Important Questions with answers asked in Previous Question Papers of Class 6 Maths

Q.1 If the perimeter of a rectangle is 26 cm and its length is 7 cm, find its breadth.

Let the breadth of the rectangle be b cm. Perimeter of the rectangle = 2 (length + breadth) 26 = 2 (7 + b) 13 = 7 + b Breadth = 13 – 7 Breadth = 6 cm

Therefore, the breadth of the rectangle is 6 cm.

Q.2 Find the value of ‘k’ if 5k – 2 = 23.

5k – 2 = 23 5k = 23 + 2 5k = 25 k = 5

Therefore, the value of ‘k’ is 5.

Q.3 If a sum of Rs. 10,000 amounts to Rs. 12,100 in 2 years at simple interest, find the rate of interest.

Let the rate of interest be ‘r’ % per annum. Simple interest = (Principal × Rate × Time) / 100 12100 – 10000 = (10000 × r × 2) / 100 2100 = 200r r = 2100/200 r = 10.5

Therefore, the rate of interest is 10.5 % per annum.

Q.4 If the height of a cone is 8 cm and its radius is 3 cm, find its curved surface area.

Curved surface area of a cone = πrl, where r is the radius and l is the slant height. l² = r² + h² l² = 3² + 8² l = √(9 + 64) l = √73 cm

Curved surface area = π × 3 × √73 Curved surface area ≈ 68.73 cm²

Therefore, the curved surface area of the cone is approximately 68.73 cm².

Q.5 If a car covers a distance of 252 km in 4 hours, find its speed.

Speed = Distance/Time Speed = 252/4 Speed = 63 km/h

Therefore, the speed of the car is 63 km/h.

Q.6 The cost of 5 notebooks and 7 pencils is Rs. 50. If the cost of 7 notebooks and 10 pencils is Rs. 80, find the cost of each notebook and each pencil.

Answer : Let the cost of one notebook be x and the cost of one pencil be y. From the first equation, we get: 5x + 7y = 50 From the second equation, we get: 7x + 10y = 80 Solving these equations simultaneously, we get: x = 10 and y = 2 Therefore, the cost of each notebook is Rs. 10 and the cost of each pencil is Rs. 2.

Q.7 Find the area of a circle whose diameter is 14 cm. (Take π = 22/7)

Answer : Given, diameter of the circle = 14 cm Radius of the circle = Diameter/2 = 14/2 = 7 cm Area of the circle = πr^2 = (22/7) x 7^2 = 154 sq. cm Therefore, the area of the circle is 154 sq. cm.

Q.8 If 2x + 3y = 15 and 4x – 5y = 10, find the value of x and y.

Answer: Multiplying the first equation by 2, we get: 4x + 6y = 30 Subtracting the second equation from the above equation, we get: 4x + 6y – (4x – 5y) = 30 – 10 Simplifying, we get: 11y = 20 y = 20/11 Substituting the value of y in the first equation, we get: 2x + 3(20/11) = 15 Simplifying, we get: 2x = (165-60)/11 2x = 105/11 x = 105/22 Therefore, the value of x is 105/22 and the value of y is 20/11.

Q.9 Find the sum of the first 25 odd natural numbers.

Answer: The first odd natural number is 1. The second odd natural number is 3. The third odd natural number is 5. And so on. Therefore, the first 25 odd natural numbers are: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49 The sum of the first n odd natural numbers is n^2. Therefore, the sum of the first 25 odd natural numbers is 25^2 = 625. Therefore, the sum of the first 25 odd natural numbers is 625.

Q.10 If the LCM of two numbers is 120 and their HCF is 5, find the two numbers.

Answer: Let the two numbers be x and y. Their LCM is 120. Their HCF is 5. We know that LCM x HCF = product of two numbers. Therefore, 120 x 5 = xy Simplifying, we get: xy = 600 Now, we need to find two numbers whose product is 600 and HCF is 5. The factors of 600 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8

The body that runs the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma programme has said “appropriate and timely measures” are being taken to remove all online posts that contain leaked exam questions , but did not disclose how many students had been caught cheating.

The IB said on Monday its investigation found that “students have engaged” in “time-zone cheating” activities. It noted on Sunday it had discovered “a very small number” of students had engaged in the practice and there was no evidence it was widespread.

“We understand technology enables sharing and distribution which amplifies the number of students posts might reach, before posts can be removed,” a spokesman said in a reply to the Post on Monday.

“Appropriate and timely measures are being taken to remove all related posts and render consequences to the students involved.”

Time-zone cheating involves students who have taken an exam sharing the questions with candidates in another part of the world who have yet to sit it. The practice is explicitly forbidden under IB policy.

While the Swiss-based IB did not reply to a question on the number of students found cheating, the Post found the leaked materials had been downloaded more than 47,000 times as of Monday afternoon.

Asked about calls for the affected tests to be cancelled and how the IB would ensure fairness to students who did not cheat, the spokesman reiterated that a formal investigation had been launched.

Those responsible would receive no marks for their exams or grades for the relevant subject, he warned.

“As an additional consequence, there will be no award of diploma certificate and involved students will be banned from resitting the examinations,” he said.

“To ensure fairness to students who didn’t cheat, the IB will carefully review individual exam responses and otherwise mark papers as usual, to ensure students who acted with integrity are not penalised.”

Asked how such an incident could be prevented in future, the spokesman said the IB strived to stay ahead of technological advancements which affected student learning as well as cultivating a culture of academic integrity.

The Post earlier discovered some questions and answers from this year’s maths papers had been shared in links posted to online forum Reddit.

Screenshots of a Telegram channel also had links to questions for business management, global politics, maths, physics, computer science, biology and chemistry.

The two-year IB diploma programme is an internationally recognised university entrance qualification. Almost 180,000 students took it globally last year.

The leaks have sparked widespread outrage among students, including those currently sitting the exams in Hong Kong, with some calling for them to be cancelled or retaken.

At least 3,600 people have signed an online petition, urging the IB to cancel this year’s exam or ensure justice for students who did not read the leaked materials.

Last year, 2,275 pupils sat IB exams in Hong Kong, up slightly from 2,213 in 2022.

This year’s assessments are being held from April 24 to May 17. The IB and the Diploma of Secondary Education are the two major university entrance exams in Hong Kong.

When are year 6 SATs 2024? Key dates for parents and pupils

When are SATs

Year 6 pupils in England will soon be taking the key stage 2 (KS2) national curriculum tests, which are often referred to as SATs.  

The assessments are used to measure school performance and to make sure individual pupils are being supported in the best way possible as they move into secondary school .   

When are SATs?  

This year, SATs will take place over four days from 13 May to 16 May 2024.

What are the tests on?   

While pupils won’t be able to see what’s on the test beforehand, t he assessments only include questions on things that children should already have been taught as part of the national curriculum.

As usual, there won’t be a test for English writing or science. Instead, this will be reported as a teacher assessment judgement.  

This is a judgement teachers will make based on your child’s work at the end of KS2.   

Does my child need to revise for SATs?  

Children shouldn’t be made to feel any unnecessary pressure when it comes to the KS2 assessments and t eachers will make sure that all pupils in their class are prepared.  

You should follow their general advice about supporting your child’s education throughout the year and ahead of the tests.  

While it is statutory for schools to hold the assessments, headteachers make the final decision about whether a pupil participates in them.   

Some pupils – for example those with special education needs or disabilities – may be assessed under different arrangements if these are more appropriate.   

If you have concerns about your child participating in the KS2 tests, you should speak to your school in the first instance.  

What if my child finds the SATs tests too difficult?  

It’s important to remember that one of the purposes of the key stage 2 assessments is to identify each pupil's strengths and the areas where they may have fallen behind in their learning as they head into secondary school.   

The results will help their new school determine in which areas your child needs the most support.   

The tests are designed to be challenging to measure attainment, including stretching the most able children. It means some pupils will find them harder than others.    

It takes three years to create appropriate tests. During the process, they’re rigorously trialled with year 6 pupils and reviewed by education and inclusion experts to make sure they’re the right difficulty level.   

The Standards and Testing Agency (STA) is responsible for developing the tests, and Ministers don't have any influence on their content.   

When will we find out the results of SATs?  

Schools will receive test results on Tuesday 9 July 2024.  

Before the end of the summer term, your child’s school will send you a report which will include test results and teacher assessment judgements.  

This should provide you with a good sense of the standard at which your child is working in each subject.  

The school will report your child’s test results as a scaled score for each subject. This is created from the number of marks your child scores in a particular test. A scaled score:  

  • below 100 means that your child may need more support to help them reach the expected standard;  
  • of 100 or more means that your child is working at, or above, the expected standard for the key stage.  

If your child is working below the overall standard of the key stage, or they have special educational needs, reporting will be different, and you should speak to your child’s teacher for more information.
