Teaching Reading Skills Reading is a receptive speech activity and one of communicative aims in teaching-learning foreign languages.

Strategies for Reading Comprehension • Identify the purpose of reading. • Use grapheme rules and patterns to aid in bottom-up decoding(for beginning level learners). • Use efficient silent reading techniques for relatively rapid comprehension (for intermediate to advanced levels). • Skimming and scanning • Semantic mapping or clustering • Guessing • Vocabulary analysis

Types of Classroom Reading Performance • Intensive reading • Extensive reading

Intensive reading Intensive reading, analogous to intensive listening, is usually a classroom-oriented activity in which students focus on the linguistic or semantic details of a passage.

Extensive Reading • Skimming • Scanning • All kinds of pleasure reading

Reading Activities • Pre-reading activities • While-reading activities • Post-reading activities • Combining activities

Pre-Reading Activities Learners may be prepared for the text in various ways depending on the type of text and the level of the learners.

While-Reading Activities • deducing meaning • questioning • recognising • matching • ordering • following instructions • comparing • note-taking • completing • decision-making/problem-solving

Post-Reading Activities Learners react in a personal way to the text, relating it to their own opinions, feelings and experience in activities which may involve discussion and the creation of new texts. Reading texts also lend themselves to further exploitation for grammar and vocabulary practice.

Combining Activities • Pre-reading phase • While-reading phase • Post-reading phase It is not suggested that learners complete all of these activities. They are offered as some options from which learners and teachers can choose.

Principles for Designing Interactive Reading Techniques • In an interactive curriculum, make sure that you don't overlook the importance of specific instruction in reading skills. • Techniques should be intrinsically motivating. • Techniques should utilize authentic language and contexts. • Encourage the development of reading strategies. • Include both bottom-up and top-down techniques. • Consider subdividing your techniques into pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading phases.

The NPR Network will be reporting live from Chicago throughout the week bringing you  the latest on the Democratic National Convention .

Delegates to the Democratic National Convention held a ceremonial — and celebratory — roll call vote to mark what they’d already made official earlier this month with a virtual vote: Vice President Kamala Harris’ selection as the party’s presidential nominee.

The unconventional roll call was facilitated by a DJ, with a unique songs playing as the call moved from state to state. "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd for Alabama, for example.

Here's what song each state chose.

Florida's song was "Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty (possibly a snarky reference to the Never Back Down, Inc., super PAC, set up to encourage Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis' unsuccessful presidential candidacy?).

Loud cheers went up from the convention crowd as the voting moved from state to state. Participants announced their support for Harris and Walz, and touted their individual states' accomplishments, including the Hawaii delegation, which noted its status as the birthplace of former President Obama, and Illinois, where Obama won the first victory of his presidential campaign in the 2008 caucuses.

Several high-profile Democrats who’d been discussed as potential running mates for Harris participated in the roll call, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Participants also called attention to key issues of importance to Democratic voters, including reproductive rights and gun violence. Representing Nevada was a survivor of the October 1, 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting .

Cecile Richards, the former president of Planned Parenthood and daughter of the late former Texas Gov. Ann Richards, introduced Kate Cox, a Texas woman who became a Democratic activist after being turned away for an abortion under Texas law.

The count wrapped up with a nod to the candidates’ home states — California for Harris and Minnesota for her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz.

Cornell Hospitality Pitch Deck Competition Official Rules and Guidelines

The Leland C. and Mary M. Pillsbury Institute for Hospitality Entrepreneurship at the Cornell Nolan School of Hotel Administration sponsors the Cornell Hospitality1 Pitch Deck Competition. This competition is an experiential learning opportunity for student entrepreneurs contemplating, starting, or operating an early-stage venture who are looking to improve their pitching skills with the potential to earn seed funding for their venture.

Students register for the competition in early fall and submit their pitch decks in October for review by a team of industry judges. Four finalists will be selected to present in November to a panel of industry judges. The winning team will be awarded a prize of $3,000, second place will be awarded a prize of $1,500, and the third place team will be awarded a prize of $500. **All prizes subject to tax withholding as required by IRS regulations.

Team Eligibility Criteria

• Teams consisting of no more than two full-time Cornell University undergraduate and/or graduate students are eligible. At least one the member of each team must be a Nolan School of Hotel Administration student.
• Students must be in good academic standing (i.e., GPA not less than 2.0).
• Students may be members of only one team.
• For finalists to be eligible to win, all team members must be present for the final presentations.
• Teams are encouraged to seek advice and counsel from successful entrepreneurs, professionals, and experts, but teams must present only their own work product.

The Cornell University Honor Code applies to all aspects of the Competition

  Requirements for the Business Idea

• The objective of the Pitch Deck Competition is to provide an experiential learning opportunity to student entrepreneurs looking to practice pitching a hospitality business idea. As such, most ideas entered in the Competition will be ideas for new independent ventures in the seed, start-up, or early growth stages. Generally excluded are the following: buy-outs, expansions of existing companies, real estate syndications, tax shelters, franchises, licensing agreements for distribution in a different geographical area, and spin-outs from existing corporations. Licensing technologies from universities or research labs is allowed, assuming they have not been commercialized previously.
• Ideas should be drawn from the hospitality sector. For the purpose of this Competition, “hospitality” is purposefully broadly defined and includes businesses providing support services to the hospitality industry (e.g., businesses such as Micros Systems that provide software and hardware to restaurant and lodging businesses).
• The hospitality business ideas pitched may be for both for-profit and non-profit ventures.

  Other Requirements

• All author(s) of the pitch decks must agree that the work they are submitting is their original work. The author(s) will retain all rights to the pitch decks regarding its use at all times prior to and following the Competition.
• By participating in the Competition, author(s) give the Competition organizers the right to post the pitch decks and/or videos on a password protected website in order for reviewers/judges to access the items, post comments, and assign numerical scores to the submitted items based on an established rubric.
• Finalists are required to sign a waiver allowing the Pillsbury Institute the express right to photography, videotape, record, live-stream, and otherwise disseminate their Pitch Deck Presentation, and all finalist author(s) will be asked to sign a photo/video release form allowing Cornell University to use the Pitch Deck Presentation recording and Pitch Deck Presentation materials within the University for faculty, staff, students, and the Pillsbury Institute for educational purposes. In addition, final presentation videotapes may be posted on the Nolan School of Hotel Administration website for public consumption.
• Finalists are required to sign a money allocation agreement prior to the Pitch Deck Final Presentation. The agreement is meant to prevent any possible disagreements regarding division of money amongst team members after the competition winners are announced.
• Non-confidentiality: Some aspects of the competition, including but not limited to oral presentations and question/answer sessions, are open to the public at large. Any and all of these sessions may be broadcast to interested persons through media, which may include radio, television and the Internet. Any data or information discussed or divulged in public sessions by entrants should be considered information that could possibly enter the public realm, and entrants should not assume any right of confidentiality in any data or information discussed, divulged, or presented in these sessions. Due to the nature of the competition, we are not able to ask judges, reviewers, staff, or the audience to agree to or sign non-disclosure statements. However, the Pillsbury Institute will make every effort to limit distribution of pitch decks presented at the competition. We cannot guarantee that other individuals will not obtain access to electronic or hard copies of the pitch deck. The Pitch Deck Final Presentation, whether in person or virtual, will be open to the public and will be recorded.  Attendance by media personnel is expected and final presentations will be posted on the Nolan School of Hotel Administration website for public consumption.
• Copyrights & Permissions: If a team uses copyrighted materials and/or images from a third-party in their presentation or business plan, they must obtain permission and authorization in advance from the owners to use this material.

Pitch Deck Competition Guidelines

  Building a pitch deck is one of the best ways to grab your audience’s attention and answer key questions about your business idea. Pitch decks help people to understand, care about, and take action. Two of the most common types of pitch decks are reading decks and presentation decks. Reading decks are documents that can be read and understood without the author present. Presentation decks serve as visual support for an entrepreneur’s presentation. This competition provides students the opportunity to experience creating both types of pitch decks.

The first round of the competition requires students to prepare a Reading Pitch Deck. Submissions are due by Noon EST on October 13, 2023 . Please submit via Reviewr and name your file using the following format: ReadingDeck_TeamName.pdf

Four teams will be selected to compete as Finalists. Teams will be notified of whether they are invited to advance in the Competition by October 24, 2023 .

Finalist will submit a Presentation Pitch Deck prior the Pitch Deck Competition Finals on Sunday, November 5, 2023 by 5:00 p.m. EST .

Reading Pitch Deck Guidelines

Decks must be limited to 11 slides. Participants should determine how best to communicate their business idea. Do not embed links, include text in the notes field, or include appendices. Teams that do not follow these rules will be disqualified.

  Presentation Pitch Deck Guidelines

Presentation Pitch Decks are limited to 11 slides and up to 5 Q&A slides. Each invited team is required to submit a Presentation Pitch Deck and may choose to submit an updated Reading Deck no later than Sunday, November 5, 2023 by 5:00 p.m. EST .

The Reading Pitch Deck can be in PDF form, but the Presentation Pitch Deck should be in PowerPoint. Electronic copies should be submitted via Reviewr and should be named according to the following format:

• FinalReadingDeck_TeamName.pdf
• PresentationDeck_TeamName.ppt

Any team that does not submit their materials by this date will be disqualified.

Oral Presentation Guidelines

  The Final Presentations will be delivered to a panel of judges in front of a live audience. The teams in the Final Presentations will have 10 minutes to present their hospitality business idea followed by a 5-minute question and answer session from the panel of judges. Teams can assume that the judges have read their Reading Pitch Decks. Once a team has finished its presentation, it may observe both the presentation and Q&A session of the teams that follow it. Teams may NOT observe other presentations until after they have made their own presentations. The order of presentation will be determined randomly.

Detailed scheduling for the Final Presentations will be provided to the teams later in the Competition. The Final Presentation Pitch Deck will be loaded onto a USB to be used during the Final Presentation. Teams may also demonstrate a prototype of their product during the Final Presentation (including a food sample if that is the product). They may NOT bring other materials for the judges such as handouts, etc. Teams are NOT REQUIRED to use materials in the Final Presentation.

The results of the competition will be announced during a reception immediately following the Pitch Deck Final Presentations.

Judges and Judging Criteria

  Judges for the competition will be comprised of faculty, alumni, investment professionals, venture capital and private equity investors, and entrepreneurs.

Judges will score the teams’ deliverables using their judgment with respect to specific competition criteria, as summarized below. The teams receiving the highest collective scores on the Reading Pitch Deck will advance to the Final Round. The winner of the Competition will be determined by the Final Presentation judges’ ranking of the teams. These rankings will be based on the judges’ assessment of both the Reading Pitch Deck and the Final Presentation (including Presentation Pitch Deck). The competition is intended to simulate the real-world process of entrepreneurs soliciting start-up funds from early-stage investors. Advisors are available to teams through the Pillsbury Institute’s Entrepreneur in Residence program.  Teams must provide all advisors with the competition’s advisor guidelines (i.e., the “dos and don’ts”).  Teams must also report the names of their advisors when submitting deliverables.

• Do respond to questions and concerns from teams.
• Do read and give constructive feedback on each aspect of the Reading Pitch Deck.
• Do suggest other resources or individuals with whom teams can consult.
• Do identify weaknesses in the hospitality business idea that may concern investors and suggest ways of dealing with these concerns.

Don’ts: Activities that are Discouraged

• Don’t write or re-write any part of the Reading or Presentation Pitch Deck. These documents should be the work product of team members only.
• Don’t substantially steer the development of the hospitality business idea or take leadership of the team.
• Don’t, if advising more than one team, discuss information about or your advisory activities for one team with the other team.
• Don’t discuss the team’s work with individuals involved in judging the Competition.
• Don’t distribute the Reading or Presentation Pitch Deck to others without permission of the team or use the information or hospitality business ideas in it for purposes other than acting as an advisor in the Competition.

Harris to Lay Out Economic Message Focused on High Cost of Living

Vice President Kamala Harris will unveil the central planks of her economic agenda on Friday in Raleigh, N.C., during her first major policy speech, focusing on how she plans to fight big corporations and bring down costs on necessities like food, housing and raising children.

Ms. Harris’s proposals for her first 100 days in the White House include efforts to combat price gouging at the grocery store , jump-start the construction of more affordable housing, restore an expanded tax credit for parents and lower the cost of prescription drugs, according to a briefing document released by her campaign. She will call for a tax incentive to build starter homes, seek to cap the cost of insulin at $35 for all Americans and attempt to reduce the cost of health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

Taken together, her plan represents more of a reboot of President Biden’s economic policy than a radically fresh start — a new sales pitch focused on its most popular aspects, not a new vision. Many of the policies reiterate or build on proposals in Mr. Biden’s most recent presidential budget. Harris campaign officials released scattered details, leaving key questions unanswered — like the income cutoff for families to qualify for a new $6,000 child tax credit for newborns, or what exactly would qualify as grocery-store “price gouging” under a federal ban.

Campaign officials did not detail how Ms. Harris would pay for her spending and tax-cut proposals in their release ahead of the speech. But they said her overall plan would reduce projected federal deficits, like Mr. Biden’s latest budget proposed to do, largely by “asking the wealthiest Americans and largest corporations to pay their fair share.”

In terms of emphasis, her speech is expected to shift away from Mr. Biden’s focus on job creation, particularly in manufacturing, and more toward reining in the cost of living.

And she will also try to paint a strong contrast against former President Donald J. Trump, describing him as a friend to billionaires and chief executives who will not help the middle class. Ms. Harris has been attacking Mr. Trump’s proposal to impose new tariffs of up to 20 percent on all imported goods, saying it would amount to a tax increase on working families.

Former President Donald Trump sparked near universal criticism last week when he said that the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award, was “much better” than the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for military valor. Trump made these comments during an event at his Bedminster, New Jersey, estate about anti-Semitism, in which he was drawing attention to the work of Miriam Adelson—the widow of his friend, the casino magnate and megadonor Sheldon Adelson—who received the Medal of Freedom from Trump in 2018. Trump’s bizarre logic was that many recipients of the Medal of Honor are in “bad shape” because of their wounds or receive the award posthumously, and that the Medal of Freedom is better because a “healthy, beautiful woman” like Miriam Adelson can receive it.

During the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I wrote numerous citations for valor awards. Discerning whether actions such as rescuing a friend from an ambush or assaulting an enemy position or leading a daring raid are worthy of a Silver Star, Navy Cross, or, possibly, the Medal of Honor is a unique challenge. The first time I had to write up a valor award, I was a 24-year-old Marine second lieutenant in Fallujah. We had been in sustained house-to-house combat for two weeks when a directive came down from our higher headquarters to begin writing up our awards. The battle wasn’t even over. Marines were still getting killed. Nevertheless, the sergeants and corporals in my platoon scribbled their recommendations on pieces of paper and I wrote them up between firefights on our company’s single laptop, a Toughbook we kept charged with a gas-powered generator.

My company commander at the time—a captain who, at the age of 30, seemed infinitely old and wise to me—explained his philosophy of writing awards. He suggested that if I couldn’t figure out whether a Marine deserved a Bronze Star, Silver Star, or something even higher, I should imagine the day in the future when we would all stand in formation at the award’s presentation. He encouraged me to aim for as high a valor award as possible, so long as no one standing in formation would snicker under their breath that the award wasn’t deserved. This proved sound advice, which I hewed to over the years.

Valor awards recognize what was, likely, one of the worst days of someone’s life. This is particularly true if a person is being written up for the highest awards—the Silver Star, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, or Medal of Honor. These are not given after a mission where everything went right and everyone came home.

The process of approving these awards is arduous, and each of the services handles it a little bit differently. The Marine Corps requires a “summary of action,” a lengthy document that outlines in detail what occurred and why it merits the award. This is followed by multiple witness statements from those who saw the actions of the awardee—many a hero has gone unsung because no survivors existed to write these witness statements. Once all of this documentation is gathered, it goes into an awards packet, which then circulates through a labyrinthine bureaucracy; at every level of command, the award is either recommended for approval, downgraded, or, in some cases, upgraded. The nomination first travels to a battalion-level awards board. If approved, it goes to the regiment. The process repeats as it circulates up to division, and, in the case of the Marine Corps, to the Marine Expeditionary Force awards board, and then onward to Headquarters Marine Corps, followed by the Offices of the Secretaries of the Navy and Defense, and then the White House. Awards boards meet only periodically, so this process can take years. Valor awards are not bestowed by fiat.

In the case of the Medal of Honor, recipients enter a special fraternity. They become the embodiment of American valor, living tributes to the heroism that exists deep in our national character. This is a heavy burden, a celebrity that, for many, exacts a cost and becomes a second type of service. Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of the Second World War and a Medal of Honor recipient, struggled until his death with his own mental health and with alcoholism. More recently, post-9/11 Medal of Honor recipients such as Kyle Carpenter and Ryan Pitts have become vocal advocates for veterans and their mental health and reintegration.

When confronted with American valor, Trump has a history of making disparaging comments, dating as far back as 2015 when he said of the late Senator John McCain, a recipient of the Silver Star, that he “was only a war hero because he was captured,” adding, “I like people who weren’t captured, okay?” Perhaps Trump thinks the Medal of Freedom is “better” because he, as the president, can award it to whomever he pleases, including friends and donors. The Medal of Honor affords him no such discretion. Also, it seems beyond his comprehension that an award could simply lead to another chapter of service and not become an accolade used for simple personal advantage.

During Trump’s presidency, he presided over 12 presentations of the Medal of Honor. If he wins the White House in November, he’ll likely preside over more. I doubt anyone will be saying at any future White House presentation that an award wasn’t deserved. But they might say, instead, that the man presenting it doesn’t deserve the honor of performing the task.

This year the Xbox booth will feature over 50 gaming titles from Xbox Game Studios, Blizzard, Bethesda, and our amazing third-party partners – spread across more than 240 gaming stations – alongside amazing photo ops and experiences, and specially constructed theaters for exclusive looks at upcoming titles.  

Attendees will be able to go hands-on with upcoming Xbox releases, including:

Joining the Xbox booth for the first time, Blizzard Entertainment will make their return to gamescom with multiple offerings for Diablo and World of Warcraft . Ahead of the launch of the Vessel of Hatred expansion in October, Diablo will bring an exclusive public hands-on gameplay demo of the Spiritborn class to the gamescom show floor, with a Diablo Immortal Helliquary boss tournament taking place as well. World of Warcraft celebrates the launch of The War Within on August 26 with the power of a special immersive experience, giving gamescom attendants the chance to feel the thrill of Skyriding in Azeroth.  

The Xbox booth will also have playable titles from our third-party partners, including Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws , Saber Interactive’s Space Marine 2, Rebellion’s Atomfall, and the return of GSC Game World’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl with an all-new demo. And in our Indie Selects area – dedicated to diverse, exciting upcoming titles from independent developers – we’ll host games including Maximum Entertainment’s Squirrel with a Gun, Noodlecake’s Winter Burrow, 11 bit Studios’ Creatures of Ava, and more .

This year at gamescom, Game Pass is turning up the fun with an exciting setup reminding players that they can discover their next favorite game across devices.
