Indiana thinks small market bias is hurting their chances.

Share All sharing options for: Pacers log 78 complaints about refs after getting mauled by Knicks in NBA Playoffs

The Indiana Pacers are buying into the idea that there’s big market bias happening in their second round series against the New York Knicks in the 2024 NBA Playoffs — and they’ve been taking their grievance to the league office. The Pacers filed protests against 49 calls in Game 2, which they felt were incorrect and gave the Knicks an advantage. This comes in addition to protesting 29 calls in Game 1.

Overnight the Pacers filed 49 calls they felt were incorrect from Game 2 to the NBA office, according to a league source. And they sent in the 29 from Game 1 they'd previously withheld as well, for a total of 78. https://t.co/coOKONZDZY — Brian Windhorst (@WindhorstESPN) May 9, 2024

The question of fair officiating vs. big market bias been a long-term talking point among NBA fans, toeing the line of being a conspiracy theory. It’s difficult to make a determination on whether Indiana has a point or not without seeing the calls in question — but fans have noticed extremely uneven officiating in the series.

“Knicks refs” was a trending topic on Twitter Wednesday night, with fans questioning why an incorrect double dribble call on Donte DiVincenzo was overturned in crunch time on Wednesday, but refs didn’t consider reviewing an incorrect kicked ball foul on the Pacers in Game 1.

Rick Carlisle on the overturned double-dribble call toward the end of Q4 tonight: "That's small beans compared to everything else. Small market teams deserve an equal shot. They deserve a fair shot no matter where they're playing" pic.twitter.com/BxfdHspfXt — New York Post Sports (@nypostsports) May 9, 2024

The nature of how both games unfolded is part of the discussion here. Twice in a row the Pacers have come out strong, only to see their leads evaporate in the second half amid a Knicks comeback. In total the officiating gives a slight edge to New York in fouls, with 39 being called against the Pacers to 33 for the Knicks — but Tyrese Haliburton isn’t willing to use the officiating as an excuse for his team’s struggles.

"They outplayed us. Let's not pretend like the refs are the reason we lost. We just got to be better" Haliburton after Game 2 vs. Knicks pic.twitter.com/zxuGZHj2K1 — NBA TV (@NBATV) May 9, 2024

Rick Carlisle’s gripes with officiating aren’t dissimilar to those of Daryl Morey during the 2018 Playoffs when his (then) Rockets faced the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals. In that series Morey similarly protested numerous calls that went Golden State’s way , though it didn’t end up amounting to anything.

It’s extremely unlikely the league office will admit that their officials made any significant mistakes in the series. If anything the Pacers will hope it might check the perceived bias the referees have for the remaining games in this series. That said, it doesn’t fundamentally change the fact that Indiana don’t have an answer for Jalen Brunson in this series, while uneven play from Myles Turner and Aaron Nesmith has allowed the Knicks to dominate the front court.

Indiana needs to find an answer, and appealing to the NBA about bad reffing ain’t it.

Brunson drops 44, leads Knicks over Pacers in Game 5

NEW YORK (AP) — Jalen Brunson scored 44 points, reaching 40 for the fifth time in this postseason, and the New York Knicks moved a win away from their first Eastern Conference finals trip since 2000 by beating the Indiana Pacers 121-91 on Tuesday night in Game 5.

The Knicks rebounded from a blowout loss and guaranteed themselves at least one more game at Madison Square Garden in front of their roaring fans who had been aching to see big games in late spring again. Josh Hart had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Deuce McBride scored 17 points after he was inserted into the starting lineup.

The No. 2-seeded Knicks can win the series Friday night at Indiana after the first two-day break between games in the series. Caitlin Clark’s WNBA home debut with the Indiana Fever is scheduled for Thursday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, causing the extra day that perhaps can benefit a Knicks team that is playing without four key players.

Game 7, if necessary, would be Sunday afternoon.

“We still need one more win so we can’t get too excited about it,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. “We have to understand what we need to do, stay focused on the task at hand. If you feel good about yourself you get knocked down in this league. We’ve got to be ready to go.”

Brunson hurt his right foot in Game 2 and was limited to 18 points Sunday, his lowest of the postseason, when the Pacers ran the Knicks off the floor in a 121-89 romp. He kept insisting he was fine and there was no reason to question that Tuesday.

Pulling up quickly for 3-pointers off the dribble or using his series of fakes and spins to set up soft jumpers in the lane, Brunson shot 18 for 35 and again looked like the player who finished fifth this season in MVP voting, not the one who shot 10 for 26 in Game 3 and 6 for 17 on Sunday.

He scored 28 in the first half, a Knicks playoff record, and then put away the game in the fourth with seven straight points, capped by a three-point play that made it 106-86 with 7:57 to go.

Brunson, who scored 43 in Game 1 to become the fourth player in NBA history with four consecutive 40-point games in the playoffs, had plenty of help.

Alec Burks, who had been out of the rotation entirely until re-emerging after a rash of injuries, added 18 points off the bench and Isaiah Hartenstein had seven points and 17 rebounds. Hartenstein grabbed 12 on the offensive end, helping the Knicks overwhelm the Pacers 53-29 on the glass, with 20 offensive rebounds leading to 26 second-chance points.

“We got annihilated on loose balls, rebounds. Gave up 20 offensive rebounds and 29 more shots. So, we all own it,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “But very embarrassing. Very embarrassing and a hard lesson.”

Pascal Siakam scored 22 points for the sixth-seeded Pacers, who will try to stay unbeaten at home in the postseason to force the decisive game. Myles Turner added 16 but All-Star Tyrese Haliburton had only 13 after averaging 29.7 over the last three games.

Indiana got off to a strong start and was leading 25-20 before the Knicks surged ahead with an 11-0 run en route to a 38-32 lead after one. Carlisle burned three timeouts in the quarter, the crowd seemingly growing louder with each.

Brunson had consecutive baskets for a 13-point lead early in the second quarter and then had the first basket in a 9-0 run that made it 65-47 with 2:11 remaining.

The Knicks haven’t reached the conference finals since the Pacers beat them in 2000 in the sixth meeting between the teams in eight years. This one had some of that 1990s Knicks-Pacers fierceness in a game featuring five technical fouls.

Isaiah Jackson was called for a foul for a hard pick that knocked Donte DiVincenzo to the court in the first half. Hartenstein walked up and got chest-to-chest with Jackson, and Burks also came in and appeared to bring his hand up and make contact with Jackson. All three players were called for technical fouls.

Later, after DiVincenzo slammed down the miss of Brunson’s jumper, he and Turner got tangled up as DiVincenzo tried to fight through a pick. They then screamed at each other after a foul was called and both were given technical fouls as the crowd chanted DiVincenzo’s name while referees reviewed the play.

NBA Fans Irate at Refs for How They Handled Michael Malone’s Game 2 Meltdown

Andy nesbitt | may 7, 2024.

Michael Malone went off on the refs after a no-call in the first quarter.

  • Denver Nuggets

Michael Malone and the Nuggets are in serious trouble in their series with the Timberwolves after getting blown out in Game 2, 106-80 , in front of their home crowd on Monday night. Minnesota now leads the series 2-0.

NBA fans, meanwhile, wondered why Malone didn't get in actual trouble when he ran out on the court in the first quarter to yell at the refs during a break in the action.

Malone was furious and had to be separated from an official yet somehow he didn't get called for a technical foul, even though it clearly looked like he should have been whistled for one.

Here's how that played out:

MICHAEL MALONE GETS IN THE REFS FACE. 😳 pic.twitter.com/RB3WVm8gRO — Hoop Central (@TheHoopCentral) May 7, 2024

Fans ripped the refs and the NBA for not laying down some sort of punishment on Malone, especially since players can get technicals for doing far less worse in games:

They give techs for looking at someone but when Malone screaming in the refs face they don’t give a tech okay @NBA https://t.co/tu679mmkXb — j (@lockedupjb) May 7, 2024
Ant Man gets a tech for looking at opposition player. Malone gets NOTHING when screaming in a refs face. NBA officiating is more inconsistent than the Premier League. It's actually insulting for fans and Adam Silver needs to address how poor the officiating has been all… https://t.co/5H6rxrEPJc — With The English Podcast (@WithTheEnglish1) May 7, 2024
Something like this not getting a tech and/or ejection but stare downs and hanging on the rim getting an instant tech drives me crazy https://t.co/VsUi8OQeC9 — karin. 🇦🇲 (@KarinAbcarians) May 7, 2024
Malone not getting a tech for this is genuinely insane 😭😭😭 Like that alone is enough reason to question whether or not this is fixed in Denver’s favor https://t.co/xBDvguy7Eh — Dave Schillero (@Dave_Schillero) May 7, 2024
Michael Malone not even getting a technical here is insane. Legit the most mad I’ve ever seen a coach without getting a T There is just no standard from a game-by-gam standpoint for refereeing. Continues to be a major NBA issue pic.twitter.com/nTBFBVYFA0 — Sean Barnard (@Sean_Barnard1) May 7, 2024

Pacers reportedly file 78 disputed calls to NBA following Rick Carlisle's criticism of officiating in Knicks series

In what's been two down-to-the-wire wins for the Knicks in their second-round series against the Indiana Pacers , one story has been some controversial calls by the officials , and Pacers coach Rick Carlisle has apparently had enough.

The championship-winning coach started his Game 2 postgame news conference on Wednesday night talking about what he claims is an imbalance of calls from the officials.

"After Game 1 we always go through the film in games where it felt like the whistles weren’t balanced and we pull the clips and there’s a way you can submit them to the NBA office," Carlisle said. "In the playoffs, when you submit things the other team sees what you submit and so there were 29 plays in Game 1 that we thought were clearly called the wrong way. "

Carlisle said he didn't submit the Game 1 film because he thought the Pacers would "get a more balanced whistle" in Game 2, but he felt that wasn't the case.

As a result, the Pacers filed what they believed were 49 incorrect calls from Game 2, plus the 29 calls from Game 1, for a grand total of 78 calls that they have disputed with the NBA league office, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

One example Carlisle gave was in the third quarter of Game 2 when he felt Josh Hart shoved Tyrese Haliburton in the back in front of an official and no call was made.

"The whole world knows that Haliburton’s got a bad back and Hart comes up and shoves him in the back," Carlisle pointed out. "And it’s all over Twitter right now because a few people have shown it to me and [official] JB DeRosa is looking right at it, you can see he’s got vision of the play and he shoves Tyrese to the corner and there’s no whistle, right in the back."

"Give New York credit for the physicality that they’re playing with," he added, "but their physicality is rewarded and ours is penalized time after time."

New York was called for 14 personal fouls while the Pacers were called for 17. The Pacers went to the line 17 times (made just 10 of them) while the Knicks were 18-for-22 from the free-throw line, two of which came off technicals from Carlisle in the waning seconds of the game, a move that the 64-year-old coach said was done to stand up for his players.

A critical moment in the final minutes of the fourth quarter came when the officials originally called Isaiah Hartenstein for a double-dribble but reversed the call after the refs got together.

Carlisle told how he saw the incident and how the reversal was communicated to him.

"One guy just said, 'he didn't double-dribble,'" Carlisle explained. "But it looked like Thibs went out there and argued it and they changed. I can only go by what I saw. That's small beans compared to everything else.

"Small-market teams deserve an equal shot. They deserve a fair shot no matter where they're playing"

The series will now shift to Indiana for Games 3 and 4, with Game 3 scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.

An irate Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone was caught screaming in the face of referee Marc Davis - on a night where his team went down 2-0 in their series against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

In the first quarter, Minnesota guard Anthony Edwards drove into the lane and drew contact with a Nuggets defender in the lane. Davis didn't call a foul on either team, much to the dismay of each side.

But Malone was outraged, walking out onto the court screaming at Davis and getting up in his face as he berated the official for his decision.

Shockingly, Malone did not receive a technical foul for his anger as he walked back to the bench fuming.

He'd have much more to worry about later in the evening as his Nuggets ended up getting blown out 106-80 by Minnesota.

Nuggets stars Nikola Jokic (L) and Jamal Murray (R) shot a combined 8-31 on the night

Those 80 points were the lowest total the Denver Nuggets were held to in an astounding 371 games. It came at the worst time, as the team is now down 2-0 in the series as it turns to Minneapolis.

As for the Timberwolves, this is the first time in franchise history that they took a 2-0 lead in consecutive playoff series'.

Minnesota were led by fantastic 27 point performances from guard Anthony Edwards and center Karl-Anthony Towns. Edwards even received 'M-V-P' chants in the Nuggets' own arena.

Meanwhile, the Nuggets' two stars - Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray - were held to a combined 8-31 shooting line on the night.

Denver was led by Aaron Gordon in scoring with 20 points on the evening.
