I am fond of eating pasta. My mother, on Sundays and other holidays, makes a lot of pasta for me. She is a good cook. I don’t like to eat green vegetables but my parents tell us that eating green vegetables is good for our health. So, we eat green vegetables and salads every day. My father also likes to cook and makes many delicious dishes for us. I love to help my parents with their cooking. I can make sandwiches and cut vegetables. When I grow up I aspire to become a great chef.

I go for a morning walk with my father . Then after breakfast, I go to school and come back in the afternoon. I sleep for an hour and then get fresh and go outside for playing.

What I Do in Leisure Time:

In my leisure , I mostly spend time with my family. My sister and I play video games on PlayStation. She is really bad in video gaming, I always win against her. Sometimes, I go out to spend time with my friends.

My best friend’s name is Suhas. He is a really good boy. We discuss school, sport, cinema and other things. I really spend good time with him. Sometimes, in my leisure time, I read books. Book reading is one of my biggest hobbies.    

This is all about me. I am a loving and caring boy. I am very friendly, I love making new friends and hang out with them. I am a little bit shy at first, but when I become a good buddy, you can see my sense of humor.

My mom has done so many sacrifices in her life to give us a better life. Only mothers can do such sacrifices. I love her a lot. She takes a lot of care of all us. Out of my family, I have a big friend group. I love hangout with them. Salim is my best friend.

He lives near our apartment. We meet every day at school and also meet after school in the afternoon. We play together. Sometimes, some of the other friends join us and we spend a really good time.  

My Hobby – Book Reading:

I have so many hobbies, but book reading is the best one. I always was a book lover. My elder sister is also a book lover and that’s why we have got a small family library. Our parents always encourage us to read more and more books.

In my leisure time, my mom also read books. My father is not a member of our reading club. But he spends lots of money to buy these books. We buy a book every year and make the library bigger. My younger brother is also showing his interest in book reading.

My favorite book is Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. This book is really thrilling and full of suspense. When I got the book for the first time, I was really happy. The reason is I read lots of reviews about this book.  

That’s all about me. I am a really fun loving boy and I love spending time with my friends.

He is a really smart and talented person. At this age, he still can walk and run. He takes me to the morning walk regularly. He shares lots of interesting stories. I am learning about history and English from him. He is a really good teacher . My grandpa is a religious person. Most of his time, he prays to Allah.    

What Sport I Like Most?

My favorite sport is Football because I can play that game really well. In my school team, I am the captain for the last two years. When I was in class seven, I go first-ever chance to play for the school football team. And then, I never get out from there.

I am still playing and going well with my good performance. Last year, I scored two goals and led my team to win the inter-school championship. We rescue the trophy after six years. The whole was really happy with me. I got lots of invitations from school authority and local peoples.

Not only playing, but I also love watching football too. My favorite football team is ‘Barcelona’ and my favorite footballer is Lionel Messi. I think he is the greatest of all time.  

My School and Friends:

In my school, I have lots of friends. I love spending time with them. I am a very friendly person. But in the first meet, you may find me shy and introverted. But if you become a buddy, I will be really open with you. Most of my friends are really amazing in study and sports. They like me and I like them too. My school is a popular school and it is doing amazing according to yearly results.  

Gardening is My Hobby:

Gardening is my hobby and I have got a garden in front of my home. A cousin helped me a lot to make this. I was inspired to see his garden in his roof. And I thought, I have enough space in front of my house, why should not I start? I did and it became a love for me. Now I spend lots of time regularly there.

I have studied biology and I will seat for the competitive entrance exam for admission to reputed medical college. I shall try to be a good and honest student. Then I shall be a qualified doctor. I will do all that to be a good doctor and will be sincere to it.

There is a lot of work and preparation that goes into writing a speech. If you're writing a speech about yourself, you need to consider a variety of factors, including your audience, the purpose of the speech, and how long your speech should be. With a good amount of preparation, planning, and editing, you can craft a speech that introduces yourself effectively and entertainingly.

Prewriting Your Speech

Step 1 Clarify the purpose of your speech.

  • One method for brainstorming is to create a mind map. You can do this with a paper and pencil, starting by writing your central idea or theme in the middle of the page. Then use lines to connect ideas and points that branch off from this central idea. For a speech about yourself, you might start with a central bubble labeled "Me". Then you might have three or four bubbles connected to the central one that say things like "Interests", "Aspirations", etcetera. Then as you continue branching out the bubbles will get more specific.
  • There are other methods for brainstorming you might find useful. You could try the alphabet method, where you list a few things related to the subject of your speech for each letter, starting with A and working down.
  • Another brainstorming method is the three perspectives method. You think about the subject of the speech in three perspectives. First, describe the subject, which is yourself in this case. Then, trace it. Trace your history, where you came from and where you've come to, and how you've changed over that journey. Finally, map it. Think about who and what has influenced you and how. How do you fit into the bigger picture. Step 3 Tailor your content to your audience and purpose.

  • It's worth thinking about various aspects of the audience, because this will determine various aspects of your speech, such as its length, its tone, etcetera.
  • For example, if your audience is a wedding reception, and this is a best man speech, your audience will be most interested in your relationship with the groom and your history with him. You also don't want a speech like this to drag on because the best man isn't the focal point of the event.

Writing Your Speech

Step 1 Review your assignment.

  • The most important difference between a long and a short speech is the amount of detail. A two minute speech in which you introduce yourself to a class will have a short intro that might be just your opening statement. There might be only a paragraph or two in the body of the speech, and the conclusion will probably be only a sentence or two.
  • A ten to fifteen minute speech will have an introduction that in itself has a beginning, middle, and end, an opening statement, an introduction fo the main points of speech, and a summary of the main theme. The body might consist of four to six paragraphs, and each one will include both explanations of the main points, as well as examples. The conclusion will be a lengthier summary, and might include a sentence or two that ties the theme of the speech into a broader context.

Step 2 Write an outline.

  • Depending on the length of your speech, you may need to break up the body section into multiple parts, like "Paragraph 1," "Paragraph 2," etcetera.
  • Speeches two minutes and shorter should have one or two main points, which can probably fit into a single body paragraph.
  • Speeches between two and five minutes should have two to three main points, given a paragraph each in the body.
  • Longer speeches, over five minutes, should have up to five main points, given a paragraph each in the body.
  • At this stage, you should also begin thinking about how your content will be organized. For a speech about yourself, it would make sense to either organize your content chronologically, with each main point being a different period in your history, or topically, with each main point as a different topic related to yourself.

Step 3 Plan your opening statement.

  • If this is a simple, short speech, meant to introduce you to your class or group, you can start with a basic introduction that includes a brief greeting, your name, and the purpose of the speech. This can look something like "Good morning everyone! My name is so-and-so and I'd like to take this chance to introduce myself to the group."
  • If this speech about yourself is for a more specific purpose than just introducing yourself, you may want to make the introduction a little more entertaining and interesting. You can start with a provocative question, a shocking fact, a joke, or an evocative image. For example, if your speech is about an interesting aspect of your life, like your unusual profession, you can start with something like "Imagine waking up every morning to sound of safari wildlife in every direction around you."

Step 4 Finish the introduction.

  • For example, if you're giving a small speech about yourself to your class you can say something like "First I'll tell you a little bit about my past, and then I'll tell you about some of my interests and aspirations. I'll close with my plans for my career."

Step 5 Continue with the body of the speech.

  • For example, if you're writing an introductory speech for a college organization, like a photography club, you might start the body with a paragraph about how you got interested in photography. The opening sentence might go like "Photography caught my interest very early on, especially with its ability to caption and preserve life's precious moments." The closing sentence might look like "Since then, I've been eagerly pursuing more knowledge on the ins and outs of what makes a photo great."

Step 6 End with a strong conclusion.

  • For example, if your speech was about your interest and experience in the film industry, you can tie your own experiences with the idea of cinema on a grand scale. The conclusion should focus on the overarching importance of the topic of your speech.
  • If your speech is simply to introduce yourself, you can end with a less grand conclusion. The conclusion of a self-introduction speech should reiterate and summarize the most important parts of your speech, the main details about yourself that you shared.

Improving Your Speech

Step 1 Take inspiration from other speeches.

  • Read your speech out loud as well. This will help you hear the rhythm of the speech and make adjustments to improve its flow. Fragments are okay, as long as they're used sparingly. Use active verbs in favor of passive ones.
  • When reading your speech out loud to yourself, note any sentences that are too long to be spoken comfortably in one breath. Split these sentences up as you edit.

Step 3 Include signposts.

  • When running through a short list of ideas, numeric signposts are used like "first," "second," and "third," or "firstly," "secondly," and "thirdly."
  • Signposts that show how two ideas relate to each other include, "furthermore," "in addition," "nevertheless," "however," "subsequently," and "for instance."
  • Major signposts tell the listener where in the speech you are. For example, the first paragraph will often start with something like, "I'd like to start by..." and the final paragraph will often start with something like "To summarize..."

Step 4 Avoid cliches.

  • What do you replace cliches with? First you have to deduce the basic meaning of the cliche phrase, then you can either think of a more interesting way to say the same thing, or, in many cases, you can forgo the phrase entirely.
  • For example, the phrase "in conclusion" means that you are signaling that you going to summarize all the ideas previously stated. This can be replaced by something like, "So what does this all mean?" or "I've told you a lot about myself. Here's the reason."
  • Often, cliche phrases are just filler that don't add anything important to the speech. Instead of saying, "Today I'll be talking to you about..." just start talking about it.

Step 5 Talk about yourself with humble confidence.

  • Avoid speaking too highly of yourself. For example, saying "everyone know's that I'm the best soccer player on the team..." when receiving the captain award in the presence of your entire soccer team probably won't go over well.
  • If, for example, you're the best soccer player on your team, you can instead humbly highlight your accomplishments by saying something like, "I've beat my personal record this season and scored 12 total goals. While it feels great to set this record, I know that it wouldn't be possible without the hard work and help of my teammates."
  • If you feel uncomfortable, it's okay to add some humor or briefly acknowledge that you feel awkward about talking about yourself. This will just make your audience feel like they can relate better to you.

At the JSS level, students are at a transitional stage of life as they mature from childhood to adulthood. At this stage of life, they are more interested in themselves than at any other time, and they are trying to learn to come to terms with their physical and emotional selves. Expressing their thoughts and feelings is important to them, but they may lack the ability to project themselves with confidence in front of other people, especially in a different language. In this unit, we will introduce some activities that you can use in the class to develop your students’ ability to talk about themselves in English. By sharing personal information through information - gap activities, students will learn to use English appropriately in both formal and informal situations.

When engaging students in activities that require them to share personal information or describe one another, we should be careful to discourage comments on physical appearance, race, gender or skin colour as this might be offensive or hurtful. Also, both the teacher and students should practise speaking clearly, audibly and in a relaxed pace to ensure mutual intelligibility.

Self-Awareness Intermediate (Gr. 3–4)

IDentity activity

Find this activity in the student portfolio​

Objective: Students will be able to identify who they are, what they like and dislike, and recognize their strengths and weaknesses. ​

Estimated Duration: 20 minutes

Description: Self-identity is how you identify and define yourself. It is made up of many parts including your values, beliefs, personality traits, physical attributes, abilities, hobbies, and interests.  

It is the combination of these things that make up your self-identity. It’s important to have a strong sense of self-identity to be able to adapt to changes and overcome challenges. 

Having a strong sense of who you are can help anchor you during uncertain times and help you develop positive self-esteem.  

When helping children discover their self-identity, it is important to encourage them to look at all the things that make them who they are and not to identify with just one part of themselves.  

When children tie themselves firmly to just one part of who they are, they can struggle to find their self-identity if they experience failure or are not successful in that one part. Knowing that they are so much more can help them develop a strong sense of self-identify.  

This activity will allow students to think about who they are at this moment in time. They will document their values, beliefs, personality, culture, and the many other things that make them who they are.  

Teachable Moments: There are many ways you can improve and build self-identity in your students: 

  • Emphasize healthy values 
  • Teach students to recognize unhealthy media messages 
  • Highlight students’ strengths and passions 
  • Encourage students to get involved in healthy activities 
  • Ban harsh criticism  
  • Be a good role model 
  • Let students help 

Shades of Emotions activity

Objective: Students will be able to identify the range of emotions they have. 

Estimated Duration: 20 minutes 

Description: Emotional awareness is the ability to notice, accurately name, and interpret our emotions. It is an important skill students need to be successful in life.  

Emotional awareness helps us know what we need and want (or don't want!) and helps to build better relationships. That's because being aware of our emotions can help us talk about feelings more clearly, avoid and resolve conflicts appropriately, and move past difficult feelings more easily. 

Many children can express being happy, sad, or mad, but often they miss the subtle gradations or shades in emotions. This is because they don’t have the words to describe them.  

Naming emotions accurately helps students be clearer about what is happening inside, so they can manage themselves in positive ways and become better learners. 

This activity will help students build their emotional vocabulary. First, they will choose one emotion and list its shades (e.g., happy, joyful, elated).  Next, they will draw a face to show what that emotion looks like and describe what makes them feel that shade.  

Teachable Moments: There are many ways you can help students identify their emotions: 

  • Talk about your emotions and feelings; ask students about theirs 
  • Have students name their emotions and the behaviors or body language associated with them 
  • Model reactions and emotional behavior 
  • Use characters in books to illustrate different emotions, facial expressions, and behaviors 
  • Have students create a thesaurus of emotions to use when they need to find the right word to describe how they are feeling  
  • Have students create a mood meter to help them identify how they are feeling; this can be especially helpful to students who find it difficult to talk about their emotions. 

My Wins activity

Objective: Students will be able to build self-esteem.  

Description: Self-esteem is a person’s sense of worth. Students with high self-esteem feel confident and capable. They value themselves and their abilities.  

When students feel confident and secure, they are more likely to succeed in school and achieve personal goals. They are also more likely to motivate themselves to take on new challenges and cope with and learn from mistakes. They may stand up for themselves more and ask for help when they need it. 

This activity will help students build self-esteem by having them draw or write about situations that they felt very proud of themselves. They can bookmark the page to come back to for a little boost of confidence throughout the year. 

Teachable Moments: There are many ways you can improve and build self-esteem in your students: 

  • Greet every child at the door with a smile and say his or her name. 
  • Touch base with every child. 
  • Encourage students to advocate for themselves. 
  • Give constructive criticism and include time for detailed feedback. 
  • Let students fix mistakes. 
  • Encourage students to find things they like about themselves. 
  • Teach students to learn from their mistakes. 
  • Celebrate student successes. 

Grow my Brain activity

Objective: Students will be able to build a growth mindset. 

Description: A growth mindset is when you believe your intelligence and abilities can be improved with practice and the power of growing your brain. It is important for students to learn to adopt a growth mindset because it can help them overcome obstacles when they learn something new or develop a new skill. When students use a growth mindset, they understand the importance of persistence and determination. They see roadblocks and constructive feedback as methods to gather information to help themselves learn and progress. Instead of giving up in the face of challenges, students with a growth mindset keep going because they believe they can achieve the goal. 

This activity will help students build a growth mindset by writing a collection of daily affirmations that they can use to help overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts.  

Teachable Moments: There are many ways you can help improve and build a growth mindset in your students: 

  • Be mindful of feedback, emphasize improvement over talent and intelligence. 
  • Praise the process, not just the end result. 
  • Include reflection as a part of assignments. 
  • Discuss your own experiences and struggles. 
  • Explain that failure is a part of the process of learning new things. 
  • Use diverse teaching strategies. 
  • Provide attainable challenges. 
  • Give opportunities to face obstacles. 

Foldable®: Selfie Moments

Estimated Duration: 25-30 minutes

My emotions change foldable

Flip-Book Pocket

  • Cut along the solid black lines of the Flip-Book Pocket. 
  • Glue the left and bottom edges onto the gray strips in the student book.
  • Make the Flip-Book while the glue on the Pocket is drying.  

Flip-Book Foldable 

  • Cut along the solid black lines of the page. This will form seven cards with faces.  Cut away the gray sections on each card. Each card will be a different length.   
  • Stack the cards, so the numbered edges line up. When finished, #1 (the shortest card) will be on top and #7 (the longest card) will be on the bottom. 
  • When the left edges are aligned and stacked together, staple through all thicknesses to form an Emotions Flip-Book.   
  • Hold the stapled edge in your left hand and flip the edges of the cards with your right hand. Practice flipping rapidly to make the face change from happy to sad.   
  • Ask students to fill in the emotion box on each card to reflect which of their emotions they think each face represents. Don’t use the same emotion twice. When they are done, have them use the lines under the Flip-Book pocket to write about their favorite Selfie Moment.

  • Cut along the outside solid black lines of the If I have positive self-esteem… Foldable.  
  • Fold along the dotted line at the top of the rectangle to form an anchor tab. Glue the folded tab on top of the gray If I have positive self-esteem… anchor tab space in the student book.   
  • Discuss how If…Then sentences are written. Relate them to cause and effect. Students complete the sentence under the tab.

  • Cut along the outside solid black lines of the Me Trying Something Difficult Foldable. Have students draw a picture of themselves attempting something new or practicing something they are learning. 
  • Fold along the dotted line at the top of the Foldable to form an anchor tab. Glue the folded tab on top of the gray Me Trying Something Difficult… anchor tab space in the student book. 
  • Under the tab, observe the outline of a brain and discuss the title – This is how I grow my brain. Students record present and future ways they plan to grow their brains. This is a private writing area covered by a tab.

A speech about yourself, also known as a personal introduction or self-introduction speech, is a type of speech in which you talk about your own background, experience, skills, interests, and goals. The purpose of this type of speech is to introduce yourself to an audience and give them an understanding of who you are and what you stand for.

10 Lines About Myself

Allow me to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Varsha Patil and I am a 19-year-old aspiring lecturer.

Growing up in a close-knit family has been one of the greatest blessings of my life.

My parents, grandparents, older brother, and I make up a family unit that is overflowing with love, care, and support.

We have a strong bond and spend much of our time together, enjoying meals, vacations, and just being there for each other.

It is these shared experiences and memories that have helped shape me into the person I am today.

I have always had a passion for education and teaching, which is why becoming a lecturer has been my childhood dream.

My love for learning and helping others is what drives me towards this goal.

In my free time, I love to immerse myself in music, watch movies, and engage in creative pursuits such as drawing, cooking, and reading.

My mother is a homemaker and my father is a farmer, and I strive to repay their love and support by working hard and giving them a good life.

Having such a loving family is truly a blessing, and I am grateful for all the joy and love they bring into my life.

Short Speech On Myself

My name is Varsha Patil. I'm an undergraduate student and I'm 19 years old. I live in Maharashtra and I am a second-year B. Com. student. We have six people in our family. My mother works as a homemaker, and my father is a farmer. One of my siblings is older than I am. I consider myself to be a very quiet and shy person. People usually assume from my shy attitude that I am unable to communicate confidently.

However, it is not true because I am very knowledgeable about many various topics. But before I talk, I want to consider the surroundings and the circumstances. I would like to be humble and considerate enough to respond to queries when someone approaches me. I enjoy a variety of things, including listening to music, reading books, and watching movies. I adore reading romantic novels and gripping thrillers.

There are many alternative careers that may be pursued, but Animator & Graphic Designer is the one that interests me the most. I think one should choose the career path according to their interests and passion. An animation course is time-consuming to study. I have many friends in school with whom I play during my lunch break. My class teacher is very nice and polite. She helps me to understand and learn my lessons easily.

My father is a policeman. He works very hard from morning till night. My mother is a teacher. They both love me a lot. My brother is still too young to go to school. He stays with the nanny till my mother comes back home. Being the baby of the family, he is everyone’s favorite.

The standardized Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program tests, also known as TNReady or TCAPs, kick off this week statewide.

Last year's rollout of a controversial third grade reading and retention law placed the TCAP under intense scrutiny. As the law took effect in 2023, the sole measurement of reading proficiency was each third grader's score on the English language arts section of the TCAP. But experts, teachers and education leaders argue it's not a reading proficiency test but rather a test of reading comprehension.

State lawmakers added a provision to the reading law to allow universal reading screening assessments to be considered in decisions on holding children back or not.

So what exactly does the English language arts section of the TCAP entail for third graders? A practice test, available online through the Tennessee Department of Education offers some insight.

Part 1: Rory's funny story

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.

"Rory's Funny Story" by Janice Graham

1 Everybody in Rory’s class had a Funny-but-True story to tell. The teacher, Mrs. Evans, had the best Funny-but- True stories of all. On Monday she told about her cat playing the piano. On Tuesday she told how she found a nibbled-on piece of bologna in the toe of her red high-heeled shoe. On Wednesday she told about a mysterious truck dumping a mountain of rocks in her driveway. The neighborhood kids climbed and played on it until the truck came back to move the mountain to the right address.

2 Mrs. Evans had a million funny stories. But Rory couldn’t think of even one to tell.

3 “It’s time again for our Funny-but-True stories,” announced Mrs. Evans on Thursday. “Who has one today?”

4 Rory slumped in his chair.

5 “I have a Funny-but-True!” cried Dana, waving wildly. “My big sister lost her new diamond engagement ring. She was really worried. My mom looked in all the places my sister had been. And there it was in a basket of laundry, sparkling in the dirty socks!”

6 The class smiled, and some people chuckled. Rory leaned forward and plopped his chin on his desk. Nothing funny ever happened to him.

7 Friday’s Funny-but-True was the best one yet. Tad told how his sister had found a hairy black tarantula the size of her hand in the bathroom medicine chest. After she was through screaming her head off, she decided to keep the spider for a pet. Rory sighed. The class would laugh about that one all through lunch recess. Somewhere in his life there had to be one Funny-but-True story. But Rory knew his weekend would be just the same old boring thing.

8 Rory’s dad promised they would try out the new dome tent in the backyard Friday night. “Just my luck,” thought Rory when a lightning storm blew up. He shuffled into the house to find his dad had turned it into a campground. The new tent filled up the living room like a big blue elephant. “What next?” thought Rory.

9 On Saturday, Rory’s four-year-old sister decided to see if her baby bunny could swim. Just in time Rory saved the soggy bunny from a bucket of water. While Mom gently blow-dried the little rabbit, he explained to his sister that bunnies can’t swim. “Silly kid,” thought Rory.

10 On Sunday Rory and his family piled into the car and headed for Grandma’s house. Passing drivers stared and pointed. When they got there, Rory discovered that their cat, Tiger, had ridden to Grandma’s on the roof of the car. “Dumb cat,” thought Rory.

11 “Time for Funny-but-Trues!” said Mrs. Evans on Monday. Rory looked around the room. He was sure Dana or Tad had another great story, but nobody spoke up.

12 “Rory, how about you?” asked Mrs. Evans.

13 Rory shook his head. “Nothing funny ever happens to me.”

14 “Oh, I bet funny things happen all the time,” said Mrs. Evans.

15 “Tell us about your weekend.”

16 Rory told about sleeping in a tent in the living room. The class looked surprised. He saw a few smiles. Next he told about the bunny’s swimming lessons. A few people giggled. When he told about Tiger riding on the roof of the car all the way to Grandma’s house, the class broke into roars of laughter.

17 Rory tried, but he couldn’t stop laughing either.

Part 2: Tatenda teaches his town

"Tatenda Teaches His Town" by Cecil Dzwowa

1 Like many families in Sanyati, a small countryside town in western Zimbabwe¹, Tatenda’s family does not have a television. One day after school, Tatenda arrived home tired and decided to rest on the sofa. But just before he sat down, he noticed something unusual in the house. “At first, I thought Dad had bought a television set, but when my mother said it was a computer, I was disappointed.”

2 It’s not that Tatenda didn’t like computers; he just didn’t know how to use them.

3 For almost two weeks, the gift lay idle in the house. Tatenda and his father didn’t even know how to turn it on. “Nobody in our neighborhood knew how to operate a computer,” Tatenda said.

4 But things changed when Amina, a young family friend, came from Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, to visit. Amina knew all about computers and was a good teacher, too.

Pressing the Wrong Buttons

5 At first, Tatenda and Amina were frustrated as Tatenda struggled to learn. “I was always pressing the wrong buttons,” Tatenda remembered. “But I kept on going because I was eager to learn.” Amina realized then that she could not keep Tatenda away from the computer. After three weeks, Tatenda mastered some computer basics, such as opening and closing files. But he was taking a long time to learn.

6 Tatenda kept on practicing after Amina left. His speed slowly improved. By the time Amina returned, Tatenda felt comfortable with the computer.

7 Meanwhile, Tatenda’s friends wondered what had happened to him. Tatenda had not told them about his new gadget. He no longer played soccer after school like he used to. “Even if he came, he did not spend much time with us. He always had an excuse for going back home,” his friend Saidi said.

8 Tatenda’s friends worried. Were Tatenda’s parents preventing him from playing with them? Did one of them do something wrong? Did Tatenda have new friends?

9 One day, Saidi, along with two other friends, Themba and Solomon, surprised Tatenda at home. When they arrived, Tatenda was so busy on the computer that he did not hear them. His mother opened the door and let his friends inside. They couldn’t believe what they saw — a computer and Tatenda operating it.

10 “It was too late,” Tatenda recalled. “My secret was out.”

11 But it was a new beginning for the three friends. After that surprise visit, they came to see Tatenda work on the computer. Then Tatenda let them press a button or two and shake the mouse for fun. Slowly, he taught them how to use the computer. Saidi took about three months to learn the basics; Themba, about four months; and Solomon, a year.

12 It wasn’t long before the neighborhood kids wanted to learn, too! “There were so many kids coming to see him that we had to move the computer out of his room into a bigger room,” his mother said.

13 And even more kids came. Tatenda worried. The computer began to experience problems because the kids were pressing too many buttons. So he came up with a plan. He began charging for lessons. But this did not stop more kids from coming. Those whose parents did not have money paid with chickens or goats.

14 Tatenda has taught computer skills to 30 students from his local school, and the number continues to grow. There are 600 students there and no computer. Two of the teachers at his school are also his students. “He is a bright kid and a good teacher,” said Mrs. Magumise, one of Tatenda’s schoolteachers.

15 With the money earned from teaching, Tatenda has bought a television and radio for his family. And he plans to buy a new computer. He also plans to keep on teaching. The people of Sanyati couldn’t be more pleased. Tatenda has single-handedly introduced computers to his town and is simply known there as “Teacher.”
