London is the most beautiful and historical city in United Kingdom. I have always been obsessed with London since I was just a teenager. I used to imagine walking down to its streets to witness the architectural and historical beauty of this city. It has a quite rich British culture which it has kept preserved for so many years. I felt the need to explore it but didn’t know from where I should start. So, I shortlisted a few places out of all of its amazing and historical places because of the exceptional aspects they have.

Museum of London

I started from ‘Museum of London’ about which I knew a little before as well. I had an idea that it is a charitable institution which is funded by a lot of organizations. But after visiting it, I came to know what stunning and architectural masterpiece it actually is. It holds a huge history of British culture. It will show you off London in different ages and time eras, from the prehistory time to today modern times with its legendary exhibitions. It has a collection of up to 1 million objects to show to the world. If you really want to know more about the history of London, the Museum of London is a must visit for you.

After that, I visited “Big Ben”, the longest tower of London which has a height of 320 feet. It has been the palace of Westminster previously. It has four clocks which are facing each other across 23 feet. It is undoubtedly a distinct central point of parliament which looks even more exuberant when the sunlight turns its structure into golden relief. It is basically famous for its massive bell which weighs more than 13 tonnes. There are different theories present based on its name and history. However, it was renamed as Elizabeth tower on June 2012 in remembrance and honor of Queen Elizabeth.

Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge in London is another stunning place which was first opened in 1894. People around the world know it for its Gothic style and pale blue lines. If you are lucky enough, when you visit this place, the bridge will be open for the ship to pass. That moment, you can have a look at its advanced mechanics and architecture. Tower bridge exhibitions are usually arranged to display films and photos to explain how it was built. It is said that it took eight years of efforts by major contractors and labors to build the tower bridge. Two massive pillars got sunk into the river in order to support the construction. The café serves delicious afternoon tea, light bites, and a lot of English and Turkish food.

It was founded in 1964 and since then it has been a fashion brand for the youth. Its first independent shop was, however, opened in 1970. After which, a brand for men also came into existence named as “Topman”. It is more like a small city which consists of everything from shopping outlets, wig-fitting, and tattooing to ‘print your own pattern facilities. I can bet that there is nothing which you won’t be able to find from here. So start roaming around its basement all the way up to the accessories, where you can also get cold juices and cupcakes to get the fuel for your well-spent day.

Greenwich Market

Since I am too much into arts & crafts, my next stop was Greenwich Market. It has a strong association with the royal time period. It was a birthplace for Henry, Mary, and Elizabeth. Today, it gives preference to the traders who want to manufacture their own products. You will find all of the new and fresh products there. You can’t think about buying something a week later or so because the manufacturers keep refreshing their collections and stalls. On weekends, there are a huge number of arts & crafts, and food stalls. I also found different food styles there which included Spanish, Mexican, Ethiopian, and so many more. I also got a chance to eat chocolate smothered fruits and freshly baked cakes. They were so delicious that whenever I talk about them, they make my mouth water again.

Theme Parks

There are also different theme parks in London which offer great entertainment through its thrilling rides and wild animals, be it real or mystical. At London Dungeon, you can take a scary yet wonderful 90-minute ride which takes you 1000 years back in the history of London. There are also other interactive plays going on in which different theater actors can surely cause an impact on you with their mind-blowing performances.

I have been going to this city since I was two years old and there were some years when I visited it four or five times a year; despite this, I will never stop getting amazed by it every time I get there. London is the best place for me and my Kuwaiti friends to spend a vacation in because this city is full of sights and nice places to visit with its shops and department stores offering goods for any taste; apart from this, a vacation in London can help non-English speakers, such as the Kuwaitis, perfect and sophisticate their English.

To begin with, London offers its visitors a number of sights the beauty of which is sometimes impossible to describe. Its parks are absolutely amazing; they are so diversified that one visit to London will not suffice if a person wants to see at least a part of them. London has a number of parks which are absolutely amazing. I can state for sure that none of other cities in the world has so much green and open space. There is at least one park in every part of London; at this, it does not matter “if it’s just a small pool with surrounding trees or a park like the magnificent and slightly wild in appearance Richmond Park” (“London Parks”).

The most prominent, perhaps, is Hyde Park which all the visitors go to play tribute to Princess Diana. The park is 360 acres in size and one can rent a boat to paddle in the lake there. There are also St. James’ Park, Primrose Hill Park, Alexandra Park, Regents Park, Syon Park, and an incalculable number of other parks. Theme and adventure parks are also numerous. A visit to any of them will become the greatest fun day a person could ever have.

Madame Tussauds and the London Dungeon are the most famous adventure parks in London, though the others are no less great. It is impossible to leave London without visiting Westminster Abbey, seeing Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, watching the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, and having dinner in Covent Garden (Porter’s English Restaurant would be the best choice) (Moore and Porter 243).

London’s ancient buildings strike the visitors with their mysteriousness and one cannot stop wondering what hides between those old walls and columns created by famous architects and visited by no less famous people. So, visiting London is the best way to spend a vacation because after leaving the hotel one gets into a real fairy-tale where the sights whizz by and the memories about them remain in the mind forever.

Moreover, London is known as a city of shopping this is why doing shopping there is one of the duties each of the visitors is expected to fulfill. Shopping becomes a special entertainment in case the weather is not suitable for sightseeing. I for one adore London weather, though most of the visitors find it rather gloomy. I adore London for its rains for they are a rare occurrence in Kuwait where the weather is sunny hot.

Shopping is the best way to have fun during rainy days in London. The main shopping areas “center around Oxford Street and Regent Street, while Knightsbridge is home to stores stocking even more upmarket goods” (“London Shopping”). Major international and British brands can be found at these shops, but the visitors who look for specialist items will find them in Covent Garden. New Bond Street is for those who search for exclusive shops, while Hatton Garden is the best place to buy jewelry and watches.

Those who are interested in music, especially in rare cuts, will feel like in a dream in Soho where a great number of independent music shops offer the music items of all the possible genres. Therefore, the rainy weather of London is perfect for those who cannot imagine their lives without shopping and who are interested in goods which cannot be found anywhere but in London.

Finally, London is a great place to visit for Kuwaitis in particular because they can meet their nationals there and perfect their English speaking skills. Most of the Kuwaitis speak English well enough, but being in the natural environment will make their English absolutely great. British English is nothing like American English; it is like a song where all the words acquire special meanings. London natives sound so beautiful that all the visitors, regardless of their native language, get British accent because it is impossible not to wish resembling this mysterious language. London is full of people of different nationalities; the Kuwaitis are also numerous there this is why my friends will find London even more attractive and friendly.

Though the population of London is extremely diverse, most of people speak namely English there. This is the best place to improve spoken English because nothing except the communication with a native speaker can make your language richer. The communicative skills get improved after spending several days in London and the excitement, which speaking to the natives (who are, by the way, unbelievably sociable and polite) brings, stays with the visitors for a long time.

What is even more important is that learning English in such a way is entertaining rather than difficult or boring like some of the classes may be. Natural environment allows imitating not only language, accent, and even slang of the native people, but even some of their gestures and facial expressions. This makes the process of learning entertaining and favors the acquisition of knowledge. Thus, a vacation in London is especially useful for the Kuwaitis because English speaking environment can help them make their English even better.

In conclusion, London is indeed the best place for a vacation, especially for people whose native language is not English, such as the Kuwaitis. Ordinary, theme, and amusement parks of London will bring joy to all the visitors; they strike with their beauty and variety offering a number of ways to have fun. Shopping in London will satisfy the needs of even the most exigent shoppers. London shops and department stores not only ensure the visitors with an access to a wide range of goods, but open their doors for the buyers who look for something exclusive and provocatively expensive.

Lastly, a visit to London is extremely useful for the non-English speakers who can improve their English speaking skills, perfect their English, and adopt the beautiful accent of the true English language. I really doubt that there is at least one person who will find a vacation in London boring because it is the best place to have fun and to learn simultaneously.

London is the UK’s capital and the largest city in the country, with a population of 8.8 million people. The city is located in the southeast of England on the River Thames.

The City of London spans 1.1 square miles (2.9 square km) in the central region of Greater London. Greater London encompasses a broader metropolitan area with a substantially larger population, reaching up to 45 miles (70 km) from its centre.

Greater London, or London as it is commonly known, is an administrative area governed by the Greater London Authority. It is organised into 32 local government districts, also known as boroughs see the map below) along with the City of London.

According to the 2021 Census, Greater London had a population of 8.8 million, an increase of 7.7% since 2011.

When was London established?

When the Romans conquered the south of England in 43AD, they constructed a walled settlement on the north bank of the Thames to defend themselves from the defeated Britons. The settlement was named Londinium and became the Roman colony’s capital in Britain.

Two main factors were essential to London’s success as a city. These were:

The city became a port because the Thames is a tidal river.
The city was constructed at the lowest bridging point on the Thames. This is the widest point along a river where a bridge can be built. The first bridge spanning the Thames was built close to present-day London Bridge.

Since it was established almost 2000 years ago, London is still the UK’s capital city. New docks built in the eighteenth century increased the number of ships using London as a port. This led to the growth of London as a centre for trade and commerce, and new manufacturing industries developed. Employment opportunities led to many people migrating from rural areas to London, increasing the population.

Towards the end of the twentieth century, London’s role as a port had significantly declined. However, it remains a hub for the UK’s transport network. Both the UK’s rail and road networks focus on London.

London represents one-third of higher education institutions nationally and one-fifth of the UK’s student population.

London is a world city. A world city is not just important nationally but also on the international stage. Along with New York, London is one of the two most important financial centres in the world. Much of London’s finance industry is located in the “Square Mile” or the “City,” the long-standing business hub of London. The other major financial district is the Canary Wharf area, about four kilometres east of the City.

The headquarters of many international companies are located in London as well as major British companies. Therefore, the city attracts highly skilled workers from across the globe. London is also a national and international centre for education, media and communications networks, medical and legal facilities and culture, tourism and entertainment.

London has the second-best global air connections in the world after Dubai. It is home to the UK’s two busiest airports, Gatwick and Heathrow. This helps to maintain its importance as a tourist destination and maintain London’s global connections.

Forty-seven per cent of the city consists of green space. London recently became the world’s first National Park City through its ambitious urban greening programme.

In September 1777, Samuel Johnson declared to his friend James Boswell, "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life."

Johnson actually was referring to his hectic social calendar, but he did have a point. The city he was discussing was on course to become the largest metropolis the world had ever seen. In 1800, London was home to 1 million residents. By 1911 that number had grown to a staggering 7 million: a population far greater than Paris, Berlin, St. Petersburg and Moscow combined at that time.

London during the 19th century was, in some respects, driving the rest of the world into modernity. It was where the world's first police force and underground railway system emerged. Meanwhile, the inexorable forces of the industrial revolution, running parallel to Britain's massive imperial expansion, made it the most powerful global trading center on the planet.

Most of us, when we think of this period of history, probably associate it on some level with the Victorian novelist Charles Dickens. It's an association the historian Judith Flanders delves into with The Victorian City , first published in the United Kingdom in 2012: "Dickens would describe all of [London's] qualities as though no one had ever seen them before," she writes. "And [afterward] no one would be able to see them again except through his eyes."

Flanders uses secondary historical sources alongside Dickens' own impressions of the city to take us on a dazzling journey through an imperial city plagued by poverty and deeply divided by class.

She arranges the book's chapters thematically rather than chronologically; similarities can be drawn here to Peter Ackroyd's London : a biography that also maps out the history of the city through topics, including theatres, prisons, murders, slums, and the harrowing working conditions of the poor.

Flanders challenges our received wisdom about Victorian London. For example, she refutes the stereotype that the city was rampant with prostitutes. In 1851 an official statistic put the number of working girls in London at 210,000. But Flanders says that during that era, the term "prostitute" could be given to any woman who had sexual relations outside of marriage. Dickens, like many men of the Victorian age, was prone to bouts of hypocrisy and snobbery when speaking about sexual mores, especially when it came to the less well off in London society.

And despite his sympathy for the poor, he still used words like "wild" and "voracious" to describe workhouse children who could barely keep themselves fed and alive. But this attitude — which Flanders reminds us of with frequent quotes from both Dickens' novels and his large body of journalism — may have arisen from the man's constant fear of destitution. He had narrowly escaped a life of poverty: Dickens' father was locked in a London debtors' prison, while 12-year-old Dickens worked long days in a factory and lived apart from his family. And he once admitted that if circumstances were different, he might have turned into a "little robber or [vagabond]" himself.

Flanders is clearly a historian with a strong moral conscience, who repeatedly looks to address issues of social justice. And there's something else underlying her recreation of the streets of 19th century London: the great paradox of the British Empire, where inequality grew exponentially as industry increased and profits soared.

That said, I would have enjoyed a chapter or two analyzing how and why this poverty evolved with such extremity. Nevertheless, Flanders must be given credit for doing an astounding job of recreating every nook and cranny of London in this richly detailed compendium.

Shying away from academic pretension, Flanders tells the epic story of this biggest and boldest Victorian city in all its complexity, with verve, color and a straightforward approach to language that still manages to give a voice to ordinary Londoners — something Dickens would no doubt approve of.

I decided to write a descriptive essay about London as it is one of the most beautiful and historical capitals in the world. It has always been an influential city in Western culture, and due to this reason, it has many historical attractions that are recognizable worldwide. Every year, England’s capital hosts tourists from all continents, and it’s no wonder; the city impresses visitors not only with its ancient landmarks but also with its modern innovations. This essay will describe London’s most famous places of interest such as Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster.

It would be correct to begin the essay by describing the city’s most iconic landmark, Big Ben. The traditional name of the tower is Saint Stephen’s Tower, and it is located near the Houses of Parliament. The clock tower is still the largest one in the United Kingdom and one of the biggest in the world. It is built of brickwork with stone cladding, and the top of the tower is framed with a steeple of cast iron. Regarding the clock itself, it was installed inside the tower in the middle of the nineteenth century. Edmund Beckett Denison designed the extremely accurate clock mechanism that rarely broke down. Moreover, it continued to work even despite the bombing during World War II. Until recent times, the 13-ton bell rang out to the whole city, though only the visitors seemed to notice the sound as locals got used to it. The tower is well-seen from every part of the city, but only when standing close to it can a person examine its real size. In fact, each clock dial is 25 feet in diameter. The hour hand and the minute hand are 9 and 14 feet respectively (Betts). Not only its scale, but the beauty of the clock tower is impressive. The huge white clock has black Roman numerals that are vivid and well-seen even from a big distance. The iron frameworks around the four clock faces make them look expensive and honorable. Probably every person who walks near Big Ben pays attention to the browed by age walls of the clock. They remind visitors and local citizens of the past and the numerous historical events that took place on the streets of London. It is possible to imagine knights riding their horses near the courtyard and watch medieval people living their everyday lives. However, after looking around and noticing the up-to-date buildings which rise above the city, it would return the person back to reality. Such a unique and remarkable combination of ethnicity and modernity induces tourists to visit London again. Also, when standing near Big Ben, it is possible to enjoy the wonderful view of the riverside of the Thames, on which boats with tourists sail from time to time. Besides that, it is valuable to mention the beautiful bridges of London. Several of them are located near the Clock Tower, so people who ride them have a great chance to observe the unforgettable view of the river and Gothic buildings. In addition, the atmosphere near Big Ben is supported by double-decker buses, taxis, hurrying locals, and hundreds of amused tourists. Even at night, the space near the Houses of Parliament is overcrowded because everyone wants to enjoy the fascinating landscape when the four clock faces are illuminated.

Describing the capital of Great Britain, it is also important to mention The House of Parliament, known to many as the Palace of Westminster. This greatest symbol of London, together with Victoria Tower and the Clock Tower, forms an impressive architectural complex recognizable throughout the world. These buildings serve as the meeting places of two legislative bodies, namely the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Houses of Parliament are remarkable examples of Gothic architecture. In fact, the Palace of Westminster is the biggest Gothic palace in the world, and indeed the most impressive. The grandeur of constitutional monarchy and the features of the bicameral parliamentary system show the national character of Britain. In order to imagine the full scale of the building, it is valuable to mention the general distance of all its corridors, which is two miles, and the number of its rooms – more than a thousand. It would not be easy to describe in detail all the rooms, halls, and interesting objects inside the building, but some facts are worth mentioning. For example, the only original place in the Palace of Westminster is Westminster Hall; all other buildings were reconstructed. Unfortunately, it is the only one original facility, all other parts of the Palace were damaged due to the fire in 1834 (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). One of the most distinctive features of the Hall is the oak roof, which was a huge constructional achievement created in that period of time (World Heritage Centre). The wooden roof is decorated with big carved angels that symbolize guardians of the hall. Probably, every visitor of the hall wonders how clever and talented people were many centuries ago. When a person looks up, he or she, perhaps, asks him or herself how possible it was to construct and install such a big roof absolutely manually and without using any technical devices. Undoubtedly, Westminster Hall can impress anyone with its unique architecture and historical value, and this place is really worth seeing.

My childhood dream influenced the topic of my essay. I have always been interested in the culture and history of Great Britain. In addition, I consider London to be one of the most affecting cities in the world, and its most spectacular landmark Big Ben- a must-see building. Obviously, it is much better to see once than hear a hundred times so I do hope one day I will see London with my own eyes.

1. Enormous

Something extremely large in extent or size.

“The enormous city of London always shocked tourists. They expected a big city, but not one that sprawled for over 600 square miles.”

“She wished to be back in the enormous city. London and its busy streets always felt like home to her.”

How it Adds Description

London is a very large city in comparison with others, and you can emphasize its size via the adjective “enormous.” This shows your characters are impressed by its size, and it can also imply they’ve never seen such a large city. This also gives your reader a clearer image of the setting in their minds.

Something that’s very grimy and dirty .

“He kept running, but the filthy London streets felt like a maze. He didn’t know where to go, and the city was scaring him.”

“The group was cold, and the filthy city of London offered them no comfort. They needed to get to a hotel as soon as possible.”

While London is a gorgeous place, like all large cities, it has some dirt and grime. “Filthy” paints a more negative image of the city for your reader, ideal if you’re setting up a scary or depressing scene. This adjective can also show that your character feels uncomfortable amongst the dirt, implying that they want to leave.

3. Advanced

Something that has a modern design or better technology than others.

“Compared to her hometown, London was advanced . The skyscrapers felt like they were from a different world.”

“London was advanced , and there was no doubt about it. From the innovative subway system to the beautiful architecture, it was a modern metropolis.”

“Advanced” can help you show how modern London feels to your characters. This adjective can contrast London with other settings in your book, showing the characters are in awe of the city’s technology. It could also show the city is set in the future, and you can use this to build up a sci-fi ambiance with lots of mentions of technology and futuristic aesthetics.

Something or somewhere that’s old but still appreciated.

“Amongst the new buildings, London was still vintage . The winding streets and Victorian architecture were hard to ignore.”

“London was a vintage haven. Here you could step back in time to the 1800s and far beyond.”

Many parts of London are old or have snippets of the past. “Vintage” can emphasize these details, ensuring your readers have a clear picture of the city’s old charm in their minds. This can also show your character’s personal appreciation for aged buildings or art.

Somewhere that’s full of people .

“He snuck through the crowded London streets, feeling safe as he hid from the police.”

“She didn’t like the busy atmosphere. London was crowded , and that would never change.”

“Crowded” shows how a place is filled with people, and this creates a vivid image of the place for your reader. The word can show your character is bothered by the hustle, and you can use this to show their overall discomfort in busy places.

Someone or somewhere that’s graceful or has an attractive style.

“He was in awe of the city’s elegance . London was much more refined than anywhere he’d ever been.”

“She admired elegant London, but she knew she didn’t fit in amongst the polished people.”

“Elegant” shows your characters are impressed with the way London looks and how its inhabitants act. The word “elegant” shows the city appears more refined or luxurious, and this can imply your characters take note of aesthetic details or are observant.

Somewhere that leaves people feeling exhausted or sleepy.

“The teacher felt that London was tiring . The city left him feeling weary.”

“Yes, London is a tiring city. But that’s the beauty of it!”

Big cities can be “tiring,” and the use of this adjective indicates your characters don’t enjoy city life. “Tiring” can also show some characters are better suited to rural environments, or it can highlight the harsh reality of being in a city.

8. Fashionable

Something or somewhere that’s approved of or popular at a specific time.

“Please, can we go back to fashionable London? I wish to be amongst the trendsetters!”

“He agreed that London was fashionable , but he didn’t want to live amongst such frivolity.”

If a character deems London “fashionable,” they likely appreciate the style of the city and the people. This could further imply the character is quite materialistic, as they regard design and style higher than other qualities.

Something that’s full of enthusiasm and energy.

“The tourists thought London was vibrant , especially after seeing the hustle and bustle of the markets.”

“As he weaved through the vibrant city of London, he admired the streets, shops, and beauty of the place.”

Somewhere “vibrant” is packed with exciting life and buzzing energy. This adjective shows that London is a lively place to be, and this could be a positive thought from your character. “Vibrant” also shows that the setting is an overall nice place to be, especially for extroverted characters.

10. Deafening

A place that’s extremely loud .

“In the deafening city of London, no one could hear themselves think. The traffic was simply too loud.”

“London was deafening , and the excess noise scared the tourists. They were used to subdued villages and peaceful nature.”

If a character describes London as “deafening,” it shows they’re finding the city very loud in an unpleasant way. This could hint that they want to go back to somewhere quieter or more peaceful. “Deafening” can also show how busy the city is, as lots of people and traffic are likely causing all the noise.

London is a stable and inclusive city. It is the capital and the most famous city of England. Its eminence is due to the presence of river Thames.

History of London:-

As every city has some history, so does the London, It possesses a history of more than 2000 years but even then it is totally modern. Romans laid its foundation, and they called it with the name Londinium. In 2011, its population was 7,375. In 1889, the city was given the name London. Since that time, it has also recognized as the Country of London and now Greater London.

Modern city:-

It is the modern city as well. It possesses the elegant and stylish features in Mayfair, Hampstead, Knightsbridge, and Chelsea. It also provides the distinct features in Shoreditch, Camden, and Dalston. Moreover, its vast business and the educational center provides the professionals and artists with too many opportunities.

Multicultural City:-

London is based on many cultures. It is stated as the multi-cultural city, and that’s the main reason for me for liking this city. Anyone can learn different cultures from here. Anyone can make friendships and relationships here.

Inhabitants of this City:-

Also, another feature which makes the city most favorite for anyone is the behavior of its inhabitants. British people are very loving, well- mannered, and considerate.

The city is well known for its museums which make it the finest city in the world. Most of the museums are free there. The British museums are big, and few of them allows free entry. London is my favorite city as it offers the best stores for shopping. One of the oldest departmental stores named Selfridges is recognized as the best stores in London.

Weather of London:-

Weather of the city is cold. It possesses a moderate climate. It is one of the things that most people like about London. It’s a rainy city of England. Usually, summers are warm and occasionally hot. The winter season here is cool and moist. You can see snowfall also which can create a disturbance while traveling. In London, autumn and spring seasons are pleasant and enjoyable.

The major neighborhoods, streets, squares, and landmarks of London

London is huge, and it sprawls. Its 625 square miles consist of many small towns and villages that have slowly been gobbled up in a centuries-long urban expansion.

Officially, London is divided into 32 boroughs plus the City of London , and most visitors spend 99% of their time in the City and the 12 boroughs of Inner London , rarely venturing into the 20 boroughs of Outer London .

The bulk of central London lies north of the River Thames (or west of it, once the river turns southward).

Central London is more or less bounded by the vaguely Absolut bottle–shaped twinned loop of the District and Circle Tube (subway) lines, roughly divided between The City (all business and banking), the West End (itself comprising many neighborhoods whose names you'll get used to as you trundle about this lively center of London's restaurant , shopping , theatre , nightlife, and museum scene), and—west of the West End—the areas around Westminster and Hyde Park.

The neighborhoods of London

Most of London's 8.17 million residents don't both with the borough names and still use traditional neighborhood names, and we'll do so as well, lumping a few neighboring ones together for convenience.

Yes, each is unique and has its own style and flavor and history—but, frankly, to the average visitor, most can be lumped together into groups of two or four adjacent areas that are really rather similar, and this will make things far easier.

So, the fanciiful neighborhood designations below will detail which collection of traditional neighborhoods fall into our broader categories. (Old London hands may notice a few gaps, but honestly: how many visitors ever find themselves in Pimlico or Lambeth?)

Today on the eastern edge of London's center, The City—today mostly business and banking—is the ancient square mile where the Romans founded the original Londinium.

The City now home to St. Paul's Cathedral , the Tower of London , Tower Bridge , and other icons of Ye Olde Londontowne. The City is best known as London's main financial district (and the one-time center of British newspaper publishing, on Fleet Street)—filled with expensive suits by day, but a bit dead and deserted after office hours.

The City is also unique in London in that it a self-governing neighborhood, with its own mayor, police force (the City Police, versus the Metropolitan Police who patrol the rest of London), and other quirky traditions.

For our purposes, we'll extend "The City" just to the north to include the Barbican and Farringdon neighborhoods. (Hey: they're just as historic; in fact, you can still see stretch of the Roman-era wall here.)

The West End: Theatreland

(covent garden, soho, piccadilly, trafalgar square).

Think of this heart of the West End as the central turnstile of London, famously home to London's top playhouses and theatres around Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square.

Piccadilly/Leicester Square is also London's party central with lots of crowded pubs , bars, and commercial clubs; the biggest movie houses; and Piccadilly Circus itself, is a bustling traffic circle of tacky neon.

The theatre district continued eastward into Covent Garden, and the Strand, comprising an upscale restaurant , entertainment, and funky shopping quarter.

To the west, Soho, once a seedy red-light district, is these days scrubbed more-or-less clean to house numerous budget eateries from every corner of the globe and what remains of London's old Chinatown (nice red Chinatown gate and some Chinese shops).

South of here is the hub of London, Trafalgar Square, all monuments, museums , and milling tourists hopping on and off double-decker sightseeing buses .

The University District

(bloomsbury, holborn, fitzrovia).

Just north of the greater West End and City lies the intellectual side of London.

Holborn is another old district today filled with the offices of lawyers and other professionals.

North of this district is the literary, academic's Bloomsbury, home to the British Museum and the University of London.

West of Bloomsbury, Fitzrovia is an old writer's hangout with shops and pubs (and some fine hotels ) that fades into Soho to the south.

East of Hyde Park: Upscale London

(mayfair, marylebone, regent's park).

Farther to the west are the bland residential grid of Marylebone streets, and fashionable and tony Mayfair, full of foreign embassies and pricey hotels just east of enormous Hyde Park .

The long, mid-scale shopping boulevard of Oxford Street draws visitors to Madame Tussaud's and the haunts of the fictional Sherlock Holmes .

North of this stretches lovely Regent's Park .

Westminster: Rule Britannia, Parliament and the Royal Family

(westminster, st. james's, victoria).

Southwest of Piccadilly Circus is Westminster, running along the western bank of the Thames' north-south stretch.

This is the heart and soul of political Britain, home to Parliament, Big Ben , and the Prime Minister's home at 10 Downing Street, shading into the the royal district stretching from Westminster to Buckingham Palace through the exclusive, old residential streets of St. James's (picture a gentlemen's club and expand it several blocks in each direction).

Westminster flows into Victoria to the south, broadening to Millbank and Pimlico. Centered upon Victoria train station, this neighborhood remains genteel and residential, though the streets get a bit dingier and more knockabout (with a glut of cheap hotels ) around Victoria Station.

South of Hyde Park: Posh London

(knightsbridge, belgravia, chelsea, south kensington, kensington).

West of the West End, the neighborhoods are divided north-south by enormous Hyde Park .

South of it stretch the variably posh and upper middle-class fashionable residential zones of Knightsbridge, Kensington, and South Kensington, which are also home to London's grandest shopping streets and some quite posh hotels .

This old aristocratic zone full of stylish town houses is where London keeps Harrods , the world's ur-department store (in Knightsbridge), as well as the Victoria & Albert Museum , Royal Albert Hall, and a whole passel of foreign embassies.

West of here, Northwest of Victoria and west of Westminster is Belgravia, an old aristocratic zone full of stylish townhouses that's just beyond the West End.

South of Belgravia and South Kensington is the artists' and writers' quarter of Chelsea , which manages to keep hip with the changing times (it debuted miniskirts in the 1960s and punk in the 1970s).

North of Hyde Park: Middle Class London

(paddington, bayswater, notting hill, notting hill gate).

North of Hyde Park are the more middle-income residential neighborhoods of Paddington, Bayswater, and Notting Hill, popular among budget travelers for their plethora of B&Bs , inexpensive hotels , and the Portobello Road market .

(Also, in the movie Notting Hill, you can see one of my Frommer's Italy guidebooks to the right of Julia Roberts during the bookshop scenes. This forces me to watch it every time it comes on basic cable.)

Nearby Notting Hill Gate is similar and is becoming a rather hip fashion and dining center in its own right.

South of the Thames

(south bank, southwark, lambeth).

On the other side of the Thames—between vast Waterloo Station in the west and London Bridge in the east—are the arts and cultural centers of Southbank (across from the West End and Westminster) and, just across the river from The City, Southwark (sometimes called Bankside).

Southwark has been wonderfully revitalized thanks to the opening of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre , the excellent Tate Modern art museum (now connected to St. Paul’s Cathedral and The City by the funky pedestrian Millennium Bridge), and a motley assortment of lesser sights.

Southbank —and, to its south, Lambeth —also contain several of London's premiere performance halls and the National Theatre.

Greenwich and The East End

Frankly, on a first-time or quick visit, you'll probably never visit The East End—except perhaps passing through en route to the even more easterly maritime village of Greenwich , on the south bank of a bend in the Thames with some fabulous sights including the Royal Observatory , which keeps the Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude) and the time by which the entire world sets it clocks.

However, as the East End does loom large in the mythos of London, I thought I'd place it for you.

The East End is eternally a somewhat economically depressed area. Traditionally, Whitechapel, Stepney, Wapping, and Bethnal Green (plus southern Hackney ) make up the most famous working class area of London, home to Cockney accents, EastEnders, and an ever changing cadre of hard-working immigrant communities (most notably in the modern era, Bangladeshis).

Historically an often poor area where fortunes rose and fell with the business on the nearby docks and influx of various waves of immigrant groups since the 1700s, London has managed since the 1980s to revive some of the areas (and crack down on some of the crime that sadly goes hand-in-hand with poverty), with varying success in the refurbished business and Thamesside condo districts of Canary Wharf and Docklands.

Tfl.gov.uk - Covers pretty much all London transportation, including the Tube and buses but also taxis, the DLR and other local light rail systems, trams, the London bike share program, and other one-off transport options.
Nationalrail.co.uk - Covers all of the lines once operated by the (since-privitized) old British Rail. This includes most major British railways, but notably does not cover many urban area light rail systems (such as London, Glasgow, Manchester, Blackpool, Sheffield, and Midland Metro), nor does it cover the Eurostar, Heathrow Express , nor a handful of heritage or privately owned railways. Still, it's the closest thing to one-stop shopping for finding train connections across the mainland U.K. (though not Northern Ireland).

Harrods of London installed a novelty in 1898: the world's first true escalator (to be fair, an inclined moving belt with metal bars for traction did make its debut two years earlier on Coney Island). The oddness of a moving staircase so unnerved many shoppers that employees were stationed near it with smelling salts and cognac to help revive those overcome with fear.
