I’ve searched the RWE.org database without luck and did a text search through over 1100 pages of his essays. I believe this is a misattribution. Any insight you have into the lineage of this quote would be much appreciated.

Reply from Quote Investigator: An exact match for the expression above has not been found in the oeuvre of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Yet, Emerson did write a thematically related remark: 1

To finish the moment, to find the journey’s end in every step of the road, to live the greatest number of good hours, is wisdom.

This sentence suggested a psychological vantage point in which the intermediate advances of the journey were representative of the completion of the journey. This is arguably a distinct statement from the questioner’s saying which is listed in “The Dictionary of Modern Proverbs” without attachment to a specific person. 2

The earliest close match located by QI appeared in 1920 in a periodical called “The Christian Advocate”. The phrase was used by the theologian Lynn H. Hough within his outline for a Sunday School Lesson discussing a letter from Simon Peter. Bold face has been added to the phrase here and some phrases below: 3

He wanted his friends to realize that life is a journey and not a destination ; that the heart must be set upon those matters of character which are eternal and not upon those matters of sensation which pass away.

Interesting precursors of the expression were in circulation in the previous century. In 1854 “The Sunday at Home: A Family Magazine for Sabbath Reading” printed a “Page for the Young” with the following advice: 4

You should learn in early youth that your life is a journey, not a rest . You are travelling to the promised land, from the cradle to the grave.

In 1855 another religious text used a variant phrase and provided an explanation: 5

All life is a journey, not a home ; it is a road, not the country; and those transient enjoyments which you have in this life, lawful in their way,—those incidental and evanescent pleasures which you may sip,—are not home; they are little inns only upon the road-side of life, where you are refreshed for a moment, that you may take again the pilgrim-staff and journey on, seeking what is still before you—the rest that remaineth for the people of God.

A decade later the passage above was reprinted in a collection entitled “A Cyclopaedia of Illustrations of Moral and Religious Truths”; however, it was labeled ANON. 6

In 1920 “ life is a journey and not a destination ” was written in a book by the pastor Lynn H. Hough as discussed previously in this article.

In 1922 another variant of the saying was printed which emphasized an experiential theme instead of a religious one: 7

But we stupid mortals, or most of us, are always in haste to reach somewhere else, forgetting that the zest is in the journey and not in the destination .

In 1926 the trope was applied to the domain of love within a verse using eccentric capitalization: 8

LOVE To SOME men Is NOT a DESTINATION. It is just A FLIGHT OF FANCY . A RUSHING EMOTION between BUSINESS and AMBITION that Keeps them FOREVER ON THE HOP.

In 1929 an essay by a high school student employed a version of the saying with the word “success”. The words were enclosed in quotation marks suggesting that the adage was already in circulation: 9

You know, “ success is not a destination, but a journey .”

Yet another variant of the expression was in circulation by 1930: 10

Prof J. C. Archer of Yale University will speak on “ Religion a Journey and Not a Destination ” at the monthly “church night” gathering at Memorial church tomorrow night.

In 1935 a story in the Cleveland Plain Dealer presented a variant: 11

“Helen, somebody has said that happiness is a journey—not a destination . You have it as you go along. You’ve been very happy with two different people.

In 1936 the book “I Knew Them in Prison” by Mary B. Harris invoked two versions 12 of the adage at once: 13

Reformation, like education, is a journey, not a destination.

In 1937 another instance of the maxim about education was printed in a California newspaper: 14

Reporting on education, Mrs. S. G. Stooke said that education is a journey and not a destination , for we must keep developing.

In 1993 the rock band Aerosmith released the song Amazing as a single. The lyrics were written by Steven Tyler and Richie Supa, and they included an instance of the saying: 15

Life’s a journey not a destination And I just can’t tell just what tomorrow brings

In the 2006 movie “Peaceful Warrior” a character named Dan Millman was led on a three-hour trek to a remote location by his mentor, a character named ‘Socrates’ who embodied a wise man archetype. Millman was excited and happy during the trip because he expected to be shown something important and when he was shown a non-descript rock he was initially disappointed. But after reflection Millman said the following to Socrates: 16

Dan Millman: The journey… the journey is what brings us happiness… not the destination

ABC NEWS LIVE: Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan three years ago, life for women has once again become much more difficult. But since she was very young, Zarifa Adiba has always had a plan and plenty of ambition to live freely.

In her new book, "Playing for Freedom: The Journey of a Young Afghan Girl," she tells the remarkable, nearly decadelong voyage that has led her ultimately to America. Zarifa, it's so good to have you in our studio. Thank you so much for coming.

I understand that you grew up very poor in Afghanistan. What ultimately got you here? I know there was a lot of drive, a lot of ambition, but what makes you different, perhaps, from other young Afghan girls?

ADIBA: Thank you for having me here. I don't think anything makes me different than other Afghan girls. I feel every Afghan girl has a lot of ambition, dreams, and they are very courageous. But what made me, made me luckier, was music.

I had a different kind of passion for music, and I, I was like: it is music or nothing. So I went for music, and music opened many other doors for me.

ABC NEWS LIVE: So you picked up the viola, feverishly began playing. You end up joining the Afghanistan National Institute of Music and ultimately start conducting, as co-conductor of the Afghan Women's Orchestra. Wanted to take a look at a clip from you performing at just 18 years old in Davos, Switzerland, where -- it's just beautiful to listen to you.

You say that this gave you the reputation back at home as a bad girl. What happened when you returned back?

ADIBA: So nobody knew that I'm a musician. And, it was a risk to perform at the World Economic Forum. A risk that I took it from the very beginning when I started playing my first notes. I feel like, Afghanistan, my beautiful homeland, has been at war for several decades and war usually destroys culture, education, system, traditions. It destroys everything.

And partially it had destroyed music, too; music's reputation. Music was very hard, even for boys. Let's not even talk about girls, because it was just, it was just not easy. Today, girls are not allowed to go to school. Just imagine that. How would it be to play music and hold a viola? Everything that I used to do, I think was making me a bad girl.

And in my country, a good girl is the one who does what society decides for them and, for me, I always have been the one deciding for myself whether it was music, whether it was having my hair out, or, traveling abroad or, studying English or having the dream to go to Harvard. Whatever dream I used to have, I was deciding them for myself.

ABC NEWS LIVE: What do you think about what's happening in your homeland in Afghanistan today?

ADIBA: To be honest, I'm heartbroken what is happening to my homeland. We could change a lot in Afghanistan, but everyone left us and, the Taliban, who have killed my friends, I cannot forgive them.

But the entire world just gave it up again to them. But today, after three years, now, sometimes I sit and I think I'm like, I wish, I wish I could just hold all the girls and women of Afghanistan out of that country. I wish there was another land.

We could put all the women and girls there and leave the entire country to the men and the politicians and be like, OK, fight now. Do whatever you want to do with with that land, right? But it's not like that.

If it's education, it is banned for girls. If it's music, it's banned. If it is work, not for women. If it is anything, all the politics, all their rules and regulations, everything is on women. And, all of those things. I'm just, I'm just heartbroken, and, I just hope that it change.

The ornament ran the Dalston Derby, a remote-control car race the couple organised to celebrate Mike’s 30th birthday in 2011. “Before we started making art together and selling pieces of furniture, we put on events like these,” Jewlsy explains. “The pace at which Mike comes up with ideas is dizzying and he actually brings them to fruition.” Combined with a pub crawl, the Dalston Derby ran for four years.

These activities began to wind down when the couple’s son Milo, now nine, was born. “Our life used to be very outward-facing, but when he arrived we started to spend more time indoors,” Jewlsy says. She owned the two-bedroom second-floor flat in London’s King’s Cross before meeting Mike, who moved in in 2012.

After the arrival of Milo they split the larger of two bedrooms in two with one of the new spaces serving as an office for their new architecture studio. The other is their son’s room, a calm, yet playful space. “We designed and built the bed, deliberately choosing atypical awkward dimensions for the steps,” Jewlsy explains. “Children stretch their limbs in a way that adults don’t, jumping down three steps at a time, so it made more sense than using standard half stair-height steps.”

Made from birch plywood, the bed also features built-in shutters that can be opened and closed for privacy. The upper half of the room, designated as the sleeping zone, has been painted in Little Greene Aquamarine Mid , with the lower dado, the play area, in Little Greene Tea with Florence . The gloss finish helps reflect light around the room. In their own bedroom, lights bought from Jewlsy’s ancestral home, Kerala, feature the kind of geometrical shapes that Mike is passionate about and which are reflected throughout the property. “You can also find CNC geometric patterns on the fronts of the wardrobes that we made,” he says.

The couple’s own bed adopts the form of an inverted pyramid, which they designed to be space-saving, with the base sections neatly sliding out to provide further storage.

Back in the living area, another of the couple’s built-in furniture projects is a Mondrian-inspired nook, which serves as seating and storage space. It’s a private retreat that all friends and family enjoy, and each section has been configured to contain useful household items such as an ironing board. “I adore sitting there and having a cup of coffee looking out at the balconies,” Jewlsy says. It’s easy to understand why, with the space opening out on to a verdant oasis that’s been 10 years in the making. Dubbed a “junglette” balcony, the outdoor space is impressive and features a naturally filtered pond that oxygenates and cleans itself: “We just need to feed the fish,” Jewlsy says.“And if it gets really cold, we add a tennis ball in there, which stops it from freezing over.” Mike adds Jewlsy says. Mike adds, “I love gardening and we have 80 different species out there. They provide a good buffer and keep the apartment cooler in the summer with solar shading.”

Opposite this nook area is the more communal space with a sofa made from 40mm thick Dinesen Douglas fir. It sits on concrete legs that were cast in recycled rainwater pipes. It was upholstered by Jewlsy using fabric they bought from India and is complemented by the coffee table they’ve crafted from the same wood, but set atop undulating cork legs.

The seating is modular: “We realised that we’ve been creating furniture that’s built-in and if we ever decided to leave, we wouldn’t be able to take it with us,” says Jewlsy. The chairs were made after the couple had finished one of the most time-consuming projects in the property, their kitchen revamp. “I absolutely love cooking and we had a tiny kitchen, which was awful,” says Jewlsy. The space is bigger now with hidden appliances and design features that help them maintain a clutter-free zone. Smart additions include a Finnish drying rack which is great for keeping Tupperware hidden away, and dropdown plug sockets from Evoline . “We have exceedingly tactile porcelain tiles by Vicalvi . They were made by pressing folded paper in the porcelain to imprint the pattern on the tile backsplash and we didn’t want to break them up with electrical outlets,” says Jewsly.

The framework for the new kitchen is made from concrete they cast in their dining room. “I did a lot of research before we made it as it is a one-way journey and if you mess it up, you’re stuck,” Mike explains. “We created our own shutterwork [a wooden frame to pour the concrete into] using waste timber panelling from a previous scheme.” The concrete frame was sanded to produce a polished finish and then left to cure for three-four months. Whitewashed spruce timber cabinet doors soften the utilitarian material for a neutral pared-back look.

Repurposed materials from the kitchen were used in the bathroom, with timber offcuts made into panelling. Mike and Jewlsy have made a conscious effort to maximise what is already there. “With the effects of climate change, designers have to be clever – we can’t just rip everything out,” says Mike. “So we used tile paint to refresh the space.”

Inspired by the natural fractal geometry of an unfurling fern, the Unfurl dining chairs are sculptural but also structurally sound. “We made a model first to make sure the chair would actually stand,” says Mike. “It is based on the way a person sits and curves so that a person can sit comfortably.”

The spaces Mike and Jewlsy have designed for their family home consider the user first – and this usefulness makes their efforts all the more beautiful.

Isle of wonder: just off the coast of Sicily is an archipelago steeped in myths

O n the boat, I stared out to sea thinking about maps and getting lost, about imaginary islands and the places where geography and mythology collide. I was on my way to a mystical archipelago of islands just off Sicily , supposedly the real-life inspiration for the fantastical islands of The Odyssey .

I hadn’t planned to be chasing Odysseus around his island sea kingdoms and searching for mythical lands but my heart had been broken in various ways and I was sorely in need of grey-eyed, gold-shod Athena, Aeolus who rules the winds and all of the trickster gods, to be spun into their drama. To become enchanted.

Like Odysseus, my journey stretched out far longer than I expected. And just like him, I met an eccentric cast list of characters on the way: a sex therapist, Naked Andrew, a 70-year-old enthusiastic nudist, and a Menorcan ornithologist.

Joseph Epstein, conservative provocateur, tells his life story in full

In two new books, the longtime essayist and culture warrior shows off his wry observations about himself and the world

Humorous, common-sensical, temperamentally conservative, Joseph Epstein may be the best familiar — that is casual, personal — essayist of the last half-century. Not, as he might point out, that there’s a lot of competition. Though occasionally a scourge of modern society’s errancies, Epstein sees himself as essentially a serious reader and “a hedonist of the intellect.” His writing is playful and bookish, the reflections of a wry observer alternately amused and appalled by the world’s never-ending carnival.

Now 87, Epstein has just published his autobiography, “ Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life: Especially if You’ve Had a Lucky Life ,” in tandem with “ Familiarity Breeds Content: New and Selected Essays .” This pair of books brings the Epstein oeuvre up to around 30 volumes of sophisticated literary entertainment. While there are some short-story collections (“The Goldin Boys,” “Fabulous Small Jews”), all the other books focus on writers, observations on American life, and topics as various as ambition, envy, snobbery, friendship, charm and gossip. For the record, let me add that I own 14 volumes of Epstein’s views and reviews and would like to own them all.

Little wonder, then, that Epstein’s idea of a good time is an afternoon spent hunched over Herodotus’s “Histories,” Marguerite Yourcenar’s “Memoirs of Hadrian” or almost anything by Henry James, with an occasional break to enjoy the latest issue of one of the magazines he subscribes to. In his younger days, there were as many as 25, and most of them probably featured Epstein’s literary journalism at one time or another. In the case of Commentary, he has been contributing pieces for more than 60 years.

As Epstein tells it, no one would have predicted this sort of intellectual life for a kid from Chicago whose main interests while growing up were sports, hanging out, smoking Lucky Strikes and sex. A lackadaisical C student, Myron Joseph Epstein placed 169th in a high school graduating class of 213. Still, he did go on to college — the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign — because that’s what was expected of a son from an upper-middle-class Jewish family. But Urbana-Champaign wasn’t a good fit for a jokester and slacker: As he points out, the president of his college fraternity “had all the playfulness of a member of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers.” No matter. Caught peddling stolen copies of an upcoming accounting exam for $5 a pop, Epstein was summarily expelled.

Fortunately, our lad had already applied for a transfer to the University of Chicago, to which he was admitted the next fall. Given his record, this shows a surprising laxity of standards by that distinguished institution, but for Epstein the move was life-changing. In short order, he underwent a spiritual conversion from good ol’ boy to European intellectual in the making. In the years to come, he would count the novelist Saul Bellow and the sociologist Edward Shils among his close friends, edit the American Scholar, and teach at Northwestern University. His students, he recalls, were “good at school, a skill without any necessary carry-over, like being good at pole-vaulting or playing the harmonica.”

Note the edge to that remark. While “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life” is nostalgia-laden, there’s a hard nut at its center. Epstein feels utter contempt for our nation’s “radical change from a traditionally moral culture to a therapeutic one.” As he explains: “Our parents’ culture and that which came long before them was about the formation of character; the therapeutic culture was about achieving happiness. The former was about courage and honor, the latter about self-esteem and freedom from stress.” This view of America’s current ethos may come across as curmudgeonly and reductionist, but many readers — whatever their political and cultural leanings — would agree with it. Still, such comments have sometimes made their author the focus of nearly histrionic vilification.

Throughout his autobiography, this lifelong Chicagoan seems able to remember the full names of everyone he’s ever met, which suggests Epstein started keeping a journal at an early age. He forthrightly despises several older writers rather similar to himself, calling Clifton Fadiman, author of “The Lifetime Reading Plan,” pretentious, then quite cruelly comparing Mortimer J. Adler, general editor of the “Great Books of the Western World” series, with Sir William Haley, one of those deft, widely read English journalists who make all Americans feel provincial. To Epstein, “no two men were more unalike; Sir William, modest, suave, intellectually sophisticated; Mortimer vain, coarse, intellectually crude.” In effect, Fadiman and Adler are both presented as cultural snake-oil salesmen. Of course, both authors were popularizers and adept at marketing their work, but helping to enrich the intellectual lives of ordinary people doesn’t strike me as an ignoble purpose.

In his own work, Epstein regularly employs humor, bits of slang or wordplay, and brief anecdotes to keep his readers smiling. For instance, in a chapter about an editorial stint at the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Epstein relates this story about a colleague named Martin Self:

“During those days, when anti-Vietnam War protests were rife, a young woman in the office wearing a protester’s black armband, asked Martin if he were going to that afternoon’s protest march. ‘No, Naomi,’ he said, ‘afternoons such as this I generally spend at the graveside of George Santayana.’”

Learned wit, no doubt, but everything — syntax, diction, the choice of the philosopher Santayana for reverence — is just perfect.

But Epstein can be earthier, too. Another colleague “was a skirt-chaser extraordinaire," a man "you would not feel safe leaving alone with your great-grandmother.” And of himself, he declares: “I don’t for a moment wish to give the impression that I live unrelievedly on the highbrow level of culture. I live there with a great deal of relief.”

In his many essays, including the sampling in “Familiarity Breeds Content,” Epstein is also markedly “quotacious,” often citing passages from his wide reading to add authority to an argument or simply to share his pleasure in a well-turned observation. Oddly enough, such borrowed finery is largely absent from “Never Say You’ve Had a Happy Life.” One partial exception might be the unpronounceable adjective “immitigable,” which appears all too often. It means unable to be mitigated or softened, and Epstein almost certainly stole it from his friend Shils, who was fond of the word.

Despite his autobiography’s jaunty title, Epstein has seen his share of trouble. As a young man working for an anti-poverty program in Little Rock, he married a waitress after she became pregnant with his child. When they separated a decade later, he found himself with four sons to care for — two from her previous marriage, two from theirs. Burt, the youngest, lost an eye in an accident while a toddler, couldn’t keep a job, fathered a child out of wedlock and eventually died of an opioid overdose at 28. Initially hesitant, Epstein came to adore Burt’s daughter, Annabelle, as did his second wife, Barbara, whom he married when they were both just past 40.

Some pages of “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life” will be familiar to inveterate readers of Epstein’s literary journalism, all of which carries a strong first-person vibe. Not surprisingly, however, the recycled anecdotage feels less sharp or witty the second time around. But overall, this look back over a long life is consistently entertaining, certainly more page-turner than page-stopper. To enjoy Epstein at his very best, though, you should seek out his earlier essay collections such as “The Middle of My Tether,” “Partial Payments” and “A Line Out for a Walk.” Whether he writes about napping or name-dropping or a neglected writer such as Somerset Maugham, his real subject is always, at heart, the wonder and strangeness of human nature.
