Millions of people are lining up to work for Tesla .

The electric carmaker said it received more than 3.6 million applications in 2022. But engineers at Tesla say it's no small feat to land a role at Elon Musk's most well-known company.

Tesla's hiring process for engineers can require as many as 9 interviews, a series of tests, and in some cases, a letter to Musk himself.

Business Insider spoke with 10 current Tesla engineers about what it takes to work at the company. The employees spoke under the condition of anonymity to protect their employment, but their identities and roles at Tesla have been verified by BI.

Several engineers said it took multiple attempts to land a role at the company, and the process could be laborious. Typically, applicants must start from the beginning of the process when applying for a new role externally.

From start to finish, it can take up to six months to receive an offer letter.

The first step in the application process is pretty standard

Tesla typically responds to a successful application by setting up an interview with a recruiter or a human-resources employee.

Tesla engineers said they secured an initial interview by either sending their résumé into an application on Tesla's careers page, chatting with a Tesla representative at a networking event, or having a colleague pass along their résumé through the company's internal recommendation system.

"Sometimes it really is who you know at Tesla," one engineer who has worked at the company for six years said. "It helps to go to a feeder college where a classmate can help recommend you for a role."

Recruiters often sift through thousands of applications, giving interviews to a maximum of only 20 or so applicants , according to four engineers who've been involved in the hiring process. Only about half of those candidates would make it to the next step, they said.

After the initial culture-fit interview — which includes traditional questions about why people want to work at Tesla and how they jibe with others — candidates who progress typically chat separately with a manager and at least one engineer from their prospective team. These interviews are more technical and sometimes include a take-home or live test.

"Tesla takes a no-bullshit approach," one engineer told BI. "At other companies, you can sometimes get away with saying something to sound impressive. You can't do that at Tesla. If you don't know something, own up to it because they will always ask the follow-up questions."

Panel interviews can last up to six hours

The next step in Tesla's hiring process includes a presentation and a series of rapid-fire interviews that can take anywhere from four to six hours.

Applicants are typically told to present on a previous project for 15 to 30 minutes, followed by a Q&A session on the project. Tesla workers said it was best for early-career applicants to present on college group projects or personal ventures.

Four to six engineers sit in on the presentation and later break off to interview the candidate on their own for about 30 minutes each.

"We try to leave it pretty open-ended because it's a good way to find red flags," an engineer who has been involved in the recruiting process said regarding the presentation prompt. "We tell them not to present something confidential, and that's the biggest red flag if they present something like that. It's an easy no if we know they won't be trustworthy."

Some Tesla engineers said they spent more than 40 hours preparing for the presentation over the course of several weeks. The panel can take place over Zoom or in person. It also includes a short break in the middle of the session to give panelists time to take lunch.

"You need to make sure you know the technical details of your project inside and out," one engineer said. "It doesn't have to be the most complicated tech so long as you can talk about what you've done in great detail. You need to be able to tell them why you approached it the way you did and address other ways of accomplishing it as well."

One engineer with knowledge of the process said that after the panel, the employees would meet to give a "blind vote" on the candidate, meaning the panelists all submit their scores at once. Candidates are scored on a scale of one to four. The engineer said that if a single panel member were to give the candidate a score of one and could back up their opinion, the individual's application would usually be rejected, while a score of a three or a four would be viewed as a sign of approval for the prospective hire.

Two engineers said only about half the applicants who made it to the panel stage would be selected.

Sit tight — it could take six months to land the job

Depending on the role, some applicants are offered the job after a successful panel interview. For higher-level positions, the candidates can go on to interview with director or VP-level employees.

Three workers said some applicants were required to fill out a form that would be sent to a VP or director-level worker outlining three reasons they would be a good fit for Tesla. Some of the notes would even be passed onto Musk, the engineers said. Last year, the Tesla CEO said in an email to staff that he must approve all new hires .

From start to finish, the entire process could take anywhere from one to six months, the engineers said. Seven engineers said Tesla had the most intensive application process they'd seen in the industry.

"Half the time, we miss out because we're too slow," an engineer with knowledge of the hiring process said. "We know it, but it's set up in some ways to find the people who are so gung-ho they're willing to wait. They're people who'd probably get a higher base pay at a different company, but they have the opportunity to cash in on Tesla stock too."

A Tesla spokesperson didn't respond to a request for comment.

What Is The Tesla Hiring Process?

You’ve had a look through the Tesla open jobs and you’ve found one that sounds perfect for you - great! So how do you get started? Firstly, to set your expectations, the full process can take anywhere from two weeks to three months, depending on the availability of the people who need to interview you. The more senior you are, the more time it is likely to take.

1. Apply through the website

Former Tesla recruiter Marissa Peretz said in a Business Insider interview that CEO Elon Musk was, “really obsessed with hiring world class talent”. The application process at Tesla is not totally standardized, so can vary from one role to the next according to what they think matches the role.

Apply for the role you want through Tesla’s website, but not before you update your resumé and one of the following: LinkedIn profile, Indeed online resumé, or online portfolio. You will be asked for a link to one of these in your online application so assume it will be checked.

You may be asked for a relatively brief account of your ‘evidence of excellence’. Tesla wants problem solvers with a track record. Show that you fit the bill.

It’s worth applying to Tesla, even though there’s so much competition, but it’s not worth applying poorly. You will almost definitely be rejected. Rewrite your resume to focus very specifically on the job spec and follow Elon Musk’s advice : "When sending your resume, please describe a few of the hardest problems you solved & exactly how you solved them.”

Remove any unnecessary details or irrelevant work history, but include contract work if it’s relevant. Recruiters are busy people! If you can make their job easier by providing a clear and concise resume, you’ll have a better chance of getting to the next round.

2. Initial phone interview

After you’ve submitted your completed application, a real person will review and evaluate it. If the recruiter likes the sound of you, you will be included in the first round of screening interviews. Generally there are between 5 and 15 people in this stage for each role.

In this initial interview, the interviewer will be looking for more background information about you, your job history, and some of your biggest accomplishments. They will be looking to gauge your technical skills, general fit for the role, and get a rough idea of your desired career trajectory.

To show you have properly researched the job and company, it’s a good idea to have a couple of questions about both up your sleeve, so you’re ready for the “do you have any questions?” line. The best types of questions to ask are ones that come from having done research. Don’t ask questions that you should be able to find the answer to for yourself..

These days many interviews are conducted over Zoom which can feel intimidating, but as long as you have done your research and prepared as best you can, at this point you’ll have to just lean in and trust the process!

3. Online assessment

Once you get past the initial phone interview, you will have a tech test to complete. It will take anything from 30 minutes to 2-3 days, depending on your level of seniority. Focus on your code quality and use annotations to show your thinking if it’s not obvious. That way you can still be assessed positively if you don’t get as far as you hoped.

4. In-depth interview with hiring manager

If you pass your initial screening interview, next will be a more in-depth interview with a hiring manager, to talk in detail about technical competency but also cultural fit. The hiring manager will want to talk about your current circumstances, including anything that might affect your hire including relocation.

This will be a more technical interview. As a software worker, be ready to talk about algorithms, data structures and system design. However, your job spec may give you some insight into what the interview will cover.

5. In-person interview

In the final stage of the interview process, you will be invited to an in-person onsite interview. You will be asked to prepare a 30 minute presentation, in which you will need to discuss a difficult problem you’ve solved.

Make sure to focus on the details of the problem. Include:

  • How you modeled the problem.
  • Why you conceived of the problem that way rather than a plausible alternative.
  • What steps you took to resolve the problem.
  • Why you preferred the path you chose over plausible alternative paths to solving the problem.
  • What the outcome was.

Often people find that the STAR method is a great fit for this sort of question, which stands for:

This is where you explain a situation that you faced in the past. Try to think of an example that is technical, and just based around a difficult task or decision, rather than interpersonal issues (do show how you collaborated to solve the problem though in the action stage).

Discuss in detail the tasks that you were a part of or responsible for. What did they involve? What was required of you? What responsibilities did you have?

Explain what actions you took regarding the situation. The specific actions themselves are important, but it’s also really important to discuss your thought process, and what assumptions or decisions were guiding your choices.

What were the results of your actions? How were these measured? Were they what you expected or were they unexpected? What did the results mean for you or for your workplace and colleagues?

By using the STAR structure, you can make your presentation clear, concise and professional. People often love using the STAR structure because if you feel prepared and organized then you are much more likely to feel calm and confident walking into the interview.

6. Interview with Elon Musk

Elon Musk

While no longer the case, In the past, Elon Musk would interview every new hire before they were approved. He often would use riddles to examine the interviewee’s thought process.

The most famous of these was: “You’re standing on the surface of the Earth. You walk one mile south, one mile west and one mile north. You end up exactly where you started. Where are you?”

The answer is the North Pole. He would then follow up with, “Where else could you be?” This is more tricky but the answer is ‘near the South Pole’ (you need to start one mile north of a circle that is one mile in circumference and has the South Pole inside it. When you walk west, you walk one mile around the circle and then walk north again).

While Musk does not necessarily interview candidates anymore, or at least not as much, be prepared for this style of questioning as part of the interview process.

In total, you can expect to spend a number of weeks going through the interview process with Tesla.

Tesla’s hiring process is not easy. However, preparing for it thoroughly and giving it your best shot will be a great experience and will set you up to be more successful in future applications. And you never know. You might land your dream job.

Thanks to several anonymous anecdotes and first-hand accounts from former employees, it’s no secret that working at Tesla is extremely demanding. Much like Apple, Tesla is laser-focused on “changing the world,” and as a direct result, the company expects that employees will work exceedingly hard and tackle impossibly challenging problems for far more than 40+ hours a week.

  • How passionate you are about the company and their mission. Do you have a compelling reason to work there?
  • Can you handle the stress and hit the ground running? It’s tough working here and no one will hold you hand.

In addition to a phone screen with a recruiter and a phone interview with senior engineers, Wong adds that he also was tasked with creating a presentation highlighting some of his past work in front of Tesla engineers and other higher-ups.

Another response on the thread, this one from an anonymous employee, also relays that Tesla is looking for passion.

Process was very quick. Started with a phone call Tues, another call Friday and then was invited out to meet the team the following week… Above all, they look for passion about tesla. There are plenty of qualified people for each position. Also if Elon and JB would have their way, everyone would be an engineer at Tesla, regardless of if you’re actually in engineering, or if you’re in finance, hr etc. It’s a meritocracy, so don’t be afraid to (slightly) overstep your boundaries once in a while. You’ll eventually be rewarded for it.

One individual who interviewed for an engineering also relayed that a “recurring” theme to his interview was an effort to “Not a specific question but more like a recurring was to ensure the interviewer that I had genuine interest in and passion for working at Tesla and that I would be comfortable with the long hours of work frequently faced while working there.  “

The Tesla Financial Analyst Interview Guide

Walk through the Tesla financial analyst interview process and learn how I landed a job with Tesla’s FP&A Business Operations team.

Introduction

In this article, Michael (former FP&A and Business Operations Analyst at Tesla), will walk you through the steps he took to land a full-time analyst role at Tesla. This guide will cover the various stages of the interview process alongside general notes, tips, and sample interview questions and answers.

#1 Passing the Resume Screen

Tesla received 3 million job applications in all of 2021. This may sound a bit daunting, but there are several different things that you can do to squeeze past this first obstacle.

Clean Up Your Resume

First, you need to clean up your resume and tailor all of your experiences to best fit the financial analyst role or whichever role you are applying for.

Tesla is an innovative, technology-driven company that likes seeing people use data to make logical business decisions. Keep this in mind when tuning up the bullets in your resume.

When writing the experience section of your resume, you should make sure to start each bullet with an action verb. This will help cut down the excess “fluff” in your resume and make it easier for recruiters to understand your previous tasks and experiences.

Sample Action Verbs:

In addition to using action verbs, you should quantify your resume as much as possible so that you clearly state how you added value to your previous companies. For example, you can change “Reduced product line wait time” to “Reduced product line wait time by 3 seconds resulting in a 15% increase in production efficiency.”

Try to Obtain an Employee Referral

With thousands of applications flowing into Tesla each day, an employee referral would certainly help bring your resume to the top of the stack.

Now if you don’t have any existing friends or connections that work at Tesla, you can try to use LinkedIn and cold emails to contact an existing employee to ask for a quick phone call.

When scrolling through your LinkedIn network, try to look for your school alumni and ideally people who work on the finance team or the team that you are applying to. The goal is to hop on a phone call with your connection so that you can learn more about the working roles at Tesla and demonstrate a genuine interest in the company.

#2 Phone Screen

If you make it past the resume screen, then congratulations, you’ve made it past the largest cutting stage of the application process.

Following the resume screen, you’ll likely have to hop on a call with one recruiter and one or two finance managers. These calls are quite straightforward and very behavioral-focused. Although they seem quite simple, it will be important to give off a good impression and to make your interviewers believe that you will be a good fit on one of their teams.

Preparation Tip: Read Up on Tesla News

  • Spend an hour reading online articles on Tesla. Finance-oriented publications like CNBC , The Financial Times , and Bloomberg are great places to start.
  • Watch YouTube videos on recent company stories. Tesla has its own channel and Rob Maurer also runs a very informative YouTube channel called the Tesla Daily .
  • Read Tesla’s 10-K annual report. Every public company is required to post a publicly available 10-K company report . I’d recommend taking a look at the section on “Risk Factors” and “Management Opportunities, Challenges, and Risks.” (These sections are perfect for coming up with interesting follow-up questions that you can ask your interviewer).

Sample Questions & Answers

The following should give you an idea of the types of questions that you may be asked in these phone screen interviews.

Q: Why do you want to work for Tesla?

Sample Answer:

“Tesla seems to be a very dynamic and innovative company. With this in mind, I figured that this type of work exposure, particularly at the junior level, would be extremely rewarding as I would be forced to learn many things in a rapid environment. Although this may seem daunting for some, I’ve always been the type to throw myself into challenging situations to force myself to figure things out. Tesla has made tremendous progress since its first factory opening in Fremont, California and I’d simply love to take part in its massive global mission.”

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

“It’s hard to answer that question specifically as 5 years is quite a long time. What I can say is that I would like to spend the first few years of my analyst career learning the little details and all the ins and outs of the business. Then, after building up my fundamentals and overall experience, I would like to transition into a role that would allow me to make thoughtful and impactful business decisions.”

Q: What do you like to do outside of work and school?

“I really enjoy going fishing when I have some free time over the weekend. Although it seems like fishing is a relatively relaxed activity, I actually really enjoy the strategic side of a fishing operation. Whether it's looking a weather and wave height reports or researching specific species and testing different baits and fishing equipment, I actually really enjoy the process of testing out different theories to find what works best for me.”

#3 Excel Case Study Interview

If you make it past the phone screen stage, you’ll likely move on to an Excel case study interview. To prepare for this Excel case study test, I recommend you make sure you are comfortable with basic Excel skills and finance fundamentals.

Excel: In my case study, I ended up using simple formulas like SUMIFS and VLOOKUPS and I didn’t have to use pivot tables or macros. That said it certainly wouldn’t hurt to learn pivot tables and other Excel functions as they’ll likely switch up the case studies every now and then.

Finance: The Excel case study (at least when interviewing for the financial analyst role) is very much finance oriented. At a minimum, make sure you understand the ins and outs of an income statement so that you can comfortably solve for gross and net profit margins, EBITDA, etc.

General Tip: They will likely ask you for your insights or recommendations given the figures and data available. If certain figures or assumptions seem a bit high, perhaps you could recommend the analyst to speak with the manufacturing team or distribution team for more details on mandatory vs optional expenses (this makes it seem like you are familiar with real work scenarios).

#4 Final Round: 4-5 Back-to-Back 30-Minute Interviews

If you make it past the Excel case study test, you’ll likely have an opportunity to take part in a final round interview consisting of 4-5 back-to-back 30-minute interviews with members from various finance teams.

These interviews will consist of mostly technical and brain teaser questions. With this in mind, you should expect to open up Excel during the interview to share your screen and walk through mini case studies and teaser problems.

General Tip: Once you find a reasonable solution, don’t just stop at the numerical answer. The interviewer wants to see how you can connect the data to actionable business ideas. You’ll usually want to make some surface-level assumptions to arrive at a figure, then tell your interviewer the types of follow-up questions you would ask if you had more time to work on this in a real business setting.

You should also expect a couple of behavioral questions at the end of the interview alongside an opportunity to ask the interviewer general questions.

The following should give you an idea of the types of problem-solving questions that you might be asked in the final round of interviews.

Q: Tell me 3 different methods that you could use to price a Tesla car entering a new market?

  • You can use a competitive pricing model. Simply put, you can look up the prices of competing cars in the new market and price the Tesla car within a certain range of its competitors (maybe plus or minus 5%). It will also be interesting to factor in any potential tax benefits that some countries give to electric vehicle consumers as that could give Teslas a big pricing edge over traditional combustion engine vehicles.
  • You can use a cost-based pricing model. In this method, you can add up all the costs required to manufacture and distribute a vehicle. Then you can apply a percentage premium to that cost basis to arrive at the consumer-facing price. Perhaps you could use some industry-standard or comparable markup figure to determine the percentage premium to use.
  • You could create a model based on customer income. In this method, you could start by looking at all of the existing markets, and create a ratio using the Tesla prices in those markets relative to the median family income in that area. Once you have that ratio, you can apply it to your new market by finding the median family income in the new area.

Q: Identify the bottleneck of the car manufacturing line given XYZ data

This question will likely require you to use simple math to figure out which stage in the production line is taking up the most time. Once you figure out the bottleneck, the interviewer might ask you a follow-up question modifying the figures of the original scenario.

For example, your interviewer might say: “If you were presented with the opportunity to invest $X amount of dollars to cut down the bottleneck time by 25%, would you proceed with the project?”

To approach this problem, you would likely have to calculate how much more product you would be able to produce and the dollar value of that additional product. From there, you could calculate the payback period or essentially how long it would take for the additional profits to cover the cost of the initial investment.

#5 Job Offer!

If you make it past the final round of interviews, congratulations, you’ll likely receive an email and a call from the HR team.

If you don’t get the job offer, don’t worry and keep your chin up. It’s already quite an accomplishment to make it to the final round of interviewers. Even if you don’t end up at Tesla, you can still apply to many other great companies like Apple, Amazon, Visa, and more.

It went good and answered their questions properly. What is the score weight of those members on the final decision? Do they provide Yes or No feedback to hiring manager or submit their thoughts? I am not sure what process in Microsoft is and not sure about software role or not but 5 or even more interviews is very common in most places. Google, Apple, Facebook etc. You want to be sure before hiring, if in doubt don't hire. So would you rather remove the doubts or hire and make a mistake?

Lol after panel there’s a round table 24 hours after the panel w all the interviewers. They assign scores 1-4 (1 strong no hire 4 strong hire) The hiring manager usually has the final say once they have the feedback from the team. Once a decision is made your recruiter talks to hiring manager about comp and then reaches out to you. Most cases there is an answer pretty quickly unless the teams on the fence. If the team is in the fence it could be delayed for some time. Feel free to dm me
