The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

Everyone has faced obstacles of some kind: a struggle with health, a failed personal project, or a financial hardship. This prompt is relevant to most people applying to college – which isn’t a bad thing. 

The most important part of writing a personal statement is to show admissions committees how you think about the world and respond to challenges rather than to come up with an entirely new angle or topic. That being said, you probably should not write about a time that you received a bad grade or lost a sports game. Those narratives are overdone and won’t allow admissions officers to get insight into your unique perspective.

What colleges want to see is your ability to be mature, resilient, and thoughtful; they want evidence that you are able to handle the independence and challenges of college. Show the admissions committee how you faced an obstacle, but responded with a creative and dignified solution instead of giving up. Be vulnerable – show your insecurity, regret, and fears. Finally, as indicated in the prompt, describe what you learned and the experience’s permanent significance. If you can’t think of such an impact, you probably shouldn’t be writing your personal statement about the situation. Remember, your personal statement is like your introduction – make sure you’re telling them an important story! 

The linearity of this prompt allows you to follow a pretty straightforward outline for your essay: context, obstacle, reaction, result. Putting these parts together, you’ll have a well constructed personal essay! Below, CollegeVine breaks down a finalized version of a real essay that we worked on with a student who addressed this prompt. 

Make Sure to Establish Enough Context

Outline the situation leading up to the event.  Make sure you hit the basics: who, what, where, why? It is also important to note whatever your pre-state was.

For example, the author of the sample essay overcame his fear of public speaking to pay tribute to a beloved coach. This triumph would have been much less meaningful had he not outlined his fear earlier in the essay. You need to give the admissions committee enough detail to understand how you evolved.

“Getting beat is one thing – it’s part of competing – but I want no part in losing.” Coach Rob Stark’s motto never fails to remind me of his encouragement on early-morning bus rides to track meets around the state. I’ve always appreciated the phrase, but an experience last June helped me understand its more profound, universal meaning.

Stark, as we affectionately call him, has coached track at my high school for 25 years. His care, dedication, and emphasis on developing good character has left an enduring impact on me and hundreds of other students. Not only did he help me discover my talent and love for running, but he also taught me the importance of commitment and discipline and to approach every endeavor with the passion and intensity that I bring to running. When I learned a neighboring high school had dedicated their track to a longtime coach, I felt that Stark deserved similar honors.

Here, the author describes why he was so fond of his coach as well as his desire to dedicate the school track to Stark. He hits the who (Coach Stark), what (desire to dedicate the track in Stark’s honor), where (high school), and why (the important lessons that Stark has imparted). 

The author also hints at his future personal development – “to approach every endeavor with the passion and intensity that I bring to running.” He also implies that he will fail to meet his original goal in the opening quote, “ getting beat is one thing – it’s part of competing – but I want no part in losing.” Hinting at the lesson you will eventually learn is an effective strategy. It allows to admissions committees to read your personal statement with the final lesson in mind, making the essay simpler to follow and priming the reader so that your conclusion is easy to understand.

The author comes across as caring by wishing to dedicate the track to his coach, thoughtful in the way he is aware of the impact that Stark has had on him, and driven in his ability to identify and pursue a selfless project. These qualities will appeal to a college admissions committee which wishes to build an intellectual and kind community on campus.

Clearly Define the Obstacle

Who or what got in your way? To what extent were you responsible for the obstacle?

Our school district’s board of education indicated they would only dedicate our track to Stark if I could demonstrate that he was extraordinary. I took charge and mobilized my teammates to distribute petitions, reach out to alumni, and compile statistics on the many team and individual champions Stark had coached over the years. We received astounding support, collecting almost 3,000 signatures and pages of endorsements from across the community. With help from my teammates, I presented this evidence to the board.

They didn’t bite.

Here, the author makes it clear that he came up with a plan in which he felt confident. The author does a good job of showing, rather than telling, the ways in which he addressed the issue at hand. Instead of saying he put together a plan, the author lists individual efforts that he took, which allows the reader a fuller understanding of the lengths to which he went. This is crucial as it gives the admissions committee better insight into the way in which the author approaches lofty goals; he uses many approaches (petitions, alumni testimonies, and statistics) to support his argument. 

The short and separated sentence – “ They didn’t bite.” – comes as a contrast to the long list of preparations that the author had organized. It implies that the board was both curt and absolute in their rejection of his plan. Here, we learn of the real obstacle – and lesson – that the essay focuses on: the importance of not giving up. The message of the opening line of the essay – “G etting beat is one thing – it’s part of competing – but I want no part in losing,” – is relevant here. The author experienced initial failure, but isn’t passively accepting a loss just yet. In the next paragraph, the author describes how he tried to persuade the school board a second time. 

Go In-depth About Your Reaction

This is the most important part. Colleges want to know how you think about things or handle stressful situations!

Did you make a plan? Collaborate with teammates? Have an open conversation with your parents? How did you work around the challenge? It is important to also describe your emotional response; were you hurt, invigorated, sad, angry, surprised? In what ways did you handle this emotion? Was your response mature? What was your first (emotional) response? How did your thoughts or feelings change over time? Finally, what plan did you make?

Most members argued that dedicating the track was a low priority. Knowing that we had to act quickly to convince them of its importance, I called a team meeting where we drafted a rebuttal for the next board meeting. To my surprise, they chose me to deliver it. I was far from the best public speaker in the group, and I felt nervous about going before the unsympathetic board again. However, at that second meeting, I discovered that I enjoy articulating and arguing for something that I’m passionate about.

Public speaking resembles a cross country race. Walking to the starting line, you have to trust your training and quell your last minute doubts. When the gun fires, you can’t think too hard about anything; your performance has to be instinctual, natural, even relaxed. At the next board meeting, the podium was my starting line. As I walked up to it, familiar butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Instead of the track stretching out in front of me, I faced the vast audience of teachers, board members, and my teammates. I felt my adrenaline build, and reassured myself: I’ve put in the work, my argument is powerful and sound. As the board president told me to introduce myself, I heard, “runners set” in the back of my mind. She finished speaking, and Bang! The brief silence was the gunshot for me to begin.  

In this section, the author shows the admissions committee how resilient he is by organizing a rebuttal to the board’s initial ruling. The detail about being selected by his team to present is also crucial; it shows that he has been identified by his peers as a leader. 

Moreover, his hesitation to present (his pre-state) is essential to the later connection he makes between running and speaking publicly with ease. He handles a negative emotion (nervousness) with ease and maturity, reframing it as an opportunity to be a powerful speaker and sound orator. Crucially, the author doesn’t just tell us that he’s nervous, but brings us into the physical and psychological experience.

This detailed description allows the reader to empathize with the author; we have all experienced nervousness and know how difficult it can be to overcome, and the author allows the reader to mentally enter an anxious state. Putting the reader into your emotional experience (here, being anxious) makes whatever reaction you have (here, speaking well in front of a group of people) seem more impressive. Instead of simply telling us that he spoke in front of the board, the author brings us into the room with him to highlight his accomplishments!

The author also makes a connection to overcoming his fear of public speaking to performing well under pressure at track meets. In this way, the author is able to connect all of the valuable life skills that track taught him without doing so in a cliche or contrived fashion. This connection is creative and ties the narrative back in with the essay’s broader themes. It shows the admissions committee that the author is capable of understanding how and why he behaves the way he does, which is a sign of maturity. Colleges are more interested in how you think about the things you do than they are interested in the things you do. 

Colleges want to see that you have an optimistic and opportunistic approach to obstacles. People generally like people who are positive, which the author certainly comes across as here. Instead of being shut down by a challenge, show admissions committees how you used it to fuel your fire!

Discuss the End Result

Talk about to what degree your efforts were successful. Even if you didn’t meet your original goal, what did you learn? Importantly, how are you applying these lessons now?

The next few minutes blurred together, but when the dust settled, I knew from the board members’ expressions and the audience’s thunderous approval that I had run quite a race. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough; the board voted down our proposal. I was disappointed, but proud of myself, my team, and our collaboration off the track. We stood up for a cause we believed in, and I overcame my worries about being a leader. Although I discovered that changing the status quo through an elected body can be a painstakingly difficult process and requires perseverance, I learned that I enjoy the challenges this effort offers. Last month, one of the school board members joked that I had become a “regular” – I now often show up to meetings to advocate for a variety of causes, including better environmental practices in cafeterias and safer equipment for athletes.

Just as Stark taught me, I worked passionately to achieve my goal. I may have been beaten when I appealed to the board, but I certainly didn’t lose, and that would have made Stark proud.

Despite being disappointed in his failure to meet his original goal, the author responds positively: proud of his and his teammates’ hard work. 

The author also addresses his post-state by answering the last question of the prompt (how the obstacle affected you and what you learned from the experience). In this example, the author’s post-state is uncovering a passion for advocacy and evolving into a more confident leader. He outlines specifically the way in which he learned to stand up for the causes he believes in and overcame his fears of public speaking and leadership. 

Importantly, the author’s resiliency is embodied by not being dissuaded by his first unsuccessful attempt to make a change. He shows that he is applying the lessons he learned “to advocate for a variety of causes, including better environmental practices in cafeterias and safer equipment.” This hint at his other interests, environmental and safety policies, encourages the admissions committee to learn more. Ideally, the author’s mention of these interests should be backed up in his activity list – perhaps, for example, through involvement with his school’s Sustainability Club or recent recycling initiative. 

Finally, the author pays respect to the man who first inspired him. Importantly, this essay allows the author to explore all that he learned by being an athlete without writing a cliche essay on the topic.

Striking Out

I've played baseball ever since I could remember, but somehow, at fourteen, I still wasn't very good at it. You'd think that ten years of summer leagues and two older brothers who'd been the stars of their teams would have rubbed off on me, but you'd be wrong. I mean, I wasn't completely hopeless. I was pretty fast, and I could hit my oldest brother's fastball maybe three or four times out of ten, but I wasn't about to be scouted for college teams.

My team that summer, the Bengals, wasn't anything special, either. We had one or two pretty talented guys, but most, like me, were just barely what you could call decent. But somehow we'd almost scraped through the first round of playoffs, with only one game standing between us and semifinals. Predictably, the game had come down to the last inning, the Bengals had two outs and players on second and third base, and it was my turn at bat. It was like one of those moments you see in movies. The scrawny kid who no one really believed in hits a miraculous home run, winning the big game for his underdog team and becoming a local legend. Except my life wasn't The Sandlot , and any hopes my teammates or coach might've had for a last-minute rally to victory were crushed with my third swing-and-miss when the umpire sent me back to the dugout with a "strike three - you're out!"

I was inconsolably angry with myself. I spent the entire car ride home tuning out my parents' words of consolation, replaying my strike-out over and over in my head. For the next few days I was miserable thinking about how, if it hadn't been for me, the Bengals might have been on their way to a league victory, and nothing anyone said could convince me that the loss wasn't on my shoulders.

About a week later, some of my friends from the team got together at the park to hang out. When I arrived, I was a little surprised that no one seemed to be mad at me - after all, I'd lost us the game, and they had to be disappointed about not making it to the semifinals. It wasn't until we split into teams for an impromptu pickup game that I started to realize why no one was upset. Maybe it was the excitement of reaching the playoffs or the pressure of living up to my brothers' examples, but sometime during that game, I'd lost sight of why most of us played summer league baseball. It wasn't to win the championship, as cool as that would have been. It was because we all loved to play. I didn't need a trophy or a Hollywood come-from-behind win to have fun playing baseball with my friends, but maybe I needed to strike out to remember that.

A Critique of Richard's Essay

A lot can be learned from Richard's writing by looking at all of its pieces. By thinking objectively about another person's essay, you will be better off when it comes time to write your own because you will understand what admissions officers are looking for.

"Striking Out" isn't an overly clever title, but it gets the job done. It tells you that you are about to read an essay about failure and baseball. A good title  summarizes an essay and intrigues its readers but focus more on an appropriate title than on an interesting one.

Language and Tone

Richard leans into informal language such as "I mean" and "you'd think" to make his essay conversational and friendly. He introduces himself as an unimpressive athlete who doesn't quite measure up to his brothers, this humility making him more relatable to his readers. While this level of informality is not preferred by all colleges, most are looking to learn as much about your personality as possible. Richard's easy tone accomplishes this.

The language of the essay is also tight and engaging. Each sentence gets a point across and Richard is economical with his use of words to clearly convey the setting and situation. College admissions officers are likely to appreciate the overall clarity and meticulousness of Richard's essay.

Richard establishes and maintains a self-deprecating and humble voice throughout his writing His willingness to be honest about his shortcomings shows that he is sure of himself and also tells colleges that he has a healthy self-concept and isn't afraid of failing. By not boasting about athletic prowess, Richard demonstrates a valuable quality of self-assuredness that colleges admire.

College admissions officers read many essays about sports, especially from applicants that are more interested in playing sports at college than getting an education. Self-congratulatory essays have the effect of distancing you from the authentic qualities of successful college students and are therefore never a good idea.

Richard's essay has nothing to do with heroism. He is not claiming to be a star or over-inflating his abilities and his honesty is refreshing. His essay perfectly satisfies every aspect of the prompt by presenting a clear moment of failure and a significant lesson learned without blowing his accomplishments out of proportion. He managed to take the cliché topic of sports and turn it on its head, which admissions officers are much more likely to respect.

Richard's essay would be appropriate in most but not all situations. If he were hoping to play a sport competitively for a college, this would be the wrong essay. It would not impress NCAA scouts or make him likely to be recruited. This essay would be best for universities more interested in his personality than his baseball skills. Any college looking for mature, self-aware applicants with affable personalities would be drawn to Richard's story of failure.

A Final Word

Always keep in mind that the purpose of the Common Application essay is for colleges to learn who you are. While grades  and test scores will be considered, admissions offices will also be using more subjective and  holistic  information about what you are like as a person. Richard succeeds in making a good impression by being a strong and engaging writer with a positive sense of self. Most would agree that he seems like the type of student who would be a useful addition to the campus community.

Three Ways Writing About Obstacles Strengthens Your Application Essays

Applicants love to write about their accomplishments, whether in a personal statement for graduate school or in a b-school essay that asks about one’s greatest achievement, challenge, or the like. And they are not shy about sharing their accomplishments, such as driving innovations that led to revenue boosts for their firm, conducting original and meaningful research in their field of study, or leading a volunteer group on a community service initiative. 

As genuine and significant as these accomplishments are, many initial essay drafts are often missing a key element: obstacles . In this blog post, we explain why you shouldn’t shy away from discussing obstacles in your essays and how doing so intelligently can help your candidacy.

Here are three ways that discussing obstacles enhances your application:

1. Sharing how you overcame an obstacle shows the adcom that you can navigate bumps in the road in a positive, proactive way.

All of us frequently encounter obstacles: the traffic detour, an incompetent customer service representative, a disagreement with your partner, the approval you expected on a project unexpectedly turning into a “No.”  Every single person faces challenges, but people deal with them in wildly varying ways. Those who are more successful in life succeed because they understand that obstacles are to be expected. They learn how to navigate them with patience, creativity, and a problem-solving attitude, and by – to borrow a phrase – “keeping calm and carrying on.” But too often, when asked to discuss their accomplishments, applicants selectively and completely forget the things that got in their way  en route to their achievement. When they experience this kind of amnesia, they are shortchanging themselves. Triumphing over the hurdles they encountered might well have been just as difficult as executing all the anticipated elements of their plans – and therefore worth sharing.

2. Details about how you overcame obstacles create an appealing image of you as a candidate with a can-do personality.

Look at the following examples and see if you don’t agree. First we have the “stop-putting-me-to-sleep” example : As the leader of my product research group, I came up with a plan for a new widget that would save us 10% in costs. After I communicated my vision to the team, we worked hard for four weeks on a prototype, completing it by the deadline, to the delight of management. Today, my widget is still the standard for my company, saving us over $300K annually. Okay, this sounds like a solid accomplishment, but it’s hardly memorable.  How  did the candidate communicate her vision? What specific example does she offer of the hard work that was done over four weeks on the prototype? We have absolutely no idea.  Now let’s look at a “dazzle-is-in-the-details” example : As the leader of my product research group, I came up with a plan for a new widget that would save us 10% in costs. But when I explained my vision to the team, two senior engineers immediately argued against it, saying that there were key flaws in the design. After revisiting my design and realizing that they were correct, I revised my plan and was able to eliminate the flaws. We worked on a prototype for two weeks before discovering that the cost of the material we had planned to use for it had increased by more than 30% in recent months. I worked many late nights that week researching alternative materials, before finding one that was both appropriate and cost-effective. By the skin of our teeth, we met our four-week deadline and presented the prototype to management, but the VP of Manufacturing argued that we would need to purchase major new equipment to produce the widget. I convinced the team to work overtime on a manufacturing proposal that proved we could craft the product with existing equipment. Today, my widget is still the standard for my company, saving us over $300K annually. There’s no contest here, is there? The second example, loaded with specifics about what went wrong and what almost derailed the project, is mighty impressive. The details highlight the applicant’s creativity, thoroughness, tenacity, communication skills, and leadership potential. When spelled out this way, discussing an obstacle can make your essays shine with the drama of the story and can  associate you with lively elements and images . For example, in the second example, it’s easy to visualize the two dissenting engineers, the surprise of discovering the price hike for the materials, and the VP’s frown. In the first, there’s only the haziest impression of an employee smiling about a job well done.

3. Discussing obstacles makes you a more fully developed, more relatable applicant.

Can you see through these examples how including specific, key obstacles in your essays and explaining how you negotiated them  showcases your ability to overcome the unexpected ? This will assure the adcoms that you can capably execute a well-defined plan – even when you face unexpected bumps in the road. Moreover, it shows the school how you spring into action when the chips are down. This adds to a fuller understanding of who you are as an individual – and as an applicant the school would like to have in its next class.

One concept I always have difficulty wrapping my head around is fear of success. Why would people be afraid of success? Fear of failure makes a lot more sense, failure can be scary, but success? What’s so scary about success?

Success is a desirable outcome across all domains of life, including business, sports, career , academics, and personal life. We want to be successful. Others want us to be successful. But is there such a thing as too much success? Is there a level of success that we would rather not achieve out of fear?

Psychologists say yes. There is a very specific form of fear related to success. And like the fear of failure , this is a complex fear with multiple facets. Studied extensively in the context of athletic performance, the fear of success consists of five themes (Ogilvie, 1968): (a) social and emotional isolation; (b) guilty feelings about self-assertion; (c) fear of realizing one’s true potential; (d) worry about surpassing in performance an admired other; and (e) pressure to maintain good performance and continue to impress.

With success comes responsibility. And with more responsibility comes more pressure. Success also means more work. There are more demands, more expectations, more things to learn, more obstacles to deal with, and less time to enjoy other things in life. The risk of failure increases, and the consequences of failure may be more severe. Underperforming could be much more distressing to a valedictorian than to an average student. Being successful also means you are more visible, and therefore an easier target for scrutiny and criticism. More people care about how the gold medalist from last year will do this year than about the athlete who didn’t make it to the top. More attention is brought to the performance of a company’s CEO than to the performance of the hundreds or thousands of their employees.

While fear of success was first mentioned in the psychoanalytic literature, you don’t have to go to psychoanalysis to deal with it! There are many more options to leverage fear of success and prevent it from becoming an unnecessary obstacle to your growth and achievement. Here are a few ideas.

1. Welcome the responsibility that comes with success.

In many contexts, added responsibility is a sign of competence and good performance. At work, promotions invariably translate into more responsibility: managing more people, being in charge of bigger accounts, or assuming a more active role in the growth of the organization. Michael Port, author of Book Yourself Solid , says that often success, in all aspects of life, depends on how much responsibility we can handle at any given time. The added responsibilities are a token of your competence. They are affirmation that you have done the work and earned the trust. Instead of avoiding success, learning how to handle the increased responsibility can pave the way for more successes.

2. Remind yourself that it’s not that lonely at the top.

One of the themes that emerges in the fear of success literature is the social isolation that may follow success. You often hear people say that it’s lonely at the top. But this adage is neither an absolute truth, nor does it imply that you are safe from feeling lonely if you are at the bottom or in the middle. Successful people are surrounded by other people who want to learn from them, to be mentored by them, to help them with their mission, or to benefit from the relationship. Undoubtedly, the amount of work required to reach and maintain a certain level of success is considerable, but that doesn’t mean that your social life will become extinct. High achievers are as social and as popular as anyone else. All it takes to stay connected with the people in your life while working toward achieving your goals is discipline and good planning, qualities which are requisites for any kind of success anyway.

3. Prioritize your own priorities.

With success comes the pressure to continue to be successful. If you are a good student, for example, you are expected to get into a great school, to choose a highly respected profession, to build a successful career, to make a lot of money, to marry well, to have a trouble-free family life, and to never suffer from depression . What will people think if you break the chain? Reaching high levels of performance in any life domain does not obligate you to continue to outperform yourself, whether for self-validation or for continuous approval from others. Priorities in life change, and while you may have worked hard to achieve something, you are at liberty to rest in your laurels or even shift gears entirely. Many people, for example, forego a successful career choosing to be a stay-at-home parent, because this is what they prioritize at this point in their lives. Consider what your priorities are, instead of trying to fulfill an imaginary contract you signed with society to continue to beat your own record.

4. Stay focused on the benefits.

The long-term benefits of success outweigh the short-term costs. More responsibility could translate into more control, autonomy, freedom, recognition, and, joy, a higher salary, or even a better parking spot at work! Being able to reach your goals could also help build more confidence so that you can continue to pursue higher levels of performance. Think of success like an intense workout, which may seem painful just before you start working out, but you know that the long-term benefits for your health and fitness will outlast that brief moment of dread of having to go through with it each time. In fact, the emotional cost of not achieving your goals may be higher than the pressure of having to live up to your new reputation and having to work hard to maintain your new performance standards.

5. Remind yourself that progress is not linear.

Progress in life is not a perfectly linear process. There will be ups and downs in your performance. You most likely will not break your own record each time you run a race. You may not become a best-selling author with each book you write. You may not get as many views on your blog post as you did last time. Daniel Kahneman, in his book Thinking Fast and Slow, refers to regression to the mean to explain why there are fluctuations in our performance. Our efforts and the results we obtain are not perfectly correlated, which is why our performance will be inconsistent from instance to instance, but will hover around the same level on average. Therefore, if you had a moment of great success, do not be discouraged if the next moment is not as stellar, because statistically it couldn’t be. Progress, on the other hand, means raising the mean little by little over time. Therefore, go for the big results, and don’t fret the small setbacks. They are inherent in the process.

6. Give credit where credit is due.

If you worry that your high achievements may outshine the people who had once been your teachers, your mentors, your coaches, or your idols, make it known to them how inspiring they have been and show them gratitude for what you have learned from them. Don’t shy away from making proper attributions and acknowledging the people who helped you along the way. In most cases, it will fill them with pride. And if there are a few who, despite your acknowledgments, feel resentful that your record of achievement is now more impressive than theirs, remind yourself that this is their problem to deal with, not yours.

7. Do not define yourself by the outcome.

Lastly, and most importantly, the pressure increases when we care more about the outcome than the effort. Sometimes, the drive for achievement can be so powerful that it becomes inseparable from our self-worth . In this case, the pressure to succeed is high, and success becomes self-defining. People who divide the world into winners and losers enjoy the victory more than the game, they may avoid taking on challenges without guarantees of success, and they become harsher critics of themselves and others. Success, however, is not a means to protect the ego. You do not need to win to be a good person. But if you want to be successful, you need to know how to play a good game, because effort determines the outcome. And as long as you focus on the effort, you can have more control over the outcome, learn more about yourself, and lessen the pressure that comes with the need to succeed.

Here is the question I want to leave you with. I mentioned in the beginning that I have a hard time wrapping my head around the concept of fear of success. What do you think is happening here? Are we afraid of success, or are we worried that we will be unable to sustain it, and that we will become one-hit wonders? In other words, do you think that fear of success is a real fear, or is it a masked version of fear of failure?

“Disability need not be an obstacle to success,” Stephen Hawking wrote in the first ever world disability report back in 2011. As one of the most influential scientists of modern times, the wheelchair-bound physicist is certainly proof of that.

So why then are public attitudes so far from the reality? Almost 40% of respondents in a survey in Britain said that disabled people aren’t as productive as others. In the same survey, a quarter of disabled people said people expected less of them because of their disability.

It is these sorts of attitudes, rather than any mental or physical impairment, that create barriers for people with disabilities. As these leaders from the world of sports, culture and business show, it’s about time we changed those outdated beliefs.

“I went blind at 22. From an athlete, I became a young man with a white cane, unsure how to live my life,” Mark Pollock, a Forum Young Global Leader explains. But very soon, he found a deeper purpose in life, and realized his disability didn’t have to stop him from achieving great things.

“I began to race in deserts, mountains, across oceans, and on the 10th anniversary of going blind, I raced over 43 days to the South Pole.”

But in 2010, an accident left him paralyzed, and once again his world changed overnight: “My new life was shattered.”

He had a choice: to let his disability define him for the rest of his life, or to continue fighting. There was only ever one way it was going to go.

“If I just sat in a wheelchair, I’d be giving up completely,” he remembers. Today, he’s working with other leaders from science, technology and communications to fund and fast-track a cure for paralysis.

Born in the US in 1880, an illness left Helen Keller both blind and deaf before her second birthday. While the services available to people with disabilities were less extensive than they are today, Keller’s mother sought out experts and ensured her daughter received the best education.

In 1904, Keller graduated from Radcliffe College, becoming the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor of arts. It was at university that her career as a writer and social activist started. Today, the Helen Keller archives contain almost 500 speeches and essays on topics as varied as birth control and Fascism in Europe.

She would go on to achieve international acclaim, becoming America’s first Goodwill Ambassador, and to this day she remains an inspiration to the deaf and blind .

Ralph Braun was still a young boy when he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, an incurable group of genetic diseases that leads to a loss of muscle mass.

A few years after his diagnosis, Ralph began to lose his ability to walk. While doctors warned him he would never be able to lead an independent life, the young boy was already proving people wrong, building the first battery-powered scooter. His passion would eventually lead him to establish wheelchair manufacturer BraunAbility.

He died in 2013, but as his company’s website notes, his legacy lives on. “Necessity is the mother of invention, and Ralph’s physical limitations only served to fuel his determination to live independently and prove to society that people with physical disabilities can participate fully and actively in life.”

Mexico’s most famous artist was born with spina bifida, a condition that can cause defects in the spinal cord. At six, she contracted polio, which left one leg much thinner than the other.

In spite of these challenges, she was an active child, but at 18 a bus accident left her with serious injuries. It was while recovering from the accident that Frida discovered her love of painting. She would go on to be one of the most famous Surrealists in the world.

For much of the past two years, Caitlin Clark has been the centerpiece of the college basketball world.

Now Clark, like NBA Hall of Famer Larry Bird was 45 years ago, is involuntarily the focus of discussions about race and her transition to professional basketball . Though Clark hasn’t said anything to fuel the Black-white narrative surrounding her meteoric rise, talks about a double standard are being had.

“I think it’s a huge thing. I think a lot of people may say it’s not about Black and white, but to me, it is,” Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson said when asked about the race element in Clark’s popularity and before she recently signed two major endorsement deals . “It really is because you can be top notch at what you are as a Black woman, but yet maybe that’s something that people don’t want to see.

“They don’t see it as marketable, so it doesn’t matter how hard I work. It doesn’t matter what we all do as Black women, we’re still going to be swept underneath the rug. That’s why it boils my blood when people say it’s not about race because it is.”

To be clear, Clark is a skilled hardcourt savant from Iowa. Bird was a skilled hardcourt savant from Indiana State. And like Bird, Clark has captivated audiences and brought unmatched attention to women’s basketball with an ability to score from every corner of the court.

Neither Bird nor Clark were the first great white male or female pro basketball players. Jerry West is the actual NBA logo and before Clark, the long list of talented white WNBA players included Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart.

But sports can be elevated by a heated rivalry, particularly when race is involved.

Clark’s rise has come with an on-court bravado that made her must-watch TV as she led the Hawkeyes to back-to-back NCAA championship game appearances. When Bird led the Sycamores to the title game in 1979, he squared off against Magic Johnson in one of the most-watched games in NCAA tourney history.

At Iowa, Clark’s on-court rival in the NCAA Tournament was former LSU star Angel Reese . Then she took on women’s juggernaut South Carolina and coach Dawn Staley. The matchups created the kind of made-for-social media moments that captivated audiences, regardless of gender.

The matchups also led to ongoing discussions about how race plays a factor in the treatment afforded to Clark, a white woman from “America’s Heartland,” as compared to Black counterparts like Reese.

Clark has said she and Reese are just pieces of a larger movement.

“I would say me and Angel have always been great competitors,” Clark said prior to Iowa’s Elite Eight matchup with Reese and LSU in March. “I think Angel would say the same, like it’s not just us in women’s basketball. That’s not the only competitive thing about where our game is at, and that’s what makes it so good. We need multiple people to be really good.”

Still, the race-based debate over perceived slights to Black players or favoritism toward Clark is not going away as the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft prepares for her first regular-season game on Tuesday night when Indiana plays Connecticut.

“I think new fans, or maybe returning fans to women’s college basketball, have been drawn in. In part because of Clark. But also, you know, because of the LSU-Iowa rivalry,” said Victoria Jackson, a sports historian and clinical associate professor of history at Arizona State University.

“There are basketball reasons,” Jackson said, “but also there are racial reasons for why Clark has been able to kind of break off into a completely different stratosphere from players that came before her.”

Because of the perceived double-standard, nearly everything involving Clark gets questioned:

— Clark’s first preseason game was streamed , but Reese’s was not.

— Clark gets an endorsement deal. Other established Black stars not so much.

— If Reese talks trash , it’s viewed as unsportsmanlike. If Clark does it, she’s being competitive.

— Reese received some backlash for going to the Met Gala before a game, raising questions would there have been same type of scrutiny if Clark had graced the red carpet.

Wilson, who signed with Gatorade last week and announced Saturday that she is getting a Nike signature shoe, and others have cited how companies are clamoring to be in business with Clark as an example of the disparity in how players are treated.

The deal Clark struck with Nike will reportedly pay her $28 million over eight years — making it the richest sponsorship contract for a women’s basketball player, and it includes a signature shoe. Before Wilson’s announcement Saturday, the only other active players in the WNBA with a signature shoe were Elena Delle Donne, Sabrina Ionescu and Stewart – who are all white.

The perception extends beyond endorsements.

While Clark’s preseason debut was available on the WNBA League Pass streaming app, a post on the X platform from the WNBA incorrectly stated that all games , including the debut of Reese and fellow rookie former South Carolina standout Kamilla Cardoso for the Chicago Sky, would also be available.

So, a fan in attendance at the Sky’s game livestreamed it. It received more than 620,000 views.

In an apology post explaining why the Sky’s game wasn’t also available, the WNBA said Clark’s game was available as part of a limited free preview of its streaming app.

There also have been racial components to how Clark is treated on social media as compared to others, most notably Reese.

Reese, who has previously spoken about the vitriol she received online, was recently attacked again after she missed a preseason practice to attend the Met Gala. Clark also has been the target of online criticism, but apparently not to the extent that Reese has been.

Online hate-speech accounts for approximately 1 percent of all social media posts in the context of sports, according to Daniel Kilvington, course director in Media & Cultural Studies at Leeds Beckett University in Leeds, England.

“Although this might sound quite low, consider how much traffic is online and how many posts are made every single day,” said Kilvington, whose work with the Tackling Online Hate in Football research group has looked at the issue through the sport of soccer. “One percent is therefore 1% too high as athletes are primary targets of hate-speech, harassment and death threats simply for playing a game they love.”

But as Clark’s popularity grows, so will the debate. Jackson believes it’s a good time to openly have discussions about it.

“I don’t know how many times I read and heard her described as generational talent,” the ASU professor said. “And whenever we’re making those cases, I immediately think, well, who are the other generational talents we’ve had? And, I think too often the athletes could be placed in that category who have been Black women have not had that sort of gushing attention. And especially the kind of general public, crossover saturation that Caitlin Clark has had.

“There are overlapping, intersecting reasons for why that is. But, I think we can’t not think about it if the goal here is to have equitable treatment of the athletes in the sport.”

What we learned in Caitlin Clark’s WNBA debut: 3 takeaways

Playing in front of a packed and loud crowd was nothing new for Caitlin Clark , who made her WNBA debut in a 92-71 loss to the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena on Tuesday.

The competition, however, was another story.

Clark re-entered the game in the fourth quarter, with her Indiana Fever trailing by double digits. If the first three periods hadn’t been trying enough, a new challenge awaited Clark: five-time WNBA All-Defensive selection Alyssa Thomas was about to pick her up on the perimeter.

Clark attempted to create some space from Thomas but couldn’t shake her, ultimately giving up the ball to Aliyah Boston in the lane with a few ticks left on the shot clock. Boston couldn’t create a look quick enough, and the Fever committed a turnover, their 21st of the game.

It was that kind of opener for Indiana, as its heavily hyped offense was stifled by the veteran Sun. The Fever gave away the ball 25 times and took 16 fewer shots than Connecticut, delaying Clark’s first WNBA win for at least one more game.

Clark posted 20 points on 5-of-15 shooting and hit four 3s on 11 attempts. She was held scoreless in the first quarter before getting the first points of her professional career — a layup with 5:23 left in the second quarter. Clark hit her first career 3 on the left wing, where she made more 3s from last season at Iowa than at any other spot on the court.

She had 10 turnovers, the most in WNBA history for a player in a first game.

How have top WNBA picks fared in their debuts?

Here’s what we learned from her first regular-season contest.

Struggles against Sun’s aggressive defense

The Sun tasked 5-foot-11 DiJonai Carrington with being Clark’s primary defender, and the fourth-year guard closed off Clark’s air space with aplomb. Clark couldn’t lose her on screens on the perimeter or blow by her into the paint. Carrington also took the ball away from Clark on a loose dribble, going coast-to-coast for the transition layup.

It was an outstanding effort from Carrington, who made just the fourth start of her WNBA career. She has historically been a spark plug off the bench.

But it wasn’t just Carrington; Connecticut’s total team defense targeted Clark, the head of the snake. The Sun hedged on screens, sending two to the ball and swarming Clark on the perimeter, which caused her to cough it up on multiple occasions.

The size of Connecticut’s frontcourt players, with 6-4 DeWanna Bonner as the small forward, made it particularly challenging for Clark to find an outlet out of those traps.

Furthermore, Indiana’s spacing wasn’t good enough for the Fever to reset the offense on those possessions. Indiana tried to make things easier for Clark in the second half by setting screens closer to the basket, so even when Clark was pushed back, she was still in shooting range.

Even so, the No. 1 draft pick committed those 10 turnovers in her debut, registering an ignominious double-double. Whether Clark was trying to escape the trap or lob the ball into the paint, the Sun were prepared for her ball movement.

Clark had more success playing off the ball as her first two 3s came on catch-and-shoot attempts off screens. With Kelsey Mitchell on a minutes restriction, Indiana had fewer opportunities for someone else run the offense, so Mitchell returning to full health will allow Clark to play at the two more often.

Clark was also good on switches, but didn’t see those very often in Connecticut’s scheme.

Can’t always shoot out of slumps

At Iowa, Clark was so completely in charge of the offense that she could keep shooting when she played poorly to eventually get herself in rhythm. With so many mouths to feed on the Fever roster, Clark couldn’t hijack possessions and didn’t really find her footing until the second half.

After missing her first four shots, Clark made five of her next eight attempts, but she isn’t yet accustomed to impacting games with a lower shot volume. Indiana has to strike a balance among its best players, a task that will become even more difficult when Mitchell is in the starting lineup.

Though Clark dominated possessions, Boston fell by the wayside, getting only six field goal attempts in her 29 minutes.

The duo that seems to be more on the same page is Clark and NaLyssa Smith , as Smith is more comfortable as a rim runner and playing at a faster pace. The pick-and-roll chemistry between Clark and Boston, the two franchise cornerstones, remains a work in progress.

Opponents will make Clark work on both ends

It wasn’t just the Sun defense that targeted Clark; Connecticut’s offense also went after her. The Sun involved her in the same twirl action in the second and third quarters to get open 3-pointers, and Indiana’s defense didn’t adjust.

On one occasion, Clark didn’t account for who she was guarding and over helped in the paint, leaving Ty Harris — the WNBA’s leading 3-point shooter by percentage in 2023 — open on the wing. Clark also got caught ball-watching on a back cut.

Thomas drew three fouls on Clark herself, as the rookie grew increasingly frustrated. On the third foul, Clark thought she had successfully gone over Thomas’ screen, but the veteran demonstrated to the referee how Clark’s arm had gotten caught on her jersey to earn the call.

Clark’s 20 points were tied for the game-high with Bonner, but her 10 turnovers far outpaced her three assists, and Indiana lost her minutes by 13 points.

There is plenty of room to grow for her and the Fever.

To what extent do anions affect the electrodeposition of zn.

Zinc metal, with its high theoretical capacity and low cost, stands out as a promising anode material for affordable high energy-density storage technologies in rechargeable batteries. However, obtaining a high level of reversibility in zinc electrodeposition, which is pivotal for the success of rechargeable zinc-metal-based batteries, remains a significant challenge. A critical factor in this regard is the physicochemical characteristics of the electrolyte solution. Previous studies have indicated that adjusting the electrolyte solutions’ composition with additives or co-solvents, along with fine-tuning concentrations and pH levels, can enhance the reversibility and kinetics of Zn deposition/stripping. However, the precise impact of Zn salts counter anions in the electrolyte solutions on these processes is not fully understood yet. Aiming to focus on the key fundamental aspects related to the electrolytes’ influences on the Zn electroplating, we delve into the impact of anions on this process. Using advanced in-situ and ex-situ analytical methods, we reveal the role of the anions in the electrolyte solutions on zinc deposition/dissolution processes. Computational simulations shed light on the electrolytes’ solvation structure, establishing a clear relationship between deposition behavior and the molecular variations specific to the different anions. These findings pave the way for new design principles aimed at optimizing the composition of electrolyte solutions for zinc metal batteries, potentially enhancing their performance and efficiency.
