Essays that ask you to write about significant achievements fall under the category of

Leadership essay example: The Change Agent

When I was invited to become the Vice President and General Manager at Third Way Associates (TWA)* two years ago, the company was in financial and administrative disorder. Employee retention was poor, and TWA took too long to pay vendors because of poor communication and accounting processes. Cash flow was managed based on immediate needs rather than by the logic of budgets planned by project and city. Sloppy expense reports that were turned in with no receipts were reimbursed to employees.

TWA founders Scott W ____ and Glenn L ____ had good intentions, but spent most of their time selling sponsorships and getting new clients rather than directing and managing the company. As we begin 20XX, TWA is much healthier in every way. Under my direction, vendors are paid in an average of 20 days from date of invoice, instead of 60 days or more. Our cash flow is better administered since I introduced very specific detailed area budgets with over 125 budget lines per city. Because I can give the company founders much better stability and macromanagement vision, the three of us are able to look more to the future rather than simply put out fires.

Despite the difficult economy in 20XX, we not only retained our same clients but also signed several new client agreements for three years or more, including a two-year contract with Big Shoe Company worth $1.3 million. I’ve brought fresh accounts and industries into TWA, including ____ Airlines and Drink Y, among others. Combined, these accounts generated more than $500,000 in 20XX, and we estimate close to $1 million dollars in the following year.

Since my arrival, we have a much wider and broader sales menu which has been crucial to generate more revenue. I’ve expanded our most popular sports events to 25 cities, giving our clients new investment opportunities. These events range from recreational soccer clinic tours to professional soccer games broadcast on TV.

I also expanded our field staff, and at present we have 25 strong and reliable managers who report directly to me from each city. Despite the economy, 20XX was not a bad year for TWA, and this year promises to be even better if we continue our current strategy and continue to work as a team.

Leadership essay analysis

In every paragraph, this writer mentions concrete measures he took to introduce order to a chaotic company that was trying to grow. From instituting budgets with line items, an improved accounts payable system, and recruiting additional big-name accounts, the writer proves how his efforts strengthened the organization.

How can you maximize on your thought leadership experiences?

As you choose among your own experiences as essay material, think about these questions to help you frame answers of substance:

  • What was the obstacle, challenge, or problem that you solved in this accomplishment? A tight client deadline? A complex merger transaction? A new product launch amidst fierce competition?
  • What did you do to rise to the challenge you are writing about? Motivate your team to work overtime? Sell senior management on the deal’s long-term upside? Identify a marketing profile for your product that no competitor can match?
  • What facts demonstrate that your intervention created a happy ending? Did your team submit the project deliverables three days early despite being 20% understaffed? Your client approved the $500 million merger, the largest ever in its industry? Your new product has 20% market share after only one year? What was the impact of your leadership?

Don’t forget about your people leadership skills

What we’ve spoken about until this point revolves mostly on skilled problem-solving, or “thought leadership.” But respected businesspeople need to be equally or even more talented at something we didn’t have a formal name for: people leadership. By effectively leading the thinking of client firms’ problems as well as motivating them to work long hours to develop solutions to these problems and collaborate with clients on implementing them, these businesspeople prove to have what it takes to be exemplary leaders.

So don’t forget to include strong elements of people leadership in your essays. Here are several to keep in mind:

  • Rallying others around a vision. Did you convince your team or group to follow a specific path/solution? How did you do it? Successful clients have talked about handling dissenting opinions diplomatically or presenting their teams’ detailed quantitative evidence for a recommendation. The more you can show that you understood your audience and tailored the content and form of your message to them, the better.
  • Harnessing others’ strengths – and expanding them. Did you provide team members tasks they could handle comfortably based on their capabilities, as well as opportunities to broaden their skills? For example, you may have handed your quant jock teammate the most complicated operations analysis as well as responsibility for leading a key client meeting. In this way, you leverage teammates’ strengths while helping them develop new ones.
  • Getting through tough times. Did you model for your team enviable cool in pressure-cooker situations, maybe helping them keep the big-picture goal in mind or lightening the mood with humor? Did you reward teammates with praise, pizza, or both for working long into the night? Did you pitch in on others’ responsibilities as deadlines loomed? Helping your team handle stress while managing your own is a cornerstone of strong leadership.

Another tip: Look for opportunities to incorporate strong verbs that illustrate your strengths in these areas. Good examples of leadership might incorporate several of the following:

  • Establishing a goal or vision
  • Obtaining buy-in
  • Taking responsibility

The old adage, “Show, don’t tell,” remains a classic bit of wisdom in the writing process. Make that a guiding principle not only in your leadership/achievement essays, but throughout your application.

This is because only a stress-resistant leader has sufficient capabilities to overcome any complexity and not let the anxiety and stress prevent him or her from making proper decisions. Besides, such a leader will most likely have a positive influence on the team, as long as leading by example will motivate the team members to attain the same emotional stability. What is so far familiar about stress resistance as an effective leader’s feature is that it can be either innate or attained. However, although some researchers admit that emotional stability is something one is born with, it is not entirely true; many people still put a great effort into self-improvement, changing the attitude to unfortunate situations, and so on. Therefore, being resistant to stress can be mostly attributed to a personality.

An ability to make high-quality decisions most likely determines the chances for an enterprise’s success. In particular, such quality is incredibly fundamental for a company of any size and professional orientation. Additionally, it is one of the top tasks of a good leader to make final decisions. What he or she should do implies brainstorming, discussing various opinions in the group, making forecasts, analyzing all the pros and cons. However, the leader is the one to make a final decision. Thereby, he is in charge of researching the market, discovering all the hidden truths, and analyzing the organization’s potential and capabilities to result in the most effective decision. As it flows logically from the latter, an ability to make sound quality decisions is purely a professional quality. This leads to the conclusion that one has to work hard to become a genuine leader and master the skill of making effective decisions. 

Overall, the leader may possess a multitude of different skills and master them perfectly. However, what has so far become transparent is that any leader, regardless of which team he leads, must possess three essential qualities. These qualities are commitment to the common goal, ability to handle and resist stress, and, finally, an ability to make effective decisions. All of the three qualities are most likely to be acquired over a lifetime. The statement below leads to the conclusion that even though some qualities can be innate, most are not the ones that leaders are born with. Hence, this answers an essential question: leadership feature is acquired, and not necessarily inborn.

Decide on a structure; format accordingly

Even if your essay about leadership seems not so formal, and you can use personal pronouns, you still need a clear structure.

The best way to write any academic paper is to keep your introduction and conclusion as short as possible. (But no shorter than three sentences and four lines of text). 

Another important tip is to try making all your body paragraphs equal in length. That way, you’ll give the same attention to all the vital points of your essay.

Occupying a leadership position is not the same thing as leading. To lead, you must be able to connect, motivate, and inspire a sense of ownership of shared objectives. Heightening your capacity to lead others requires being able to see how you think and act, and how your behavior affects others. Leading well requires a continuous journey of personal development. Yet people in leadership roles often eschew the long and challenging work of deepening self-insight in favor of chasing after management “tools”— preferably the “quick ’n’ easy” kind, such as personality type assessments that reduce employees to a few simplistic behavioral tendencies. Tools can be handy aids to good leadership. But none of them can take the place of fearless introspection, feedback seeking, and committed efforts to behavioral change for greater effectiveness and increased positive impact on others.

When you’re an individual contributor, your ability to use your technical expertise to deliver results is paramount. Once you’ve advanced into a leadership role, however, the toolkit that you relied on to deliver individual results rarely equips you to succeed through others. Beware of falling into the logical trap of “if I can do this work well, I should be able to lead a team of people who do this work.” This would be true if leading others were akin to operating a more powerful version of the same machinery you operated previously. But it’s not; machinery doesn’t perform better or worse based on what it thinks about you and how you make it feel, while humans do .

Leadership Experience and Reflection

Introduction, leadership experience, personal reflection, reference list.

Within this reflective treatise, I intend to explicitly evaluate my leadership skills and behaviors. Specifically, I will concentrate on my strengths such as being a good participator and action-oriented leader. I will also reflect on the best strategies I should employ to improve my situational leadership abilities by balancing path and goal areas of my behavior and thinking. In the end, I will present an action plan of how I will endeavor to develop the areas I noticed needed some adjustments.

I am a friendly person and I enjoy hearing about the interests of other people by encouraging them to speak. I ask questions about myself and I enjoy creating a lively interaction environment. I have always enjoyed talking with people but I find myself interested in what they have to say when faced with a situation. I have found myself to be a good listener because I don’t interrupt people when they are speaking. Apparently, this has become one of my greatest strengths as a proactive participator. In several circumstances, I have tested my listening skills through continuous personal engagement in different leadership application environments.

For instance, as an aspiring leader, I have always found myself in different situations that require proactive participation in decision making to ensure that the end result is ideal. In one of such situations, I was able to guide a charged interactive meeting into an objective and result-oriented forum. In the end, I realized that my inner ability to accommodate different opinions without prejudice was very consistent.

In the Leadership Assessment Competency, my main weaknesses are coaching and instructing, developing external contacts, and helping the community. I haven’t had much experience with coaching and I need to work on being better at coaching. When it comes to developing external contacts, I am very friendly to others but I have some trouble with networking and staying in contact with people within my social cycle. Specifically, Tyson (2008) opined that the elements of dependency within conscious and unconscious tenets are critical towards understanding expectations and possible challenges (Tyson 2008).

I have discovered from Tyson’s theory that I am an abstract conceptualizer. This means that I learn by thinking, analyzing, and planning before I do anything. For example, when I was faced with the challenge of making a decision on whether to attend a certain peer group meeting or not, I had to think about it, analyze it, and then I felt comfortable to attend since the organizers were people I liked. This means that I am a very analytical person. My strongest skills are interpersonal; I am a good listener, I build strong alliances, and I am concerned about people (Devito 2006).

I identify with the path goal theory proposed by Tyson. This is a leadership theory that I want to continue to improve on and use as a leader in the future. The path-goal theory is about how leaders motivate subordinates to accomplish goals (Tyson, 2004). It is based upon the expectancy theory, using the expectancy beliefs such as, “if I try harder I will perform better”, “if I perform better rewards will follow”; instrumentality belief, and “I value the rewards available”.

According to Payne (2006), leadership motivates when it makes the path to the goal clear, easy to reach, provide coaching, remove obstacles, and make the work itself personally satisfying. I have used this leadership theory in the past as a leader at my church by rewarding youths in my bible class who have studied the passages assigned to them. I have rewarded them with food, gift cards, and used positive reinforcement. I have found these rewards to work well. The strength of this theory is that it “reminds leaders of their purpose, which is to guide and coach employees as they move along the path to achieve a goal” (Devito 2006, p. 34).

Basing on the leadership practice inventory (LPI) assessment that I have undergone during the performance of different duties on a daily basis, the practice enabled me to develop the following three personal competencies. First, I should be a role model. I need to develop self-confidence by elucidating my own individual values. I should set good examples by conforming to the shared values of the community. Secondly, I need to enliven a common vision.

Indeed, I should visualize the future through perceiving to achieve pleasant and excellent possibilities (Tyson 2004). In addition, I should interact with various people to achieve common objectives that are important in group activities. Thirdly, I should learn through challenging inspirations. In fact, I should struggle to get opportunities and whatever I need in life as a way to develop and grow positively.

Moreover, other people like to take risks in order to learn through experimentation. According to McShane and Travaglione (2005), learning is made possible by making mistakes. These elements were possible since I was able to balance my Psyche ID and Superego as discussed by Bass (2008). As an aspiring leader, I found this experience very instrumental in balancing the expectations and my private thoughts into a pattern of continuous ability to remain focused.

The series of dynamics that interacted between my inner self and the environment in the phase leadership mode experienced a metamorphosis as the unconscious choices began to take shape when I started the process of learning how to practice change a tire. Since I was the leader, there were a lot of expectations from my family members to provide motivation and inspiration (Tyson 2008). As a result, my role was firmly established and I was able to connect the vision, mission, and values of the family members to the individual values and needs. This gave us a better picture of the purpose and how each member can contribute to that purpose (Burns 2008).

Expressing loyalty is a noble act showing a sense of worth and gives meaning to life. However, it is not an easy task; it comes with lots of challenges as some people are naturally rebellious. I learned that in spite of the prodigious challenges leaders go through; they can still inspire loyalty and effort in their team since they trust that the decision made by the leader is in the best interest of the group at heart (McShane & Travaglione 2005). This motivates the followers to work hard knowing that the achievement will be bigger than them. It also creates a culture in the group because members feel they have shared values and beliefs (Tyson 2008).

The knowledge is promoted by the ART model proposed by Tyson (2004) to explicitly review the link between task and role as enshrined in the tenet of authority. To inspire loyalty and effort, I learned that I have to be a good communicator. I have to seek opportunities to communicate. At the same time, I attempted to increase the volume and frequency of communication. Having in mind that 90% of communication is not about what you say but how you say it; I was able to communicate with passion, humility, and enthusiasm in line with leadership aspirations (Bennis and Goldsmith 2003).

Being in a position to offer personal authority is often motivated by past and present experiences, situational factors, and skills within the structure of a group. Using simple words such as ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ has a great impact to inspire the team. Maintaining eye contact, having a relaxed body, and using a warm tone of voice does have an immense impact on the team members. As a leader, I can never be egocentric since it is not about me but about others.

I have to listen to everyone since this encourages them and I also gain great ideas and insight as well (Feist and Feist 2006). In expectations management, I learned that one has to remain consistent by matching his or her words and actions. As opined by Nelson-Jones (2005), beliefs should match with actions as well as my results. With consistency, everyone will see what you believe in. Every person has to be clear about his or her beliefs and make them known. At the same time, they have to remain disciplined and accountable to their own values and guiding principles (Nelson-Jones 2005). This aspect has greatly inspired my ability as a good listener.

I discovered that leadership has to be clear in the job description so that every subject knows the expectations for every day. In order to be successful, I have to proactively prepare personal insight to ensure that the outcome matches any expectations. These should then be communicated with regards to what is supposed to be done and setting out clear guidelines to be followed in order to limit space for vagueness or the contradiction of roles. This would show that the rules and regulations set down apply to everybody including me. This indicates that a good leader is consistent (Nelson-Jones 2005).

LPI assessment is important because it enables a person to perceive how people evaluate his or her leadership skills. Actually, LPI has helped me to be an effective team player. This is a self-assessment strategy that enabled me to inquire about people’s opinions in order to compare their suggestions with my perspectives as a way to improve my personality and leadership skills (Hellriegel & Slocum 2011). For instance, during the role allocation stage, I managed to control the tension and possible conflict that was growing within me since I am rarely interested in the technical parts of any task. I decided to take this part since the conscious and subconscious choices within my personality were well balanced (Sockeley-Zalabak 2011).

As opined by Tyson (2004), past experiences may have a direct influence on the roles of an individual. I learned that LPI assesses human acts that people utilize when interacting with different peoples (Tyson 2004). This assessment is helpful especially for leaders who intend to know how they influence people and how to communicate effectively. In addition, leadership skills are normally influenced by situational and personal experiences. First, I have to build an attitude of encouragement is important in a group (Tyson 2008). Actually, people should appreciate and encourage positive contributions. Secondly, I have to share objectives since they guide a person to embrace desired outcomes while discouraging unfavorable attitudes.

Personal experiences are based on three aspects. First, my past experiences influence people to be aware of which human acts have a positive outcome. Secondly, my personal attitude usually influences people on how to interact with me. Lastly, my self-esteem enabled me to develop inner strength in carrying out various actions (Arslan & Staub 2013). I was able to apply the principle of self-assessment when making general statements to minimize ideological variances. As the weeks progressed, my management approach was maturing at a slower rate than my participatory leadership style since my subconscious mind had placed the management approach within the tenet of experimentation (West 2006; Nelson-Jones 2005).

As opined by Greenleaf (2002), a challenging experience normally compels a person to examine his attitude. Indeed, an individual will attempt to improve his approach to resolve a challenge (Greenleaf 2002). I only realized the steady consequence of my leadership approach in the stage of accomplishing the unit synergy testing exercise. I should improve on excessive independence and intra and interpersonal communication since the two influence the level of task orientation with the third party (Kidd 2006). In fact, I find it difficult to challenge some people for their habit of showing up late for appointments due to the fear of being rejected.

As the weeks progressed, my basic assumptions of people were replaced by an interactive process which was characterized by a mature exchange between the containers (members) and the projector (leader) to steer the valence in line with Bion’s work group model (Tyson 2004). In order to achieve transformational leadership, it was vital for me to recognize the presence of the vice of postponing activities. This should be followed by creating a strategy to address the possible causes of indecisiveness. Through prioritizing and proper scheduling of activities, it was easy for me to manage this leadership module (Eriksen 2009).

At present, I am implementing transformational leadership strategies and have been successful in time management and limiting unpleasant detractors such as lateness, diverted attention, and discussion of private issues during meetings. I have been successful in self-reward creation (Wren 2005). However, the main challenge was to identify an independent reviewer of personal transformational leadership initiatives since I sometimes failed to make sure that other people are committed to a course of action.

I discovered that situational leadership engages in an active process of learning through promotion, facilitation, and rewarding collective learning results in the practical arena. The three building blocks of situational leadership include learning intrapersonal performance; supportive learning environment, concrete learning processes, and practice leadership that reinforces performance (Baxter 2014). Through using the diagnostic tools, I was able to assess the areas of personal situational leadership that require urgent improvement moving the person closer to an ideal leadership sphere (West 2006).

Self-initiative in situational leadership plays a significant role in setting up the leadership environment for situational occurrence management from external factors (Hui-Wen et al. 2010). My self guided approach is based on collaborative procedures that involve designing specific leadership experiences to organize situational management goals on how to monitor automatic response; recognize the relationship between these responses and cognition ways to test the validity of the relationships, and measures to apply to substitute the distorted thoughts with more realistic situational redress (Andreadis 2009).

Since research methods focus on the development of a range of skills that are designed to help the individual to cope with a variety of life situations, they remain indispensable to the personal initiatives I had internalized in practicing a proactive balance in self situational leadership management within the conscious decision-making process to remain active (West 2006). Despite the commitment to direct my skills towards proactive leadership, I had to deal with the challenge of balancing personal perceptions and realities that exist in task management. I have realized that I have the valence of leadership in LPI since I was able to handle personal fears.

I have been successful in applying the three types of leadership styles involving a realization that a challenge exists, the transformation of this challenge into a development goal after which implementation step concludes by developing a solution to the challenge. However, there is a need for improvement in keeping my situational management parameters within the goals and duties at hand (Avolio 2010). Common hurdles in leadership management include internal and external influences that slow down productivity and the ability to proactively handle challenges of the assignment (West 2006).

Therefore, it is factual that productive leadership is directly and positively proportional to the productivity level exhibited in an individual. In my view, it is important to minimize these hurdles to promote and encourages goal achievement within a set plan. I am currently monitoring counterproductive behavior as the negative parameter which limits leadership productivity as a result of these hurdles. Generally, this unsolicited behavior is often associated with ineffective performance (West 2006).

In order to understand the impacts of productive and counterproductive leadership on performance and productivity, my strength has been the ability to establish the scope and characteristics of each behavior module associate with leadership huddles (Casimir & Waldman 2007). However, the strategy requires a systematic and periodic review of the parameters of professionalism, organization, respect, optimal performance, and discipline.

Unfortunately, these indicators are difficult to quantify. Therefore, my productive leadership behavior stresses the need for active cooperation between personality and the roles assigned in the planning and execution of the set targets for the assigned roles within the parameters of situational leadership, task-person orientation, and transformational leadership (Chen, Tsui, & Farh 2002).

Despite task orientation being rated as a high self-leadership assessment strategy, my action planning is of importance to create a solution-oriented task and strategy implementation secession for quantifying task orientation levels (Powell 2005).

Through designing personal task management model levels, my task orientation module has remained active in developing dependence of interest attached to an activity, creating proactive relationships, and monitoring their interaction with physical and psychological health. Eventually, it has paid off since I have learned to appreciate the essence of tolerance and the necessity to stay active. However, I should improve on excessive independence, intra, and interpersonal communication since the two influence the level of task orientation with the third party (Lipgar 2006).

Specifically, transformational leadership identifies a range of problematic situations an individual faces in his or her social environment and generates multiple alternative solutions to those problems. I had to lay a series of procedures that are necessary to achieve desired results rather than postponing response strategies. I have been successful in time management and reducing unpleasant distractions. I have been successful in self-reward creation.

However, the main challenge was to identify an independent reviewer of personal transformational leadership initiatives (Cardenas & Crabtree 2009). I would suggest an improvement in the urgent matrix for duties since it doesn’t remain constant in different situations (Kouzes and Posner 2002). My situational leadership has engaged an active process of learning remaining active, focused, and result-oriented in accomplishing different duties. I am a motivator towards situational leadership management (Wren 2005).

Conclusively, the learning experience and group assignment reaffirmed my leadership skills and ability to manage group dynamics. Apparently, the theories discussed confirm that I am a focused, task-oriented, and participatory leader. However, I need to make adjustments in my situational management parameters within goals and duties at hand since reflection reveals that I not consistent in this area.

I need to be more realistic and accommodative to ensure that I remain sober when handling different situations related to leadership development. In order to make this improvement, I have proposed to enroll in a self-awareness class to acquire the basic skills required to make decisions under pressure and in dynamic environments.

The class will run for the fourth month. During this period, I will create a successful benchmarking blueprint by evaluating my performance through the creation of controlled experiments for testing my performance under pressure. I expect to improve the parameter of situational leadership management after four months of training. I will determine the success of training upon the results at the beginning and the end of the fourth month period. I am hopeful that the adjustment progress will be satisfactory.

The Problem

The identified problem related to practice is the spread of Clostridium difficile in the Emergency Department. Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a prevalent problem as it occurs after patients in the ED use antibiotics or after being exposed overnight to the ED environment (McDonald, Kutty & Kaplan, 2017). According to a nationwide U.S inpatient database, there has been an increase of C. difficile Infections by more than 43% since 2001 (Davies et al., 2014).

This problem is related to my area of practice in the emergency department and the healthcare field given that C.

difficile infections are very challenging to control. Despite the increased surveillance strategies instituted by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 862 incident cases of C. difficile reported in 2017 (McDonald, Kutty & Kaplan, 2017). C. difficile marks as the leading cause of healthcare related gastrointestinal illness and weighs heavily on the United States healthcare system leading to over 14,000 casualties. It is also associated with a financial burden of over $ 2.1 billion on an annual scale (Davies et al., 2014). In essence, the level of C. difficile is endemic in healthcare organizations and is highly associated with previous utilization of antibiotics. Conclusively, while the use of antibiotics in the ED and exposure to the ED environment is associated with increased cases of C. difficile, there are other cases that occur beyond the traditional healthcare settings that are community-associated (van Dorp et al., 2016). It is established that 62% of the cases are classified as Community Associated with 18% categorized under Community-Onset Health Facility Onset (McDonald, Kutty & Kaplan, 2017).

The Investigation

In the investigation phase of this project, numerous research, as well as non-research sources, were reviewed. Primarily, peer-reviewed journals from PubMed, Journal of Infection and Public Health as well as the Journal of International Medical Research. More significantly, documents and reports released by the CDC were more helpful in reviewing the statistics related to the prevalence of C. difficile. Also, getting insights from the Medical Operations Supervisors, the Assistant Manager, and the Registered Nurses at the ED of the healthcare facility where I work was extensively helpful and led to a meaningful revelation.

From these sources, it was affirmed that the spread of C. difficile has proved difficult to interrupt given that the patents who are affected in the Emergency Department release large volumes of spores that are then found in several surfaces of the patient rooms and are often transmitted through outside the rooms as fomites on the equipment used by providers (Davies et al., 2014).

Evidence Collected

The research and non-research sources showed that there has been an increase of incidents related to C. difficile, as well as mortality rate in the clinical settings across regions beyond the nation’s geographical borders over the last decade. The reports from the CDC revealed that C. difficile has taken Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus’ place and now marks as the leading healthcare-associated infection in the United States (McDonald, Kutty & Kaplan, 2017). Moreover, the rated of hospitals discharges with C. difficile as the diagnosis showed an increase from 3.82 to 8.75 per 1,000 discharged over a decade (Davies et al., 2014).

The spread of C. difficile in the Emergency Department have led to increased cases among individuals aged 65 and above (McDonald, Kutty & Kaplan, 2017). Preliminary research sources that reviewed the United States vital records showed that the rate of death certificates with enterocolitis caused by C. difficile marked as the leading cause of death among the geriatric population brought to the ED. While there has been a slight reduction of cases of death related to the spread of C. difficile, the age-related death rate of C. difficile rose from 2.0 deaths among 100, 000 populations to 2.3 deaths among 100, 000 population of 100, 0000 (Lessa et al., 2015). The revelation of this endemic issue calls for the need to institute surveillance systems to review as well as monitor the trends of this infection and identify public health actions.

Current findings of the Spread of C. difficile in the ED

While preliminary studies show the prevalence of the infection in clinical facilities, current data findings show the definite status of the problem. Current research still shows that C. difficile is the most common healthcare related infection. It is revealed that in 2015, over 55.7 inpatients were treated with antibiotics, which led to an increase in new cases by 30% (Evans & Safdar, 2015). Moreover, it is established that there are 453,000 new cases of C. difficile and 83,000 recurrences as well as 29,300 deaths every year (Davies et al., 2014). According to the CDC (2014), C. difficile marks as an imminent threat given that 65.8% of new onsets are healthcare related and only 24.2% of patients infected experience symptoms before being discharged. Conclusively, van Dorp et al., (2016) reveals that the rate of reinfections and recurrence of the infection ranks at 40% despite the significant strides made in developing preventive measures.

Contributing Factors

There are several aspects leading to the spread of C. difficile in the ED. One of the factors is the proximity to patients with C. difficile given that the infection is airborne. Moreover, older patients are prone to severe chronic and comorbid conditions and often make more visits to the ED compared to other age groups further making them vulnerable to such infections (CDC, 2012). Lack of proper hygiene and improper management of equipment in the ED is also associated with the spread of the infection. Davies et al., (2014) showed that hospital-acquired infection can spread outside the ED as well as the hospital through food and drinks further increasing the incidents of new onsets.

Moreover, it was established that asymptomatic carriers of toxigenic C. difficile brought into the ED bear the imminent risk of infecting other patients in the ED and the clinical setting which explains the sluggish reduction rates of C. difficile infections and associated mortality rate. Van Dorp et al., (2016) add that patients presented to the ED with a history of using commonly prescribed heartburn medication are correlated to high rates of C. difficile. Conclusively, in a study conducted by Smits et al., (2016), it was established that patients with greater body mass index exceeding 35 kg/m2 are associated with increased cases of C. difficile (Longtin et al., 2017). For this reason, creating surveillance and preventive measures ought to be based on these current findings thereby ensuring that new onsets are mitigated and the infection controlled efficiently.

Proposed Solution

Currently, most of the preventive measures for C. difficile are used after patients become symptomatic. However, preventing the spread of this endemic infection ought to be based on early prevention efforts that mitigate the onset of adverse symptoms. Among the proposed solution is educating care providers how to identify patients at a high risk of being infected such as elderly patients, patients prescribed with antibiotics, as well as those prescribed with common heartburn medication (Longtin et al., 2017). This measure should be integrated with the establishment of a system for early reporting of patients with C. difficile symptoms to the clinical facility’s infection control delegate to ensure that the spread of the infection is mitigated.

Moreover, it would be imperative to provide training and educational programs to the staff tasked with environmental cleaning. This measure should be integrated with evaluating policies, procedures, practices as well as audits evaluate the efficacy of their cleaning practices (CDC, 2014). The ED should also contain policies and procedures that outline the responsibilities and tasks for disinfecting and cleaning items for ED patients including intravenous poles and multi-use electronics (Collignon et al., 2016). Finally, given that patients in the ED are often examining room with more than one patient, it would be imperative to ensure that patients with C. difficile are examined in a single room with that has a dedicated toilet.

The rationale for Proposed Solution

Providing education and training to care providers in the ED is essential given that prior preventive approaches focus on asymptomatic patients. For this reason, educating them on how to identify patients with C. difficile early would go an extra mile towards mitigating the spread of the infection as well as decreasing deaths associated with the infection among geriatric patients. Integrating this approach with the development of a system for early reporting of patients with C. difficile symptoms to the clinical facility’s infection control delegate is imperative as has been established that the age-related death rate tied C. difficile rose from 2.0 deaths among 100, 000 populations to 2.3 deaths among a population of 100, 000 (CDC, 2014).

On the other hand, educating and training staff responsible for cleaning and disinfecting is imperative as patients with C. difficile release large volumes of spores that are then found in several surfaces of the room and are often transmitted to other patients through fomites on the equipment used by staff. Developing policies and procedures outlining tasks and responsibilities would go an extra mile towards establishing adherence and discipline among those responsible for cleaning and disinfecting (Collignon et al., 2016). Conclusively, examining patients separately in a single room is also an essential approach following the fact that the infection is airborne and the spores released by patients with the infection may be transmitted to other patients.

Resources to Implement the Proposed Solution and Cost-Benefit Analysis

The implementation of the proposed solution requires additional resources. Primarily, it would be imperative to acquire audio, video as well as print materials. These materials would go an extra mile towards facilitating the education and training programs. With the resources, control charts would be created to displays the rates and cases of C. difficile that have been recorded in the healthcare facility over the past 5 years thereby determining the trends and how they can be addressed with early surveillance (Anderson et al., 2017).

Moreover, with the video and print materials would be used to create presentations on the effective cleaning and disinfecting routines and methods for staff responsible for environmental cleaning and disinfecting. An educator for educating the nurses and those responsible for environmental cleaning and disinfecting will also be required. Despite the costs that will be associated with these materials, the end result will put the healthcare organization in a competitive position.

Primarily, the strategy will lead to the prompt detection of high-risk patients and decrease the spread of the infection to other patients (Collignon et al., 2016). Moreover, it will lead to the prompt treatment of patients with C. difficile further increasing patient safety and quality. The increased patient safety and satisfaction will reflect positively on the organization’s image and improve its reputation (Ford II et al.., 2018). As a result., the healthcare facility would have an increased patient influx as well as decreased costs correlated to the treatment and diagnosis of C. difficile.

A Timeline for Implementation

In the first week would include orientation, where the clinical staff operating in the ED would be brought up to speed on what was about to take place. Moreover, current practices would be evaluated as well as current practices that may be leading to increased rates of C. difficile. The second week would entail engaging relevant stakeholders to support the implementation of the changes. Moreover, formal teams of healthcare providers and the staff responsible for cleaning and disinfecting would be created. On the other hand, the third week would entail critically appraising, evaluating and synthesizing evidence.

Moreover, this week would also entail assessing and eliminating probable barriers to implementation. The fourth and fifth week would entail establishing reporting procedures for symptomatic patients and developing procedures for tasks and responsibilities for cleaning and disinfecting. The sixth week would entail training and educating the teams. The seventh week will include requesting approval to implement the new practice and processes and implementing them. Conclusively, the performance evaluation and refining of the practice and process would be a continuous process.

Key Stakeholders

It would be imperative to derive that the implementation of the new practice process and procedures for mitigating the spread of C. difficile is dependent on the buy-in of the ED healthcare staff. More precisely the management, including the chief medical officer (CMO), Clinical Nurse Manager, Clinical Operations Manager, Assistant Manager, the Chief Financial Officer as well as a representative of the county health department. These stakeholders would go an extra mile towards contributing to the completion of the change process. Primarily, they would encourage the clinical staff in the ED to take part in ensuring that the implementation process runs smoothly. Moreover, they will play a very integral role in ensuring that the shareholders and board members of the organization have a full scope of the problem and approve the operations to address it. They will also aid in the development of effective C. difficile cases’ reporting strategies as well as the creating policies and procedures for cleaning and disinfecting (Guinn et al., 2016).

As key stakeholders in the leadership position, they will be influential in gaining the support of relevant ED members while emphasizing on the significance of implementing the intervention. Lastly, communication plays a very integral role in ensuring a transition runs smoothly. For this reason, these leaders would ensure that the channels of communication stay open among key stakeholders thereby compelling them to give their input on role development, voice their concerns as well as take part in reinforcing the accomplishment of major objectives (Ford II et al.., 2018).

The Chief Medical Officer and the Clinical Nurse Manager are among the key stakeholders who will help in the planning stage of the intervention implementation. This is because they oversee the authorization of relevant resources that would be employed during education. On the other hand, the Chief Financial Officer would oversee the budgeting and allocation of the training and education resources while the Assistant Manager will aid in fine-tuning the proposal before submitting to the board members for review for approval. The other leaders would help in the development of processes and procedures as well as influencing the key ED staff members to embrace the intervention.

How the Proposed Solution could be Implemented and Measured

After the current practices of preventing the spread of C. difficile have been reviewed, a team of nurses responsible for surveilling, diagnosing and treating patients and healthcare staff members responsible for cleaning and disinfecting the ED environment would be formed. They would be trained and educated by the educator and brought up to speed about the new policies and procedures for preventing the spread of C. difficile. With comprehensive training and education of the clinical staff members, the management would introduce the new practice policies after the chair of the board approves the interventions.

On the other hand, the success of the interventions will be evaluated by several possible metrics. Primarily, the rates of patients infected with C. difficile in the ED within the first month of implementation (Ford II et al.., 2018). Then the rate of deaths related to C. difficile among patients who visited the ED within the first six months since implementation. An analytical model would also be used to assess the cost-effectiveness and success of the intervention given that C. difficile is a recurrent infection that has proven to be challenging to mitigate over the past decade (World Health Organization, 2015). Conclusively, increased patients’ influx as a result of improved patient safety and quality care.

Explanation of Roles

Throughout the investigation and proposal project, I have assumed different roles that have guided the completion of this project. Primarily, I achieved my role as a scientist by employing evidence-based research and practices to establish that the spread of C. difficile in the ED is an endemic problem that requires prompt interventions. I achieved this through the developing scientific inquiries that were geared towards creating clinical decisions as well as through collecting and analyzing data correlated to C. difficile infection risk factors, detection and prevention measures based on evidence-based practices and research.

My role as a detective was achieved by exploring and surveying the healthcare staff working in the ED to identify the possible factors leading to the spread of the infection among patients in the ED. Conclusively, my role as a manager of the healing environment was achieved through the development, coordination as well as empowering others to learn and increase prevention awareness of C. difficile infection to unsuspecting individuals thereby increasing human dignity and welfare.

Consequently, through the development of a well-thought-out intervention with the ability to improve patient safety as well as quality care while encouraging key stakeholders to take part in the development process, my role as a manager was attained.

Personal Leadership Experience: Case Analysis

Introduction, introduction to management frames, political frame theory, symbolic frame, political and symbolic frame model’s application in my case study.

This paper is a personal leadership experience analysis of my encounter with a community-based organization where I worked as an intern in 2018. The organization faced serious management challenges triggered by the decision to focus on gender dynamics in the community. The organization’s primary objective is to alleviate poverty from society and developed a turnaround strategy of women inclusion in their programs to increase the overall effectiveness. Arguably, the changes were implemented without involving various stakeholders, leading to reluctance and conflicts among different stakeholders, employees, and departmental heads. I differed with the administration on the gender inclusion implementation strategies adopted. In my view, specific organizational effectiveness models such as the four effectiveness frames proposed by Bolman and Deal (2017) could help alleviate the challenge. This paper will analyze the leadership challenges I experienced with the community-based organization based on leadership effectiveness frames with a primary focus centered on the political and symbolic approaches. In the paper, I will introduce the management frames as studied in the course, discuss political and symbolic strategies, and give an account of critical analysis of the effectiveness of the frame model’s application in addressing conflicts in the community-based organization before reviewing the management frames application.

Leadership challenges are typical for any organization operating as a going concern, and flawed approaches to addressing the challenges can lead to failure. According to Bolman and Deal (2017), while different leadership models exist, the most appropriate strategies depend on circumstances. Leadership frames include the human resource, symbolic, structural, and political. They also involve behaviors, practices, and philosophies associated with good leadership. The premise is that when the effective models are implemented in the right way, they improve the organization regardless of the industry the organization operates. However, the practice is that leaders do not apply all the four frames equally but concentrate on one or two of their preference. Most leaders also lack the skills, experience, and expertise in using the model (Bolman & Deal, 2017). Effective leadership coordinates the employees and organizational departments, boosts morale, and promotes team spirit. An effective leader is effective in mobilizing employees towards achieving corporate objectives.

The political frame is a leadership philosophy that views an organization as a political system composed of people with diverse goals. The theory assumes that all employees and groups in an organization have individual goals to achieve that are different from that of the business. Healthy politics involves ensuring that a leader incorporates employees’ and groups’ interests in developing organizational objectives. Political frame theory requires a leader to manipulate the allocating of corporate resources to influence organizational goals.

In managing politics, an effective leader addresses decision-making skills, power, and conflict. Power is the component of politics that equips a leader with convincing followers to buy their ideas of achieving organizational goals. A leader adopts position power, alliance power, coercive control, or expertise to influence the people. Decision-making is the component of politics that determines the courses of action a leader should take in different situations. It includes defining the problem, critical examination, developing a possible course of action to be adopted, acting on the most appropriate course of action. Poor management of politics leads to conflict, which hinders people and groups from achieving common goals.

Symbolic frame holds that organizational leadership can be made effective by supporting the firm’s goals and vision through upholding its historical background, values, and popular stories. The organization’s history as held by the people is integrated and maintained in creating a culture that supports the organizational vision. According to Bolman and Deal (2017), institutional faith culture believes formidable from the culture of attaining organizations objectives. Organizational goals, activities, and decisions are promoted using events, ceremonies, and rituals. The different symbolic undertakings create meaning to the culture and help a leader identify figurative representations that motivate people to work (Bolman & Deal, 2017). Based on the theory, a leader can only achieve organizational goals if the goals define and be defined by symbolic expressions.

My leadership case had experienced poor leadership at different levels of management. The four leadership approaches proposed by Bolman and Deal (2017) could help the organization alleviate the management challenges the community-based entity faced. The above discussed management frames could all be used to develop the organization’s leadership policy. However, political and extended structures have more application in addressing the challenges faced. The challenge of varied opinions on how to run the organization can be addressed through adopting political frame elements. The theory requires the manager to adopt excellent decision-making conflict resolution skills and eliminate competition wasteful competition for power (Bolman & Deal, 2017). The down-up decision-making technique should be implemented in making important decisions for the organization. Employees will not resist the changes they proposed to the organization. The leadership should not implement gender-based changes without adequate sensitization to all the employees. In my leadership case study, when the organization sensitized the stakeholders on including women in the poverty eradication program, a section of the employees supported the idea. The support was a clear indication that the collaborative decision-making associated with the political frame worked in the study case.

The symbolic frame requires the integration of the community norms in decision-making. The society, in my case, perceives women inclusion as a way of benefiting women at the expense of men. The firm should participate in integrating its norms, values, and culture in designing organizational visions. Notably, most policies did not welcome the gender dynamic policies. They felt that the organization would get viewed as advancing the women’s gender instead of addressing the entire community poverty eradication.

Analysis of the leadership frames helps understand that they are not the only techniques of reshaping organizations and improve their productivity. Other important insights to be emphasized in the case beyond the four frames include cross-sector collaboration, sustainability, communication, differences’ handling, globalization, and virtual environment model. Again, the frames should not be used in isolation or one after the other, but their implementation should be concurrent (Bolman & Deal, 2017). The four frames are equally important and include management ways of thinking which should be adopted by all managers at different levels. The application of the leadership is not successful where there is poor goal selection. The frames are ambiguous as they do not explain the exact approaches to be adopted at a time. After analyzing the structures, the central question of concern remains: How can I effectively apply cross-sector collaboration, sustainability, communication, differences’ handling, globalization, and virtual environment model to attain the organizational vision of my leadership experience case.

Building on the reflection you did to complete your Leadership Vision Board, now is the time to develop your personal leadership philosophy, as it stands today. Keep in mind that this will be a living document that you can return to throughout your life and career and tweak as you enter different seasons of life.  Do not use ChatGPT or other AI platforms to write your philosophy statement. 

My name is Erika Brandt, I am a sophomore at UCF studying Health Science with a Biology minor following the premed-track to potentially become a cardiologist in the future. I have lived in three different countries, Venezuela, Colombia, and the US, and moved around five times. My hobbies are taking care of plants, doing Pilates, running, and cooking healthy foods. I consider myself to be a very open-minded person due to living in different places, and caring which is reflected in my hobbies: I care about myself, my interests, goals, and the people I work with.

My leadership style is being a Servant Leader; what motivates me is leading a group to work towards a greater good to create a better community around us. I like my work environment to be friendly, where everyone feels in a safe place to express their ideas, opinions, and concerns. I value clear communication where all the members of the group or organization deliver a message which gets responded as soon as possible; I also do not like when staff have incomplete information about what is done: everyone should know the good and the bad things that have happened during the job to learn from our mistakes and get the job done better in the future.

As previously mentioned, my purpose as a leader has always been to give to the community. My core values include caring, being compassionate, listening, and working hard. In my opinion, this aligns perfectly with my professional priority to become a Cardiologist; this is because I will be leading a group of healthcare workers to serve the community and improve our patients’ quality of lives. My expectations for myself and my group is for all of us to be passionate about our work and help each other with any issues during the work. I want us to do our job with care and love for others and do it the best way possible; if this is done, then I would consider the result a success.

From my leadership experiences around campus, I have learned to work on a team and step up when needed. In my time as the Treasurer for the Venezuelan Student Association, I had to step up several times as the leader of the events in case the President and the Vice-President were taking care of other tasks. In Be The Match, I had to also start doing the Social Media Director role at top of my Volunteer Officer position since our last Social Media dropped out of the club. On the other hand, from LEAD, I have learned that collaboration, common purpose, and commitment are the three C’s from the seven C’s that are most important for me in a working environment, and values that I have applied ever since I learned them.

All in all, my leadership philosophy consists of being committed to a cause that benefits the community. This must be done by performing the best possible job we can with love, compassion, and care. With this, among the team, there must be good communication and respect.
