Study in Denmark

What is a PhD programme?

A PhD is usually a 3-year (180 ECTS) academic research degree. The components of the programme are:

  • Independent research under supervision
  • Courses for PhD students (approximately 30 ECTS credits)
  • Participation in research networks, including placements at other, primarily foreign, research institutions
  • Teaching or another form of knowledge dissemination, which is related to the PhD topic when possible.
  • The completion of a PhD thesis. The thesis can be a 200-page article or a collection of shorter research articles. The thesis is defended orally.

PhD programmes and courses are offered at Danish universities , which all offer excellent research, library and laboratory facilities for researchers and PhD students in addition to joint partnerships with industry.

PhD students are often encouraged to participate in research networks, including placements at overseas research institutions. A range of funding opportunities are available: Please visit the Researchers Mobility Portal for more information.

Who can apply?

As each institution in Denmark is responsible for its own admissions, requirements will vary. However, you will usually be required to have a recognised Masters degree in a relevant subject in order to be enrolled as a PhD student. Also, the applicants should also have good command of the English language.

For the students, who know that they want to pursue the researcher-path early on, the faculties have the option of starting a research degree directly after a bachelor’s. If this is the path you want to take, you can start a so-called 3+5 programme, which means starting your PhD and master's at the same time. Some faculties have a 4+4 programme where you can start your PhD after a year of master’s studies. The Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen offers these two programmes, for example. Each individual university lays down its own rules regarding this type of hybrid PhD. An example of this is Aarhus University’s 4- and 5-year PhD scholarships .

What should I include in my application?

In Denmark you must apply for PhD programmes in writing via advertised projects and scholarships . Usually, you either apply for an opportunity with a pre-defined research topic, or you propose your own research ideas.

You also have to include a transcript of your grades for your bachelor’s and master’s degrees with documentation of your grades, and a CV.

How can I finance my PhD?

For students from the EU/EEA/Switzerland higher education in Denmark is free

You may be eligible for free tuition as an international student, provided you meet one of the following conditions:

  • You hold a permanent residence permit
  • You hold a temporary residence permit that can be upgraded to a permanent one
  • You hold a residence permit as the accompanying child of a non-EU/EEA holding a residence permit based on employment

All other students pay tuition fees. The fee is 50,000 DKK per year, i.e. 150,000 DKK for three years and is not postponed during any absence from the three-year PhD programme such as maternity/paternity leave, other leaves of absence or long-term illness.

The first rate is paid at enrolment, the second rate is paid in the first quarter of the calendar year following enrolment and the third rate is paid in the first quarter of the second calendar year following enrolment.

The grant provider must guarantee for the payment of the tuition fee for all three years when applying for enrolment.

The tuition fee covers

  • PhD courses included in the Graduate School’s course catalogue
  • PhD courses at other Danish universities and to some extent courses from other providers in Denmark or abroad
  • Expenses regarding stays at other research environments in Denmark or abroad
  • Activities in the graduate programmes
  • Assessments and defence of your PhD thesis

Therefore, you have to be able to finance both your degree and your living costs. You can do this in several different ways:

Industrial PhD

If you aim to conduct a research project with commercial perspectives, you can apply for an industrial PhD. You will be employed by a private sector company and at the same time enrolled as a PhD student at the Graduate School at a university.

As an industrial PhD student you will carry out research where results are applied in an enterprise setting. The cooperation between university and industry gives you access to new knowledge and innovation provided by the private sector company.

Application process for the industrial PhD

  • Start by finding a private sector company and a university supervisor for your PhD project.
  • The private sector company must send an application to Innovation Fund Denmark to apply for the industrial PhD grant on your behalf.
  • If successful, you can apply for enrolment at the Graduate School.

Visit the website of Innovation Fund Denmark to learn about application deadlines, requirements and how to proceed with your application.

How much can you expect to be paid as a PhD student?

If you are funded by a faculty  or a department, your salary is regulated by the Agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the Ministry of Finance (in Danish) (AC agreement). The average monthly salary for a PhD fellow at the University of Copenhagen is 32,567 DKK. After earning their doctorate , researchers go on to a postdoc which, in Denmark , can last up to four years at the same university.

PhD students employed at a hospital:

If you are employed at a hospital your salary follows the collective agreements in place at the Danish regions. In this agreement your employment depends on the degree you hold. Medical doctors are employed according to the collective agreement of the Danish Medical Association while other candidates are employed following the AC agreement. Contact your employer for more information.

Industrial PhD students employed by a private sector company

If you are employed as an industrial PhD student, your salary follows the collective agreement in place at your company. Contact your employer for more information.

Who gets accepted?

The head of the relevant PhD school decides which applicants will be accepted and enrolled into the programme – but of course it is not entirely at his/her own discretion. The applicants are selected based on a recommendation from the academic staff members on the faculty’s PhD committee.

Florence denmark, phd.

By Tasha Dorsey

Florence Denmark, PhD

Denmark initially planned to study clinical psychology at the graduate level, but later found she was far more interested in social psychology (PSFT, 2011). She married an orthodontist in 1953, and continued her graduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania where she received her master’s degree and PhD in social psychology in 1958 (Denmark, 2008; PSFT, 2011). It was at this time that she and her husband moved to New York and started a family, prompting her to look for part-time work in academia (PSFT, 2011). At Queens College, she found a position as an adjunct professor and later applied for a teaching position at Hunter College (PSFT, 2011). Denmark recalled that despite having a PhD and several publications, she was given the title of instructor (Denmark, 2008). In a later interview, she recalled that at that time, men were more likely to receive the better paying title of assistant professor (Denmark, 2008).

While she was always interested in research on women’s leadership, Denmark credits Virginia Staudt Sexton as being the person who influenced her to become more active in the field (Denmark, 2008). She became a member of the New York State Psychological Association (NYSPA) and the New York Academy of Sciences (Denmark, 2008). In 1969, she was also one of the founding members of the Association for Women in Psychology (AWP), an organization whose objective at that time was to target unjust employment practices within the American Psychological Association (APA) (Denmark, 2008; Tiefer, 1991). Around this same time, students at the City University of New York requested a course on the psychology of women (Denmark, 2008). Although their initial request was rejected, the course was eventually approved and Denmark became the first professor to teach psychology of women at the doctorate level (Denmark, 2008). She also co-wrote several texts that are considered foundational to women’s studies such as Women’s Realities, Women’s Choices (1983) (Denmark, 2008). She went on to become the third president of the Division of the Psychology of Women of the APA (PSFT, 2011). She was also the fifth woman, and the first Jewish woman to be president of the APA (PSFT, 2011; Unger, 2009). When asked about her effective leadership style, Denmark recalled a friend who described her as an “iron fist in the velvet glove” (Denmark, 2008, p. 9). She felt she was able to use her femininity and gentleness as strengths (Denmark, 2008).

While her work in leadership roles and women’s interests are notable, Denmark interests go further (Denmark, 2008). Work with ethnic minorities has also been a lifelong passion for Denmark. While working at Queens College in the 1960’s, she and colleague Marcia Guttentag conducted a study at a local school where they were able to demonstrate positive effects of integration for both African American and White students. She was also the director of the Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge program, a program which was designed to support low income students. As of 2008, she was still a member of the Division of Ethnic Minority Psychology. When asked about the current abundance of women and lack of men in psychology, Denmark remarked it will always be important to maintain a balance and therefore bringing more men and minorities into the field should be a focus in the future. Another interest of Denmark’s is international social issues. She is the APA’s representative to the United Nations (Denmark, 2008).

In addition to the APA, she has also been president of the International Council of Psychologists, Eastern Psychological Association, NYSPA, and Psi Chi (Social Psychology Network, 2011). She has four honorary degrees and numerous awards which include the APA’s Distinguished Contributions to Education and Training Award, and the Public Interest and the Advancement of International Psychology Award (Social Psychology Network, 2011).

PhD-BA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology

Industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology professionals study and assess individual, group, and organizational dynamics in the work environment. They apply their research to work problems and identify solutions to improve the well-being and performance of organizations and their employees. With skills that can be applied to address such issues as recruiting new employees, researching consumer behavior, and measuring employee evaluation and performance, they can be very valuable contributors to organizational leadership.

This interdisciplinary PhD specialization explores the application of industrial and organizational psychology and management theory to the understanding of people in the workplace. You’ll complete courses in both the School of Business and the School of Psychology to develop competencies in theory, research, and applications of psychology related to human behavior in organizations. You’ll then apply this learning as you conduct advanced research related to organizational and psychological theories on human resource management.

Admission Requirements

A conferred master’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited academic institution. In addition to this general requirement, applicants have two options for entering the doctoral program in the School of Business:

1. Direct Entry – You may immediately begin the doctoral program through the DBA or PhD track with a previously completed master’s degree in one of the following:

  • A generalized business area, such as business management or business administration
  • A specialized business area (Master of Finance, Master of Human Resources Management, etc.) AND an undergraduate degree in business
  • A master’s in any field AND an undergraduate degree in business

2. Evaluation Track – If you don’t meet the direct entry requirements, you’re required to take SKS-7001 – Doctoral Comprehensive Strategic Knowledge Studies as part of your degree program.

The estimated time needed to complete this certificate is 73 months.

Course Listing

This course serves as an introduction to the PhD–BA and as the foundation for further doctoral-level study in business. The PhD–BA degree is designed to encourage you to become a scholar-practitioner, using business theory to inform further scholarly inquiry and positively impact business practices. You will examine requirements for the degree—including each milestone and deliverable—and will develop a plan for achieving your academic and research goals. This preparation will be done in the context of an examination of modern trends in business theory and in beginning the transition from being consumers of knowledge to being producers of knowledge.

Students will analyze and apply knowledge in 12 business areas necessary to address a wide variety of business-related situations. The focus of the course is demonstrating core proficiencies in the following business areas: Marketing, Business Finance, Accounting, Management, Legal Environment of Business, Economics, Business Ethics, Global Dimensions of Business, Information Systems, Quantitative Techniques and Statistics, Leadership, and Business Applications. The intent is not to introduce these core business concepts, but rather to verify a graduate-level threshold competency within each. The course includes a comprehensive case study that will allow students to demonstrate their competency within all 12 professional component areas.

It is important for scholar-practitioners to understand both the internal and external influences on business—the business environment. In this course, students will examine theories related to those environmental factors including business ethics, international business, and marketing. Internal environmental factors include management and organizational behavior.

The allied fields of economics, accounting, and finance are key areas where a highly knowledgeable leader can greatly contribute to the success of a business. Financial professionals secure and manage the money needed to run a business; economists determine how markets will react in certain situations; and accountants provide analysis and accountability to the entire process. In this course, scholar-practitioners will work towards information fluency in theories related to these critical knowledge areas.

Good plans aligned against clear strategic goals can help business leaders achieve those goals. This course is an overview of the theories involved in strategic planning to aid business. Students will explore the difference between strategic thinking and strategic planning, how to choose a strategy that is right for each business, and how to design a strategic plan. This course will investigate how to analyze customers and the competition and ask key questions that help design the most effective strategic plan for each business.

In this course, you will engage in the process of scholarly literature reviews and academic writing. With an emphasis on how to (a) conduct effective literature searches, specifically in preparation for the dissertation, (b) develop a plan for writing comprehensive, critical, and synthesized reviews of research literature, and (c) critically review and write about underlying theory/conceptual frameworks, you will develop a foundation for future research. The overarching goal of this course is for you to conduct an exhaustive search of the peer-reviewed research literature in your topic area and identify potential areas of inquiry for your dissertation.

In this course, you will cultivate a statistical mindset through learning and nurturing skills needed to perform and interpret univariate inferential statistics. The course will facilitate building your statistical confidence in assessing and performing statistics. The course will cover univariate parametric and non-parametric statistical tests, interpretation of statistical output, and introduce skills needed to select statistical tests based on quantitative research questions.

In this course, you will learn advanced statistical principles and how to apply them to quantitative research in the study of organizations. You will be provided an overview of advanced statistical concepts used in empirical research, including inferential analysis. Advanced computations will be performed using commonly used statistical software. The focus involves helping you build independent scholarly skills with an emphasis on understanding multivariate data; the use, comprehension, and evaluation of sophisticated statistical concepts, and presentation of statistical results.

During this course, as a scholar-practitioner, you will build the skills essential for designing quantitative studies; analyzing the data collected in these studies, and interpreting the results of data analyses. You will explore designs and statistical techniques to use with their envisioned dissertation research.

During this course, you will examine qualitative methods for studying human behavior including grounded theory, narrative analysis, ethnography, mixed methods, and case studies. You will explore designs and methodologies to use with your envisioned research.

The Pre-Candidacy Prospectus is intended to ensure students have mastered knowledge of their discipline prior to candidacy status and demonstrated the ability to design empirical research as an investigator before moving on to the dissertation research coursework. Students will demonstrate the ability to synthesize empirical, peer-reviewed research to support all assignments in this course. The Pre-Candidacy Prospectus is completed only after all foundation, specialization, and research courses have been completed.

Students in this course will be required to complete Chapter 1 of their dissertation proposal including a review of literature with substantiating evidence of the problem, the research purpose and questions, the intended methodological design and approach, and the significance of the study. A completed, committee approved (against the minimum rubric standards) Chapter 1 is required to pass this course successfully. Students who do not receive approval of Chapter 1 to minimum standards will be able to take up to three supplementary 8-week courses to finalize and gain approval of Chapter 1.

Students in this course will be required to work on completing Chapters 1-3 of their dissertation proposal and receive committee approval for the Dissertation Proposal (DP) in order to pass the class. Chapter 2 consists of the literature review. Chapter 3 covers the research methodology method and design and to includes population, sample, measurement instruments, data collection and analysis, limitations, and ethical considerations. In this course, a completed, committee-approved Chapters 2 and 3 are required and, by the end of the course, a final approved dissertation proposal (against the minimum rubric standards). Students who do not receive approval of the dissertation proposal will be able to take up to three supplementary 8-week courses to finalize and gain approval of these requirements.

Students in this course will be required to prepare, submit, and obtain approval of their IRB application, collect data, and submit a final study closure form to the IRB. Students still in data collection at the end of the 12-week course will be able to take up to three supplementary 8-week courses to complete data collection and file an IRB study closure form.

In this dissertation course students work on completing Chapters 4 and 5 and the final Dissertation Manuscript. Specifically, students will complete their data analysis, prepare their study results, and present their findings in an Oral Defense and a completed manuscript. A completed, Committee approved (against the minimum rubric standards) Dissertation Manuscript and successful Oral Defense are required to complete the course and graduate. Students who do not receive approval for either or both their Dissertation Manuscript or defense can take up to three supplementary 8-week courses to finalize and gain approval of either or both items as needed.

PhD scholarship within the field of Behavioural science insights for nature-based solutions Declaration of interest regarding PhD project The Danish Centre for Motivation and Behaviour Science (DRIVEN) and the Department of Biology at SDU are looking for applicants for a PhD scholarship within the field of behavioural sciences. We are looking for a person with a relevant undergraduate and masters degree in (health) psychology, behavioural economics, or related research fields. The ideal candidate should have a passion and background (academic knowledge and ideally some experience) in applying behavioural science to understand and promote climate-friendly solutions. Research environment The successful candidate will be placed within DRIVEN, the Danish Centre for Motivation and Behaviour Science (Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Sports Sciences and Clinical Biomechanics). The supervision team will consist of Professors Nikos Ntoumanis and Cecilie Thøgersen-Ntoumani from DRIVEN, and Professor Gary Banta from the Department of Biology. Project description This PhD is embedded within a large Horizon project funded by the European Union (?U) which aims to develop and promote Nature-based Solutions (NbS). NbS are management solutions including and inspired by nature to address a variety of environmental and sustainability challenges, while enhancing biodiversity and other ecological functions. Climate adaptation and mitigation are important focus areas where NbS are expected to be essential instruments toward the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 as well as transforming society towards climate resilience. The EU funded project is called ARCADIA and involves a collaboration between several EU regions and universities. More details about the scope of ARCADIA can be found here: https://www.sdu.dk/en/forskning/arcadia . Within ARCADIA, there is a behavioural science component, represented in Work Package (WP) 7. The PhD student will work on two tasks within WP7, liaising with regional partners within the region of Fyn (Odense Municipality, the Region of Southern Denmark, the Odense Fjord Samarbejdet and VandCenter Syd) and international partners (universities and organisations involved in WP7, including other PhD students and post-docs). There are project obligations for the Ph.D. candidate that are defined by the ARCADIA project, including assessing the of motivation and barriers of stakeholder groups (e.g., citizens, managers, policy makers) to implement nature-based solutions (NbS). Methods are likely to include surveys, interviews, and discrete choice experiments. The knowledge from these studies will be used in the second PhD task which aims to develop a guidance template to help regions achieve behaviour change with regard to NbS in a structured, systematic, and evidence-based manner. The development of such guidance will involve inputs from other WPs and evidence from the first task. The guidance will help regions develop new or modify existing behaviour change interventions for NbS, targeting a range of individual, social, and policy factors. PhD student accused of killing friend's baby faces death penalty if convicted

Pittsburgh prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case of a woman accused of killing a 6-week-old baby and injuring his twin brother in June, a new court filing shows.

Nicole Virzi, 30, a PhD student, was charged with homicide and multiple counts of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children. The charges stem from an incident in June when Virzi was babysitting the twin boys of a couple she knew in Pittsburgh.

According to a criminal complaint, Virzi called the police on the night of June 15, claiming that one of the twins had fallen from a bassinet. The baby, named Leon Katz, was rushed to a nearby children's hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The next evening, Virzi discovered injuries to Leon’s twin brother, including scratches, bruising and swelling. After the second baby was taken to the hospital, doctors found the injuries sustained by both twins were neither natural nor accidental.

An examination by the medical examiner's office revealed that Leon had suffered from a severe skull fracture and multiple brain bleeds, with the cause of death determined to be blunt force trauma to the head, resulting from homicide.

Virzi, who had been staying at an Airbnb property in Pittsburgh, told police that Leon was in a bouncer seat when she left the room to get him a bottle. She then heard the baby screaming and found him on the floor before she contacted police. Virzi also alleged that Leon's twin brother got a scratch to his face when she tried to put him in a car seat and he flailed his arms.

The twins' parents denied inflicting any injuries on their children.

The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office cited torture as one of the aggravating factors justifying its pursuit of the death penalty.

Virzi’s defense attorney, David Shrager, told NBC News that Virzi was close friends with the twin’s parents and maintains her innocence.

“This was not the direction we hoped the case would go,” Shrager said. “We strongly disagree with the allegations made by the DA’s office regarding the death penalty. We will of course be litigating this case aggressively until the truth comes out.”

Virzi was pursuing her doctorate at the University of California, San Diego. According to the university's website , she was studying behavioral medicine in the joint doctoral program in clinical psychology.

She is being held in the Allegheny County Jail without bond.

Pennsylvania is one of 27 states where the death penalty remains legal. Over 100 people remain on death row in the state — including just one woman — but no executions have been carried out since 1999.

When Gov. Josh Shapiro took office last year, he a nnounced that he would not issue any execution warrants during his term. He called on the General Assembly to abolish the death penalty, saying, "The Commonwealth shouldn't be in the business of putting people to death."

Jerry Kernes, PhD , is professor, program chair, and director of clinical training PsyD program in clinical psychology, University of La Verne. Kernes is responsible for the administration and oversight of all aspects of the PsyD program. Clinical psychology doctoral student Kendall Smith earns NSF fellowship

  • Anna Mayor, USF College of Arts and Sciences

Accomplishments , Research

USF College of Arts and Sciences doctoral student Kendall Smith is the recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

The fellowship will provide Smith, who is earning her PhD in clinical psychology , with a $37,000 stipend to devote time to her research.

“Time in a program that is as busy and rigorous as USF's is so crucial, so having more of financial support is huge,” she explained. “The support also is extremely helpful for disseminating findings at research conferences and other professional development opportunities. Being an NSF Graduate Research Fellow can mean a lot to others in the scientific community. I firmly believe the value of collaboration is so important when conducting research to have diverse perspectives and stronger impacts on the communities we try to reach. [It] gives me greater opportunities to access other exceptional professionals around the world to improve the quality of my work and reach lay audiences.”

She also adds that she views the fellowship as “a responsibility to contribute to the broader scientific community and to mentor others, helping to advance knowledge and create positive future impact for the field of psychology and related disciplines.”

Smith will begin her fellowship this fall working with Dr. Edelyn Verona , professor in the Department of Psychology and co-director of the Center for Justice, Research and Policy , as her advisor. She is expected to complete the fellowship in the Fall of 2029.

The aim of her research, which will be the basis for her thesis, aims to address issues of inequity in the criminal legal system, externalizing behaviors, and bias among system-involved populations.

She wants to understand more about how contextual information may alter how individuals conceptualize the externalizing construct, which represents a liability toward disruptive, impulsive and disinhibited behaviors.

“I am interested in understanding if context such as community and systemic representations of inequity and sociodemographic variables may be biasing the extent to which current behavioral indicators of externalizing (e.g., substance use, aggression, etc.) are a true reflection of the construct and are measured differently across different levels of disadvantage,” she added.

“Dr. Edelyn Verona's experience in the field will be essential in reaching these goals through individual mentorship as well as connections with other professionals and community organizations. One way this has already happened is getting connected to Dr. Keanan Joyner, assistant professor of psychology at UC Berkeley, who has also provided support for statistical modeling in my application proposal and will serve as an additional mentor for the project.”

“Dr. Verona and criminology professor Dr. Bryanna Fox lead our lab and the Center for Justice Research and Policy (CJRP), which is a multidisciplinary organization committed to the study of crime, violence, and social justice policy,” she added. “As a student in the CJRP, I have opportunities to disseminate my research with community practitioners and policy makers and collaborate with other leaders. This way, my research can be well-informed from multiple perspectives and has greater opportunities for informing real change in affected communities.”

Smith said that as a psychology student she aims to help people and better understand human behavior.

“I've become especially passionate in conducting research that not only influences the field, but also practice and policy and positively influences the people who are negatively impacted by inequitable systems, crime, and antisocial behavior,” she added. “Pursuing a PhD in clinical psychology will and has already allowed me to further my understandings in these areas and reach these goals.”
