Realistic workers thrive in interactive workplaces with a focus on hard skills. These employees are typically practical, task-oriented, and hands-on. A realistic workspace is regimented, with clear expectations and the necessary tools to do their jobs.

Industry: Healthcare, technology, engineering

Investigative environments require research, critical thinking , and experimentation, like labs and innovative tech companies. Curious thinkers benefit from this open and collaborative environment where they can actively discuss solutions and challenge each other’s reasoning.

3. Artistic

Great for: Creatives

Industry: Advertising, design, creative arts

An artistic work environment nurtures people who thrive on innovation, experimentation, and personal expression. Workers need an open, flexible environment that allows them to work collaboratively or individually at their own pace, providing structure only when necessary.

Great for: Collaborative workers

How to interpret Holland’s environments

Keep in mind that not every workplace will fit into one of Holland’s vocational environments, and his theories may not apply to independent workers. While each environment is not inherently harmful, any of them can become a hostile work environment if you use unhealthy motivation techniques to get the job done, negating your efforts to create a positive workplace.

Employees work best in positive environments, and these come in all shapes and sizes. Some employees find a social atmosphere invigorating, while others might find a quiet, zen-like environment more effective.

A reward-based carrot-and-stick method might boost productivity for one group, whereas others might prefer a more cooperative model. 

Get to know your team, and learn their preferences. You can collaborate with them to find the correct balance and foster a positive environment that works for the group.

Researching different types of work environments can help you narrow down which one will most benefit your team, but that’s only part of the job.

7) Give Your Team A Variety Of Workspace & Seating Options

With the ubiquity of mobile technology, employees are no longer tied exclusively to their desks. In fact, some of their best work may occur elsewhere in the office. 

Employees recognize that a change of scenery — or just a change from seated to standing — is an effective way to keep their creative juices flowing and their energy levels high. You can incorporate this new mobility into your office layout by providing employees with a variety of workspace and seating options. 

Give your employees the flexibility they crave by incorporating adjustable-height desks, multi-person tables, stools, and a variety of other seating options into your office environment.

8) Wind Down And Get Inspired At The Same Time

On Friday afternoon, gather your team together , uncork a bottle of wine or pop the top on a can of beer, and talk about the work week gone by. Share problems you’ve encountered, solutions you came up with, or new processes or technology that made things easier. 

This is a productive way to wind down, solve problems, and get inspired all at the same time.

9) Set Aside Quiet Areas For Focus

Another essential component of a productive office environment is the presence of quiet areas for focus and concentration . This may be where your employees’ desks are set up, or it may be another corner of the room entirely. 

We recommend pushing the quiet work area to one corner or one end of your office space. Then arrange other areas according to increasing noise levels. Try to keep the quiet areas as far away from the collaboration and socialization areas as possible to prevent the activity in the latter from becoming a distraction.

10) Create Collaboration Spaces

11) Incorporate A Training Space Into Your Layout

Training is an essential component of work in the 21st century. Well-trained employees are happier and more productive because they are confident in their ability to get the job done right the first time. 

That being said, whether you’re introducing your employees to new workflows or getting them familiar with new software, you’re going to need a space dedicated to training.

One solution to this is to provide plenty of windows within your office environment. Windows let in natural light and help reduce the need for electric lighting (thereby saving your business money).

Unfortunately, not every office has enough windows so that everyone can work without a lamp. At night or during overcast days, you may need to turn on the fluorescent lights in order to get any work done.

You can, however, install those lights in such a way as to control how many you use at any one time. Maybe you only need one or two throughout the whole office, or one in the quiet work area and one in the collaboration area.

Another solution is to incorporate new technologies that allow your office lighting to mimic the natural light outside. And that natural light changes as the day progresses.

Adaptive lighting automatically changes according to the time of day. In the morning, it emits cooler tones, while in the afternoon, it emits warmer tones. This can help your team maintain their energy levels and focus even during dreary weather.

The lack of comfort due to workplace environment impact could trim down job performance and organizational productivity. Literature reviews indicate that ergonomic workplace environment that is strongly associated with the job performance. Employees' perceptions to be examined by the organizations to ensure the excellent job performance. Thus, 295 officers were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling with twosection questionnaire. The data were analyzed using statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) and analysis of a moment structure (AMOS) software. The research findings show that acoustic is the most crucial factor (0.928) followed by lighting (0.898), workstation design (0.846), working hours (0.670), and chair (0.563). Ventilation is still significant to the whole environment although scored the lowest coefficient value (0.385). These findings provide valuable information to organizations in their attempts to sustain the human resources so that they are always competitive and productive in facing the challenges of the environmental change.
