You can start by fixing any leaks in your house, taking shorter showers, and not letting the tap run while brushing your teeth or washing dishes.

In conclusion, let’s pledge to save every drop of water. It is a precious resource, and once lost, cannot be recovered. Remember – every effort counts, no matter how small. Despite knowing the importance of water, we often take it for granted.

Why is it, then, that we are facing a water crisis? The answer is simple: unsustainable use and wasteful habits. We, as humans, have been exploiting this resource without giving a thought to the consequences. We let the tap run while we brush our teeth, we water our lawns excessively, and we ignore leaky faucets. This carelessness, coupled with the impact of climate change, has led to the dire situation we now face.

So, what can we do to save water? The solution is in our hands. We need to adopt a more conscious approach towards water usage. Turn off the tap when not in use, repair leaky faucets promptly, use water-saving appliances, and practice rainwater harvesting. These are simple, yet effective ways to conserve water in our daily lives.

Need to Conserve Water

Conservation of water is an urgent issue which the modern world is facing right now. As there has been an increase in the consumption of water, the need to conserve it arises even more. In other words, we need to come up with strategies and activities that will help conserve water.

To begin with, water conservation is important for future generations. Moreover, it will also help in reducing the level of used energy. Most importantly, as water is home to millions of aquatic animals and plants, we need to save it to save aquatic life.

Firstly, we must all become more economical with our use of water. That means we must regulate how we use it and in what amount while performing daily tasks. For instance, we can opt for low-flow shower heads and toilets, automatic faucets, and similar smart devices which aim to conserve water.

Similarly, we can do our bit by not keeping the water running when brushing our teeth. Further, we must also avoid showers and use a bucket instead to bathe. Similarly, we must all fix and leaking taps or more to avoid wastage of water.

Apart from that, we also have the issue of water pollution. So, we must take measures to curb that as well. The government must regulate the industries which emit their industrial waste in water bodies, making it unfit for use and aquatic life.

To sum it up, humans can survive without almost anything but water. As any other resource gets exhausted, we may be able to prevent the negative impact of it. However, if we consume all or pollute all the water, the damage will be irreversible.

Life on earth without water is impossible.

On one side, man is exploiting, polluting, and wasting drinkable water. On the other side man is spending billions of dollars seeking signs of water in other planets . Pitiable, to say the least!

Water, I believe, is one of God’s priceless gifts to mankind. In the past civilizations and cultures took shape in the banks of rivers in acknowledgement of this fact.

Today, the post-modern culture revolves around bottled water. In this we see a loss of goodness that once was seen in offering a stranger a cup of cold water to drink as he walked by our homes.

Those of us who have constant access to fresh water resources should pause a moment and think about millions who do not enjoy this privilege. In fact, there are many, especially women and children who die for the lack of safe drinking water.

Now just thinking won’t do much good. We need action. In this case, we need practical steps to preserve our water resources for our children.

Think about it. How can the next generation survive if after having the best education and highly skilled jobs they don’t have water to drink? The simplest thing you can do is to see that your taps don’t leak or drip. Once you are about to leave home ensure that all taps are closed.

Then explore the possibility of taking a shorter bath, consider reusing water from the kitchen for gardening, or using stored water in a bucket to wash dishes instead of running water.

There are several more of these practical tips. It is not creativity that is lacking to implement them; instead it is the will to do so. Remember the saying “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Perhaps there is no better way to end these thoughts than to quote what the missile man of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam predicted, “ Future wars will be over water.”

With atomic, nuclear, chemical and biological weapons kept ready for the need and the hour, another world war would contaminate what little safe water that remains. Let us therefore unite to save water to save lives!

Before I conclude, let me remind you that water quenches thirst. It satisfies. Especially after having walked in the hot sun, how refreshing a splash of water onto one’s face and drink of cold water. Therefore water is a powerful symbol of the longing of man for truth, for God, for the meaning of life and for all that ultimately satisfies.

Of the remaining 3%, two percent are in the form of glaciers and polar ice caps, and only 1 percent of water is available for drinking! Given the massive increase in world population and water needs, this water will soon dry up, if appropriate measures are taken to conserve water.

It is very frustrating to notice that we are increasingly misusing water for our multi-purpose use. Water is also misused in homes, industries, and agriculture : water conservation collective habit and national motto. So, before we talk about water-saving steps, let’s list the areas where we are using water.

  • For everyday chores in homes
  • In schools, hospitals, and offices
  • In farming with old practices and water use habits
  • In amusement parks, restaurants, malls, etc.

Dear all! As we have said, here are the places where water is abused in daily life. However, we must take note of how to properly manage water use in our daily routine. Here are some of the techniques that can be worked out on a personal and collective level.

Good morning to the excellencies, respected teachers and my dear colleagues. I would like to speech on a very important topic “save water” today at this special occasion. As well all know that how the water is important for the continuation of life on the earth.

It is the most basic need of everyone (human being, animal, plant and other microorganisms). Water is the unique source of life, without water we cannot imagine the life here. Life on other planets is not possible just because of the absence of water. It is considered as the most important among other known celestial bodies.

Almost three-fourth area of the earth is covered by the water and it constitutes around 60-70 % of the living world. It seems that water is endless renewable source on the earth because it is regenerated and redistributed all over the earth through evaporation and rain. It arises a question in our mind that if water is renewable source then why we should worry for water and try to conserve it.

Save Water

Actually, there is only 1% of the water on the earth which is usable to us. And other water bodies have unusable water to us such as 97% salty sea water, 2% water in the form of glaciers and polar ice caps. Only 1% water is here for us over which a huge population all over the world is depended for the survival. Death is more possible in the lack of water than the lack of food. It again arises a question in our mind that why we are so late in realizing the need of water saving and conservation.

Since the life of each and every living things on the earth depends on water, then scenario will get worse if useful water become dirty or started reducing. A water looking fresh and drinkable from outside can be mixed with the harmful and toxic elements through various sources like industries, factories, sewer, etc and cause illness and death if ingested by animals, plants or human beings. Here are some tips which really will help us to save water:

  • Parents should aware their children about the need of water conservation. They should avoid buying recreational water toys (which require constant stream of water) to their children.
  • Everyone should be aware of the water shortage rules and restrictions and strictly follow in their own area.
  • Every employee should be active for the water conservation at their own work place and encourage their employer to promote water conservation in other effective ways.
  • There should be water conservation awareness and tips for every starter in the orientation manual and training program at schools, colleges, work place, offices, institutions, etc.
  • Water conservation techniques should be promoted on every news media such as TV, newspaper, radio, FM, community newsletters, bulletin boards, banners, etc.
  • People should be more active in their area to report (to their owner, local authorities, water management of district) any problems related to water loss through broken pipes, errant sprinklers, open hydrants, abandoned free-flowing wells, etc.
  • Water conservation awareness should be highly developed and promoted especially in the schools to aware children means future of the nation.
  • School students should be assigned to prepare projects on water conservation or given this topic during any competition like debate, discussion, essay writing or speech recitation.

A very good morning to the respected teachers, my dear friends and other gathered people here. As we are here to celebrate this occasion, I would like to speech on the topic of save water. Now-a-days, lack of useful water in our surrounding areas is the most serious topic which needs to be working out urgently. Three-fourth of the earth surface is covered by the water however there is lack of drinking water on the earth (only 1%).

The level of drinking water on the earth is getting down and dirty because of various industrial sources day by day. It is very serious matter that we are losing the useful water on the earth. Each human body consists of 75% water which make clear that how the water is important for us as a prime elements and responsible for life on the earth. Water circulates itself in the universe through the process of evaporation and rain.

A well developed human body contains an average of 42 liters of water however suffers dehydration at a very small loss of 2.7 liters. He/she starts feeling weak, irritable, fatigue, dizziness, nervousness, headaches, etc. We all should improve the habit of water saving and conservation in our home and outside. Here are some points which can help us in save water outside the doors:

  • We should use water according to the need and requirement and never over-water our lawn they need watering every 5 to 7 days (summer season), every 10 to 14 days (winter season) and almost not in the rainy season.
  • We should water the lawns especially in the early morning or late evening because due to the low temperature and low wind speed it can not be lost through evaporation and totally used by the plants.
  • We should not water the streets, driveways or sidewalks, all are wastage of water.
  • We should use water-efficient methods of irrigation (micro and drip irrigation, soaker hoses, etc) while sprinkling over plants or other place.
  • If a lawn cut higher, it encourages roots of the plants go deeper and holds more soil moisture thus require less water from outside.
  • We should never fertilizes (or only sometimes according to need) our lawns because it increases the need of more water.
  • Sprinklers or hoses can not be left unattended as they may loss approximately 600 gallons of water in few hours.
  • Car washing should be done on the green ground or lawn otherwise prefer commercial car wash as they recycles water.
  • We should avoid ornamental water features like fountains in the lawn as show piece.
  • There should be filter system in the individual swimming pools.
  • Mulching technique also helps plants to retain soil moisture for long time.
  • We should try to plant some native and drought resistant plants, grasses, ground covers and shrubs in the lawns as they do not need more water to survive.
  • There should not be any leakage in the water pipes in the home and in case of leakage, hose washers can be used between spigots and water hoses.

Good morning to the excellencies, my respected teachers and my dear colleagues. I would like to speech on the topic of save water today while celebrating such a nice occasion. Hope you all would help me and let me fulfill the objectives of my speech. As we all know the importance of water in our life. Water involves in almost all the processes in our body such as digestion, elimination, assimilation, respiration, maintaining body temperature, etc. It is required to remove the thirst of our body.

We can live for days without food however cannot imagine to live without water more than a day. The level of useful drinking water (only 1%) on the earth is very less and other water is salty and not useful to the living beings. Water is required by everything like plants, animals, microorganisms, human being, etc to fulfill the body requirements. Do we imagine that what will happen if the drinking water get finished a day or get polluted. Yes, it is the main question which has opened the eyes of everyone and start saving water at every place we belong like home, surrounding area, office, school, college, etc.

We have to save and conserve our drinking water from extra spend as well as being polluted by following various techniques of water conservation. Now-a-days, in the world of technological improvement and industrialization, the safe water is getting polluted to a huge level on daily basis by getting mixed with hundreds of tons of toxins and impurities (as industrial wastes). There are many water treatments used to make dirty water clean and bacteriologically safe however many times they have been proved ineffective because of the presence of certain pathogenic bacteria (giardia and cryptosporidium) after test.

Sometimes the presence of toxic chemicals and inorganic minerals are also found causing various diseases. In order to be safe from the diseases, a mass of people has started drinking mineral water. If we regularly destroy and soiled our drinking water, surely there would be a day soon when we get pure water (labeled as oxygen enriched, free toxic materials, radioactive and chemical compounds). Here are some points helping how to better save drinking water:

  • We should not waste water by draining it without purpose. All the taps should be closed properly to avoid unnecessary water drainage.
  • Do not waste water by irrigating lawns unnecessarily. Lawn needs water every 5 to 7 days in the summer whereas every 10 to 14 days in winter.
  • People should verify that home is leak-free while buying home.
  • All the dripping taps should be repaired soon through replacing washers as they may loss around 2,700 gallons of water per year.
  • Toilet tank leaks should be checked time to time by using food coloring to the tank (if there is leakage it would appear within few min).
  • Never flush toilet or use showers for long time unnecessarily because there may be huge water loss.
  • People should use only required amount of water bathing or washing clothes.
  • Do not destroy water while washing hands, brushing teeth or washing face on the basin, it is good to use mug water or keep close the tap while rubbing hands with soap, cleaning teeth or washing face.
  • Automatic dishwashers and clothes washers should be operated only when fully loaded in order to save water.
  • Everyone should store drinking water for long time in the big container instead of using tap run every time.

I would like to say thanks to my class teacher to give such a great opportunity at this day to speech over an important topic. Water conservation is the technique to save clean and pure water for the future use by following various effective measures. Managing fresh water as a sustainable resource requires various strategies and activities in order to protect life by meeting all the water demands.

Reducing the level of fresh drinking water is very serious issue for this huge worldwide population and increasing need of people for water especially in the manufacturing and agricultural irrigation. Water conservation is necessary to fulfills the goal of future generations. It reduces the use of energy because water management require around 15% of the total electricity consumption. It also involve in the habitat conservation for the local wildlife and migrating waterfowl. It reduces need of building other dams or water diversion infrastructures.

In order to conserve fresh drinking water we need to reduce water loss, avoid damaging natural water quality and improve water management practices. There are many water conservation programs run by the government in order to solve the social problems related to water at the local level (municipal water utilities or regional governments). Some common strategies are like public outreach campaigns, reduce outdoor water use, etc.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it is estimated that if water metering is done to everyone it will reduce water consumption by 20 to 40 %. Water metering is also necessary to raise awareness among public that metering will surely identify and localize the water leakage anywhere. This is the effective using which water department can easily monitor water usage by every family in the society. There should be less water consumed by the people in various water consuming appliances in the home like toilet flush, showers, sprinklers, fountains, washing machine, dish washers, etc.

There should be water-saving technology in the home appliances like low-flow shower heads (also called energy-efficient shower heads), low-flush toilets, composting toilets, dual flush toilets (uses almost 67% less water than the conventional toilets), faucet aerators, raw water flushing (toilets using sea water or non-purified water), water reuse or recycling of water, rainwater harvesting, clothe washers with high-efficiency, weather-based irrigation controllers, garden hose nozzles, low flow taps everywhere, covered swimming pool to reduce water evaporation, automatic faucet, water less urinals, water less car washing, etc reduces water consumption to a great extent and can save more water if used on daily basis in all houses. Agricultural appliances used by the farmers should also be of water-saving technology to reduce water consumption while irrigating crops.

The number of natural disasters like hurricanes, cyclones, droughts, floods, etc., has risen steadily since the onset of the 21st century. The supervillain behind all these changes is Global Warming. The name is quite self-explanatory; it means the rise in the temperature of the Earth. Since childhood, we all have heard about it, but just as a formality, let us first understand what global warming is!

This affected the wildlife, animals, humans, and every living organism on earth. Glaciers have been melting, and many countries have started water shortages, flooding, erosion and all this is because of global warming. No one can be blamed for global warming except for humans. Human activities such as gases released from power plants, transportation, and deforestation have resulted in the increase of gases such as carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants in the earth’s atmosphere. The main question is how can we control the current situation and build a better world for future generations. It starts with little steps by every individual. Start using cloth bags made from sustainable materials for all shopping purposes, instead of using the high-watt lights use the energy-efficient bulbs, switch off the electricity, don’t waste water, abolish deforestation and encourage planting more trees. Shift the use of energy from petroleum or other fossil fuels to wind and solar energy. Instead of throwing out the old clothes donate them to someone so that it is recycled. Donate old books, don’t waste paper.  Above all, spread awareness about global warming. Every little thing a person does towards saving the earth will contribute in big or small amounts. We must learn that 1% effort is better than no effort. Pledge to take care of Mother Nature and speak up about global warming.

Global warming isn’t a prediction, it is happening! A person denying it or unaware of it is in the most simple terms complicit. Do we have another planet to live on? The sea level is increasing by 0.12 inches per year worldwide. This is happening because of the melting of polar ice caps because of global warming. This has increased the frequency of floods in many lowland areas and has caused damage to coral reefs. The Arctic is one of the worst-hit areas affected by global warming. Air quality has been adversely affected and the acidity of the seawater has also increased causing severe damage to marine life forms. Severe natural disasters are brought about by global warming which has had dire effects on life and property. As long as mankind produces greenhouse gases, global warming will continue to accelerate. The consequences are felt at a much smaller scale which will increase to become drastic shortly. The power to save the day lies in the hands of humans, the need is to seize the day. Energy consumption should be reduced on an individual basis. Fuel-efficient cars and other electronics should be encouraged to reduce the wastage of energy sources. This will also improve air quality and reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Global warming is an evil which can only be defeated when fought together. It is better late than never. If we take steps today, we will have a much brighter future tomorrow. Global warming is the bane of our existence and various policies have come up worldwide to fight it but that is not enough. The actual difference is made when we work at an individual level to fight it. Understanding its importance now is crucial before it becomes an irrevocable mistake. Exterminating global warming is of utmost importance and everyone is as responsible for it as the next.  

Students in grades 1-3 can benefit from this kind of speech since it gives them a clear understanding of the issue in an accessible manner.

  • Although global warming is not a new occurrence and has been a worry since before civilization, the danger is only getting worse over time.
  • The average global temperature is rising as a result of pollution and damage to the natural systems that control the climate, including the air, water, and land.
  • Population growth and people’s desire to live comfortably are the main causes of pollution.
  • The primary sources include carbon emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels, factories, cars, trains, and other transportation, as well as from the coal industry.
  • When these dangerous pollutants are discharged into the atmosphere, protective layers like ozone begin to erode, allowing dangerous solar rays to enter the atmosphere and causing a temperature rise.
  • Because of the disastrous consequences of global warming, the threat has increased.
  • This causes unnatural effects like the melting of glaciers, the rise in sea level, hurricanes, droughts, and floods, which alters the climate and upsets everything.
  • Changes in rainfall patterns have only made agricultural lands and hence the vegetation worse.
  • Using renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind, for power and other requirements can help us slow down the effects of climate change.
  • To protect the environment and our natural resources, we must begin living sustainably.

  • Industrial Activities : Industrial Activities lead to the vast usage of fossil fuels for the production of energy. These fossil fuels release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which leads to global warming. This energy is used for heat and electricity, transportation, industrial activities, agriculture, oil and gas production, etc.
  • Agricultural Activities : The activity which provides every living thing with food is the one that leads to climate change, i.e., global warming. Agricultural activities use harmful commercial fertilizers that reap nitrous oxide, the most potent greenhouse gas. Methane is the other potent greenhouse gas that comes from the decomposition of waste, burning biomass, digestive systems of livestock, and numerous natural sources.
  • Oil Drilling : Residuals from oil drilling release carbon dioxide. The processing of these fossil fuels and their distribution leads to methane production, a harmful greenhouse gas.
  • Garbage : A recent study shows that 18 per cent of methane gas comes from wastage and its treatment. This methane gas leads to harmful conditions, i.e., global warming.

  • Afforestation : Every individual should take up an oath to plant at least five trees a year. This will lead to an increase in the number of trees, ultimately reducing the overall temperature.
  • Reduce, Reuse and Recycle : We should focus on reducing the use of fossil fuels and other products, which lead to the production of harmful gases. Reusing means repetitive use of a single product. We must focus on reusing products to omit the disposing procedure, which leads to the production of harmful greenhouse gases.   • Reduce Hot Water Use : We should reduce the unnecessary use of hot water that leads to the production of carbon dioxide. A recent study shows that high hot water usage leads to an approximate output of 350 pounds of carbon dioxide.
  • Buy Better Bulbs : It’s observed that traditional bulbs consume more energy as compared to LED bulbs. LED bulbs approximately conserve 80 per cent of the energy that might get wasted using traditional ones. So, one must shift to efficient and energy-conserving bulbs, which will ultimately help reduce global warming.

Warning: do not watch this rousing montage if you have a heart condition..

So way back in April, I first had the idea of editing together inspirational speeches. Since then, the Dow has dropped 3,000 points and one million jobs have been lost. The people of the United States are now a ragtag bunch of scruffy underdogs, down by three touchdowns at halftime, with a whole horde of orcs waiting for us right outside those locker room doors. Inspiration has become something we need . (By the way, you couldn’t tell because it started the sentence, but “Inspiration” was capitalized.)

What I’m trying to say is, I may have just single-handedly saved the economy with this montage:

TRANSCRIPT:

Shame on you. This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you’re going to let it be the worst. And I guarantee a week won’t go by in your life you won’t regret walking out, letting them get the best of you. Well, I’m not going home. We’ve come too far! And I’m going to stay right here and fight for this lost cause. A day may come when the courage of men fails… but it is not THIS day. The line must be drawn HERE. This far, no further! I’m not saying it’s going to be easy. You’re going to work harder than you ever worked before. But that’s fine, we’ll just get tougher with it! Some behind-the-scenes notes for editing nerds only.

  • Obviously, there was some fudging to get it all in one aspect ratio. Some clips were 4:3, so I had to blow them up to fill a 16:9 frame. Other clips were 2.35:1, and I had to blow those up too. You don’t really notice, because you’re watching the finished product in a little box.
  • The music sort of picked itself. A problem I always run into doing these videos is that you can’t just push a button and make a movie’s soundtrack magically disappear. I actually discarded certain clips because they had loud music I couldn’t cover up ( Starship Troopers : “Everyone fights, no one quits.”) But there were two clips I felt like I needed that had really loud music – Animal House and Henry V . So I got those mp3s, synced them up with those two clips, and then dragged the audio out to underscore the entire piece.
  • For a while, I was going to end it with Henry V to ID4 , like this: “… and hold their manhoods cheap, while any speaks who fought with us upon OUR INDEPENDENCE DAY!” But I like going back to Braveheart , because it’s sort of a subtle, subconscious fakeout. The video began with the Braveheart speech, and when William Wallace pops back up, you think it’s going to end there. You don’t expect that last cut to Bill Pullman.
  • I’m grateful to Mr. Stokes, who suggested that I use longer clips at the beginning. At the time I had even more movies packed in there, with more cuts. But Jordan is usually right, and it definitely works better with more of a build.
  • My favorite cut: Chaplin as a Hitler-esque dictator, to George C. Scott as Patton. Not an accident.
  • The clips at the end aren’t exactly in random order. It’s seven shots of characters with arms raised in triumph: the boy from Neverending Story , Rudy, Andy Dufresne, the Grinch, Ferris Bueller, Lincoln, and Rocky.
  • My favorite speech? Animal House , actually. Maybe it’s the positive associations we all have with that movie, or the positive associations we all have with Belushi. But by jingo, it works.

I used to keep an mp3 of that speech on my desktop in college, and when I hit the wall late nights writing a paper or working on a project and couldn’t go any further, I’d play it and recharge.

I remember I played it for the YPMB scriptwriting committee once, I think before we wrote our Harvard script. It seemed to have a pretty powerful effect on everybody.

I haven’t been the annoying feminist in a long while, so here it is: Isn’t it sad that there are only 2.5 women in that video? (The .5 is for Peter Pan.)

What, we’re not allowed to be epic and inspirational? We’re not important enough to make the big, final speeches to rouse up the team or the country or the Ancient Roman armies? Where’s the video for us? Because, I’ll tell you, where would the movie Troy be without Helen? Where would Rocky be without Adrian? Where would Bastian be without that weird princess girl? Where would William Wallace be without that dead wife of his? Where would the president of Independence Day be without that dead wife of HIS?

No. We’re going to fight! We’re gonna live on! Today, my friends, is our Women’s History Month!

I need a name for something. It’s that line that marks where irony and earnestness sort of collide. I can’t be sure how much you intended the earnest side of it, but speaking as someone who has loved and been moved by many of these, I can’t experience it just as irony, and it’s much too smart (Oh my God, Superman with the flag) to experience just as earnest (yes, stating the obvious, sorry). I’m fairly certain that is what you were going for. Good freaking job. For the record, the way I’d refer to that line right now, lacking a name, would be “that space OverthinkingIt occupies most of the time.”

First little gasp/laugh of delight: appearance of Newsies. Another favorite moment: Jimmy Stewart to Return of the King. To Patrick Stewart. Stewart sandwich! (That’s not why, just funny). Keira Knightley, moment I never would’ve remembered, totally working. Maybe that was more inspirational than I realized?

Jesus, this thing is like bottled happiness. And I don’t even want to keep watching it because I hate knowing climactic scenes from movies I haven’t seen (of which there are a few in here). But I can’t stop! So… thanks?

Letting the sentiment go for a second, it never until now occurred to me how heavily the gender balance of these things is skewed (It’s just Keira and Peter Pan on the other side, right? Heh. Half the female representation is Peter Pan). It’s not surprising, I guess–these speeches are generally given by people at the confluence of leader, authority figure and older, experienced one, all of which are categories we’ve usually associated with men. And there is of course the whole “Henry V was a dude, of course it’s a dude” angle. But, you know, interesting.

So, if anyone else cares, how are inspirational speeches gendered, and why? When I think back to “Strong Female Characters,” there have to be some great ass-kicking lines from, say, Aliens and Terminator 2, but in those cases the women were defending very specific things. Is it easier, culturally, to let women stand up for themselves or specific others like their own children, before we let them crusade for ideas like Jimmy Stewart or lead groups of people like Braveheart? Is there a speech in, say, Norma Rae that totally belongs here?

That’s quite enough for a comment, so I’m going to stop myself. Much food for thought, and very good job!

@mlawski Good point. Obviously the fact that most of these movies are sports and historically set war/battle movies means mostly men. Valid point though.

But that makes me realize something along the lines of the already-discussed gender disparity. In the two speeches by men I thought of, the man giving the speech was, in some way, defending a woman. Both women are what I would argue “strong female characters,” yet still are under fire in their movies because of “scandal” and such. Sigh.

Well done Mr Belinke. Perhaps this falls into one of those ‘on shoulders of giants’ categories.

One big reason Hollywood inspirational speeches are gendered is that they appear primarily in sports movies, war movies, science fiction movies and fantasy movies, which overwhelmingly feature male actors and are overwhelmingly for male audiences.

I guess you could have an inspirational montage of everyone’s wives dying or getting kidnapped (Helen of Troy, Independence Day, etc.), but I suspect it would have the opposite effect of what you’d like. You might be better off making a montage of Stephen Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Brian Bosworth just saying “NOOOOO!!!!” over and over again.

Yes, they could do a lot more movies about women’s sports – so I guess _Stick It_ is the bold vanguard you’re looking for. They could even get ahead of reality a bit and make more than 45% of the coaches in those movies women.

But yeah, you’re going to have problems finding female field generals to give big inspirational speeches in historical epics.

And sure, you could make _The Mists of Avalon_ over and over and over again, but I suspect it would get tiresome.

Mainly – it’s not that Matt didn’t pick those scenes from those movies, it’s that those scenes disproportionately don’t exist or aren’t interesting, either because of the requirements of the genre, the precedent on which they are based, the audience they are looking for, or that fighting against type just for feministic reasons can be pretty counterproductive, since these speeches are all about “TYPE, TYPE, TYPE.”

Only a few movies and shows have really done this well, and certainly not enough to make a quality montage. This is a fight worth waging going forward, but it is not worth diminishing the brilliant work of Bill Pullman or Charles S. Dutton, who have done nothing wrong (except perhaps _Mr. Wrong_).

If you want big inspirational speeches from women who are in the shit, I’d recommend getting as excited as I am about the new season of _Battlestar Galactica_.

_Babylon 5_ has some good speeches by women, too, if we’re talking series, now. I can’t find it, but Delen gives a great speech about the awesomeness of humans in the first season. Here’s a clip of the President of the Earth that is a little depressing, but still rings with the ones ^up there^. (It’s sort of a spoiler, too, just in case anyone cares…)

@Fenzel: The funny thing about that clip is the one guy working in the background who seems to be completely ignoring her awesome speech but once or twice looks over his shoulder. So it’s not that he doesn’t hear her; it’s that he heard her, shrugged it off, and went back to work. “‘God sent me’? That’s interesting. Oh, well. Back to pushing buttons. Push the button. I’m going to pick on this bit, not because I disagree that they are thought of and marketed that way, but because I wish there were a better way to refer to this–there’s not some even split between movies for guys and movies for girls. What I mean is, I think the proportion of girls who see movies like Mighty Ducks versus the proportion of boys who see movies like, say, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is very different. The reason, I think, that the focus has tended to be on “guy’s” genres like sports, war, sci-fi and fantasy is that, for those successful among them, it’s really not just guys going. Had the audience for Lord of the Rings been as gendered in either direction as Sex and the City, it could never have been the hit it was.

The upshot seems to be that girls see guy movies, more than guys see girl movies. This means guy movies are more profitable and tend to dominate the marketplace, because they’re playing to more quadrants or whatever. This also means that I’m not sure we should still be thinking of them as guy movies. I think it plays to a false divide and perhaps limits them from being as good as they can be, as movies. (And I’d say excellent examples are given by series you bring up like BSG… as far as I know, no guys refuse to watch the show because it has kickass women or women in positions of leadership, so why should it follow that putting them there is in opposition to the genre or audience? I’m not saying the traditional association was groundless, just… perhaps unnecessary).

Attempting to be brief: I never had any intention of slamming the montage for this. I just saw it as a jumping off point and excellent gathering of evidence to overthink inspirational speeches in movies and gender. I would never mean that to read as a condemnation of Belinkie, Bill Pullman, or anybody, except the faceless “institutions” that are of course at fault for everything. I only starting looking for suggestions of female speeches because that would tend to weaken my argument that they are disproportionately not there.

There are definitely times when you’re tediously ripping DVDs and you think, “Why exactly is this worth it?” But then you read a comment like that, and you remember, “Oh yeah, I heart making cool things and sharing them with thousands of like-minded strangers.” So thanks.

I also think you touch on something very true, about the intersection between irony and earnestness. I once performed a rousing rendition of “Proud to Be an American” in a karaoke bar. After it was done, a guy asked me if the performance had been sincere or ironic, and I sort of shrugged at him. The song is very cheesy, but it’s also kind of awesome. It really does hit this sort of weird sweet spot where I enjoy it simultaneously on two levels.

So Siwi, let me suggest the word “earony,” to mean something which is enjoyed partially earnestly, partially ironically. Let me try and use it. “The South Park movie is an earonic take on musicals.” That is, the movie both mocks musicals and celebrates them.

The disproportionate gender balance is an interesting issue. But I think if you look at how many of these speeches come either from coaches or generals, and then think about how many women have had those jobs historically, it’s not surprising.

Gab – not sure I’d hold Sister Suffragette up as pro-woman. The mom in Mary Poppins pretty much just exists to give feminists a bad name.

The Babylon 5 speech is indeed cool. But for this montage, I had a loose rule to use only movies, no TV shows (I cheated a little with Charlie Brown and Peter Pan). Otherwise, there definitely would have been Buffy in there.

So people, what are the great inspirational movie quotes by women? IS there anything from T2 or Aliens? I actually watched G.I. Jane recently, and didn’t see anything that jumped out at me as an uplifting speech.

The music is from Branagh’s “Henry V,” composed by Patrick Doyle. The soundtrack is full of stirring, inspirational stuff like that.

Fenzel: Ivonovah is probably my favorite character in the series.

Belinkie: I think “Sister Suffrogate” is pro-woman in a comical way. I find it refreshing. “[a]s a group/ They’re rather stupid.” Kills me. And really, the lyrics are pretty tongue-in-cheek. The crazy feminists like her in the suffrage movements both in Europe and here helped drive the men in power holding back their right to vote over the edge. THIS “daughters’ daughter” surely “adores” them for it. Thus, and in answer to your last question, check out _Iron Jawed Angels_ about Alice Paul and the women involved in the American movement for women’s suffrage under Wilson, the wave of feminism that finally got us the vote. No, it’s not an action flick, but it’s a great movie, imo.

Another strong Joan Allen performance, her portrayal of Goodie Proctor in _The Crucible_. I haven’t seen it in a while, but I do remember her having a number of really big/heavy scenes. Hm, and she was also in _Mists of Avalon_ too… Now that I think about it/ IMDB her, she seems to play awesome women fairly frequently. I mean, c’mon, I haven’t seen _Death Race_ yet, but I’m sure she’s scary-cool in it. Patty Nixon, Betty Parker, Pamela Landy… Maybe a Joan Allen montage of some sort would be fun, if I was able. Alas, I’m clueless as to how to make a YouTube video.

Spectacular! The only improvement I have found would be to let the music complete or fade more gracefully at the end. Right now, it’s rather abrupt.

Powerful – but just too short! These are awesome clips that because most are familiar leave me wanting about 20 seconds more of each one! It is interesting how some of these story lines become a part of our lives. I’ve used Mel Gibson in Braveheart as a metaphor at least twice this week.

I think the reason this works so effectively, and why such speeches in movies work in general, is because they ARE so silly; so bombastic. From a fundamental standpoint, self-aggrandizing bombast tends to come from one of two places: either a feeling of inherent superiority or from a desire to become bigger than one’s self. The kind of movies whose speeches are collected in this 135 seconds of joy here celebrate the latter while condemning the former, in some plot related way.

Aragorn could’ve done what Sarumon did and conceded to Sauron, but he didn’t. He stood and fought, even when hopelessly outnumbered, and never gave up.

The boys from Old School could’ve just given up on their fraternity, but they didn’t. They worked hard and fought against the evil Jeremy Piven, and didn’t give up. And so on.

We all know it’s silly, but at the same time it moves us, because it strikes at a central chord of what makes us human: If we didn’t believe that we could dig down deep and make it through, regardless of odds, how the hell could we get out of bed in the morning?

And I think that, more than any innate sexism in society is why a girls will see “guy” movies, but not the other way around. When the women buy shoes in Sex and The City, it’s pretty much just women buying shoes. At best, you could argue it’s a metaphor for consumerism, but even then it’s just buying something as a metaphor for buying things in general. From a basic standpoint, women buying shoes is something that is really only interesting to women.

Conversely, when Rocky goes the distance with Apollo in Rocky, it’s boxing as a metaphor for damn near anything you want it to be. Everyone, man or woman, can relate to needing redemption, to being an underdog, to wanting just one more shot, etc.

I must admit, also, I’d been searching for a way to communicate what I’d described as “Loving something for it’s strengths, while knowing of it’s faults and loving those too” while trying to describe the appeal of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On a Prayer”, which I feel like is the musical equivalent of one of these speeches. I think earony is absolutely a perfect term for it. So thanks for that as well.

Baha. As a Robert Sean Leonard fangirl, I watched the entire thing just to see if Mr. Keating’s speech from Dead Poet’s Society was in there. Also, I’d like to point out that DPS and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off were the only movies in there that I recognized and have seen. I feel pathetic.

The only real ‘on the verge of battle’ inspirational speech by a woman I can think of is Elizabeth I: The Golden Age (or Elizabeth I, HBO series) both scenes from Tilbury.

What an awesome compilation! At first I sort of smirked at the over-the-top cheesiness of the Big Speeches, but by the end, I was truly moved. I think that’s my own personal definition of ‘earony’ in this case – to start out feeling cynical about and almost scoffing at the “We Can Do It!” theme, but then falling under the spell of that very theme and feeling my heart swell and my eyes mist.

I was especially tickled to see the clips from The Goonies and The Neverending Story, partly b/c you wouldn’t necessarily expect to see them in a montage like this. Matt Belinkie, you rock!

It also gives you a warm feeling about the movies, and how much uplift we can get from them when they’re at their best. Even the lesser movies represented here are exciting to see. This should be an Oscar show clip montage.

In Wilmington speech, Biden stresses access to clean water with new federal funding

It didn't take long for some good-natured ribbing about there being more than one Wilmington.

"Mayor (Bill) Saffo, thanks for the passport to your city," President Joe Biden said at his presidential visit to the Wilmington Convention Center on Thursday. "By the way, you ain't the only Wilmington in America," referring to the one in his home state of Delaware.

And while there was a joke here and there sprinkled among remarks that lasted less than 30 minutes, including some jabs at former President Donald Trump, most of Thursday's speech centered around clean water, infrastructure and jobs for the Port City and across the country.

"It is my great honor to welcome you all here today on this historic day as we host the President of the United States," Saffo said, kicking off the evening's speeches.

Biden in Wilmington: A look at activities surrounding the president's visit on Thursday

The primary purpose behind the president's visit to the Port City was to announce a $3 billion-dollar federal investment into replacing toxic lead piping throughout the nation.

"I'm here to talk about something very basic and fundamental to our communities, to our economy, to our basic human dignity -- safe clean drinking water," Biden said. Lead service lines have been known to pose severe health risks for children, Biden said, including the stunting of growth, slowed learning, and lasting brain damage.

Paris Pugh, a second-grade teacher from Bradley Creek Elementary School, provided insight into the relevance of the issue locally. Bradley Creek Elementary School recently replaced a water fountain with high levels of lead on school grounds using funds from the president's American Rescue Plan.

"My students drink from that water fountain, filling their water bottles every day, so it is a health issue that hits home for me," Pugh said to the StarNews.

"No teacher or student should have to worry about their most basic needs, like access to clean water. Thanks to President Biden and Vice President (Kamala) Harris, students and teachers don't have to worry," Pugh said in her speech.

Biden underscored the need for urgency in addressing this issue.

"There is no safe level of exposure. None," Biden said. "Until the United States of America...deals with this, how can we say we're (a) leading nation in the world?"

Approximately nine million lead service lines remain in the country with approximately 300,000 of those lines present in North Carolina alone, Biden said. Nearly half of the funding allocated to the removal of these lines will be directed to disadvantaged communities across the U.S.

"Studies show communities of color have been the hardest hit," Biden said. "We have to make things right."

The president referred to his 10-year-plan to remove all lead-containing services lines as one of the nation's most ambitious water agendas and highlighted how the initiative will create "good paying jobs you can make a serious living with without a college degree (and that) you can raise a family on."

Referencing Enviornmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan and Gov. Roy Cooper's recent visit to Fayetteville, Biden mentioned the administration's finalization of the first national PFAS drinking water standard. The Biden administration has dedicated $ 9 billion in funding to address PFAS and drinking contaminants.

"Communities across the Cape Fear watershed know too well why this matters," Biden said. "As a consequence of PFAS, you've seen aggressive cancers emerge in that area. It's gone so far, that we're advising and warning you can't eat the fish from the same water that you drink."

Both Regan and Cooper were present in Wilmington on Thursday and spoke prior to the president.

"All of us working together will achieve President Biden's vision of removing all lead pipes in this country," Regan said, adding that as a father himself, he empathizes with other parents who worry about the health and safety of their own children.

Cooper, who the president referred to as "one of the best governors in the United States of America," expressed gratitude for federal support of statewide efforts. "North Carolina is used to being first in the nation in a lot of things," Cooper said. "We're going to stay out front working to protect clean drinking water."

A few audience members voiced their approval of Thursday's overall message following the event.

Kyle Horton, a physician in Wilmington, said she was "really excited about the monumental announcement of investment in clean and safe drinking water," adding that Wilmington is "on the frontline of this crisis in many ways, including with PFAS."

Judy Justice, a former teacher and New Hanover County School Board member, said that "kids from certain neighborhoods where the lead contamination was evident (had a lot) lower test scores" from her experience as a teacher and administrator. "It should have been addressed this way, in my opinion, 30 years ago."

The presidential visit also encompassed discussion of decreasing unemployment rates, the Affordable Connectivity Program, pharmaceutical costs, and the federal deficit, among others.

"We're the only country in the world who (has) come out of every crisis we've entered stronger than we went in," Biden said before heading offstage. "There is nothing beyond our capacity when we work together."

Good morning to everyone in this room. I would like to thank the principal, the teachers, and my dear friends for allowing me to speak to you today about pollution. One of the biggest problems the world is now dealing with is pollution. The degradation of the quality of the air, water, and soil is caused by the introduction of dangerous contaminants into the ecosystem.

As human civilization developed, humans created tools and things to make life easier. We began to abuse nature and pollute it throughout this process. The melting of Antarctic glaciers as a result of global warming is a problem we are currently experiencing.

In addition to harming the environment, pollution also spreads illnesses that have the potential to eradicate all living things. Water quality has decreased and aquatic life has been wiped off by toxic substances dumped into the environment. Asthma and other lung conditions are brought on by the emission of toxic gasses into the atmosphere.

More and more laws are being established to reduce pollution, and governments all around the world have embraced them. However, simply laws and regulations cannot aid in pollution control since each individual has a responsibility to take independent action to reduce pollution. Additionally, it is important that young children learn about pollution and how it affects both the environment and their future.

To sum up my speech, I would like to emphasize that all forms of pollution harm the environment, animals, and people. People must bring important decisions for a brighter future. Since pollution puts many innocent lives in danger, we should take part in efforts to combat and manage this issue. As a team, we can reduce pollution. Thank you.
