Here are our top tips to help you write your cover letter for the role of Student Ambassador.

Plan: Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to plan, draft, proof and finalise your cover letter.

What are we looking for in your cover letter? We are trying to understand how you meet our essential and desirable criteria, therefore when answering the questions make sure you are writing how you meet each criteria. This is our first interaction with you, so make sure your cover letter stands out. We are looking for quality over quantity,  examples are the key. The cover letter should be no more than one side of A4

Use Examples: When you are showing us how you meet the criteria, back up your statements with examples, this can be previous work experience, clubs and societies, group assessment, and previous education experiences etc.

Use the STAR technique to help structure your answer – this is also a really good structure to use if you are successful to interview when providing us answers.

  • Situation: Briefly describe the context of the situation
  • Task: Explain the task that had to be completed
  • Action: What actions did you take to ensure the task was complete
  • Result: If possible what the outcome was and why your actions benefited the situation.

Using AI: We have seen an increase in use of AI in applications, AI can help provide an initial structure and ideas for applications, but it means that the cover letters look very similar and aren’t showcasing what you can bring to the role and make you stand out from all our other applications (300+).  The information you provide in the cover letter must be true and authentic. No Template — No Problem

Before we dive into what exactly international students should do to write the best cover letter, let’s explore why cover letters are so important — and why using a template will set back anyone, whether you’re a college student from the US or not.

According to Tatiana, the cover letter is the bridge between your resume and the job description.

Think of it like this: The recruiter who gets your resume will definitely read it. But they’ll only spend about one minute doing so. (By the way, that’s also why your resume should be as clear as possible and focused around effectively written bullet points — but that’s a topic for another day.)

That means that a recruiter will probably never get all the information they need to say whether you’re a good candidate or not just from your resume. They probably need more information, and they definitely need information that’s tailored to the specific role to which you’ve applied.

And that’s where the cover letter comes in, and why it’s so important.

Your Letter Helps You Help the Recruiter

As Tatiana puts it above, the task of the recruiter is to match the information they have about you to the list of requirements for the job to which you’ve applied. It’s almost as if they’re trying to check off boxes on a list. For example: Do you know skill X? Have you done task Y? Or did you take class Z?

Wherever your resume doesn’t check a box on that list of requirements, you need your cover letter to check it instead. And even if your resume already lists some of the information the recruiter needs, you can use your cover letter to re-state it. That way, you make absolutely sure it doesn’t get missed.

Most of the time however, you won’t naturally fulfill all the requirements for a position. After all, there often isn’t anyone who will. In general, job descriptions are written with an ideal candidate in mind that may or may not exist in the real world.

Recruiters and employers understand this, and they know that not every candidate will fit their stated requirements absolutely 100%.

That’s another reason you shouldn’t use a cover letter template. Instead, you should use a different cover letter for each application to explain how your unique experience relates to the position you want.

You’re Unique, and That’s Why Your Cover Letter Should Be Too

Imagine a situation where your experience experience doesn’t perfectly align with what the recruiter is looking for. As Tatiana’s mentions in the video, perhaps they’re asking for several years of experience, which you might not have. But you might have several internships that add up to more or less that amount of experience.

Your cover letter is the right place for you to explain this.

Or alternatively, perhaps you’re applying for a position that requires a particular skill, such as knowledge of the programming language Python. You might not know Python — but perhaps you’re great at a different programming language and are actually learning Python in your free time.

Use your cover letter to make this clear.

Every Company is Different

You also need to use the cover letter to show your interest in and knowledge of your potential future employer, as Tatiana also says. You don’t have to go into too many details. But you might want to mention news related to the company that link to your profile or interests.

You could also mention whether you’ve spoken with anyone at the company, and how that conversation has sparked your interest in a unique way.

Clearly, this is not material you can cut and paste from one cover letter to another. You’ll have to write this again for every company. Only then will your interest seem genuine, and only then will it truly help your cover letter to stand out.

For one company, in one cover letter, you might talk about an event they held and that you attended. For another company, in another cover letter, you might instead refer to a course you’ve taken in college that relates to a piece of news about the organization.

Don’t Fall Into the Template Trap

Ultimately, templates are dangerous because you’re not the same as everyone else. And the job and company you’re applying to are different from all the others, too.

So make sure that you use the cover letter to your advantage. Don’t send the recruiter something generic that might as well apply to any other company or position.

That way, you make sure the recruiter has all the information they need to bridge the gap between your resume and the job description, and that they need to see you’re genuinely, uniquely interested and qualified.

And even though it takes time to write a different cover letter for each application, that’s also why that time is well spent, as Tatiana emphasizes. Whether you’re an international student or not.

The value of a well-drafted, customized cover letter is often underestimated by international students. A cover letter that tells your story and conveys your passion can help you stand out among equally qualified candidates and land a job. Here are some tips to help you craft an effective cover letter that will resonate with Canadian employers:

Follow a formal business letter format

Using an appropriate cover letter format will help ensure that the first impression you make on the hiring manager is a professional one. A formal business letter format includes the recipient’s name, company address, subject line, date, and a formal greeting and closing. A Canadian-style cover letter should include a call to action, such as inviting the hiring manager to contact you for more information or discuss your candidature further over an interview. 

Personalize your cover letter

You should address your cover letter to the hiring manager or recruiter (you can usually find their name in the job posting or on LinkedIn ). Avoid opening your cover letter with a generic salutation like “To whom it may concern” or “Dear sir or madam.” Addressing it to an actual person shows you’ve done your research and helps build that initial connection.

Don’t rewrite information already in your resume  

Think of your cover letter as precious extra space you can use to draw attention to skills, strengths, and qualifications that make you a good candidate for the job. Instead of reiterating what’s already in your resume, highlight one or two specific accomplishments that relate to the role you’re applying for. 

As an international student, you can also elaborate on how the learnings from your study program will help you in this role. Having recently completed your education can work to your advantage if you can demonstrate that your up-to-date technical skills can help a team or company evolve and keep up with market trends.

Customize your cover letter to the role

While your cover letter is your chance to tell your unique story, it’s best not to stray from what the employer seeks. Many Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) also scan cover letters, so your cover letter should include relevant keywords from the job description. Essentially, an employer wants to know if you are a good fit for the role, so make sure your highlighted strengths align with the role.

Focus on relevant transferable skills

As an international student, your relevant Canadian work experience may be limited. However, you may have acquired several transferable skills during the course of your studies and non-professional experience that can’t be adequately explained on your resume. Use your cover letter to draw connections between your transferable skills and how they’ll help you add value to this role.

For example, if you worked part-time as a barista or server, you may have picked up valuable customer service and time management skills. If you were the president of a student club, your leadership skills may give you an edge over other applicants for the job.

Highlight what makes you unique

The main objective of your cover letter is to help you stand out from the crowd. As an international student, the experience, education, and exposure you received in your home country may help you bring a fresh perspective to a Canadian organization. 

For instance, you may be knowledgeable about the work culture in other markets outside Canada, more adaptable to cultural diversity, or fluent in multiple languages. If you were part of your family business at home or worked for a few years before moving to Canada to study, you may have developed people management skills, relevant technical skills or an entrepreneurial spirit that’ll be useful in the role you’re targeting.

Focus on why you want to work for a specific company 

It’s important to articulate why you want to work for a particular company . Where possible, try to weave the information you know about the company and their work in your cover letter. This shows the hiring manager that you’re familiar with the company’s business and are invested in its success. Perhaps the organization is known for its technical expertise. Maybe you’ve used (and love) their products or find the company’s vision inspiring. Use your cover letter to express why you are passionate about the organization and role. 

Don’t list your references or share personal information

Although most Canadian employers conduct reference checks before hiring an employee, you should not include the names and contact information of your references in a Canadian-style cover letter or resume . If needed, the employer will ask you for this information after they’ve selected you for the position. You are also not supposed to include a photograph or personal information, such as your gender, sexual orientation, race, or marital status in your cover letter.

Keep your cover letter to one page 

Similar to your resume, it’s best to keep your cover letter short and to the point. Feel free to show off more of your personality, but within the confines of what we covered above.

Proofread your cover letter

Always proofread your cover letter before submitting it. Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors can draw the recruiter’s attention away from your achievements and cast doubts on your attention to detail and language skills. It’s also a good idea to have a friend or mentor review your cover letter to make sure it conveys the intended message in a crisp, logical, and impressive way. Also double-check the hiring manager’s name, the company details, as well as your contact information, so the employer can easily reach you if you’re shortlisted for an interview.

As an international student looking for part-time or full-time jobs in Canada, you should familiarize yourself with a Canadian-style cover letter before your job search. A customized cover letter gives you an opportunity to highlight your strengths and achievements and make a strong case for why the organization should hire you.

Student Ambassador, Domestic Recruitment-University Relations, Cape Breton University

Reporting to:   Domestic Recruitment Team

CBU (Cape Breton University) Student Ambassadors are student representatives and brand ambassadors for Cape Breton University. As a student ambassador, you will have the opportunity to work closely with the Domestic Recruitment Team both in the office and off campus for local recruitment initiatives and events. This position will work closely with our staff in the CIBC Student Welcome Centre. Student ambassadors can obtain up to 30 hours a week, but these hours will fluctuate week to week depending on the needs of the department. Student class schedules will, however, be taken into consideration when scheduling shifts.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILTIES

Campus Tours

Student Ambassadors lead and schedule Campus Tours. As a campus tour lead, you would show potential students and their supporters around the CBU campus. Tours consist of both one on one and large groups.

Administrative Tasks

Responsibilities would include but are not limited to, answering inquiries via phone, helping with administrative tasks, logging swag inventory, supporting the Ambassador Platform, managing and answering inquiries from prospective students, and responding to email inquiries regarding CBU program offerings.

Events and Student Recruitment

Help with planning and execution of all on campus events hosted by Domestic Recruitment along with attending many on campus events hosted by other departments. Student Ambassadors would also attend recruitment events with our recruiters in the community and at local schools.

QUALIFICATIONS

· Must be enrolled at Cape Breton University and in good academic standing

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

· Ability to work in a team environment and maintain a good working relationship with other ambassadors and university employees

· Good judgement skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality

· Feel capable speaking positively about your own CBU student experience

· Ability to work non-traditional working hours

· Must have a valid driver’s license

· Must be familiar with all popular social media platforms

· Comfortability speaking in front of small groups

HOURS: Up to 30 hrs a week

Terry Carter, Barrier-Breaking Actor and Documentarian, Dies at 95

He was the only Black actor on “Combat!” and “The Phil Silvers Show,” then made well regarded documentaries on luminaries like Duke Ellington and Katherine Dunham.

Terry Carter, who broke color barriers onstage and on television in the 1950s and ’60s and later produced multicultural documentaries on the jazz luminary Duke Ellington and the dancer-choreographer Katherine Dunham, died on Tuesday at his home in Midtown Manhattan. He was 95.

His death was confirmed by his son, Miguel Carter DeCoste.

Mr. Carter was raised in a bilingual home next door to a synagogue in a predominantly Italian neighborhood in Brooklyn. His best friend was the future jazz great Cecil Taylor . In his first stage role, at 9, Mr. Carter played the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama on a voyage of discovery.

And in a wayfaring six-decade career, he was a merchant seaman, a jazz pianist, a law student, a television news anchor, a familiar character on network sitcoms, an Emmy-winning documentarian, a good will ambassador to China, a longtime expatriate in Europe — and a reported dead man; in 2015, rumors that he had been killed were mistaken. It was not him but a much younger Terry Carter who had died in a hit-and-run accident in Los Angeles by a pickup truck driven by the rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight.

Slightly misquoting Mark Twain, Mr. Carter posted on social media: “Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

While he acted in some 30 television series and movies, Mr. Carter was best known to viewers as Sgt. Joe Broadhurst, the sidekick to Deputy Marshal Sam McCloud (Dennis Weaver) on NBC’s “McCloud” series from 1970 to 1977, and in 21 episodes of “Battlestar Galactica,” as Colonel Tigh, second-in-command of the starship fleet in ABC’s original science-fiction series in 1978-79. (The series was revived for a second run from 2004 to 2009.)

In the 1950s, when many American entertainments were racially segregated and hundreds of actors had been blacklisted during Communist witch-hunts by congressional investigators, Mr. Carter met the veteran actor Howard Da Silva, whose Hollywood and television career had stalled in 1951 after he invoked his Fifth Amendment rights before the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

“It was Howard who talked me into becoming an actor — he’s the one who changed my life,” Mr. Carter said in an interview for this obituary in 2018. “I quit law school and began studying at Howard’s acting school. I think he called it the Mobile Theater Workshop.”

Mr. Carter appeared in several Black-cast stage productions, both on Broadway and Off Broadway, before breaking into television as the only Black character on “The Phil Silvers Show” (1955-59), playing Pvt. Sugie Sugarman in 92 half-hour episodes of the CBS comedy about an Army con man, Sergeant Bilko, and his motor pool crew.

The show was filmed before studio audiences in New York City. Memorized lines were occasionally flubbed, there were awkward pauses, and the actors often improvised to cover the gaffes, all of which created a spirit of camaraderie in the cast.

“Well, I am the last living survivor of ‘The Phil Silvers Show,’” Mr. Carter said in 2018. “But I’m reluctant to take too much credit for being the only Black man on the show. I was only a cog in the wheel. I slew the foe, but I was just a ham like everybody else. It was a wonderful bunch.”

In 1958, Mr. Carter co-produced an Off Broadway version of Tennessee Williams’s “A Streetcar Named Desire.” The predominantly Black cast featured the actress Hilda Simms as the faded Southern belle Blanche du Bois, and Black actors played Stanley and Stella Kowalski, while white actors filled smaller parts.

Mr. Carter starred with the British actress Sally Ann Howes in “Kwamina,” a 1961 avant-garde musical that explored the romance between a white female doctor and an African tribal chief’s son. After previews in Toronto and Boston, it ran for 32 performances on Broadway.

Also in 1961, Mr. Carter appeared in the Hollywood film “Parrish,” starring Claudette Colbert, Karl Malden and Troy Donahue in a Delmer Daves adaptation of a Mildred Savage novel about family conflicts on a tobacco plantation. And in 1965 he was the only Black actor to portray a G.I. in any of the 152 episodes of the World War II series “Combat!,” which appeared on ABC from 1962 to 1967.

After decades onstage and onscreen, Mr. Carter formed his own production company in 1975 and made educational documentaries. In the 1980s, he expanded into more sophisticated documentaries for PBS, the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts.

In 1988, his two-part documentary, “A Duke Named Ellington,” for the PBS American Masters Series, became the United States entry in television festivals around the world. Narrated and directed by Mr. Carter, it used recorded interviews with Ellington, who died in 1974, and filmed performances by his orchestra. It won CINE Golden Eagle and Golden Antenna awards and an Emmy nomination.

“We went through about 70 hours of film footage, over 90 percent of which has never been seen before,” Mr. Carter told The Times. “Going through this material was like discovering plutonium when you’re searching for a common metal.”

He also produced and directed “Katherine Dunham: Dancing With Life,” documenting the career of the dancer, choreographer and anthropologist who died at 96 in 2006. Described as a “work in progress,” the film was screened in 2013 at Town Hall in Manhattan.

Terry Carter was born John Everett DeCoste on Dec. 16, 1928, in Brooklyn, the only child of William and Mercedes (Durio) DeCoste. His father was a handyman, and his mother managed the home. At home he learned Spanish and gained an appreciation for cultural diversity. He was an excellent student in public schools and graduated from the elite Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan in 1946.

Mr. Carter later joined the merchant marine and served on a ship that carried European war refugees to Latin America. He played piano with a jazz combo in Boston while attending Northeastern University, and studied law at St. John’s University for nearly two years before turning to acting. (Returning to Northeastern, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree there in 1983.)

Mr. Carter’s first major Broadway role was the lead opposite Eartha Kitt in “Mrs. Patterson” (1954), about poverty and ambitious dreams.

In 1964, while working in Europe, he married Anna Scratuglia, his Italian tutor in Rome. They had two children, Miguel and Melinda, and were divorced in 1990. In 1991, he married Beate Glatved, a film editor. She died in 2006. In 2009, he married Selome Zenebe, who had a daughter, Hiwot Minale, from a previous relationship.

In addition to his son, Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, his daughter, his stepdaughter and one granddaughter.

From 1965 to 1968, Mr. Carter was New England’s first Black news anchor, at WBZ-TV in Boston, then a Westinghouse-owned NBC affiliate.

He went to China in 1991 for the United States Information Agency on a cultural lecture tour, and after nearly two decades working in Scandinavia, he returned to New York in 2013.
