Homelessness doesn’t exist in a vacuum. And most people who experience homelessness don’t necessarily become homeless overnight. From our experience, most people do not become homeless for only one reason. Rather, many complicated problems create a perfect storm, leading a person to homelessness.

So, before we can solve homelessness, we have to first understand and identify what homelessness is. The many contributing factors are often not what we might think. For example, homelessness is normally a short term crisis (30-45 days), not a long-term situation. Youth are more likely to be homeless. In fact, 23% of all people experiencing  homeless in Greater Cincinnati are under the age of 18. And 51% are under the age of 35 .  And locally, African-Americans are grossly over-represented among the homeless, indicating a host of problems that disproportionately affect black families.

In addition, when volunteers are not available, organizations have to pay someone to prepare and serve meals. In turn taking funding away from helping people get back into housing. There are lots of other ways to help homeless people. Donating food and clothing to homeless shelters is a great way to help. You could also volunteer your time with such an organization. Educate yourself and others about homelessness and share facts about homelessness with others. Use letters to your local newspaper, blog posts, and social media to spread the word about how homelessness is a problem and what others can do to help.

Supporting Nonprofit Organizations

• New underwear and socks

• Train homeless people in a skill like gardening or playing an instrument
• Use your skill set to assist the homeless in other ways (for instance, by giving homeless people free haircuts or tutoring homeless kids)

Creating Awareness

• If you have children, start by educating them. If you volunteer for an organization that supports the homeless, ask if you can take your child along so that they can see firsthand the hardships of homelessness.

• Incorporate video and photos on your blog as well as text.

• Advertise the food or clothing drive by putting up flyers around town and by asking your local newspaper to place a notice about the drive in upcoming editions.
• Restaurants are good places to host food or clothing drive bins, since they generate a lot of foot traffic. People will remember to bring along some canned or boxed food next time they visit.
• If you’re organizing the drive on behalf of or in conjunction with a particular nonprofit that supports the homeless population, ask them ahead of time what sort of foods or clothing items you should encourage people to donate. Include this information on the sign you attach to your bins or boxes.

Although many facility programs focus on helping solve this significant issue in today’s society, many nations lack the resources necessary to help each one of the homeless people. Men, women, children, adults and families all are affected by one of the major social issue in the world that is homelessness.

Many of us have seen individuals asking for money who have all their belongings in a plastic bag and have nowhere to go. Although the most visible homeless people are the one sleeping roughly in doorways, homelessness also includes individuals who stay in bed and breakfast, hostels or other temporary accommodation or local authority housing.

It is tough to understand how a person becomes homeless, and researches show that they belong from all areas, backgrounds and age groups. Most researches show that more than three-fourth of the youngsters who turn to facility centres for help are homeless due to abuse, eviction or family breakdown.

Many of the young people also often become homeless following the death of their guardian due to which they face double blow becoming bereaved and homeless at the same time. But before seeking any help, these vulnerable young people find themselves sleeping rough.

The young people have no means of supporting themselves financially as they have no qualifications so a significant help to them would be if they get any assistance so that they can return to school or gain a qualification and get housing facilities through which they can find stability by finding worthwhile employment. But unfortunately, they are befriended by drug addicts or forced into prostitution for a minimal income.

Places affected by natural disasters like earthquakes and floods suddenly have thousands of persons whose houses become unliveable and who have nothing in possessions. The society has to change its attitude towards people who are facing these dire situations as its not their fault and help them to make their society a developed one.

(LOS ANGELES) (JULY 2, 2021) Dr. Michele Nealon , president of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology , says the only way we can solve the nation’s homeless crisis is through a highly concentrated and coordinated effort involving public and private sectors. This process is already helping a variety of communities start to manage the crisis but Dr. Nealon, who is a licensed clinical psychologist, says this effort must be sustained and must be replicated across the country.

“People become homeless for many reasons and those reasons are usually beyond their control. Psychology, healthcare and policy professionals can work together to stop the vicious cycles of economic inequality, systemic racism, soaring real estate costs, substance abuse, and domestic violence that have left so many people marginalized from society and unable to find a way back,” Dr. Nealon explains.

The United States now has more than half a million homeless people, and unless federal dollars are put into housing subsidies for people who will face eviction after losing their income during the pandemic, homelessness is projected to grow by 50% or more this year.

“No matter the cause of homelessness, there must be a support structure in place that helps people lift themselves out of it. That means a coordinated effort across many public agencies and privately funded organizations. It means channeling money into more preventative measures, more investments in programs that take into account psychological concerns and produce social returns, and more expansions to the national level, of practices that have worked at the local level.”

Drawing on her experience as well as interviews with people who have experienced and who are experiencing homelessness, caseworkers, and advocates for the homeless, Dr. Nealon is in the process of writing Home for Good: How America can and must solve the homeless crisis before it’s too late. The book offers a blueprint of policies, therapies, and practices that work.

She emphasizes that the solution is more than just creating enough affordable housing. “Living without a permanent roof causes stresses on the body and mind, so that many need rehabilitation before they can function in a job or a home. Society, too, suffers both economically and psychologically. By creating a system around the premise that housing is a basic right and therefore includes social justice measures, safety nets, health care, and treatment for mental illness and addiction, we can end the crisis.”

Helping the Homeless in the Community Essay

My community service project involves helping the homeless in the community. I am involved in a project which is to to feed the homeless. I am involved in the project every Thursday evening, and I volunteer for two hours. The main task during the two hours is preparing cutlery and to serving the food to the homeless people. I am supposed to volunteer for a total of 25 hours, and I have already covered 10 hours of the total time.

During the last meeting, the leader of the project delegated some tasks to the members of the volunteer group. I am in the team that has to visit the grocery store to investigate the prices of the basic foodstuff. This task is geared toward identifying the cost of food for the homeless people. We particularly have to focus on the living conditions of the homeless people to highlight the level of poverty that they face, and to enable the organizers to come up with the most feasible plans to alleviate their situation. According to my findings from the groceries, an average meal for the homeless people costs $20.

A majority of the people we serve can barely afford this amount, hence, they have to skip meals and survive on whatever they get from begging in the streets. Their situation is dire, and our charity project is barely enough to meet their basic needs. My experience with the homeless people has enlightened me about the adverse effects of poverty. I always had a notion that people can easily get away from poverty, but I have learned that the poor people do not always have an easy way out of their challenges.

CST reveals that it is the responsibility of the society to empower the poor. The experience has a direct link with the CST because I am involved in the attainment of the theme of human dignity that forms the core of the concept. I am acquainted with the requirements of a true Christian, and my conduct while attending to the homeless is guided by the requirements of CST.

According to chapter 5 of See, Judge, Act: Catholic Social Teaching and Service Learning by Erin M. Brigham, economic justice should prevail across the society, and this is the main goal of the project. Through the project, I have realized that there are many people in the streets who cannot afford a meal, and I have related to the ideas presented in the CST that the community should be actively involved in helping the poor.

I have witnessed the level of poverty that faces the homeless people, and I am challenged by the CST to look into helping the homeless whenever possible. While our project is intended to feed the homeless, there should be other projects developed to provide employment opportunities and housing for them. The principle of solidarity is emphasized in chapter 6 of Brigham’s book, and it should be at the heart of the community in the course of empowering the poor.

It is sad to see that the current situation of the homeless people is still very bad, whereas there are many people in the community that have the financial ability to help them rise from their impoverished conditions. CST calls for the entire community to integrate the available resources to help the poor. Giving is highlighted as a blessing by the Holy Scripture, and CST emphasizes on helping to the poor. Helping the needy is not limited to giving tangible things. Offering services to the needy is also an act of giving.

New York City Moves to Shut Down a Growing Migrant Encampment

Dozens of migrants have been sleeping outdoors near a large shelter complex on Randall’s Island. On Monday, the city forced them to pack up their tents and move.

New York City officials began clearing out an encampment of homeless migrants on Randall’s Island on Monday as the city contends with a growing number of migrants sleeping outside .

Dozens of migrants have been sleeping in camping tents, under tarps and on mattresses outside a giant tent dormitory on Randall’s Island, where the city is housing 3,000 migrants. Most are men from West Africa and Latin America who moved outside this summer as Mayor Eric Adams began enforcing stricter rules on the amount of time adult migrants can stay in the shelter system, leading some to be evicted.

On Monday morning, the migrants scrambled to pack their tents and belongings as police officers and city workers scoured the area to collect belongings left behind. Outreach workers from the Department of Homeless Services offered migrants rides to a processing center to apply for a shelter placement, though many were wary after having maxed out their allotted time in the shelter system.

The encampment on Randall’s Island had emerged as a visible symbol of one of the city’s most vexing challenges: a migrant influx that has seen more than 210,000 people arriving from the southern border seeking shelter. Two years into the crisis, the city is still housing nearly 64,000 migrants in hotels, offices and other shelters.

Now, officials are trying to reduce that population without pushing migrants to the streets and escalating quality-of-life concerns among New Yorkers .

The problem also has national implications during an intense election year, though the number of migrants crossing the southern border has plummeted over the last few months. Republicans, including former President Donald J. Trump, have used images of disorder and migrants on the streets of New York and elsewhere to attack Democrats about border security and local safety issues.
