This study compares the links between nature and health and well-being experienced by individuals living in different contexts in three cities in the metropolitan area of Asunción, Paraguay. It found that, for people living in informal settlements, proximate nature can have negative impacts on life satisfaction. However, a strong connection to nature may lead to better mental health and higher life satisfaction, as experienced by people living in formal settlements and the evidence from the Global North.

This section of the site introduces you to our main research interests and areas of activity.

Development Studies: A student perspective

In response to the growing Black Lives Matter movement across the world, many of us are reflecting upon race and the role each of us play in facilitating and maintaining systemic inequality. Now more than ever, it is essential that we both re-evaluate what we know to be normal and deconstruct systems and institutions that were designed to subdue and suppress. In international development, where failings are painfully apparent, crucial reforms still need to take place before the sector truly reflects its own discourse and teachings – and universities are the perfect environment for such necessary changes to unfold.

When starting my degree, I naively regarded development, as many do, as faultlessly ethical and well-intentioned. Simultaneously burdensome and enlightening, I soon became aware that this was both an inaccurate and dangerous assumption. This realisation came admittedly late in the second year of my degree during an optional module on NGOs, taken by only a handful of students on the course. Learning for the first time that the Third Sector and aid were actually born from colonialism as a means of control, it was plain to see that development has not truly developed in and of itself.

With local and national actors receiving just 3.1% of humanitarian funding globally, international actors from the Global North continue to dominate development discourse and decision-making by holding disproportionate financial power. As a great proportion of funding remains tied or earmarked, the current aid structure frequently sidelines the needs of those being helped in favour of the needs of donors. This neocolonial system allows donors, organisations, and countries to further their own agendas abroad – an attribute sadly reflected in the UK’s upcoming DFID–FCO merger.

With these inescapable ties to colonialism and Northern dominance throughout the sector, it is hardly surprising that Development Studies is also afflicted by bias. Despite my course recognising these issues, teaching frequently seems to reproduce the conventions that we are concurrently taught to contest. With most lecturers and tutors originating from the Global North, we are often taught development from the perspective of outside researchers, as opposed to practitioners or activists who possess specific contextual knowledge and experience. Academic discourse therefore often continues to be dictated and propagated by outside Northern voices and financing, a standard that universities are well placed to change.

With researchers as our primary educators, there is a decided focus on exploring global issues, with significantly less focus on actively designing solutions. Solutions, after all, are highly contextual and cannot simply be determined via lectures and research papers. It is this fact that makes me question the existing structure and nature of the UK’s development courses. It is as though we spend three years at university to understand the ways in which the world needs fixing, without being rewarded the skills, connections, and experiences required to effectively do so. With such a research-centred and impractical approach to learning, development undergraduates are leaving university ill-equipped to take the action that they passionately want to take.

Further to this, the pool of International Development students is largely inconsistent with the subject, with most of my coursemates coming from wealthy families, predominantly from the Global North. Although it is undoubtedly with good intentions that students want to use their privilege to help others, there is a sense that many are extremely out of touch with the realities of many people in the UK, let alone in developing countries. Coming from a relatively privileged background myself, I am conscious that no matter how much I educate myself and immerse myself in development, I will never truly be able to fully understand the issues at hand. Combined with a relative lack of Southern academics at UK universities, there is a sense that development courses are a place for the privileged to discuss and determine responses to other people’s problems, with little consultation with those who are actually affected. With overseas students paying double for tuition fees and masters courses costing them up to £30,000 at some institutions, accessibility to UK courses remains ironically limited for those who are directly affected by development, systemically excluding those for which the course holds the most relevance.

These issues are exacerbated by our real-life encounters with development. Many spend gap years and holidays participating in archetypal voluntourism – constructing parks, teaching English, or just generally providing advice and services that teenagers are not realistically qualified to give. These projects, often costing thousands of pounds, frequently benefit the volunteers more than they benefit those being helped – a microcosm of the wider development sector. These trips continue to be encouraged as a means of giving students good anecdotes to get into university or employment, once again excluding poorer students who are unable to afford such experiences. These somewhat superficial experiences, although well-intentioned, do little to actually help and instead do a lot to sustain Northern dominance and the white saviour complex.

Universities are in a position to change this. The only fieldwork opportunity on my course at the University of Bath consists of an optional two-week research trip in our final year for which students must pay several thousand pounds. Not only does this adopt the passive research-only approach to development that most courses take, it is another example of well-off students traveling to developing countries to gain experience for themselves, without contributing much, or anything, back. This trip is again unaffordable for some students, providing only the privileged with opportunity.

Reflecting on these issues, there are a number of ways that International Development courses could adapt to better reflect their own preachings:

Increase accessibility to students from the Global South – provide more development-specific scholarships and transfer programmes.
Recruit more staff and practitioners from the Global South – teach future practitioners with current practitioners and invest in their projects and research.
Improve connections with universities and academics from the Global South – provide collaborative and empowering opportunities to shape development discourse.
Expand collaborations with other departments – create a multidisciplinary space for students on other courses to work with development students to create change.
Provide opportunities for students to collaborate with meaningful projects abroad and learn from those making change within destination countries.
Make fieldwork and experience compulsory and include costs in existing course fees – give all students the opportunity to improve their knowledge, skills, and awareness in projects led by Southern partners.
Provide compulsory training on how to actively work against inequalities in development work.
Transform workshops and seminars into ways to more actively engage in innovation and problem-solving – give students the skills to take action.

Students all too often shift their focus away from development once completing their course, finding that they are inadequately equipped for careers in development, and that routes such as finance or consultancy provide a more appealing path. This in itself is an unacceptable waste of good-will and talent, but the concept of development studies is wasted in more ways than just this. Through increasing accessibility for students across different backgrounds and disciplines, while also reimagining teaching and creating meaningful experiences, Development Studies could finally become what it always should have been – a productive and legitimate route into development.

This study is basically on the failures of other strategies at the National, State and Local Government level to ensure sustainable development using community development as a strategy. Most of the projects and programmes set by government for development are not sustainable because the beneficiaries are not actively involved (participation). The objectives of the study include: to determine the relevance of Community development projects and their effects on Sustainable development; and the effect of community participation on Sustainable development in Nigeria. The propositions for the research work are: community development projects and programmes are not of great relevance to sustainable development ; and community participation on projects and programmes to a greater extent do not lead to sustainable development in Chikun Local Government. The study uses the survey research method which include the use of instruments of interviews, questionnaire administration and using checklist of issues for observation as primary sources, while the secondary sources comprises files, reports, minute books, budgets etc. on activities, decisions, financial reports, pictures of community development projects and programmes of the Local Government and Community Development Associations. Data collected were presented and analyzedusing tables and simple percentages. The study found that most government plans and implementation of Community development projects and programmes did not properly involve the beneficiaries, from its initial stage to completion. We also found that there is problem of misplacement of priority by the government, as to the pressing need of the people at a time is not what the government is providing them with. The Local Government projects and programmes are not sustained or maintained because the supposed beneficiaries do not see it as their own since they lack any sense of ownership during initiation and even implementation of the projects and programmes. To this end, this study recommend that people`s participation philosophy of mobilizing resources and organizing the community people both the rural populace to the urban centers to have cogent interests in providing for their wellbeing, need to be properly emphasized and utilized. This will stimulate the feeling of ownership of such development projects/programmes by benefiting communities and by implication promote sustainable development. Government at various strata including the federal, state and most especially local governments, have to come to terms with the fact that there is an inherent importance in “the participatory development theory” which advocates community populace active participation in decision-making and implementation of policies that affect and mould their lives. This will ensure that projects/programmes of government are exactly the felt needs of benefiting communities

(2).effect of socio-economic infrastructure on rural development in nigeria.

Rural develop ment which is a component within the broader national development has remained a problem for both developed and developing countries. In order to achieve the desired rural development in the developing countries, there are proliferations of rural development strategies over the years, Nigeria inclusive. The objective of the study was to examine the effect of socio-economic infrastructure on rural development in Katsina State, Nigeria. The study chose three local governments as the geographical scope, while schools, electricity, market road healthcare infrastructures were the subject scope. The research population was 510,683, out of which 550 were taken as the sample size of the study using Saunders (2007) sampling method. A total of 520 questionnaires were returned both from the rural populace and staff respondents, and data was collected mainly through primary sources, while qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis were employed. Regression analysis and correlation were used in testing the hypotheses postulated to establish the relationships between socio-economic infrastructure and rural development. Findings of the study indicated that, there is positive and significant relationship between provision of socio-economic infrastructure and rural development as all the five null hypotheses were rejected. The study recommends that, government should provide more socio-economic infrastructure in order to develop the rural areas.

(3) ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF YOUTH COMMERCIAL AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME ON UNEMPLOYMENT REDUCTION IN EKITI STATE (2011-2015)

High rate of unemployment is a bedeviling issue that seem to be taking the frontline in every public discuss on socioeconomic problems in Ekiti State; The reported unabated upsurge of unemployment in Ekiti State despite the measures put in place in the various aspects of agriculture through the Youth Commercial Agricultural Development (YCAD) programme to stop the trend is mind boggling and contrary to expectation. This necessitated the study entitled “assessment of the impact of Youth Commercial Agricultural Development programme on unemplotment reduction in Ekiti state (2011-2015)” which was anchored on three objectives which include to ascertain the extent to which the YCAD empowerment(training) programme has reduced unemployment in Ekiti state, examine ways through which public private partnership on the agricultural programme has helped to reduce unemployment and the extent to which the provision of agricultural incentives has attracted the unemployed people to agricultural businesses. The design of the study is basically survey method but complimented with statistical documents. To this end, the instruments used for the collection of primary data include questionaire and interview while relevant documents that contain secondary data such as beneficiaries record books were used to support it. The primary data were presented in tables of frequencies and percentages while the Pearson product moment correlation was used to test the hypotheses. Among other things, the study revealed that beyond the recorded beneficiaries the programme had an indirect impact on non-beneficiaries who did not participate in the empowerment programme. However, only the recorded beneficiaries or participants had access to agricultural incentives made available at the period due to poor funding of the agricultural sector during the implementation of the YCAD programme which was as low as 2.4% in 2013 and this limited the effect of the programme on unemployment reduction in the aspect of attracting the unemployed to agricultural businesses. The set of journals have been ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups, four quartiles. Q1 (green) comprises the quarter of the journals with the highest values, Q2 (yellow) the second highest values, Q3 (orange) the third highest values and Q4 (red) the lowest values.

The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is.

Evolution of the number of published documents. All types of documents are considered, including citable and non citable documents.

This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. The two years line is equivalent to journal impact factor ™ (Thomson Reuters) metric.

Evolution of the total number of citations and journal's self-citations received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. Journal Self-citation is defined as the number of citation from a journal citing article to articles published by the same journal.

Evolution of the number of total citation per document and external citation per document (i.e. journal self-citations removed) received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. External citations are calculated by subtracting the number of self-citations from the total number of citations received by the journal’s documents.

What are the under-researched topics in development according to young faculty?

Berk (who is on vacation this week) and I have recently been surveying assistant professors, graduate students, and World Bank economists to learn how they find out about new research and the role of blogs in this process. We’ll be sharing results once we have finished this, but to start with, I thought I’d share this chart below on what junior faculty who work on development think are the under-researched topics.

These responses come from approximately 50 assistant professors in the U.S. and at international universities who do development research. They were identified through a range of criteria, including presenting at the NEUDC development conference last year, and/or being a faculty member at a top university who publishes in development. One of the first people to answer the survey suggested that we attempt to take the “pulse” of the profession by getting their views on what topics they think are under-researched or that they would be particularly interested in seeing more research in. Here are the responses:

These responses fit my priors reasonably well (or maybe I’m just being self-serving given that I’m working on topics like SMEs, migration and management). But if you were to look at a standard graduate development economics course syllabus, it is typically heavy on health, education, risk and insurance, and household bargaining models, and very light on coverage of some of the topics identified as under-researched here. I think this ranking also fits reasonably well with where the existing evidence from impact evaluations has been (and thus the topic coverage in books like More than Good Intentions and Poor Economics ).

At our Office of Research ( research@BSPH), we translate that knowledge to develop, evaluate, and disseminate treatment and prevention strategies and inform public health practice. Research along this entire spectrum represents a fundamental mission of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

From laboratories at Baltimore’s Wolfe Street building, to Bangladesh maternity wards in densely packed neighborhoods, to field studies in rural Botswana, Bloomberg School faculty lead research that directly addresses the most critical public health issues worldwide. Research spans from molecules to societies and relies on methodologies as diverse as bench science and epidemiology. That research is translated into impact, from discovering ways to eliminate malaria, increase healthy behavior, reduce the toll of chronic disease, improve the health of mothers and infants, or change the biology of aging.

New research traces the spread of HIV in and from Indonesia

The HIV variant dominant in Indonesia was introduced from Thailand over multiple events. A Kobe University study traces where it came from and how it spread from there, offering possible insights into the development of treatments against the disease.

The study appears in Scientific Reports .

HIV is the virus causing AIDS, but one of the things that makes it so difficult to treat is that there are many variants of it. Kobe University virologist Kameoka Masanori says, "The diversity is increasing every day and the prevalent virus strains differ from region to region around the world."

Knowing which variants of the virus are prevalent in a given region and how it spreads from one to another is relevant not only to better trace the epidemic, but also to ensure that treatments are deployed against those variants that are most likely to occur in any given region.

In Indonesia, the fourth-most populous country on Earth, only a third of the affected have access to anti-HIV drugs, and little is known about the circulating strains.

"Indonesia is recognized as one of the countries where the HIV/AIDS pandemic is still expanding. Kobe University has established a joint research center for infectious diseases at the Institute of Tropical Diseases at the Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia, and so we decided to decode the viral genome from blood samples of individuals infected with HIV-1 (out of the two main HIV types, the one causing the vast majority of AIDS cases worldwide) around the country to clarify the viral transmission trends," explains Kameoka.

The researchers' findings show that all of the analyzed viruses belonged to a strain called CRF01_AE, first identified in Thailand. But their detailed analysis shows that from there, the virus was brought to Indonesia at least three different times, sometimes via different countries such as Vietnam and Laos. And while it was Thai substrains that spread to most of Southeast Asia and also to other parts of the world, it was an Indonesian substrain that moved on to Iran.

In the paper, the researchers write, "As a country with a high incidence of HIV-1 infection in Southeast Asia, Indonesia may contribute to the spread of HIV to other Asian countries."

With their data, the Kobe University research team could trace the timeline of the spread of the CRF01_AE strain. Having originally emerged in Africa, it probably was brought to Thailand around 1977, from where it started to spread through Southeast Asia.

It probably first entered Indonesia around 1980, then again via Laos around 1983 and via Vietnam around 1985. Only then, in 1985, it was recorded for the first time, in Thailand. According to the WHO, it has been the dominant strain of HIV in Southeast Asia since 1990, and has become the dominant strain in East Asia, including China and Japan, in the last decade.

Kameoka says, "I personally believe that it is important to constantly monitor and accumulate information on viral genome genetic information in endemic areas, as viruses causing infectious diseases can change their properties due to genetic variation. Such information could also be useful for control and countermeasures against infectious diseases by estimating epidemic routes and transmission trends."

How night shift work can raise risk of diabetes, obesity

Just a few days on a night shift schedule throws off protein rhythms related to blood glucose regulation, energy metabolism and inflammation, processes that can influence the development of chronic metabolic conditions.

The finding, from a study led by scientists at Washington State University and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, provides new clues as to why night shift workers are more prone to diabetes, obesity and other metabolic disorders.

"There are processes tied to the master biological clock in our brain that are saying that day is day and night is night and other processes that follow rhythms set elsewhere in the body that say night is day and day is night," said senior study author Hans Van Dongen, a professor in the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. "When internal rhythms are dysregulated, you have this enduring stress in your system that we believe has long-term health consequences."

Though more research is needed, Van Dongen said the study shows that these disrupted rhythms can be seen in as little as three days, which suggests early intervention to prevent diabetes and obesity is possible. Such intervention could also help lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, which is elevated in night shift workers as well.

Published in the Journal of Proteome Research , the study involved a controlled laboratory experiment with volunteers who were put on simulated night or day shift schedules for three days. Following their last shift, participants were kept awake for 24 hours under constant conditions -- lighting, temperature, posture and food intake -- to measure their internal biological rhythms without interference from outside influences.

Blood samples drawn at regular intervals throughout the 24-hour period were analyzed to identify proteins present in blood-based immune system cells. Some proteins had rhythms closely tied to the master biological clock, which keeps the body on a 24-hour rhythm. The master clock is resilient to altered shift schedules, so these protein rhythms didn't change much in response to the night shift schedule.

However, most other proteins had rhythms that changed substantially in night shift participants compared to the day shift participants.

Looking more closely at proteins involved in glucose regulation, the researchers observed a nearly complete reversal of glucose rhythms in night shift participants. They also found that processes involved in insulin production and sensitivity, which normally work together to keep glucose levels within a healthy range, were no longer synchronized in night shift participants. The researchers said this effect could be caused by the regulation of insulin trying to undo the glucose changes triggered by the night shift schedule. They said this may be a healthy response in the moment, as altered glucose levels may damage cells and organs, but could be problematic in the long run.

"What we showed is that we can really see a difference in molecular patterns between volunteers with normal schedules and those with schedules that are misaligned with their biological clock," said Jason McDermott, a computational scientist with PNNL's Biological Sciences Division. "The effects of this misalignment had not yet been characterized at this molecular level and in this controlled manner before."

The researchers' next step will be to study real-world workers to determine whether night shifts cause similar protein changes in long-term shift workers.
