About the Digital India Scheme

The purpose of the meeting was the bring a digital revolution in India by making government services accessible to the remotest areas of the country. 

The government has invited private organisations to invest in the Digital India scheme. The execution cost of this flagship project was 1 lac crore rupees. This money was invested to develop government services and digital platforms so that people living in rural areas can have easy access.

Aim of Digital India

The aim of Digital India is simple; digital transformation of the national economy. However, to support this national-level scheme, the government has launched several parallel projects or sub-schemes. These schemes are:

Report on India’s Trillion Dollar Digital Opportunity Released India can create up to $1 trillion of economic value from the digital economy in 2025 India is the second-fastest digitizing economy amongst 17 leading economies of the world Thirty digital themes can be scaled up nationally to accelerate progress in nine priority areas India’s digital economy of the future could generate productivity and output sufficient to support 55 million to 60 million workers in 2025

With a strong foundation of digital infrastructure and expanded digital access through Digital India Programme of the Government, India is now poised for the next phase of growth — creation of tremendous economic value and empowerment of citizens as new digital applications permeate sector after sector.

India can create up to $1 trillion of economic value from the digital economy in 2025, up from around $200 billion currently

• India’s digital consumer base is the second largest in the world and growing at the second-fastest rate amongst major economies. India’s inclusive digital model is narrowing the digital divide within the country and bringing benefits of technology to all segments of people.
• Half the potential economic value of $1 trillion in 2025 could come from new digital ecosystems in diverse sectors, including financial services, agriculture, healthcare, logistics, jobs and skills market, e-governance and other areas.

The Digital India program, launched in July 2015, is a flagship program of the Government of India that is transforming the country into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Building on this foundation, India now has a massive opportunity to further scale up its digital economy.

These are the findings of ‘ India’s Trillion-Dollar Digital economy’ , a new report by the Government of India’s Ministry for Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), released by the Union Minister for Law & Justice and Electronics & Information technology, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad in Mumbai today. The report takes stock of the massive digitally-enabled change that is underway and lays out a vision and roadmap for the coming years. The fact-based report is a collaborative effort, with data and inputs from a wide range of government, business and civil society entities, undertaken over the past year.

Releasing the report, the Union Minister said, “India has nearly half a billion internet users and their number is rising rapidly in every part of the country. This will create a huge market for a host of digital services, platforms, applications, content, and solutions. Overall, India could potentially see a five-fold increase in economic value from digital transformation by 2025, representing an attractive opportunity for global and local businesses, start-ups, and innovators to invest in emerging technologies (like AI, blockchain, or drones) in ways that are customized to India’s needs.’’

The ‘Team India’ spirit of partnership and collaboration will be critical, across central and state governments, the private sector, industry associations and the social sector. The Minister said at the event, “Working with all stakeholders, India can build on the digital dynamism we have already created to deepen, widen, and scale up its digital economy in the coming years, creating huge economic value and empowering millions of people across all walks of life.”

The report finds that India can create up to $1 trillion of economic value from the digital economy in 2025, with about half of the opportunity originating in new digital ecosystems that can spring up in diverse sectors of the economy. Currently, India’s digital economy generates about $200 billion of economic value add.

India is the second-fastest digitizing economy amongst 17 leading economies of the world , according to the report’s Country Digital Index, that is based on 30 metrics to measure digital adoption in 17 mature and emerging digital economies, including Brazil, China, Indonesia, Russia, South Korea, Sweden, and the United States.

Even within India, the digital divide is narrowing fast , as less affluent states leapfrog to catch up with more affluent ones on dimensions such as internet subscriber growth, density of internet infrastructure, and Common Service Centres.

On the back of rapid progress in internet infrastructure and usage, thirty digital themes can be scaled up nationally to accelerate progress in nine priority areas . The report lays out a roadmap for Digital India 2.0, and outlines the enablers required in nine strategic areas, ranging from creating 21st century IT infrastructure and software capabilities, to using digital to serve key national priorities, such as healthcare, education and energy for all, doubling farmers’ income, Make in India, next-gen financial services, jobs and skills of the future, and e-governance. These themes can help create up to $1 trillion of economic value in 2025, and empower millions of workers, entrepreneurs, small and large businesses, and consumers in rural and urban parts of the country.

India’s digital economy of the future could generate productivity and output sufficient to support 55 million to 60 million workers in 2025 . Digital technologies fundamentally change work and create demand for new types of skills and job roles whichresults in further augmentation of high productivity, highly skilled jobs. Aside from digital coders and solution providers, many types of work will become digitally-enabled and necessitate workers to be trained as users of digital technologies. For example, delivery personnel and drivers in the logistics and transportation sectors, healthcare workers, or advisory service agents in areas such as financing and agriculture, will all need retraining.

Capturing the potential value of a $1 trillion digital economy will require concerted action and extensive collaboration between government and business entities . For India to achieve its full digital potential and become the digital factory of the world, cross-cutting enablers are needed, like improving ease of operations for digital businesses and unlocking the flow of capital to them, facilitating a booming open-API ecosystem, supporting digital innovators through government procurement, and strengthening centres of higher education and innovation in new and emerging technologies like AI. The report further explores steps that will enable the move from the “business-as-usual” digital trajectory that would create economic value of $500 billion to $650 billion by 2025 towards the full potential scenario where the digital economy can create economic value of $1 trillion by 2025.

Approach and Methodology

• Ministries / Departments / States would fully leverage the Common and Support ICT Infrastructure established by the Government of India .
• The existing/ ongoing e-Governance initiatives would be revamped to align them with the principles of Digital India. Scope enhancement, Process Reengineering, use of integrated & interoperable systems and deployment of emerging technologies like Cloud & mobile would be undertaken to enhance delivery of Government services to citizens .
• States would be given flexibility to identify for inclusion additional state-specific projects, which are relevant to their socio-economic needs.
• e-Governance would be promoted through a centralised initiative to the extent necessary, to ensure citizen centric service orientation.
• Successes would be identified and their replication promoted proactively.
• Public Private Partnerships would be preferred wherever feasible.
• Adoption of Unique ID would be promoted to facilitate identification, authentication and delivery of benefits.
• Restructuring of NIC would be undertaken to strengthen the IT support to all government departments at the Centre and State levels.
• The positions of Chief Information Officers (CIO) would be created in at least 10 key ministries so that various e-Governance projects could be designed, developed and implemented faster.
• DeitY would create necessary senior positions within the department for managing the programme.
• Central Ministries / Departments and State Governments would have the overall responsibility for implementation of various Mission Mode and other projects under this Programme. Considering the need for overall aggregation and integration at the national level, it is considered appropriate to implement Digital India as a programme with well defined roles and responsibilities of each agency involved.

A programme management structure would be established for monitoring implementation. Key components of the management structure would consist of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) for according approval to projects, a Monitoring Committee headed by the Prime Minister - External website that opens in a new window , a Digital India Advisory Group chaired by the Minister of Communications and IT , an Apex Committee chaired by the Cabinet Secretary and the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) / Committee on Non Plan Expenditure (CNE).

In News: Addressing the meeting of the BRICS Business Forum, Prime Minister said the digital transformation unfolding in India has never before been seen on the world stage

• India’s digital economy and the infrastructure sector has a total potential for $2.5 trillion
• There are more than 100 unicorns in over 70,000 start-ups in India , and their number continues to grow.
• The value of the Indian digital economy will reach $1 trillion by 2025

Advantages of a Digital Economy

• Removal of Black Economy: By restricting cash-based transactions and using only digital payments, the government can efficiently expel the black economy.
• Empowerment to People: Direct Benefit Transfer, fight against Corruption
• Creation of new jobs
• Increase in Revenues: Each transaction is recorded, customers will get a bill for their purchase, and the merchants are bound to pay sales tax to the government.
• e-governance: Digital economy will pave a way to e-governance, where delivery of all government services would be done electronically

Measures taken by Government

• Digilockers: it is a “digital locker” service operated by the Government of India that enables Indian citizens to store certain official documents on the cloud.
• Digital Payments: The introduction of Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which introduced the benefits of digital payments in every part of the country.
• BHIM app —It is an app to enable digital payments.
• Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan to make citizen digitally literate.

BRICS summit

• The BRICS summit is being hosted by China as a chair of BRICS this year
• BRICS is an acronym for the grouping of the world’s leading emerging economies , namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
• The BRICS Leaders’ Summit is convened annually.
• The Chairmanship of the forum is rotated annually among the members, in accordance with the acronym B-R-I-C-S
• Together, BRICS accounts for about 40% of the world’s population and about 30% of the GDP
• The first BRIC Summit took place in 2009 in the Russian Federation
• South Africa was invited to join BRIC in December 2010, after which the group adopted the acronym BRICS.
• South Africa subsequently attended the Third BRICS Summit in Sanya, China, in March 2011.

BRICS initiatives

New Development Bank

• During the Sixth BRICS Summit in Fortaleza (2014) the leaders signed the Agreement establishing the New Development Bank (NDB).
• Fortaleza Declaration stressed that the NDB will strengthen cooperation among BRICS and will supplement the efforts of multilateral and regional financial institutions for global development thus contributing to sustainable and balanced growth.
• NDB is headquartered in Shanghai.

Contingent Reserve Arrangement

• Considering the increasing instances of global financial crisis, BRICS nations signed BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA) in 2014 as part of Fortaleza Declaration at Sixth BRICS summit.
• The BRICS CRA aims to provide short-term liquidity support to the members through currency swaps to help mitigating BOP crisis situation and further strengthen financial stability.

The First Step Towards transforming into a Digital India!

Digital India is a massive campaign that the Government of India launched in the year 2015. Creation of Digital Infrastructure  

To be able to deploy various digital services across the country, it is necessary to create a strong digital infrastructure, especially in rural areas of the country. The interior regions of the country either have very little or mostly do not have any electronic network. This is the reason behind establishing a digital network across the country. Bharat Broadband Network Limited, the governmental body that is responsible for the execution of the National Optical Fiber Network project is responsible for the Digital India project as well. Bharat Net aims to connect 2,50,500 gram panchayats across the country to a high-speed internet network via an optical fiber network. 4,00,000 internet points will be established all across the country as part of the program, from which anybody will be able to access the internet. 

Delivery of Digital Service  

A major component of the Digital India campaign is to deliver government services and other essential services digitally. It is easier to change the way of delivering services from physical to digital. Many services of the Government of India were digitized under the Digital India Campaign. 

All ministries would be linked under this scheme, and all departments will be able to reach out to the people with fundamental services like health care, banking, education, scholarships, gas cylinders, water and electricity bills, and judicial services. The daily monetary transactions of people were also converted into digital mode. To ensure transparency in the transactions and curb corruption all the money transactions are being made online, and are supported by one-time passwords. 

Digital Literacy  

For full participation of the people of India, the competency that they need to have is called Digital Literacy. The basic behavior, knowledge, and skills required to effectively use digital devices are mandatory. Desktop PCs, laptops, tablets, and smartphones are the digital devices used for the purpose of communicating, expressing, collaborating, and advocating. The mission of Digital Literacy will be covering over six crore rural households. 

With the Digital India Programme, the Government of India is hoping to achieve all-around growth on multiple fronts collectively. The objective of the Government is to target the nine ‘Pillars of Digital India’ that are identified as follows.

There has been a vast growth in the usage of the internet and technology in the past few years. The Panchkula district in Haryana was awarded the best and top performing district under the Digital India campaign on the 28 th of December 2015.

Agri market App  - It was created to make agricultural prices known to farmers and discourage them from selling too soon. 

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao - Ensuring the welfare and nurturing of a girl child and also making sure that every girl child attends school. 

Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) - It makes payments quickly, easily, and simply through the Unified Payment Interface (UPI). It also allows the bank to accept instant payments and money collections using mobile phone numbers. 

Crop Insurance Mobile App - Used to calculate crop insurance premiums depending on numerous characteristics such as area or loan amount, if a loan is taken out. 

E-Hospital - It's an HMIS (Hospital Management Information System) for hospitals' internal workflows and operations. 

E-Pathshala - The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) created it to make all educational resources, such as books and videos, available online. 

EPFO Web Portal and Mobile App - Allow workers to check the amount of their provident fund using an e-passbook, which is a virtual equivalent of a real passbook. 

Start-up India Portal and Mobile App - It is a government of India program to encourage entrepreneurs to develop businesses (start-ups) in the country to expand sustainably. 

Benefits of Digital India

It makes health care and literacy more accessible since one may use a hospital service to receive online registration, a doctor's appointment, payment of the charge, a diagnostic test, and a blood test, among other things. 

It allows consumers to submit their paperwork and certifications online from anywhere, reducing the amount of physical work required. 

Citizens can digitally sign their records online to sign the framework. 

It benefits the beneficiaries of the National Scholarship Portal by allowing them to submit applications, have them verified, and then be paid or disbursed. 

BSNL's next-generation network will replace 30-year-old telephone exchanges for improved administration of online services on mobile devices like voice, data, multimedia, etc. 

Flexible electronics will be promoted with the support of the National Center for Flexible Electronics. 

As all transactions are completed through the digital method, it also aids in the reduction of black marketing.

India will provide soft skills, education, and health through it to turn its demographic into human capital. It will benefit both India as well as Africa. Not only boosts the economy in current times but also transcends to the coming generation with better human capital.

Challenges of the Digital Economy

One of the biggest challenges of the digital economy highlighted in the World Development Report of UNDP is the creation of social inequalities. India the fastest growing economy has internet access to only 20 crore people out of 130 crores. In rural India, only 9% of people have internet access. If we talk about high-speed internet it is less than one percent even in urban areas.

At the next level, digital illiteracy is a challenge that further makes inequality between the haves and the haves not. Rather than building social equality, it can pave the way for monopoly in the economy, which is why social inequality. At present, India has only 42 % of people have digital literacy, which is just about doing basic work on a computer or on other ICT devices. Big companies, which have deep pockets are using digital platforms with predatory pricing. For instance, Samsung dealers sell products on Flipkart and Amazon for less than cost making. These monopolistic trends can further disturb the social fabric of society.

Recently, digital currency like Bitcoin came into the picture to boost the digital economy. It has become an avenue for terrorist activities, which is again a threat to a peaceful society. Digital platforms have become a bane rather than a bone. Women trafficking through a digital platform and bidding across borders is growing day by day. CRY(Child Rights and You), a non-government organization, shows its concern in its annual report. Which, with the advent of the digitalization of the economy, child trafficking has increased from 4 children per day in metro cities to 16 children per day (a 400% increase).

The steps were taken toward Digital Economy in India

Apprehension related to trafficking and economic inequalities transcending to social inequalities is a wearing trend. But, we need to understand digitalization or ICT platforms are just a tool. For effective utilization, we need to work towards various measures. For instance, the Government of India plans “Bharat net” to connect all the village panchayats. Similarly, the government introduced free Wi-Fi in public places like Railways to improve internet access. Moreover, World Bank is funding projects across the world to improve internet accessibility.

Further, to empower people, the Government came up with “Adhar Pay” in which people can transact without an internet connection. It will not only boost the economy but also empower the most deprived section of society. In schools, computer education is made compulsory. Further, the “Skill India Program” is also Introduced.

To check monopolies, the government has also come up with a digital India program that not only provides a platform for selling goods and services but also makes farmers aware to improve their productivity.

To further strengthen the digital economy and check the misuse of the Cyber platform, WTO decided on various faults and form a committee with the collaboration of the representatives of different nations. Moreover, digital challenges are bound to come. So, we need to upgrade the capability of security forces to check the misuse of cyber technology. To fight all the corrupt practices and remove them from root and shoot, ethics and morality are panaceas to build a just society. Which is socially inclusive, economically inclusive, and environmentally sustainable. Indeed, the digital economy can benefit society in achieving these goals in the coming future.

Through the government body of electronic network the execution of broadband connection has been completed in the entire country. Now people from any part of India can access internet based upon their needs. With the extensive network and improved connection people have become able to use digital mode of economic services like payments, selling and buying in major sectors. Through digital India program citizens have got all government services in digital platforms. Now, the transformation from physical to digital mode has become easier with the medium digital economy. All ministries of the government are linked under digital India program where people will find all departments for various services according to their needs. People can get all services like banking, electricity bills, cylinders, healthcare, education, water and judicial services through digital India initiative. All the monetary transactions are converted into digital mode where people do not need to go in specific departments and spend their valuable time. To ensure transparency in digital mode payment and stop the corruption during transaction the whole system is completed by one time password. So, we all should adopt the developed measure as a sign of our own improvement and bring India one step ahead towards development through economy.

Major initiatives:

Besides Indian citizens, government officials the digital economy has been supported in the whole world largely. The renowned technology giants all over the world like Microsoft, google, apple, Facebook etc. have supported the initiative. Like google promised to increase the broadband connectivity into 500000 villages within the country. Microsoft has taken steps for making India its cloud hub through the Indian data centres. Oracle has also planned to invest in 20 states for working with smart city initiatives and payments. Various mobile apps and websites like mygov.in, UMANG, agri market app, BHIM, crop insurance, EPFO, start up India portal have been develop for increasing digital transactions, business and solving queries related to economic services. The government of India has converted UPI into all digital payments system through its significant technology interface for providing people complete assurance about digital payments. People can use one common UPI for paying through all digital transaction options. Banking sector has also upgraded all facilities like mobile banking, internet banking etc. for which customers now do not need to go their official bank branches. They can overview their all banking operations through online mode and can manage all operations via online mode only. We can easily book tickets, doctor’s appointments, bill payments, buy groceries, medicines, withdraw salary or pension, sell property through online mode. With the extensive structure of digital mode in overall economy of the country has given greater impact to develop it larger level over the past few years. As a responsible citizen we should use digital economy more in our living for enhancing the economy of the country.

Benefits for empowering India:

Digital economy has made healthcare sector more accessible now as one can check availability of doctors, book appointments, payment fees, diagnostic tests, online registration to hospitals and detail treatment plan. Education has become easier for candidates as they can check top institutions, its charges, offering courses and detain admission schedule through official websites. Consumers can buy anything from online shopping portals whenever and wherever they need. They can pay through UPI and do not need to worry about having cash. All the financial transactions have become possible through digital payment modes where citizens do not need to worry about fraudulent and black marketing in services. The initiative digital economy has brought revolution of change in Indian economy over various cities, villages and even remote areas. Digital economy has been proved such a big initiative for transforming India into a digital empowered country. Various schemes like e-health, e-education, digital locker, internet banking, e-sign, and national scholarship portal have been started based upon digital economy. Both the consumers and service providers have been benefitted through digital economy as the design of the initiative is made like this way. Consumers feel confused before for paying through UPI as there are several digital payment options. After fixing one UPI for one consumer the digital payment option has become easier and they have started adopting digital payments more.

It aims to provide easy online government services to the citizens of India and improve the technical aspect of India by empowering the Internet in the country.

Improving digital infrastructure, providing services in digital form, and digital literacy are the three major aspects of this campaign. Though there are many challenges in rural areas such as a lack of digital literacy, internet connectivity, and digital infrastructure, efforts are being made by the government in the region through programs like National Digital Literacy Mission, and Bharat Net to make the citizens make life better.

Digital India Programme Structure

Digital India Campaign comprises various initiatives under a single program, each aimed at preparing India to become a knowledge economy and bringing good governance to the citizens through the synchronized engagement of the entire government.

The Campaign is designed and coordinated by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) in collaboration with various central ministries & departments and state governments. The Chairman of the Monitoring Committee on Digital India is the Prime Minister of India.

The vision of the Digital India Programme

The program was launched with the objective of transforming India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge-based economy. There are three major areas focused on under this program:-

• Development of secure and stable Digital Infrastructure

With the launch of this campaign, the Government of India aims to have internet connectivity across the country which is reliable. This will be beneficial for the country not only in terms of technology but also for security and educational purposes. It focuses on providing sustainable digital infrastructure and easy access to online services.

• Governance and Service on Demand

The various services launched by the government for the benefit of the common man of the country rarely reach those who really need them. With this program, the government also focuses on providing all such services digitally to its citizens. This will encourage and motivate people to do more and more online/electronic transactions which will be easier and will help India to be cashless.

• Universal Digital Literacy

With this program, people will get to know more and more about online services like making payments or submitting documents online. This will provide digital empowerment of citizens and make their lives easier, faster, and more comfortable. Digital empowerment of citizens means providing digital literacy to all citizens and providing facilities for citizens to submit government documents digitally.

• The BPO policy has been approved to make BPO centers in various North-Eastern states and small towns of other states.

Result of the Digital India Programme

Today India has become a center of innovation.  Digital identity has been made available to about 99% of the population of India due to Aadhaar.  Due to digital locker, e-Sign, digital payment, etc, people are getting government service available on their phones at home, due to which they do not have to travel to different government offices i.e. saving both time and energy.

The digital economy is making the life of common people simple, as well as it is giving strength to the Indian economy because the adoption of the digital economy has given a boost to employment generation.

Important Projects of the Digital India Programme

• MyGov (Mobile App or Website Portal): It provides a digital platform where citizens share their views about government programs and schemes. It also encourages people from abroad to participate in various activities.

In 2015, India’s government initiated a massive “Digital India” initiative. Digital India’s mission is to make the country a digitally empowered society and a knowledge economy. It guarantees the online access of government services to the citizens. Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated this program on 2 July 2015. The program includes plans to link rural areas to interim high-speed networks and to boost digital literacy. The campaign significantly increased the use of electronic services and products. The project is run by a Government body called Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL). In the 2018 phase, this program was implemented.

This project, with active participation from the Ministry of Information Technology (IT), Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Human resource development and Ministry of Health, has been organized by the Information Technology Department (DITI). The program has received acclaim from various places from the day of its launch and played a significant role in transforming India’s digital infrastructure. It will catalyse investment in the IT field, thereby creating employment.

Objectives of Digital India

The program Digital India concentrates its main areas of vision, operation and value on the demand for digital technology empowerment, for every individual, administration and people. The massive campaign is divided into three parts, aiming for the following goals:

• A safe and efficient digital network that would connect every part of the country
• Facilitated access to online government services(e-Governance)
• Digital literacy of the masses

Instead of a digital India viewpoint, the government aims to provide every citizen with high-speed internet connectivity as a resource that provides fast public service delivery through the online platform and promotes digital literacy among the population. The goal of the program is to link cities, towns and villages of India with high-speed broadband, with network and data centres called the National Information Centre.

Digital India e-Governance

Digital India has provided a significant number of government services. Some are as follows:

• Mygov.in: A forum where people exchange insights and ideas about the policy and governance of administration in general. It is done in order for people to engage fully in the process.
• Digital Attendance: The initiative was launched in Delhi to record the participation of public employees and used a biometric system in order to mark the participation of employees.
• UMANG:  It is an app for all mobile platforms. The application is available in various Indian languages, allowing visitors to access tax facilities, train ticket reservations, educational portals, digital lockers and biometric identification systems, known as Aadhaar.
• e-Hospital: This application provides access to different hospital services like online laboratory reports, a payment gateway, booking appointments etc.
• e-Sign: This is a program that enables registered people to authenticate a document digitally with the help of their Aadhaar cards.
• Digi-Locker: A digital locker enables citizens to store all their government documents digitally. It is a multi-platform application developed to work in different administrative branches. Because the government itself authenticates the records, no physical copy has to be carried by people.

Advantages of Digital India Programme

• Curb of Corruption: Because of online work, the dishonest can be easily curbed because it takes place before everyone so that the job can be done in the right way.
• Time Saving: Through the digital project, people can work easily and quickly. The work done in offices in hours can be done in a couple of minutes.
• Rapid Development of Villages: The Digital India Project is in a position to change the country’s nature. If the initiative is given smooth and necessary importance in the villages, then it will not take long for that village to become a city.
• Employment Opportunities: All employment opportunities and information are available on the internet. Most government portals will then be launched following the Digital India Project and offer more opportunities.
• eBasta Portal : In this context, students will be provided with study information. This portal will make books, essential notes and materials available.

Impact of the Digital India Project

Digital India has a profound impact on people from all walks of life. The campaign has a profound effect on the whole life of the individual and contributed to the growth of society as a whole. Under Digital India, there are hundreds of programs. One plan is to create 28,000 BPO jobs across the country and create a Common Service Centre in all Gram Panchayats. It will also allow the government to generate thousands of IT jobs as Digital India needs people to help develop the infrastructure and bring the digital revolution to the new generation of young people.

So- far, over 250,000 villages have been linked in Digital India across the country. Every village now has connectivity to high-speed internet, provided by a government-owned BBNL telecom, to high-speed internet. The Government of India has also taken 11 technical steps to improve digital payment volume by promoting multiple payment channels such as PhonePe. The RuPay platform, an Indian company, competing with MasterCard and Visa, is also promoted.

India, the largest democracy in the world, faces the issue of financial illiteracy. When it comes to money matters, what you don’t know can hurt you a lot. India is predicted to be the fastest-growing economy for the next decade. In a country like this, a whopping 83.3% of the population is not financially literate. Alternatively in one other survey, 83% of the American population feels that schools should teach high school students Financial Literacy Coursework.

The Finance Minister of India recently stated that Financial Literacy should be taught at the school level. If we don’t teach people financial literacy, they will not suddenly stop interacting with money. They’ll do it themselves, and the vast majority will lose money. Instead of applying financial reasoning, we’ll apply the logic from Reddit; instead of technical analysis, we’ll analyze tweets of financial influencers. We’ll invest in crypto because of a star-studded FTX Superbowl commercial, and the cost of financial illiteracy will rise. 32% of teens still don’t know the difference between a credit card and a debit card and 11% of Americans with bank accounts paid overdraft fees in 2021. Think of the 2008 financial crisis when people couldn’t engage in appropriate mortgages  — that had consequences beyond personal finances.

Several instances underscore the negative consequences of the public's poor financial choices, stemming from a lack of financial literacy. For example, a game show winner lost INR 50 million ($600,000) due to mismanagement, an educated individual faced financial distress and took their life after accruing debt from a loan and stock market losses, and an actor resorted to menial jobs after depleting savings from unemployment. These cases emphasize the crucial need for financial education, which is currently absent from our curriculum.

Financial literacy has devolved into a massive, generational game of telephone; if children don’t learn about budgeting, saving, credit, and investing from their parents, they never do. Financial literacy has become a double-edged sword for generational wealth: it benefits those with it and disproportionately hurts those without it. 

In summary, financial illiteracy in India poses significant risks, with a vast majority lacking crucial financial knowledge.
