It is not easy for parents to make the decision to send their child away into the waiting arms of strangers who promise to take care of them — people who promise to show them the wonders of nature, fun, new skills, and friendships. As a parent of two children, even I struggle with the idea, and I have been around summer camps my entire life.

The world needs the next generation to be more tolerant of each other’s views, ideology, and beliefs. Summer camp is an opportunity for children to be exposed to the best of human character. Carefully selected role models are dedicated to showing your child how to have fun, learn from others, and make friends in person rather than online. Camp allows kids to meet people from all over the world, every race, culture, and socioeconomic level. I still remember one of my counselors, Danny, from England, explaining to me, “The world is full of excuses. It doesn’t matter where you came from or what has happened to you. At the end of the day you choose how you treat others.”

There is something magical about a summer camp experience. Each and every camp in the world is different. Not merely because of geography or location, but because of the traditions and people who have touched the camp. Every camp has hidden treasures of history and traditions that give it character and identity. Even with agency camps like the YMCA where there is a common mission, every camp is unique in its style, program, games, geography, traditions, and experience.

Every staff member, alumni camper, and volunteer has memories associated with their time at their camp — memories that stay with them for their lifetime. Most people remember with fondness the coun¬selors, cabins, camp food, camp outs, and special happenings of their time.

Camp is an independent experience that shapes one’s character and life — a controlled, safe environment where chil-dren and youth are able to make their own decisions about simple things (what activity they want to do, how many s’mores they want to make, or what clothes they are going to wear) and about important things (who they will hang out with . . . who will be their friends).

Camp is a place where kids interact with people face-to-face and, at the same time, learn about themselves and others around a camp fire, under the stars, or sitting around a dining hall table. Camp allows the idea of boarding the train to Hogwarts to go from fantasy to reality — children find a world filled with possibilities unavailable to them in everyday life.

Camps give kids a chance to practice being the best they can be. They experience a place designed to create happy memories and encourage self-expression. They have the opportunity to climb towers, ride horses, shoot an arrow, and even experience the success of winning the big game! It stays with them forever. Kids will learn from a full range of emotions and human experi¬ences including homesickness, friendship, disagreements, team work, frustrations, jubilant success, and more.

As parents, our hopes and jobs are to ready our kids to be productive, independent, and capable people — to prepare them to thrive without us. Camp offers a way for kids to start developing those skills in the best possible environment. It makes me a bit sad every time my son runs off to join his cabin group without even a look back . . . and at the same time, I burst with pride watching him growing into a happy, independent, tolerant, open, confident, and capable person. I know that we will have plenty to talk about when he gets home from camp. I also know he will remember the trust and gift of his time at camp, and it will add to him for the rest of his life.

There is so much competition for our children’s time in the summer — sports practices, summer school, well-deserved vacations. But let’s not forget the value of a camp experience — camp is a gift we can give our children that they will benefit from and remember forever. If ever there was a time when the world needed a generation of future leaders who understood the intrica¬cies of living in a community, having toler¬ance, and being open — that time is now.

We all gained many valuable skills and lessons from this camp, which we took home with us. We learned about other cultures and ways of life at this camp, as well as working efficiently together as a team. As a result, we developed better interpersonal skills and gained socialization skills.

While I was a student, I witnessed the importance of summer camp in the development of a child. In addition to these skills, students benefit from summer camps by taking a break from everyday life. In this program, we learn to make decisions independently and take calculated risks while understanding the importance of clear thinking and teamwork.

It is really impossible to forget my summer camp experience. As summer camps involve new activities that inspire young minds with vigor and enthusiasm, summer camps are the most beautiful memories of school life.

My Camp Experience Essay:

Going to camp was always one of the highlights of my summer. It was a time when I could escape from the mundane routine of home and school, and immerse myself in a new environment full of adventure and new experiences.

Many college applicants have had summer camp experiences. In this Common Application essay, Max discusses his challenging relationship with a difficult student who ends up having a lot to contribute. 

The Essay Prompt

Max's essay was originally written for the pre-2013 Common Application essay prompt that states,  "Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence."  The influential person option no longer exists, but there are many ways to write about an important person with the current seven essay options on the 2018-19 Common Application .

Max's essay has recently been revised to fit the new 650-word length limit of the current Common Application, and it would work nicely with the 2018-19 prompt #2 :  "The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?"

The essay would also work well with Common Application essay option #5 ,  "Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others."

Max's Common Application Essay

Student Teacher

Anthony was neither a leader nor a role model. In fact, his teachers and his parents were constantly chastising him because he was disruptive, ate too much, and had a hard time staying focused. I met Anthony when I was a counselor at a local summer camp. The counselors had the usual duties of keeping kids from smoking, drowning, and killing each other. We made God’s eyes, friendship bracelets, collages, and other clichés. We rode horses, sailed boats, and hunted snipe.

Each counselor also had to teach a three-week course that was supposed to be a little more “academic” than the usual camp fare. I created a class called “Things that Fly.” I met with fifteen students for an hour a day as we designed, built, and flew kites, model rockets, and balsawood airplanes.

Anthony signed up for my class. He was not a strong student. He had been kept back a year at his school, and he was larger and louder than the other middle school kids. He talked out of turn and lost interest when others were talking. In my class, Anthony got some good laughs when he smashed his kite and threw the pieces into the wind. His rocket never made it to the launch pad because he crumpled it in a fit of frustration when a fin fell off.

In the final week, when we were making airplanes, Anthony surprised me when he drew a sketch of a sweep-wing jet and told me he wanted to make a “really cool plane.” Like many of Anthony’s teachers, and perhaps even his parents, I had largely given up on him. Now he suddenly showed a spark of interest. I didn’t think the interest would last, but I helped Anthony get started on a scale blueprint for his plane. I worked one-on-one with Anthony and had him use his project to demonstrate to his classmates how to cut, glue and mount the balsawood framework. When the frames were complete, we covered them with tissue paper. We mounted propellers and rubber bands. Anthony, with all his thumbs, created something that looked a bit like his original drawing despite some wrinkles and extra glue.

Our first test flight saw Anthony’s plane nose-dive straight into the ground. His plane had a lot of wing area in the back and too much weight in the front. I expected Anthony to grind his plane into the earth with his boot. He didn’t. He wanted to make his creation work. The class returned to the classroom to make adjustments, and Anthony added some big flaps to the wings. Our second test flight surprised the whole class. As many of the planes stalled, twisted, and nose-dived, Anthony’s flew straight out from the hillside and landed gently a good 50 yards away.

I’m not writing about Anthony to suggest that I was a good teacher. I wasn’t. In fact, I had quickly dismissed Anthony like many of his teachers before me. At best, I had viewed him as a distraction in my class, and I felt my job was to keep him from sabotaging the experience for the other students. Anthony’s ultimate success was a result of his own motivation, not my instruction.

Anthony’s success wasn’t just his plane. He had succeeded in making me aware of my own failures. Here was a student who was never taken seriously and had developed a bunch of behavioral issues as a result. I never stopped to look for his potential, discover his interests, or get to know the kid beneath the facade. I had grossly underestimated Anthony, and I am grateful that he was able to disillusion me.

I like to think that I’m an open-minded, liberal, and non-judgmental person. Anthony taught me that I’m not there yet.

Critique of Max's Common Application Essay

In general, Max has written a strong essay for the Common Application , but it does take a few risks. Below you'll find a discussion of the essay's strengths and weaknesses.

Essays on important or influential people can quickly become predictable and cliché when they focus on the typical heroes of high school students: a parent, a brother or sister, a coach, a teacher.

From the first sentence, we know that Max's essay is going to be different: "Anthony was neither a leader nor a role model." Max's strategy is a good one, and the admissions folks who read the essay will most likely be pleased to read an essay that isn't about how Dad is the greatest role model or Coach is the greatest mentor.

Also, essays on influential people often conclude with the writers explaining how they've become better people or owe all of their success to the mentor. Max takes the idea in a different direction; Anthony has made Max realize that he isn't as good of a person as he had thought, that he still has much to learn. The humility and self-critique is refreshing.

There's no one rule for writing a winning essay title , but Max's title is perhaps a little too clever. "Student Teacher" immediately suggests a student who is teaching (something that Max is doing in his narrative), but the true meaning is that Max's student taught him an important lesson. Thus, both Anthony and Max are "student teachers."

However, that double meaning is not apparent until after one has read the essay. The title by itself does not immediately grab our attention, nor does it clearly tell us what the essay will be about.

For the most part, Max maintains a pretty serious tone throughout the essay. The first paragraph does have a nice touch in the way that it pokes fun at all the cliché activities that are typical of summer camp.

The real strength of the essay, however, is that Max manages the tone to avoid sounding like he is bragging about his accomplishments. The self-criticism of the essay's conclusion may seem like a risk, but it arguably works to Max's advantage. The admissions counselors know that no student is perfect, so Max's awareness of his own short-comings will probably be interpreted as a sign of maturity, not as a red flag highlighting a defect in character.

The Essay Length

At 631 words, Max's essay is at the upper end of the Common Application length requirement of 250 to 650 words. This is not a bad thing. If a college is requesting an essay, it is because the admissions folks want to get to know the applicant better. They can learn more from you with a 600-word essay than with a 300-word essay. You may encounter counselors who argue that admissions officers are extremely busy, so shorter is always better. This little evidence to support such a claim, and you'll find very few applicants to top-tier colleges (such as the Ivy League schools) being admitted with essays that don't take advantage of the space allowed.

The ideal essay length is certainly subjective and depends in part on the applicant and the story being narrated, but Max's essay length is absolutely fine. This is particularly true because the prose is never wordy, flowery, or excessive. The sentences tend to be short and clear, so the overall reading experience isn't labored.

The Writing

The opening sentence grabs our attention because it isn't what we expect from an essay. The conclusion is also pleasingly surprising. Many students would be tempted to make themselves the hero of the essay and state what a profound impact they had on Anthony. Max turns it around, highlights his own failures, and gives the credit to Anthony.

The balance of the essay isn't perfect. Max's essay spends far more time describing Anthony than it does describe Anthony's influence. Ideally, Max could cut a couple of sentences from the middle of the essay and then develop a little further the two short concluding paragraphs.

Final Thoughts

Max's essay, like  Felicity's essay , takes some risks. It's possible an admissions officer would judge Max negatively for exposing his biases. But this is unlikely. In the end, Max presents himself as someone who is a leader (he is designing and teaching a class, after all) and as someone who is aware that he still has much to learn. These are qualities that should be attractive to most college admissions folks. After all, colleges want to admit students who are eager to learn and who have the self-awareness to recognize that they have room for a lot more personal growth.

During one of these camps, the theme of the camp was ‘Culture’. We as students were made to brainstorm on the customs and traditions of various cultures. At the end of the camp we were asked to share what we learnt with everyone. This was a really interesting activity as we got to listen to everybody’s perspective about the importance of the camp. Our teachers also came up and shared their views on the importance of such camps and the positive impact they have on our young minds.

This camp was a memorable experience for all of us as at the end of it, we took home many important skills and lessons. This camp not only taught us about various cultures and their lifestyles but along with this we learnt to work efficiently as a part of a team. Along with this, we learnt to socialize with other people and develop better communication skills.

As a student, I’ve experienced the importance of summer camp in a child’s development. In addition to these skills, summer camps provide students with a much needed get away from everyday studies. My Summer Camp Experience

Here I’d like to share my own experience with a summer camp in grade 6. Our school organised a little 3 day camp to a nearby hill-station. Many of our regular teachers joined us along with hike counsellors and tour guides who were extremely experienced in camping activities. We were given special instructions about discipline and behaviour which has to be maintained while at a high altitude place.

We started the journey in a bus where we played team games to socialize with students from other classes. Upon reaching our destination, we were informed about various aspects of camping and about everything we should pay attention to it. It was a first multi-day trip without our parents for most of us.

It was a challenge as we had to take care of ourselves and our belongings in the absence of our parents who usually complete most of these chores for us. This taught us about living independently and taking up responsibility. While on the campsite, all the students were divided into groups and were given various tasks such as helping to set up tents, gathering firewood and arranging food.

These tasks gave us a chance to work in teams and know each other well. After the hard work, we were served delicious but simple food. Once done with the dinner, every student helped tirelessly to clean up the surrounding areas and wash the dishes. These things develop helpful nature in the kids and inculcate a fine habit of completing their work themselves.

We were taken into the woods to hike and explore nature and its elements. There we were taught about the importance of various vegetation and we also learnt about the local wildlife. While hiking in the dense and endless woods we received a chance to explore the intricacy and wonders of nature.

The entire camping experience holds an overwhelming amount of life skill to learn and apply. I feel extremely lucky to have got the chance to experience this time as it taught me values of life. Every parent should ensure that their child spends enough time in understanding and exploring nature rather than indulging in technology all the time. Nature teaches us the concept of simple living and provides serenity to our minds in our fast moving lives.

Keeping in mind the vast difference this little endeavor creates in a child’s development schools across various countries have started organizing such camps. These are aimed at ensuring the overall development of a child along with academic excellence. Students as well as parents must encourage the students to participate in such camps.

• Self-Confidence: Summer camp helps children develop their self-esteem in the absence of academic and social competition that forms their school lives. During these camps they participate in non-competitive and diverse activities. Camp life motivates children and is a real boast for them.
• Physical Activity: Summer camp life makes them physically more active as they participate in various physical activities such as swimming, hiking, riding, playing outdoor games and indulging in new adventures. In camps they are always active. This makes them physically stronger. It enhances their physical competency and their ability to challenge themselves.
• Learning Opportunities: Summer camps create many learning opportunities for kids whether its music, dance, science or art. Learning in camps is more effective as it gives the kids more practical knowledge and real experience.
• Summer Camp is a Break: Summer camps are something really exciting and adventurous. Children welcome this whole new experience than to continue with the same old boring routine. It is the much needed change for children to have fun and experience carefree living. They can relax and learn at the same time.

Summer camp is not only for having fun. The value of experience is more important. It affects the child in a lot of positive ways. It develops the child’s mental, physical and social ability. It is the opportunity for them to grow emotionally and socially. They become more independent and confident about themselves and we know that practical knowledge is better than theoretical knowledge; due to their own experience they will prove better in their life. Is there a specific format you should use to submit your application essay? For example, are you supposed to submit it a certain way through a website or are you supposed to save it as a pdf and email it? Whatever the process, review it and submit it in the format you are supposed to use.

Example of an Application Essay for a Summer Program

Let’s take a prompt and review how you might want to respond to it: Write a 250-maximum-word essay on important academic or life experiences in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) you have encountered.

My STEM journey includes transformative experiences, notably engineering collaboration and hands-on molecular biology research. I interned at a tech startup and learned how to engineer sustainable solutions, where I learned teamwork and research methods. 

Interning at a tech startup, InTech, showed me the practical applications of academic knowledge. Leadership roles in STEM clubs and outreach programs allowed me to share my passion and foster a sense of community. 

These experiences have shaped me and my role in STEM, so I want to launch my STEM journey through the STEM Intensive Summer Program.

Consider your interests, goals, and desired outcomes when considering a summer program. Hey guys, I'm in the process of applying for some summer programs, but I'm having a hard time with the application essays. Could any of you share some examples of successful essays for summer programs from previous years? I'd really appreciate it!

Hey! I understand that writing essays for summer programs can be challenging. While I can't provide specific examples of successful essays due to privacy reasons, I can definitely offer you some guidance on what you should focus on in your essays.

1. Be personal: Write about genuine experiences, passions, or goals that are unique to you. This is your opportunity to let the program organizers get to know who you are, and why you'd be an excellent fit for the program.

2. Tailor the essay to the program: Make sure to do thorough research on the program you're applying to, understanding the specific values, themes, and opportunities it offers. Then, connect these to your own interests, achievements, and aspirations. Show the program organizers that you understand what they're about, and that you're applying because you genuinely feel you would be a good match.

3. Describe your impact: Just as with college application essays, summer program essays should showcase your ability to make a positive impact on your community, school, or the world in general. Provide detailed examples of how you've made a difference in the past, and make sure to explain how the summer program will further empower you to continue making an impact.

4. Keep it concise and focused: Since program essays are usually quite short, you'll want to make every word count. Be clear and direct in your writing, and avoid going off on tangents or including unnecessary details. Stick to the main points and key examples that support your overall message.

5. Proofread and edit: Finally, ensure your essays are polished and well-structured. Find someone, like a trusted teacher or mentor, to provide feedback and help you refine your writing. Make sure you address any grammar, punctuation, or spelling errors to present the best possible version of your essay.

Essay Strategies for 2019 Pre-College Summer Programs

Last week , we told you about the best 2019 pre-college programs for high schoolers. Did a few options seem like a fit for you and your goals? Awesome! Let’s talk about applying.

Once you’ve narrowed down the programs, it’s time to review the requirements and application materials. Other than grades, test scores, and recommendations, a key part of applicant assessment and review is the application essay.

While plenty of applicants have the credentials, essays are a valuable tool that will help set you apart from the pack by illustrating not only your seriousness about the opportunity, but your fit with the program. Program coordinators want to attract students who will thrive in the research and/or internship environment, and who will go on to become impressive alumni who will ultimately prove a solid investment and exemplar of the program’s success.

Through the essays you write, you’ll want to convey not just why you find the program attractive, but how you’ll benefit, learn, and grow from the opportunity. Are there faculty members you’re particularly excited to work with? Are there research areas you can’t wait to contribute to and explore? How will this program enrich your leadership capabilities?

In addition, some of the applications also ask for what we refer to as “character” essays: those that showcase one of your defining qualities. How do you demonstrate leadership in your life? What does it mean to you to be a leader? Which service experiences have meant the most to you? How have you served as an example for others? How did you navigate and overcome a significant challenge?

Finally, a few applications also feature “issue” essays: How does socioeconomic status interact with educational opportunity? Why do you feel diversity is integral to business? What modern issue needs the most scientific attention and resources?

Below are the available essay prompts along with some tips for crafting responses to each of the open applications featured in last week’s post . Note: Some applications are not repeated this week because the deadline has passed!

Texas Tech - Clark Scholars Program

DEADLINE: 2/22/2019

Essays: Two 500-word essays

Research Rationale: Describe your primary interest, being very specific; this will help with matching you to a research professor. (Optional - describe your secondary interest, being very specific.)

Narrative: Tell the Selection Committee about yourself and your reasons for applying to the Clark Scholarship Program. Please include your future goals and how becoming a Clark Scholar would contribute to achieving those goals.

“The [narrative essay] is how the program will benefit them. The other… is about their research and what they want to pursue and why. If students have done research, we hope that they will take some time to reflect on their research in these prompts.” – Dr. Michael San Francisco, a professor and dean of the Honors College at Texas Tech University

As we mentioned, articulating your fit with the program, including the research you’re most interested in and keen to participate in, as well as how the program fits with your professional goals will be paramount to your success as an applicant.

NASA & University of Texas at Austin - Summer Intern Program

DEADLINE: 3/1/2019

ESSAYS: One 250-word (maximum) essay

Prompt: Describe yourself and discuss each of the following as part of your essay. You are not limited to these areas.

Important academic or life experiences in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math)

Extracurricular activities that have influenced you in a positive way (include skills you deem valuable for an academic team research setting)

Your current academic path and career plans

How your experience in this program will impact your plans for the future

Share your prior experience in STEM opportunities.

How did you hear about the SEES Internship Program?

The subjects that most interest me are:

Which of the following does your school offer?

Science AP classes

Computer Science coding (and which language[s])

Dual credit

My participation in SEES depends on my receiving a travel scholarship

This is not a lot of space for very much information, so the best choice is to figure out how these topics interrelate for you and break it down into 2-3 meaningful paragraphs.

For example, your topics could flow as follows: How did you get into and realize your love for STEM? What activities did you engage in? What opportunities were available to you (and which did you take advantage of)? How has this set you on your current academic path and passions? What are your future plans and how are you currently working towards them? How did you hear about the program and how will it help your goals?

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) - SAMS Program

DEADLINE: Rolling basis started 1/3/2019

ESSAYS: Five 300-word (minimum) essays

Identify and reflect on an issue affecting your community. In what way(s) might a STEM-related discipline improve the issue you've identified?

How has culture and family background influenced the way you see the world?

Tell us about a significant challenge you've encountered and how you've overcome it. What values and skills did you learn in the process?

Please discuss how and why you became interested in STEM. In what way(s) is your interest in STEM supported in your high school?

How would attending the Summer Academy for Math and Science at Carnegie Mellon University support your academic and career goals? How would you contribute to the success of the program?

In addition to the latter prompts which reflect on program fit (see aforementioned tips), this application also includes character and issue essays. This is your chance to articulate how you applied your passion and what will be the impact of your future work, as well as help the admissions committee understand you more fully as a person. Think about the characteristics you want to portray (Hint: check out the program or university’s mission statement and goals) and showcase them through your essays.

For example, for the first prompt, you’ll want to illustrate your empathy and your ingenuity. What problems have you noticed in your community and how could work in your field alleviate them? For the second and third, think carefully about the qualities you want to highlight and how to best create a narrative to communicate them. What value did your parents exemplify for you that has shaped how you see the world and, more specifically, how to solve problems? How did you use a CMU-valued trait, such as creativity, to conquer an obstacle? Decide on your message, then tell your story. Each response should have a thesis (which I try to help my students conceptualize as a one-sentence direct answer to the prompt) that the essay states and supports.

Stony Brook University - Simons Summer Research Program

DEADLINE: 1/23/2019

ESSAYS: Requires five 90-word (maximum) short responses and two 250-word (maximum) essays.

Short response prompts:

Why do you want to participate in the Simons Summer Research Program? Be specific about your aspirations and goals for the upcoming summer. Tell us what previous Simons faculty mentors/research groups are of most interest to you.

What are your long-term academic and career aspirations/goals?

How do you spend your time outside of class? Please briefly describe your 3 most significant interests/activities, including any employment or volunteer experience.

What problem or project have you tackled recently? Give a specific example that best conveys your problem-solving skills or talents. You may describe problem-solving experiences outside research/ science.

Briefly summarize any previous research experience (if applicable). Please include research-oriented courses you may have taken. Tell us about any computer/mechanical skills you have that may be helpful in a laboratory setting. Be specific about the nature of your research experience(s) and your responsibilities. If you have already begun working with a Stony Brook faculty mentor and made arrangements to continue a research project for next summer, please describe what have you accomplished to date/what you hope to accomplish in summer 2019.

Essay prompts:

What scientific discovery or technological advance in the past year or two did you find especially interesting and/or significant? How did you find out about it and why do you think it is significant?

Within the broad discipline in which you propose to do research (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.), what question(s) or problem(s) regarding the physical and/or natural world are you most interested in, or would you most like to see answered?

Luckily, the shorter essay prompts make clear what SBU wants from you and are relatively straight forward. The two longer parts are both character essays: they want you to show specific qualities in yourself, namely intellectual curiosity. This is where you can showcase your passion as well as your background knowledge and analytical thinking.

MIT - MITES Program

DEADLINE: 2/1/2019

Essays: Five required and one optional 300-word (maximum) essays

What are some career goals you have for yourself at the moment? How might the OEOP summer programs help you attain these goals?

What are you passionate about? How have you spent time developing this passion?

There are many parts that make us individuals. How has a specific part of your identity (race, culture, first generation college student, gender, etc) impacted your academic development or shaped your academic aspirations?

Please describe a significant challenge you have faced and how you overcame it. (This challenge can be personal, academic, or social).

If you could develop, invent, or innovate anything to change the world for the better or improve the lives of others, what would it be, and why?

(OPTIONAL) Is there any other information you would like to share with us that is not presented elsewhere in your application?

Funnily, the MIT summer program application is much more essay heavy than the MIT college application! However, this app will be great practice for other university apps. All of these prompts are similar to previously discussed topics, so scroll up!

After you’ve drafted and polished responses to the five required essays, think about which qualities and information each is conveying. Is there anything else key about you that the admissions committee should know? That’s what the sixth essay is for! Think about things like leadership, service, relevant experience, creativity, empathy, tenacity, flexibility, and independence in learning. Again, review the program’s mission statement and review all of the program details to get a solid feel for what they’re looking for in an applicant.

University of Pennsylvania - Wharton’s Leadership in Business World

ESSAYS: One required 450-word (maximum) essay and one optional 300- to 400-word essay

Required: Describe the most important relationship in your life. What is your contribution to this relationship?

Optional: Why do you want to attend LBW?

For the first prompt, you want to go into it with a value in mind. What characteristic, trait, or moral are you valuing by highlighting this person and your relationship? How are you showing how you contribute meaningfully to the relationship? Once you’ve answered these questions, see how you can show (not tell!) these answers through your description and story.

For the second—which you should absolutely do!—follow the previous instructions for similar essays about fit with a given program.

Yale University - Young Global Scholars

DEADLINE: 2/6/2019

ESSAYS: One 500-word and two 200-word essays

Write about an example of social inequality. What do you see as a primary cause of this inequality? (500 words)

What is a topic that you find fascinating and are interested in exploring? (200 words)

We want to learn more about your background, beliefs, values, and/or the important people in your life. Please tell us about something that has influenced you and articulate how it has shaped you. (200 words)

Instead of “fit” essays, we have character/issue essays. However, you can work fit into the second essay easily. Your topic should be relevant to something you can explore or pursue at YGS.

The first essay should be more issue focused, highlighting your incisive ability to analyze and think critically as well as empathetically. This is the largest and most important essay. Consult with YGS website to familiarize yourself with the program’s values and mission statement.

The final essay is a character essay, meant to showcase a quality of yours that will show your depth and meaningful growth as a student and person. However, it is the briefest essay, so you’ll want to be direct. Hone in on a thesis and one to two supporting examples.

Boston University - RISE Program

DEADLINE: 2/14/2019

ESSAYS: Three essays ranging from 200 to 300 words

Why you selected your field of interest and what you would like to research (300 words)

Your background (250 words)

Why you want to attend the RISE program (200 words)

These three essays are similar to those we’ve previously discussed. The first and third are all about establishing fit: you with the program AND the program with you. The second, while lacking guidance, is meant for you to articulate how you’ve overcome challenges and taken advantage of opportunities. What support have you had? Have your passions been encouraged? Again, think about what message you want to send to the admissions committee here.

Stanford University - Stanford Institutes of Summer Medical Research Program

DEADLINE: 2/23/2019

ESSAYS: Two 3500-character (maximum; ~500 words) essays

What are your reasons for applying to SIMR? Please summarize the reasons that you are applying for the SIMR Program, how your participation in the program fits into your future educational and career objectives, and why you feel you are a good candidate for the program. You may also discuss your institute/area of research preferences and personal goals.

Please respond to one of the following prompts (a OR b)

At Stanford, we are committed to increasing the diversity (broadly defined) of students in the sciences and engineering. Please describe how your interests and background (in terms of culture, class, race, gender, ethnicity, work, hardships that you’ve faced or life experiences) would contribute to that diversity.

Please describe a high school extracurricular activity or internship/work experience that has had a significant impact on you. We are particularly interested in hearing about how this experience shaped your character and what lessons you brought away from it.

The first prompt is a classic “fit” essay. Follow their guidance and be sure to expand on your answers with supporting details. This essay is meant to be up to 500 words, so break it down into smaller pieces if you’re struggling with length. Write 150 words about why you’re interested in the program and research opportunities, 150 about your relevant educational and career goals, and 150 about your fitness as a candidate. Of course, make sure these all tie together cohesively.

For the second essay, think about which prompt would be most advantageous for you to answer. Have you overcome hardships or lack of opportunities due to your background? How have you sought out and fought for your education? What does participating in this program mean to you? How will you contribute to representation in your field and how would that inspire others in the future? If you don’t feel like that prompt is right for you, or you feel like you have a relevant and meaningful experience to share, answer the second option. How did this opportunity change you and your goals? How did it stimulate your intellectual curiosity? Did it cement anything for you or set you on your current trajectory? Does this program tie in with continuing that momentum?

National Institute of Health (US. Dept. Health and Human Services) - Biomedical Research HS Summer Program

ESSAY: A cover letter describing the applicant's research interests and career goals

Helpful advice from the NIH website:

Your cover letter is your opportunity to “speak” persuasively to those who read your application.

Scientists are busy people. Keep your cover letter brief, focused, and succinct; it should be no longer than two pages. Say what is important, but nothing more.

Tailor your cover letter to the particular application you are completing. Why do you want to participate in this specific program? How do your skills and experiences make you the perfect match for the program? Show that you have done your homework.

Tell us how this program will help you prepare for a science- or health-related career. How has your unique life experience shaped your goals for the future? Write about hardships that you have had to overcome and challenges you see yourself facing in the future.

Pay particular attention to the way in which you describe your research interests. Institute and Center Selection Committees will review applications. It is likely that many of them will search the application database for individuals with whom they share an interest. If you are willing to work on several areas, it might be useful to mention them all specifically to increase your chances of a “match.”

How have you been a leader at your school and in your community? Write about how these and other experiences show your leadership potential. Help us understand your commitment to continued self-improvement and learning.

Do not present material that is included in your resume except perhaps to highlight your major accomplishments.

Be specific. Remember that examples, stories, and details are likely to stick with the reader. It is better to provide an example that illustrates your ability to work in a team than to state that you are a team player.

Following the NIH’s tips will be the most helpful here. Again, reiterating your fit with the program (both what you are bringing with your experience and background as well as how the program will enrich your understanding and further your career and educational goals) is key.

The Concord Review: The Complete Guide To Getting In

The Concord Review is the most prestigious journal for high school students in the social sciences. As William Fitzsimmons, long-time Dean of Admissions at Harvard College, put it “A simple fact that an essay has been published by The Concord Review is something that’s impressive to the committee , just as the committee can be impressed when a scientist or mathematician does well in an international competition.”

The Concord’s Review’s prestige comes from its high level of selectivity (currently less than 5%), focus on quality, and long track record of winners going on to top universities. In 2010, 10% of all students published in the journal had gone to Harvard College . As the Concord Review describes , many authors will attach their Concord Review in their application. Of students who have been published, they have “gone on to Brown(35), University of Chicago(36), Columbia(31), Cornell(21), Dartmouth(24), Harvard(152), Oxford(17), Pennsylvania(30), Princeton(76), Stanford(86), Yale(123).”

So, what is the Concord Review and how can you build a paper that is accepted? In this guide, we’re going to go through what the Concord Review is, what it looks for in papers, and what you need to do to stand a chance.

What is the Concord Review | A brief history

The Concord Review was founded in 1987 by Will Fitzugh when he was a teacher at Concord-Carlisle High School in Massachusetts. The goal of the journal was to introduce more students to long-form history writing. At the time, he reached out to a few thousand high schools in the United States and their respective history teachers and requested submissions to the journal. Papers began to come in and Fitzugh launched the first journal.

Since then, the journal has grown in its scale and number of submissions. Though the Concord Review does not report exact numbers of its submissions, in 2020, 44 student papers were published of an estimated 900 papers submitted . The journal is considered to be the most prestigious competition for students interested in history, equivalent, as Harvard’s Admission Dean Fitzsimmon’s noted, to a student in mathematics winning a national math competition.

How selective is the Concord Review?

The Concord Review is ranked as most selective by our team, due to its acceptance rate of around 5% in most recent years. The quality of the papers that are published is also very high, with the average length of papers in the past year at 9000 words. A qualitative assessment of the quality of the papers, also indicates significant time invested and a high level of writing.

Essay Requirements | What does the Concord Review look for in papers? The Concord Review gives somewhat broad requirements on their website. We’ll talk below about what else you’ll need to do.

Essay Requirements

Paper must be written in secondary school.

You must be the sole author

The paper must be in English and may not have been previously published

Essays should be in the 4,000-6,000 (or more) word range, with Turabian (Chicago) endnotes and bibliography. The longest paper we have published was 21,000 words (on the Mountain Meadows Massacre).

Essays may be on any historical topic, ancient or modern, domestic or foreign, and must be submitted electronically.

Essays should have the notes and bibliography placed at the end (Chicago Style).

More informally (but implicitly true), the essay must be

Thoroughly researched (e.g.,, aa minimum of 10 distinct sources)

Well-written and clear

Minimum of 6000 words, but on average 9000 is the average length published.

Submission Process:

As the website describes “The Concord Review is published quarterly, and issues arrive in September, December, March and June. Essays are eligible for at least the next four issues.” In general, you will hear back about a month before the publication.

In other words, after submitting to the Concord Review, the timeline for hearing back may be up to a year after submission, but is usually faster if you are accepted. To submit your paper, you have to create an author member account , which costs $70 for the electronic fee. This also gives you access to the past year’s essays.

10 Tips to Create An Essay That Gets In | Concord Review

1. Pick a topic that you can go deep in

The Concord Review is not only interested in quality, but also in quantity (i.e., length of paper, amount of research done, etc.). That means that you are going to have to spend dozens of hours reading about a single historical event or area.

If that’s the case, choose something that you actually enjoy and could read about. The Concord Review accepts all types of historical areas – from ancient Chinese dynasties, to Enlightenment Era Europe, to World War II USA. So, choose something that you find truly interesting and go deep.

2. Make your topic specific & your thesis clear

Think about your paper as trying to make a contribution to the historical field. To do that, you’ll need to pick something specific. To give some example of past TCR papers, these have included an analysis of John Law and his effect on the French Monetary system, a look at the Iconoclasm of the Taiping Rebellion (Iconoclasm means the destruction of icons/monuments/idols of another religion.), or a look at the persecution of Buddhists in the Tang Dynasty from the perspective of a single Japanese monk (Ennin).

Note how these topics often focus on a single individual, historical event, or phenomena. John Law was a revolutionary economist who helped shape our modern thinking about the concept of money. He also shaped French monetary policy in the 18th century. A paper on the French economy in the 18th century probably would be too large, but a paper on John Law and his influence can be a great fit.

Here is an example thesis statement from the 2020 winner, “ Buddhism in Tang China ” by Jiwon Lee.

Thus, the paper aims to develop the argument that the personal records of the foreign monk Ennin contain invaluable information on how the persecution impacted the general Buddhist clergy; without him, these descriptions might have never been known to contemporary historians.”

3. Write a lot – length matters (And so does depth!)

Throughout the Concord Review website there are references to the length of student papers. The past year’s essays have all hovered closer to 9000 words (one was over 20,000 words!) . The Concord Review was founded by Will Fitzhugh, in part, to encourage students to write long-form historical work. So, this journal looks positively on longer length papers.

The key is not simply to “write a lot,” but rather to build up a deep insight into a topic and field that you can write about at length. This requires reading broadly about the topic and developing your own unique thesis.

4. Reference other historians & extend on their work

When you are writing, it’s important to show that you understand what other historians have approached this topic and what they have said. By noting what other historians have written, you’ll be able to show what the current state of knowledge is in the field. You can then add on your own distinct perspective.

One great example of how to do this is in Jingxuan Lin’s 2020 Concord Review essay “Iconoclasm in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom”.

Fortunately, over the past two decades, historical works such as the monographs by Thomas Reilly, Carl Kilcourse and Xia Chuntao have begun to shed light on the religious culture of the Taiping. However, many critical components of Taiping religion still lack sufficient attention. In particular, while almost every account of the Taiping Kingdom touches on its aggressive iconoclasm, Xia Chuntao remains the only scholar to have specifically and systematically analyzed Taiping iconoclasm and traced its development through the history of the movement.9 However, Xia’s work was primarily descriptive rather than analytic, and many of its assertions, which will be explored in this paper, appear to be insufficiently supported by the available evidence

Note how Lin shows a command of the other historians, then describes how their work will respond to this gap in the current literature. To do this, you need to read widely on the topic. In most winning essays, there are a minimum of ten distinct historical works cited and usually more than 15.

5. Have a thesis

It’s important that you have a point of view. Usually, the structure of Concord Review papers follows an abstract, introduction, main section, and then conclusion. In many papers, the thesis statement comes at the end of the introduction. Here’s an example from the same paper that came at the end of the introduction section.

Therefore, this paper will explore Taiping iconoclasm through the following question: With what significance did the Taiping Kingdom’s iconoclasm enhance or hinder its ability to garner and consolidate political support? To answer this question, this paper will trace the development of Taiping iconoclastic policy and evaluate the reactions of various affected social groups.

Note how this thesis statement sets out an agenda for the paper “What was the importance of iconoclasm in the Taiping Kingdom’s.” The thesis then outlines how it is going to address that question “By looking at the development of Taiping’s iconoclast policies and how other social groups reacted.”

6. Read Examples of Past Winning Essays

The best way to see what is expected of Concord Review winning essays is to see what past winning essays have done. The website has some example essays which you can see by signing up for the newsletter. Unfortunately, these essays are primarily from the early 2000s and so don’t really reflect the level or rigor of the most recent few years. A better bet is to first sign up to be an Author Membe r to see the past essays and to submit one of your own. The cost for this is $70, but gives you access to past essays from the last year.

7. Use a wide variety of historical sources for the essays

When writing your paper, first begin by reading historical perspectives on this issue. One good way to start is to find a book on the topic of your interest. Then while you are reading the book, note what research papers or other books they are citing. Put those other books on a list and identify the ones that come up the most often. That’s your next set of resources.

In total, most winning essays in the past year have had about 15 distinct historical sources in their bibliography. This probably does not mean that all 15 of those sources were fully read, it probably does imply that the author has read deeply at least 3 or 4 of these sources on the topic and has used those to find an additional 10 sources to cite throughout the paper.

8. Follow the abstract, introduction, main content, conclusion format

Most of the papers in the Concord Review follow the same format. They start with either an introduction or an abstract and then an introduction. The introduction frames the main topic and sets the scene for the rest of the paper. At the end of the introduction, usually a thesis statement is introduced that then guides the rest of the paper.

From there, the main section involves the primary analysis of the paper. This is usually broken into a number of smaller chunks to keep the reader engaged and following the broader argument. Sometimes this also involves a narrative description of the historical figure in question. The paper then usually ends with a short conclusion. You should try to innovate on the analysis and the writing quality (more on that next), not as much on the structure.

9. Write, write, and rewrite

All of the Concord Review essays that are selected showcase a level of writing that is difficult to accomplish at first try. Instead, each of these papers clearly show a significant amount of time writing and rewriting. As you work on your essay, make sure to allocate time to rewriting your essay and getting feedback from others. This will be critical for you to successfully write an essay that gets accepted!

As an example of thoughtful writing, here is the introductory paragraph of Jack Tae Hyun Yoon’s 2016 winning essay “John Law: Murderer, Economist, Statesman.” Louis XIV’s (1643-1715) absolutist France was an authoritarian paradise: “L’etat, c’est moi,” declared the so-called Sun King as he consolidated France’s place as the leading power of Europe. Indeed, the state—with all its various wars and monuments—was the personification of Louis XIV’s towering ego. Yet by the King’s death in 1715, the vast expenses of financing wars such as the costly War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) and building massive construction projects such as the palace at Versailles had left behind a staggering national debt of 2,800 million livres... Nevertheless, while economic turmoil meant hardship for the vast majority of the nation, in the eyes of daring speculators, it signified opportunity, and France met its very own daredevil financier in the form of a mysterious Scotsman named John Law (1671-1729). While Law’s economic system foreshadowed several modern economic policies, its decline served as an early reminder that money is not physical wealth, but rather human confidence in an idea.

10. Prepare alternative publications and competitions to submit to

Ultimately, the Concord Review is prestigious because it is hard to get in. Even with all of the above preparation, it’s very possible that you won’t be accepted to the journal. In that case, be prepared and think of proactive ways to use your essay. After you’ve spent dozens of hours on the project, you shouldn’t let it go to waste. You can identify other history essay competitions, other student journals, or local places for you to publish your work (note that you can’t submit the same article to the Concord Review and another journal. But, you could adapt that piece and submit it somewhere else!). The key is that you don’t let the time you spent on the project go to waste!

One extra tip: Find a mentor

For a long project like this, it’s important to have someone to push your thinking and writing. A history teacher could be a great mentor here or you could identify a history researcher, who can give you the researcher perspective. You want this person to give you direct feedback and to help you shape your thesis, writing, and research process.

These tasks gave us a chance to work in teams and know each other well. After the hard work, we were served delicious but simple food. We were taken into the woods to hike and explore nature and its elements. There we were taught about the importance of various vegetation and we also learnt about the local wildlife. While hiking in the dense and endless woods we received a chance to explore the intricacy and wonders of nature.

Virtual Writing Camp is an excellent way for teens ages 13-19 to explore a variety of writing genres within a supportive community of educators, authors, and peers. Whether your teen is an avid author or penning their first piece, we welcome their participation and will provide personalized feedback to accommodate different skill levels and strengths.

Yes. For camps that entail writing in a group on our website, the dedicated team of Write the World (WtW) trained site moderators will monitor young writers’ content following established guidelines. WtW is committed to maintaining a supportive writing community for its members.

Campers will work in small cohorts of about 20-25 teens to maintain cohesion and support community building.

WtW Virtual Writing Camps are led by members of the WtW team, trained authors and educators who work with our global community of young writers year-round. You can learn more about your teen’s teacher(s) on the product page of your chosen Write the World camp.

We will host 90-minute synchronous camp sessions, involving interactive writing activities, through video conferencing via Zoom each day. (Note: in most cases, these will take place from 11a.m.-12:30p.m. ET, but we will attempt to accommodate different time zones; if necessary, sessions will be recorded for those individuals who cannot make the live meetings). Then, in most cases, your teen will have a specific set of prompts and/or peer reviews to complete each day. This self-guided writing should consume approximately 2 hours each day, depending on your teen’s pace and approach, for a total of approximately 4 hours of camp engagement each day.

Participants may cancel their registration for the camp at any time up to 10 days prior to the first day of the camp, and they will be entitled to a refund of the fees paid, less a $50 cancellation fee. Any cancellations made within 10 days of the first day of the camp will not be eligible for a refund. The participant must notify the camp organizer of the cancellation by email, and the date of receipt of such notification will be considered the date of cancellation. The camp organizer reserves the right to cancel the camp in case of any unforeseen circumstances, in which case participants will be entitled to a full refund of the fees paid.

Applications must include a Transcript and a Preliminary Research Proposal .

Prepare your preliminary research proposal before filling out your application. The  proposal  must  include:

• one  paragraph  describing  your  topic  of  interest 
• three  questions  you  would  like  to  answer  about  your  topic 
• a  list  of  five  sources  that  you  plan  to  use  in  your  research.  Those  sources  must  include  at  least  1  book  (not  a  textbook)  among  them.

Be prepared to complete your application in one sitting. You will not be able to save your entries for later completion.

Cancellation policy: Until 2/28/2022: 100% refund March 1 - March 31, 2022: 50% refund April 1 – April 30, 2022: 25% refund. After May 1, 2022: No refund will be made for any reason.

While the TCR History Camp provides first-rate personal coaching on serious History research papers, participation cannot guarantee publication. The Concord Review selects about 5% of the papers submitted. While we welcome submissions from students who have attended the TCR Summer Programs, their papers will be considered alongside other papers submitted by diligent students from many countries.

‘Crip Camp’ Review: After Those Summers, Nothing Was the Same

This feel-good documentary recounts the ties of a Catskills summer camp to American disability rights activism in the 1970s.

No matter how fondly you recall your time at sleepaway camp, chances are your experiences weren’t as formative as the ones recounted in “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution,” a documentary streaming on Netflix . The film, directed by a former camper, Jim LeBrecht, and Nicole Newnham, makes the case that a Catskills summer camp for the disabled fostered a sense of community and creativity that fed directly into the American disability rights movement in the 1970s.

Camp Jened, founded in 1951 and shut down after the summer of 1977, appears in many respects to be like any other summer camp from the free-love era, with warm-weather flings and arguments over dining-hall meals. But it was also, for many of the campers, a place where they could live in a free atmosphere with others who had a disability, and where the friendships they cultivated boosted their confidence.

Jened campers got the same tough-love approach that kids at any camp would get. As Lionel Je’ Woodyard, a former counselor, explains, “You wouldn’t be picked to be on a team back home, but at Jened, you had to go up to bat.” An African-American from Mobile, Ala., Je’ Woodyard remembers seeing similarities in the treatment of blacks in the South and the shunning of the disabled.

“Crip Camp” draws extensively on terrific contemporaneous black-and-white footage shot by a collective called the People’s Video Theater , for which participants were invited to speak their minds. But even more than those activist videos, “Crip Camp” unfolds from a perspective of lived experience. The failure to recognize the disabled as sexual beings becomes a recurring theme. Denise Sherer Jacobson, who has cerebral palsy, says that as an adult she had a healthy appendix removed because a surgeon didn’t consider the symptoms of gonorrhea.

Indeed, despite the film’s title, the early scenes, focusing on the camp, turn out to be a kind of a getting-the-band-together story for the post-camp years, when several Jened alumni became nationally visible activists and resettled around Berkeley, Calif. Judy Heumann had sued for discrimination in New York after she was denied a license to teach and became a leader in San Francisco in the 504 Sit-In of 1977, when activists demanded federal regulations guaranteeing civil rights for the disabled . (Heumann also served as a special adviser under President Barack Obama, who, along with Michelle Obama, is one of this film’s executive producers.)

Newnham and LeBrecht deftly juggle a large cast of characters past and present, accomplishing the not-so-easy task of making all the personalities distinct, and a build a fair amount of suspense in their nearly day-by-day account of the sit-in. LeBrecht, who appears as a talking head (a longtime sound designer, he also contributed to the movie’s audio mix), notes that this was no ordinary demonstration. Protesters had to persist without access to necessities like catheters or backup ventilators.

“Crip Camp” repeatedly links the struggles of the disabled to other fights for civil rights. The Black Panthers brought in hot meals to keep the protesters fed. HolLynn D’Lil, a journalist who became a paraplegic after a road accident, says that her change in perspective taught her that disabled rights were rights for everyone.

Ultimately, “Crip Camp” has a universal message: Inspirations that begin in youth can lead to radical, world-changing results. At the end, a number of former campers reunite at the camp’s unprepossessing present-day site. They see something more, and so will you.

Halifax Regional Municipality is expanding one of its inclusive summer programs, but some families who have children with disabilities say the recent changes aren't enough. 

Most families can register for up to eight weeks of camp through the municipality, but kids who require one-on-one support like 12-year-old Lucy Langley are limited to three weeks.

"It's not equitable, it's not inclusive and it doesn't make sense to me," said Heather Langley, Lucy's mother and caregiver. 

Lucy, who has Wolf-Hirschorn syndrome, autism and epilepsy, loves going to camp, but she requires around-the-clock care. She's attended HRM summer camps for several years, and Langley said she's impressed by the staff who always ensure Lucy is safe and has fun.

But Langley desperately wishes Lucy had the chance to go to camp for more than three weeks just like her older daughter, who is neurotypical, always did. 

"That's a significantly better environment than me hiring one person to take her around by herself," said Langley. "She should be in the community. She should be with other children and having fun. That's what kids want to do in the summer."

This year, 130 kids are registered for HRM's inclusive camps and there are more than 50 on the waitlist, according to Ryan Nearing, a public affairs advisor for the municipality. That's up from 117 inclusive requests in 2023.

Deputy Mayor Cathy Deagle Gammon raised the issue at a February budget committee meeting.

"There is a significant amount of families — two-income families — that become one-income families in the summer. People that become part-time employees, as opposed to full-time," Deagle Gammon said, referring to parents and guardians who must take the summer off if they can't find inclusive camps or child care.

The municipality's 2024-25 budget, approved Tuesday, includes $205,700 to "increase access to recreation inclusion support" and expand Ready for Rec, a five- to six-hour a day summer program for youth who need additional support and accommodations.

Earlier this week, an HRM spokesperson told CBC News that municipal staff couldn't speak to the proposed budget before it was approved, but according to a Feb. 6 report , the money would allow Ready for Rec to expand from three to five locations. This could make room for about 20 more participants.

The February report also found that offering four weeks instead of three weeks of inclusive camp over the summer would require a "large increase in staffing, an increase in wages and increased overall capacity (space) in camps," and therefore would not be feasible this year. 

Parents can request more than three weeks, but there's no guarantee. That leaves families like the Langleys left to fill in the gaps.

Langley and her husband often have to take separate vacations from their full-time jobs to make sure someone can take care of Lucy for the weeks she's not in camp. 

"It's like being penalized for wanting to be part of the workforce and be a taxpayer, and having a child with a disability," Langley said.

For families like Keith Lawlor's, there are additional challenges. 

His 13-year-old son William has severe autism and is non-verbal. He's attended HRM's inclusive camps for years, and Lawlor said he's always looked forward to seeing the other kids and staff.  

But this year, Lawlor said William has aged out of the camps and is only eligible for the Ready for Rec program, which runs daily between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Lawlor said this is too much of a hassle, since he and his wife work full time and would need to hire someone to take William to and from the program. They decided on Monday to take William's name off the list.

"My wife and I are always saying that we're in a constant state of grieving that our child doesn't get the — quote, unquote — normal life that every other child should get," said Lawlor.

Instead of going to camp this year, William's parents will spend thousands of dollars on a respite worker to care for him at home throughout the summer. 

"For him to be home alone with no other children around — that's a huge loss for him," said Lawlor. 

"I don't know what the answer is as far as funding, but I know they need to look at more than $200,000. That's a totally inadequate number." 

Next summer when Lucy turns 13, Langley will be in the same predicament as Lawlor. 

"It shouldn't be a stressful burden on parents like me during the summer to be, you know, scraping and scrounging to find care for our kids," she said.
