Civil, Materials, and Environmental Engineering

College of engineering, ms in civil engineering, intro heading link copy link.

city with highway interchange at night

Civil engineering is a broad-based discipline that encompasses many specialties in the areas of structural engineering and mechanics, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and transportation engineering. Through the careful selection of courses, you can tailor the UIC MS in Civil Engineering program to meet your interests and needs.

Students pursuing the MS in Civil Engineering may choose between two options to complete their degree:

A thesis option , which provides the opportunity to gain research experience and is ideal for students who may be considering PhD study in the future. Thesis students often make connections in the field that can lead to career advice, research sponsorship, or other forms of funding.

A coursework-only option , intended for students who seek additional knowledge or who hope to obtain a professional license in the civil engineering field. This option is available for part-time as well as full-time students.

MS in Civil Engineering students also have the opportunity to focus their study in a specific area of concentration, which helps to target their master’s degree experience toward their desired outcomes. Our concentration choices include:

MS in Civil Engineering Heading link Copy link

The  environmental engineering concentration at UIC is broadly conceived, extending beyond the traditional boundaries of the field.

This concentration covers topics such as:

  • Evaporation and other interactions between the land surface and the atmosphere
  • Geoscience aspects of waste disposal
  • Groundwater contamination and transport
  • Management of stored and spilled hazardous waste
  • Surface and groundwater hydrology and hydraulics
  • Other environmental science and water resources problems

Courses in this concentration draw on the expertise of faculty from several other UIC departments, such as biology, chemical engineering, chemistry, environmental and occupational health sciences, geology, mathematics, and mechanical and industrial engineering. The involvement of these faculty members in our program allows students to explore a wide range of topics in the water resources and environmental engineering field.

The geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering  area of concentration encompasses classical geotechnical engineering—analyzing and designing foundations, retaining structures, and underground structures—as well as environmental geotechnics, such as designing waste containment systems and performing remediation studies.

Students are able to work with faculty whose research addresses a variety of subjects in this area, including environmental geotechnics (e.g. the characterization, containment, remediation, and performance of contaminated materials), earthquake engineering, pavement analysis, and geomechanics.

MS students in the structural engineering and structural mechanics  concentration learn static and dynamic analysis of linear and nonlinear structures including modal analysis, the behavior of structural materials, and the design of structural systems in concrete and steel.

Students examine both current and potential problems in structural engineering. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Bridge rehabilitation and rating
  • Concrete fracture, damage, and creep
  • Failure process of concrete structures
  • Linear and nonlinear finite element analysis
  • Microstructures of materials
  • Structural dynamics and seismic response of structures

This curriculum provides a strong foundation for advanced work in professional practice, research, and teaching. It lays the groundwork for careers in private consulting or construction firms, industrial and governmental research laboratories, and universities, among others.

The  transportation engineering  concentration is oriented toward methods for the planning, design, and operation of surface transportation systems.

Through their coursework and research, students work alongside faculty to learn about and develop solutions to problems related to surface transportation facilities (infrastructure) through the application of optimization and simulation methods, as well as knowledge-based systems. In recent years, the faculty has also engaged in the design and evaluation of intelligent transportation systems.

Porous Materials via Freeze Casting: 3D MXene, Ceramics, and Their Composites for Energy Storage Applications

Freeze casting, an innovative materials processing technique, offers significant potential to create porous structures with high surface-to-volume ratio for high performance devices. This thesis presents a comprehensive study on the fabrication of porous structures using 2D MXene nanomaterials, silica, and alumina, with a focus on achieving controllable interconnected porosity and demonstration of such structures for steelmaking and energy storage. This thesis is divided into three sections. The first part of the thesis examines the freeze casting process for fabricating porous ceramics using silica and camphene. A full-factorial design of experiments is conducted to correlate freeze casting parameters with pore characteristics. Variables like solid loading, particle size, cooling temperature, and distance from the cooling surface are scrutinized. The fabricated samples are cross-sectioned and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and image processing, yielding detailed data on areal porosity, pore size, shape, and orientation. The study successfully demonstrates the ability to steer pore orientation using bidirectional freezing, supported by a finite-element model, providing a quantitative understanding of the effects of freeze casting parameters on the part porosity. In the second part, the research establishes the suitability of freeze-cast alumina for high-temperature applications such as structural ceramics for molten metal and glass processing. Specific tests such as gas permeability, dilatometry and steel penetration tests for porous alumina are carried out in collaboration with Vesuvius Plc., a global leader in molten metal flow engineering and technology, towards this goal. By varying process parameters like solid loading and freezing conditions, the study creates alumina with microscale, interconnected, and directional pores, achieving controlled gas permeability and mechanical strength. The optimized alumina exhibits 70% porosity, impressive gas permeability, high compressive strength, and a suitable dynamic elastic modulus; along with consistent performance under high temperatures, as evidenced by the steel penetration tests. These findings highlight the potential of freeze-cast alumina in advanced industrial applications. The final part of the thesis addresses the challenge of assembling MXene nanomaterials in 3D space without restacking. A novel material system is introduced, comprising a 3D MXene network on a porous ceramic backbone, fabricated using freeze casting. This MXene-infiltrated porous silica (MX-PS) system demonstrates high conductivity and effective performance as supercapacitor electrodes. The successful creation of 3D architectures of 2D MXenes opens new avenues in various fields, including energy storage and catalysis. Overall, this thesis contributes significantly to the literature on porous ceramics and MXene-based nanomaterials, providing valuable insights into their controllable and scalable manufacturing, characterization, and application in high-performance devices and industrial settings.

Auburn Engineering to offer new artificial intelligence programs beginning this fall

Published: Apr 10, 2024 10:05 AM

By Joe McAdory

Auburn Engineering’s Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) will offer three artificial intelligence (AI) engineering degree and certificate programs beginning in Fall 2024.

The programs — master’s degree in AI engineering, graduate certificate in AI engineering and undergraduate certificate in AI engineering — will provide various levels of technical depth to broaden students’ skillsets as they enter the workforce, CSSE Chair Hari Narayanan, said.

“Having a solid artificial intelligence education is a growing demand for the engineering workforce and we look forward to supplying organizations with highly skilled graduates,” Narayanan said. “Employers are looking for people with AI-related skills… even in the most unlikely places. Artificial intelligence promises to revolutionize sectors such as business, defense, education, government and health care. To succeed in these roles, people need to understand how to utilize AI systems productively and efficiently. We aim to meet that need.”

The 30-hour master’s degree curriculum in AI engineering, which can be taken online or on-campus, is open to all students who have already earned a baccalaureate degree from an institution of recognized standing, either in computer science, software engineering, or another STEM discipline, and to those who have professional experience related to computing or IT and familiarity with mathematics. This program requires students to take three core courses — artificial intelligence, machine learning and data mining — and seven technical electives related to AI.

“The graduate program provides in-depth training, including the possibility for students to specialize,” Narayanan said. “For example, a student could say, ‘I want in-depth training in AI, but I also want to know how to use it within cyber security, computer networks, or something else.’”

In the graduate program, students will learn how to:

  • Develop algorithms and methodologies for AI and machine learning systems and technologies.
  • Incorporate software engineering principles to analyze, design and implement AI and machine learning software.
  • Apply AI and machine learning techniques to solve complex engineering problems and problems of societal importance.
  • Deliver written and oral presentations to non-technical and technical audiences.

Like the standard graduate degree program, admission into the graduate certificate program in AI engineering is open to all students with a baccalaureate degree from an institution of recognized standing, either in computer science, software engineering, another STEM discipline or have relevant professional experience and background knowledge.

“The graduate certificate might be appealing to students who have been working within industry for a while and want to upskill,” Narayanan said. “Maybe not enough to design and build a new AI system, but enough to make decisions about what AI technologies and tools to use and how best to use them.”

This 12-hour program, available on-campus or online, includes courses in AI, machine learning and data mining, along with an approved AI-related elective.

Narayaran said the undergraduate certificate in AI engineering is currently open only to CSSE majors.

“Students in this program will develop the deep technical knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems and issues faced by government, industry and society,” he said. “Blending this AI certificate with their chosen CSSE major in computer science or software engineering can be very advantageous for these students.”

The undergraduate certificate program’s 12-hour curriculum models the graduate certificate and includes courses in AI, machine learning and data mining with an approved AI-related elective.

“Developing cutting-edge programs like these — and meeting the growing needs of industry — is expected of leading engineering colleges in the nation,” Narayanan said. “In fact, these programs on engineering AI systems are the first of their kind in Alabama.”

Among the largest departments at Auburn University, CSSE currently offers a variety of degree and certificate programs, including B.S. in Computer Science, Bachelor of Software Engineering, Bachelor of Computer Science (online), Computer Science Minor, Undergraduate Cyber Defense Certificate, M.S. in Computer Science and Software Engineering (thesis or non-thesis options), M.S. in Cybersecurity Engineering, Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity Engineering, M.S. in Data Science and Engineering (data science or data engineering options), Graduate Certificate in Data Engineering, and Doctor of Philosophy.
