First of all, a journey refers to traveling from one place to another. When it comes to journeys, train journeys take the top spot. A train journey certainly is a wonderfully joyous occasion. Furthermore, train journeys fill individuals with a feeling of intense excitement. This mode of the journey is best when the travel distance is long. A train journey creates an aura that cannot be experienced with other types of journeys.

My Experience of Journey by Train

I have always been an avid supporter of train journeys. My involvement with train journeys began in childhood . I live in Lucknow and from here I have undertaken many train journeys. Furthermore, since childhood, I have paid several visits to the hill station of Almora to meet my relatives. Almora is a hill station located in the state of Uttarakhand. Most noteworthy, Almora is situated in the Himalayan mountain region. Due to this, trains cannot travel directly to Almora. Consequently, Kathgodam is the last town station accessible by trains before the mountain range begins.

The trip from Lucknow to kathgodam is quite a lively experience. I have always ensured the reservation of my seats beforehand. So, my train journey begins from Lucknow railway station. As the train undergoes motion and leaves the Lucknow railway station, my excitement begins to rise. Moreover, as the train gathers speed, a thrilling feeling overtakes me.

My train journey from Lucknow to Kathgodam is probably 8-10 hours duration. However, I enjoy every minute of it in spite of the journey being so long. Furthermore, all along the journey, one can purchase items of food and drinks. I almost always purchase meals and refreshments at least twice in the journey.

When slumber overtakes me, I make use of the sleeping berth. I personally find sleeping on the train berth very comfortable. When I wake after a deep sleep, mountains are visible from a distance. Moreover, as the train approaches Kathgodam with menacing speed, the view of mountains gets bigger and bigger. Also, my amusement greatly rises as I see the Himalayas draw closer. Finally, as the train stops at Kathgodam, my delightful train journey comes to an end.

Why Do I Like to Travel by Train?

Comfort is one of the biggest advantages of a train journey. Most noteworthy, one can move freely in a train cabin. Furthermore, in trains, there is a possibility of an ample foot room. Moreover, trains offer comfortable sleeping berths. All of this makes the train journey a relaxing experience.

Beautiful sightseeing is another noteworthy benefit of train journeys. As the train travels, one can enjoy the views of the countryside, farms, forests , factories, etc. This makes train journeys more comprehensive than journeys by air or road.

Train journeys offer a variety of opportunities to pass time. Furthermore, the train offers a sociable environment. In train journeys, conversations between passengers almost always take place. One can make new friends with traveling passengers on the train easily. Also, one can spend time in a handsome manner on a train journey. In a train journey, one can spend time reading something, listening to music, watching videos, sleeping/resting comfortably, etc.

To sum it up, train journeys are truly one of a kind. The train journey offers uniqueness like no other journey. Most noteworthy, the charm of such a journey is unmatchable. The train journey certainly offers an unforgettable rich experience.

A Journey by Train Essay/Paragraph

During last summer vacation, I went on a family trip to Puri with my family. This was my first long journey by train. We reached the Howrah railway station with all our luggage quite early. The train departed from Howrah at around 9 o’clock in the morning. When I looked outside everything was running behind, I loved that scene. The train was moving quite fast. The whole train was crowded.

After boarding, we had our breakfast. I always prefer a window seat, because I can enjoy beautiful nature from there. I was impressed by the beauty of the landscape. Watching the beautiful natural scenes outside gave me extreme happiness. The train finally reached the Puri station at 6 o’clock in the evening. It was an exciting train journey.

Short Essay on A Journey by Train

Train journeys are always very exciting. We get to meet a lot of new people. Two weeks back had a train journey. The name of the train was Howrah-Dhanbad Black Diamond Express. My destination was Asansol. The train departed from Howrah around 6.40 in the morning. The weather was pleasant and I took a window seat.

Most of the passengers inside the train compartment were either reading a newspaper or sleeping. I started reading one of my favourite novels. The constant yelling of the hawkers forced me to close the book and look out of the window. Around 8.30 in the morning I bought a cup of coffee and a packet of biscuits from a hawker. Having small sips in the coffee concentrated on the visuals and images that changed rapidly outside the train compartment.

I noticed that concrete jungle have paved its way to lush green fields and ponds with trees surrounding them. Farmers were tilling children were going to school through the mud track. The ambiance outside was serene and in complete contrast with the atmosphere inside the train.

Introduction:

Once I read a poem. I still remember some of  its lines as follows:

A journey by a speeding train is an exciting experience. The modern age seems to be obsessed with speed. So people prefer to travel by the railways than by road.

Description of the Journey:

One day, my father announced that we were going to visit Shantiniketan during the winter holidays. I was simply thrilled. On the scheduled day, we reached Howrah station in the morning. The Shantiniketan Express stood majestically at the platform. The station was humming with the din and bustle. There were rings of people before the ticket counters. We entered a compartment and settled down for the journey. I managed a seat beside a window. Soon the signal was green at the far end of the platform. Within a minute, the train began to move. We glided out of the station. Then it picked up speed.

As the train thundered on, I surrendered my ears to the rattle of the train wheels. They were making rickety-rackety sounds when they rolled over the tracks. I looked outside through the window to get a view of the Nature outside. The train was passing by harvested fields, meadows, brooklets, and small ponds. Through the window, the world outside looked like a motion picture. Everything looked very bright and pleasant in the morning sunshine.

I looked about my compartment. Father was flipping through a magazine. Mother was chatting with an elderly couple. The hawkers and vendors were selling various foodstuffs. A beggar was singing a song while begging. In the meantime, the train reached at Guskara station. After half an hour it reached Bolpur.

My Feelings:

I got spellbound to see the fantastic wild beauty of nature through the window. The greatness of God manifested in nature’s creations. I remembered some lines of a poem-

“The true pleasing spirits sight’s That may breed true love’s delights” (Nicholas Breton)

The breeze was gentle, fresh, glorious, and a pleasure to breathe. It was pouring into our compartment from outside. I sometimes lost my sense of individuality and seemed to expand through the window. Thus, I wanted to establish a magical link with nature.

Conclusion:

Thus ended my first train journey. This journey was so pleasant that l experienced an intense high.

My Train Journey To Shillong

One of my uncles manages a tea plantation in Shillong. He invited my family to visit during the harvesting season. We decided to go for a vacation. We arrived at the Kolkata train station at 9 am on the scheduled day and bought 3 tickets for the 11 am train. The station has improved significantly since it first started. Coming from Kolkata, it was a lengthy journey.

During my journey on the train, many hawkers entered while I was inside the train. They were selling a variety of goods. Some were selling candies and snacks, others were selling copies of documents, perfumes, and so on. These local railway hawkers were known for their ability to outsell any copywriter with their own sales pitch. They did not use boring or lifeless sales pitches.

While selling goods, some people performed songs while others impersonated politicians. They had a really unique appreciation for books. This journey was one of my core memories as it was my first train journey ever. Me and my family had a lot of fun on the train journey from Kolkata to Shillong.

However, a local train-journey is not devoid of thrill, adventure and happiness either. There is a thrill of being on time, the adventure of exploring local sites and the happiness of being able to travel comfortably and safely. 

Details of My Memorable Train Journey

Last week I traveled to ____________ from _____________ on a local train. It was my maiden train journey. I had always dreamt of visiting ___________ and too by a Train. I was very excited and had made all the arrangements on the previous night. I woke up earlier that day, had my bath and  breakfast. I prepared myself for the journey I was very excited about, I wore my favorite clothes and took some light snacks with me.  I reached the station at 10 am. Just from the first look at the station I knew this was going to be a very thrilling and adventurous journey. The station itself had many stories to tell. There were so many people- families, office-goers, masons, laborers, vendors, the fruit hawkers and food sellers and so on. All looked so busy, so full of life.  I checked into the station and located the platform where my Train was going to arrive. I reached the particular platform no. and sat on one of the many available benches. There were many people waiting for their respective trains. One train arrived just 5 mins after I reached the platform but that was to a separate destination and my train was coming after that. People boarded that train, it waited for a few minutes and after that it departed. As I was sitting in the station for my train to arrive, I saw many trains come and go at different platforms. A deep realization engulfed me- the trains come and go, the station remains the same.

My Experience of Train Journey

Almost 15 minutes later, our train arrived. The train was pretty new and had a very attractive color combination of maroon and blue painted on it. It had “Made In India” written on it in  big letters and our national flag was painted next to it. I felt very proud about it and got more excited about this journey. Since this was my first time travelling by train, I wanted to experience the moment at its fullest and thus before boarding the train I waited to see how the passengers boarded the train and how people wanted to get in first so that they could sit on a seat. After I was done with my experience, I boarded the train before its departure time. I got into the train and was eagerly looking for a seat so that I could sit.  There was so much rush as it was office hour. At first, there was no seat for us to sit. All those who were standing were trying to get themselves a seat but once we moved for a few minutes, everyone settled with their position in the Train, some got a seat and some didn’t. The train started moving and the station moved backwards. The sound it created as the Train moved was something new to me, I had heard it in the movies and dramas but experiencing it first hand was something very enthralling. I was imagining how this sound was being created as the train rolled on the tracks, the giant size and huge weight of the train could be realized as the train accelerated and the sound got louder. It felt so amazing to imagine that the train was still but the trees and the houses were moving. However, it was hard for me to look out from the window because of the crowd. I still managed to stand near the window and get myself a look outside. There were green meadows somewhere and at some places we could see the concrete jungles, buildings and houses constructed alongside the train track. The beauty of green meadows is what I liked the most and wished we could have more of them, the beauty of nature I experienced in the moving train seemed to be more lively and soothing than the commercial areas. There were different kinds of people in the train involved in distinct activities of their own, some in the groups and some alone. The office goers were the regular commuters, so they remained in their group and talked about politics and the sports. The women in the train were sitting and wiping the sweat off their faces. I saw two senior citizens. They were standing. It felt good to see that some of the passengers offered their seats to those two people. However, there were some rowdies too in the train who were standing near the door and were blocking the entrance. People were finding it hard to enter the train because of them. 

As two or three stations passed, the crowd in the train became thin. Now, I can enjoy the journey. I got a seat. The typical sound of the train moving had a rhythm to it. It felt musical. While seated, I could feel the rhythm of the moving train in a better way. I grabbed the snacks I had with me and started to enjoy the journey. Outside the window, I could see the meadows, the houses, the cows and goats. The train was moving at a decent speed and the air from the window brushed my face. It felt good in the sweltering heat. There was a couple sitting on the opposite seat. They had a 5-year old daughter traveling with them. Somehow, the family and I started a conversation and it felt good to meet new people.

I talked to other people in the train as well and they told me about the conveniences the train travel gives them over taking a cab or driving a car themselves. They also explained the difficulties they face in the Train travel like rushin the train, delays in the train timing, cancellation of trains at times and inadequate  seating capacity of the trains. But most of them were very happy with the new trains, people explained that these trains were more comfortable and affordable to them and also the cancellation and delay problems were very less with the new trains.

While I was on the train, many hawkers boarded the compartment. They were selling different kinds of things. Some were selling toffees and snack items, some were selling files and copies, some were selling perfumes and so on. The speciality of these local train hawkers was, they can outshine any advertisement-writer with their own sales-pitch. Their sales pitches were not bland and dry. Some sang songs, some imitated the politicians while selling things. They had a very distinct sense of literature. 

At this point I realized how different forms of employment were generated by introduction of railways and I couldn't even imagine the number of families that were dependent on the trains for their livelihood. I also got to know the fact that Indian railways is the largest employer in India and employs about 1500000 people. The hawkers were changing frequently, they boarded at one station and unboarded after a few stations. Then new hawkers came in at that station and the cycle continued.

There was one thing that I wish I had not experienced. Apart from the green meadows and huge constructions that I saw from the windows, I also saw countless huts and tin-shade houses. There were many slums that were present beside the rail line. The poverty all around was disheartening to see. I could see the children living in these huts and tin houses, somewhere playing and some were helping their parents in doing their work. I wished that they could go to the school and get education so that they could be earning good and could then help their parents and build themselves decent houses. I promised myself to help these poor people when I start earning money.

The train was about to reach my destination station, the rush had again built up and I thought of going near the exit so that it would be easier for me to unboard. I prepared my bag and offered my seat to another person who was standing near my seat. As the train stopped at my destination station, I got down. After leaving the station, I felt like I was living on another planet for the past 40 minutes. It was not a train journey. It was an epiphany.

I chose the empty carriage hoping to be alone with my memories.

The guard waved his flag, then blew his whistle and the train began to move slowly away, Then with a rush the train door opened and a fat middle aged woman about my own age heaved herself into a seat opposite to myself.

Keeping my eyes lowered I pretended to be reading the newspaper on my lap, while I observed out of the corner of my eyes her thick set legs dangling inches from the floor. The train began to gather speed and at the same time her fat legs swung back and forth in time with the motion of the train.

I was as one hypnotised as I stared at the woman who was now humming a little tune that I remembered from my school days. The war had finally ended; The tune was 'Run rabbit run rabbit, run, run, run'

She half turned to me as the offending arm freed itself; her breathing was heavy and laboured The narrow slit eyes with yellow flecks are full of hatred and loathing as she gasped 'So we meet again' then like a rattle snake spitting its venom she leaned forward as if ready to strike, the lips curled above the buck teeth 'You are Meg Brent, am I right?'

I nodded, bewildered and frightened, my voice shook 'Who are you?' I whispered, as if I didn't know gaining time, hoping for I knew not what.

'Run rabbit run rabbit, run, run, run' I said I would kill you one day remember?'

Twenty five years to this very day, was the day when us sixth formers went our different ways.

Gertie Harris the bully had grown strong and fatter than ever, I was small compared to her and she was going to kill me I was sure.

The tunnel.....yes....thats what she was waiting for, she was watching my every move with gloating amusement. I closed my eyes and prayed.

I caught a glimpse of the fat legs coming to-wards me, I felt the fat podgy hands squeezing my throat. In desperation I screamed holy murder and clawed the air in an endeavour to free myself; my legs flayed wildly this way and thataway; I could feel myself suffocating, I gave one last almighty scream that echoed through the tunnel, the train screamed an encore.

'Wake up' shouted my husband, 'Its your school reunion today remember, twenty five years isn't it?' He looked at the bed clothes tumbled on the floor. 'What was you dreaming about? any body would think you was being murdered the way you screamed and threw yourself ~

I gave an audible sigh of relief 'I`ve been on a train journey'

'Where to' he asked.

'To hell and back' I replied.

It was all great fun. I slept comfortably at night and woke up late.

The breakfast was served almost immediately after I woke up. After having the breakfast, I went and stood by the train door which was half opened. The view outside was beautiful. I love nature and I can watch the trees, hills and the water bodies for hours. It soothes and pleases my senses and offers a delightful experience.

Traveling by train is the most fun and enjoyable experience to have. On the way, there are many sceneries, beautiful fields, small towns that train passes by.

Many food snacks and drinking beverages are available on the stations to buy. Stations have a good sanitation system with separate sections for men and women. Every station has a ticket counter for the passengers to buy their tickets.

In summers during my vacations, my family planned to go to my Nani’s house who lives in Mumbai. She lives alone there. I reached to Lucknow Junction with my family. My father went to the ticket counter for buying the tickets.

After he bought the ticket, the train came within 15 minutes. The station was well cleaned and a sweeper working there. I saw many stalls line by line selling different snacks. There was a hand pump for drinking water and I saw a line of people waiting to arrive at their chance of having water. A person was standing who was pulling the handle of the hand pump up and down slowly in continuous motion.

The train waited on the station for half an hour for the passengers to come and settle down. Outside the train seem so big, colored with a blue and black color combination.

The train was having many births for sleepers and the remaining ten births were for AC booked passengers. There were three stairs to climb the train. My birth was booked in AC. A coolie came for handling our luggage and took it to our seats. I, with my father and mother, went inside the train to take our seats.

Inside the train, the passenger seats were proper and the floor was cleaned and was filled with aroma. Inside the cabin, there were three seats with upper, middle and lower on both left and right sides from the front.

Near the window I saw, a charger point and slab fixed in between the seats. There was a hook to hang any cloth from it. On the side, there were two seats upper and lower with curtains fixed. The seats were having white bedsheets and a quilt to wear.

In the meantime, the train was getting filled and after a loud whistle coming from the engine of the train, it started to move. I looked outside the window many people were running behind the train. Some men had tokens in their hand filled with food.

Some men were running with a big kettle in their hands to serve tea. Far, outside near the sleeper section people were pushing each other to get inside the train. Some people were only standing on the platform and some were shouting. There was too much noise on the platform as the train was moving slowly for some minutes.

It was 6 o’clock in the evening and the sun was slowly setting down. The lights on the platform were bright. After reaching the outer the train started taking its speed and that is how my journey started. There were three passengers in front of me.

On upper birth, a man was talking on the phone, in the middle a woman was with her infant and on the lower was an old woman who was wearing spectacles and trying to read the newspaper. She was speaking the sentences she was reading from the newspaper.

I was sitting on the lap of my mother. She took out the lunch and served the food to my father. She was serving me food from her hand and I took some bites. I was looking outside and inside too. Inside the train was so cool because our tickets were booked in the AC compartment. Slowly people started coming serving tea and food.

In the night, we had dinner and had sound sleep. In the morning, our train reached Nasik station and I had Vada Pao and dosa in my breakfast. There were five hours more left to reach the station. Then after some time, we reached the destination and the name of the station was Chattrapati Shivaji Station. From there, we took the cab and reached it very safe for my Naani’s house.

A Journey by Train Essay

The long-awaited summer vacation arrived at last. The extreme heat in the plans made me think that I should pass my holidays on the hills. Shimla was chosen as my summer Resort. One ideal morning I arrived at the railway station with luggage and got my ticket.

The railway station presented a scene of considerable confusion. Many poor villages sat, waiting patiently, in clustered around their pots and pans. Besides the actual passengers, the railway station was crowded with those who had come to see off their friends and relatives. In 10 minutes, the train that was to take me to Ambala arrived.

The train came to standstill and at once the passengers made a great rush. I got into a compartment. Sitting in a corner near a window, I began to read the morning paper. In another 5 minutes, the guard blew his whistle and waved off the green flag. The bell rang and the engine with a loud whistle glided smoothly out of the railway station.

The compartment in which I thought was crowded to suffocation. People of all communities were huddled together. Some of the passengers were rude, others were polite. Some were shy and kept quiet.

A few soon entered into an animated conversation with their fellow passengers. A travelling agent soon appeared on the scene. He introduced himself to the audience with a short speech and then started advertising his goods.

As the train sped on, it passed by green fields and then through the beautiful forest. Now and then I could see cattle wallowing in muddy pools and farmers ploughing their field. Idle people sat and smoked and shady trees. Here and there we saw fields covered with golden corn and gardens with clusters of fruit trees.

At noon the train arrived at Ambala. In the evening we reached Kalka where we changed for Shimla. The train now went uphill. It passed through dark tunnels and crossed mountain streams.

The scenery on either side of the railway line was picturesque. All sorts of beautiful birds flitted across the landscape. At last the train reached Shimla which was my destination. Alighting from the compartment I took my way to the nearest hotel. What a pleasant journey it was!

Introduction

Trains always fascinated me since my childhood days. When I was young, I use to run to watch a train because there was a railway line near my house. There was proper barricading still it was visible. The sharp horn or train used to make me feel crazy and forced me to run. I was really very much fond of trains. So, now it was my trip to Mumbai and I was just 10.

A Memorable Journey

Although I have traveled a lot, this trip holds a special place in my heart. It was not my first trip still I was super excited. We visited the railway station at 9 AM and the train was delayed by 2 hours due to bad weather and fog. We were waiting on the platform meanwhile another train came and board the platform. Luckily it was the engine in front of us. I never noticed the engine so carefully; I forced my father to take me closer.

When I went close the driver inside cheered me up and accepted my wish to see the engine from inside. I was just 10 but I can still remember each and every detail I saw and the chauffeur told me. There were a few gear buttons and a small staring wheel. He told me that they never sleep while driving and follow all the rules for the safety of passengers.

Finally, we came down and after some time our train arrived and on the entire journey, I was amused about the engine room and how the drivers run a train. In my entire journey, I asked many questions and my father answered all of them because he is also an engineer and knows about trains.

The way a small seed can have such a big tree similarly a single thought can give you a new direction. From that day I decided to become an engineer and develop technology so that our drivers could also sleep and the journey could be equally enjoyable for the passenger and the chauffeur.

Our journey started and we made different groups there were both boys and girls in our group. You can imagine a bogie full of students and there were only 4 teachers to take care of us. But our teachers were very good they didn’t stop us and they also enjoyed the journey with us. Soon it started to rain and it was an amazing experience to witness the rain on a train with my friends. Soon we started playing antakshari.

The entire bogie was divided into two groups and we started our game. Meanwhile one of the old age men on another birth started singing one of the famous songs ‘Zindagi Ek Safar hai Suhana’ and all of us followed and the entire coach was singing the song. It was an amazing moment and other passengers also enjoyed our company and joined us.

It was not only memorable for us but also for the old man, he told us that in his entire life he never enjoyed a train journey so much. After this, we had our dinner and all of us shared our food and enjoyed that evening. The next day there was a long queue for the washroom, all the students-maintained silence and rushed on the breakfast. The entire journey passed in an amazing way. We played various games and we also practiced our act in between and spend time with our friends.

A train journey can be so amazing, I didn’t realize before. Although I love traveling, this journey was something very close to my heart.

• When we spend some time in a certain place, we start feeling attached and the same happened, after spending near about two days on the train we got used to the environment and the beautiful scenario passing behind seems like a movie on our window. We passed through beautiful mountains rivers and it was raining at the same time.
• It was so special when our teachers sang with us and also danced, it was just possible because we traveled on train otherwise; we could never enjoy so much on an air route.
• We were away from our parents but our teachers took care of us and it was really special for me.

Another big difference between narrative essays and creative fiction—as well as other kinds of essays—is that narrative essays are based on motifs. A motif is a dominant idea or theme, one that you establish before writing the essay. As you’re crafting the narrative, it’ll feed back into your motif to create a comprehensive picture of whatever that motif is.

For example, say you want to write a narrative essay about how your first day in high school helped you establish your identity. You might discuss events like trying to figure out where to sit in the cafeteria, having to describe yourself in five words as an icebreaker in your math class, or being unsure what to do during your lunch break because it’s no longer acceptable to go outside and play during lunch. All of those ideas feed back into the central motif of establishing your identity.

The important thing to remember is that while a narrative essay is typically told chronologically and intended to read like a story, it is not purely for entertainment value. A narrative essay delivers its theme by deliberately weaving the motifs through the events, scenes, and details. While a narrative essay may be entertaining, its primary purpose is to tell a complete story based on a central meaning.

Unlike other essay forms, it is totally okay—even expected—to use first-person narration in narrative essays. If you’re writing a story about yourself, it’s natural to refer to yourself within the essay. It’s also okay to use other perspectives, such as third- or even second-person, but that should only be done if it better serves your motif. Generally speaking, your narrative essay should be in first-person perspective.

Though your motif choices may feel at times like you’re making a point the way you would in an argumentative essay, a narrative essay’s goal is to tell a story, not convince the reader of anything. Your reader should be able to tell what your motif is from reading, but you don’t have to change their mind about anything. If they don’t understand the point you are making, you should consider strengthening the delivery of the events and descriptions that support your motif.

Narrative essays also share some features with analytical essays, in which you derive meaning from a book, film, or other media. But narrative essays work differently—you’re not trying to draw meaning from an existing text, but rather using an event you’ve experienced to convey meaning. In an analytical essay, you examine narrative, whereas in a narrative essay you create narrative.

The structure of a narrative essay is also a bit different than other essays. You’ll generally be getting your point across chronologically as opposed to grouping together specific arguments in paragraphs or sections. To return to the example of an essay discussing your first day of high school and how it impacted the shaping of your identity, it would be weird to put the events out of order, even if not knowing what to do after lunch feels like a stronger idea than choosing where to sit. Instead of organizing to deliver your information based on maximum impact, you’ll be telling your story as it happened, using concrete details to reinforce your theme.

3 Great Narrative Essay Examples

One of the best ways to learn how to write a narrative essay is to look at a great narrative essay sample. Let’s take a look at some truly stellar narrative essay examples and dive into what exactly makes them work so well.

A Ticket to the Fair by David Foster Wallace

Today is Press Day at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, and I’m supposed to be at the fairgrounds by 9:00 A.M. to get my credentials. I imagine credentials to be a small white card in the band of a fedora. I’ve never been considered press before. My real interest in credentials is getting into rides and shows for free. I’m fresh in from the East Coast, for an East Coast magazine. Why exactly they’re interested in the Illinois State Fair remains unclear to me. I suspect that every so often editors at East Coast magazines slap their foreheads and remember that about 90 percent of the United States lies between the coasts, and figure they’ll engage somebody to do pith-helmeted anthropological reporting on something rural and heartlandish. I think they asked me to do this because I grew up here, just a couple hours’ drive from downstate Springfield. I never did go to the state fair, though—I pretty much topped out at the county fair level. Actually, I haven’t been back to Illinois for a long time, and I can’t say I’ve missed it.

Throughout this essay, David Foster Wallace recounts his experience as press at the Illinois State Fair. But it’s clear from this opening that he’s not just reporting on the events exactly as they happened—though that’s also true— but rather making a point about how the East Coast, where he lives and works, thinks about the Midwest.

In his opening paragraph, Wallace states that outright: “Why exactly they’re interested in the Illinois State Fair remains unclear to me. I suspect that every so often editors at East Coast magazines slap their foreheads and remember that about 90 percent of the United States lies between the coasts, and figure they’ll engage somebody to do pith-helmeted anthropological reporting on something rural and heartlandish.”

Not every motif needs to be stated this clearly , but in an essay as long as Wallace’s, particularly since the audience for such a piece may feel similarly and forget that such a large portion of the country exists, it’s important to make that point clear.

But Wallace doesn’t just rest on introducing his motif and telling the events exactly as they occurred from there. It’s clear that he selects events that remind us of that idea of East Coast cynicism , such as when he realizes that the Help Me Grow tent is standing on top of fake grass that is killing the real grass beneath, when he realizes the hypocrisy of craving a corn dog when faced with a real, suffering pig, when he’s upset for his friend even though he’s not the one being sexually harassed, and when he witnesses another East Coast person doing something he wouldn’t dare to do.

Wallace is literally telling the audience exactly what happened, complete with dates and timestamps for when each event occurred. But he’s also choosing those events with a purpose—he doesn’t focus on details that don’t serve his motif. That’s why he discusses the experiences of people, how the smells are unappealing to him, and how all the people he meets, in cowboy hats, overalls, or “black spandex that looks like cheesecake leotards,” feel almost alien to him.

All of these details feed back into the throughline of East Coast thinking that Wallace introduces in the first paragraph. He also refers back to it in the essay’s final paragraph, stating:

At last, an overarching theory blooms inside my head: megalopolitan East Coasters’ summer treats and breaks and literally ‘getaways,’ flights-from—from crowds, noise, heat, dirt, the stress of too many sensory choices….The East Coast existential treat is escape from confines and stimuli—quiet, rustic vistas that hold still, turn inward, turn away. Not so in the rural Midwest. Here you’re pretty much away all the time….Something in a Midwesterner sort of actuates , deep down, at a public event….The real spectacle that draws us here is us.

Throughout this journey, Wallace has tried to demonstrate how the East Coast thinks about the Midwest, ultimately concluding that they are captivated by the Midwest’s less stimuli-filled life, but that the real reason they are interested in events like the Illinois State Fair is that they are, in some ways, a means of looking at the East Coast in a new, estranging way.

The reason this works so well is that Wallace has carefully chosen his examples, outlined his motif and themes in the first paragraph, and eventually circled back to the original motif with a clearer understanding of his original point.

When outlining your own narrative essay, try to do the same. Start with a theme, build upon it with examples, and return to it in the end with an even deeper understanding of the original issue. You don’t need this much space to explore a theme, either—as we’ll see in the next example, a strong narrative essay can also be very short.

Death of a Moth by Virginia Woolf

After a time, tired by his dancing apparently, he settled on the window ledge in the sun, and, the queer spectacle being at an end, I forgot about him. Then, looking up, my eye was caught by him. He was trying to resume his dancing, but seemed either so stiff or so awkward that he could only flutter to the bottom of the window-pane; and when he tried to fly across it he failed. Being intent on other matters I watched these futile attempts for a time without thinking, unconsciously waiting for him to resume his flight, as one waits for a machine, that has stopped momentarily, to start again without considering the reason of its failure. After perhaps a seventh attempt he slipped from the wooden ledge and fell, fluttering his wings, on to his back on the window sill. The helplessness of his attitude roused me. It flashed upon me that he was in difficulties; he could no longer raise himself; his legs struggled vainly. But, as I stretched out a pencil, meaning to help him to right himself, it came over me that the failure and awkwardness were the approach of death. I laid the pencil down again.

In this essay, Virginia Woolf explains her encounter with a dying moth. On surface level, this essay is just a recounting of an afternoon in which she watched a moth die—it’s even established in the title. But there’s more to it than that. Though Woolf does not begin her essay with as clear a motif as Wallace, it’s not hard to pick out the evidence she uses to support her point, which is that the experience of this moth is also the human experience.

In the title, Woolf tells us this essay is about death. But in the first paragraph, she seems to mostly be discussing life—the moth is “content with life,” people are working in the fields, and birds are flying. However, she mentions that it is mid-September and that the fields were being plowed. It’s autumn and it’s time for the harvest; the time of year in which many things die.

In this short essay, she chronicles the experience of watching a moth seemingly embody life, then die. Though this essay is literally about a moth, it’s also about a whole lot more than that. After all, moths aren’t the only things that die—Woolf is also reflecting on her own mortality, as well as the mortality of everything around her.

At its core, the essay discusses the push and pull of life and death, not in a way that’s necessarily sad, but in a way that is accepting of both. Woolf begins by setting up the transitional fall season, often associated with things coming to an end, and raises the ideas of pleasure, vitality, and pity.

At one point, Woolf tries to help the dying moth, but reconsiders, as it would interfere with the natural order of the world. The moth’s death is part of the natural order of the world, just like fall, just like her own eventual death.

All these themes are set up in the beginning and explored throughout the essay’s narrative. Though Woolf doesn’t directly state her theme, she reinforces it by choosing a small, isolated event—watching a moth die—and illustrating her point through details.

With this essay, we can see that you don’t need a big, weird, exciting event to discuss an important meaning. Woolf is able to explore complicated ideas in a short essay by being deliberate about what details she includes, just as you can be in your own essays.

Notes of a Native Son by James Baldwin

On the twenty-ninth of July, in 1943, my father died. On the same day, a few hours later, his last child was born. Over a month before this, while all our energies were concentrated in waiting for these events, there had been, in Detroit, one of the bloodiest race riots of the century. A few hours after my father’s funeral, while he lay in state in the undertaker’s chapel, a race riot broke out in Harlem. On the morning of the third of August, we drove my father to the graveyard through a wilderness of smashed plate glass.

Like Woolf, Baldwin does not lay out his themes in concrete terms—unlike Wallace, there’s no clear sentence that explains what he’ll be talking about. However, you can see the motifs quite clearly: death, fatherhood, struggle, and race.

Throughout the narrative essay, Baldwin discusses the circumstances of his father’s death, including his complicated relationship with his father. By introducing those motifs in the first paragraph, the reader understands that everything discussed in the essay will come back to those core ideas. When Baldwin talks about his experience with a white teacher taking an interest in him and his father’s resistance to that, he is also talking about race and his father’s death. When he talks about his father’s death, he is also talking about his views on race. When he talks about his encounters with segregation and racism, he is talking, in part, about his father.

Because his father was a hard, uncompromising man, Baldwin struggles to reconcile the knowledge that his father was right about many things with his desire to not let that hardness consume him, as well.

Baldwin doesn’t explicitly state any of this, but his writing so often touches on the same motifs that it becomes clear he wants us to think about all these ideas in conversation with one another.

At the end of the essay, Baldwin makes it more clear:

This fight begins, however, in the heart and it had now been laid to my charge to keep my own heart free of hatred and despair. This intimation made my heart heavy and, now that my father was irrecoverable, I wished that he had been beside me so that I could have searched his face for the answers which only the future would give me now.

Here, Baldwin ties together the themes and motifs into one clear statement: that he must continue to fight and recognize injustice, especially racial injustice, just as his father did. But unlike his father, he must do it beginning with himself—he must not let himself be closed off to the world as his father was. And yet, he still wishes he had his father for guidance, even as he establishes that he hopes to be a different man than his father.

In this essay, Baldwin loads the front of the essay with his motifs, and, through his narrative, weaves them together into a theme. In the end, he comes to a conclusion that connects all of those things together and leaves the reader with a lasting impression of completion—though the elements may have been initially disparate, in the end everything makes sense.

You can replicate this tactic of introducing seemingly unattached ideas and weaving them together in your own essays. By introducing those motifs, developing them throughout, and bringing them together in the end, you can demonstrate to your reader how all of them are related. However, it’s especially important to be sure that your motifs and clear and consistent throughout your essay so that the conclusion feels earned and consistent—if not, readers may feel mislead.

5 Key Tips for Writing Narrative Essays

Narrative essays can be a lot of fun to write since they’re so heavily based on creativity. But that can also feel intimidating—sometimes it’s easier to have strict guidelines than to have to make it all up yourself. Here are a few tips to keep your narrative essay feeling strong and fresh.

Develop Strong Motifs

Motifs are the foundation of a narrative essay . What are you trying to say? How can you say that using specific symbols or events? Those are your motifs.

In the same way that an argumentative essay’s body should support its thesis, the body of your narrative essay should include motifs that support your theme.

Try to avoid cliches, as these will feel tired to your readers. Instead of roses to symbolize love, try succulents. Instead of the ocean representing some vast, unknowable truth, try the depths of your brother’s bedroom. Keep your language and motifs fresh and your essay will be even stronger!

Use First-Person Perspective

In many essays, you’re expected to remove yourself so that your points stand on their own. Not so in a narrative essay—in this case, you want to make use of your own perspective.

Sometimes a different perspective can make your point even stronger. If you want someone to identify with your point of view, it may be tempting to choose a second-person perspective. However, be sure you really understand the function of second-person; it’s very easy to put a reader off if the narration isn’t expertly deployed.

If you want a little bit of distance, third-person perspective may be okay. But be careful—too much distance and your reader may feel like the narrative lacks truth.

That’s why first-person perspective is the standard. It keeps you, the writer, close to the narrative, reminding the reader that it really happened. And because you really know what happened and how, you’re free to inject your own opinion into the story without it detracting from your point, as it would in a different type of essay.

Stick to the Truth

Your essay should be true. However, this is a creative essay, and it’s okay to embellish a little. Rarely in life do we experience anything with a clear, concrete meaning the way somebody in a book might. If you flub the details a little, it’s okay—just don’t make them up entirely.

Also, nobody expects you to perfectly recall details that may have happened years ago. You may have to reconstruct dialog from your memory and your imagination. That’s okay, again, as long as you aren’t making it up entirely and assigning made-up statements to somebody.

Dialog is a powerful tool. A good conversation can add flavor and interest to a story, as we saw demonstrated in David Foster Wallace’s essay. As previously mentioned, it’s okay to flub it a little, especially because you’re likely writing about an experience you had without knowing that you’d be writing about it later.

However, don’t rely too much on it. Your narrative essay shouldn’t be told through people explaining things to one another; the motif comes through in the details. Dialog can be one of those details, but it shouldn’t be the only one.

Use Sensory Descriptions

Because a narrative essay is a story, you can use sensory details to make your writing more interesting. If you’re describing a particular experience, you can go into detail about things like taste, smell, and hearing in a way that you probably wouldn’t do in any other essay style.

These details can tie into your overall motifs and further your point. Woolf describes in great detail what she sees while watching the moth, giving us the sense that we, too, are watching the moth. In Wallace’s essay, he discusses the sights, sounds, and smells of the Illinois State Fair to help emphasize his point about its strangeness. And in Baldwin’s essay, he describes shattered glass as a “wilderness,” and uses the feelings of his body to describe his mental state.

All these descriptions anchor us not only in the story, but in the motifs and themes as well. One of the tools of a writer is making the reader feel as you felt, and sensory details help you achieve that.

Narrative: The spoken or written account of connected events; a story

Narrative Introductions

The introduction of a narrative essay sets the scene for the story that follows. Interesting introductions—for any kind of writing—engage and draw readers in because they want to know more.

Since narratives tell a story and involve events, the introduction of a narrative quite often starts in the middle of the action in order to bring the reader into the story immediately, as shown in examples 1, 3, and 5 below. Other effective introductions briefly provide background for the point of the story—often the lesson learned—as in 4 below and the first example on the reverse side.

Below are some strategies for writing effective openings. Remember your introduction should be interesting and draw your reader in. It should make your audience want to read more. If it's a person , begin with a description of the person and then say why that person mattered. If it's an event , begin with the action or begin by reflecting back on why the event mattered, then go into the narrative.

• "Potter...take off!" my coach yelled as I was cracking yet another joke during practice.
• Why do such a small percentage of high school athletes play Division One sports?
• It was a cold, rainy night, under the lights on the field. I lined up the ball on the penalty line under the wet grass. After glancing up at the tied score, I stared into the goalkeeper's eyes.
• My heart pounds in my chest. My stomach full of nervous butterflies. I hear the crowd talking and names being cheered.
• Slipping the red and white uniform over my head for the first time is a feeling I will never forget.
• "No football." Those words rang in my head for hours as I thought about what a stupid decision I had made three nights before.
• "SNAP!" I heard the startling sound of my left knee before I ever felt the pain.
• According to the NCAA, there are over 400,000 student-athletes in the United States.

Narrative Story

• Unified: Ensure all actions in your story develop a central idea or argument.
• Interesting: Draw your readers into your scene(s), making them feel as if they're experiencing them first-hand.
• Coherent: Indicate changes in time, location, and characters clearly (even if your story is not chronological).
• Climactic: Include a moment (the climax) when your ending is revealed or the importance of events is made clear.
• Remember the 5 W's : Who? What? When? Where? Why?
• Write vividly : Include significant sensory information in the scene (sight, sound, touch, smell, taste) to make readers feel they are there
• Develop " Thick Descriptions "

Clifford Geertz describes thick descriptions as accounts that include not only facts but also commentary and interpretation . The goal is to vividly describe an action or scene, often through the use of metaphors, analogies, and other forms of interpretation that can emote strong feelings and images in your readers' minds.

"The flatness of the Delta made the shack, the quarters, and the railroad tracks nearby seem like some tabletop model train set. Like many Mississippi shacks, this one looked as if no one had lived there since the birth of the blues. Four sunflowers leaned alongside a sagging porch. When the front door creaked open, cockroaches bigger than pecans scurried for cover [...] walls wept with mildew."

• Does the story have a clear and unifying idea? If not, what could that idea be?
• If the story doesn't include a thesis sentence, is the unifying idea of the story clear without it?
• Is the story unified, with all the details contributing to the central idea?
• Is the story arranged chronologically? If not, is the organization of ideas and events still effective and clear?
• Do the transitions show the movement from idea to idea and scene to scene?
• Are there enough details?
• Is there dialogue at important moments?
• Is there a climax to the story—moment at which the action is resolved or a key idea is revealed?

Historical Fictions Research Conference, Manchester, 13th & 14th February 2025

The Historical Fictions Research Network (see https://historicalfictionsresearch.org/ ) aims to create a place for the discussion of all aspects of the construction of the historical narrative. The focus of the conference is the way we construct history, the narratives and fictions people assemble and how. We welcome both academic and practitioner presentations. The Network addresses a wide variety of disciplines, including Archaeology, Architecture, Art History, Cartography, Cultural Studies, Film Studies, Gaming, Gender, Geography, History, Larping, Linguistics, Literature, Media Studies, Memory Studies, Museum Studies, Musicology, Politics, Queer Studies, Race, Reception Studies, Re-enactment, Transformative Works.

For the 2025 conference, the HFRN seeks to engage in scholarly discussions on the topic of place in historical fictions.

As the geographer David Harvey points out, the construction of identities together with notions of belonging, power and freedom rest upon understandings of place. Perceived differences and affinities across and between populations, as well as over time, are often spatially determined, and because dreams of the future and imaginaries of the past are inevitably linked to space and territory, the historical imagination cannot be separated from the geographical. A sense of place underpins cultural memory and the imagined community of the nation through time. Conversely, as Paul Gilroy has shown, place is also crucial to the diasporic imagination, and it is moreover through re-visiting the relationship between place and time that alternative pasts can be imagined. Place is central to discourses around nostalgia, notions of golden ages, and the politics of home and belonging.

Place is integral to historical fictions as they attempt to reconstruct and re-present the ways and worlds of the past, helping to locate stories and characters in time and often conferring a sense of authenticity. Narratives of both progress and decline are usually anchored by location, and processes of change are often codified through the relationship between people and space. Place can be a device for exploring the otherness, the ‘horrors’ of the past. Alternatively, it can instil a sense of continuity and commonality between ages.  Landscapes, including urban spaces are ‘storied’ and are, in the words of Paul Readman “‘sites of memory’ - focal points for mobilising a collective consciousness of the past”. As Readman goes on to point out, the association between place and human pasts transforms the former into heritage which in turn is bound up with constructions of collective identities. As Raymond Williams notes, different rural and urban environments, including that of the house, express social and moral values.

Places are thus political. They are often associated with conservative histories: with instincts of preservation, of stasis, and with property rights, inheritance, and the upholding of unequal social orders - ideas which, for instance, often under-pin the country-house narrative. At the same time, place can be used to posit new ways of looking at the past, to assert alternative geographical identities to that of the national and to awaken suppressed histories. As is shown by right-wing reactions to the British National Trust’s policy of revealing its properties’ economic roots, such perspectives offer radical possibilities, helping to re-centre the stories of marginalised communities and destabilise accepted norms and beliefs.

Papers are invited on topics related but not limited to:

• The meaning of landscapes and/or urban settings in historical fictions
• The use of mise-en-scène in historical film, TV or games
• Country-house historical fictions
• Nostalgia in historical fictions
• Diasporic historical fictions
• The use of settings in historical fictions
• The portrayal of travel in historical fictions
• The construction (or deconstruction) of place-based identities in historical fictions
• The reparative potential of place in historical fictions
• Post-national or transnational historical fictions
• Maps or other spatial paratexts in historical fictions

HFRC 2025 will be an in-person event taking place at Manchester Central Library, The Friends’ Meeting House, Manchester and The International Anthony Burgess Foundation, Manchester. All these venues are situated in the city centre. Piccadilly and Victoria Railway Stations are in the vicinity, and Manchester Airport is approximately 20 minutes away by train.

The organisers are Professor Jerome de Groot, University of Manchester, Dr Dorothea Flothow, University of Salzburg (Conference Manager), Dr Christine Lehnen, University of Exeter, Dr Siobhan O’Connor and Dr Paul Wake, Manchester Metropolitan University.

Proposals for 20-minute papers are due 28th June 2024 . They should consist of a title and an abstract of no more than 250 words. Panel proposals are also welcome. If you are proposing a panel, please provide a 700-word (maximum) description of the topic of the panel and the titles of individual papers; and for each participant the name, email address and brief statement (no more than 100 words) about the person’s work including relevant publications, presentations, or projects-in-progress. Chinese Woman Jailed for Reporting on Covid Is Set to Be Freed

Yet Zhang Zhan’s supporters and human rights activists who had followed her case said they could not reach her or her family members.

Zhang Zhan, thought to be the first person in China imprisoned for documenting the early days of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, was expected to be released on Monday, after serving a four-year sentence.

But in a sign of how eager the Chinese government remains to suppress public discussion of the outbreak, it was unclear on Monday evening whether Ms. Zhang, 40, had actually been set free. The lawyer who represented Ms. Zhang during her trial, Zhang Keke (the two are not related), said he could not reach her mother all day. Reached by phone, officials at the Shanghai prison administration declined to comment.

“Even though she will have served her sentence, there are doubts regarding the Chinese regime’s willingness to give her back her freedom,” Reporters Without Borders, the international media watchdog group, said in a statement several days before her expected release. The group, which gave Ms. Zhang a press freedom award in 2021, noted that journalists released from imprisonment in China are often kept under surveillance.

Ms. Zhang was an early symbol of the mistrust that many Chinese harbored toward the government’s handling of the outset of the pandemic, and the hunger they had for unfiltered information. A former lawyer from Shanghai, she traveled in early 2020 to Wuhan , the city where the virus was first detected, as a self-styled citizen journalist.

For months, she filmed amateur, often shaky videos that contradicted the government’s narrative of a smooth, triumphant response to the crisis. She visited a crematory and a crowded hospital, where rolling beds lined the hallway. She recorded the city’s empty train station and tried to interview residents about the lockdown, though many brushed her off or requested anonymity, seemingly out of fear of reprisals.

She had never done any reporting before, friends said at the time, but she was motivated by her Christian faith and a sense of outrage at the government’s one-sided narrative.

“If we just wallow in our sadness and don’t do something to change this reality, then our emotions are cheap,” Ms. Zhang said in one video.

The government, busy trying to contain infections and maintain the lockdown of the city of 11 million, for a time let a small measure of independent reporting on the outbreak slip through. Some of Ms. Zhang’s videos that she posted to Chinese social media were censored, but she also uploaded them to YouTube , which is banned in China.

But before long, the crackdown on independent reporting began in earnest. Other citizen journalists started disappearing . Ms. Zhang acknowledged the risks but kept posting — about the lockdown, and then, after it was lifted in April 2020, its aftermath. Then, that May, she was arrested and brought back to Shanghai.

Still, even in detention, Ms. Zhang remained defiant. She began several prolonged hunger strikes, according to her lawyers, and grew so weak that she used a wheelchair to appear at her trial. The authorities force-fed her through a feeding tube, her lawyers said.

Ms. Zhang was sentenced in December 2020 to four years in prison , on the charge of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble,” a catchall offense the government frequently uses to silence critics.

Ms. Zhang’s plight quickly became a rallying cry for human rights activists and foreign governments critical of China’s suppression of free speech. When news emerged in 2021 that Ms. Zhang was severely ill, the U.S. State Department called for her immediate release , as did groups such as Human Rights Watch.

But many who tried to advocate for Ms. Zhang from within China seemed to become targets themselves. Her brother, who had used Twitter, which is banned in China, to share childhood memories and rally international support for her, largely went silent. Many of his posts were later deleted. One of the lawyers who represented her has been barred from practicing law for his involvement in a different human rights case.

Asked about Ms. Zhang’s case at a regularly scheduled news briefing on Monday, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry said that he did not have information about her case, but that anyone who violated Chinese law should be punished.

In Ms. Zhang’s last video from Wuhan , where she described chatting with some out-of-work migrant workers, she pondered the usefulness of what she was doing.

“Actually, today I was very unsure what to say,” she said. “But these people, these things always push me to keep moving forward from hopelessness and fear, to keep paying attention to them and speaking for them just a little.”
