CIMA's CGMA® Operational Level

The first level of CIMA's CGMA® Professional Qualification, we work closely with CIMA to align our teaching to the qualification and assessments. CGMA Operational level papers

The CGMA Operational level requires you to complete three Objective Test exams subjects and a Case Study exam. You can only attempt the Case Study exam, which tests your knowledge of the level, once you have passed all three Objective Test exams. Successful completion of the tests and case study allows you to progress onto the CGMA Management level.

Entry requirements and exemptions

There are no formal entry requirements to start your CGMA journey, but learners are expected to have a good level of mathematics and English language in order to succeed.  

If you have no relevant degree or other accounting credentials, the  CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting (Cert BA)  will be a good starting point. You might also gain some exemptions if you have completed the final level of  AAT  or equivalent. To find out more, use the  CIMA exemptions calculator . 

Booking your CGMA exam

Choose the exam to suit you by booking directly with CIMA. You will pay directly to the institute for your exam sitting.

Entry requirements

To gain entry to the Operational Case Study exam you must have passed E1, P1 and F1 or have been awarded the relevant exemptions to allow you to write the Operational Case Study exam.

How it Works

Online Classes for Case Study exams start 10 weeks prior to your exam sitting (i.e. end Nov for Feb sitting). Our Online Classes are led by a UK tutor and attended by students globally. You and your classmates will work your way through a series of video lectures and practice tasks before tackling the pre-seen analysis and mock exams. You will also find transition content (for students stepping over from a previous syllabus) and gap content (OT study material to ensure there are no knowledge gaps). Video lectures are recordings of BPP's top lecturers and can be downloaded to your mobile phone and played offline.

You can access the resources up to 2 weeks prior to the start date and use the time to browse around and explore the online platform. The start date is the date the tutor joins and when your assessment submission schedule kicks in. You will have access to your tutor, your classmates and your online resources for 6 months from the course start date or up to your exam date for sitting-based exams. All material is included.

Each level of the CIMA Professional Qualification culminates in a Case Study Examination, which integrates the knowledge, skills and techniques from across the three pillars into one synoptic capstone examination.

At the Operational level, the role simulated is that of an entry level finance professional and the capstone Case Study Examination provides a simulated context, which allows candidates to demonstrate that they have acquired the required knowledge, skills, techniques and mindset for that role.

Exams and sittings

Each case study exam is a three hour long computer based exam. There are four windows a year when you can sit your case study exams (February, May, August and November). Within each window, exams will be available for three days from Wednesday to Friday. Exams can be sat at a Pearson Vue exam centre or at home. Information about a fictitious company is released 7 weeks prior to the exam, which forms the basis of your Case Study exam and is called the 'pre-seen material'.

Home Study and Home Study (eBooks) - OT/CertBA

To qualify: To qualify for our Pass Assured Promise, you need to have submitted all five progress tests and achieve 50% or higher on your mock exam, and have attempted your final exam within 3 months of having received your study material.

Our promise: You receive 3 additional months of tutor support and you can submit progress tests and mock exams to your tutor for marking.

Special note: You will not receive any new study material for your subject. 

Home Study Plus and Home Study Plus (eBooks) - OT/CertBA

To qualify: To qualify for our Pass Assured Promise, you need to have submitted all five progress tests on the BPP HUB and achieve 50% or higher on your mock exam, and have attempted your final exam within 3 months of having received your study material.

Our promise: Re-activation of your Online Portal access, as well as tutor support to re-write your exam.

Campus, Virtual Classes or Virtual Classes (eBooks) - OT/CertBA

To qualify: To qualify for our Pass Assured Promise, you need to have a 90% classes attendance, you need to have submitted all five progress tests and achieve 50% or higher on your mock exam, and have attempted your final exam within 3 weeks of your last class date.

Our promise: You can come back to classes for that subject for free in the following study period.

Special note: You will not receive any new study material for your subject.

Home Study and Home Study (eBooks) - Case Study

To qualify: To qualify for our Pass Assured Promise, you need to have submitted one practice mock exam for marking and feedback with a 40% pass rate or higher. You also need to have sat the exam relevant to your sitting (i.e. May CS)

Our promise: You receive 3 additional months of tutor support and you can submit tasks and mock exams to your tutor for marking.

Special note: Should the pre-seen differ, you will receive a new printed toolkit but you will not receive a new workbook.

Home Study Plus and Home Study Plus (eBooks) - Case Study

Campus, Virtual Classes or Virtual Classes (eBooks) - Case Study Classes

To qualify: To qualify for our Pass Assured Promise, you need to have attended 100% of the classes (usually 4/4) and write the two additional mock exams with a 40% pass rate or higher. You also need to have sat the exam relevant to your sitting (i.e. May CS)

Our promise: You can attend the case study classes for the following exam sitting (i.e. Aug CS).

Online Courses - CertBA

To qualify for our Pass Assured Promise, you must complete and submit steps 1 to 6 of the Achievement Ladder by the relevant submission dates and score at least 50% on each step, before you sit your CBA which must take place within 3 weeks of the official course completion date (refer to the Online Course timetable's 'finish date').

Our promise: If you are unsuccessful in your exam, you may book and commence a free online course within 3 months of having taken the relevant exam.

Special note: You will not receive any new study material for your subject.

Online Courses - OT

To qualify for our Pass Assured Promise, must complete and submit steps 1 to 6 of the Achievement Ladder by the relevant submission dates and score at least 70% on each step, before they sit their OT exam which must take place within 3 weeks of the official course completion date (refer to the OCR timetable 'finish date').

Online Courses - Case Study

To qualify for our Pass Assured Promise, must complete and submit steps 1 to 5 of the Achievement Ladder by the relevant submission dates and score at least 40% on each step. You also need to have sat the exam relevant to your sitting (i.e. May CS).

Our promise: If you are unsuccessful in your exam, you may book and commence a free online course for the very next Case Study sitting (i.e. Aug CS).

Hi, I am now preparing for my operational case study. I was wondering what study materials anyone used. I am swaying towards the astranti 7 exam papers and possible the kaplan publishing case study book. Now sure if the case study book is worth it or not. Any other suggestions?

Hi, I’m studying through BPP and will consider buying the CIMA case study book directly too. I have used the aptitude tests from CIMA for objective tests, however not sure if these are available for a Case Study.
