Frequently Asked Questions About History Ph.D. Programs

Can you get a history ph.d. without a master’s.

Yes, you can earn a Ph.D. in history without a master’s degree. Many history Ph.D. programs admit candidates with just a bachelor’s degree; however, some programs recommend or require a master’s in history to enter the doctoral program.

How long does a Ph.D. in history take?

Earning a Ph.D. in history typically takes at least five years. That’s because doctoral programs require 2-3 years of coursework, comprehensive exams, and a research-based dissertation that may run over 300 pages. Many programs include foreign language requirements, too.

Does a Ph.D. in history make you a doctor?

Yes, earning an on-campus or online Ph.D. in history makes you a doctor. The doctor of philosophy degree, which is the highest degree in academia, qualifies graduates for college-level teaching and research roles.

Therefore, graduates with a Ph.D. in history can use the title “doctor.”

What percentage of history Ph.D.-holders get tenure-track jobs?

Fewer than half of history Ph.D. grads land tenure-track jobs in the years after earning their degree. For historians who earned a Ph.D. between 2014 and 2017, around 35% held a tenure-track job in 2022, according to the American Historical Association .

With fewer tenure-track job openings than Ph.D. graduates, students earning a Ph.D. in history should consider career paths outside academia.

Is it worth doing a Ph.D. in history?

A Ph.D. in history is worth the time, cost, and effort for many people. Earning a Ph.D. in history can strengthen your research, critical thinking, and writing skills. Doctoral students also conduct advanced research in their specialty areas.

That said, a Ph.D. in history requires a substantial time commitment. Consider your reasons for pursuing a Ph.D., the total cost of the program, and your career options before applying to on-campus or online history Ph.D. programs.

What to Expect from Online Ph.D. History Programs

The online Ph.D. history program combines a demanding scholarly education with the freedom to follow one’s intellectual passions. Candidates will gain a firm foundation in historical theory, research techniques, and methodology through their coursework. They will create a study plan with the help of their academic advisor that will align with their academic objectives. Students will learn and be able to use research tools, including oral history, quantitative research approaches, new media, and other methodologies.

An online Ph.D. history program usually takes about five years of full-time study. However, many students can finish it sooner. The program’s framework and curriculum are based on concentrations of study, such as American history, European history, or military history, and may also include a thematic concentration. All candidates for the history Ph.D. will undergo examinations based on the coursework. A student is not immediately qualified for a degree upon completing a predetermined number of graduate hours. In addition, the student must complete a language requirement, perform well on written and oral exams, and complete and successfully defend a doctoral dissertation to qualify for the Ph.D. The dissertation written by a Ph.D. candidate is expected to make a noteworthy, original contribution to historical knowledge and must be completed using unique, independent research in the area of specialty. The finished dissertation will be defended during the final oral examination.

Here is a quick break-up of the online Ph.D. history program (varies by institution):

The course selection for history doctoral students is broad. In most instances, students can choose their course plans from one area of history to fit their needs and professional objectives.

In many instances, Ph.D. students must fulfill a teaching requirement. This criterion is met when the student works as a teaching assistant (TA) or instructor of record (IoR) for at least one semester.

Some schools require one year of continuous full-time study. During this time, the student is expected to make significant progress preparing for their comprehensive examinations.

Comprehensive Exam

After completing the required curriculum, students can take a comprehensive exam, usually in written form. However, in some instances, students are allowed to compose a manuscript on a topic of their choosing and defend it orally in front of a committee of departmental, school, and/or university teachers. The candidate’s specific fields of study will be considered when designing the Ph.D. exams.

Dissertation & Defense

A Ph.D. student must write and deliver to the dissertation committee a written dissertation proposal. The proposal should include the research problem, study plan, and potential influence on the field. Following the public presentation, the proposal will be presented in an open forum, and the student must successfully defend it before the dissertation committee.

Field Experience/Internship

Doctoral candidates are encouraged to do independent study research courses that combine and connect classroom theory with field activities. They can interact with historical communities by conducting studies and collecting data from diverse sources. At some colleges, this is a mandatory requirement.

Online Ph.D. History No GRE Programs

Many graduate schools require the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as a prerequisite for admission because it assesses a candidate’s independence and motivation to complete graduate-level study and research. Fortunately, many institutions are moving toward making the GRE obsolete or optional. However, schools that require the GRE may impose stricter admissions standards, such as a minimum undergraduate GPA, work experience, certification, recommendation letters, writing samples, etc. Some universities offering Ph.D. in history no GRE programs are Montana State University , Northwestern University , and Liberty University .

How Long does it take to complete the Online Ph.D. History Program?

Some online Ph.D. history programs can be completed in as little as 4 years, while others can take as long as 8. Depending on how long a student spends conducting research and writing for their dissertation, the length of their Ph.D. program can vary widely. Students should consider the time commitment required for a history Ph.D. program before enrolling. A doctorate in history entails the following time commitments:

  • Minimum time required for a full-time online Ph.D. history: about 4 years.
  • Maximum time required for an online Ph.D. history: up to 8 years.
  • Typical time frame to complete an online Ph.D. history: about 4 to 5 years.
  • Typical number of credit hours for an online Ph.D. history: between 70 and 75 (varies by college and program)

Accelerated Online Ph.D. History Programs

Students who take advantage of accelerated learning opportunities typically finish their doctoral programs earlier. Through a streamlined doctoral program, one can earn one’s online Ph.D. history in about 4 years. However, even after completing all the necessary coursework, it may take another year to complete the dissertation. Some universities allow students with master’s degrees to enter their doctoral programs. A master’s thesis can be “promoted” to the doctoral dissertation stage under these conditions. Prospective students interested in history doctoral programs should consult faculty members about accelerating their studies.

Accreditations for Online Ph.D. History Programs

Accreditation is one of the most important factors for prospective students to consider when enrolling in an online Ph.D. history program. The organizations that accredit colleges and universities in the United States are approved by the United States Department of Education ( USDE ) and the Council of Higher Education Accreditation ( CHEA ). Accreditation necessitates an in-depth examination of a school’s academic offerings as well as student support services. Because a school’s accreditation affects both course credit transferability and a student’s eligibility for federal financial aid, prospective students should check to see if the institution offering the program has received national or regional accreditation from organizations like:

  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges ( NEASC )
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education ( MSCHE )
  • Higher Learning Commission ( HLC )
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges ( SACSCOC )
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities ( NWCCU )
  • Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission ( WSCUC )

Read the Guide to College Accreditation to learn more about accreditation.

How to Pay for an Online Ph.D. History Program?

Even if a potential online student has no other out-of-pocket expenses for school, they may not be able to afford the high tuition and associated research costs. The Graduate Program

Columbia has been one of the most important centers of graduate education in history since modern Ph.D. programs began in America over a century ago. Recipients of our degrees hold distinguished positions in virtually every major university in the United States, and in many abroad. Our program offers a broad education in most areas of historical scholarship and attempts to train students for a discipline and a profession in the midst of considerable change. That includes not simply assisting students in acquiring the knowledge and skills essential to becoming contributing scholars, but also helping them to become effective teachers and to exist comfortably within a demanding and complicated professional world.

The members of our faculty represent many different approaches to the study of the past, and we strive to attract students of similarly diverse interests and commitments. No one should feel that being at Columbia requires accepting any one approach to the study of history.

This part of our website is designed to provide both prospective and current students with answers to some of the many questions they may have about the department.

Admissions answers commonly-asked questions about our admissions process.

Under Ph.D. Fields you will find information about the separate fields of study available in our program and the relationship among them.

Fellowships and Financial Aid explains the various ways we provide our students with fellowships and financial aid.

Dissertations-in-Progress summarizes the course of study towards the Ph.D and highlights the work of our students.

Research awards and recent honors are showcased in Award Announcements .

The section entitled Placement sketches how we prepare our students for the academic job market and reports on how our students have done in that market in recent years.

In the Graduate Handbook , we explain our curriculum and our academic requirements and provide more detailed information about aspects of the program such as the MA, Orals, M.Phil., Dissertations, etc.

Our FAQs are useful for students seeking admission as well as for current students seeking quick information.

The Annual Newsletter keeps us informed about our students.

Interim Director of Doctoral Studies (Spring 2024) : Professor Alison Games Graduate Programs Manager : Carolina Madinaveitia Student Assistant to the Director of Doctoral Studies : Ashley Mayor

Welcome to Georgetown’s Ph.D. program in History! We are a top-notch program with strengths in multiple fields, including the United States, Early Modern and Modern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Russia and the Soviet Union, and East Asia. We encourage students with interests that span geographical regions, such as Environmental, Atlantic, and Diplomatic History. Our doctoral student community numbers roughly 100, with new cohorts of 10-12 fully-funded students each year. Our alumni have gone on to distinguished careers as historians in and out of the academy.

Our Ph.D. program has much to offer. In addition to the attention of a distinguished and award-winning History faculty, our students benefit from Georgetown’s many regional studies programs and intellectual centers, where interdisciplinary activity is prized. Opportunities for language training abound. No city has greater resources for historians than Washington, D.C.: the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the National Library of Medicine, the Folger Shakespeare Library, and many other institutions hold an unparalleled wealth of research material.

Our doctoral program is collegial and collaborative, with a vibrant intellectual life. Outside of class, students participate in seminars and conferences along with faculty, share in the activities of our Institute for Global History, grow through professional development workshops, and socialize with each other when the academic day is over. It’s a fun place to be a serious historian.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i get a doctoral degree online.

Yes! At Liberty University, we offer 75+ postgraduate degrees, professional doctorates, and PhD programs online. Most of these programs are available 100% online with no set login times. That means you can stay invested in your family, job, and community while working toward your degree. As long as your assignments are completed by their respective due dates, you can complete your coursework on your schedule — whenever it’s most convenient for you.

Liberty has been a pioneer in distance learning since 1985, so we know what it takes to create online degrees that blend flexibility, accessibility, and high-quality academics. Throughout your online doctoral program, you’ll have easy access to textbooks, syllabi, videos, and more as you complete your assignments. Our professors are also available to answer any questions you may have, and they are excited to partner with you as you take this next step in your academic journey.

While the majority of our doctorates are offered 100% online, some programs — such as our post-BSN DNP in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and DNP in Family Nurse Practitioner — also have required  on-campus intensives . That means most of your courses will be completed online, and you’ll travel to our campus in Lynchburg, Va., for the remaining few courses.

Additionally, our PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision is an intensive-based program, which means many of the courses are on-campus intensives. Residential intensives give you the exciting opportunity to visit our campus and connect in-person with other professionals in your program.

At Liberty, we’re committed to providing degrees that meet your unique learning style. Whether you’re seeking a 100% online program or want to take some in-person courses, we have what you need!

Can I pursue a doctorate without a master’s?

Most of our doctoral degrees online require a master’s degree for admission to help ensure that you are ready for doctoral-level coursework. However, both our post-BSN DNP in Family Nurse Practitioner and our post-BSN DNP in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner allow you to apply with only a bachelor’s degree! These 2 programs cover the foundational and advanced topics needed to help you seamlessly transition from an undergraduate program to a doctoral degree.

Are online doctoral programs credible?

If you’re like many students, you’re probably wondering whether an online doctoral degree program offers the same rigor and credibility as a residential degree. As long as you select a university and/or program that is accredited, you can be confident that your online doctorate will hold weight as a respected, advanced educational credential.

Liberty University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges ( SACSCOC ) to award associate, bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees. Our faculty members are well-respected leaders in their fields who use their expertise to help further your proficiency in research, examination, and application of your knowledge. Whether you pursue an online PhD, EdD, DBA, DMin, or any of our other doctoral programs, you can gain valuable knowledge as you develop into a leader of distinction.

Additionally, many of our schools have achieved programmatic accreditation, including the following:

  • Liberty University’s PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs ( CACREP ).
  • Liberty University’s School of Business is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs ( ACBSP ).
  • Liberty University’s John W. Rawlings School of Divinity is accredited by the Commission on Accrediting of  ATS , the Association of Theological Schools.
  • All of our School of Education initial and advanced licensure programs are accredited by the  Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation ( CAEP ) .
  • Liberty University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music ( NASM ).
  • The baccalaureate degree program in nursing, master’s degree program in nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice program, and the postgraduate APRN certificate program at Liberty University School of Nursing are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org).

How many years is a doctoral degree?

One question you likely have as you research doctoral programs is “How long does it take to get a doctoral degree?” That depends on the exact program you choose. Our shortest doctoral program is the Doctor of Ministry (DMin), which only has 30 credit hours, and our longest doctorate is the DNP in Family Nurse Practitioner at 78 credit hours. Additionally, our postgraduate programs (the EdS and ThM) are 30 credit hours long.

In general, our online doctoral programs can be completed in 2-3 years while our postgraduate degrees can take as little as 1 year. You can also potentially transfer in up to 50% of your postgraduate or doctoral credits — so you can finish your degree even faster! Our carefully planned, suggested course sequences can help you maximize your time and keep your total tuition costs down while ensuring that you get the most out of your classes.

What types of doctoral degrees are available?

We offer 3 main types of degrees at the doctoral level. Each is designed to help you gain the knowledge and skills that are most applicable to your career goals. Below you’ll find a list of these degrees and what they can offer you!

Postgraduate degrees  – Our Education Specialist (EdS) and Master of Theology (ThM) degrees are postgraduate programs, which means they are a step above a master’s and a step below a doctorate. These programs require a completed master’s degree for admission and are a great option if you’re not ready to pursue a full doctoral program.

In some cases, you may find that a postgraduate program provides the training and skills you need to pursue your career goals without requiring you to complete a full doctorate. Our postgraduate degrees can also set you on the fast track to acquiring new expertise while equipping you to pursue a doctoral degree later on down the road.

Professional doctorates  – We offer a wide variety of professional doctorates in many different subject areas — including business, government, divinity, nursing, and music. A professional doctorate is designed for working professionals who want to solve real-world problems in their field and gain new knowledge and skills that are directly applicable to their industry.

Professional doctoral programs still provide training in advanced research methods, but the focus is on how this research can be used to address practical challenges in a variety of settings. Some of the degrees that fall under this category include the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), Doctor of Strategic Leadership (DSL), Doctor of Law and Policy (DLP), Doctor of Public Administration (DPA), Doctor of Ministry (DMin), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and Doctor of Worship Studies (DWS).

Research/academic doctorates  – If you’re interested in a career as a researcher or university professor, an academic doctorate may be the best path forward for you. PhDs typically fall under this category. These research-focused, theory-based degrees are ideal for those seeking roles in the world of academia. By completing an academic doctorate, you’ll have the chance to contribute to high-level scholarship, address gaps in the current literature, and add to the existing body of research in your field. Liberty offers PhDs in a wide range of subjects, including education, criminal justice, heath sciences, Bible exposition, communication, history, psychology, and more!

What if I’m not ready to pursue a full doctoral degree?

Maybe you want to take doctoral-level courses but don’t yet have time to complete a full degree. If so, we have just what you need! We offer a variety of Executive Certificates that are only 21 credit hours long. Each certificate can stand on its own as a professional development credential while also helping you build credit toward a doctoral degree. You can roll your certificate credits into the corresponding doctorate, allowing you to start a full doctoral degree whenever you’re ready.

If you’re a military student, our Executive Certificates are an especially great option for you. When you pursue an Executive Certificate, you can receive our discounted  $300/credit hour  military rate both during the certificate and later during a doctoral degree.*

Check out a list of our  available Executive Certificates  to find the best program for you!

*In order to retain the $300/credit hour rate, the doctoral degree must be started within 2 years of completing the Executive Certificate.

Do online diplomas say “online”?

No — our diplomas do not indicate whether a degree was completed online or on campus. When you complete an online doctoral program, your diploma will simply state that you earned your degree from Liberty University. This helps emphasize the fact that our online programs hold the same credibility and value as our residential programs. By earning an online degree, you’ll have the flexibility to complete your coursework on your schedule while experiencing the same rigor as you would in a traditional, on-campus doctorate.

Additionally, when you graduate from a doctoral program online at Liberty, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in our  Commencement  ceremony and degree presentation ceremonies. That way, you can visit our campus and walk with the rest of your class as you receive your diploma!
