A search for ‘Young Sheldon’ for example, returns a list of all the shows with the word ‘young’ in them. You can get around this by putting your query in quotes, but it’s certainly not intuitive.

Once you’ve found your subs, however, the experience is great. It’s quick and easy to download the subs without any frustrating pop-ups or redirections.

7. YIFY Subtitles

This is one of the rare examples on our list where the name is a little misleading. YIFY was a popular movie torrenting site until it was shut down by the Motion Picture Association of America. These lists include national flag icons, so you don’t have to waste time clicking the links to find out what language the subtitles are in. There’s also a list of the most popular TV shows, based on the number of subtitle downloads on the site.

As with Moviesubtitles, downloading your subtitles once you’ve found them is quick and pain-free.

10. Podnapisi

Whilst the name of the site makes it sound unrelated to subs, podnapisi turns out to be the Slovenian word for subtitles. It’s not a site that focuses on Slovenian language subtitles, however. The process is remarkably quick. Find the video that you want to generate the subtitles for, and copy its URL. Paste this URL into the Downsub website, and click  Download.  You’ll then get the option to choose between SRT or TXT subtitles. There are also additional settings that let you remove any formatting tags from the subs; this option is on by default.

Beneath the obligatory block of ads, there are also links to download the subtitles auto-translated into other languages, with a huge number of language options to choose from. Whilst auto-translated subs will never be perfect, this can be a quick and easy way to get hold of subs in less popular languages that you simply can’t find anywhere else online. Expect to deal with annoying pop-ups, however.

One major drawback of this site is that you can only download subtitles for movies and shows that you can find on video-sharing sites. There are plenty of free ad-supported movies on YouTube , however.

How do I use subtitles?

After you download subtitles, which should be .SRT files, open the app you’ll be using to watch the show or movie. Within the menu, there is an option for subtitles. Navigate to your SRT file to upload it to sync it automatically.

Please note that some media players don’t support subtitles unless they’re already inserted into the video. For instance, DVDs that have subtitles would be fine. Always check that your media player supports SRT files.

Why are my subtitles out of sync?

Subtitle files aren’t always perfect. If they’re off by even a few milliseconds, it’s incredibly annoying to deal with. However, you can manually adjust the timing to get your files back in sync. In most cases, if you download subtitles, you’ll mainly encounter SRT, SUB, and IDX files. For single languages, SRT files are best. If you want multiple languages in a single file, you’ll need SUB and IDX files. However, it’s important to note that SRT is the more widely accepted format.

Naturally, this excludes subtitle formats that are already hard encoded into a file.

A few other formats you may find include SSA, TXT, VTT, SBV, TTML, and DFXP. Some of these are specific to certain sites and apps. For instance, SBV is what YouTube supports if you’re uploading subtitles. A plain text file, or TXT, will serve you well when an SRT isn’t available.

How can I get my subtitles to load automatically?

Many media players that support external subtitles load them automatically. You only have to do one thing: name the subtitle file the same as your video. For example, if I was loading subtitles for XYZ Movie, my video might be called “xyz_movie.” I’d need to also name the subtitle file “xyz_movie.” There’s no need to change any file extensions. Most free media players will automatically detect and load subtitle files as long as you title them properly.

For the most part, all you have to do is copy the exact filename of the movie or TV video file and paste it as the subtitle file's filename. This works for nearly all video file formats (e.g., AVI, MKV, MP4) and the most common subtitle file formats (e.g., SCC, SRT, SUB, VTT). You also have to make sure both the video file and the subtitle file are in the same location.

With that done, launch the video file and your media player should automatically load the subtitle file.

What if it doesn't? Or what if your video file has a built-in subtitle track and you want to override it with the subtitle file? In that case, you'll have to manually load the subtitle file and switch the track in your media player.

To manually load a subtitle file, even one that isn't in the same location as the video file:

• Launch the video file in VLC.
• In the top toolbar, select Subtitles > Add Subtitle File .
• Navigate to the subtitle file, select it, and click Open .

You can load multiple subtitle tracks (as many as you want) and switch between them at will. This is particularly useful for certain movie files, especially those in the MKV format, which come with many subtitles in various languages. This is one of the many great secret features of VLC Player .

To switch to a different subtitle track, go to Subtitles > Su b Track > Track # .

How to Download Subtitles Directly Through VLC Player

The above sites are great. However, if you prefer subtitles for everything, then downloading them by hand every time can get cumbersome.

Happily, some media players support the ability to search and download subtitles right within the app, and some can even automatically find subtitles based on the filename of what you're watching.

Again, we recommend VLC Player, which uses a default plugin called VLsub to search for subtitles on OpenSubtitles.

• Open VLC Player and play the video
• Click View > VLsub from the top toolbar.
• For the most accurate result, select Search by hash as this searches based on the exact video you're playing. Alternatively, manually write the name in the Title field (use the other fields like Subtitles language and Season as needed) and click Search by name .
• Select your chosen subtitle file from the list.
• Before proceeding, be aware that any existing subtitle files will be overwritten without confirmation, so move them to another folder if you still need them.
• When you're ready, click Download selection .

The subtitle file gets placed in the same folder as your video, with a matching name. This means that VLC player will automatically load the subtitle file when you play the video. In the toolbar, go to Subtitle > Sub Track to toggle the subtitles.

Mobile Subtitles Are Easy Thanks to VLC Player
