in rainbow.

Sign up for The Brief , The Texas Tribune’s daily newsletter that keeps readers up to speed on the most essential Texas news.

A Texas federal judge this month ruled that the Biden administration had acted unlawfully in interpreting Title IX to prohibit discrimination against LGBTQ students. The ruling preempts any future action by the Education Department to prohibit discrimination in educational settings on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Judge Reed O’Connor’s Aug. 5 decision broadened an earlier ruling in June that struck down specific Biden administration rules intended to expand protections to LGBTQ students.

O’Connor, a President George W. Bush appointee, said the Biden administration overstepped its authority and that any new guidelines that expanded anti-discrimination protections to LGBTQ students would be illegal.

“To allow Defendants’ unlawful action to stand would be to functionally rewrite Title IX in a way that shockingly transforms American education and usurps a major question from Congress,” O’Connor wrote in his Aug. 5 opinion.

“That is not how our democratic system functions,” he wrote, adding that, “the Department lacks authority to redefine sex in a way that conflicts with Title IX.”

The statute at the center of the lawsuit — and the clash it reflects between Texas legislation and federal anti-discrimination protections — is Title IX, a 1972 law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs and activities.

In 2021, the Biden administration said that Title IX protects LGBTQ students after the Supreme Court ruled in 2020 that Title VII of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bars employment discrimination on the basis of sex, applies to gay and transgender workers as well.

That same year, the Texas Legislature passed a law that bans transgender children in K-12 public schools from playing on sports teams that are aligned with their gender.

The Texas Attorney General’s office sued the federal government in 2023 for its interpretation of Title IX, arguing that noncompliance with the Biden administration’s rules put Texas schools at risk of losing federal funding.

The Aug. 5 decision came after Texas asked the federal court to clarify the scope of its June ruling and to preclude any implementation of Title IX that extended protections to LGBTQ students.

“This is a major win for protecting Texas and its students from any future attempt by the federal government to impose its unlawful interpretation of Title IX that puts women and girls at risk,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton posted on social media. “The Biden Administration has waged war on women’s rights by subverting the Title IX protections they are entitled to in school and in sports.”

The Biden administration issued revised Title IX rules in April that cemented federal protections for LGBTQ students and reversed a number of Trump-era policies that determined how schools should respond to cases of alleged sexual misconduct. Those rules have been temporarily blocked in 26 states, including Texas, due to ongoing litigation.

'We are working hard:' Officials say about Tropical Storm Debby efforts in Bryan County

Bryan County, the city of Richmond Hill and the city of Pembroke held a press conference Wednesday afternoon to discuss the impact and response efforts to Tropical Storm Debby.

Bryan County Commissioner Carter Infinger kicked off the presser by ensuring the public that local officials are on top of things.

"We are working hard," said Infinger. "You may not see us out there in the community but we are working behind the scenes a lot, some in the streets and some in the neighborhoods – we’ve been there. We are working as hard as we can to get things back to normal."

Thomas Moore, deputy director for Emergency Management for Georgia Emergency Management Agency, said GEMA has been in the county since Aug. 4.

“We had people on the ground here when it hit,” said Moore. “The field coordinators are the people that do the bulk of the work. GEMA has been on the ground the whole time.”

According to Chuck Ray, director of field operations at GEMA, six teams will be on the ground assessing the damage and will report back to the Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator who will then send a letter to Gov. Brian Kemp who will forward it on to President Joe Biden.

“We have been assessing damages to the storm ever since the water began to recede,” said Ray. “We were able to get enough numbers to our federal partners that we need their assistance. As soon as a decision is made from the presidential level on an individual assistance declaration, we will get the word out to the property owners and start that process.”

Marcus Sack, city engineer for Richmond Hill and president and CEO of M.E. Sack Engineering, said pumping could not begin until some of the water levels decreased.

“We started collecting water levels early Saturday morning,” said Sack. “We have used that data to be able to predict where the water will recede first. We have used that data to make important decisions like where to deploy pumps. Pumping operations are still going on. Originally, we did not start pumping because there was too much water.”

Residents in Richmond Place have seen water levels decrease but flooding remains an issue in the White Oak neighborhood.

“They are going to start pumping water out of there but it is still going to be a few days,” said Infinger. “We are still fighting with the Canoochee River and Ogeechee River, all the water coming down. That water should start receding at any time, if not already. I believe it is starting to go down, last I heard, a little bit in some of those places.”

Richmond Hill Mayor Russ Carpenter thanked the volunteers who have worked tirelessly to help their neighbors.

“We live in a phenomenal community," said Carpenter. "We have had people show up with trucks, boats and sandbags. These are the kind of people that are in the community."

Olympics photographers on what it takes to shoot the paris games — and that viral snoop dogg pic.

Léon Marchand at the Paris Olympic Games on July 31.

There seems to be something for everyone at this summer’s Olympic Games — there’s Simone Biles and Snoop Dogg , a pommel horse king and a rugby queen. Even Olympic veterans are saying this year feels different.

Plus, for a photographer, Paris has always been easy on the eyes. “Sense of place is something we think about with photography all the time,” Meyer says, and points to the images of beach volleyball players beneath the Eiffel Tower. “Paris is such an iconic city with such beautiful architecture and landscapes.”

Photographers on the ground for the games are tasked with capturing all the action. For first timers like Arturo Holmes, the job felt a bit overwhelming at first. Holmes is a Getty red carpet photographer whose skills have taken him to the Super Bowl, the Met Gala, the Oscars and beyond — but he says these games are “on a whole different level.”

“You have to go within yourself to find the drive and the motivation to keep finding a key moment, navigating through all the tourists, [bouncing around] from different venues,” Holmes says of the initial overwhelm. He landed on his feet fairly quickly, though, after snapping a photo of Snoop Dogg that went viral.

“That kind of put the battery back,” he says. In a major win, France President Emmanuel Macron shared the shot on social media, and Holmes found himself validated: “I see that I didn’t make the wrong decision choosing photography as a profession, dropping out of school, I was meant for this. I was ready.”

Meyer finds similar reward in her sports photography. “There’s a lot of intensity to it, a lot of emotion,” she says.

Meyer is covering aquatics this summer, shooting swimming, artistic swimming, diving and water polo. “The water is kind of another subject or character in all these images,” she says. “Incorporating the water, showing the environment they’re in, and the movement of water around the athletes, can be really beautiful [and] also a really powerful tool to illustrate the athleticism of these athletes.”

Meyer captures athletes underwater with robotic cameras, which they control remotely from the pool deck. Ahead of competition, she’ll research her assignment to know the sport’s key players and races to watch for, as well as any safety concerns.

“From there, I like to leave a little bit to my imagination,” she says. “I do think some of the magic of really special and creative photography comes from seeing something new.”

After that, Meyer uses ethernet cables placed at either side of the pool to send photos from her camera to an editing team in London, where they are touched up and then uploaded to the Getty Images database where subscribing news outlets – THR included — can use the shots in their reporting.

Getty’s photographers are salaried employees, so they are not paid per photo. “It’s a stock agency, it’s important to have volume,” Meyer says, “but nobody’s over my shoulder counting… there’s a lot of trust in photographers.” If anything, pressure can seep in from surrounding press.

“The energy can feel a little bit frantic if you’re in a media room filled with 100 photographers,” she says. “But the good news is that once the event starts, it’s so loud and chaotic that it’s almost kind of quiet. Once you get used to it, it’s just white noise.”

But surrounded by those other cameras, what do you focus on? Meyer says she thinks of her mom. “She’s not a big sports person, but she loves me, and cares what I’m up to,” she says. “So I read things like, ‘OK, what is special about this to somebody who isn’t here and might not care that much?'”

On red carpets and in the stands, Holmes watches for details. “I’m an emotional shooter,” he says. “I’m looking for emotion, I’m looking for smiling, I’m looking for intense stares, I’m looking for hugs.”

Both photographers say part of their ability to rise to that challenge comes from their colleagues.

“I definitely try to build a rapport with the photographers that are to the left and right of me, behind me,” Holmes says. “When you have a good relationship, your job can be a lot easier.”

“I feel really inspired by the people I’m working with,” Meyer says — both the photographers and the subjects. “My motivation is not about ‘I’m here,’ but, ‘They are here.’ These athletes are here and I take that responsibility seriously. Let me show you what they’ve worked for.”

This, to Meyer, is the heart of why she keeps returning to the Olympics. “I’m going to photograph divers tomorrow. Most people don’t know their names, but I’m positive they’ve been working most of their entire life to get to this moment,” she says. “I have some pictures of swimmers smiling underwater because they’re just so happy to be here. Some are able to come to multiple Olympics, but for a lot of them, it’s a one-shot deal.”

Her pun on that last line may or may not be intended. Either way, she’ll be there, camera poised for capture.
