What is a dissertation methodology.

A well-written methodology chapter is essential in establishing the credibility and validity of your research, as it allows other researchers to reproduce your study and build upon your findings . In this guide, we will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to write a comprehensive and well-organized methodology chapter that will effectively communicate the methodology you used in your research. 

  • The methodology explains your methodological approach and explains what you did and how , and why .
  • The methodology section allows the reader to critically evaluate a study's overall credibility . 
  • The purpose is to give another researcher enough information to replicate the study and obtain similar results.
  • Methods and methodology are not synonyms (overarching approach vs  specific tools and procedures used to collect and analyse data).

The methodology chapter, as any other chapters of your dissertation except the introduction and conclusion chapters, consists of 3 main sections: introduction, main body and conclusion/summary.

Introduction chosen (How are you dealing with the research problem?) and state the (What is included? How is the chapter organised?)
Main body (What is your research approach/strategy? Why? How do you intend sampling your target population? Why?) (How do you propose to collect your data? Why have you chosen to collect your data that way?) (How are you going to analyse your findings?)  (What are the limitations or problems with your practical research? (e.g. limitations in your chosen strategy or problems getting access to your research subjects?) Have you faced the twin issues of ? (That is, are the research choices you made appropriate and can your work be trusted? How does your research comply with the School ?) 
Conclusion or Summary of the key points.

The sections included in the main body depend on the type of research and the type of dissertation. For example:

  • In the traditional dissertation , it is commonly a separate chapter preceding the Results chapter.
  • In topic-based dissertations , the Methodology chapter might have a different title such as ‘Conducting Research’.
  • In experiment-based or dissertations by compilation , each study or experiment might contain its own methodology or methods section. 

Step 1: Explain your research design/approach

This commonly includes a restatement of the research aim(s) , a justification of choice of research methods , overview of specific method(s) used .

Step 2: Explain your methods of data collection

This involves explaining how the research was conducted and how the data were obtained . It requires a detailed description of processes and procedures and a justification of the reasons for doing so . This might include describing:

  • How was the data collection tool designed
  • How participants were obtained and how was the sample drawn
  • The location in which the data collection took place
  • The themes covered during the data collection or any variables and measures
  • Any piloting, adjustments made and reasons behind those
  • Ethical considerations and any obstacles faced and how those were addressed

Step 3: Explain your methods of data analysis

This involves explaining how you processed and analysed the data. However, do not start discussing the results unless you are combining results and discussion into one chapter (commonly seen in qualitative research). For example, you might want to include:

  • How you prepared the data before analysis (e.g., checking for missing data, removing outliers)
  • The software used to analyse the data (e.g., SPSS, Atlas.ti)
  • The methods used to analyse the data (e.g., regression analysis, thematic analysis)

Spend the bulk of your time describing a whole realm of research strategies.  Focus on describing your research strategy referring to .
Fail to justify your chosen research strategy. Justify why this strategy is the most appropriate .
Misunderstand the nature of qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods research.  Consider the objectives of your research project and determine which approach (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods) aligns best with your .
Produce a long descriptive monologue on the different ways that data can be collected. Identify, describe, and your data collection techniques.
Fail to provide detail on how data was analysed. Explain the of how you analysed your data.
Ignore limitations or potential problems     Outline limitations and potential problems, but or how those were litigated.
Fail to link methodology adequately to methodological literature.  Include to justify the choice of methodology, methods, and processes.

Writing a Results Chapter

The results chapter is a crucial section of any piece of research, as it presents and interprets the findings obtained from the study. This chapter allows you to communicate the outcomes of your investigation, analyse the data, and draw meaningful conclusions . Crafting an effective results chapter requires careful planning, organization, and attention to detail. This guide aims to provide you with a step-by-step approach to writing a results chapter that effectively communicates your research findings.

  • The results section of your dissertation is where you report the findings of your study based upon the information gathered as a result of the methodology you applied.
  • The results section should simply state the findings , without bias or interpretation, and arranged in a logical sequence . 
  • The results section should always be written in the past tense . 
  • The page length of this section is set by the amount and types of data to be reported. Try to be concise and use non-textual elements .
  • Avoid providing data that is not critical to answering the research question(s). 

The results chapter, as any other chapters of your dissertation except the introduction and conclusion chapters, consists of 3 main sections: introduction, main body and conclusion/summary.

Introduction

This might include:

  • A brief reminder of the methodological approach or methods.
  • A preview of the chapter: outline the organisation and state the scope (What is included? How is the chapter organised?)

The order of results can vary.  Some suggestions are:

  • From most important to least important.
  • As a logical response to the research questions or problems you are trying to answer or solve.  
  • If you are using a range of methods or a number of experimental elements , group the method/procedure together with the relevant results. 
  • In quantitative research , the descriptive statistics are generally presented first, then the results of each of the hypotheses or research questions that were tested.
  • The information in the results section should be organised to show how the data tests the research questions or hypotheses , and should be presented sequentially to respond to each research question or hypothesis.

Conclusion or Chapter Summary

  • A brief summary of the key results.
  • Signpost how these will be discussed in the following chapter (leads to your discussion chapter).

Describe the findings of the study, but do not start to interpret the results . This will take place in the discussion section, which comes next, unless you decide to combine results and discussion, which is common in qualitative research.

Presenting Qualitative Results

  • Structure your results around key themes .
  • For each theme, make general observations about what the data showed.
  • Support these points with direct quotations .
  • If possible, include a brief conclusion (‘so what?’) to the observation and highlight any links with other findings.
  • Repeat this process as many times as necessary.
  • Further information can be included in an appendix .

Presenting Quantitative Results

  • Structure your results around your research sub-questions .
  • For each sub-question, present the relevant results , including any statistical analysis you conducted, and briefly evaluate their significance. 
  • Highlight the most important trends , differences, and relationships among the data, but do not speculate on their meaning or consequences.
  • If you have results that are not directly relevant to answering your questions, or any extra information that will help the reader understand how you gathered the data, you can include them in an appendix .

The description of tables and figures in academic written texts commonly includes two different elements:

  • Location or summary statement: identifies the table or figure and indicates its content.
  • Highlighting statement or statements: point out and describe the relevant or significant data.

Dos and don'ts of using tables and figures

Do not:   Instead:
Include excessive or unnecessary tables and figures.   Only use tables and figures when and to present complex data or detailed information.
Use tables or figures as a substitute for proper explanation and interpretation in the text. Refer to tables and figures and discuss their significance.
Describe all the information on the table or figure. Provide a brief explanation of the .
Include a table or figure without providing a label (e.g., Figure 15. Social Skills Frequencies) Put a label for tables and (e.g. diagrams, graphs, photographs). The label should describe in a few words the content of the table or figure.
Mix tables and figures.   Make sure that tables and figures are . There should be two numbering series: one for tables and one for figures (e.g., Table 1, Table 2 AND Figure 1, Figure 2)
Include tables or figures without introducing them in the text or discussing them.  Place tables and figures
Just ‘plonk’ a table or figure into your writing. You need to refer to its existence and relevance to your argument in the preceding text.  Refer to the table or figure by in your writing (e.g., Table 6 shows that…; This can be seen in Figure 4)
Restructure data from an information source into another format (e.g. a graph, a flowchart) without referencing the author of your information.  Provide a to a source if the table or figure is from or adapted from an outside source. If you have created the table or image yourself from your own data collection, you must still use a number and label, but no reference is required.
Use poor-quality images or illegible fonts. Ensure that tables and figures .

The discussion chapter of a dissertation is an essential component that showcases your ability to analyse and interpret your research findings, draw meaningful conclusions, and provide valuable insights into the broader academic and practical implications of your study. This guide aims to provide you with a comprehensive overview of how to write a compelling and well-structured discussion chapter that strengthens the overall impact of your dissertation.

  • Explains what the results mean;
  • Interprets and discusses the data;
  • Compares it with other research (literature review);
  • Evaluates its importance;
  • Points out the limitations of your research;
  • Raises questions for future directions .

Tip: When writing your discussion chapter, you might want to revisit your literature review chapter and ensure that the relevant literature included in this chapter has been already presented in the Literature Review.

The discussion chapter, as any other chapters of your dissertation except the introduction and conclusion chapters, consists of 3 main sections: introduction, main body and conclusion/summary.

Your discussion should focus on explaining and evaluating your findings, displaying their connection to the previous literature (i.e., your literature review ) and research questions , as well as presenting a persuasive argument to support your overall conclusion.  While there are many different ways to write this section, you can focus your discussion around three key aspects:

  • Interpretations: What is the meaning behind the results?
  • Implications: Why do the results matter? Why are the results relevant?
  • Limitations: What can’t the results tell us? What are the constraints or limitations of the results in terms of what they can reveal?

This can be done following the 5 steps below:  

Step 1: Summarise your findings

You can begin this section by reiterating your research problem and providing a succinct overview of your main findings. Do not just repeat all the data that you have already reported in the previous chapter, instead present a clear statement that directly addresses your research questions.

Step 2: Interpret your findings

While the significance of your results may appear apparent to you, it is crucial to explicitly articulate their importance for your reader by demonstrating how they directly address your research question. The manner in which you interpret the data will vary depending on the type of research conducted. However, some common approaches to interpreting the data include:

  • Recognizing correlations, patterns, and relationships within the data
  • Analysing whether the results align with your expectations or support your hypotheses
  • Placing your findings within the context of prior research and established theories
  • Elucidating unexpected results and assessing their significance
  • Considering alternative explanations and presenting a compelling argument in favour of your position.

Step 3: Place your findings in context (literature review)

A helpful way to place your findings within context and identifying how your findings agree or disagree with the previous literature is to use a summary table such as the one below:

Single essays and exams less accurate than multiple   incorporating frequent and a variety of assessments with timely feedback could enhance student learning outcomes and improve the accuracy of assessments
This can result in a paragraph like: The importance of timely feedback in block has also been stressed by students and faculty as one of the reasons as to why single assessments at the end of the module, and more specifically exams, are the least accurate method in block delivery. Although exams were considered by some participants as necessary in certain disciplines, participants agreed that this assessment type does not show knowledge depth as indicated by Dang et al. (2022) and students might receive limited or no feedback as highlighted by Race (2015). Therefore, incorporating frequent and a variety of assessments with timely feedback into block delivery could enhance student learning outcomes and improve the accuracy of assessments.

Step 4: Acknowledge the limitations

Every piece of research has limitations and acknowledging these is crucial for establishing the credibility of the study. The purpose of discussing these limitations is not to highlight errors, but rather to provide an accurate understanding of the conclusions that can and cannot be drawn from the study, as well as to highlight further areas for research on the topic. Limitations might relate to your research design, methodological choices, or unforeseen challenges encountered during the research process. Here are some examples:

  • If the sample size was small or limited to a specific group of individuals, it is necessary to explain how the generalizability of the findings is constrained.
  • If difficulties were encountered during data collection or analysis, it is important to elucidate how these challenges might have impacted the results.
  • If there are potential confounding variables that could not be controlled, it is essential to acknowledge the potential effects they might have had.

Dissertation discussion is the chapter where you explore the relevance, significance, and meanings of your findings  – allowing you to showcase your talents in describing and analyzing the results of your study.

Here, you will be expected to demonstrate how your research findings  answer the  research questions  established or test the  hypothesis .

The arguments you assert in the dissertation analysis and discussions chapter lay the foundations of your conclusion . It is critically important to discuss the results in a precise manner.

To help you understand how to write a dissertation discussion chapter, here is the list of the main elements of this section so you stay on the right track when writing:

Steps of How to Write Dissertation Discussion Chapter

1. provide a summary of your findings.

Start your discussion by summarising the key findings of your research questions. Avoid repeating the information you have already stated in the previous chapters.

You will be expected to clearly express your interpretation of results to answer the research questions established initially in one or two paragraphs.

Here are some  examples of how to present the summary of your findings ;

  • “The data suggests that”,
  • “The results confirm that”,
  • “The analysis indicates that”,
  • “The research shows a relationship between”, etc.

2. Interpretations of Results

Your audience will expect you to provide meanings of the results, although they might seem obvious to you. The results and their interpretations should be linked to the research questions so the reader can understand the value your research has added to the literature.

There are many ways of interpreting the data, but your chosen approach to interpreting the data will depend on the  type of research involved . Some of the most common strategies employed include;

  • Describing how and why you ended up with unexpected findings and explaining their importance in detail
  • Relating your findings with previous studies conducted
  • Explaining your position with logical arguments when/if any alternative explanations are suggested
  • An in-depth discussion around whether or not the findings answered your research questions and successfully tested the hypothesis

Examples of how you can start your interpretation in the Discussion chapter are –

  • “Findings of this study contradict those of Allen et al. (2014) that”,
  • “Contrary to the hypothesized association,” “Confirming the hypothesis…”,
  • “The findings confirm that A is….. even though Allen et al. (2014) and Michael (2012) suggested B was …..”

3. Implications of your Study

What practical and theoretical implications will your study have for other researchers and the scientific community as a whole?

It is vital to relate your results to the knowledge in the existing literature so the readers can establish how your research will contribute to the existing data.

When thinking of the possible consequences of your findings, you should ask yourself these;

  • Are your findings in line with previous studies? What contribution did your research make to them?
  • Why are your results entirely different from other studies on the same topic?
  • Did your findings approve or contradict existing knowledge?
  • What are the practical implications of your study?

Remember that as the researcher, you should aim to let your readers know why your study will contribute to the existing literature. Possible ways of starting this particular section are;

  • “The findings show that A….. whereas Lee (2017) and John (2013) suggested that B”, “The results of this study completely contradict the claims made in theories”,
  • “These results are not in line with the theoretical perspectives”,
  • “The statistical analysis provides a new understanding of the relationship between A and B”,
  • “Future studies should take into consideration the findings of this study because”

4. Recognise the Limitations of your Research

Almost every academic research has some limitations. Acknowledging them will only add to your credibility as a scientific researcher.

In addition to the possible human errors, it’s important to take into account other factors that might have influenced the results of your study, including but not limited to unexpected research obstacles, specific methodological choices , and the overall research design.

Avoid mentioning any limitations that may not be relevant to your research aim, but clearly state the limitations that may have affected your results.

For example, if you used a sample size that included a tiny population, you may not generalise your results.

Similarly, obstacles faced in collecting data from the participants can influence the findings of your study. Make a note of all such  research limitations , but explain to the reader why your results are still authentic.

  • The small sample size limited the generalisability of the results.
  • The authenticity of the findings may have been influenced by….
  • The obstacles in collecting data resulted in…
  • It is beyond the framework of this research…

5. Provide Recommendations for Future Research

The limitations of your research work directly result in future recommendations. However, it should be noted that your recommendations for future research work should include the areas that your own work could not report so other researchers can build on them.

Sometimes the recommendations are a part of the  conclusion chapter . Some examples;

  • More research is needed to be performed….

The Purpose of Dissertation Discussion Chapter 

Remember that the discussion section of a dissertation is the heart of your research because a) it will indicate your stance on the topic of research, and b) it answers the research questions initially established in the Introduction chapter .

Every piece of information you present here will add value to the existing literature within your field of study. How you structured your findings in the preceding chapter will help you determine the best structure for your dissertation discussion section.

For example, it might be logical to structure your analysis/discussions by theme if you chose the pattern in your findings section.

But generally, discussion based on research questions is the more widely used  structure  in academia because this pattern clearly indicates how you have addressed the aim of your research.

Most UK universities require the supervisor or committee members to comment on the extent to which each research question has been answered. You will be doing them a great favour if you structure your discussion so that each research question is laid out separately.

Irrespective of whether you are  writing an essay, dissertation, or  chapter of a dissertation , all pieces of writing should start with an  introduction .

Once your readers have read through your study results, you might want to highlight the contents of the subsequent discussion as an introduction paragraph (summary of your results – as explained above).

Likewise, the discussion chapter is expected to end with a concluding paragraph – allowing you the opportunity to summarise your interpretations.

Presentation of graphs, tables, and figures.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, students spent days creating graphs and charts for their  statistical analysis work . Thanks to technology, you can produce even more accurate graphs and figures today in a shorter period.

Using  Microsoft Word, STATA, SPSS, Microsoft Excel  and other statistical analysis software, we can now draw  beautiful-looking figures, tables , and graphs with just a few clicks and make them appear in our document at the desired place. But there are downsides to being too dependent on technology.

Many students make the common mistake of using colours to represent variables when really they have to print their dissertation paper final copy in black and white.

Any colours on graphs and figures will eventually be viewed in the grayscale presentation. Recognizing different shades of grey on the same chart or graph can sometimes be a little confusing.

For example, green and purple appear as pretty much the same shade of grey on a line chat, meaning your chart will become unreadable to the marker.

Another trap you may fall into is the unintentional stuffing   of the dissertation chapter with graphs and figures. Even though it is essential to show numbers and statistics, you don’t want to overwhelm your readers with too many.

It may not be necessary to have a graph/table under each sub-heading. Only you can best judge whether or not you need to have a graph/table under a particular sub-heading as the writer.

Relating to Previous Chapters  

As a student, it can be challenging to develop your own analysis and discussion of results. One of the excellent discussion chapter requirements is to showcase your ability to relate previous research to your research results.

Avoid repeating the same information over and over. Many students fall into this trap which negatively affects the mark of their overall dissertation paper .

Concise and to-the-point information will help you effectively convey your point to the readers.

Although you must demonstrate how your findings relate to previous research, it is equally important to ensure you are not simply rewriting what has already been said in the introduction  and  literature review  chapters.

The best strategy is to use examples from previous sections to postulate an argument.

Hyperlinks are recommended to take the reader from one section to another. This is especially important for submitting electronic documents as .word or .pdf files. Hyperlinking is tedious and time-consuming, so you should allow for this in your dissertation timeline to avoid rushing in the closing stages.

Using Subsections and Subheadings

You might want to reflect on the structure of the discussion in your organizstion of the dissertation discussion chapter, and for that, you will need to create sub-sections.

It is essential to keep subsections to the point and as short as possible. Use a layer of subheadings if possible.

For example

Subsection 4.1 of Chapter 4- Discussion can be further divided into sections 4.1.1 and 4.2.2. After three numerical layers (4.1.1, 4.2.2, and 4.2.3), any subheadings need not appear in the contents table.

The titles of all subsections will appear on your table of contents  so choose the wordings carefully. A title too long or too short might confuse the reader. A one or two-word subheading will not give the reader enough information to understand the section.

Likewise, using a research question or long sentences in the subheading is not recommended. It might help to examine how other researchers and writers create these subheadings.

Critical Thinking

Your critical thinking skills are the crux of your dissertation discussion chapter. You will do yourself a great disservice if you fail to put the critical thinking element into the equation.

After all, this exercise aims to showcase clarity in your thoughts and arguments. Markers of the dissertation give more importance to the analysis  and discussion chapter. But you could be marked negatively if this particular chapter lacks critical thinking.

Many students struggle to distinguish between fundamental descriptive analysis and critical thinking with their opinions on the research topic.

Critical thinking is a skill developed over time, and it might be daunting for you to come to terms with the idea of critical thinking and its use in your analysis. But even if you are no expert, you must try your best.

Duplication of Content

Another critical error students make reaffirming the point the graph/chart was supposed to make. Writing out the same information as presented in the graph defeats the whole purpose of having them in the first place.

You will be expected to form your opinions and arguments based on the findings (as presented by the graphs), so keep an eye on this mistake. Finally, avoid simply inserting a graph without any explanation whatsoever.

It should be noted that there is no correct or incorrect number of charts/figures one can use in the dissertation findings and discussion chapter. A balance must be struck.

Avoid Over Interpretation

This is a major no-no when writing a dissertation discussion. Do not make an argument that isn’t backed by your collected data.

The results and interpretations that cannot be supported should not be mentioned. Your research will be deemed unauthentic and will also be questioned by your supervisor if you do so. Results should be interpreted without any bias.

How to Write the Findings of a Dissertation.

Do not Speculate

Speculation in the  discussion chapter of your dissertation is discouraged. Your dissertation’s discussion is based on your collected data and how it relates to your research questions. Thus, speculating here will undoubtedly undermine your research’s credibility.

Also, try not to generalise your findings. If your research is based on a specific population, do not state that the same findings might apply in every case. As indicated previously, it is essential to acknowledge the limitations of your research.

On the other hand, if you think your discussion needs to address other populations as well, start your sentence like this ‘We speculate that..’ or ‘It is speculated that..’ This will keep you from getting into any trouble.

Embarking on your dissertation is equal parts exhilaration and trepidation. It’s finally your turn to stake out your territory in the body of knowledge and hone your expertise. Naturally, it’s a lot of work, the evidence of which is reflected in your dissertation chapters. These chapters, which comprise the bulk of your dissertation, offer a clear snapshot of your topic, the work that has already been done by other scholars in your field, gaps in the literature, complications, your approach, and more. 

There are many moving parts to a dissertation, and the best way to simplify them is by chapter. Each chapter follows certain rules and serves a specific purpose. The most efficient way to break down the work ahead of you into pieces is to understand the role each chapter plays in the dissertation.

Usually five. While there are no short answers in academia, five dissertation chapters is the convention across many fields, if not most. Five dissertation chapters is a safe bet. As always, though, do your homework and find out exactly what the expectations are for dissertations in your department. 

Read (skim) dissertations written by recent graduates from your department to determine norms for chapter length and the extensiveness of the critical research they did and the studies they conducted. The average could be anything from 130 pages (math) to 500+ pages (history) –either way, you need to know. Also, visit office hours and talk to a few faculty members in your department. Whether they end up on your dissertation committee or not, their perspective will be helpful. 

Content of Each Dissertation Chapter

There is a format for the structure of a dissertation that most fields adhere to, and it is very specific. The first three chapters constitute your dissertation proposal , which must be completed, defended, and approved by your dissertation committee. Once your proposal is successfully defended,  you can proceed with the research you will need to do to write the two final chapters.

How Long is a Dissertation Chapter?

Dissertation chapter lengths vary, though the number of pages you can expect to write will likely correlate with standard dissertation lengths in your discipline. If you are doing research in a field like anthropology or theology, be prepared to conduct extensive literature reviews and write lengthy chapters. Topics that require a great deal of background information also make the pages add up.

Academic Discipline

Some graduate degrees take longer than others, and much of that disparity occurs after coursework is completed. In many arts programs, most of the dissertation is written while coursework is taking place. It’s a different story in the sciences and humanities. In fields like biology and chemistry, issues like lab space and institutional approval must be resolved before a study can even begin, much less be written about, and that can take months. In fields like history, the scholarly research phase is similarly extensive. 

University libraries are an academic wonderland, but that doesn’t mean they hold all the answers or everything that you’ll need to get to work on your literature review or background material. Like many burgeoning scholars, I was excited to discover that I would need to travel in order to undertake some archival research for the critical introduction to my dissertation. However, the time required to set this up and visit the sites extended the amount of time it took to write these dissertation chapters. 

Life has a sneaky way of persisting, even when you have a dissertation to write. Many scholars experience unavoidable stops and starts while writing their dissertations, and it’s important to make allowances for being human, even if it interferes with your writing schedule. In my experience, we do our best to write as quickly as possible, but there are inevitable hiccups along the way. No matter. Course correct and keep going. You can do this, and the rewards of having a completed, bound dissertation in your hands will make all the effort worthwhile.

A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical early steps in your writing process . It helps you to lay out and organise your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding what kind of research you’d like to undertake.

Generally, an outline contains information on the different sections included in your thesis or dissertation, such as:

  • Your anticipated title
  • Your abstract
  • Your chapters (sometimes subdivided into further topics like literature review, research methods, avenues for future research, etc.)

In the final product, you can also provide a chapter outline for your readers. This is a short paragraph at the end of your introduction to inform readers about the organisational structure of your thesis or dissertation . This chapter outline is also known as a reading guide or summary outline.

While there are some inter-institutional differences, many outlines proceed in a fairly similar fashion.

  • Subdivide as you see fit into main topics and sub-topics.
  • Describe your research methods (e.g., your scope, population , and data collection ).
  • Present your research findings and share about your data analysis methods.
  • Answer the research question in a concise way.
  • Interpret your findings, discuss potential limitations of your own research and speculate about future implications or related opportunities.

Chapter outline example British English

It can be easy to fall into a pattern of overusing the same words or sentence constructions, which can make your work monotonous and repetitive for your readers. Consider utilising some of the alternative constructions presented below.

Example 1: Passive construction

The passive voice is a common choice for outlines and overviews because the context makes it clear who is carrying out the action (e.g., you are conducting the research ). However, overuse of the passive voice can make your text vague and imprecise.

Example 2: IS-AV construction

You can also present your information using the ‘IS-AV’ (inanimate subject with an active verb) construction.

A chapter is an inanimate object, so it is not capable of taking an action itself (e.g., presenting or discussing). However, the meaning of the sentence is still easily understandable, so the IS-AV construction can be a good way to add variety to your text.

Example 3: The I construction

Another option is to use the ‘I’ construction, which is often recommended by style manuals (e.g., APA Style and Chicago style ). However, depending on your field of study, this construction is not always considered professional or academic. Ask your supervisor if you’re not sure.

Example 4: Mix-and-match

To truly make the most of these options, consider mixing and matching the passive voice , IS-AV construction , and ‘I’ construction .This can help the flow of your argument and improve the readability of your text.

As you draft the chapter outline, you may also find yourself frequently repeating the same words, such as ‘discuss’, ‘present’, ‘prove’, or ‘show’. Consider branching out to add richness and nuance to your writing. Here are some examples of synonyms you can use.

A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical first steps in your writing process. It helps you to lay out and organise your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding what kind of research you’d like to undertake.

When you mention different chapters within your text, it’s considered best to use Roman numerals for most citation styles. However, the most important thing here is to remain consistent whenever using numbers in your dissertation .

All level 1 and 2 headings should be included in your table of contents . That means the titles of your chapters and the main sections within them.

The contents should also include all appendices and the lists of tables and figures, if applicable, as well as your reference list .

Do not include the acknowledgements or abstract   in the table of contents.

This depends entirely on your university’s specific requirements, so it’s best to check with them. As a general ballpark, Masters-level projects are usually 15,000 – 20,000 words in length, while Doctoral-level projects are often in excess of 60,000 words.

Dissertation First Draft Preparation

When writing up your 1st draft you will first need to consider:  

Time Management

  • Consider where and how to research the topic
  • Completing a plan

The dissertation that is written in a single session will not achieve good marks. Writing it will take considerably longer than a week – every year  students  do attempt to write their entire piece of work with less than a week to go before they submit – and every year the same students fail to graduate.   It is important to b reak your time down into completing individual chapters ; you will find this makes the writing process much easier!   

Set  yourself a deadline to finish the first draft at least one month before the dissertation submission date .  In th e  final period, you  will  need time to review your work, have it professionally edited, proofread and marked, and make amendments to it before submission. Remember  you  will need time to have the work bound and to ensure that page margins, font size, the bibliography (and similar constraints) conform to the requirements of your university. You will be surprised as to just how long the ‘finishing off’ of the dissertation will take.  

Do remember, that this is a piece of work that carries with it  a significant percentage  of your final marks (especially if it is a double module) and that you will need time to review  what you have written.  

Where and how to research the topic

Before you start writing, research the topic thoroughly .  Perhaps compile a list of useful resources you have located that link appropriately to your dissertation topic  e.g.  books and journal articles from your university library, records from city or town archives, electronic copies of books and journals from the internet .  Your university library should have access vast databases of information, and by reading articles in journals you’ll be able to follow up-to-date debates between critics. You may also find gathering your own data helpful, depending on your subject – use things such as questionnaires, comprehensive field-notes and case studies.  Consider the type of research you are going to be conducting and how and where you will obtain this data from.   

Reading different relevant articles or books is not enough for writing a high-class academic dissertation. It is necessary that you should identify a common perspective before beginning to  writing . Either it is a comparative academic dissertation, or a critique of a book or an  article – either way, a writer should try to pose his own views after  analyzing  different perspectives related to the selected topic.  

Make a plan

P repare an essay plan for every chapter.  It is normal to feel daunted at the thought of completing a dissertation. Try  to think of the dissertation as a series of shorter essays, which you then link together.   

You may find it useful to put your notes into separate wallets for each chapter.   

You could:  

  • Number the pages of your notes as it is easier to sort them out if you drop them.   
  • On electronic notes and drafts, write a descriptive name and approximate date for the file as a footer so that you keep track of your documents.   
  • Do backups of notes. This may seem like common sense but everyone who has written a dissertation will tell you of the time they dropped  all of  their notes, or lost files.  

Do not worry too much about the word count in your first draft. It is better to write too much and then edit and focus your work  afterwards . Padding and waffle are easily spotted by markers and penalties are applied for failing to meet the word count. If you have trouble maintaining focus, write the dissertation title on a slip of paper and keep it on your computer – try to ask yourself ‘how does the sentence I am writing add to the dissertation?’.  

It is best to  write in fair sized chunks (such as about 800 – 1,500 words, depending on the length of the document). Doing so will help the work to flow and you will be more encouraged as you see your word count accumulate.   

Important things to consider

  • R emember to back up your work. This should be done to the hard drive every few minutes, before leaving your computer (to get coffee, for example), at the end of a writing session, and at the end of the day.
  • At least once a week back up to an external source – an external hard drive, the cloud, a memory stick or a disc.
  • For long dissertations consider sending a back up to a location other than that where you r  computer is normally kept – if you are coping with a disaster such as a burglary, you will not want the additional burden of having to re-do possibly years of work.
  • Be sure to read the dissertation guidelines thoroughly to make sure other aspects of style (e.g., use of charts, tables, etc.) are followed closely.
  • Ask your supervisor if you have any issues or queries, they are there to help!
  • A high-class dissertation should be free from plagiarism, using quotes appropriately and correctly referenced .  

You should consider the following 7 point checklist while writing an academic dissertation, which will help you in getting a high-class grade:  

  • Adequate identification and introduction of your thesis statement
  • Relevancy of your discussion and explanation
  • Length of paragraphs; you should try to keep a balance in the length of paragraphs, as ones which are too short or too long will end up in an uninteresting perspective for your dissertation
  • Single concept in a paragraph makes it difficult to follow your train of thought, and could lead to a lower grade
  • Proper linking of paragraphs through intermediary sentences
  • Relevancy of examples and case studies
  • Clarity of expression and relation with examples

In an academic dissertation, chapter 4 is the data analysis chapter—the heart of the research project. Prior to jumping into the research for your thesis or dissertation, you first need to develop your research proposal and have it approved by your supervisor. It should outline all of the decisions you have taken about your project, from your dissertation topic to your hypotheses and research objectives .

Depending on your department’s requirements, there may be a defense component involved, where you present your research plan in prospectus format to your committee for their approval.

Your proposal should answer the following questions:

  • Why is your research necessary?
  • What is already known about your topic?
  • Where and when will your research be conducted?
  • Who should be studied?
  • How can the research best be done?

Dissertation research questions should be:

  • Focused on a single problem or issue

  • Feasible to answer within the timeframe and practical constraints

An easy rule of thumb is that your proposal will usually resemble a (much) shorter version of your thesis or dissertation. While of course it won’t include the results section , discussion section , or conclusion , it serves as a “mini” version or roadmap for what you eventually seek to write.

Be sure to include:

  • A succinct introduction to your topic and problem statement
  • A brief literature review situating your topic within existing research
  • A basic outline of the research methods you think will best answer your research question
  • The perceived implications for future research
  • A reference list in the citation style of your choice

The length of your proposal varies quite a bit depending on your discipline and type of work you’re conducting. While a thesis proposal is often only 3-7 pages long, a prospectus for your dissertation is usually much longer, with more detailed analysis. Dissertation proposals can be up to 25-30 pages in length.

  • Your research questions and/or hypotheses

  • Footnotes may be single spaced within each entry but must be double spaced between each entry.

Bibliography

Students should check with their advisor or department to determine whether a bibliography is customary in their field. If it is, the conventions of the discipline should be followed:

  • The bibliography may be single spaced within each entry but must be double spaced between each entry.
  • On the first page of the bibliography, the page number is placed at the bottom of the page, centered between the margins. Thereafter, page numbers should be placed in the same position as they are throughout the rest of the text.
  • The bibliography should be consecutively paginated after the text.

Using copyrighted material requires permission from the copyright holder, which could be the original author, a publisher, or other creator. If a quotation, passage, or image does not qualify as Fair Use , permission from the copyright owner must be obtained and uploaded as a supplemental file when submitting the dissertation. Visit the  Harvard Library Copyright Advisor  program or talk to a Copyright First Responder for information about fair use, publishing and licensing, state copyright laws, and more, or Harvard’s  Office of the General Counsel . Students who are reproducing, publishing, distributing, or displaying work in a foreign country will need to investigate the applicable laws in that country.

  • Permission to use copyrighted material is obtained from the owner of the copyright.
  • Any permission required for use of copyrighted material must be obtained before the dissertation is submitted.

The positioning of the dissertation at the end of the programme is intended to promote integration of material covered in the core and optional modules.

  • The dissertation topic is chosen by the student and formally approved by the Programme Director on behalf of the Chair of the Board of Examiners.
  • Students may choose to undertake a Business Project in place of the traditional dissertation format. This may be achieved by either working with a specific host organisation or, alternatively, by undertaking an issue-led investigation across a range of organisations on a specific marketing issue. The topic must be suitable for in-depth investigation, however, and formally approved by the Programme Director on behalf of the Chair of the Board of Examiners.
  • The Business Project is theoretically underpinned in the same way as a traditional dissertation, and should normally involve undertaking empirical research. The project requires students to write a short literature review, followed by a detailed explanation of their selected research method, including - detail on data collection and analytical methods, the presentation of their findings, and a short discussion of the results, including recommendations for the host organisation.
  • In producing the dissertation, students will make use of and manage library facilities, databases and other learning resources.
  • Students who seek to undertake a dissertation abroad will be expected to attend information briefings on undertaking their dissertation abroad and are assisted with the application process by the MSc Study Abroad team. In addition, students are monitored and supported by the MSc Study Abroad team while abroad, and have a mentor from the partner institution.

  • A combination of lectures, seminars (including computer labs or practical sessions as appropriate), and guided reading addressing key topics in research will cover the subject-specific knowledge and skills together with general aspects of the dissertation process.
  • Formative assessment on this module requires students to write a 2500 word draft research proposal, including a short literature review, and a detailed initial plan for two research methods (qualitative and quantitative), including - where relevant - detail on data collection and likely analytical methods.
  • Students select a topic for their dissertation, which is approved by the Board of Examiners. The topic should involve the analysis of a relevant marketing issue in some depth, demonstrating a critical understanding of the relevant theory and its applications.
  • Students work independently on their research, analysis and writing up, under the guidance of a supervisor. For students undertaking a dissertation abroad with an approved partner, additional local mentoring will form part of the supervisory support.

APOL 987 is the transitional course that assesses competency from PhD in Applied Apologetics course work and prepares the PhD candidate for dissertation writing. This is accomplished through the successful completion of a comprehensive field exam, prospectus development and approval, and pairing the candidate with an appropriate dissertation mentor. All these tasks are necessary before dissertation writing can formally commence.

The student’s final comprehensive exam requires him or her to write an article related to his or her intended research dissertation topic. The article functions as something of a “field essay” and does two things: (1) it establishes that the student has “read yourself into the field” sufficient to demonstrate mastery of the issues and literature appropriate to the PhD level of research, and (2) it establishes that the student has a viable proposed research topic in the field. In preparation for the exam, the student will write a brief proposal (two-page maximum) to be submitted to the professor for approval in the form of this Journal Article Proposal. 

Once the student’s Comprehensive Exam 4: Journal Article Proposal Assignment has been approved by the instructor of APOL 987, the student will prepare and submit a publishable article on an approved topic relevant to his or her dissertation that explores a gap in the literature. This exam must demonstrate that the student has a mastery of the field, a grasp of the literature, and an ability to integrate information and themes developed in his or her PhD in Applied Apologetics coursework. 

A PhD dissertation prospectus is an essential preparatory element in the beginning stages of writing a dissertation. The prospectus provides a “roadmap” of sorts for what you intend to do, say, and support in the student’s dissertation. Based on an approved topic, the prospectus provides the detail necessary to transition from broad-based and often vague intentions to the content of a sharply focused, well-crafted dissertation. In this assignment, the student will compose a first draft of such a prospectus. 

A PhD dissertation prospectus is an essential preparatory element in the beginning stages of writing a dissertation. Following the first draft submission, and based on faculty feedback and guidance, the student will take the necessary steps to augment, revise, and build upon the first draft prospectus. The final draft prospectus is a detailed “roadmap” for the student’s dissertation and will include a chapter-by-chapter synopsis projecting the content of the dissertation. The final draft prospectus is not the first chapter of the dissertation; it is a document that stands separate from the dissertation.

The student will complete a critical analysis of Chatraw and Allen’s The Augustinian Way. Doing so will require that the student both summarize the major highlights of this work and critically interact with its unique academic contribution. The aim of this assignment is for the student to glean a better understanding of how apologetics can be applied in today’s academic milieu as he or she begins to consider making his or her own contribution in his or her dissertation.  

In an effort to produce honest, reliable, and sustainable research results, it is critical to develop a cogent and appropriate research methodology. This assignment will help the student confirm that his or her research methodology related to the coming dissertation is sound and can result in reliable, sustainable, and defensible conclusions. 

Quizzes will be given in the assigned Modules that cover information related to “Read” and “Watch” materials in their respective Modules. The quizzes will be open-book/open-notes, contain varying number of true/false questions, and have a time limit of 15-minutes.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are gearing up to make an NBA Finals run next season, adding multiple promising guards in the NBA Draft.

Former Illinois Fighting Illini's Terrence Shannon was selected with the No. 27 pick and is wasting no time getting to work. While in the gym, Shannon reacted to a message from teammate and four-time Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert.

"What's up, Terrence, just want to say congrats on the draft," Gobert said. "27th pick is a special one, and welcome to the organization. Welcome to the Timberwolves. We're excited to have you, and it's a new journey that starts looking forward to meeting you and having a great training camp."

After a rollercoaster journey to reach the league, Shannon was left with a loss of words, explaining his feelings about the message from Gobert.

"It's just crazy, man," Shannon said of the video. "I'm grateful to become his teammate, Defensive Player of the Year, congratulating me. I'm blessed and happy to be in this opportunity, ready to get to work."

Shannon joins the loaded Wolves roster highlighted by Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Gobert, meaning he'll see fewer touches than accustomed to. He averaged 23 points and 4 rebounds on 47.5 percent shooting last season with the Illini as the primary offensive option. The Timberwolves also drafted Kentucky's Rob Dillingham, whom Shannon can develop alongside, in a trade for the No. 8 pick.
