PhD in Project Planning and Management

Rationale for the programme:

The Doctoral Studies Programme aims to provide an opportunity to candidates with outstanding academic background to engage in advanced research studies in the field of project planning and management. Candidates are expected to have intellectual curiosity, self- discipline and a high level of motivation to be able to carry out research in their various areas of specialization and make a significant contribution to knowledge.

The programme has four areas of specialization namely: Project Design, Planning and Implementation; Project Monitoring and Evaluation; Project Management Information Systems and Project Financing. Candidates shall be required to take supporting coursework comprising six units.

To prepare Doctor of philosophy (PhD) candidates for advanced research and writing skills in their chosen area of specialization, candidates shall be required to take supporting coursework comprising seven course units to be done in a minimum of three semesters and a maximum of seven semesters

The PhD programme seeks to orient candidates to the informed and critical application of knowledge to problems and issues concerning project planning and management as a discipline and profession. The Doctoral programme is intended to enhance individual’s capacity and skills for positions involving teaching, consultancy and research in local and international institutions.

Justification:

  • The school has been offering a Postgraduate Diploma and a Masters in Project Planning and Management. The PhD programme, therefore, will provide an opportunity to graduates who wish to obtain a higher degree in the same field.
  • Presently, the School has graduated three cohorts at the Masters level, many of whom are demanding for the PhD programme.
  • The PhD programme is expected to provide positive growth to the school in line with the University mission of being a leading center of learning, scholarship, and professional development, extending frontiers of knowledge through research and creative works
  • The School has gradually expanded in terms of capacity and currently the school has 15 Lecturers with PhD degrees who are actively involved in the implementation of the School’s programmes.    

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Enhance skills in the various areas of specialization in project management;
  • Provide an opportunity to candidates to carry out and present scholarly work;
  • Carry out research in the chosen area of study and submit a PhD thesis
  • Encourage application of creativity and critical thinking toward problem solving.
  • To inculcate desirable values for responsible citizenship and good corporate management

   Nairobi shall be applicable.

  • Type and enter or click on the slot written REGISTER to register your email with the University online application system and proceed.

  • A holder of a Master Degree from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by University of Nairobi Senate in areas of specialization relevant to the programme.

Examination Regulations:

1. All Doctoral students shall be required to take examinations in three (3) common courses and three (3) specialization courses and pass all the six papers before they are allowed to proceed to the second part of the programme.

2.  Continuous assessment shall consist of class presentations, seminar papers, assignments and tests.

3.  A student shall be required to do course work and sit for end of semester examinations.

4. Each taught course shall be examined through a 3 hour written examination paper at the end of the semester in which it is taken.

5.  The pass mark for each course shall be fifty percent (50%).

6.  The final examination shall account for fifty percent  (  50% ) of the marks in each course, while continuous assessment shall account for the remaining fifty percent   (50%) ​​​​​​​

7. A student who fails in any course shall be allowed up to a maximum of two re-sits taken at the semester examinations.

​​​​​​​8.  A student who fails to satisfy the examiners in the second re-sit in any courses shall, on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by Senate may be discontinued.

How to apply

Phd in business management admission requirements.

Applicants must provide the following information for  admission  to Capella programs and specializations:

  • A master’s degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or from an internationally recognized institution
  •  Your official master’s transcripts, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • A valid, government-issued form of photo identification

GRE and GMAT are not required for admission.

International Student Requirements

If you completed your most recent academic coursework, degree, or credential at an institution outside the United States, regardless of your citizenship or where you currently live, you are considered an international applicant.

In addition to the above admission requirements, you will need to submit these materials:

Recommended program sequence Fall 2020 or later

Graduate Academic Integrity Module (Graduate AIM)

Thesis: Thesis completion timeline to be determined by the student with approval from the supervisor and committee. Details of the thesis research timeline will vary by student. Students should consult with their supervisors early in the program to ensure that their proposed timeline results in timely program completion.

  • PLAN 700 Planning Paradigms and Theory (0.5 unit)
  • PLAN 801 Foundations of Planning Scholarship (0.5 unit)

Term 2 (Winter)

Thesis: Submit well-developed research plan by October of second year. Oral presentations for third party review are held in PLAN 802 in the second year.

PhD Research Plan

  • A research plan approved by the supervisory committee by completion of 2 nd year.

A PhD thesis in planning constitutes original scholarship and an innovative contribution to knowledge in planning and related fields. The thesis must demonstrate familiarity with existing work in the field and show ability to design an approach, conduct rigorous and advanced research, present findings and results, and defend conclusions in a scholarly manner. As well, the thesis must clearly demonstrate how it advances knowledge in a chosen area of study within planning. A PhD thesis in planning must be written in compliance with the requirements outlined in the “Thesis” section of the GSPA site

  • Your proposed supervisor’s name
  • If you already have funding or you wish to be considered for any of the available funding
  • A supporting statement (see 'Advice to Applicants' for what to include)
  • Details of your previous university level study
  • Names and contact details of your two referees.

Advice to applicants

  • Identified the specific research project, CDT or dual-award you'd like to apply for or, if you already have funding, determined your own research project and title and discussed this with a supervisor.
  • Contacted the project supervisor and spoken to them about your suitability for the project.
  • Browsed funding you are eligible for and discussed this with your supervisor, if you don't already have your own funding.  
  • Supporting statement: A one or two page statement outlining your motivation to pursue postgraduate research, the area(s) of research you’re interested in, why you want to undertake postgraduate research at Manchester, any relevant research or work experience, the key findings of your previous research experience, and techniques and skills you’ve developed.
  • Certificates and transcripts: Certificates and final transcripts of any completed university-level qualifications and interim transcripts for qualifications in progress. If your transcripts are in a language other than English, you must provide an official English translation. If your current weighted average mark or GPA is not included on these documents, please also include an official document from your university verifying this information.
  • CV: Summarising your academic record and highlighting experience that demonstrates your potential to conduct research.  
  • English language proof: A certificate or evidence demonstrating your English language ability and proficiency. Applications can be considered without this evidence but any offer would be conditional on meeting minimum requirements.  
  • Referees: Names and contact details of two academic referees who we can get in contact with and will support your application.

Interview requirements

It is normally possible to defer entry to another entry point within the academic year, with the approval of your supervisory team and funder (if applicable).

Doctor of Philosophy in Project Planning and Management

COURSE DURATION: Three (3) years | Intakes: January and September

The programme philosophy is guided by the need to connect and inspire the Kenyan community, to provide leadership and stewardship and to give hope and faith to the Kenyan society that it can excel in whatever it chooses to do with passion, moral responsibility and a strong sense of patriotism.

This is a flagship programme to help in achieving African development and specifically Kenya’s vision 2030. The intervention of the University of Nairobi as a centre of excellence in training and capacity enhancement through this programme is a significant effort towards the attainment of international Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The need for the programme was propelled by feedback from the two programmes that needed an opportunity for graduates who wish to advance their studies in the same field. This programme provides positive growth to the university in line with the mission of providing quality university education and training and embodying the aspirations of the Kenyan people and the global community through creation, preservation, integration, transmission and utilization of knowledge.

  LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the programme, the learner should be able to:  

  • Examine various models, theories and practices that learners are likely to encounter in their area of specialization
  • Manage development-oriented projects using current best practices
  • Apply statistical research approaches in analysing and providing the solution to problems in the area of specialization 
  • Create new knowledge through analysis and synthesis of various models, theories and practices in the area of specialization
  • Transmit and document the newly  created knowledge through the various academic forum

MODE OF DELIVERY

Face-Face Mode

Lectures and tutorials using notes, electronic presentations, instruction manuals, group discussions, practical laboratory demonstrations and fieldwork.

Open, Distance Learning, and e-Learning Mode

To be offered off-campus using a multi-media approach, including a variety of self-instructional print and video conferencing materials.

Blended Learning Mode

This is the use of combined face to face and open, distance learning and e-learning modes.

  • A holder of a Master of Arts Degree in Project Planning and Management from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by the Senate.
  • A holder of a Master of Business Administration from any institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate in areas of specialization relevant to the discipline in the programme.
  • A holder of a Master Degree from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate in areas of specialization relevant to the programme.
