One of the reasons I'm running for Vice President of the student council is that I want to give back to the high school I love so much. I want to be that friendly face for new students coming in and a defender for students already here.

During the last two years, I've prepared myself to serve as Vice President by taking on extra work organizing a fan club for our football players to cheer them on when they play at home and make sure our school is represented in the stands at every away game. I've spent time as an office aid, learning about the everyday running of the school and silently taking notes on what we as students can do to improve things and how we can work with the administration.

As your Vice President, I will stand beside your president, offering support and stepping in when she is not able to be here or asks for some extra help. Today, I want to tell you something about me that you might not know. From the time I was five years old, I've been taking guitar lessons. Deliver the Speech With Confidence

Once you've prepared your speech, practicing a few times alone and in front of an audience can help you get ready to deliver your speech with confidence. Whether your speech is lighthearted and funny or serious and to the point, there are a few things to keep in mind.

• Make eye contact with those you are speaking to and don't focus too heavily on one person.
• If you make a mistake, keep going. No one knows what your speech is supposed to sound like.
• Practice some deep breathing exercises or mindfulness beforehand to calm nerves. Remember to take deep breaths throughout your speech and speak a bit slower than you normally would, as nerves can cause you to speak more rapidly.
• Visualize yourself doing your speech well the morning of it.

• Greeting - Attention Getter - The Hook You'll need an opening statement or rhetorical  question to sit your audience up with open ears and minds. For more see: How to write a speech introduction: 12 of the best ways to start.  
• Who you are - your name, your place or grade in the school, and maybe, your hobbies or interests, and the clubs or teams you're a member of. For example, Amnesty International, the speech and debate club, cross-country and basketball. And if you've used a campaign slogan work it in. It'll jog people's memories. 'Ah, yes, that person!', they'll think. Being known and familiar gives you a head start.
• What you want - the role you are campaigning for: President, Vice President,  Treasurer, Secretary, Historian...
• What you are going to do for the audience - benefits to them in exchange for their vote. (Brief summary -you will expand this in the body of your speech.)
• Credibility - your qualification or expertise establishing your fitness for the role you want. (Brief summary - you will expand this in the body of your speech.)
• Transition leading to...

Research the role

Think about your audience, what tone or choice of vocabulary is best suited to them.

Avoid trying to impress with either 'big' words or use of slang. Both are traps! Be yourself. Authentic. Real.

Keep your language conversational rather than overly formal and use smaller rather than large sentences.

Try using active rather than passive words. These convey enthusiasm. For examples, see this page on using action verbs . You'll discover how to go from boring bla bla bland to dynamic excitement.

What 'hook' will you use to get them to listen? Humor? Humor is good if it is relevant and inclusive rather than exclusive. (No 'in' jokes!).

Your goal in the role you want

Avoid setting up expectations that you will deliver beyond your capability. :-)

It might be very tempting, but can you really reduce school hours, increase academic standards, introduce a range of exciting new extracurricular activities, as well as have a 'green day' and a movie night every month? Please keep it real!

Your credibility or qualifications

Now is not the time either to be shy or arrogantly big-headed! Let the audience know how right you are for the role you want.

Set yourself apart from other candidates by sharing compelling personal stories or anecdotes that both support your pitch, and show you understand the key issues that matter to your fellow students.

Your school's requirements

If your speech does not meet pre- established criteria in any way you may find it is returned to you edited. It's safer to find out what those criteria are BEFORE writing to avoid having to re-write or worse, being disqualified entirely.

Mockery and personal insults are not clever. They boomerang back on you, letting your audience know you're not to be trusted and neither are you ready for leadership.

Readily acknowledging the skill and expertise of your fellow candidates sincerely in a way that doesn't demean yourself, or them, shows an open mind and maturity.

Aim to have your speech ready BEFORE the deadline.

Give yourself time to prepare thoroughly, including time to review of your opponents' campaigns. That can be very useful for seeing their strengths as well as their weaknesses, which you can then respond to in your own material.

Student Council President speech example 

Here's a sample student council speech. I've written it from the perspective of someone running for President.

As you read it, imagine it said aloud. That will help you get the rhythm and flow of language. The speech is between 3 - 4 minutes long, depending on how quickly you speak.

Vote Sophia Clarke for Student Council President

"I’ve got a question for you. I’m not asking you to shout your answer out, or raise your hand. All I’m asking is that you give it room in your mind. Let it sit for a bit, and have a think about it.

My question is – do you believe like I do, that all of us deserve the opportunity to make the best of ourselves? Not second best, 3 rd , or even, highly commended. The BEST.

I’m Sophia Clarke. I’m in the 12 th  grade, and I’m running for president. My vision is that each student is enabled to develop the skills and confidence to become the bigger, better version of themselves. The best they can be.  Regardless of who they are, and what they need to achieve that.

It’s an audacious goal. Some would say an idealistic, rather than a realistic, one.

However I say it’s awesome. And that you’re intelligent people who realize that reaching any goal starts with taking the first step.

So let me remind you why choosing me, Sophia Clarke, for president, is also choosing a better chance for yourself, and everyone else to grow.

I know you, and I know your needs well. I’ve served on your behalf in multiple roles through my years here; secretary, auditor, public relations officer, and have successfully taken on multiple issues. You’ll know some of those through directly benefiting from them.

It was me who was behind the push to get a regular anti-bullying program running throughout the school. That was two years ago, and now the  Teens Against Bullying  message underpins what we expect and strive for in our every day dealings with each other.

We know incidents of bullying are far fewer as a result. As our orange tee shirts say we ‘choose kindness, acceptance and inclusion’ for each other, and our selves.

Who has been involved in our mentoring-homework program? Either as a buddy-tutor or as a student getting a helping hand? And who, like me, is passionate about making sure that everybody gets a fair go?

In the past year, under my watch that program has escalated. We have over 50% more tutors across more subject areas and more students taking up the offer of help. That is a fabulous outcome for everybody. Truly win-win.

A tick in the box alongside my name is a tick for the continued growth of those programs. Their value is proven. They allow each of us to grow and experience the strength and confidence that comes from knowing that we can make a positive difference in other people’s lives as well as our own.

When you vote me for President you get my capacity to organize, to liaise, to listen and to speak, working for the benefit of everybody.

A 'yes' for me is a 'yes' for appreciating and celebrating diversity.

A 'yes' for me, Sophia Clarke for President, is 'yes' to a better you.

And together that is a 'yes' to a better life, and a better school, for all of us."

Student Council Vice President speech example

Like the speech above, this one runs to approximately 4 minutes when said aloud. Try it and see.

Nod your head if you've heard of the phrase '2nd fiddle' or '2IC'.

What about 'sidekick'?

Not booting a ball in from a sideline but a trusty partner to whoever it is who has the leading role. Like Robin is for Batman.

Or like, {name of your country's Vice President or Prime Minister} is for {name of country's President or Prime Minister} or {name of your school's Vice Principal} is for {name of your school's Principal}!

Well, that's what I aspire to - to become the trusty, tried and true sidekick to the President on our student council.

My name is Jason Hull. I'm in Grade 12 and proudly standing in front of you today as a candidate for the role of Vice President. Yes, I am asking you to give me something of immense value - your vote.

I know what the issues, here at {name of school} are. As part of my campaign, I've interviewed you, and listened. I promise your ideas will be acted on.

Afterall I've trained for this role, put in the time. You know, I know how to get things done.

Last year I served as Secretary and the year before that I was a representative for the committee - proof that I'm committed to bettering our school environment not just for you, but for everybody!

With your support, I'll be your go-to guy when you want to make sure that your opinions and feedback reach the decision-makers.

One of my main goals as your Vice President is to champion your initiatives: amongst others, that's the library extensions you told me about, the desire for healthier food choices in our cafeteria, and the urgent need to increase and diversify the workforce and out-reach opportunities that so many of you mentioned.

In the role of Vice President, I will work alongside the President fulfilling my duties to the best of my ability. 

Together, we'll make sure that your concerns, and hopes are not just heard but actively pursued. Not 'I' will make sure, but 'we'.

There is no 'I' in we, and that too, is a prerequisite of the Vice President's position: the capacity to put aside ego and to work productively for the good of all.

Because together, we, the Vice President, the President and the other council members, are stronger and can achieve more.

The Vice President role may be a support act but it's a vital one.  To succeed in it, collaboration is key. I promise to work hand in hand not only with the President but also with the entire student council team, our teachers, and our administration on your behalf.

Unity is strength. More than ever, we need to nurture understanding, kindness and respect for each other. Regardless of your grade, interests, or background, I want every one of you to feel valued and heard.

That's a goal many would say is impossible.

However, I say, we need to be the difference we want to see in the world. And to borrow those famous words of Helen Keller's: "Alone we can do so little. Together we can so much."

It would be an honor to be your voice, your eyes and your ears as Vice President.

So, I ask you, will you trust me to have your best interests at heart? Will you enable me to work on your behalf?

And are you willing to give me, Jason Hull, your vote for best sidekick, aka. Vice President?

After you've finished writing your speech

Now that you've finished writing, you're ready to begin work on your delivery: how you present the speech to your audience.

The first step in that process is making sure your speech fits comfortably into whatever time you've been allocated.

After that comes rehearsal. The information you need for both steps is below.

Timing and word count

Student Council Speeches are generally brief: around 1-4 minutes long which isn't a lot of time! That's between approximately 150 - 600 words at an average speaking rate of 150 words per minute.

To be safe say your speech out loud as if you were delivering it for real and time it. In some schools going overtime can result in being disqualified.

Going faster to fit everything in

Please do not be tempted to say it faster to get everything you planned said. As a strategy it doesn't work. You'll end up gabbling: speaking far too quickly and people won't be able to understand what you're saying.

Cutting out extra material

If you have got too much material for the time limit, cut it. Choose the least important ideas to let go of first. Then move on to rephrasing to reduce the number of words used to express a point.

When you think it's done, repeat the test. Say it out loud as if you were actually giving it, and time it.

If you're now within the allotted time, you are ready for rehearsal.

How to rehearse your speech

Please, please  rehearse your speech ! Do not be tempted to wing it. The more you rehearse the easier it will be to deliver it well.

Remember it is only 1 to 4 minutes long! In that time your goal is to have your audience ready to vote for you.

You can help them make that decision by being confident and prepared. You will show that through:

• your speaking style  - natural, sincere, fluent, understandable (clear and able to be heard without straining)
• your body language  - relaxed, open gestures, good eye contact and smiling
• your personal grooming or presentation  because how you look 'speaks' too. Make sure that your clothing and general grooming supports your speech because, like it or not, you will be judged on both!

Getting involved in school politics is a great way to boost your resume, gain leadership experience, and make an impact on how your school operates. Campaigning can be some work and be time-consuming, but functioning as a student representative can be rewarding. Preparing yourself and getting support from your peers can be difficult, but not impossible if you follow some basic steps.

Enlisting Support for Your Campaign

• Also ask your friends to get their friends to vote for you. If they do, it can greatly augment the number of votes you receive.

• Approach the football team to see if they need new equipment, a better playing field, or more support from the student body. As a student representative, you may be able to help them achieve these goals.
• Get involved in special events and fundraisers for particular causes as well. If the chess team has a fundraiser to help them travel to a tournament, your presence at the event could be reason enough for the entire chess club to vote for you.

• Maybe the student body wants more vending machines or better food in the lunchroom. Vow to address these issues as a class representative and more people will vote for you.
• Be careful when taking a position on divisive issues, however, as you risk alienating certain segments of the student body on particularly charged issues.

• Regardless of your class size, try to convince each individual to vote for you.
• Be friendly to everyone, including your fellow contenders.

Advertising Your Campaign

• Don't hang flyers or posters for your campaign in areas of the school where they are not supposed to be.
• Don't pass out trinkets or gifts to potential voters if this is not allowed in your school.

• If there is a particular hallway or room where students congregate often, place your campaign signs in that area.
• Use neon green, yellow, orange or pink poster boards to make your signs. These colors have been proven effective in catching people's attention.

• Try handing out candy. Everyone loves candy and they really like the people who give it to them for free!
• If your school doesn't allow you to hand out candy, then try handing out bracelets, pencils, and stickers. [6] X Research source You may find that people are sticking your stickers on the wall and that is just extra exposure.

• Again, neon colors are ideal for catching the attention of your classmates.
• Make sure to check with your school to ensure this is allowed.

Winning a Class Election

• You may also wish to start your own club or organization. Spearheading an initiative like this will allow you to stand out from the crowd as someone who is willing to invest his own time to improve the student experience.

• Always be aware of the limitations of your office. You don't want to make promises now only to find out later that you don't have the authority.

• When you make a speech, keep it short, and to the point. Tell the voters why you are the best candidate for the office you're running for. [9] X Research source

• When making a speech, don't try to plead, bribe, blackmail, or make promises you cannot fulfill. Know what you can and cannot do in the office you're seeking. [11] X Research source

• Make hand gestures and move around your audience while making speeches. This will help keep their attention.

• Make a note of the things you promised to do while campaigning.
• Tackle those issues one by one, checking off your initiatives as you go.
• Be prepared to fight for something you promised the student body. Perhaps you said you would try to increase the amount of time between classes, but the school's administration says it can't be done. Don't just give up. Ask questions of the administration and challenge any inconsistencies in their explanation. Your classmates voted for you so that you could represent them. Even if you can't get them what they want, you can at least say you tried your best.

Prioritising older voters while forcing teenagers into national service has been described as "outright wrong" in Sky News' Target Towns.

The early stages of the campaign have seen the Conservatives offering a pensions "triple lock plus" while also promising to force 18-year-olds to dedicate time to the military or community service.

Labour has vowed to maintain the pensions triple lock for the duration of the next Parliament, if elected.

Inside a boxing fitness class laid on for elderly residents of a care home in Grimsby, Sky News heard concerns about an emerging generational divide.

Sydney Ballard, 18, has just started a student work placement at the care home. She said she wanted to see fewer dividing lines in politics.

Earlier today, SNP leader John Swinney addressed party activists in Glasgow as they try to stave off a push from Labour to regain seats across Scotland.

After praising SNP candidates standing for re-election, he said the election "takes place at a time of a acute difficulty and challenge for people in our communities in Scotland, and particularly here in the city of Glasgow".

He hit out at the "damage" of the Tory government through austerity, the cost of living crisis, and Brexit, and said they have tried to "withstand that".

"For all of these reasons, the Tory government deserves to be removed from office, and the best way to do that is to vote SNP," he declared.

Looking forward, the first minister said that "people in Scotland are likely to be disappointed by the Labour Party that is likely to come into office" because their offer does not differ significantly.

He called on the Labour Party to have an emergency budget if it wins the election that "brings to an end, to a grinding halt, the austerity that is damaged our public services and commit to invest in the National Health Service and in education".

By contrast, he said the SNP government in Scotland - which is not up for election currently - has kept children out o poverty, is committed to net zero, and attracts foreign investment.

"We've got to get rid of the Tories," he said. "But at this election, we've got to be careful about what replaces them, because in that choice, people will have to decide whether they want MPs like my colleagues here who will campaign against the rape clause and the two child limit, or Labour MPs who are quite happy to lift the cap on bankers bonuses."

Mr Swinney concluded by saying that SNP MPs "will protect the interests of the people of Scotland and put those interests first in the House of Commons", calling on people to vote for his party on 4 July.

The Liberal Democrats have announced plans for free school meals for all primary school children funded by a new share buyback tax.

In a policy announcement that could put pressure on Labour, the Lib Dems said the plan would begin with an immediate extension of free school meals to all 900,000 children living in poverty who currently miss out.

The second phase would see all primary school children receiving free school meals as the public finances stabilise.

The pledge, to be included in the Lib Dem's manifesto, would be funded by a 4% levy on the share buybacks of FTSE 100 listed corporations.

This is similar to the excise tax on buybacks implemented by President Biden in the US and could raise around £1.4bn a year, the party said.

A share buyback is when companies buy back their own shares from the market to increase their price - essentially so they can return excess cash to their shareholders.

Critics have warned this can come at the expense of productive investment in the economy.

Former Tory MP Aaron Bell, who represented Newcastle-under-Lyme until parliament was dissolved yesterday, has announced he will not be standing at this general election.

In an open letter posted on Facebook, Mr Bell said: "It is with a very heavy heart that I have decided not to contest the forthcoming general election, for personal and family reasons.

"Being an MP has taken a considerable toll on me."

Mr Bell went on to say he was proud to have served under Rishi Sunak's government, and thanked his wife and three children for their support and "sacrifices".

Mr Bell has served as an MP since December 2019 and has been an assistant whip since November 2023.

Julian Knight, the former MP for Solihull, has announced he will stand as an independent candidate at this general election.

Mr Knight, 51, was suspended as a Conservative in December 2022 after a serious sexual assault allegation was made against him.

He has always maintained his innocence and on 2 April,  the Metropolitan Police dropped the investigation  without questioning Mr Knight.

But he remained suspended from the Tory party as the chief whip, who organises the party's MPs, said "further complaints" had been made against him - allegations he rejects ( more here ).

He announced late last month he would be standing down at this general election - but has now changed his mind.

Mr Knight wrote in a post on X: "After discussions with family, Conservative members and constituents I have decided to run as an independent in the forthcoming election.

"Solihull deserves more than a whips appointed candidate who doesn't get the issues."

He went on to say he has been "forced out of the party after an entirely false allegation", which, he added, is "now being investigated by police for perversion of the course of justice".

"It's important to make a stand. People should not lose their position because of a false allegation."

He concluded by saying that Rishi Sunak is "a disastrous campaigner" and Solihull would be "best served by an independent" while a Labour government is in power.

The Welsh Conservatives have focused on Labour's record in Wales as they launched their general election campaign on Friday.

Wales Secretary David TC Davies and the Conservatives' Senedd leader Andrew RT Davies launched the campaign at a farm in Chepstow, Monmouthshire.

They said they were the only party who had a "clear, bold plan to deliver a secure future for Wales".

Recently-announced Conservative policies including national service for 18-year-olds were at the forefront of the Welsh launch.

Mr TC Davies said a Conservative UK government would "get Wales moving" by boosting rail connections between North West England and North Wales.

They also pledged to deliver "nuclear power back to North Wales" and "ensuring personal security for pensioners".

"We will give our young people the best start in life with the national service scheme which will support communities and keep our country safe," he added.

Senedd Tory leader Mr RT Davies said Labour "cannot be trusted to run Wales, so they cannot be trusted to run the United Kingdom".

The other candidates so far announced to be standing in Monmouthshire are:

• Catherine Fookes (Labour Party)
• William Powell (Liberal Democrats)
• Ian Chandler (Green Party)
• June Davies (True and Fair Party)

Yesterday saw Welsh Labour launch its general election campaign, also in Monmouthsire, as Sir Keir Starmer joined Wales's first minister Vaughan Gething in Abergavenny.

Sir Keir pledged there would be "no more conflict" between the Welsh first minister and UK prime minister were Labour to win the election.

Meanwhile, Plaid Cymru launched their campaign in Bangor, Gwynedd, with leader Rhun ap Iorwerth saying "no more to ignoring Wales at Westminster".

The Welsh Liberal Democrats launched their campaign in Knighton, Powys, on Wednesday, pledging to stand up for Wales's farming communities.

Sir Keir Starmer is asked next about polling that shows that while support for Labour is rising, support for independence is not falling.

Asked if his goal is to see that support fall after five years of a Labour government, he replies: "I do understand the sentiment that leads a number of people to say after 14 years of being shackled to this Tory government in Westminster, we'd be better off out."

But he says the election could be "a game-changer", saying: "If people want change, if they want a better Scotland, a different relationship across the UK between the four nations - that is part of the change we can bring about in this election."

He promises that he will "deliver for Scotland" and not be "in conflict".

That concludes Sir Keir Starmer's event in the West of Scotland.

It was reported this morning that the Labour leader used a private jet to travel to Scotland to launch his green energy investment vehicle, GB Energy.

Sir Keir Starmer is asked about those reports, and confirms they are true.

"We did use a private jet because we needed to get very quickly to Scotland from Wales yesterday, and we have to use the most efficient form of transport in the middle of a very, very busy general election campaign.

"We offset the carbon, we always do whenever we use transport in the air."

He adds: "We've got five weeks to take our argument to the country, I need to get across the country to speak to as many people as possible, and from time to time we have to do it as efficiently as possible."
