P roblem , noun. 1a: A question raised for inquiry, consideration, or solution… 2a: An intricate, unsettled question… 2b: A source of perplexity, distress, or vexation.  The aforementioned are just some of the definitions, via Merriam-Webster , for the word problem , the keyword on 11 MUST-HEAR, PROBLEMATIC PROBLEM SONGS .  Lots of songs have been written explicitly and implicitly surrounding various problems – situations. In the case of this particular list, such problems will be explicit as the word MUST be featured in the song title.  There are many more than 11 songs, but we’re going to keep things nice and tight here.  

So, who did we enlist to provide the tunes for 11 MUST-HEAR, PROBLEMATIC PROBLEM SONGS? Glad you asked! How about the likes of 6LACK , Ariana Grande (featuring Iggy Azalea , mind you), Delli Boe , Jay-Z , and Sabrina Claudio ? There is no shortage of must-hear bops here, so without further ado, let’s jump right into these winning problematic songs, shall we!

1. Katy Perry, “Champagne Problems”

2. Delli Boe, “Bisexual Problems”

After the minimalist production establishes itself, so does Delli Boe, honestly.  I mean, the opening lyrics from “Bisexual Problems” are definitely ‘in your face’:

“Even though I like boys would ya still let me hit If I eat yo pussy would ya still stuck my dick Baby, I’ll take yo soul if I lick on yo clit You ain’t ever met a n***a who did it like this.”

Woo! It doesn’t stop there, but you can listen and read the rest of the sexually charged lyrics for yourself.  Basically, he personally won’t turn down experiences with guys or girls and he wants to know if you’d be cool with that. Add it to the collection LGBTQ+ 🌈 songs if nothing else.   Hopefully, Delli Boe being safe during these various sexual encounters. Wrap it up!

3. Ariana Grande, “Problem”

Focusing on “Problem,” there is no shortage of swagger, absolutely sick vocals (Ari), and potent rhymes (Iggy). Notably, Grande was dating Big Sean at the time.  He appears on the album, including providing the pivotal chant, “I got one less problem without you,” on the this undisputed, totally unproblematic urban-pop smash.

4. Arizona Zervas, “Drinking Problem”

“drinking problem” • arizona zervas • 2019.

Apparently, Zona’s girl accused him of having issues with alcohol. He denies them – well – sort of:

“She said I got a drinking problem But I don’t got no problem drinking, though I solve my problems with the bottle And drink until I feel my face no more.”

So, he DOES in fact have a problem with the bottle, using it to cope essentially. Similarly, on the second verse, 27CLUB is in the same boat:

“Bad habits, I smoke it like I’m a drug addict I try to quit but seemingly I’m not good at it Fucked up rock star in a denim jacket Bury me with some roses inside a leather casket.”

Ultimately, both artists are on the struggle bus and even if they try to curb the problem, they just can’t seem to. Now that, my friends, is indeed a problem.

5. Chance the Rapper, “No Problem”

Chance The Rapper is assisted by Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz on this gem. The aforementioned chorus is catchy, infectious, and utterly sweet.  All of the verses – one per rapper – definitely yield NO PROBLEM(s) whatsoever. Following Chance’s verse, even the hella dumb 2 Chainz manages to rein himself in 😂.  That’s not to say he doesn’t say some silly stuff on the second verse such as “Run shit like diarrhea (True)” – lol. Of course, we get some sexual references from Lil Wayne, such as “Pretty bitches / Tippy toes around my crib in they robes, just their robes.” No comment!

6. Nick Jonas, “Champagne Problems”

Last year was complicated • island • 2016.

“Champagne Problems,” a song where misery is best drowned in alcohol (“I hate to see you cry, so let’s drink before goodbye”), is by no means a miserable listen.  Nick sounds looser than ever, despite the tension characterized within the record.

7. Sabrina Claudio, “Problem with You”

Truth is • sc entertainment • 2019.

On the first verse, she begins by addressing her own problems, inquiring first, “Was I cold?” Similarly, on the second verse, she examines her own issues while being with him. Of course, she shifts to the source of the problems – HIM! On the pre-chorus, she’s so infatuated and paranoid, she’s quite possibly getting in her own way with her love:

“Let’s talk about last night, you went to sleep Didn’t even talk to me You left me with questions, agonizing You bring out the worst in me.”

On the bridge, she comes right out and blames him for putting her through this.  Do we ever determine if he’s ‘no good’ or if Sabrina is just scared, she’s going to lose him? No, but this is a relatable song for anyone who’s been in a relationship, particularly one where you question the commitment to some degree for whatever reason.

8. 6LACK, “PRBLMS”

Free 6lack • interscope • 2016.

Even though 6LACK is at least partially responsible, he’s not fully committed to it 24/7. On the chorus he asserts, “I got real shit to stress about, girl, I ain’t worried ‘bout shit,” before admitting, “So, I found a new thang, I’m not as lost as you think / Got plenty of queens in my hometown, all they need is drank and that good dank.” Here’s the thing.  Having a high maintenance boy- or girlfriend isn’t optimal.  That said, 6LACK also seems like he’s in a vicious cycle of problems because he indulges in various, um, ‘side pieces’ you might say.

9. A$AP Rocky, “F**kin’ Problems”

Ft. Drake, 2 Chainz & Kendrick Lamar

Long.Live.A$AP • RCA • 2013

Drake brags on the second verse, “Ain’t heard my new album? Who you sleepin’ on? You should print the lyrics out and have a fuckin’ read along…” Kendrick Lamar kills it on the final verse: “She eying me like a n***a don’t exist / Girl, I know you want this di-.”  No ‘fuckin’ problems’ with this mega hit!

10. Kevin Abstract, “American Problem”

Arizona baby • rca • 2019.

“American Problem” finds Abstract reflecting on his past, as well as his current reality.  Part of that includes being gay, something that has been a prevalent theme in his previous work, not to mention the work of BROCKHAMPTON. On the second verse, he states, “And all my girlfriends, they tell me / ‘Well, you would’ve been better if you picked someone who was just like you’.” He also goes on to say:

“I thought a brother was cut... I was a flaming faggot, that’s when the principal called me Not to my face, but I felt when I was stuck in his office I’m just a, I’m just another American problem...”

Quite a unique listen, the production work is distinct, while Abstract’s vocals are pitch-shifted at times, and there’s singing and rapping. “American Problem” previously appeared on 15 Must-Hear, All-American Songs and A Compendium Comprised of 100 Notable LGBTQ+ Songs .

11. Jay-Z, “99 Problems”

The black album • roc nation • 2003.

“99 Problems” features some stellar rapping from Hov with plenty of ‘real talk.’ He’s confident and definitely sticks up both middle fingers to the haters.  Perhaps my favorite example: “I’m like, ‘Fuck critics, you can kiss my whole asshole!’” He doesn’t stop there, as he tells a story of being stopped by ‘Jake’ (white police officer) on the second verse, which has a number of different layers to unpack in all honesty. The third verse is colorful as well, with ample wordplay and even some lines that make you scratch your head.  What I can safely say is that there’s no problems whatsoever with “99 Problems.” Produced by Rick Rubin with a rap-rock backdrop and some great samples, “99 Problems” is iconic.

Birds with more complex vocal skills are better problem-solvers.

Researchers put more than 200 birds through a gauntlet of brainteasers

The tufted titmouse ( Baeolophus bicolor ) can learn more than 63 vocalizations and was the top problem-solver in a new study that links bird intelligence with vocal learning.

By now, it’s no secret that the phrase “bird brain” should be a compliment, not an insult. Some of our feathered friends are capable of complex cognitive tasks, including tool use ( SN: 2/10/23 ). Among the brainiest feats that birds are capable of is vocal learning, or the ability to learn to mimic sounds and use them to communicate. In birds, this leads to beautiful calls and songs; in humans, it leads to language.

The best avian vocal learners, such as crows and parrots, also tend to be considered the most intelligent birds. So it’s natural to think that the two traits could be linked. But studies with smart birds have found conflicting evidence . Although vocal learning may be linked with greater cognitive capacity in some species, the opposite relationship seems to hold true in others.

Now, a massive analysis of 214 birds from 23 species shows that there is indeed a link between vocal learning and at least one advanced cognitive ability — problem-solving. The study, described in the Sept. 15 Science, is the first to analyze multiple bird species instead of just one.

To compare species, biologist Jean-Nicolas Audet of the Rockefeller University in New York City and colleagues had to devise a way to assess all the birds’ vocal learning and cognitive abilities.

For vocal learning, the team scoured the scientific literature to find how many songs and calls a particular species could learn, whether it could learn vocalizations throughout its life or just for a set developmental period and whether it could mimic other bird species. “Our novel way of measuring vocal complexity integrates those three features together,” Audet says.

The researchers next developed cognitive tests that could be adapted for different birds. A test built for a tiny house wren ( Troglodytes aedon ), for instance, might not work for a bulky mourning dove ( Zenaida macroura ). Audet and research assistant Mélanie Couture ultimately presented birds with seven cognitive tasks over six days.

Four of the tasks tested problem-solving ability. For example, one task involved pulling a cork lid off a flask to access food inside. The other three tasks assessed learning and self-control, other hallmarks of advanced cognition.

The team then analyzed whether the bird species with more complex vocal learning abilities, such as bigger song repertoires, mimicry and lifelong learning, also performed better on their intelligence tests.

Problem-solving, but not learning or self-control, is strongly associated with more complex vocal learning in birds, the researchers found. “The more advanced vocal learning ability, the more advanced problem-solving skills,” says study coauthor Erich Jarvis, a biologist at Rockefeller University.

Take the tufted titmouse ( Baeolophus bicolor ). This species learns around 63 vocalizations and can learn throughout its life. It completed the problem-solving tasks faster than the brown-headed cowbird ( M olothrus ater ), which learns only about nine vocalizations within a set developmental window.

The new finding is a “very convincing, positive result,” says William Searcy, a biologist at the University of Miami who studies birdsong . Audet’s team also found a link between complex vocal learning, better problem-solving ability and bigger brains relative to body size. That could partially explain the result, Searcy says. A bigger brain is likely necessary to excel at both vocal learning and problem-solving.

The researchers saved the brains of some of the birds, so they next hope to search for the genes underlying the linked traits. That work could have implications for scientists’ understanding of how human language evolved. “There is a chance that we will discover genes related to problem-solving and vocal learning that are possibly also used in humans for those same behaviors,” Audet says.

Music Making Is Problem Solving

Every once and a while the excitement to launch into a session fully inspired, fully motivated, literally can’t-get-into-it-soon-enough hits me, and it’s amazing. Seriously, in my experience there really isn’t anything that gets me pumped like that because when you know your idea is that good, and everything seems to come together perfectly, you know it’s going to be big. It’s different this time. So, you get started, loading the drum kit, mapping out the midi, tweaking the saturation.. soooo gooood….. then, your Facebook beeps, the insurance guy calls, your plugin freezes, and before you know it you’ve completely lost the groove, and the dream is over before it started.  Music making requires endless problem-solving. 

Why is inspiration so quick to fade out? Why are there so many obstacles in the way? Does sitting down to make music always have to be this difficult? If you can relate to the experience I painted above you have tasted the sourness of the scapegoat in music.

There will always be a need to solve problems and cut through obstacles, both unexpected and predictable. Yet for better or worse, they come part and parcel with making music. Questions and distractions… Instead of fighting them, we need to minimize their effect on us, and as much as possible reduce the chance of distractions from happening altogether.

Looking back at nearly 100% of any consultations and coaching I do with people, I find there are four main ‘problem’ areas which seem to rotate and steal our attention. While there will always be some form of distraction, if we work to minimize these four main problems we’ll be in much better shape to stay on track during our next session.

We’re talking about a creative solutions to common solving problems.

Problem one: How and where do you get inspiration? I believe that there is a special energy that comes to us when she knows we’re committed to her. When I say her, I mean the work. Professional runners say that the hardest part about running a marathon is simply getting the motivation to put on their shoes, and leave the house. Boom. Just show up and get started – load up your daw, and start making noise, you’ll soon get excited and find something cool to work towards. One of the most important and simple approaches to music production, which I always recommend, is simply making music when you feel great. I’ve read several articles about the importance of rituals – where you design and carry out a pattern that makes you happy inside and out, and within that zone, your mind will enter a very positive space, which is super important when we demand creativity and imagination.

Problem Two: How can I know enough about music production to be a one-man band? It’s impossible to know everything, and you don’t need to. What you really want to know are the ins and outs of your daw, and instruments you use. If you’ve been buying all the latest synths and each one of them is different, it’s going to take quite some time to know them all 100%, whereas if you are using one or two instruments, read the manuals and learn everything you can about JUST those two synths – you’ll be much quicker to make and achieve the sounds you want by knowing less (less instruments to learn), and focusing more (mastering the ones you use).

Less is more. I watched a video interview of one producer who’s had several track placements with Kendrick Lamar ~ the dude is 18, and records everything into Garage Band on his iPhone. He has a guitar and a phone. That’s it, and he’s making huge strides with his work, even with the most basic equipment.

Find a way to get engaged. Ask yourself what part of music production makes you forget about time, food, and everything else? This is a space where you’re in the zone, fully committed, and nothing else matters. Embrace this process and be aware of when this happens, you may not reach this level of focus and results during other steps along the way. For some, this state will only come to them when Dj’ing, and for others, it will come while locked in a mixdown, etc.. know where you’ll find your flow.

Problem Three: How can I commit to a direction in my music? While there is no straight answer for this, I’ll simplify things to the belief that – you have multiple options, and don’t have to commit to only one. Record both ideas, and use the ‘save-as’ feature, allowing you to save a second version of the song to work on, and later decide which direction you’ll be happy with.

And lastly Problem Four: What will the afterlife of my song be?

No one can see into the future, so it’s impossible to know. I don’t believe it’s a productive use of your time to dream about what could be one day… without finishing your song, it will stay living on you hard drive forever, which is not what you want. What is important right now is to focus on the important things here: Making music, Finishing projects , promoting your work, networking with other producers.

To wrap things up, problem-solving can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be. While a study suggested that in front of anxiety, one of the best things to do is to take a 2 day break, although I’d encourage you to take a week off to start with.

In an excellent psychology related article I read that when one is faced with a challenge, it’s critical to understand exactly what you’re being tested with – that is, you need to know what is the real problem. To know and understand what the problem is you must be able to explain to someone else with clarity, with a clear description. Understand the problem, and understand the options available to you. I read that negotiators who talk to terrorists holding hostages will eliminate many options down to only two in an effort to achieve a quick, yet satisfying resolution. Reduce your options to get moving quickly. Making a decision in haste can also have a negative effect, so don’t feel the need to always make a decision right away – give your self time away from the problem, and trust your brain’s ability to understand that in the background, beneath the surface, at some point a creative solution will emerge, often when least expected.

In the end, to win more, to score more, to get through to the finish line more often, you need to be as creative in finding solutions to problems as you are in every other area of your productions. Set a up a system where you minimize the chance for distractions to happen.
