Apple event showcases new iPad Air, iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard and other updates

Apple revamped its iPad lineup during the tech company's May event.

Today's reveal was "the biggest day for iPad since it's introduction," Tim Cook said as the presentation began.

The iPad Air and iPad Pro got significant upgrades, and Apple also introduced a new Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard for the devices. Apple also lowered the price on the existing iPad 10-inch, which will now start at $349.

Livestreaming of the event, called "Let Loose," was available on Apple's YouTube channel , as well as its website.

We also recapped the Apple event across social media platforms, which you can view above and on USA TODAY's YouTube channel .

Here's what was announced at Apple's May event:

Apple Pencil Pro

Apple introduced a new Apple Pencil Pro to pair with the new iPad Pro and new iPad Air devices.

You can squeeze the pencil to bring up a selected tool, and the pencil will have a gyroscope for precise control of the tool you are using.

The new Pencil Pro will also now support FindMy, so you can locate it in the Find My app if you've misplaced it. Similar to the previous Pencil, Pencil Pro carries and charges magnetically.

The new Apple Pencil Pro starts at $129, and will be available next week.

New Magic Keyboard

The Magic Keyboard has been redesigned to be thinner and lighter to work with the new, thinner iPad Pro, Apple says.

It will come in two colors to match the new Pro, and will have a function keys row and an aluminum trackpad.

The Magic Keyboard will come in two sizes, with the 11-inch starting at $299 and the 13-inch starting at $349.

New iPad Pro

The new iPad Pro , which will be available in silver and space black, will have a display using two OLED panels, which Apple is calling Tandem OLED.

Both sizes of the iPad Pro will feature the new display technologies.

The iPad Pro will also now have the new M4 chip — which was also introduced in the presentation — jumping all the way from the M2, which Apple says will make the device "four times faster."

The camera has also been updated, which can help with document scanning.

The new iPad Pro models will be available next week, with the 11-inch starting at $999 and the 13-inch starting at $1299.

New iPad Air

The new Apple iPad Air will now come in two sizes: an 11-inch display and a larger 13-inch display. Both will have the updated M2 chip.

Other key changes: the front-facing camera will now be on the landscape edge and the iPads will have spatial audio.

New color options include blue and purple, in addition to the existing starlight and space gray finishes.

The iPads will work with the Magic Keyboard. For storage, they are adding 512MB and 1T options.

The 11-inch iPad Air starts at $599, and the 13-inch starts at $799.

Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro updates

Creators rejoice! New updates to Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro were also announced during the May event.

For Final Cut Pro , Apple introduced a live multicam feature , in which a user can connect up to four cameras. They also announced a new app for the iPhone and iPad — Final Cut Camera — which will allow users to connect four iPhones or iPads for video shoots.

Updates to Logic Pro include new drums and effects, and it can now use machine learning to model sound in detail.

Upcoming Apple event

Today's event comes about a month before the tech company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) , which will be online June 10 to 14. Apple often announces new features and updates for its operating systems across devices, such as the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and more.

While Apple has not released any details about announcements that could be made on Tuesday, the event invitation and promotion feature illustrations and motion graphics of a hand holding what appears to be an Apple Pencil, suggesting the presentation may center on iPads and related accessories or features.

Tuesday's event is not when Apple normally unveils new features and updates for its operating systems and devices. Those are typically made at the  annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) , which is scheduled to be online June 10 to 14.

Watch Today’s Apple Event Right Here

Your spring calendar is probably looking pretty crowded already. Your vaccine appointments are coming up, the family is planning a visit, and maybe somewhere in there you'll be going on an actual in-person date—your first in quite a while. (Lucky you.)

Make room on that bursting agenda to pencil in one more event, because Apple is holding a media presentation today, April 20. The event will be livestreamed, and you can watch at home as the company shows off some new, elegantly chamfered hardware.

It's always difficult to speculate what a company as secretive as Apple could be planning as these events approach, but we can set some reasonable expectations about what we'll see at today's event based on some leaked information and some investigative reporting at other outlets. Most signs point to new iPads —specifically, new iPad Pro models and a refresh of the recently resuscitated iPad Mini. According to Bloomberg , the larger of the new iPad Pros will have a brighter, more technically advanced display, and both Pro models will have faster chips and a Thunderbolt port for attaching a wider array of accessories. Other reports indicate that we might see a new Apple Pencil on Tuesday, as well as the arrival of AirTags, the small location-reporting widgets that work with Apple's Find My app.

We're fairly certain we won't see a new iPhone, new AirPods, or any previews of macOS or iOS. The iPhone hardware is traditionally released in the fall, and the software walk-throughs are the highlight of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, which is already scheduled for June .

Apple's presentation will start at 1 pm Eastern, 10 am Pacific, on Tuesday, April 20 . You can stream it in the player at the top of this page. You can also view the stream on Apple’s website , in the Apple TV app, or on the company’s YouTube channel .

That Apple TV option is new as of last year—now that Apple has its own streaming service, it also has a dedicated video app on mobile devices, Apple TV boxes, Roku boxes, and in some smart TVs. You can open that app and find the option to stream Tuesday's event whether or not you subscribe to the monthly Apple TV+ streaming service.

We'd recommend launching the stream on your television using either your YouTube app or the Apple TV app. The company's slickly produced showcases feature lots of high-impact visuals that look good in the larger format. Besides, if you watch it on your television, that frees up your laptop for tweeting snarkily into the Apple enthusiast twitterverse.

Expect Apple's presentation to last around 60 minutes. Once the event ends, come back to WIRED for coverage that rounds up the announcements and highlights the industry trends that Apple is both responding to and advancing with its latest hardware.

Behind the scenes at Scary Fast: Apple’s keynote event shot on iPhone and edited on Mac

An iPhone 15 Pro Max on a rig captures a person sitting at a desk working on a MacBook.

Text of this article

October 31, 2023

On Monday, October 30, at Apple’s Scary Fast special event unveiling the all-new MacBook Pro with the M3 family of chips and 24-inch iMac with M3, there was an unseen star of the show working behind the scenes. All of the presenters, locations, and drone footage in the event were filmed using iPhone 15 Pro Max, the preferred smartphone for creative pros and filmmakers. Led by documentary film director Brian Oakes, known for the award-winning Jim: The James Foley Story and Living with Lincoln , Scary Fast put iPhone 15 Pro Max right in the middle of the action.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max camera system offers the best video in a smartphone, with its quality rivaling those of professional video cameras. iPhone 15 Pro Max enables creatives to capture in ProRes up to 4K60 fps to an external drive with Apple Log encoding, which allows even more detail to be preserved for post-production color grading. iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are also the first smartphones in the world to support the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES), a global standard for color workflows.

“We were able to get the same complex shots with iPhone 15 Pro Max,” says Oakes. “Everything is there to be an extension of someone’s vision or personality. The image quality of iPhone definitely democratizes the access.”

The production was advised by Apple’s Jon Carr, a Pro Workflow video specialist whose credits include Top Gun: Maverick and Terminator: Dark Fate , and Jeff Wozniak, who has worked on productions including Transformers: Dark of the Moon , Avatar , and Iron Man 2 . “This year, iPhone 15 Pro Max was supercharged with the ability to record ProRes to an external drive, and Apple Log, our flavor of a format that all of the very high-end digital cameras shoot,” says Wozniak.

“It’s pretty amazing how you can put this in the hands of someone who’s a professional director and they don’t have to change their equipment — they don’t have to change any of the things that they always do,” adds Carr.

Capturing footage with multiple iPhone 15 Pro Max devices, the team utilized the integration between iPhone 15 Pro, the Blackmagic Camera app, and Tentacle Sync, showcasing the true power of the Apple ecosystem. Connected via Bluetooth, Tentacle Sync drives timecode and enables all devices on set — including Macs and preview screens — to be synced throughout the production. Beastgrip accessories, including cages and rigs, were also used during the production.

Here’s how Scary Fast came to life behind the scenes.

iPhone 15 Pro Max with the new USB-C connector brings a huge leap in data transfer with speeds of up to 10Gbps with a compatible USB 3 cable. This supports new workflows like ProRes video recording directly to an external SSD drive, allowing the crew to review footage in near real time and make adjustments on the fly. In post, editors can also take advantage of the higher dynamic range enabled with Apple Log, bringing even more control and flexibility into color grading.

Shot under the cover of night at Apple Park, Scary Fast showcased the improvements in low-light video performance on iPhone 15 Pro Max. With ProRes Log encoding, iPhone 15 Pro Max has even more high and low light range than previous models, resulting overall in better dynamic range and better flexibility for color grading in post-production. “When I first got the footage from iPhone 15 Pro Max, I was immediately pleasantly surprised,” says Stefan Sonnenfeld, Company 3’s CEO, who colored the presentation and has worked on projects including Stranger Things , The Equalizer 3 , and Fast X . “The quality of the image on iPhone 15 Pro Max is incredible, and it’s there. And I know because I’ve done it and I’ve seen it, and we’re doing this project with it.”

Using the Blackmagic Camera app designed exclusively for iOS users, the crew was able to leverage the same interface as Blackmagic Design’s award-winning digital film cameras, which provided the same tools used in feature films, television shows, and documentaries. Available now for free on the App Store, the app adds digital film camera controls to iPhone and supports Apple Log encoding on iPhone 15 Pro Max. “We’ve done a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes working with a great third-party developer, Blackmagic Design, that has created an incredible app that allows us to have huge amounts of monitors and crew, and everybody working how they traditionally would,” says Carr.

On the set, the crew employed traditional filming techniques — even the use of drones — seamlessly with iPhone 15 Pro Max to capture the scenes and showcase the new MacBook Pro. “There’s cranes, there’s dollies, there’s all the toys that you want as a filmmaker, and everybody’s moving and has their job to do, and it’s just a very exciting and lively environment,” says Oakes.

Reflecting on the incredible versatility and ease of use of iPhone, Sonnenfeld says, “I think what I love about the iPhone is it enables everybody who uses it to have access to incredible amounts of information, and with a really intuitive operating system, so that whether it’s myself or my 7-year-old, anybody can pick it up and pretty much use it right away.”

Apple Events 2024: Apple’s event plans

Karen Haslam

Apple doesn’t participate in big industry-wide events such as CES or E3. The most valuable company in the world holds its own events, thank you very much. Several times a year, Apple invites the press and industry professionals to Apple Park to hear all about its latest products and services. Apple calls these ‘events,’ and streams them live online to millions of watchers.

In 2023 there were three such events: WWDC in June, the Wonderlust iPhone event in September and Apple’s second fall event on October 30 (or October 31 if you weren’t in the U.S.). Similarly, in 2022 Apple held three events: a spring event on March 8, WWDC on June 6, and the iPhone 14 launch on September 7. In other years Apple has held four events though. Will Apple hold four events in 2024?

Read on to find out what events and new Apple product launches the company has in store for 2024.

When is Apple’s next event?

Apple has confirmed that it will hold an event titled ‘Let loose’ on Tuesday May 7 , at 7am PT (which is 10am ET, 3pm in the UK, and 4pm in Europe).

We had all but given up hope that Apple might hold an event in the spring of 2024, but the company surprised us with an event in early May. Normally Apple’s spring events are in March or April.

At the event, Apple may reveal dates for the availability of the Vision Pro, which is yet to be released outside the U.S. Other new hardware is also expected to launch, including a new iPad Pro and iPad Air , Apple Pencil and new iPad Keyboards. We may also see a new Mac mini with M3 and M3 Pro, a new iPad mini , and 11th gen iPad , but the latter three are less likely to make an appearance.

We may also see new AirPods , or even a surprise like a HomePod with a display .

Just over a month after the May 7 event Apple will kick off WWDC with another keynote event. Apple has already announced WWDC24 will take place from June 10-14 , starting with a keynote on June 10 at 10am.

The WWDC keynote is where Apple will announce its next major operating system releases: iOS and iPadOS 18 , macOS 15, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2. Expect to hear a lot about AI this year. Apple sometimes announces new hardware at WWDC; we could see new Macs: Mac Studio M3 and Mac Pro M3. If the iPads and Mac mini aren’t announced at the spring event we expect to see them at WWDC.

What time will the next Apple event start?

The Spring event timing is a little unusual: Apple has announced that the event will kick off at 7am PT which is:

  • US: 7am (PT), 8am (MT), 9am (CT), 10am (ET)
  • Canada: 7am (PT), 8am (MT), 9am (CT), 10am (ET)
  • UK: 3pm (BST)
  • Rest of Europe: 4pm (CEST)
  • India: 7.30pm (IST)
  • Singapore and China: 11pm
  • Japan: next day at 2am (JST)
  • Australia: 11pm (AWST), 11.30pm (ACST), midnight (AEST)
  • New Zealand: next day at 2am (NZST)

The WWDC keynote will start at 10 am PT. That translates to the following times in the countries where most of our readers live:

  • U.S.: at 10 am (PST/PDT), 11 am (MST/MDT), noon (CST/CDT), 1 pm (EST/EDT)
  • Canada: as above, and 2 pm (AST/ADT)
  • U.K.: at 6 pm (GMT/BST)
  • Europe: at 7pm (CET/CEST), 8 pm (EET/EEST)
  • India: at 10.30 pm (IST)
  • Australia: Next day at 1 am (AWST/AWDT), 2.30 am (ACST/ACDT), 3 am (AEST/AEDT)
  • New Zealand: Next day at 5 am (NZST/NZDT)

How long does an Apple event last?

Apple keynotes usually last between one and two hours and feature CEO Tim Cook along with various other Apple executives. WWDC and the September event tend to be longer keynotes; the spring and late-fall events can be slightly shorter.

When does Apple usually hold events?

Apple holds three or four live or live-streamed events throughout the year where the company unveils its latest products and plans during a keynote address. They are usually held during similar times of the year:

  • March/April: Spring event
  • June: WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference)
  • September: Fall event (aka iPhone and Apple Watch launch event)
  • October/November: Late-fall event(s)

This event calendar is by no means set in stone, though, with the spring and October events being less regular. Some years, Apple doesn’t hold a spring event at all, as was the case in 2023.

The summer and September events are more predictable, with software coming at WWDC in June and iPhones and Apple Watches in September. The October event often sees Apple launch new Macs, but this is another one that changes from year to year.

New Apple Products Apple Event September

What Apple events will take place in 2024?

Here are the events we expect to see in 2024, and what could launch.

Spring event 2024

The Let Loose event will start at 7am PT on May 7, 2024.

WWDC: June 10-14 2024

WWDC will take place from June 10-14 with the event kicking the conference off at 10am on June 10, 2024.

Apple uses WWDC each year to unveil the latest versions of its operating systems, so in 2024 we’ll get a preview of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, and tvOS 18, and possibly an update to Apple’s realityOS.

New hardware sometimes makes an appearance at WWDC as well, so we may see the M3 Ultra Mac Pro and Mac Studio and any of the products we mention as potentials for the spring. Hopefully, we’ll get a date for the global Vision Pro launch if we haven’t already.

Apple’s Vision Pro headset hasn’t yet launched in locations including the U.K. Europe, Canada and Australia, so Apple could hold an event to talk about a worldwide launch. What else could we see? A new iPad mini and iPad Air as well as the M3 Mac mini . The AirPods could gain USB-C and we might even see a HomePod with a screen . We could even see Apple launch a 14-inch iPad Pro and other new iPads.

Following the keynote on the Monday, developer events and sessions will run throughout the week.

Dates for WWDC:

  • WWDC 2024: June 10-14
  • WWDC 2023: June 5-9
  • WWDC 2022: June 6-10
  • WWDC 2021: June 7-11

  • WWDC 2019: June 3-7
  • WWDC 2018: June 4-8
  • WWDC 2017: June 5-9

You can read more about WWDC date, times and everything you need to know in a separate article.

iPhone 16 launch event: September 2024

Apple always holds an event in September, and almost always uses this to announce a new iPhone and Apple Watch. (The only exception in recent memory was in 2020, as a result of Covid-related production issues. That year the iPhone was announced in October, but there was still a September event.)

Here are the past few Apple September event dates:

  • 2023: Tuesday, September 12
  • 2022: Tuesday, September 13
  • 2022: Wednesday, September 7

  • 2018: Wednesday, September 12
  • 2017: Tuesday, September 12

For more information about Apple’s September events read: Apple’s September iPhone event: Date, time, and what will launch.

October 2024 Event

There could be iPad and Mac events in October and/or November 2024. But this is a long way off so we won’t get into too much detail just yet.

In the past, Apple has held a second fall event on the following dates:

  • 2023: Monday, October 30
  • 2022: No event
  • 2021: Monday, October 18
  • 2020: Tuesday, October 13 and Tuesday, November 10

  • 2013: Tuesday, October 22
  • 2012: Tuesday, October 23
  • 2011: Tuesday, October 4

We expect Apple to launch new iPads and Macs in the late fall/autumn.

Spring event 2025

Here are the dates of the past seven Apple spring events.

  • 2024: Tuesday May 7
