You can’t get your first finance internship with no experience, and you can’t get experience before landing a finance internship.

Many people have had to solve this age-old puzzle. I’ve also been there.

Through this article, I’m eager to offer industry insights on how to get a finance internship with no experience. I‘ll provide a roadmap with the main steps in becoming a finance intern to help you get started.

Table of Contents

Step 1: craft your finance intern resume and linkedin profile, step 2: proactively acquire desired skills, step 3: apply for multiple finance internships, step 4: ace your finance interview with effective preparation, internships for finance majors.

  • Submit Your Finance Internships Applications

Getting the fundamentals right is one of the most important steps when applying for your first finance internship. Your resume should top the list—ensuring it’s robust and excellently crafted.

Here are a few essential tips:

  • Eliminate all typos.
  • Select an attractive one-page layout.
  • Highlight achievements using active verbs.
  • Incorporate job-specific keywords and all pertinent skills.

Your primary aim is to craft a finance internship resume that effectively highlights your skills and qualifications. Seeking feedback from successfully employed peers can offer valuable insights. Be open to their suggestions and implement their advice diligently.

Once your finance intern resume is good to go, ensure you edit your LinkedIn profile. Add a professional photo, edit your headline, and describe your academic achievements and interests. Your finance internship recruiters will likely look you up on LinkedIn and social media, so you must proactively tidy up your online presence.

Review the job description before applying for finance internships and tailor your resume to include relevant keywords from the ad. This approach makes your resume ATS-friendly—meaning it’s optimized for the ‘applicant tracking system’ used by HR. It also increases the likelihood of capturing HR’s attention by showcasing the desired skills.

But what if you’re still developing a diverse skillset and finding it challenging to land an internship in finance?

When applying for a finance internship rather than a full-time position, employers prioritize rapidly learnable skills.

To apply for a financial analyst internship, ensure you have:

  • Excel proficiency
  • 3-statement modeling skills
  • Capital budgeting expertise

Proactively enrolling in the 365 Financial Analyst program and acquiring new skills will enhance your resume and boost your interview prospects.

Demonstrating flexibility, a willingness to learn, and creativity in problem-solving will undoubtedly assist you in securing your first internship.

The Standard Application Process

Previously, I feared I’d never land my initial finance internship or full-time role, feeling quite disheartened. So, I deeply empathize with this challenge. That’s why I’m keen to offer you both standard and unconventional (outside-the-box) strategies that enabled me to secure three finance internships, ultimately leading to my first position as a financial analyst.

You should explore company websites and stay aware of application deadlines in your area. For instance, many European companies offer summer and off-cycle finance internships . Understanding the publication timeline for these opportunities and the exact requirements for applying is crucial. This knowledge will significantly aid in planning your application strategy.

Pondering how to land a finance internship with no experience through the standard process? Consider these requirements:

  • A standout finance intern resume highlighting relevant skills and academic achievements
  • Proficiency in aptitude tests—often required by major companies
  • Strong interviewing capabilities

Finance Internships for College Freshman: Think Outside the Box

Sending standard applications can often feel like sowing seeds in infertile ground when no one responds. If that’s the case, try these proactive strategies.

Consider Startup Companies

Working with a startup is in vogue and significantly benefits your growth and resume. By applying to various startup ventures, you’ll likely secure a finance internship offer soon.

Such roles often come with flexibility—allowing you to craft compelling narratives for future paid, full-time finance internship jobs. Even a brief unpaid internship in finance of two to three months can provide your resume with the vital kickstart it needs, enabling you to gain crucial work experience.

Monitor University Job Boards

Consider monitoring your university’s job board for exclusive finance internships—particularly if your school has strong ties with industry employers. Companies often use these boards to strengthen their academic partnerships, offering exclusive opportunities directly to students. Yet, many students overlook this valuable resource, which would enhance their odds of securing an internship in finance.

Some of the best finance internships typically come from companies with proven track records and a long-standing relationship with some universities. Review the board regularly for appealing positions. This method is notably efficient, typically requiring just a finance internship resume and cover letter submission.

Resort to Cold Calling Only as a Last Measure

Finally, cold calling should be considered a last resort. This strategy is effective when other methods fail. Even without advertised openings, companies might still have opportunities. Offering your services for minimal compensation or even free could pique their interest.

Craft a concise, engaging finance internship cover letter in 100 words, attach your resume, and send it to 50 businesses and professionals on LinkedIn.

Enhance your prospects by following up with a phone call. Target organizations lacking structured hiring processes—such as private equity funds, boutique investment banks, small consulting firms, and public institutions.

With some luck, you’ll receive responses and secure interviews for various finance internships.

Securing a finance internship largely depends on your interview performance . Initially, interviews felt overwhelmingly stressful until I discovered a simple truth: preparation is key.

Thorough preparation—especially for behavioral, guesstimate, and situational questions—ensures success since most interviewers pose similar queries. Being well-prepared boosts your confidence, helping you excel and manage stress effectively.

Wondering how to get a finance internship with no experience? Numerous finance internships across various roles could set you on the path to your ideal career.

What should your finance intern cover letter look like - formatting and organizing your information

Have you ever wondered what are the must-have sections you need to include in your finance intern cover letter? Our builder sets those up for you with:

  • Header - dedicated to your contact information, the role you're applying for, and the date (don't forget to include your name);
  • Greeting and opening paragraph - to create a personalized and memorable experience for recruiters;
  • Body paragraph - emphasizing your skill set and knowledge that aligns with the role and helps you to stand out;
  • Closing paragraph - leaving a great impression and ending with an optional signature.

Use a cover letter template to discover the best formatting for your finance intern cover letter: that is single-spaced paragraphs and wrapping your content in a one-inch margin.

Ensure that both your resume and finance intern cover letter are in the same font . Stand apart from the crowd by using modern, yet simple fonts, like Chivo and Rubik, instead of the overused Arial and Times New Roman.

Did you know that the Applicant Tracker System (or ATS) won't be assessing your finance intern cover letter? Instead, submit your profile in PDF to recruiters to keep the same formatting and the design intact.

The top sections on a finance intern cover letter

  • Header: This includes your name, address, phone number, email, and the date, which ensures the recruiter knows who you are and how to contact you.
  • Greeting: Tailor this section with the hiring manager’s name to make your letter personal and demonstrate attention to detail, which is essential in finance.
  • Introduction: Briefly state your purpose for writing, your interest in the finance internship, and mention any pertinent previous experiences or studies to catch the recruiter’s interest.
  • Body: Highlight your skills relevant to financial analysis, understanding of financial software or systems, and any academic or practical achievements that show your competence for a finance role.
  • Closing and Signature: Politely express your enthusiasm for the potential to contribute to the team, and your availability for an interview, then formally close the letter with your signature to maintain professionalism.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Proficiency in financial modeling and analysis: Demonstrates an ability to understand complex financial scenarios and assists in making data-driven decisions.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles: Essential for accurate financial reporting and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Attention to detail: Ensures accuracy in financial transactions, data entry, and reporting, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of financial information.
  • Technical skills with finance software: Familiarity with programs such as Excel, QuickBooks, or other financial management tools is important for efficiency and effectiveness in daily tasks.
  • Analytical and critical thinking: Ability to dissect financial data and provide insightful recommendations for business improvements and strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills: Necessary for presenting financial information clearly to team members who may not have a finance background, and for contributing to collaborative projects.

What matters most when tailoring your finance intern cover letter salutation

Your finance intern cover letter greeting should feel welcoming to recruiters.

Use their first name (e.g. "Dear Marshall" or "Dear Sara"), if you've previously been in touch with the hiring manager and are on a more friendly basis.

If this is the first time you're contacting the recruiters, start your finance intern cover letter with:

  • their last name (e.g. "Dear Ms. Ali" or "Dear Mr. Stevens") - look up who's the hiring manager for the role on social media or the company website;
  • generalized greeting (e.g. "Dear HR Team") - just don't use "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam".

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Department Name] Hiring Committee,
  • Dear [Mr./Ms. Last Name],
  • Dear [Full Name],
  • Dear [Job Title] Search Committee,

Get creative with your finance intern cover letter introduction

Recruiters are going to assess plenty of candidate profiles for the role. Thus, anything you do to stand out will win you brownie points.

Use your finance intern cover letter introduction to share something memorable about your experience .

But before you go down the rabbit hole of creativity and humor, align your message with the company culture.

For example, if you are applying for a role in some startup, use those first two sentences to tell a funny story (about your experience) to quickly connect with the recruiter.

The middle or body of your finance intern cover letter body: a great instrument to tell a story

Now that you've set the right tone with the greeting and introduction of your finance intern cover letter, it's time to get down to business .

Hear us out, the body of your finance intern cover letter is the best storytelling instrument you have, in your job-hunting arsenal.

Writing the next three to six paragraphs, take the time to reassess the advert to discover job-crucial requirements.

Next, choose one accomplishment that covers those key skills and talents.

Use precisely that achievement to tell an exciting story of how you match the ideal candidate profile.

In the undertones of your story or finance intern cover letter body, hint at the difference you'd make and sell your application as the perfect one for the job.

Time to wrap up your finance intern cover letter

Writing the closing paragraph of your finance intern cover letter is just as important as the salutation.

You have to make it personalized to the job advert and recruiter.

Experienced professionals advise candidates to end with a request or reminder for follow-up. Write that you're grateful for the opportunity, and, at the same time, hint that you're available for the next steps of the process.

Otherwise, you could also conclude your finance intern cover letter by facing the future. How do you see yourself, as part of the team? In particular, how would you settle in your new role in the first six months to a year?

No experience finance intern cover letter: making the most out of your profile

Candidates who happen to have no professional experience use their finance intern cover letter to stand out.

Instead of focusing on a professional achievement, aim to quantify all the relevant, transferrable skills from your life experience.

Once again, the best practice to do so would be to select an accomplishment - from your whole career history.

Another option would be to plan out your career goals and objectives: how do you see yourself growing, as a professional, in the next five years, thanks to this opportunity?

Be precise and concise about your dreams, and align them with the company vision.

Key takeaways

Your finance intern cover letter is your best shot at standing out by showing your motivation and the unique skills you'd bring to the job:

  • Chose no more than one achievement, which you'd be talking about in the body of your finance intern cover letter, by focusing on skills and outcomes;
  • Address recruiters with their first or last name, or "Dear Hiring Manager" in your finance intern cover letter greeting;
  • Introduce in no more than two sentences what makes your profile unique (perhaps it's your motivation, enthusiasm, or appreciation of the company you're applying for);
  • Select the same font you have used in your resume (avoid Times New Roman and Arial, as most candidates tend to invest in them);
  • Close your finance intern cover letter with a promise of how you see yourself growing in the company and the benefits you'd bring about.

2. Salutation

The salutation should address the recruiter or hiring manager directly by full name and title, if possible. Generic salutations like “Dear Hiring Manager” are also acceptable when specifics are unavailable. Personalization signals attentiveness, so attempt to confirm names or titles before sending your cover letter.

3. Introduction

Sending an Email Cover Letter

If you are an undergraduate applying for an internship in the finance industry, you'll likely need to write a  cover letter .

This part of your internship application should be customized to the specific role. Your cover letter is an opportunity to stand out in a positive way from other applicants.

Find out what information to include in your letter, review a sample, and get advice on the best way to send it to prospective employers.

What to Include in a Finance Internship Cover Letter

Include the details.

Cover letters follow a very specific format. The first paragraph should mention the internship you hope to get. Many financial companies have large-scale internship programs, with opportunities ranging across departments and divisions.

Specifics help as well, so mention the name of your school if you are an undergrad or in graduate school.

If you have a personal connection—for instance, if you know someone at the company or met the recruiter at a job fair—be sure to mention it in the first paragraph.

Share Relevant Experience

In the body of your email, include details on relevant coursework or projects, as well as previous finance-related work experience, volunteer positions, or prior internships.

What to Include When You're Short on Experience

If this is your first internship, you may feel like you don't have any relevant experience to highlight. If that's the case, look for the qualities and responsibilities mentioned in the internship description, and come up with examples of how you've demonstrated those abilities in the past. Time spent volunteering and extracurricular activities can all be valuable here.

Read through the internship description carefully and make sure to connect your experience with the responsibilities and qualifications laid out.

Explain Why You're a Fit for the Role

Your letter should demonstrate your familiarity with the company and its goals, and make it clear why you would be a good candidate for the internship.

Tips for Writing Your Cover Letter

Your goal in this cover letter is to show that you're a strong candidate for the finance internship. That means writing persuasively, and also paying attention to the details. Keep these tips in mind as you craft your cover letter:

  • Pay attention to formatting:  Follow the appropriate cover letter format, from choosing the right font to making sure you include all the required elements.
  • Pay attention to the internship description:  The company's write-up of the internship offers valuable information. Take some time to read through it, and consider jotting down some notes about the company's priorities. Then, use these insights within your cover letter. For instance, if the company mentions looking for an Excel wizard, you can describe a project you've worked on or mention a class you've taken on using the program. A targeted cover letter will outperform a generic letter.
  • Proofread your letter carefully:  Even small errors, such as misspelling the company name, diminish the strength of your application, so take the time to  proofread  before hitting send.

Take a look at an example of a cover letter written for a finance internship program. Don't copy it exactly. Instead, use this text for inspiration when writing your own cover letter.

Dear Mr./Ms. LastName:

Through ABC Financial Group's website, I learned about your bank's present career opportunities.

I am extremely interested in securing a position in the ABC Financial Group's Global Equity Summer Internship Program.

I am currently in my second year at the Smith Business School of the State University and am concentrating on finance, accounting, and real estate. Over the summer, I completed an internship with First National Bank. I am currently interning with the University's Student Federal Credit Union.

My experiences have provided me with a detailed knowledge of financial institutions and have enhanced my interest in pursuing a financial career. I feel that an internship with ABC Financial Group would be a logical next step in my development as an investment banker.

My main interest in joining ABC Financial Group stems from its impressive reputation. The prestige of the firm is best captured through its recent decoration as "America's Most Trusted Corporation" for the second consecutive year. I feel the firm's diverse clientele, large market capitalization, and well-established summer internship program would provide me with an invaluable experience to complement my studies at Business School.

I believe that I would succeed in the firm's exciting and motivated environment and that my strong work ethic, ability, and passion would make me a valuable asset to your firm.

I would prefer to work in global equity. However, I am willing to consider any position that you offer me. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to speaking with you in the near future.

Your Typed Name

If you are sending your cover letter via email, list your name and the job title in the subject line of the email message:

Subject:  Finance Internship—Your Name

Include your contact information in your  email signature , and do not list the employer contact information or the date. Instead, begin your email message with the salutation. Aside from these relatively minor differences, an email cover letter is very similar to a printed-out version. The body of your email, from salutation to sign off, will remain the same.

Finance Intern Cover Letter Example (Full Text Version)

Julius Malema

Dear Mr. Rick Morty,

I am applying for the financial analyst position at the Charleston International Airport. I found out about CIA through my fiancé, who is a TA in the Financial Department. I believe I am a wonderful fit for the culture, work environment, and values espoused by Charleston International Airport. My skills in finance can help this organization improve functionally, thus, allowing for an even greater focus on improving the human condition and educating world-class leaders.

Currently I am earning my BBA in Financial Management at Charleston Southern University in Charleston, SC. My desire is to put my skills and knowledge to use in a professional environment. I am in the Honors program and I am set to graduate with a 3.96 cumulative GPA and will be the recipient of the CSU School of Business Outstanding Graduate in Finance award. While I have been taking classes, I have also been interning with finance department for the Charleston County Aviation Authority. Through my internship I have gained finance experience, including working in accounts payable and receivable, handling CRM Reports, balancing credit card charges, reconciling bank statements, and logging remittance reports. I am very proficient with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access. I applied this knowledge in a business plan competition at CSU. My team placed earned first place; I primarily handled the financial statements for that project. While at CSU, I have also started an on-campus muffin delivery business (Sophomore year). I called it "Moufflet" and earned several hundred dollars of net income during the first two months of operation.

Just so you know a little bit more about me, I started my own podcast, which I call "Third Culture Journey." It is geared towards people who grew up overseas (like I did) or who are in a transition phase of life. I travel often during summers and have visited many countries, including: Ukraine, England, Israel, Spain, Canada, Armenia, Iceland, and Senegal. I have been to over twenty countries and hope to continue learning about (and seeing) the world.  I believe travel broadens my worldview and helps me understand people better. Most of the trips I was on were work-related. I helped build a well; I translated for various teams; I assisted in renovating buildings; and I also helped lead at many different camps. I try and lead whenever I can to get more experience. I was the student body president at my High School, as well as the yearbook editor. At CSU I have served as a student government senator and as Chairman for the Judiciary Committee, as well as the Master-at-Arms. I used my knowledge in finance to write a bill about restructuring the tax system. It was passed through the SC Student Legislature, and was then sent to actual SC Legislature. With my experience and knowledge, my hope is to work for an organization like Hylant, with ideals and goals congruent with my own.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter; I look forward to hearing back from you. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, and thank you so much for much for your consideration.
