when do housing assignments come out uf

Congratulations! You’ve been accepted to UF, and you’re moving to Gainesville this fall. Now that you’re officially a Gator, it’s time to decide where you’re going to live for your freshman year.

Finding housing at the University of Florida can be difficult, especially if you are a first-year student who is not familiar with the student housing market in Gainesville.

At Sweetwater , we have helped hundreds of students find their home for the school year, and we understand how overwhelming the search for housing can be. For this reason, we are taking you through every step of the process, from what housing is available in Gainesville to whether you should live on-campus or off-campus. Ultimate Guide to Freshman Housing near UF

group boys and girls walking in the plaza of americas

There are many types of student housing to choose from, including on-campus residence halls, off-campus private dorms, and off-campus apartments. Although freshmen are not required to live on-campus, it is common for underclassmen to live in the UF dorms. If you’re not interested in the on-campus dorms, some freshmen choose to live in student housing apartments off-campus. In fact, only 22% of UF students live on campus !

On-Campus Dorms vs. Off-Campus Housing

There are three main types of housing to consider for your freshman year:

  • On-campus dorms/residence halls
  • Off-campus (private) dorms
  • Off-campus apartments

On-campus dorms are the most common option for freshmen at UF. These are owned and operated by the University of Florida. On-campus dorms come in a variety of hall layouts, including traditional, suite-style and apartment-style. Traditional halls consist of single, double and triple rooms, with a community bathroom and kitchen on the floor. Suite-style halls offer single, double suite and super suite layouts, where you’ll have a bathroom connected to your room that you share with a few suitemates. Finally, apartment-style halls are set up similar to a traditional apartment, with either a shared or private bedroom, a semi-shared or private bathroom and a kitchenette. Depending on which hall you live in, there will be variation in floor plans. I’d recommend researching each hall to decide which one you think will suit your lifestyle the best.

The private off-campus dorms are designed to create an experience similar to the on-campus dorms, but are not affiliated with the University. Off-campus dorms provide similar floor plan options to on-campus residence halls, such as suite-style or single rooms. Some of the most popular ones include Ivy House and Windsor .

Lastly, you can find numerous student housing apartments around UF. The main difference between an apartment and a traditional dorm is the size of your living space, like a kitchen and a living room. UF students who live off campus typically live on University Avenue, 13th Street or Archer Road.

Read Next: Where to Live Off-Campus Near UF

One main difference between on-campus and private dorms versus student apartments is a meal plan. On-campus and private dorms typically include a meal plan for residents. Since off-campus student apartments include kitchens, you’ll be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking your own meals.

Another difference is the length of your lease term. Dorm leases are typically nine months, running from August to May, since they are tied to the academic calendar. Student apartment leases typically last 12 months, starting in August and ending in July. On-campus dorms close for breaks when the University does, so you’ll be required to leave during Thanksgiving break, Winter break, Spring break and the summer. If you want to stay in Gainesville during breaks or over the summer, an apartment would be a better fit for you since you won’t have to move out of a dorm when it closes. This may be ideal for international or out-of-state students who can’t travel home as easily, or if you have an internship or job in Gainesville that requires you to stay for the summer.

The last difference you’ll find are the amenities at the different housing properties. On-campus dorms only include campus-wide facilities, such as the Student Rec or the libraries. On-property amenities typically include a laundry room, study areas and a social area with TVs, pool tables and other games to mingle with other freshmen.

For off-campus private dorms and student apartments, amenities will vary based on each property. However, you can typically find a fitness center, laundry rooms, study areas and a pool. Many new apartment developments will include luxury amenities, such as a rooftop pool deck, spin or yoga room, coffee shops, golf simulators and more, whereas private dorms and older student housing properties have a more basic offering of amenities.

Which is Right for Me?

To decide which housing option is best suited for you, make a list of the pros and cons of each and compare that against your lifestyle. If you enjoy cooking your own meals or value having your own bedroom and bathroom, an apartment might be best for you. If you’re planning on going home for the summer or don’t want to cook for yourself, a dorm might be a better fit for you.

You should also consider location and where you think you’ll spend the majority of your time on campus. If you’re looking to get heavily involved within campus and plan on taking many classes, living on-campus will probably be more convenient for you. However, if you’re looking to join Greek life, a spirit org or other social group, an apartment on 13th street or University Ave may be a better spot for you. If you aren’t worried about being close to campus, you can check out an apartment near Archer Road, where you’ll find slightly less expensive rates. For more information on where to live off-campus based on your lifestyle, read our guide on Where to Live Near UF if You Don’t Want to Live on Campus .

Finally, consider who you want to be surrounded by. Since freshmen typically fill the majority of on-campus and off-campus dorms, you’ll find people your age to meet and mingle with. Between resident events and passing people in the dining hall, you’re sure to meet lots of new people in your classes on campus. If you’re looking to meet a variety of people, with both upperclassmen and underclassmen, an apartment will better suit you.

As soon as you confirm your acceptance to UF, you should immediately begin looking at housing! With acceptances coming out in late February, the housing process can be competitive, especially for student apartments.

Since you’re competing with the upperclassmen who have been signing leases during the fall, you’ll want to start contacting the leasing offices as soon as possible if you’re interested in living in an apartment. Students begin signing leases as early as 12 months prior to move in, with many of the most popular apartments becoming fully leased in the spring before move in.

If you’re looking at an off-campus dorm, you should plan to sign sometime in March or April if you want to be ahead of the game.

For on-campus dorms, you can submit your housing application as soon as September, before you’re even admitted to UF. The earlier you submit your application, the higher you’ll be on the waitlist. This may help you secure your top-choice preference! Contracts will go out weekly starting in March. So, if you’re interested in on-campus housing, start your application ASAP!

On-Campus + Private Dorms

Residence halls fall in the mid-range of student housing pricing. Upon publication in January 2024, 2024-25 residence hall rates range from around $2,700 per semester for a shared space with a community bath to around $5,000 per semester for a single suite. These rates are quoted per person for one semester. These rates include room, meal plan, internet service and laundry.

Off-campus private dorms fall on the mid-to-high end of the student housing price range. If you’re looking for a shared bedroom, you can expect to pay anywhere from $600 to $1,200 per month. For a private bedroom, prices range from $989 to $1,260 per month. These rates include room, meal plan and internet service. Depending on the property, rates may also include laundry service.

Off-Campus Apartments

Rental rates can range from around $700 to $1,900 per person, per month. Though this is a seemingly wide range, how much you’ll pay in rent will vary depending on a number of different factors, including floor plan style, location, amenities, building age and room/unit features. To get accurate pricing for the properties and floor plans you’re interested in, contact their leasing staff!

Remember when thinking about your budget that dorms will be on a nine-month lease and apartments will be a 12-month lease. They also will not include meals in their pricing.

How do I find roommates as a freshman at the University of Florida?

sweetwater leasing office kitchen

As a freshman, you’ll most likely have at least one roommate. Unless you opt for a single dorm or studio apartment (which come at the higher end of the price range), your roommate will be a huge part of your first-year college experience..

The space you share with your roommates is determined by the type of housing you choose and what floor plan you live in.

For example, most dorms are set up as one room with two beds, or a “direct roommate.” In this case you will share a room with your roommate. Depending on the dorm, you may have a suite-style layout, where you and your roommate plus another set of roommates share a bathroom, or you may have a community bathroom that’s open to your dorm hall.

There are a couple different ways you have to share a space with your roommates. The first, and most traditional, is the “direct roommate.” This is where you and a roommate have one room with two beds. If you have a suite-style dorm, you’ll also have “suitemates.” You’ll share a bathroom with your suitemates, but it’s connected to your room instead of a community bath down the hall.

Most student apartments and a few UF dorms are set up apartment style, where you have your own room (and sometimes bathroom) and you share the living space and kitchen with your roommates. Think of these as “apartment-mates” instead of roommates, since you’ll be sharing the common areas instead of your private space.

Apartments primarily offer single-occupancy bed spaces in apartments ranging from one- to six-bedrooms. This means that you’d have your own room, but you might share your living area and kitchen with as many as five other roommates.

Single-occupancy bed spaces in apartments ranging from one- to six-bedrooms are the most common for student housing apartments near UF. You’ll have your own room, but share the common areas with up to five roommates. Keep in mind that the more roommates you have, the lower your monthly rate. If you’re looking for student housing on a budget, read our 8 Ways to Save Money on Student Housing Apartments in Gainesville .

Since you’ll most likely have roommates your first year, you may be wondering – how do I find them?

If you decide to live in a dorm, you’ll have the option to request a roommate or match with a roommate with similar lifestyle choices to you. If you know someone going to UF that you want to live with, or you find someone through the processes I explain below, you’ll tell the University their name and information so you’ll be placed together. This process is also the same for off-campus private dorms, but instead of contacting the university, you’ll email the property directly.

Living in a dorm is arguably the easiest property to find a roommate. You’ll have the option to request a roommate or match with a roommate with similar lifestyle choices to you. If you know someone going to UF that you want to live with, or you find someone through the processes I explain later, you’ll each input each other’s info when it’s time to submit preferences in the housing portal. For off-campus dorms, you’ll email the property directly with the same information to be placed together.

If you would prefer to be matched with a roommate, UF Housing offers a platform called RoomSync to help you search and pair with a roommate based on similar lifestyles, interests or major to you. For off-campus private dorms, you’ll fill out a roommate questionnaire and the property will try to match you with someone that suits you.

Apartments typically offer similar options, where you can sign a lease with roommates you already know, or they may be able to match you with other roommates.

If you don’t know anyone to live with, but you don’t want to leave it up to the property to match you with a roommate(s), there are some steps you can take to find a compatible roommate on your own.

The easiest and most common way to search for roommates is on Facebook or Instagram. Each freshmen class has a Facebook group that you should join so you can connect with future classmates. This is an amazing resource to look for a roommate! You can create a post for yourself, showing which property you are looking to live in, some defining character traits, what you’re interested in getting involved in on campus, and some photos of yourself! You can also look at your classmates’ posts and reach out to those that you think might be a good match. Don’t be scared to put yourself out there!

Along with the class Facebook page, there’s also a class UF Instagram page (ex: @ufclassof28 ) to search for potential roommates. You can submit the same info to this page that you did on Facebook to be highlighted on the feed!

For more information on the roommate process or how to find them, read our guide on How to Find Roommates at the University of Florida .

What are the next steps?

Once you’ve decided which housing you prefer, you’ll start the process of securing your spot! Here is a short breakdown of what to do for on- and off-campus housing.

If you’re interested in living on-campus, you should complete your housing application now! The sooner you complete it, the better chance you’ll have at getting your preferred dorm. After you complete the housing application, you’ll receive your housing contract offer in March which you’ll need to complete. After you sign the contract, you’ll then be able to submit your preference of residence hall and roommates. Lastly, the room selection process begins. Remember that your first preference may not be available by the time you get to select, so have other options in mind just in case. You can read more details on the UF Residence Hall website .

Off-campus housing works a bit differently. First, make a list of potential places you’re interested in. Then, schedule tours with the leasing staff to get more info on rates, amenities and availability. It requires a little more effort from you, but you’ll also have more control over where you end up living.

The process for off-campus housing runs a bit differently. The first step is to make a list of places you’re interested in. Next, schedule tours at the leasing office to get more info on rates, availability, and what the property offers. Though it may be a bit more effort right now, in the long run you’ll have more control over where you end up living, the floor plan style, location, etc.

Once you’ve picked the property for you, you’ll complete an application, sign a lease agreement, and pay any required fees. Then you’re all set! For more information on the process, check out our step-by-step guide on How to Sign a Lease at a Student Housing Apartment near UF .

Room Selection Update

Check this page throughout the room selection process for the latest information on available spaces.

In the spring, students have the opportunity to select their hall, room, and bedspace for the upcoming academic year in their myKU portal.

Your exact selection date depends on which student category you belong to . To participate in room selection, contract with Housing and pay your enrollment deposit by May 1.

Keep in mind that spaces are limited. It is important to have a few options in mind in case your first pick is not available at your room selection time. If your first preference is not available, pick your next best option. Then, you can put your name on a waiting list in your myKU portal in case your first preference becomes available.

Scholarship Halls

Schol Hall residents do not participate in room selection. Rooms are assigned by the students in a process determined by each hall.

New incoming residents who are selected for the schol hall community will be notified of their room assignments in June.

Pick Your Room

From private rooms to 4-person suites, you’re sure to find an on-campus option that’s right for you! Spaces fill up quickly, so it's important to have a few halls in mind when you select your room.

Image of two roommates laughing in their room.

Roommate Matching

You do not have to choose a roommate. You can simply choose your space and another Jayhawk will choose the remaining space. However, if you would like to pick your roommate, here are the steps you need to follow.

If you know who you'd like your roommate to be, follow these steps (Optional).

  • Students will be able to create a roommate pair in their housing portal beginning in mid-May. Residents will only be able to select a space with one additional person.
  • Make sure you and your potential roommate have both contracted with Housing & Residence Life and have paid or deferred your enrollment deposit before May 1.

Find a roommate with the questionnaire (Optional).

If you don't have a roommate already in mind, you have the option to complete a roommate matching questionnaire in your  myKU portal .

This questionnaire helps you find potential roommate matches based on your preferences. Utilize the bio area to further indicate information about yourself, lifestyle, and building/community preferences. The roommate report will compare your answers with other students' surveys. You will see a potential roommate's cell phone number and may use that to call or text each other.

You can find the roommate matching questions below, including a description of the question, and what would be indicative of a “yes” or “no” answer.

I plan to live in a special interest community and would like a roommate who wants to live in the same special interest community. The special interest communities are Gender Inclusive Housing, ROTC, Engineering, and Honors. (Indicate in your bio which learning community you plan to live in).

This question serves the purpose of helping a student find a roommate in the same  special interest community . For students interested in  Gender Inclusive Housing  who may not feel comfortable indicating this interest in the roommate matching portal, additional opportunities to connect with potential roommates will be shared with you by email.

Yes  – I’m planning to live in a special interest community, have completed the special interest community form in the  myKU portal , and am looking for a roommate who is living in the same special interest community.

No  – I’m not living in a special interest community

I am an upper-class student returning to KU or a transfer student seeking an upper-class roommate.

This question asks about the importance of your roommates’ year in school.

Yes  – You are an upper-class student and are seeing an upper-class roommate.

No  – You are an upper-class student or an incoming first-year student and are not interested in living with an upper-class student.

I would be a good roommate to a person who identifies as trans and non-binary, including an individual with varying gender identity, sex identity, or gender expression.

The University of Kansas and Housing & Residence Life are committed to creating and supporting representative, equitable and inclusive communities for all students, including all gender identities. For some students, gender identity does not align with biological or birth-assigned sex. Roommate, room selection and assignments processes are based on sex, with female students assigned with female students and male students assigned with male students. The purpose of this question is to help students who may identify differently to search and request potential roommates who are open to, accepting of, and comfortable living with gender-diverse roommates.

Yes  – I would feel comfortable and willing to live with a trans or non-binary person.

No  – I would not feel comfortable.

I feel comfortable living with a roommate who chooses to drink alcohol and/or congregate socially around others consuming alcohol.

Students have many social choices when they come to campus. Although it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to consume alcohol, many minors choose to do so. KU encourages healthy decision making and drinking responsibly. We want students to answer this question honestly as we are aware that alcohol use may impact roommate dynamics.

Yes  – I would feel comfortable living with a roommate who chooses to drink alcohol and or/congregate socially around others consuming alcohol.

No  – I would not feel comfortable living with a roommate who chooses to drink alcohol and or/congregate socially around others consuming alcohol.

I would be comfortable living with someone who is of a different race than me.

The University of Kansas welcomes students from various identities and backgrounds. Housing & Residence Life strives to promote inclusive communities and spaces where students are able to live authentically and have mutual respect for people of diverse gender, race, and ethnicity.

Yes  – I would feel comfortable living with a roommate who is of a different race than me. If this is important to you, include this information in your Bio.

No  – I don’t feel like I would be comfortable living with someone who is of a different race than me.

Include information that would help potential roommates learn more about you. This could include:

  • Special Interest Community
  • Buildings you would like to live in
  • Year in school
  • Pronouns, if safe
  • Hobbies and interests or what you hope to be involved in as a student
  • Cleanliness habits
  • Routine habits, such as waking up early, staying up late, etc.
  • Studying habits, such as limited noise/distractions, music playing, etc.
  • Temperature you prefer in spaces
  • In state, out of state, or not from the United States
  • Bringing an approved emotional support or service animal
  • Ways you manage and work through conflict (passive, direct)
  • Whether or not you are a smoker

Roommate Matching Questionnaire Notes

Housing & Residence Life does not place students in spaces based on race, color, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, age, ancestry, disability, status as a veteran, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and genetic information.

Housing & Residence Life does not use questionnaire information when administratively assigning students after self-assigned room selection is no longer available.

Once you've picked your roommate, follow the steps above to form a roommate group.

Remember, you don't have to choose your roommate.

During room selection, you can simply choose your space and another Jayhawk will choose the remaining space.

Note: Rates for 2024-2025 have not been determined at this time. They will be shared as soon as approved by the Board of Regents (typically June) .

TRANSFER STUDENTS

Space for transfer students is extremely limited and we encourage transfer students to explore off-campus housing options through resources such as Beyond the Diag .

Transfer students will receive an email with a link to a housing application in mid-April if you’ve paid your enrollment deposit. Submission of a housing contract does not guarantee on-campus housing.

Important Information FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

Submitting an application is not a contractual agreement. You are legally bound to a room only when you sign your contract.

If you are 17 years old by the time your contract starts, you will be placed with a first-year student.

Michigan Housing is committed to a policy of equal opportunity for all persons and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, religion, height, weight or veteran status.

Students participating in the School of Education's LEAPS program (Learning, Equity and Problem Solving for the Public Good) should complete the General Application only. LEAPS students are housed on the Marygrove Campus.  LEAPS students can check out the Housing LEAPS FAQ here

Housing Application Instructions

We want to help you find a home that is right for you. To prepare for the application, please read through the guidelines below. To learn more about residence halls, consult our Residence Halls Comparison . You can also learn more about some specific options by visiting our Additional Living Options page. When you receive your application you will have 30 days to return it

Room Type: The majority of rooms available for first-year students are double occupancy. Although there is no guarantee of a particular room type, there are some single occupancy and suite style units. Both of these options are generally at a higher rate than a double occupancy unit. Rate information available here .

CORRIDOR PREFERENCE

Campus Neighborhoods: U-M residence halls are located in one of two neighborhoods: Central Campus and North Campus. The North Campus neighborhood residence halls, Bursley and Baits II, house primarily first-year students.

Additional Living Options

Living learning communities.

Michigan Learning Communities: Michigan Learning Communities provide smaller communities that focus on the exploration of a specific field of study. Applications are due by May 6. MLC Application is available now here .

Theme Communities: Theme Communities offer residents a scaffold of new learning opportunities and collaborative activities. They allow students to pursue passions, explore new interests in a co-curricular setting, and ready themselves to apply their learning to a complex and diverse world. Apply here .  Students admitted to MLC programs will not be admitted to theme communities.

ROOMMATE REQUEST

If you would like to request a specific roommate, consider the following:

You may search for a roommate via our roommate finder. This service allows you to search for a roommate; if you find a potential roommate, and you mutually provide each other’s names on the application, we will do our best to assign you together. Roommates should make sure their room preferences closely align. Information submitted via the roommate finder is a tool for students to find a roommate and is not used by Michigan Housing to make housing placements.

When you sign your contract with Michigan Housing, you are agreeing to abide by the Community Living at Michigan (“CLAM”) standards and Terms & Conditions . Take a moment to read through the CLAM, and please read the Proper Use Agreement for technology.

Application available soon via email

How Housing & Food Works at OU!

The mission of OU Housing and Food Services is to bring life to the university community. We’re devoted to keeping students safe, secure and comfortable in their living environment, ensuring that they have a wide variety of dining options from which to choose and supporting the mission of the university to encourage students in their academic endeavors.

FIRST-YEAR HOUSING PROCESS

Yes! All freshman students must live in freshman-designated university housing for two semesters. First-year students who meet one of the eligible exceptions may apply for exemption on the housing portal  when the first-year housing application becomes available. Exemption applications are reviewed by the University Housing Review Committee (the “UHRC”).

In order to request exemption from the freshman housing policy, at least one of the eligible exceptions listed below must be met by the first day of the month when classes begin. The University President is authorized to develop additional procedures and requirements as necessary to implement the purpose of this policy.

  • Students who are 21 years old or older.
  • Students who are married or have children.
  • Students who have at least 24 hours of college credit from an accredited institution (concurrent, advanced placement or CLEP hours do not apply to this 24-hour requirement).
  • Students who lived in University residence halls for two semesters.
  • Students who lived in Cleveland or McClain counties during their senior year of high school and will continue living with their parent(s) or guardian(s) in these counties during their first year at the University of Oklahoma.
  • Students with a verifiable financial, medical, or exceptional need that cannot be otherwise adequately addressed as determined by the UHRC.

Freshman students who meet one of the eligible exceptions may apply for exemption on the housing portal for review by the University Housing Review Committee (the “UHRC”). Students may begin applying for exemption when the first-year housing application becomes available.

Questions regarding the Regents’ policy and residency requirements should be directed to Housing & Food Services, (405) 325-2511 or [email protected] .

All first-year students are guaranteed on-campus housing at the university.

First-year students can request a single room on the housing application. Single room assignments are based on availability and not all requests are guaranteed.

Students are strongly encouraged to submit their own housing application. If students have questions, they can contact the Housing office at (405) 325-2511.

Students can make changes to their housing application until May 1.

No, both students must be admitted to the university and have an active, complete housing application in order to request each other as a roommate. Students can make changes to their housing application and add a roommate until May 1.

All students will be asked to complete profile questions within the application. On the roommate request page, you will be able to browse for roommates based on specific profile questions. You will have suggested roommates you can choose from or you can choose to go potluck and Housing will use your profile answers to find your best match.

HOUSING ASSIGNMENTS

You will have until May 1 to complete your housing application and form your roommate pair. After you complete your housing application and submit your enrollment deposit, you will receive an assigned room selection access time to select your room. Housing room selection access times will be determined by your enrollment deposit date . Room selection access times will be sent to OU email addresses.

Specific move in details will be posted on the housing website once available. Additionally, students will be provided information regarding move-in and early arrival requests in their housing assignment letters.

No, parking is not included in on-campus housing rates. Vehicles must be registered with Parking and Transportation Services. Permits will be available for purchase beginning in July. Student permits are valid from August to June. For more information about permit rates, please visit  ou.edu/parking .

Safety is our top priority at the University of Oklahoma.

Building Entry

All residence halls are equipped with card access, which means your OU student ID will allow you to access your assigned floor and your assigned residence hall.

Your student ID will also give you access to the first-floor lobbies in other centers to use services such as computer labs and food services.

Fire Safety

Whenever the fire alarm sounds, you and all other occupants in the residence halls must evacuate the building and proceed to the designated alternate refuge area until you are notified that it is safe to return to your building or room. As you leave your room, close your door. Students who do not vacate the building during the sounding of the alarm will be subject to disciplinary action. Meet at the emergency evacuation safe location designated by your resident advisor.

Housing and Residence Life provides a complimentary service to accompany residential students anywhere on campus (north to south from Boyd St. to Lloyd Noble Center, west to east from Elm Ave. to S. Jenkins Ave.) from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., Sunday to Friday.

This service is staffed by trained resident advisors who are readily available to escort students on foot. To reach SafeWalk, call (405) 325-WALK (9255) or from the blue emergency phones. When using a blue phone, simply ask the OUPD dispatcher to connect you with SafeWalk.

The University of Oklahoma also offers a free taxi service in and around Norman, Oklahoma, for OU students on certain nights. SafeRide provides safe and free transportation to OU students within the Norman city limits, no questions asked. Each student may request free, on-demand taxi SafeRides each weekend of operation.  SafeRide operates every weekend from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday when OU is open and weather permitting.

Weather Safety

Since Oklahoma weather can be severe and difficult to predict, it is important that you know which county you are in so that you can interpret forecasts and warnings provided by the media and other sources. The University of Oklahoma Norman campus is located in Cleveland County. In the case of severe weather, watches and warnings will be announced over the intercom system in all centers. Students should be aware of their surroundings at all times by checking weather bulletins and listening for the City of Norman severe weather sirens.

For more information and maps of best available refuge areas, visit the OU Emergency Preparedness website .

If you require an accommodation for your housing assignment, please contact the Accessibility and Disability Resource Center to arrange a confidential discussion regarding your need. You can contact the ADRC at (405) 325-3852 or  [email protected] . The ADRC communicates approved accommodations to Housing & Residence Life, and only those accommodations approved by ADRC will be taken into consideration in the assignment process.

Room Assignments

Learn about the housing and roommate preference process before room selection begins in June for first-time incoming freshmen. If you are a returning resident, please see our returning residents page.

Housing Preferences

Explore our on-campus residence halls and our Living Learning Communities (LLCs) to determine your housing preferences. After you sign and return your housing contract and satisfy the $300 advance payment, you will be able to submit your housing preferences online . Here you can indicate:

  • Your five residence hall preferences
  • Your Living Learning Communities preferences
  • Your bathroom preferences (community vs. shared/private)
  • Your roommate preference

If you change your mind after you enter your preferences, you can always log back in and update them before room selection. Room selection timeslots are assigned in housing application date order, not in the order housing preferences were submitted. We will assign rooms to students who miss their room selection timeslot based on their preferences and roommate profile matches.

Once you receive a contract offer and pay your $300 advance payment, you have access to the Roommate Groups page in your housing portal. This page gives you the option to search for roommates by details (gender, age, college, major or UT EID), profile questions or profile percentage match (the housing portal gives a percentage match based on the answers to students’ profile questions).

If you would like to share your room with a specific person, you will need to indicate your roommate preference. Students can submit a roommate request, and once approved, they will be paired together. The student with the earlier room selection timeslot will select the room assignment for both students in the roommate pair based on available space.

If you already have a roommate or roommate group in mind, you have the option to “join a group” by searching for that group name or by UT EID to request a specific student.

Many students opt for a random roommate assignment (the “potluck” option). When going this route, you still participate in the room selection process and place yourself in a room with another student in it. When looking at the room, you will be able to see the profile information of the student already in the room to help with your selection.

If our office assigns your room, we will use your age, classification, major and profile percentage match to pair you with an appropriate student. Please note that supplemental contract holders are unable to request or accept roommate requests.

Room Selection FAQs

The room selection process begins in early June for first-time incoming freshmen. The room assignment process for Living Learning Communities begins June 1.

Applicants who apply early are more likely to be able to select a preferred housing assignment. Since the housing application opens on August 1, students who wait to apply may not receive their top housing preferences. This does not mean that applicants who apply late will not be able to live on campus. While housing is not guaranteed, we aim to offer housing contracts to as many incoming first-time freshmen as we can.

Students who do not participate in the room selection process will be manually assigned based on their preferences and roommate profile matches. These assigned rooms can be found on your housing application portal in early July. Please note that this does not pertain to the majority of students; it mostly applies to students who receive supplemental contracts or contracts later in the process.

Housing contract offers, notifications and confirmations are sent by email. Update your contact information (including your email address) whenever something changes so you receive communication from us.

Residence halls open for the fall semester in late August. Check the Academic Calendar for the residence hall opening and closing dates.

Housing Assignment Information

Housing assignment priority.

student and staff member

The Housing Assignment Office randomly offers housing to eligible applicants who apply by the stated deadline. Housing assignments are made according to the highest preference available (based on information the student provides on the housing application). Since current UCLA housing residents reserve their housing spaces in late April for the following academic year, some housing facilities and desired room types may not be available to new students. If the student's preferences are not available at the time the offer is made, the student will still receive a housing offer for a space that is available.  The majority of students live in triple rooms during their first two - three years on campus.

Roommate Matching

The Lifestyle Preferences Section on the Housing Application is extremely important as these preferences will be used during the roommate matching function in August. Students will be matched with the person(s) that best match the preferences lists. Students may update these preferences from the time their application is submitted until the housing offer is issued, by visiting the My Housing web site and clicking on the Application link.

Acceptance of Housing Offers

Once a housing offer is available online, there will be a deadline by which to accept the offer.  Once the offer has been accepted, the housing contract charge will be posted to the student's BruinBill account and there will be a subsequent deadline by which to make the initial payment. Payments must be made online by the deadline or the offer will be canceled and the space reoffered to another student.  Housing offers will be sent through email.  All students who are offered housing — including those students who are eligible to receive financial aid — are required to accept the offer by the stated deadline and then make the initial payment on BruinBill by the subsequent deadline.  If a new student is not able to make the full initial payment by the deadline, the student may discuss the possibility of a payment agreement with the Accounts Receivable office by emailing using  Ask Housing .

Department Allocation Students

All students, including department allocation students, who apply for university housing must submit a housing application with the appropriate fee and meet all subsequent deadlines to be eligible for a housing assignment.

Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities or other special housing needs can be accommodated in most, but not all, UCLA housing facilities. The Housing Assignment Office staff work closely with the Center for Accessible Education to coordinate the offer process. The UCLA Center for Accessible Education (CAE) is responsible for the administration of UCLA’s commitment to ensuring access and participation for all students with qualifying disabilities. The Housing Accommodations Board through the CAE is responsible for evaluating requests for a reasonable accommodation and/or modification in University-owned housing. Please proceed to review the CAE Housing website to submit a request for a disability-related accommodation and subsequent handbook which further explain the specific requirements and guidelines governing requests for reasonable accommodation in University housing. In evaluating the request, the Housing Accommodation Board will consult with UCLA Residential Life, the CAE, and other need-to-know individuals, as necessary, to determine whether the requested accommodation is necessary and reasonable.

Please note that a reasonable accommodation is incumbent on various factors, including, but not limited to: timing of the request being made by the student, inventory that would satisfy all, or part of, the accommodation, and students eligibility to a housing guarantee.

Current Address, Email & Phone Number

Housing Services' primary method of communication is email, so it is crucial that students keep their contact information up to date.  Updates to address, email, and phone number are made online at the  My Housing  web site.
