Current Clinical Trials

What is a clinical trial.

A clinical trial helps researchers at University Health learn whether a new test or treatment is safe and effective. Clinical trials can be designed to help prevent, detect or treat diseases.

Some trials are aimed at evaluating a new kind of medicine or dosage. Others focus on medical devices or managing other factors in the course of your treatment. All clinical trials help advance knowledge and improve medical care.

What You Should Know about Clinical Trials

Participating in a clinical trial is voluntary. Your provider may recommend that you try a new approach to your treatment. Or you may have a condition that fits what researchers are studying. You should always know that your participation in a clinical trial is completely up to you.

To join a clinical trial, you’ll have to meet certain criteria that determine if you can participate. These standards are usually based on factors like age, gender and your medical history.

Also, each trial has a protocol, or a study plan that’s carefully designed to outline details like how long the trial will last, the schedule of tests or procedures, and medications and dosages. Protocols help you know more about what to expect and whether you’d like to participate.

CURRENT STUDIES

Who can be in a clinical trial?

Healthy people and/or people with the condition being studied can volunteer. Each study has its own set of strict requirements for volunteers.

Volunteer requirements such as age, specific medical condition and current medications will be determined by our examining physician prior to participating in the study.

All benefits as well as any risks will be explained to volunteers during the informed consent process.

What if the medication does not work for me?

Your health and welfare is always of primary importance and certainly while you are on a clinical trial. If the study medication is not helping your medical problem the physician will take you off the program.

What if I already have a doctor?

You will continue to see your doctor for all non-study related illness and to discuss your participation in a clinical study. At the end of the study, with your permission, we will provide copies of all testing performed on you to your physician.

We encourage you to discuss your possible participation in a clinical trial with your physician. Our physicians are available to answer any questions they may have regarding the trial.

Do I have to pay? Will you bill my insurance company?

No, there is no charge for any study medication, exams or testing. In most studies, you will be paid for your time and travel.

You are not required to have medical insurance coverage. We do not collect any insurance information from you and we do not bill your insurance.

A placebo is an inactive substance, which may be given to some of the study participants in a clinical trial as a control, so that researches can verify that any results can be attributed to the drug being tested assist in comparing the effects of the active study treatment.

When a drug company wants to license a new drug, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency, and other regulatory authorities require that the drug be tested on a large number of patients to make sure the drug is both safe and effective. The company must then select a number of medical research centers or clinics around the country that can recruit appropriate participants for the study. These studies have several development stages including early/phase I, phase IIB-III, and phase IIIB-IV research, with most phases requiring volunteers to help ensure efficacy and safety.

Clinical trials are important to ensure individuals receive safe and effective treatments for their health conditions, from heart disease to headaches, covering therapeutic areas like Central Nervous System, Cardiovascular, General Medicine, Rare Disease, and Oncology.

They provide the means to develop new treatments that are as effective, more effective, or safer than treatments already on the market; they enable researchers to discover new therapeutic uses for currently available medications, and they make it possible to develop innovative treatments for conditions that currently have no treatment.

People participate in clinical trials for various reasons, including health, financial and societal reasons. Volunteers who participate in clinical trials help to further advance medical science, which can help others in the future.

Clinical trials provide volunteers with free health and medical information. In addition, financial compensation for time and travel expenses may be provided to study participants.

Clinical trials are performed around the world in various settings, including doctors’ offices, hospitals, research centers and teaching institutions. Since most trials require periodic visits to the study physician, volunteers should take the location of the facility into consideration when deciding whether to participate in a clinical trial.

Our facility is located at: Worldwide Clinical Trials 2455 Northeast Loop 410, Suite 150 San Antonio, TX 78217 Tel: +1 210 635 1500 Fax: +1 210 635 1646

Most clinical trials are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies, federal health agencies, medical foundations, medical centers, and universities; however, physicians may sponsor some clinical trials, particularly when the trial evaluates a currently available treatment for a condition other than for what it was previously approved.

There’s no cost for joining a clinical trial. Study medication, as well as study-related tests and procedures are usually provided at no charge to study participants. In some cases, you may be compensated for your time and travel expenses related to study participation.

In the interest of safety, the participant must fully inform the study physician about past and current medical conditions, illnesses, and medications, follow the prescribed treatment plan and attend scheduled visits. Study personnel will explain other study-specific responsibilities.

Informed consent is the process by which a potential study participant agrees to participate in a trial after being provided with information about the study and treatment. It includes an explanation of what’s involved in the trial, the duration of the study, the frequency and length of the required visits, as well as the known risks and benefits associated with the study treatment.

Participation in a clinical trial is completely voluntary. All questions about the study should be answered to the participant’s satisfaction before an informed consent form (ICF) is signed. Participants have the right to refuse participation or to withdraw their consent at any time during the study without penalty.

The wishes and best interest of the participant are considered at all times. Throughout the trial, participants will be provided with any new information that may affect their decision to continue their involvement in the study. In addition, the study physician may withdraw a participant at any time, without consent, if it becomes evident that it’s not in their best interest to continue.

Many US clinical trial opportunities can be found on ClinicalTrials.gov , and clinical trials taking place in the greater EU region can be found on the European Union Drug Regulating Authorities Clinical Trial Database ( EudraCT ).

Currently sitting in the waiting room 36 minutes past appointment time. Technician is not even on campus yet. This is the 2nd time we've had to wait on this particular Technician. If I have to be on time to my appointment or I get rescheduled, then staff should be on time. I understand emergency. But from what I can tell this is a daily habit.

I wish I wasn't the first to review and knew the headaches and time sinks I was getting into before being fool enough to get involved with a study through Pinnacle Clinical Research. This office does clinical research related to liver disease, which includes compensated studies. Unfortunately, they are disorganized and requires you to spend hours and months trying to get the compensation owed. And it's worse if you need travel reimbursement, which studies often allow for "reasonable travel" but they refuse to provide details. Depending on who you talk to, it's a different story. If they promise you the check is being written, you hear an hour later that the request for payment was just submitted. And the check is in the mail? Maybe, but it'll arrive two weeks after it's promised, and still be wrong. They also forget to schedule appointments, and those unscheduled appointments aren't reimbursable according to their accountant. Plus it's not a CapMetro friendly location so if you don't or can't drive, you're going to spending $$$ on top of all the time (even short visits are at least two hours, mostly to watch someone flip through a binder and leave the room 5-6 times to get something else. They won't pay the mandatory booking fee if you opt for ride shares, and you must provide itemized receipts. They are about to move to a slightly more CapMetro location. But know what you're going into if you get referred to them for study participation. they still owe me money and I have had to remind them about what's supposed to be included. If you're desperate and choose to participate, be aware that they only see patients in the morning, and those visits will take at least two hours, and only on weekdays.
