LIE 5: “We’ve already turned it around [on the economy].”

Burnett quoted some tough figures on the economy, noting that the cost of buying a home had doubled, and “Real income when you account for inflation is actually down since you took office.”

LIE 7: “There’s corporate greed going out there. And it’s got to be dealt with.”

Labor costs increased 4.2% between 2023 and 2024.

They increased 5.1% from 2021 to 2022.

The costs of everything, from supplies to shipping, rent and taxes, have gone up.

Because of the huge amount of government money injected into the system, minimum-wage increases by California and other states, and pent-up demand by consumers.

How is Biden going to “deal with it”?

LIE 8: “[Inflation] was 9% when I came to office.”

This is the lie of the night.

Biden continues to pretend that the US was in terrible shape when he took office, when it was already on the rebound — thanks to Trump’s Warp Speed project that vaccinated people quickly against COVID.

Inflation was a measly 1.4% in January 2021.

Then Biden went on a first-year drunken-sailor spending spree, and inflation skyrocketed.

LIE 9: “They have the money to spend. It angers them and angers me that they have to spend more.”

They have the money to spend?

According to Bankrate, 76% of adults making less than $50,000 a year are living from paycheck to paycheck, an increase from 71% the year before that.

Biden need only watch the nightly news to see people cutting back on groceries, gas — even trips to McDonald’s — because their spending power has decreased.

LIE 10: “Civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs, and other ways in which they go after population centers.”

It’s libel to suggest that Israel is deliberating targeting population centers .

Hamas embeds itself among the civilian population, creating bases inside hospitals and digging tunnels under residential apartments.

Israel has been warning the people of Rafah for more than a week to move to a safe zone outside the city.

They do not “go after” population centers, they work hard to minimize deaths while stopping the terrorists who kidnapped, raped and murdered Israeli civilians.

LIE 11: “We’re not walking away from Israel’s security. We’re walking away from Israel’s ability to wage war in those areas.”

But defeating Hamas is integral to Israel’s security.

How does Biden suggest Israel win the war if it leaves the last stronghold of the terrorist group untouched?

Someone had better tell all the celebrities and elites in the Democratic Party who claim they are going to move if Trump is re-elected, or say they “don’t know their country anymore,” or who burn American flags as they rally for Hamas .

Biden’s chiding of Trump with this line would carry more weight if he said it to his own voters.

LIE 14: “I travel around the world, other world leaders, know what they all say, 80% of them, ‘You gotta win. My democracy is at stake.’ ”

Maybe we can’t say this is absolutely a lie, but it sure sounds like one of those statements for which the press loves to go after Trump.

Are other world leaders really pulling Biden aside after his nap and saying “democracy is at stake” if he loses? Give us a break.

LIE 15: “Then [Trump] is going to put in a 10% tax that’s going to increase average Americans’ cost $1,500 a year.”

Trump has proposed no such tax. Perhaps Biden means Trump’s plan for a 10% tariff on imported goods, which may or may not cost Americans more money.

You know who else is considering imposing tariffs? Biden. Just this week, under the headline “Biden Looks to Thwart Surge of Chinese Imports,” the New York Times notes that China is using unfair business practices and Biden wants to counter it.

3-hour Tom Brady roast on Netflix has one seemingly tense moment

Inglewood, Calif. — Three months before Tom Brady gets roasted by critics as Fox Sports' top NFL analyst, he took his share of barbs from comedians, former teammates and his longtime coach Sunday night during a made-for-streaming comedy live event on Netflix.

And it's safe to say after the one liners and jokes Brady heard during three hours of "The Greatest Roast of All Time" at The Forum, he'll do just fine.

"It's like a football game. You run with a game plan, and then you get to see kind of how the strategy goes, and then you adjust on the fly," Brady said before the event. "This is what a locker room has been like for me for all these years. So it's not like I'm used to people not making fun of me."

Comedian Nikki Glaser, whose monologue was among the funniest of the night, depicted the roast as "the comedians' Super Bowl" due to the competition level being ramped up because everyone wanted to one-up each other.

Brady sustained more blitzes and pressure than he did during an average NFL game as an impressive lineup of comedians, former teammates and opponents took the stage . Host Kevin Hart said before the event that no topic was off limits, and Hart went on the offensive early with jokes about Brady's ex-wife, Gisele Bündchen.

"Gisele gave you an ultimatum. She said you retire or we're done. When you got a chance to go 8-9 and all it will cost you is your wife and your kids, you've got to do what you've got to do," Hart said, referring to Brady coming out of a brief retirement in 2022 for one more season.

Brady apparently objects to joke about Robert Kraft

The only time Brady objected to a joke was when Jeff Ross made a reference to Patriots owner Robert Kraft and massages. In 2019, Kraft originally received a misdemeanor charge that he paid for sex at a Florida massage parlor. Prosecutors later dropped the charge after courts blocked the use of video from cameras installed by police inside the massage parlors.

Brady walked up to Ross and said in his ear "don't say that (stuff) again", but it was clearly caught on the microphone and heard by those watching the roast at home. It wasn't heard by those in attendance.

CBSSports.com's John Breech writes that Ross responded by pointing at Kraft and saying, "OK, OK. He's having fun, look at him."

"It's certainly possible this was all part of the act, but it definitely felt like Brady was legitimately upset with the joke. On a night where there were plenty of uncomfortable jokes, this seemed to be the only one that truly got under Brady's skin," Breech observed.

Brady and Belichick team up again

Later, Kraft and former Patriots coach Bill Belichick did a shot together on stage after some coaxing from Hart.

Belichick was fired in January after 24 seasons with the Patriots, and lots has been written about friction between the six-time winning Super Bowl coach and owner over the past couple of years.

After joking about this being like a reunion and "unlike many family reunions, there are some people I am desperately trying to avoid," Kraft praised Belichick for what the two accomplished.

"I want to say this is the greatest coach in the history of the game that did what no one else has done. And having Tom Brady and him was the greatest honor the good Lord gave me," Kraft said.

It wasn't the first shot (of alcohol) that Belichick took. Rob Gronkowski got Belichick and Brady to do a shot together after his monologue. Gronkowski celebrated by spiking his shot glass.

Belichick appeared at the beginning of the roast during a pre-taped segment when he told Brady that he was "starting the roast" instead of Drew Bledsoe. Brady replaced Bledsoe in 2001 when Bledsoe was injured in a Week 2 game against the Jets and led the Patriots to their first Super Bowl title that season.

"For all of you out there who think about who's responsible for the Patriots success during the time Tom and I was together - was it Tom or me - in reality the truth of the matter was it was both of us because of me," Belichick said.

Brady did have some fun at Belichick's expense, though, near the end of the show.

"I've been out of the game for a minute, so I'm curious, how many Super Bowl rings have you won since I left?," Brady said. "Maybe it's not just the guy on the sideline. When I go to the Indy 500, I don't ask the winning driver, `Hey, you gassed up your car?"

Brady was ready

Hart said before the show that he thought Brady was in a great mindset going into the event. Brady did come in well prepared, going over his monologue with a group of people, including those at Fox Sports.

"You have to be able to laugh at yourself and I love that he is doing in this forum," Hart said. "I love that he is embracing the things that some people think he runs away from. It is a celebration of greatness and we are doing it in a fun way."

Bledsoe also said that Brady has had a sense of humor, but that this was a different stage.

"I thought he was very brave. There's plenty of material to make fun of him on," Bledsoe said. "The truth, is when you're a professional athlete, roasting each other is kind of what we do every day in the locker room. And so, you better have thick skin going in. Now, people get to laugh along with it."

Witnesses walk through how bills were paid at Trump Org. Here’s what happened in court and why it matters

In the hush money trial against the former president, prosecutors called two witnesses Monday who worked in accounting in the Trump Organization: Jeffrey McConney , a former Trump Org. controller, and Deborah Tarasoff , an accounts payable supervisor.

McConney walked the jury through the paper trail that showed how executives organized and paid back Michael Cohen for the money he sent to Stormy Daniels’ attorney. This is important because at the heart of the trial — the falsification of business records — are the payments to Cohen, which were listed as retainer fees.

Tarasoff described in more detail how checks were paid at the organization and when Trump’s approval was needed for payments.

Here’s what happened in court today:

Jeffrey McConney

McConney testified that he had a conversation with Allen Weisselberg , former chief financial officer of the Trump Org., about a need to “reimburse” Cohen . McConney then showed jurors 12 checks, each for $35,000 , that were paid to Cohen in 2017. Cohen sent invoices for those checks and asked that the payments be listed as part of a “retainer agreement.” As previous testimony in the trial revealed, there was no actual retainer for Cohen.
McConney also explained to the jury why Cohen was paid $420,000 in all and how each check was cut, first from Trump's revocable trust and then from his personal account .
The jury also saw business records relating to the payment to Cohen that are tied to several of the 34 falsifying business records charges against Trump. The records show several rows and columns organized to record the payments.
On cross-examination, Trump attorney Emil Bove questioned McConney about his knowledge of Trump's role in these payments. "President Trump did not ask you to do any of the things you described?" Bove asked. "He did not," McConney testified. He said he was told to do this work by Weisselberg. McConney also said he did not know if Cohen did legal work for Trump in 2017.

Deborah Tarasoff

As accounts payable supervisor, Tarasoff said she would get an approved invoice , enter it into the system, cut the check and get it signed. Tarasoff testified that Trump or his sons needed to approve invoices of more than $10,000 and Trump was the only person who authorized checks from his personal account , including during his presidency.
Tarasoff said Trump would sign the checks by hand. She said they were signed in black Sharpie . Tarasoff said Trump did not always sign the checks, even when Weisselberg approved them. He would “write 'void' and send it back,” she noted.
Before Trump was president, Tarasoff testified that she “ would cut the check , put it with the backup and bring it over to Rhona (Graff) who would bring it in to Mr. Trump to sign,” referring to Trump’s former longtime assistant. The invoices and the checks were stapled together, she said, with the check on top of the invoice. When Trump became president, Tarasoff said they would mail checks to the White House .
The jury was shown the voucher form that said "retainer" in the description line that Tarasoff said she obtained from the invoice. Tarasoff also confirmed each of the $35,000 checks with Trump’s signature were sent to Cohen.
On cross-examination, she acknowledged that she was not present for conversations between Trump and Weisselberg about the payments. She also said she worked with Trump's children Eric, Don Jr. and Ivanka Trump, over the years. Tarasoff still works for Trump Org., which means she works for Eric Trump, who was also in the courtroom today.

What’s next: Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass estimated they still need about two weeks from tomorrow to make their case. He stresses that's a very rough estimate. The defense will also get an opportunity to call its witnesses after that if they choose.

Judge Juan Merchan ruled that Trump again violated his gag order for his comments about the jury.

Gag order hearing: Judge Juan Merchan found Trump in contempt for violating the gag order again, specifically concerning comments he made about the makeup of the jury in this case. Prosecutors had alleged Trump violated the gag order on four separate occasions . The judge ruled that the three other comments did not violate the order. "Going forward this court will have to consider a jail sanction," Merchan said, noting the $1,000 fine is not stopping him, but he told Trump “incarceration is truly a last resort .”

Remember: Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business record s. Each criminal charge relates to a specific entry among the business records of the Trump Organization, according to the indictment . Prosecutors allege that Trump allegedly disguised the transaction to Daniels as a legal payment and falsified business records numerous times to “promote his candidacy” in the 2016 election.

What Deborah Tarasoff said in just over an hour of testimony

Deborah Tarasoff, who worked in the Trump Organization accounting department, testifies on Monday.

Deborah Tarasoff, an employee in the Trump Organization’s accounting department, testified for just over an hour Monday about the check-writing process at the company.

Tarasoff helped arrange the 12 checks for $35,000, each signed by Donald Trump and sent to former attorney Michael Cohen in 2017 as reimbursement for the $130,000 hush money payment to Stormy Daniels.

She testified that after 2015 any invoice over $10,000 had to be approved by Trump or one of his sons. When she created the checks, Trump would sign them, she testified — or, if he disapproved, he would write “void” on them, she said.

"If he didn’t want to sign it, he didn’t sign it," she said. She knew he was the one signing them because, "It was signed in Sharpie and it was black and that’s what he uses."

She testified she had no decision-making authority but followed instructions, including getting invoices approved, entering them into the system, cutting the checks and getting them signed.

On cross-examination, she acknowledged that she was not present for conversations between Trump and former Trump Org. CFO Allen Weisselberg about the payments.

Trump attorney Todd Blanche also noted that Deborah Tarasoff was not present for conversations between former Trump Org. CFO Allen Weisselberg and Donald Trump.

"When Mr. Weisselberg on some of the emails or Mr. McConney told you to go ahead and pay it, generate a check, you didn’t get permission from President Trump himself, correct?" Blanche said.

"Correct," she said.

She clarified with Blanche that all the checks to Michael Cohen shown in court were signed and that she doesn't know what happened with the checks after she mailed them to the White House.

But she did receive them back in the mail signed.

Blanche follows up with more questions about invoices

Attorney Todd Blanche is asking Deborah Tarasoff if Trump was focused on getting ready to be president during the start of 2017.

"I think so," Tarasoff replies.

Blanche follows up and asks whether the requests to pay for invoices "happens all the time?" Yes, Tarasoff says.

Blanche is trying to rehabilitate earlier testimony from Tarasoff that Trump would sometimes void checks for invoices he didn't want to pay. "If he didn’t want to sign it, he didn’t sign it," she testified earlier.

Fresh from his criminal trial in New York, Donald J. Trump delivered a frustrated and often obscene speech, lasting roughly 75 minutes, at a Republican National Committee donor retreat in Florida on Saturday, attacking one of the prosecutors pursuing him and comparing President Biden’s administration to the Nazis.

“These people are running a Gestapo administration,” Mr. Trump told donors who attended the event at Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Palm Beach, Fla., according to an audio recording obtained by The New York Times. “And it’s the only thing they have. And it’s the only way they’re going to win, in their opinion, and it’s actually killing them. But it doesn’t bother me.”

Before making the comparison, Mr. Trump baselessly insisted that the various indictments against him and his allies in several states were being orchestrated by the Biden administration.

He said that, before his indictment, he was gentler on Mr. Biden, despite the outcome of the 2020 election. “You have to respect the office of the presidency,” Mr. Trump said. “And I never talk to him like this.”

Mr. Trump entered the event to the recording of the national anthem that he made with a group of people arrested in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob seeking to disrupt the certification of Mr. Biden’s electoral college win. Mr. Trump praised the song.

In his speech, he complained repeatedly about the criminal trial in Manhattan, to which he will return on Monday, insisted that Democrats use “welfare” to cheat in elections and said he would need an attorney general with “courage” as he mocked his former attorney general, William P. Barr, who recently endorsed Mr. Trump after having spoken critically of him since the administration ended.

Mr. Trump also indulged in conspiracy theories around his 2020 loss, and said that his handpicked chairman of the Republican National Committee, Michael Whatley, would prevent “cheating” in the upcoming election.

Mr. Trump’s comments about welfare to wealthy donors at the event called to mind remarks caught on tape by Mitt Romney during his 2012 presidential run, when he dismissed 47 percent of voters as off-limits because they did not pay taxes.

“When you are Democrat, you start off essentially at 40 percent because you have civil service, you have the unions and you have welfare,” Mr. Trump said on Saturday. “And don’t underestimate welfare. They get welfare to vote, and then they cheat on top of that — they cheat.”

But Mr. Trump focused more on his own legal jeopardy, as he faces four different indictments and 88 criminal charges. On Friday, he had to listen in court to his former communications adviser, Hope Hicks, testify in the trial in which he is accused of falsifying business records to cover up hush-money payments made to a porn star.

He also spent several minutes acknowledging Rod Blagojevich, the former Democratic governor of Illinois whose lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of corruption charges was commuted by Mr. Trump, and who was at the R.N.C. event.

The former president said that he came to the decision to issue the pardon after seeing Mr. Blagojevich’s wife on television advocating his release, and that it was sealed that he would intervene when he learned that James B. Comey, the former F.B.I. director whom Mr. Trump fired amid an investigation into Mr. Trump and his campaign, was connected to the Blagojevich investigation.

Mr. Trump also mocked the physical appearance of Jack Smith, the special counsel who has indicted him twice.

“He’s unattractive both inside and out,” Mr. Trump said. “This is one unattractive dude.” He then used two expletives to describe Mr. Smith.

He praised House Speaker Mike Johnson, who, in his own remarks, said the nation needed “a strong man” in the White House.

At another point, Mr. Trump said that if anyone wanted to donate $1 million to the R.N.C. on the spot, “I will let you come up and speak.” He sounded disappointed until someone accepted the invitation.

Mr. Trump laid blame for the slim margin in the House on the issue of abortion, after he appointed the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, for which he has repeatedly taken credit. “We had a rough thing because of the, you know, the issue of abortion largely. I think we would have had 45 seats more,” Mr. Trump said.

The meandering remarks drew a sharp contrast with the specifics provided by Mr. Trump’s top advisers at a presentation earlier on Saturday. His advisers said that Mr. Trump’s campaign and the party were projected to raise $76.2 million in April, according to two people who attended the briefing.

Mr. Trump’s three top advisers — Susie Wiles, Chris LaCivita and Tony Fabrizio — briefed donors, presented a slide show and took questions afterward, the attendees said. The attendees were not authorized to speak publicly about the event, which was a closed-door briefing and gathering for party donors.

Mr. Trump’s advisers presented a bullish case for the candidate that included the possibility of expanding the electoral map to include the Democratic-leaning states of Minnesota and Virginia. They also noted that Mr. Trump has remained mostly ahead in polls even while being outspent by President Biden, just as the former president was outspent in the primary by his rivals.

The Federal Election Commission will not receive fund-raising reports until later this month, meaning the numbers can’t be verified until then. In March, Mr. Trump and his allied groups reported raising $65.6 million — a significant amount, but still well below what President Biden and his affiliated outside groups have raised.

The slide show presentation included three different electoral college maps, the attendees said. The first was dismissed as “the media’s version,” which included seven swing states: Nevada, Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina across the Southwest and the Sun Belt, plus Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin in the industrial north.

A second slide described “the actual current reality” as only having three swing states: Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

And a third slide described an “expanded reality” in which both Minnesota and Virginia would be in play for Mr. Trump — an ambitious view of states not widely seen as among the most competitive, but in which the Trump team insists the former president has gained ground.

Mr. Trump’s advisers also described some of their strategy for the general election in the presentation, including reaching 2016 levels of support with white voters and expanding support among Black and Latino voters, particularly among urban men.

The campaign strategists also outlined a plan to prevent the kinds of losses that occurred in 2022 that have been linked to the issue of abortion and the backlash from the Supreme Court’s overturning of federal abortion rights before the midterm elections.

Mr. Trump has proudly claimed ownership of the end of Roe v. Wade as the president who appointed a conservative supermajority to the highest court in the country. But he has struggled to answer questions about it since, waffling in discussions with advisers about whether to back a national ban, before ultimately saying in a video he posted a few weeks ago that it’s up to states to decide how to handle the issue.
