Eligibility Criteria:

Usually applicants are expected to have a minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree - exceptions are possible, but these should be strongly motivated. In addition, candidates may also hold or be completing a Masters degree in a relevant subject discipline but this is not a mandatory requirement. We also encourage applicants from non-academic backgrounds with research experience in their current or previous employment to apply.

Home and International applicants (inc. EU) are welcome to apply.  Following the UKRI announcement in regards to their new 30% UKRI international recruitment policy (that will take effect from September 2021) both Newcastle University, and Northumbria University, have agreed to pay the international fee difference for all International applicants (inc. EU) who are awarded a DTP studentship.

International applicants - English Language requirements

If you have lower English Language scores, you may be accepted onto a Pre-sessional English course.

• Please identify a project that is of interest to you on our Studentship projects page.
• Once you have identified a project you can contact the named supervisor to discuss this project further before you apply. Please find further details on how to apply at the bottom of this page.
• Alternatively, you can outline your own research idea. We strongly recommend that you make contact with a ONEPlanet supervisor  or any academic colleague at either institution to discuss this idea before you apply. Please use the studentship code: OP9000 and provide the name of a suggested academic supervisor in your applcation form.
• Please note that you can only apply for 1 project within the DTP.
• If you are applying for a specific ONEPlanet research project,  you are still required to write a proposal . For guidance on writing your research proposal  please find advice here .

When you are ready to apply:

Please  submit an application to either Newcastle or Northumbria University via their Postgraduate applications portals  depending on the main supervisor of your chosen project, or your chosen main supervisor if outlining your own research idea. 

Apply to Newcastle University:  Applications are made using the Apply to Newcastle Portal .  You should create a new application then search for 'PhD One Planet', course code 8212F. Please see our  Applying to Newcastle University Guide  to take you through our online application process.

Apply to Northumbria University: Please apply via this link   and select October 2024 as your entrance date. Please enter the related studentship code (eg. OP2401 etc) into the studentship code field.

The  following documentation is required:

• Application form (Completed via the online application portal of your selected institution)
• Your 1,000-word personal statement (with your chosen project title and reference code e.g. OP23XX).  Please explain how your knowledge, skills and experience fit the project outline.
• Your 1,000-word project proposal (with project title and reference code OP23XX). If you are outlining your own research idea please use reference code OP9000
• A minimum of two references. These can be submitted with your application if they are signed, or alternatively, they can be emailed directly by the referee to  [email protected] . Please note that it is your responsibility to request these references and ensure they that are sent to us.
• Attach degree transcripts and certificates.
• If English is not your first language, a copy of your English language qualification.
• If you are outlining your own research idea, please use reference code: OP9000 We recommend that you identify a potential supervisor to represent your project before you apply.

Fees and funding

Tuition fees for 2024 entry (per year), home fees for research degree students.

For 2024-25 entry, we have aligned our standard Home research fees with those set by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) . The standard fee was confirmed in Spring 2024 by UKRI.

If your studies last longer than one year, your tuition fee may increase in line with inflation.

Depending on your residency history, if you’re a student from the EU, other EEA or a Swiss national, with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you’ll normally pay the ‘Home’ tuition fee rate and may be eligible for Student Finance England support.

EU students without settled or pre-settled status will normally be charged fees at the ‘International’ rate and will not be eligible for Student Finance England support.

Surveillance and Characterisation of Arboviruses in the Hunter Region

Phd scholarship.

Climate change has the potential to amplify the threat of mosquito-transmitted (arbovirus) diseases in Australia. This research project aims to improve mosquito surveillance methods and enhance our understanding of mosquito-borne viruses.

The emergence of SARS-COV-2 as a pandemic virus has demonstrated the need for emerging infectious diseases monitoring. Newly emerging viruses are poised to trigger future epidemics, or unpredictably change their interactions between animal vectors and humans.

Mosquito-borne arboviruses represent a significant health burden in Australia with the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System reporting increasing virus notifications across the country. Factors such as rapid urbanisation, global warming and meteorological events can create favourable conditions for the survival of mosquitoes which in turn may impact public health by promoting arbovirus transmission. This was exemplified in 2022, when Australia experienced an outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis Virus with 46 cases and 7 deaths. In 2023 there was an outbreak of Murray Valley Encephalitis with 9 cases, 3 deaths, and the first human case in Australia since 1974.

In NSW, arbovirus surveillance is carried out by the Arbovirus Surveillance and Mosquito Monitoring Program. This program operates from spring to autumn and performs molecular analysis (i.e., PCR identification of viral genomes) in sentinel chicken flocks and live mosquitos at laboratories in Sydney. However, arbovirus surveillance in the Hunter New England health district only includes Lake Macquarie to the South and Lake Cathie to the North, underscoring the necessity for localised surveillance and monitoring.

To respond to this need, this cross-College PhD project aims to

1) Investigate and improve established quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) surveillance of known arboviruses in local mosquito populations

2) Determine the types of mosquito-borne viruses present in the Hunter New England region by analysing mosquitoes captured during the 2022/2023 mosquito season

3) Characterise newly detected viruses using sequence analysis, molecular cloning techniques and cell-based virus characterisation. We anticipate collaborations across the sector including the NSW Department of Health and CSIRO.

By addressing these objectives, this project will contribute to the development of a local arbovirus monitoring platform and expand knowledge on circulating viruses to better understand the impact on public health.

PhD Scholarship details

TUNRA scholarship, $32,192 (2024 rate, indexed annually) for 3.5 years. For a PhD candidate, the living allowance scholarship is for 3.5 years, and the tuition fee scholarship is for four years.

Eligibility Criteria

The PhD candidate will ideally have a science or biomedical background with some experience in molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, virology and/or entomology. The candidate will have the opportunity for training and core involvement in multiple aspects of the project (clinic assessments, laboratory analyses, process evaluation).

The PhD Programme is part of a portfolio of doctoral programmes within Northumbria University.

The PhD Programme allows students to undertake an individual programme of research development that will enable original research to doctoral level in their chosen field of study. The Programme is designed to challenge students at the highest level of thought and to advance career opportunities through enhancing academic and professional development.

The programme aims to enable students to:

• Develop research skills through a programme of in-depth study, and personal and research development.
• Develop expertise in appropriate methods of research and enquiry.
• Produce high-quality research outputs which demonstrate critical judgment and original contribution to knowledge.
• Produce a research thesis (of approximately 80,000 words). 

Students will be expected to pass through milestone targets in each year of study giving clear structure to the PhD programme. For both full and part time programmes, these milestones include Project Approval and Annual Progression.

A 1000 word research proposal, outlining your area of research; please note that even if you are applying for a specific research vacancy with a pre-defined research proposal, you are still required to write a proposal expanding on the provided description of the project. Applied Sciences studentships do not require submission of a proposal, please refer to the studentship advert for further information.

Ill Nigerian PhD student who complained faces losing UK visa

Home office notification of sue agazie highlights ‘weaponisation of immigration status’ by universities when students complain, say critics.

Supporters of a Nigerian PhD student facing potential deportation after her doctoral studies were halted by illness and a breakdown in relations with her supervisor have claimed her plight highlights the precarity of international students who complain about their course.

Sue Agazie, a copywriter from Lagos, moved to the UK in January 2023 to begin a PhD in marketing at Newcastle University Business School on the understanding, she claimed, that she was likely to receive a full scholarship for her studies or would gain enough part-time academic work to cover her living costs.

However, funding and paid work did not materialise in the way suggested, said Ms Agazie, who added that she has run up huge debts to finance her PhD.

Amid a breakdown in relations with her primary supervisor over her money troubles, Ms Agazie was then diagnosed with kidney failure in September 2023.

With a formal complaint launched against Newcastle and her supervisor over allegedly misleading her over funding, Ms Agazie has now been informed that Newcastle has contacted the Home Office over her absence from supervisions – a move that could see her visa revoked.

That would mean her husband and young child, who travelled with Ms Agazie to north-east England, would also be forced to leave the country.

Her case is now being championed by Unis Resist Border Controls, a campaign group that raises awareness of how migrant university staff have  been affected by the UK’s hostile environment policies.  More than 250 people – including many PhD students and scholars – have signed a  petition  urging the Home Office to stop any visa curtailment.

Its spokeswoman Sanaz Raji, a visiting researcher at Northumbria University , said the notification of the Home Office was an example of the “weaponisation of her immigration status” in a disputes process.

In a statement, Newcastle said “complaints are investigated following the university’s standard procedures”. “Where a complaint has been made by a postgraduate student about their supervisor, our normal practice would be to investigate the matter and explore arrangements for an alternative supervisor if that becomes necessary,” it continued.

“We can’t discuss individual cases, but we offer a range of support to postgraduate students including advice on visa issues, hardship funding, and support to have a break in study where there is an illness or other circumstances.”

Under Home Office rules, higher education institutions must notify authorities if students fail to attend class or discontinue their course, although Ms Agazie said she intends to finish her studies.

The lack of support for a “critically ill” student  also indicated how “universities instrumentalise migrant students from the Global South as sources of income that they can afterwards dispose of”, said Ms Raji in a reference to the multimillion-pound revenues received by universities from international postgraduates.

According to official statistics, Nigeria is the UK’s third largest source of international students behind China and India with about  44,000 studying in 2021-22,  mostly at postgraduate level.

According to Ms Raji, Ms Agazie was led to believe that many PhD students in her situation had found plentiful paid work and obtained scholarships, but these apparent success stories did not stand up once they were investigated.

With the threat of visa revocation looming, students would, however, be reluctant to complain if things go wrong, said Ms Agazie. “Forcing an international student into immigration problems while a complaint is under way…is basically telling international students not to complain,” she said.

Graduate Spotlight Times Five: The Povolo quints follow their own paths yet all earn their degrees in four years

Being a quintuplet is exceptionally rare. Rarer still is all five attending the same college and graduating on the same day. But that’s what the Povolo quintuplets – Victoria, Ludovico, Ashley, Michael and Marcus – have accomplished at Montclair State University. On Monday, May 13, they will make history at the University’s Commencement when they walk across the platform to receive their degrees one after the other.

The milestone at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, is believed to be the first time quints have simultaneously graduated from a New Jersey higher ed institution, with the Povolos joining just a handful of other multiple siblings in the nation who celebrated their “quintessential” college experience by graduating from the same college in the same academic year.

From Montclair, the Povolos will earn degrees in five different majors:

• Victoria Povolo, Biochemistry; minor Italian
• Ludovico Povolo, Political Science, minor Pre-Law, Business
• Ashley Povolo, English, Teacher Education Program, certification in P-12
• Michael Povolo, Nutrition and Food Science, concentration Dietetics
• Marcus Povolo, Business Administration, concentration International Business

“Montclair helped us be together, but also helped us to become our own people, with our own majors, our own interests, our own friend groups,” Victoria says. “We customized our own paths, but we got to the finish line together.”

The siblings credit their parents, Paolo Povolo, a building engineer for Cushman & Wakefield, and Silvia Povolo, assistant housekeeping supervisor for the University, for encouraging them to follow their dreams and instilling both a strong work ethic and the importance of education.

“The support that they have for us, obviously, there’s a reason why we made it this far,” Victoria says. “Our parents always encourage us to do our best, and the best doesn’t look the same for everyone, which I think is also something we learned growing up and explains why we’re all doing different things.”

Marcus Povolo has landed a job with the financial giant JPMorgan Chase & Co. He’s the only sibling to live on campus, a move he made so that he could easily access the campus train station to commute to Jersey City for work and have a quiet place to study. To stay on track to graduate in four years, he took courses during the summer and winter breaks, asynchronous classes and expedited classes.

“This definitely wasn’t easy, managing full-time school and work,” Marcus says. “There were times where I figured doing one would be a lot easier. I just had to push myself through.”

Victoria plans to take a year off to work and save money for medical school to study forensic medicine. She’s held several undergraduate research positions in Montclair’s science labs , opportunities she shared in the Amazon-series The College Tour . She’s currently researching personality disorders and interning in a morgue.

Michael Povolo, a student athlete, will continue at Montclair next fall to complete a 4+1 program, meaning after five years he will have earned both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Nutrition. He’s a defensive midfielder on the Red Hawks lacrosse team, interns at an assisted living community, and coaches youth lacrosse.

Ludovico Povolo, a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, is known by his college friends and at the restaurant where he works by his nickname, Vico. Before college he went by his middle name, Masha. His academic interests have also seen changes. While he once saw himself headed to a career in law, a professor pointed out that with his gregarious nature he might want to consider business. He found it a better fit with his evolving interests. He’ll shortly begin work as a sales and marketing representative for Techtronic Industries in northern New Jersey.

Ashley Povolo, a future teacher, is completing her clinical experience as a high school advanced placement English teacher. She works as a University Fellow and studied abroad in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, which she says took her outside the comfort zone of being part of a big family as she navigated the experience on her own. Ashley wrote a poem about how their birth order (Victoria, the oldest, Vico, Ashley, Michael and Marcus, the youngest by minutes) has shaped their lives.

“They’re my best friends,” Ashley says. “We’ve grown up together and literally know everything about each other. So it did hit me the other day that graduation is the last big thing that I’m going to experience with them at the same time.”

The siblings frequently meet on campus for coffee and meals, and share rides to and from school. “I do need that closeness and seeing them all the time and being around them all the time,” Victoria says. “It completes what I need, and the others for sure think the same. We always regroup, no matter how far we’ve been, no matter where we’ve gone, we always come back and regroup.”

The Povolo quintuplets captured the public’s attention when they were born on the Fourth of July, 2002, and dubbed by a local newspaper “Five Little Firecrackers” on their first birthday.

As they’ve grown, the siblings, now 21, say they’ve enjoyed the curiosity that comes with the rarity of being a quint.

“Personally, I love the attention,” says Vico. “I love talking about it. It’s unique and refreshing.”

College graduation promises to put them in the spotlight again. The University, which will hold two Commencements for students based on their college or school, has made accommodations so the Povolos can receive their diplomas together at the morning ceremony on May 13.

“We’ll need a tissue box for my mom,” Michael says. “She’s definitely going to cry.”

Graduation for five, let alone college for five wasn’t a given for the Povolo quintuplets. “I remember our senior year [at Passaic Valley High School],” says Michael. “We were sitting down and asking, ‘What are we going to do for school?’ We talked about community college, jobs and training programs. Each of us wanted very different things in terms of majors. But the one thing we shared was applying to Montclair.”

The University was close enough to their home in Totowa, New Jersey, that the money they saved by commuting might just make college accessible. All five were accepted and Victoria reached out to the University’s financial aid office to ask about scholarships or loans they might qualify for.

“I was very aware of the financial situation of my family,” Victoria says. “If it had been too much, I would have bowed out and just not gone to college because I didn’t want to put that on my parents, and I didn’t want to put that on myself financially.”

But, as Victoria would learn, each of the Povolos qualified for Presidential Scholarships for high-achieving students, and also qualified for need-based grants and small merit scholarships that in total amounted to a tuition-free four years for the family.

At a meeting with high school guidance counselors in February 2020 – supposedly to “explore ways to pay for college” – Montclair staff presented the family with a giant replica check made payable for five higher educations.

Just the week prior, their parents had looked into refinancing their home. “ And then Montclair pulls up and gives us a great deal,” Michael recalls. Times five, the scholarships and financial assistance made what seemed impossible, possible.

“It’s so big we can’t even put words to it,” says their mother, Silvia Povolo, recalling that moment and what it has since meant to the family. “I always sit down with them and say, ‘You had four years of college that came to your table and you had the chance to take it with no cost. Whatever you learned in these four years, it’s a blessing… it’s a key to open a golden door.’”

A few weeks before graduation, they were still deciding how to celebrate but leaning toward a backyard party.

“It’s a gigantic moment for them and for us,” says their father, Paolo. “So basically, we’ve been saying, ‘when one door closes another one opens.’ In the sense that college is coming to an end, we have to think of the future, we have to think of what’s next … and that is in the making.”

Explaining Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle’s chances of European qualification

All the usual twists and turns have made the battle for the Premier League’s European places particularly intriguing heading into the final day of the season.

The top four, however, is all sewn up; Manchester City , Arsenal Liverpool and Aston Villa will represent England in next term’s Champions League .

Tottenham Hotspur looked to be providing the sternest challenge to Unai Emery’s side but five defeats in their last six games have left them staring at a place in the Europa League instead — especially after English sides botched their chances to secure an extra spot in next season’s Champions League .

To secure that, though, Spurs need to fend off the two teams chasing them from below — Newcastle United and Chelsea , two teams who Manchester United can still surpass in the standings. Two of the four will earn a Europa League spot, one will play in the Conference League and one will miss out on European football entirely.

How does Europa League qualification work?

There are two places given to English sides in each season’s Europa League. One is given to the FA Cup winners and the other is given to the team that finishes fifth in the Premier League .

In the instance that the FA Cup winners finish in the Premier League top five, the Europa League position is given to the sixth-placed team.

Tottenham are fifth in the table heading into the final day but can be caught by sixth place Chelsea if they lose to Sheffield United and Chelsea beat Bournemouth .

As for the FA Cup, the final will be played between Manchester City and Manchester United for the second successive year.

If Manchester City win it, the sixth-placed team in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League. If United win the FA Cup, they will play in the Europa League next season.

What about the Conference League?

Only one English team plays in the Conference League each season.

The rules state that the Carabao Cup winners are given that Conference League spot. But, in every season since Europe’s third-tier club competition started in 2021, that place has been deferred to the Premier League table because of the Carabao Cup winners finishing in the top six, and therefore securing a spot in the Europa League or the Champions League via their league finish.

This season’s FA Cup final therefore presents a potentially interesting twist. If Manchester City win on May 25, the Conference League spot will go to the team which finishes seventh in the Premier League.

But if Manchester United win, and finish outside of the top six, the sixth-placed team will get the place. If United win the FA Cup  and  finish in the top six, it will again go to the team in seventh.

The state of play

Despite their awful form, Tottenham should still finish fifth. They need just a point from their final-day trip to Sheffield United to stay where they are.

If they lose at Bramall Lane, Chelsea can only go above them by winning their final game.

Newcastle’s run of four wins in five games, which had put them back in the mix for a Europa League place, came to an end on Saturday with a disappointing home draw against Brighton & Hove Albion. They were then beaten 3-2 by Manchester United to slip down into seventh, with Manchester United moving level on points with them.

Manchester United remain eighth by virtue of their -3 goal difference, which may prove decisive in missing out on European football next season.

Erik ten Hag’s side need an immediate upturn in form and slip-ups from the teams above to make it into either the Europa League or Conference League — or to secure an unlikely FA Cup victory with a win over Manchester City in the final…
