Studentships and doctoral training

Get a studentship to fund your doctorate.

UKRI studentships offer funding for doctoral research. They also offer you access to training, networking and development opportunities to help you build a research and innovation career.

Our expectations for research organisations, supervisors and students are set out in the statement of expectations for doctoral training .

You could get:

  • a minimum stipend of £19,237 per year for your living costs, which is paid to you in regular instalments
  • support for your tuition fees (minimum £4,786 per year)

The stipend is usually non-taxable and does not need to be paid back. Some research organisations may offer more if you study in London, or they or one of their collaborators might decide to top up the payment. This will be outlined in the studentship advert from the research organisation.

We normally pay the support for tuition fees directly to your research organisation.

The levels given here are for the academic year 2024 to 2025. UKRI’s approach to doctoral stipend and fee levels will be reviewed through the  new deal for postgraduate research .

Additional support for your doctoral studies

As a UKRI-funded doctoral student, you may be able to access additional funding to cover the cost of other related training and development opportunities.

This could include:

  • conference attendance
  • language training
  • overseas research visits
  • internships or placements with a non-academic partner

The availability of support will depend on the research organisation and the training grants they have on offer. You should contact the research organisation you are interested in applying to, to find out what you could get.

Extra support if you have a disability

If you have a disability, you may be entitled to a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) on top of your studentship.

You should speak to your research organisation’s disability advisor to assess your needs. They can help put the right support in place, including a DSA application if necessary. You cannot claim DSA directly from UKRI.

DSA helps to cover the cost of any additional support that a person studying for a doctorate might need as a result of a disability, mental health problem or specific learning difficulty.

The allowance covers:

  • non-medical personal assistance
  • specialist equipment
  • extra travel costs
  • general expenses

Find out more about DSA in our framework .

If you are a research organisation you can download claim forms and guidance for DSA .

Who can apply

Any prospective doctoral student wishing to study at a UK research organisation, including prospective international students, can apply for a UKRI studentship.

All UKRI-funded doctoral students will be eligible for the full award, both the stipend to support living costs, and home-level fees at the UK research organisation rate.

How to find opportunities

Many UK research organisations offer some form of studentship funding from UKRI. These opportunities will depend on the subject you want to study and will normally be advertised by the research organisations.

Research organisations may have additional opportunities that do not involve UKRI. UKRI supports around 20% of all UK-based postgraduate researchers. You should speak to the research organisation you are interested in to find out what studentships are available.

You could also consider using a specialist website like   FindaPhD  to look for opportunities.

When to apply

Research organisations set their own deadlines for applications.

Many open for applications early in the academic year and close in January or February. This is not a hard and fast rule. It is important that you check the deadlines for the research organisation where you want to study.

How to apply

You cannot apply to UKRI for a studentship. You must contact the research organisation you are interested in studying with and use their application process.

For doctoral students who are already studying with a studentship, there are opportunities to get additional funding to support placements that are separate from your doctorate.  Find training and development opportunities .

However, for security reasons or in other exceptional circumstances, sometimes we may need to give a cookie a longer lifespan.

Web browser cookies may store info such as your IP address or other identifiers, your browser type, and info about the content you view and interact with on digital services. By storing this info, web browser cookies can remember your preferences and settings for online services and analyze how you use them.

Along with cookies, we also use tracking technologies that are very similar. Our Site may contain small transparent image files or lines of code that record how you interact with them. These include "web beacons," "scripts," "tracking URLs," or "software development kits" (known as SDKs):

Web beacons have a lot of different names. They might also be known as web bugs, tracking bugs, tags, web tags, page tags, tracking pixels, pixel tags, 1x1 GIFs, or clear GIFs. In short, these beacons are a tiny graphic image of just one pixel that can be delivered to your device as part of a web page request, in an app, an advertisement, or an HTML email message. They can be used to retrieve info from your device, such as your device type, operating system, IP address, and the time of your visit. They are also used to serve and read cookies in your browser or to trigger the placement of a cookie.

Scripts are small computer programs embedded within our web pages that give those pages a wide variety of extra functionality. Scripts make it possible for the website to function properly. For example, scripts power certain security features and enable basic interactive features on our website. Scripts can also be used for analytical or advertising purposes. For example, a script can collect info about how you use our website, such as which pages you visit or what you search for.

Tracking URLs are links with a unique identifier in them. These are used to track which website brought you to the Site. An example woold be if you clicked from a social media page, search engine, or one of our affiliate partners' websites.

Software Development Kits (SDKs) are part of our apps' source code. Unlike browser cookies, SDK data is stored in the app storage. They're used to analyze how the apps are being used or to send personalized push notifications. To do this, they record unique identifiers associated with your device, like your device ID, IP address, in-app activity, and network location.

All these tracking technologies are referred to as "cookies" here in this Cookie Statement. However, no Personal Information identifying the user is collected nor any data capture mechanisms are employed. The user may change browser settings to accept or reject cookies on personal preference. You have the ability to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify the browser setting to decline cookies if you so prefer. If you choose to decline cookies, you may not be able to sign in or use other interactive features of the Site that may depend on cookies. If you choose to accept cookies, you also have the ability to later delete cookies that you have accepted. If you choose to delete cookies, any settings and preferences controlled by those cookies, including advertising preferences, will be deleted and may need to be recreated. We process and keep all data for our own use and, if you wish to opt-out from tracking by TC Global you can do so at [email protected]

Unlocking scholarships in UK and US: Your path to affordable overseas education

Applications that carry consistently strong academic records, letters of recommendation from teachers and demonstrate teamwork and leadership skills, are picked up instantly to be awarded scholarships..

Listen to Story

Unlocking scholarships in UK and US: Your path to affordable overseas education

Who says studying overseas is expensive? With so many scholarships available for international students, your dream of studying abroad is within easy reach. Almost every country that is exporting education has rolled out coveted scholarship awards if you qualify. It must be mentioned here that any economy that wants to grow cannot afford to lose the best of minds. These scholarships are a way to say that if you have got the talent you are most welcome here.

Gold Mines for Students Aspiring to Study in the UK

High-achieving students across various disciplines aspiring to study in the UK are offered several prestigious scholarships, including the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme. It assists students with excellent academic performance and benefits them as they pursue higher education in the UK. These students are not able to study in the UK due to financial constraints.

Scholarships to Fund Your Studies in the US

Scholarships are one way to bridge the gap between the cost of attendance and need-based financial requirements. Highly motivated individuals who demonstrate outstanding qualities and remarkable work experience can be rewarded through Fellowships for Indian Students provided by the United States-India Educational Foundation.

How to Become a Magnet for Scholarship?

In the majority of the scholarship options that are available for international students, one does not have to apply specifically for them. Students are automatically considered for scholarships when they apply for a programme, and if they have already shown their calibre the benefit will be accorded to them. With that being said, how can you be a magnet for scholarships so that these rewards come to you?

Show that you are a dedicated student, as good academic records are the starting point to be considered for scholarships for studying in any country. This is something that will take its own time to accomplish, and there is no shortcut. The next checkpoint is how well you score on tests like IELTS, TOEFL and SAT. A high score here affects how good your application will look.

You are good at proving yourself, but how good others consider you will also be an important determining factor. Recommendation letters from teachers and professors will add glitter to your credibility. A well-written essay is your chance to talk about your plans and ambitions. Your current qualifications should align with the goals mentioned in the essay and should look convincing and practical enough.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Important Updates

  • The priority filing date for the 2024-25 FAFSA and CADAA has been extended to May 2, 2024 . Visit Apply for Financial Aid for details.
  • The Department of Education has announced they will send information from the 2024-25 FAFSA to schools in mid-March. This may result in a delay in financial aid packaging and offers for the 2024-25 academic year. While awaiting your financial aid offer, we encourage you to utilize the UC Davis Financial Aid Estimator  to estimate your potential aid.

UC Native American Opportunity Plan

What is the uc native american opportunity plan.

The UC Native American Opportunity Plan (UCNAOP) ensures that in-state systemwide Tuition and Student Services Fees are fully covered for California undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in federally recognized Native American, American Indian, and/or Alaska Native tribes.

Financial aid sources that satisfy, in part or in full, the promise under the Native American Opportunity Plan include the following:

  • Tuition‐specific aid (e.g., Cal Grant, veteran’s tuition benefits, tribal benefits)
  • Institutional aid and UC scholarships
  • Federal Pell Grant and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
  • Tuition and fee remissions

If a student's total aid from these sources equals or exceeds the UC systemwide tuition and fees, then the Native American Opportunity Plan promise has been satisfied.

If a student's aid from these sources does not fully cover the UC systemwide tuition and fees, the Native American Opportunity Plan will make up the difference with UC grant funding.

What are the eligibility requirements?

To be eligible for the UC Native American Opportunity Plan, students must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Must be a current or newly admitted University of California undergraduate, graduate, or professional school student.
