‘Memoir of the Sunday Brunch’: Food, Family, Faith

sunday brunch book reviews

“My mother cried forty-three-year-old tears when she found out she was pregnant with me,” writes Julia Pandl, the youngest of nine children, in Memoir of the Sunday Brunch . She writes a feel-good memoir about growing up in a crowded family where everyone is required to work at the family restaurant — especially at the busy (and dreaded) Sunday buffet. Pandl’s father, George, owned and operated one of Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s favorite eateries. While the memoir’s title suggests that Sunday brunch is the primary story, Pandl only spends a few chapters here. Her book elaborates on memories of growing up amidst the sensibilities of her parents: her father’s frugality and work ethic and her mother’s passivity and Catholicism.

The first part of her memoir focuses on childhood and teen years, while the second part changes tone, and documents, sometimes non-chronologically, the deaths of her elderly parents when Pandl is in her 30s. Pandl constructs a folksy bravura that endorses Midwestern American values. Her bio states that she “moonlights” as a stand-up comedian and so PG-rated jokes about vomit and flatulence, with the occasional f-bomb, punctuate her memoir. She writes with a wry, tongue-in-cheek style that coats her anecdotes with sweetness (e.g., “watching George come unglued on a Sunday morning was like sitting next to a silent church fart”). This is a common way to deal with events that are otherwise abusive and tragic.

For example, she writes about various injuries in humorous tones: her brother slicing off the tip of his finger, and the time he clamped both her hands in a vice in the basement and then left her there. She describes a bleeding gash from jumping on her parent’s bed as “about the size and color of a plum.” Of course, all of these wounds occur when there is no adult supervision around. As Pandl describes it, “that’s how the chaos was managed in our family: the next oldest kid took care of the younger one. It was a perfectly acceptable arrangement.”

She describes how her older sister registers her for school: “My mother couldn’t bear the thought of bringing yet another kid to… school.” Her memoir skates across all the dysfunction, coating it in a kind of syrup. It’s all “perfectly acceptable,” but there is still that lurking chaos that comes from accepting, not questioning her parent’s values.

She places her parents in “the Greatest Generation”, Tom Brokaw’s millennial catch-all term that basically meant “parents of boomers”. In the national argument, these types are respected despite their conservative, if not wacky values and mores. Pandl finds her father charming and heroic, despite his tendency to serve the family cheese and meat “with a little age on it” to avoid wasting any food. George serves her an old steak after he has sautéed it in onions and mushrooms to mask the smell: “it was like chewing the gauze off a festering open wound.” Of course, we all accept our family “as-is”. But in Pandl’s memoir, there are no moments when she moves past the personal to offer a critical perspective.

Details about her mother’s experience, she eventually loses a foot to diabetes, haunt the memoir’s background: her tears, her nine pregnancies and labors, one lasting four days, and her various aches and pains, which become severe by the end of her life. Pandl focuses on her mother’s religion, and the faith that takes her to the Cathedral of St. Paul though she is suffering from back pain with a dearth of painkillers. Pandl describes the look on her mother’s face: “Her eyes… had a pristine sparkle like a snow-covered lake on a sunny winter day.” Pandl wants to find the panacea to replace the more obvious tragic nature of her mother’s life. Like the Catholicism that obviously forbade birth control, mandating nine children, too many for her mother to bear taking the youngest to school.

In the second part of the book, by far the strongest, Pandl’s tone changes as she focuses on her parent’s health challenges and recounts in detail, their deaths. Here the book becomes a memoir of care-giving, a timely topic for boomers who, in the last decade, nursed “the Greatest Generation” on their collective deathbeds. Pandl turns lyrical and repetitive, writing chapters that feel like prose poems, and that attempt to get at the irrational cold leftovers of grief. As she details the play-by-play of her father’s last days, she weaves in quotidian notes from his daily medical chart: medications, meals. “Let’s face it,” she remarks near the end, “grief can get a little boring.” Pandl’s memoir is not boring, though she sometimes repeats anecdotes and details that she’s already gone over, the same way her own father repeats certain phrases, “rise and shine, daylight in the swamps!” and “what do you think they did in the covered-wagon days?”

Memoir of the Sunday Brunch is about a lot more than Sunday brunch. It’s highly readable and while amusing, it’s also shocking, as most memoirs usually have to be to raise the story above boring. Pandl’s memoir presents ideas about “normal” Midwestern American existence. At one point, she describes accepting how she and her siblings become like their parents, buying pants with an elastic waistband, a seemingly inevitable turn. The memoir insists on this kind of acceptance, often using the metaphor of food. Pandl explains, “food was sacred… eventually food taught us the basics: how to entertain, how to clean up after ourselves, how to behave. It worked. That’s as simply as I can put it. Rotten, fresh, messy, pretty—it didn’t matter: my family came together around food”.

Somehow she also learned that “putting it simply” is a positive. I’m not accepting that value, the virtue of simplicity, quite yet.

sunday brunch book reviews

At age 12, Julia Pandl was initiated into the rite of the Sunday brunch while working at her father's Milwaukee-based restaurant with her eight older siblings. There she learned the ropes of the family business as well as life lessons that would shape her for all the years to come. Her time working at the restaurant was not just a time of growing up, but ultimately of becoming a source of strength and support as the world her father knew began to change into a tougher, less welcoming place.

BOOK REVIEW // Sunday Brunch

February 21, 2021 by Lisa Thake Leave a Comment

Have you ever watched Sunday Brunch? It airs every Sunday on Channel 4 and has been a huge success since its start in 2014.

If you are like me, you will no doubt love a good cookbook and what better than having one you are able to customise? The new offering from Sunday Brunch allows you to do just this.

Sunday Brunch personalised cookbook

A personalised cookbook

My husband and son do not eat meat and so I often find that I could have a great cookbook and for family cooking I am only left with a handful of recipes that suit us all.

With this customisation there are 125 recipes to choose from to fill your six chapters, each containing seven recipes. Believe me it is hard to whittle them down as they all looked great and choosing just 42 was hard but also quite fun!

What’s more you can add personalisation on the front, back and add a message inside too so a great gift idea too.

Trying the recipes

When I received the book I was excited to try some out straight away so my husband and son were treated to both a Saturday and Sunday brunch.

The first recipe we tried was Huevos Rancheros and the second was French Toast. I was unable to find the nectarines recommended for the French Toast so opted for blueberries and cherries, but you could pretty much use whatever fruit topping you wanted.

Huevos Rancheros recipe

I shared photos of both on my Instagram stories and out of pure curiosity I did a poll to see what the split between sweet and savoury camps were.  The results were almost 50/50 – actually 45% savoury and 55% for sweet.

sunday brunch book reviews

Both recipes were delicious but the Huevos Rancheros was my favourite and one I will definitely make again – I shared the recipe with a friend who asked following my insta post and she also made it describing it as mouth-watering, which is pretty accurate!

Now just to decide what to make next!

These Are Your New Breakfast Favorites

Variations have been around since bread was invented, but these new takes on French toast show it off simply and stunningly.

Melissa Clark

By Melissa Clark

Melissa Clark has created more than a dozen French toast recipes. These two are her best yet.

Humans have been rehabilitating rock-hard, stale loaves into edible food since bread was first invented. But the recipe that has become irrevocably rooted in American breakfast culture is French toast .

Based on the French “pain perdu,” or lost bread, French toast is traditionally made from old, leftover slices softened in a mix of milk and eggs, then fried until golden and crisp on the outside and creamy inside.

Recipe: Brown Sugar Sheet-Pan French Toast

While the dish may have originally been a way to rescue old bread, the costly milk, eggs and butter it calls for made it far from thrifty. In “ The Oxford Companion to Food ,” Alan Davidson writes that, although French toast is iconically represented as a strategy for using up stale bread, its expensive ingredients suggest it was “more frequently regarded as a delicacy.”

Mr. Davidson’s list of historical variations includes an ancient Roman example from Apicius (using wine and honey); its Anglo-Norman cousin (served with almond milk); and their Spanish relation, torrijas (adorned with syrup and cinnamon). I’ve seen (and created) modern iterations that include peanut butter and condensed milk , streusel crumbs and pears , pumpkin spice and pecans .

But no matter how many extravagant ingredients you lavish on your French toast, the best versions are still made from days-old bread — or at least bread that’s been dried out in the oven or toasted (which adds a nice grilled flavor). Spongy, fresh bread would dilute the egg mixture with its moisture, while dehydrated bread would more thirstily absorb the custard, swelling and plumping voluptuously. It may take longer to soak dry bread, but it’s worth the wait. Assembling everything the day before and sticking it in the fridge overnight ensures maximum absorption and makes your morning easier, too.

Recipe: Lemon Soufflé French Toast

Most classic recipes call for frying the soaked slices, but I gave that up years ago. Why stand over the stove frying soggy bread in an undercaffeinated state when your oven can do all the work? Besides, while the oven is on, it’s easy to throw in a pan of bacon to cook at the same time. Baking won’t give you the crisp fried crust; I compensate with a sprinkle of sugar, which caramelizes and turns crunchy as it bakes.

I apply the sugar differently in these two new recipes, to distinct but equally delicious results. I created them for my YouTube cooking show , Shortcut vs. Showstopper , where I demonstrate two versions of classic recipes, one simple but still stunning, the other a more complex variation designed for the maximum wow factor.

For the simple French toast , baked on a sheet pan, I lay the soaked sliced bread on top of a layer of brown sugar and butter. As the bread bakes, the sugar turns into a glossy, candylike crust that snaps when your fork cuts through to the soft, vanilla-infused center.

The showstopper version , inspired by a cloudlike soufflé, features a lemon-scented sugar sprinkled on top. During baking, the sugar singes and darkens in spots, while the bread puffs and turns golden. A cross between bread pudding and a fancy soufflé, this makes the most elegant of brunch dishes.

Either recipe would be a perfect thing to serve on Mother’s Day.

As to what kind of bread to start with, it depends on what texture you’re going for. An egg-enriched bread like challah becomes caky, with a tender, tight crumb. Open-textured bread, like brioche or even croissants, capture more air and end up lighter and fluffier. Regular firm white bread (pain de mie) holds its shape and stays very moist after cooking, while crusty breads like sourdoughs and baguettes retain a pleasant and satisfying chew.

The possibilities are endless. In fact, the flexibility of the dish may be the secret of its staying power. With basic ingredients that you can adjust to suit your mood and keep interesting every time, it’s no wonder French toast never gets stale.
