How to write a love letter: 60+ ideas & examples.

Lia Miller, M.A., MPA, MSW

Some would say that writing a love letter is a dead form of communication, a relic from olden days that's irrelevant in the era of instant gratification where we find ourselves today.

At a time when we are separated by visible and invisible barriers, forced apart by social distancing, and almost completely reliant on more impersonal forms of communication like email, social media, and video chatting, a love letter is a particularly meaningful and romantic gesture because it's slow, intentional, and deeply personal.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to write a love letter to a partner, a crush, or just about anyone.

How to write a love letter to your partner

Be ready to get vulnerable.

Writing a love letter to a long-term partner such as a boyfriend, girlfriend, or spouse can be a great way to affirm or even rekindle your love for each other.

Mental health counselor Chaute Thomson, LMHC , points out that couples can often forget to keep connecting with each other as they get swept up in the hustle and bustle of daily life.

So, a love letter can be a moment to step back, get in touch with your emotions, and show some serious affection to your partner—particularly if it's not something you often do with each other.

"Allow yourself to be vulnerable and share your heart," she recommends. "Many times, we are scared to truly share ourselves out of fear of rejection or misunderstanding, but writing a love letter creates a genuine opportunity to connect with one another."

Really lean into your emotions—that's what's going to really make your love letter sing.

Start out the letter with a personal greeting

The greeting is important because it will set the tone for your entire letter, so you want to make sure you start off with something that will catch their attention and keep them reading.

Don't just start with "Dear [name]"—instead, greet them with something more romantic or personalized. Pet names and inside jokes work great.

  • To my best friend...
  • To my darling...
  • To my soul mate...
  • To my forever love...
  • Baby, sweetie, bae, etc.
  • Dear [pet name]...

Say why you're writing the letter

Is it an anniversary or another special occasion? Did your partner come through for you in a big way and you want to show appreciation? Have you just been feeling a lot of love for your partner and wanting to show your affection?

Whatever it is, say why you are writing the letter to give your letter some context.

Tell them why you love them and/or being with them

The body of the letter is where you will really pour out your heart.

For a longtime love, you want to talk about memories, overcoming obstacles together, what made you fall in love initially, why you still love them today, and what you see in the future.

Examples and ideas:

  • Tell them why you love them. In some cases, this can literally be a list of the things you love about them and more importantly why you love these qualities or attributes.
  • Literally "count the ways" you love them, and list some of the reasons for your love.
  • Talk about how your life has changed since they became a part of it and why you are grateful for that.
  • Talk about the future, where your relationship will be going next, how you will be there to support and "show up" for each other. Talk about why the future together is exciting.
  • Reaffirm your love and commitment to them and how you will hold up your side of the relationship/partnership.

Use storytelling

Recall a romantic memory—the first date, the first time you saw them, your wedding day, an anniversary, a special vacation, the first time you laughed together or cried together, etc. The point is to make it meaningful.

  • When I first saw you...
  • The first time I heard your voice...
  • When we first met, I immediately knew you were special because...
  • I knew you were the one when...

Close the letter warmly

Closing or wrapping up the letter is important because it is where you sum up all the things you have just laid out in your letter. This section shouldn't be that long since you've put the meat of the letter into the body.

  • I look forward to loving you for a lifetime.
  • I am so lucky to be with my best friend and soul mate.
  • These years with you have been the happiest of my life.
  • My love for you will never end.
  • Till death do us part—I said it then and I still mean it now.

Writing a letter for a crush is a lot different from writing a love letter to a partner.

For starters, writing for a crush can be really scary because there is a risk in putting yourself out there if you have no clue if the feelings are mutual.

However, there is no way to know how they will respond if you don't open yourself up.

Many of the tips given in the previous section of writing a letter for a longtime love or partner apply to writing a letter to crush, though obviously the difference is you don't know them as well.

Here are some general tips for letter writing for a crush:

Consider whether it's the right gesture

Love letters can be a really romantic way to let someone know you like them, but they can also come off strong and can veer into "creepy" territory if you're not careful.

Before writing a full-throttle love letter to a crush, you should have some sense of where they stand—some inclination that they might feel the same way about you.

If you know that you're both crushing on each other, a love letter can be a great gesture. Alternatively, you can write someone a love letter simply with the intention of making them feel loved, without making it about trying to start a relationship with them.

Sending an extremely affectionate love letter to someone who has no clue that you like them or who doesn't view your relationship romantically might be overwhelming and can make some people uncomfortable.

Consider whether you're writing this letter for their benefit or for your own; if the latter, it may make more sense to write the letter without sending it. This can still be a very therapeutic process for you!

Start with an attention grabber

It can be powerful to hear someone describe shared memories and interactions from their point of view. Consider describing how you've experienced your time together:

  • When I first saw you, you took my breath away...
  • When I heard you speak, it really impressed me or caught my attention...
  • You are captivating and make me feel things I haven't felt before...
  • The time we spend together is so precious to me...
  • The first time I spoke to you, I knew you were someone special...

Compliment them

Many people love receiving compliments that make them feel good about themselves; if nothing else, most people are interested in hearing how other people see them.

Without going over the top, describe the little things that make this person special to you. Don't just focus on their outward appearance—talk about their inner qualities, such as their strength, resilience, playfulness, passion for their work, etc.

Pay attention to the details

Don't be too general in your letter. Don't just say that you like them or that they caught your interest. Tell them why you like them and how they make you feel.

  • You make me happy because...
  • I always look forward to seeing you because...
  • I find you captivating because...

If you're feeling stuck, find inspiration. Look for examples of love letters that say things similar to what you want to say. Look at the great poets and writers and find inspiration in their words. You can even quote them if it feels appropriate.

Drop in a cheesy line

There is nothing wrong with a little cheese if it captures how you really feel.

  • When I think about you, I end up with a stupid grin on my face.
  • Since I met you, I've been feeling like I'm living the best dream of my life.
  • We're all special, but you raised the bar on that.

Be clear about your intentions

Make sure they know why you're writing this letter. Are you just wanting to make them feel good? Are you telling them how you feel because you're hoping they might feel the same way?

If you're not sure where the recipient stands, it is important to let them know that there isn't any pressure on them to do anything, to respond to the letter in any specific way, or to feel the same way you do.

Talk about the future, if appropriate

If you and the recipient are already in a process of courtship (i.e., you both already know you like each other), it can be really romantic to daydream about the future.

When closing your letter, consider imagining what the relationship might look like:

  • Talk about the fun dates you could go on.
  • Talk about the silly arguments you might have.
  • Talk about watching your favorite movies in an evening of Netflix and chill.
  • Talk about the upcoming good days and the bad days.
  • Talk about how awesome it will be dating each other!

General tips for writing a creative love letter

Set the mood.

Before you even put pen to pad, you need to get yourself in a letter-writing state of mind. According to Laura Louis, Ph.D. , a licensed psychologist at Atlanta Couple Therapy, your "state of mind is so important when preparing yourself to write a love letter.

To get yourself into a mindset of creativity and inspiration, you need to manage your environment."

Tapping into your five senses can help you get into the right head space.

For example:

  • If possible, go to a place you find inspiring, creative, and romantic to write your letter. Alternatively, you can find a good photo of the location in mind (e.g., a photo of a beach at sunset) and place it in your work area where you can easily see it and draw motivation from it.
  • "Music can be incredible for getting into that creative space," says Louis. If you are motivated by music, make a playlist that taps into that creative part of yourself and brings up positive feelings that you associate with the person you are writing the letter for.
  • Don't discount aromatherapy to help get you into a love-letter-writing mood. "Certain scents can affect your mood. In particular lavender and eucalyptus are powerful in affecting your mood" and inspiring creativity, says Louis. Alternatively, you can use a scent that you love that reminds you of your loved one.

Think before you write

You don't need to be an expert writer to get your point across, but you should take the time to think about what you want to say before you start writing.

It's OK if you have to write and rewrite the letter a few times before you get to a version that you are ready to send.

Practice makes perfect. If you don't like what you've written, don't settle. Keep at it until you end up with something you love, which will ensure your recipient loves it too.

At the same time, don't put too much pressure on yourself. The recipient will most likely appreciate your efforts, and their focus will be on the sentiments shared in the letter and not on how "well" the letter was written.

Consider how you want the recipient to feel

A good love letter will make the recipient feel loved, cherished, accepted, desired, special, and important. As you're writing, think about not just what you want to say but also how you want the person to feel as they read your words.

Thompson suggests thinking about the five love languages as you write—aka touch, words of affirmation, acts of service, gifts, and quality time.

Which of these ways does this person enjoy receiving love? "Be sure to touch on what your partner's love language is when you are writing to tell them what you love about them," Thompson says.

Get the delivery right

The way you deliver your letter is almost as exciting as the letter itself. This is where you can get really creative and have some fun with it.

  • Go direct and hand it to them in person.
  • Use good ol'-fashioned "snail mail" and mail it to them with an envelope and stamp for a real treat. Who doesn't love getting mail that isn't a billing statement or promotional item?
  • Break it up into little bits and send your love on a "scavenger hunt" with clues leading them to the places they can find the different pieces of the letter until they have the whole thing—which leads them back to you.
  • Leave it in a place they will least expect, such as on the front seat of their car before they are about to leave the house or on the bedside table for them to find while you're out of town. Or if they take their lunch to work, tuck it away in their lunch so they have a surprise waiting for them when they open it up at work.
  • Use Post-it notes and leave short excerpts or key parts of your love letter on the Post-its, placed in strategic places throughout the house. Or you can even cover an entire wall in your words of love for them if you're feeling ambitious.

Why writing a love letter is so romantic

We live in a "microwave society" where people want things "quick, fast, and in a hurry," Louis says. But that's what makes letter writing so special.

It takes time to put together and is a permanent testament to your love that doesn't disappear in a long thread of text messages.

Lover letters are one of the greatest exemplars of true romance. The letter isn't even the romantic part but rather the idea that your lover is thinking of you even when they are not physically in your presence.

Writing a love letter lets them know their importance in your life, captures what makes your relationship special, and demonstrates what makes the person you are with amazing to you.

Finally, a love letter allows your partner to see themselves through your eyes, which is, in itself, a gift.

Best Love Letters

  • Napoleon to Joséphine

Ever since I left you, I have been sad. I am only happy when by your side. Ceaselessly I recall your kisses, your tears, your enchanting jealousy; and the charms of the incomparable Joséphine keep constantly alight a bright and burning flame in my heart and senses. When, free from every worry, from all business, shall I spend all my moments by your side, to have nothing to do but to love you, and to prove it to you? I shall send your horse, but I am hoping that you will soon be able to rejoin me. I thought I loved you some days ago; but, since I saw you, I feel that I love you even a thousand times more. Ever since I have known you, I worship you more every day; which proves who false is the maxim of La Bruyère that “Love comes all at once.” Everything in nature has a regular course, and different degrees of growth.

  • Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera

Nothing compares to your hands, nothing like the green-gold of your eyes. My body is filled with you for days and days. You are the mirror of the night. The violent flash of lightning. The dampness of the earth. The hollow of your armpits is my shelter. My fingers touch your blood. All my joy is to feel life spring from your flower-fountain that mine keeps to fill all the paths of my nerves which are yours.

  • Georgia O’Keeffe to Alfred Stieglitz

Dearest — my body is simply crazy with wanting you — If you don’t come tomorrow — I don’t see how I can wait for you — I wonder if your body wants mine the way mine wants yours — the kisses — the hotness — the wetness — all melting together — the being held so tight that it hurts — the strangle and the struggle.

  • Beethoven to his “Immortal Beloved”

Even in bed my ideas yearn towards you, my Immortal Beloved, here and there joyfully, then again sadly, awaiting from Fate, whether it will listen to us. I can only live, either altogether with you or not at all. Yes, I have determined to wander about for so long far away, until I can fly into your arms and call myself quite at home with you, can send my soul enveloped by yours into the realm of spirits — yes, I regret, it must be. You will get over it all the more as you know my faithfulness to you; never another one can own my heart, never — never! O God, why must one go away from what one loves so, and yet my life in W. as it is now is a miserable life. Your love made me the happiest and unhappiest at the same time. At my actual age I should need some continuity, sameness of life — can that exist under our circumstances? Angel, I just hear that the post goes out every day — and must close therefore, so that you get the L. at once. Be calm — love me — today — yesterday.

What longing in tears for you — You — my Life — my All — farewell. Oh, go on loving me — never doubt the faithfullest heart Of your beloved

Ever thine. Ever mine. Ever ours.

best love letters

  • George H. W. Bush to Barbara Bush

This should be a very easy letter to write—words should come easily and in short it should be simple for me to tell you how desperately happy I was to open the paper and see the announcement of our engagement, but somehow I can’t possibly say all in a letter I should like to. I love you, precious, with all my heart and to know that you love me means my life. How often I have thought about the immeasurable joy that will be ours some day. How lucky our children will be to have a mother like you…

  • Ronald Reagan to Nancy Reagan

I know tradition has it that on this morning I place Happy Anniversary cards on your breakfast tray. But things are somewhat mixed up. I substituted a gift & delivered it a few weeks ago.

Still this is the day, the day that marks 31 years of such happiness as comes to few men. I told you once that it was like an adolescent’s dream of what marriage should be like. That hasn’t changed.

You know I love the ranch but these last two days made it plain I only love it when you are there. Come to think of it that’s true of every place & every time. When you aren’t there I’m no place, just lost in time & space.

I more than love you, I’m not whole without you. You are life itself to me. When you are gone I’m waiting for you to return so I can start living again.

Happy Anniversary & thank you for 31 wonderful years.

Your Grateful Husband

  • Oscar Wilde to Lord Alfred Douglas

Everyone is furious with me for going back to you, but they don’t understand us. I feel that it is only with you that I can do anything at all,” Wilde wrote. “Do remake my ruined life for me, and then our friendship and love will have a different meaning to the world. I wish that when we met at Rouen we had not parted at all. There are such wide abysses now of space and land between us. But we love each other.

  • Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn

But if you please to do the office of a true loyal mistress and friend, and to give up yourself body and heart to me, who will be, and have been, your most loyal servant, (if your rigour does not forbid me) I promise you that not only the name shall be given you, but also that I will take you for my only mistress, casting off all others besides you out of my thoughts and affections, and serve you only,” he wrote. “I beseech you to give an entire answer to this my rude letter, that I may know on what and how far I may depend. And if it does not please you to answer me in writing, appoint some place where I may have it by word of mouth, and I will go thither with all my heart. No more, for fear of tiring you.

  • Vita Sackville-West to Virginia Woolf

I am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia,” she wrote. “I composed a beautiful letter to you in the sleepless nightmare hours of the night, and it has all gone: I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way. You, with all your undumb letters, would never write so elementary a phrase as that; perhaps you wouldn’t even feel it. And yet I believe you’ll be sensible of a little gap. But you’d clothe it in so exquisite a phrase that it should lose a little of its reality. Whereas with me it is quite stark: I miss you even more than I could have believed; and I was prepared to miss you a good deal. So this letter is really just a squeal of pain. It is incredible how essential to me you have become. I suppose you are accustomed to people saying these things. Damn you, spoilt creature; I shan’t make you love me any more by giving myself away like this — But oh my dear, I can’t be clever and stand-offish with you: I love you too much for that. Too truly. You have no idea how stand-offish I can be with people I don’t love. I have brought it to a fine art. But you have broken down my defenses. And I don’t really resent it.

best love letters of all time

  • Ernest Hemingway to Marlene Dietrich

I can’t say how every time I ever put my arms around you, I felt that I was home. Nor too many things. But we were always cheerful and jokers together.

Dearest Marlene: I always love you and admire you and I have all sorts of mixed up feelings about you […] please know that I love you always and forget you sometimes as I forget my heart beats. But it beats always.

Whenever you need, romantic good morning message can help you express your deep emotions through words in most beautiful way.

Greatest Love Letters

  • Abigail Adams to John Adams

My Dearest Friend,

…should I draw you the picture of my heart it would be what I hope you would still love though it contained nothing new. The early possession you obtained there, and the absolute power you have obtained over it, leaves not the smallest space unoccupied.

I look back to the early days of our acquaintance and friendship as to the days of love and innocence, and, with an indescribable pleasure, I have seen near a score of years roll over our heads with an affection heightened and improved by time, nor have the dreary years of absence in the smallest degree effaced from my mind the image of the dear untitled man to whom I gave my heart.

  • Prince Albert to Queen Victoria

Dearest deeply loved Victoria, I need not tell you that since we left, all my thoughts have been with you at Windsor, and that your image fills my whole soul. Even in my dreams I never imagined that I should find so much love on earth. How that moment shines for me still when I was close to you, with your hand in mine. Those days flew by so quickly, but our separation will fly equally so. Ernest [my brother] wishes me to say a thousand nice things to you. With promises of unchanging love and devotion, Your ever true Albert.

  • Mark Twain to Olivia Langdon

Out of the depths of my happy heart wells a great tide of love and prayer for this priceless treasure that is confined to my life-long keeping.

You cannot see its intangible waves as they flow towards you, darling, but in these lines you will hear, as it were, the distant beating of the surf.

  • Zelda Sayre to F. Scott Fitzgerald

I look down the tracks and see you coming—and out of every haze & mist your darling rumpled trousers are hurrying to me—Without you, dearest dearest I couldn’t see or hear or feel or think—or live—I love you so and I’m never in all our lives going to let us be apart another night. It’s like begging for mercy of a storm or killing Beauty or growing old, without you. I want to kiss you so—and in the back where your dear hair starts and your chest—I love you—and I can’t tell you how much—To think that I’ll die without your knowing—Goofo, you’ve got to try [to] feel how much I do—how inanimate I am when you’re gone—I can’t even hate these damnable people—Nobody’s got a right to live but us—and they’re dirtying up our world and I can’t hate them because I want you so—Come Quick—Come Quick to me—Lover, Lover, Darling—Your Wife

  • Richard Nixon to Pat Nixon

Dearest Heart,

…And when the wind blows and the rains fall and the sun shines through the clouds (as it is now) he still resolves, as he did then, that nothing so fine ever happened to him or anyone else as falling in love with Thee—my dearest heart.

  • Orson Welles to Rita Hayworth

Dearest Angel Girl:

…I suppose most of us are lonely in this big world, but we must fall tremendously in love to find it out. The cure is the discovery of our need for company — I mean company in the very special sense we’ve come to understand since we happened to each other — you and I. The pleasures of human experience are emptied away without that companionship — now that I’ve known it; without it joy is just an unendurable as sorrow. You are my life — my very life. Never imagine your hope approximates what you are to me. Beautiful, precious little baby — hurry up the sun! — make the days shorter till we meet. I love you, that’s all there is to it.

  • Marilyn Monroe to Joe DiMaggio

I don’t know how to tell you just how much I miss you. I love you till my heart could burst. All I love, all I want, all I need is you—forever. I want to be just where you are and be just what you want me to be. I know it’s lousy of me to be so late so often, and I promise to try a million times harder, I promise. Love, Marilyn

best love letters ever

  • Johnny Cash to June Carter Cash

Happy Birthday Princess, We get old and get used to each other. We think alike. We read each others minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted. But once in awhile, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much. Happy Birthday Princess. John

Love is so powerful that it can be hard to describe. Express affection with good night love and make your partner blush before sleep.

Sweet Love Letters

Dearest darling, My heart only beats for you, and my eyes always look for you. You are the most special person who completes me in every sense. I am always going to love you more than anyone else, and I will always be by your side because we are meant to be together till eternity. Love you.

Dear…, I had never believed in love before I met you. I only had the idea that something like love existed, but when I laid my eyes on you, I saw it coming alive. You have made my soul come alive, and my heart couldn’t stop loving you for a mere moment. I am utterly grateful to destiny for you and your love. You are the sweetest thing in my life, and there is nothing else I would ever love as I love you. Thank you for being in my life and making me believe in true love. With you, I feel truly alive. Yours

My love is forever yours. Come rain and sunshine, I will treat you like a diamond and will never let you stay a mile from me. Even if you are far away from me, you will never leave my heart even for a second. My love for you will blossom until my dying days because I have felt purpose and I want to show you, love. While I might not have the most tantalizing words at my disposal to express my love to you, I will manage these three words (I love you) to let you know that my world revolves around you all year round. You know how I feel about you, I want you to also know that there is no mistaking in it. My love for you is real and I will love you forever because you are the only one that deserved to be loved this tenderly.

You are, without a doubt, the most wonderful thing in my life. I never dreamed I could feel about someone the way I do about you. You’re beautiful, sweet, kind, and caring, and I love you more every day. I can’t imagine a day without you, and I vow to make you feel as special as you make me feel. Thank you for making me the happiest person alive.

Since you came into my life, you have given me hope. My life has changed. You are the one I want to spend my entire life with, never to leave you. Without you, life would be meaningless. I would not have achieved this much without you. You are my world and everything. I am blessed to have you. I love you.

Every day I wake up early just to see you sleep beautifully in your sleep. You give meaning to my life. Believe me when I say I believe in love only because of you. You are my soulmate, my everything. On your special day, I want to shower you with love and all my blessings. Sharing my life with you has been an awesome journey, and I am confident that with you in my life, I can face any hurdle, and emerge victorious.

I wanted to write you a love letter. I know it’s a little silly but I thought I’d try anyway. It’s just that I feel so much when I’m with you that I try to put it in words, so that you know how I feel about you. You are such a gift to me. Having you in my life is such a blessing. Though, I can’t see you right now, I can picture how you are. I see your eyes and how they shine, I see the way you smile and how you look right before you laugh. I want to be next to you right now. I don’t want you to hold anything back. I hope that you know that I will always be there for you. I can feel you close to me even though you’re far away. Please believe me when I say I love you.

Darling, You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I have no words to describe my love for you or tell you what your presence means to me. Everything you do makes me happy. Your warmth, compassion, and kindness soothe my soul. You are a beautiful angel that has lit up my life, and every day, I thank God to have sent you into my life. I love you a lot. Yours truly,

Dear, I am hoping this letter makes you smile. I want to tell you how much I appreciate you and your efforts in keeping this relationship healthy and happy. While arguments in a relationship are common, it is more about handling the differences that make the marriage strong. I want to thank you for your maturity and understanding in matters. Thank you for placing your trust in me and helping me understand where I was going wrong. I love you and want to continue to build a happy marriage with you. Yours…

My tenderness, my happiness, what words can I write for you? How strange that although my life’s work is moving a pen over paper, I don’t know how to tell you how I love, how I desire you. Such agitation — and such divine peace: melting clouds immersed in sunshine — mounds of happiness. And I am floating with you, in you, aflame and melting — and a whole life with you is like the movement of clouds, their airy, quiet falls, their lightness and smoothness, and the heavenly variety of outline and tint — my inexplicable love. I cannot express these cirrus-cumulus sensations. Letters to Vera by Vladimir Nabokov

I hope you never doubt my love and intentions for you. As the stars light up the night sky, so does your love for me light up my world. Regardless of the time and day, you will always have my unwavering love and loyalty. I love loving you, and nothing can change that. I believe in you, and I believe in us. So, never, ever lose hope because we have a beautiful future ahead.

There is something so incredible about you that I find myself falling in love with you every day. I may not have told you, but I want to tell you that you have given my life a purpose and a direction that was missing until you came into my life. It is difficult to imagine my life without you because you are the one who rules it. Love you,

You are only one in my mind and in my heart. Do you know the effect you have on me? Even in times of stress, I find myself calmer than usual. I always seem to find the lighter side in things and situations. This is so unlike me, the pessimist I used to be. You are the only angel in my heart of heaven.

Dear, I still remember our first date, the first time I laid my eyes on you. Seeing you in that white dress, I knew it was love at first sight. Here is a reminder that I still love you after all these years, and nothing can ever change that. Thank you for always being by my side and helping me grow in life. We have come a long way from our first date, but I will continue to date you all my life. Yours,

Dear, Nobody has ever measured how much love the heart can hold. But I know that if someone could, they would not be able to measure the love I have for you in my heart. I love you more than you know, more than I can ever tell you. Yours,

Sometimes, words are not enough to express the best feelings. I want you to know that you are like a dream come true to me, and with you in my arms, I feel so complete and happy. Thank you for choosing and loving me beyond conditions.

My darling, Everything you do flutters my heart and keeps me in awe of your beauty. Every day, you inspire me to become the best version of myself and achieve new milestones. I had not waited even these ten days, could I have read your feelings, as I think you must have penetrated mine. I can hardly write. I am every instant hearing something which overpowers me. You sink your voice, but I can distinguish the tones of that voice when they would be lost on others. Too good, too excellent creature! You do us justice, indeed. You do believe that there is true attachment and constancy among men. Believe it to be most fervent, most undeviating, in. Jane Austen

You have always been with me during the hard times, giving so much support, courage, love, and advice, and I’m proud to say that I am the person I am today because of you by my side. With all sincerity of heart and purpose, I want you to know that I am always thinking about how nice and loving you have been to me. Sincerely, it wouldn’t have been this easy without you, and I will always love you beyond human imagination, until the end of time.

Dear, Before I met you, I didn’t know what it was like to be happy, to smile for no reason at all. You make me the happiest. It is so much fun being with you. All my days have been happy since you came into my life. I cannot thank you enough for the brightness you bring into my life. I love you now and always. Yours,

You may not know, but you are the only one who will rule my heart. No matter how old I get, my love will grow with each passing day. Love you to the moon and back

My love, The moment it struck me that what we had was true love was when I began to care deeply for someone other than myself, and all the love songs I heard became all about you. You are the very charm that my heart and mind recognize. I don’t want to ever give you reasons to doubt my love for you. We have become two imperfect people refusing to give up on each other. I love you with all that lives and breathes in me. In addition, thank you for sweeping me off my feet the way you did, and for bringing me all the love and peace.

…I know I sound bitter, but my darling, I don’t want to be. I’m honestly happy with my new life and my new friends. I feel I can breathe now. Most of all, I have you to live for. Realistically, there had to be a choice — you or them. How could it be both? I’ve never had a moment’s doubt. I love you. I believe in you completely. You are my dearest one, my reason for life. From Atonement by Ian McEwan

…But oh my dear, I can’t be clever and stand-offish with you: I love you too much for that. Too truly. You have no idea how stand-offish I can be with people I don’t love. I have brought it to a fine art. But you have broken down my defenses. And I don’t really resent it. Vita Sackville-West to Virginia Woolf

Knowing you are with me makes my life a dream come true. Remembering our first kiss is remembering since when my heart beats for you. When we first held hands, our souls became one. Seeing you is feeling everything is fine. My love, I share all my feelings with you.

You are the most beautiful person in the world. I am thrilled to be around you. There’s nobody like you in this entire universe. You are the only person with whom I would rather share my time. You are the reason why I wake up every day. You are the light that guides me through the darkness.

Dear, I love you. I am in love with you and I think I will always love you more than anything. I don’t say it enough and this letter is an effort to let you know how much I love you and how special you are to me. I love spending hours doing nothing but listening to music with you. I love going shopping with you. I love cooking dinner for you. I love taking walks with you. I will love you always.

If that’s true then you are mine. You are so kind and your warmth makes me feel content. I have never felt this way about my life before you became my life. You mean the world to me! Yours

I may not say this every day, but I love you so much that my day starts and ends thinking about you. When I am away from you, I keep looking forward to seeing you. I am proud of you my love, and honestly, I wouldn’t have been here where I am now if it weren’t for you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the compromises you have made for me. What to include

Tips for writing a love letter, how to end your love letter.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? When you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, do you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible? Does your main squeeze give you the over the fence, out of the park, World Series kind of stuff? If trying to write a love letter has you feeling more lost than literary, you’re definitely not alone. We'd bet money even William Shakespeare himself suffered a little writer’s block when he went to profess his feelings to his own Juliet.

How to start your love letter

We all know how intimidating it can be staring down a blank page, so let us help you out. Start off with a sweet salutation like, "Dear darling," "To my love" or using their special nickname so they know this letter is all about them. Don't be afraid to get mushy to really set the mood. Next, tell them why you're writing a letter instead of just signing a generic card. Maybe it's because you really want to put your feelings into words, you're so full of love that you can't hold back or because you know they're so special that they deserve a personal letter instead of just a card. If you're writing the letter in honor of Valentine's Day , a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion, this intro is a great place to do that. Then in the next paragraph or two, get right to the heart of the matter. The more personal, the better.

Romantic memories

A really effective love note, like any good piece of writing, is all about authenticity and specificity, says Devon Daniels, author of Meet You in the Middle . Instead of rattling off a laundry list of traits that could come off sounding insincere, pick a couple of things you love about them as an individual and really focus on those. For example, you might say, “Your commitment to helping others inspires me to be more giving,” or “I love that you’re never too busy to stop and play with our kids.” Once you focus on one trait, you’ll be surprised at how easily the words flow, Daniels says.

For Gina Hamadey, who wrote her husband a thank-you note each day for a month before writing her new book, I Want to Thank You , getting specific became even more important. She focused on things like how much she loves her husband playing music in the house to set the mood for the day or making really good eggs and coffee. “The most effective love letter is the one that shines a light on the person and all they are doing,” she points out.

What you love about them

While reading others’ steamy missives for inspiration can get your own creative juices flowing, resist the urge to copy the greats. “Don’t try to sound like someone else. You don’t have to be poetic or flowery unless that kind of thing comes naturally,” advises Kristan Higgins, author of Pack Up the Moon . Instead, Higgins suggests thinking about the first time you knew this was your ride-or-die person or the foundational aspects of your relationship. “You might say, ‘I knew you were going to be important because you irritated me and made me laugh the very first time we met,’” she says. Or you might point out how they make you feel safe or listen when you share your struggles.

“I learned that the most romantic and giving and loving letters aren't necessarily the ones that are the most poetic,” says Hamadey. “I think everyone in a relationship wants to be fully appreciated by the other person.” The phrase she used most in her letters was “you take such good care of us.” Sometimes, it’s the simplest truths that make the biggest impact.

Be candid and specific

When writing a love letter, you can’t go wrong by getting really granular about why you’re super into the person. This is no time to hold back. “The more specific you can be, the more romantic it will feel,” says Rachel Lynn Solomon, author of The Ex Talk . Instead of telling someone how much they always make you laugh, take it one step further by calling out a specific joke or instance that still makes you snort-giggle. That way, they'll know the letter is really about you two.

When Hamadey asked her husband Jake how the letters made him feel, he said it was the opposite of the old adage of missing the forest for the trees. “You and I say, ‘I love you’ a lot, and that is the forest, the love we have for each other,’” he told her. “This month refocused us on the nice trees that make up the forest.” When you focus on your own trees, you show the other person exactly how much they mean.

When in doubt, make a list

Both Daniels and Higgins love listing out the positive qualities that make your relationship really special. Daniels, who’s celebrating her 16th Valentine’s Day with her husband this year, says she might write down “16 things I love about you,” as a fun way to organize your thoughts.

If you haven't been together quite that long, you might list something you love for every month you've been dating, or some other number that's significant to the two of you. Making a list also gives you the opportunity to mix in some silly and serious angles, to balance out the mushy stuff.

Personalize it to your partner

If you know your loved one likes a particular style, consider getting creative with it that way. “The best love letters contain the personality and essence of the writer,” says Uzma Jalaluddin, author of Ayesha at Last , and Hana Khan Carries On . “My husband is not a writer, but he loves rhyming poems. As a result, my love notes are more love poems — of the ‘roses are red’ variety,”

Because this is love we’re talking about, a little spice never hurts. Don’t be afraid to sauce things up, Daniels advises. Even if you’ve never written a steamy scene before, the effort goes a long way. If nothing else, you can laugh about how ridiculous it came across later.

Relax and take your time

Writers know that the best way to beat the ol' creative block is taking the pressure off. Don’t beat yourself up over writing a Pulitzer-worthy masterpiece. Even if you’re the worst writer on the planet, your loved one will appreciate a letter that really comes from your soul. “No matter what, your person will love that you put in the effort,” Higgins says. “That’s what love is, after all. Showing up and giving it your best.”

Nothing will beat closing out your love letter than with the words "I love you." But if you're looking for more creative ideas, end your letter with what you want your future to look like, sum up how the past year (or 10!) has made you feel or pick a phrase you two often say when you're parting from each other in person.

There are also simple closing ideas, such as:

  • Forever and always
  • Eternally yours
  • Yours always
  • With all my love
  • Longing to see you
  • Patiently yours

how to write a love letter

Love letters are a form of writing that’s as old as the written word. Even in the modern world, many couples still exchange handwritten love letters.

You can use a love letter to confess your feelings to a new crush, to court someone you recently started dating, or to add more romance to a serious relationship.

So, how do you write a love letter that can truly win someone’s heart?

Read on to learn our top tips for how to write an amazing love letter as well as some examples to inspire you.

What Should You Include in a Love Letter?

How to start a love letter, 3 tips for writing a love letter, best love letter ideas and examples, how prowritingaid can help you write a love letter, conclusion on how to write a love letter.

Many people are hesitant to write love letters because they’re not sure what to include.

Luckily, there are many topics you can choose from. Here are three tried-and-true topics you can use in your love letter.

love letter topics

Topic 1: A Shared Memory

You can consider writing about a memory you’ve shared with the person you’re writing to.

Think back to all the romantic moments you’ve experienced with this person.

When was the first time you realized you were attracted to this person? What about the first time you realized how much you were in love with them?

Do you have any funny memories together that might make them smile or laugh? Any sweet stories you think you’ll still remember fondly in 50 years?

Topic 2: Reasons Why You Love This Person

Think about all the reasons you love the person you’re writing to.

Maybe you love the way they sing off-key when they’re doing chores. Or the puns they make every time they get an opportunity. Or the dimples they get in their cheeks when they smile.

Or maybe they’ve changed your life for the better, and nothing’s the same now as it used to be.

Chances are, the person you’re writing to knows you love them, but not necessarily why you love them. Listing the reasons is a surefire way to remind them how much you care.

Topic 3: Plans for the Future

So far, the topics we’ve discussed all have something to do with the past or the present.

Another fantastic option is to look toward the future.

Write about what you hope your relationship with this person will look like in a few years or even when you grow old together.

Do you hope to live in an apartment in a big city, in a large house in the suburbs, or in a cabin in the mountains? Do you hope to achieve your career dreams together? Do you want to have kids or pets?

A shared vision for the future is a strong foundation for a healthy relationship. Tell them about your vision and what you’ll do to make that vision come true.

starting a love letter

You can begin writing your letter with a sweet greeting, such as:

  • To my soul mate
  • To my darling
  • To my best friend
  • Dear [favorite pet name]

After the greeting, you can start writing the body of the letter by stating the reason you’re writing. Is there a special occasion, or did you just want to express your feelings?

You could say something like, “I’m writing this because it’s our first anniversary, and I’m so grateful we’ve had this amazing year together.”

Or you could say, “You’ve been so supportive of me during my big promotion, and I realized that I don’t tell you often enough all the reasons I love you.”

Once you’ve explained your reason for writing the letter, you can dive right into the contents of the letter.

Now that we’ve covered what to include in a love letter, let’s talk about some tips for how to do it well.

Tip 1: Be Specific

One common pitfall when writing a love letter is to write a generic one. If you could give this love letter to any of the people you’ve ever dated and still have it work the same way, then it’s probably not the best love letter.

You don’t want your love letter to just be a longer version of “I love you, baby” or “You’re the best partner ever.”

Make your love letter one that could only work between you and the person you’re writing to.

One way to do this is by referring to special memories and personality traits that are specific to the person you’re writing about. You can also include some inside jokes only your partner would understand.

The more specific your letter is, the more likely your partner is to be touched by the gesture.

Tip 2: Be Appropriate

Make sure your love letter is appropriate for the amount of time you’ve been together and how well you know this person.

If you’ve only been dating someone for a week, for example, you probably shouldn’t write about how many kids you hope to have with them. That’s a red flag that will probably scare them away.

Similarly, if you haven’t used the word “love” with this person before, you might not want to drop it for the first time in a letter, unless there’s a reason you can’t do it in person.

Tip 3: Be Genuine

The most important thing to remember is to write your love letter from the heart.

Don’t write things you think will impress the person you’re writing to, such as flowery quotes you didn’t come up with yourself. Instead, write things in your own voice, even if they sound simpler.

Remember that it’s okay to be vulnerable and share things you’re afraid to say out loud. A love letter is the perfect time to tell the naked truth.

love letter tips

The best way to learn how to write a love letter is by looking at great examples. Here are a few examples of love letters from real people you can use for inspiration.

Example #1: A Letter from Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera

Nothing compares to your hands, nothing like the green-gold of your eyes. My body is filled with you for days and days. You are the mirror of the night. The violent flash of lightning. The dampness of the earth. The hollow of your armpits is my shelter. My fingers touch your blood.

All my joy is to feel life spring from your flower-fountain that mine keeps to fill all the paths of my nerves which are yours.”

Example #2: A Letter from Johnny Cash to His Wife June

“Happy Birthday Princess,

We get old and get used to each other. We think alike. We read each other’s minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes we take each other for granted.

But once in a while, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much. Happy Birthday Princess.”

Example #3: A Letter from Prince Albert to His Wife Queen Victoria

“Dearest deeply loved Victoria, I need not tell you that since we left, all my thoughts have been with you at Windsor, and that your image fills my whole soul. Even in my dreams I never imagined that I should find so much love on earth. How that moment shines for me still when I was close to you, with your hand in mine. Those days flew by so quickly, but our separation will fly equally so. Ernest [my brother] wishes me to say a thousand nice things to you. With promises of unchanging love and devotion, Your ever true Albert.”

Example #4: A Letter from Vita Sackville-West to Virginia Woolf

“I am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia. I composed a beautiful letter to you in the sleepless nightmare hours of the night, and it has all gone: I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way. You, with all your un-dumb letters, would never write so elementary phrase as that; perhaps you wouldn’t even feel it. And yet I believe you’ll be sensible of a little gap. But you’d clothe it in so exquisite a phrase that it would lose a little of its reality. Whereas with me it is quite stark: I miss you even more than I could have believed; and I was prepared to miss you a good deal. So this letter is just really a squeal of pain. It is incredible how essential to me you have become. I suppose you are accustomed to people saying these things. Damn you, spoilt creature; I shan’t make you love me any the more by giving myself away like this—But oh my dear, I can’t be clever and stand-offish with you: I love you too much for that. Too truly. You have no idea how stand-offish I can be with people I don’t love. I have brought it to a fine art. But you have broken down my defences. And I don’t really resent it …”

Example #5: A Letter from Orson Welles to Rita Hayworth

“Dearest Angel Girl:

...I suppose most of us are lonely in this big world, but we must fall tremendously in love to find it out. The cure is the discovery of our need for company—I mean company in the very special sense we’ve come to understand since we happened to each other—you and I. The pleasures of human experience are emptied away without that companionship—now that I’ve known it; without it joy is just as unendurable as sorrow. You are my life—my very life. Never imagine your hope approximates what you are to me. Beautiful, precious little baby—hurry up the sun!—make the days shorter till we meet. I love you, that’s all there is to it.

There’s nothing more unattractive than bad grammar.

Okay, so that’s not entirely true. There are probably some things that are less attractive, like terrible dental hygiene.

Even so, you should avoid writing love letters that are riddled with typos and grammar mistakes.

Sure—you can type out a mushy text or pick up a super-sentimental greeting card to convey to your sweetheart how much you care, but nothing will give them butterflies like a full-blown love letter. And if you're wondering how to write a love letter like the pros, we're here to help (it's us, we're the pros).

Though you may have infinite shared memories, a laundry list of their adorable idiosyncrasies and boundless dreams for your future together knocking around in your head, it's not always easy to put your feelings about the object of your affections into words. That's why we've penned this guide, which not only breaks down the anatomy of a winning love letter, but also provides some love letter examples that range from notes to your crush to epistoles to your forever person. We've also included a few helpful prompts to get you into the romantic mindset, because it's much simpler to listen to what's in your own heart than to try and summon Shakespeare's ghost to help you out with the writing. (We're kind of over the whole "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" trope, anyway.) You can do better than the bard—just take note of our tips and tricks below.

In this article:

What to Say in a Love Letter

Love letter examples.

You've got the love, now it's time to let those romantic feelings flow through your pen. Here's exactly what to write in a love letter and where to place each sweet sentiment—from the beginning, to the middle, through the end of your message. Cupid should be taking notes.

How to Start a Love Letter

Starting always feels like the hardest, but when it comes to the format of a love letter, it's actually relatively easy. First things first: set your intention on why you're writing this letter to begin with. Of course, it's to express how much you care, but is it also a special time like Valentine's Day or an anniversary? Are you a long-distance couple looking for a little epistolary romance between weekends together? Are you dating casually and looking to take things to the next level? Writing to say "I love you," just because ? Or are you not a couple yet at all and you're making your first move as your crush's not-so-secret admirer?

It's important to take stock of all of these circumstances while writing a love letter because, depending on your relationship and the occasion, the tone will shift. That said, it's always a safe bet to address the recipient using their first name, preceded by either a classic "dear" or "my." If you're going for a playful tone, feel free to use a pet name that's personal to you. And if you're writing to someone who reads historical fiction and watches period dramas, then add an old-timey flourish with an opening like "My Immortal Beloved" (borrowed from Beethoven) or "My Adored [Girl/Boy/Person]"—taken from the 1845 Victorian letter-writing book, The Parlour Letter-writer, and Secretary's Assistant.

For your opening sentence, circle back to that initial intention and reference your reason for writing. Also, while you might be tempted to scrawl your most romantic thought on the page straight away, we prefer to set the mood with a meaningful sentiment that gets the letter on a slow burn track—so you can build with each paragraph and save that swoon-worthy declaration for the end. Here's what we mean:

My Timothée,

It's been three weeks since I've seen you last, but I still can't shake the butterflies I get from being wrapped in your arms.

Today, we celebrate two years together—and my love for you has grown deeper and stronger each and every day.

My Darling Pickle,

I'm just missing you a bunch today.

Love Letter Prompts

One of the most important rules of how to write a good love letter is to make it personal. Little details about the recipient's personality (how much you love their dimples, the way they get a skip in their step when they're excited) are lovely, as are silly anecdotes about the two of you (that time you won trivia as a team of two, how you dominated the dance floor at your friend's wedding). But don't forget to dig a little deeper here and include some more-serious notions along with the sweet and lighthearted ones. Remember, this is a romantic love letter for their eyes only, so tell them the things they might not hear from you as regularly as a simple "I love you."

Consider the following prompts to get some love letter ideas:

When was the first moment you felt a spark with them?

Speak about a cherished memory from an average day you spent together alongside a special occasion memory to show the range of fun times you have as a pair.

How have your feelings for them grown since you've known them?

Name a non-physical trait you think is special about your partner.

Digital save-the-date wedding etiquette and best places to shop

Describe how you hope they feel when they are with you (safe, supported, adored).

What's something they do every day that makes your heart flutter?

Reflect on a hardship you've supported them or they've supported you through.

Reference an inside joke the two of you share.

What makes the relationship between the two of you so special compared to others you've seen or experienced?

What experiences are you looking forward to in the future together?

How to End a Love Letter

You've spent a few paragraphs reminding your love of all of the good times you've shared together and why they're so special. Now it's time to conclude your letter with a statement and sign off that leaves them with a full heart. This is where you should go big, dig deep and make sure they know just how much they mean to you before they tuck your note away somewhere for safe keeping. If you're in a serious relationship, tell them what your hopes for your mutual future are. If you're about to walk down the aisle, reaffirm how much you're looking forward to forever with them, because they truly have your whole heart. And if you're writing to a crush, this is where you should make your big date pitch—you can even add a cheeky "check 'yes,' 'no' or 'maybe'" for a touch of 1990s romcom cuteness.

As far as how to sign a love letter goes, feel free to keep it simple with "Yours" or "All my love." We also love a flirty "XO," if your message leans more lighthearted. You can also take a page out of the pop culture book and use a romantic quote from their favorite novel, TV show or film. We're partial to the "Ever mine, ever thine, ever ours," sign off from Mr. Big on "Sex and the City" (by way of Beethoven). Here are some examples of how to end a heart-touching love letter:

You make the world around you more beautiful.

You are the love of my life—always and forever.

All my love,

My love, I will do all I can to keep you laughing, smiling and safe every day.

Eternally yours,

Two brides read love letters from one another on their wedding day.

Now that you've got some cute love letter ideas from our advice above, it's time to see our tips in action. Check out some examples of short notes using our love letter template, so you can see exactly how to write a letter to someone you love, someone you're dating or just someone you're crushing on.

To Your Crush

First off, I'm so lucky to have you in my life. I always knew we'd be good friends since the first time we met, reaching for the same muffin at the campus coffee shop, and now we have enough fun memories together to fill a book series. The way you send me good morning memes always starts my day off right and makes me think of how much I love your laugh, how it makes everyone in the room crack a smile. I admire your drive, too. You make me want to be the best person I can be.

All that said—I'm really into you, in a "more than a friend" way. I know we were planning on catching a movie this weekend, but would you be down to make it an official date? Check "yes," "no" or "maybe" below.

To Someone You're Dating

I can't believe it's been one year together already! It feels like time is moving even faster than when we were running to escape that surprise rain storm while walking the beach last summer (and we were definitely sprinting at the speed of light to get back to the house). With you, every day seems like an adventure, every laugh sounds like a symphony and every hug feels like heaven.

I've loved you more and more each day—all 365 of them—and can say with full confidence that I can see you by my side in the future, an incredibly bright future.

You have my heart,

To Your Fiancé

To My Beloved Future Husband ,

I'm just writing to say I love you. Why wait for a special occasion to say it when you make every day feel like a holiday? My heart skips a beat each time your dimples pop out when you smile and swells with love every time I hear your keys jingling outside the front door when you're home from work.

I am counting down the days until we meet at the altar, walking away hand-in-hand as husbands. You're the still point in an ever-turning world.

To Your Spouse

My One and Only,

Happy Valentine's Day! What'll this be, our 15th one together? We must've eaten over 10 tons of chocolate truffles together over all of those years. You make me feel so loved each and every day and I will do everything in my power to make you feel just as supported, reassured and unabashedly special.

You still give me butterflies. And I wouldn't want to go through life with anyone else. I am yours—now and always. I love you so much, my forever valentine.

Your adoring spouse,

Couple smiling and holding a just because gift

How to write a love letter.

Love letter with flowers

Really? A love letter? Yes, really. Sure, in this day and age, your options for how to say “I love you” are endless. You can text it. You can email it. You can say it face to face. You can write it in flour on the countertop, take a photo, and post it to Instagram. You can scribble a love note on a napkin and tuck it in a lunch bag. If you’ve got the courage, you could even write a song and serenade your sweetie.

Inspired? Create and share by tagging @hallmarkstores .

And all of those are great. You should definitely keep (or start) doing them to remind your love how much they mean. But when you really want to get your partner’s attention, there’s another tool to consider adding to your I love you repertoire: the good old-fashioned love letter.

Writing a love letter is the kind of gesture we 21st-century types don’t make every day—and that’s exactly what makes it so special. It’s something a little out of the day-to-day…unexpected…above and beyond. Odds are good your partner is going to want to read, reread, and hang onto it for a good long while. Love letters are just that meaningful.

Of course, the fact that letter writing is less common nowadays also means many of us are less than confident about how to write a love letter. (Is it a weird thing to do? How do I even start?) If that sounds like you, then read on for some helpful love letter writing tips.

Why Write a Love Letter

Putting pen to paper gives you space to really open up, explore, and expand on what’s in your heart. That can be just the thing for when your feelings are so strong, you just know it’s going to take some extra time, thought, and heartfelt words to express all you’re feeling. A love letter gives you a chance to dive deeper and communicate things that can be hard to say face to face or capture in a text…even one with lots of heart emojis.

When to Send a Love Letter

Here’s the short answer: Whenever you’ve got some saved-up affection, appreciation, and admiration to express to the one you love. To expand on that just a little, here’s a list of specific times perfect for a love letter:

  • Official occasions: Valentine’s Day, your love’s birthday, Christmas, Mother’s or Father’s Day (if your partner is a parent), Independence Day (if you want to start some fireworks), or any meaningful holiday, really.
  • Significant dates for your relationship: Wedding anniversary, anniversary of first date, engagement, the day you met, or any other date that has special meaning for the two of you.
  • When things are great: A love letter when things are going well is a chance to appreciate your partner for all they to keep your relationship strong.
  • When things are not as great: A love letter when things are tough is an opportunity to reset, remind, and apologize (if needed). It’s a chance to focus on the positive and recall happier times together, and most importantly, to express optimism in your future together, in spite of hard circumstances.
  • A random Tuesday: Or Monday, or Wednesday, or Thursday, or…in other words, just because. A love letter from the heart can make any old day feel like an occasion. And sometimes, it’s the out-of-the-blue, utterly unexpected love letter that means the most…and that goes the furthest toward keeping a relationship strong.

How to Start a Love Letter

Materials Nice stationery and a quality pen can add an appealing touch of significance and permanence to your love letter, and in the long run, they’ll help it stand the test of time. But if a sheet of notebook paper feels more like you, or more in keeping with the personality of your relationship, then by all means, get writing. The key is not to let your momentary lack of the perfect paper keep you from even starting. On the other hand, if you do want to go fancier with your materials, keep in mind that pencil stubs and notebook paper can still be handy for…

Writing a Rough Draft That’s right—rough drafts are not just for school essays, but for any important piece of writing, love letters most definitely included. Your rough draft might be as simple as a brainstormed list of lovable things about your partner in the notes app on your phone. Or it could be a fully fleshed-out practice letter you draft out on your computer or on scratch paper. Once again, go with the approach that feels most like you.

Top-of-Page Details Date your letter: Before diving in to the body of your letter, start off by writing the date near the top right of your first page. This is more than just a letter-writing convention—it also helps create a record of your relationship. When your love rereads the letter years from now, they will know this is a snapshot of your passion at this particular point in time.

Salutation: The word sounds formal, but in truth, the salutation is highly intimate. It’s the “Dear Joe,” or “Hey, Babe:” just above the body of your letter. For a newer relationship, you might stick to a simple “Dear Jane,” but for a more established love, here are some more passionate possibilities:

  • Darling (Jill), My Darling (John), My Darling Girl, My Love,
  • Dearest (Jack), My Dearest (Joanne),
  • My Wonderful (Jim), My Beautiful (Jess),
  • Hello, Gorgeous: or Hi, Babe:
  • Dear Sunshine, Dear [insert pet name here],

What to Say in the Body of Your Love Letter

There are no hard-and-fast rules for what a love letter should say, except that it should sound like you, including your voice, your personality, your sense of humor, etc. In other words, you should feel absolutely free to write from the heart; however, if you could use a little help getting started, here are some ideas and guidelines.

State a “Why” Start off by mentioning why you’re writing. This could mean anything from referring to the occasion, to saying you’ve been thinking about your partner:

  • Occasion: On our first anniversary, I just wanted to remind you how lucky I feel…
  • Just because: You know I love you every day, but today, I felt like putting it in writing….
  • Miss you: I miss you seeing your face…
  • Appreciation: Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about all you do for us…
  • Compliment: Just so you know, you take my breath away…
  • Tough time: Hey, I know things haven’t been the best between us lately. That’s why I want to make sure you know
  • New love: Just wanted to tell you that I’m having the best time with you, and I can’t wait to…
  • Thinking of you: You’re on my mind right now…

Go Into Detail Go on to add some specifics that could only come from you:

  • List things you love about your partner: The more specific, the better—I love the way your eyes crinkle when you laugh, instead of just I love your laugh. Getting specific shows you really know your partner.
  • Be sensual: All day long, I look forward to the thrill of being back in your strong arms…I love the feel of your soft lips on mine…
  • But don’t be R-rated: Imagine that your adult child or grandchild might someday stumble across this letter. It’s okay to make them blush, but try not to make them say, “Eeeeewwww!”
  • Get physical: It’s great to admire your partner’s sparkly blue eyes or rock-hard abs…
  • But try to balance it out: I adore your offbeat sense of humor…I’m constantly amazed by your ability to fix anything…Or whatever else you happen to love about who your partner really is.
  • Share a memory/Tell a story: I knew you were the one for me the moment you…I was just thinking about our trip to San Diego—the one where I lost my glasses…
  • Talk about “us”: I love this life we share…I feel like you and I are a perfect fit…I’m so grateful for what we have together. Thanks for sharing it with me…

How to Wrap Up a Love Letter

Sign It You’ll want to end your letter with some real passion, so consider using one of these closings before signing your name

  • All my love,
  • Love always,
  • Forever yours,
  • Passionately,
  • Gratefully,
  • All my heart,
  • Always and forever,
  • Hugs and kisses,
  • Under your spell,
  • With all my love on (Valentine’s Day) and always,

Seal It Beyond just the envelope, here are some additional ways to “seal” a love letter.

  • With a kiss (lipstick optional)
  • With a spritz of your signature scent
  • With an enclosure (poem, quote, concert tickets, pressed flower, paper heart, candy, etc.)
  • With a fancy wax seal or embossed sticker
  • With your awesome origami skills in place of an envelope (hand-delivery only)
  • With ribbon or twine tied in a bow

Deliver It Almost any delivery method you choose will add an extra element of surprise. If you get in the habit of writing love letters, you can try them all…and invent some new ones of your own.

  • Mail to your partner’s home or place of work (It can be surprisingly fun to get mail from someone you live with or see every day.)
  • In their bag, purse, or briefcase
  • On the driver’s seat of their car
  • On their pillow
  • On the bathroom vanity
  • Face-to-face

Prepare for Smiles, Hugs, Kisses…

Long or short, heartfelt or humorous, if you write from the heart, with genuine affection and appreciation, your partner is going to love and cherish your letter. The thought you put into it may seem like a little thing, but it’s one of those little things that can add up over time to keep a romance going strong.

How to Write a Love Letter to Your Partner

love letter essays

Can you remember the last time you sat down with a pen and paper to handwrite a letter to your significant other? If the answer is no, you’re definitely not alone. Living in the era of DMs and heart emojis, it’s easy to forget how one of the most treasured ways to say "I love you" is still a good old-fashioned letter. Whether you’re dating , engaged , or have been together forever, letting your partner know how much they mean to you with a tangible note is always a swoon-worthy move .

“The vulnerable authenticity of a love letter is what will take [your partner’s] breath away,” explains couples counselor and writer Donna Keehn. We caught up with her to learn how to write a love letter from the heart and find inspiration.

Meet the Expert

Donna Keehn is a marriage and family therapist and author based in San Diego, California.

“Remember,” she says, “your love letter is not meant to compete with all of the other love letters that exist ... [and] as long as the words expressed are sincere, it will be absolutely perfect for the person lucky enough to receive it.” Ready to get started? Below is everything you need to know to write a love letter.

What to Include in Your Love Letter

1. start with a meaningful greeting .

“With a love letter, the greeting can immediately reflect the depth of your connection and love,” Keehn shares. “But just because you’re being vulnerable and romantic doesn’t mean your tone has to be strictly formal.” Addressing your partner with a cherished nickname like ‘Sweetie Pie,’ ‘Love Nugget,’ or ‘Buttercup' can be just as touching as something like 'My Love.' Also, when in doubt, simply starting with your partner’s first name is intimate in its own way.

2. Recall Romantic Moments

Reflecting on and sharing specific moments when you “knew” you loved someone is a beautiful start to the heart of the letter. Keehn suggests asking yourself, “Did you experience a moment where you realized all of the ways having this human being in your life has changed you [and] your life for the better? Think about these shared moments in a timeline fashion and capture the experiences and emotions in free-flow writing.”

3. Write Out the “Why’s”

Instead of going vague with statements such as “I love your personality,” Keehn encourages digging deeper and exploring the “why” behind what it is you love about someone. Without filtering yourself, try to articulate “ why you love their personality, their character, their kindness, their generosity, their touch...” Capture that magic!

4. Close With Candor

This is the time to express how it really feels now that this person is in your life. “Don’t be shy!” Keehn laughs, “Put yourself fully out there at the end and toss insecurities to the wind.” As for the final line itself, you can of course never go wrong in baring it all through a simple, powerful ‘I love you.’

Tips for Getting Started (and Finishing Strong!)

Don’t know where to start, or having trouble finding a creative flow? “Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and think about your partner,” Keehn says, “[and] let your heart and head fill up with their presence.” By creating a safe space for yourself, thoughts, feelings, and words will start to bubble up without judgment. When they do, just write without worrying about how it sounds. Poetic phrases , concrete statements, and sweet nothings are all perfect. “If you’re feeling stuck,” she adds, “turn to outside inspiration, such as existing love letters, marriage vows, and, of course, Shakespeare, to guide the way.”

Take Your Time

For a love letter that doesn’t feel trivial or forced, Keehn suggests going slow and piecing it together a bit at a time. “The vast majority of us want to rush through something when it feels awkward or outside of our comfort zone,” she says, “but when you think about it, just about everything we do, even really big things, are done in small steps…”

Pick a Personalized Medium

Yay, you’ve written the content of your letter! A fun and, often overlooked, component of the letter itself, is what you write it on. “Let yourself have fun!” Keehn says, “The love letter doesn’t have to be on a fancy piece of stationary to be special.”

If your partner is a teacher, consider writing the letter on notebook paper and hiding it in their binder. Or maybe a chef? Create a “menu” front page that opens up to the letter inside. The possibilities are, truly, endless.

Iconic Love Letter Examples

To leave you feeling inspired, we’ve rounded up some of the most iconic love letters of all time.

Johnny Cash to his wife June:

“Happy Birthday Princess,

We get old and get used to each other. We think alike. We read each other’s minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes we take each other for granted.

But once in a while, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much. Happy Birthday Princess - John”

Composer John Cage to Merce Cunningham:

“Today is beautiful and I am dreaming of you and enigma and how we are together today: your words in my ears making [me] limp and taut by turns with delight. Oh, I am sure we could use each other today.

I like to believe that you are writing my music now: God knows I’m not doing it, because it simply seems to happen. The pretissimo is incredible the way you are and is perhaps a song and description about you … Pardon the intrusion, but when in September will you be back? I would like to measure my breath in relation to the air between us.”

Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera:

Nothing compares to your hands, nothing like the green-gold of your eyes. My body is filled with you for days and days. You are the mirror of the night. The violent flash of lightning. The dampness of the earth. The hollow of your armpits is my shelter. My fingers touch your blood.

All my joy is to feel life spring from your flower-fountain that mine keeps to fill all the paths of my nerves which are yours.”

A Simple Guide To Writing Handwritten Love Letters

love letter essays

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. Lao Tzu

Writing captivating love letters is definitely an art that can spice up your relationship or bring back the romantic flare you have been missing. Creating love letters is a great way to make your special someone feel loved and appreciated. Check out the tips below on how to write the perfect romantic love letter.

Why a Handwritten Letter is Better Than a Text

Handwritten love letters have been utilized as romantic gestures for centuries . However, as the digital age has emerged, the art of writing love letters has been lost to some degree. While sending your partner or romantic interest emails, texts, or social media messages are good and fun; it just doesn’t have the same romantic essence as a handwritten letter.

When to Send a Love Letter

If you have feelings for someone, it’s the perfect time to send a love letter. Whether it’s just a crush, a budding new relationship, or your 50th year of marriage, you can always send a love letter. Need some creative ideas for delivery? How about surprising your love with a romantic letter on their pillow, mailing your letter the good ‘ol fashioned way, or even posting it anonymously on Imperfect Ink and sharing the link with them.

Love Letters to Crushes

While sending a love letter to a crush is a bit more nerve-racking than to someone you are already in a relationship with, it doesn’t mean you should avoid it. If you like someone, let them know. If you’re looking to grab your crush’s attention, a romantic letter will certainly do the trick. If you feel the connection goes both ways with your crush, go ahead and write the letter. Like most things in life, you will never know unless you try.

How to Write a Love Letter

There is an art to any type of writing, including creating beautifully worded love letters. However, art is never a one size fits all situation. As you start to create your love letter, remember to always utilize the writing style that feels best to you. This will ensure that you feel comfortable as you write, while also showcasing your own unique personality and voice. Take your time with your writing process, and don’t be afraid to create some rough drafts as you make your way to the final product. If you’re stuck and are looking for a basic guideline for writing a love letter, check out the five formatting tips below.

The first step in writing a captivating love letter is to start with a romantic greeting. Use a greeting that is romantic, cute, or even quirky. Maybe, “To my Darling” or “Dear Buttercup.” The most important thing is to choose a greeting that fits your relationship dynamic and to choose something the person you’re writing the letter to will love.

In the first paragraph of your letter, be sure to share why you’re writing to them. Be open and honest as you draft your thoughts. Let your partner know why you love them and why you just couldn’t wait to express these feelings to them. Think about starting the letter off with a quote about love,  and then going from there.

In the second paragraph, you really get into the heart of the letter. This is where you pour your heart out onto the page. Be yourself as you tell your love interest how you feel about them. Don’t be afraid to incorporate sentimental or flowery language into your letter. However, if humor is more your style, that can still be incorporated as well. The most important thing is to create a beautiful love letter that makes your partner feel special, while also highlighting your true personality.

As you wrap up your letter in the final paragraph, look to the future of your relationship. Express to them a final time how much they mean to you and what you want your future together to look like. If you want to spend the rest of your life with them, share that sentiment as you close your letter.

The last step in creating your love letter is to sign it with a loving signature, similar to that of the romantic greeting you started the message with. Add a bit of extra romance with a signed letter that ends with, “With all my love always” or “Yours Forever.” Finally, put your letter in a pretty envelope and give it to your loved one.

The Best Romantic Love Letters Ever Written

By HowAboutWe and Glamour

Writing romantic love letters can feel like a prehistoric practice in an age where we classify a 2 a.m. “you up?” text as “romance.” But there was once a time in our not so distance past where eloquent prose professing a burning affection (and written by hand!) was the norm. And not just the stuff of sensitive, heterosexual artist types either. History is filled with achingly romantic love letters between two women and between two men, from former kings, presidents, and war generals, and to between two best friends.

For a little inspiration to warm your cold Tinder-hardened heart, we've rounded up the 10 most romantic love letters of all time, from George H.W. Bush's sweet notes to his wife Barbara, to the steamy letters between Virginia Woolf and her female lover. Here: A master class in affectionate prose.

1. Ernest Hemingway to Marlene Dietrich

Nobel Prize-winning American novelist Ernest Hemingway was a prolific, confident writer, famed for his stoic masculinity. But in his letters to actress Marlene Dietrich, he shows a more vulnerable side. Hemingway wrote Dietrich, his best friend, approximately 30 letters between 1949 to 1959.  "I can't say how every time I ever put my arms around you I felt that I was home," he wrote in one. (Dietrich's daughter, Maria Riva, maintained in a New York Times article that the two were merely close friends.)

2. Napoleon to Joséphine

While known for his ruthlessness as a ruler, French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte also possessed a softer side. In letters to his wife, Joséphine, the military leader reveals a vulnerability not found in his autocratic approach to expanding the French empire. Before you swoon: he divorced her when she could not have children. But Napoleon still continued to write to Joséphine for years after their separation. In one particular letter, penned while Napoleon was commanding the French army near Italy a few months after their marriage, he expressed how much he missed his wife.

"Since I left you, I have been constantly depressed. My happiness is to be near you. Incessantly I live over in my memory your caresses, your tears, your affectionate solicitude. The charms of the incomparable Joséphine kindle continually a burning and a glowing flame in my heart. When, free from all solicitude, all harassing care, shall I be able to pass all my time with you, having only to love you, and to think only of the happiness of so saying, and of proving it to you?"

3. Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera

It's no secret that Frida Kahlo and her husband, fellow artist Diego Rivera, had a tempestuous relationship, but in her love letters to Rivera, you see only an intense love. Kahlo's letters to Rivera stretch across the 27-year span of the couple's relationship, and underscore the powerful if tumultuous connection the two shared. In one letter from The Diary of Frida Kahlo: An Intimate Self-Portrait , Kahlo wrote of that deep emotional intimacy.

"Nothing compares to your hands, nothing like the green-gold of your eyes. My body is filled with you for days and days. You are the mirror of the night. The violent flash of lightning. The dampness of the earth. The hollow of your armpits is my shelter. My fingers touch your blood. All my joy is to feel life spring from your flower-fountain that mine keeps to fill all the paths of my nerves which are yours."

4. Georgia O'Keeffe to Alfred Stieglitz

Another artist who excelled at writing spicy love letters: famed painter, Georgia O'Keeffe. Over the course of her 30-year romance with celebrated photographer Alfred Stieglitz, O'Keeffe exchanged more than 5,000 letters (that's roughly 25,000 pages) on everything from the mundane ongoings of her daily life to some of her more passionate encounters with Stieglitz. In all, the letters show a far more seductive side to the artist than her flowery paintings may initially suggest.

"Dearest — my body is simply crazy with wanting you — If you don't come tomorrow — I don't see how I can wait for you — I wonder if your body wants mine the way mine wants yours — the kisses — the hotness — the wetness — all melting together — the being held so tight that it hurts — the strangle and the struggle."

5. Beethoven to his "Immortal Beloved"

The identity of Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved,” to whom the iconic composer and pianist wrote a number of letters in 1812, is still largely a mystery. But the letters themselves paint a very vivid picture of an epic love story. Many historians believe Beethoven's "Beloved" to have been a diplomat’s daughter, named Antonie Brentano, to whom the composer dedicated his "Diabelli Variations Op. 120." In one of his letters found after his death—which was famously quoted in the Sex and the City movie—he wrote:

"Though still in bed, my thoughts go out to you, my Immortal Beloved, Be calm-love me-today-yesterday-what tearful longings for you-you-you-my life-my all-farewell. Oh continue to love me-never misjudge the most faithful heart of your beloved. Ever thine. Ever mine. Ever ours."

6. George H. W. Bush to Barbara Bush

Late U.S. President George H. W. Bush was surprisingly romantic in his letters to his wife, Barbara. In 1942, on the heels of World War II, Bush enlisted in the Navy, and while stationed overseas, wrote letters to both his parents and to his then-girlfriend, Barbara Pierce. To this day, only one love letter to Barbara remains from the former president's time overseas, as Barbara reportedly lost the majority of her letters in a move after the pair were married. In the surviving letter, Bush joyfully explained how he envisioned the couple's future.

"This should be a very easy letter to write—words should come easily and in short it should be simple for me to tell you how desperately happy I was to open the paper and see the announcement of our engagement, but somehow I can't possibly say all in a letter I should like to. I love you, precious, with all my heart and to know that you love me means my life. How often I have thought about the immeasurable joy that will be ours some day. How lucky our children will be to have a mother like you..."

7. Ronald Reagan to Nancy Reagan

Another former President whose romantic writings are worth mentioning: Ronald Reagan. In a letter to his wife, Nancy, in 1972, prior to their 20th anniversary, Reagan (who, at the time and prior to his presidency, was serving as the Governor of California) penned a romantic note to his wife expressing his undying love for her, and explaining that he never wants to leave her side.

"The important thing is I don't want to be without you for the next 20 years, or 40, or however many there are. I've gotten very used to being happy and I love you very much indeed."

8. Oscar Wilde to Lord Alfred Douglas

In June of 1891, Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde met Lord Alfred “Bosie” Douglas , a then-21-year-old Oxford undergraduate and talented poet, who would come to be the author’s muse and lover. In fact, it was during the course of their affair that Wilde wrote Salomé and the four great plays which, to this day, are the cornerstone of his literary legacy. Unfortunately their relationship was not accepted at the time and the duo carried on their affair in secret. Wilde's surviving letters, luckily, make the enduring power of their love clear.

“Everyone is furious with me for going back to you, but they don't understand us. I feel that it is only with you that I can do anything at all,” Wilde wrote. "Do remake my ruined life for me, and then our friendship and love will have a different meaning to the world. I wish that when we met at Rouen we had not parted at all. There are such wide abysses now of space and land between us. But we love each other."

9. Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn

The King of England for 38 years, Henry VIII wrote his lover, Anne Boleyn , a collection of secret, romantic letters which still survive today. Henry was a despotic ruler with six wives—two of whom he beheaded, including Anne. But he was also noted as a great romantic, as shown in the letters Henry wrote Anne during their years-long courtship.

“But if you please to do the office of a true loyal mistress and friend, and to give up yourself body and heart to me, who will be, and have been, your most loyal servant, (if your rigour does not forbid me) I promise you that not only the name shall be given you, but also that I will take you for my only mistress, casting off all others besides you out of my thoughts and affections, and serve you only,” he wrote. "I beseech you to give an entire answer to this my rude letter, that I may know on what and how far I may depend. And if it does not please you to answer me in writing, appoint some place where I may have it by word of mouth, and I will go thither with all my heart. No more, for fear of tiring you."

10. Vita Sackville-West to Virginia Woolf

Celebrated writer Virginia Woolf and English poet Vita Sackville-West exchanged a series of love letters to each another that were, unsurprisingly, beautifully written. But it was perhaps a letter from Vita, sent from Milan on January 21, 1927, that offers the clearest, most unguarded, glimpse into their love story. Unlike Woolf's flowery, ornate prose, West is far more straightforward: "I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way."

“I am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia,” she wrote. "I composed a beautiful letter to you in the sleepless nightmare hours of the night, and it has all gone: I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way. And I don’t really resent it."

Everyone seems to use text messages and emails to communicate to each other these days. So there’s something about a good, old-fashioned love letter—especially a handwritten one—that makes it a rare and special treat. Love letters are keepsakes that can be held, reread and cherished. They are the perfect gift for someone you love. Writing a love letter is not hard but it takes some time and contemplation to express your true feelings.

Preparing to Write Your Letter

Step 1 Set the mood.

  • Maybe there is a song that reminds you of the person you love. Find that song and play it while you think.
  • You can also bring a picture of your love with you to look at.

Step 2 Reflect on your feelings.

  • Think about what your significant other is to you? Your best friend? Your soul mate? Make a list of everything you appreciate and adore about your partner.
  • Now create sentences with your list. “I love how soft your hands feel in mine,” or “I love the way you look at me and let me know everything will be all right,” or perhaps, “Your smile and easy laughter can make my whole day.”
  • Don’t just focus on physical characteristics. This can make the letter feel shallow and incomplete. You don’t want to completely avoid physical attraction in your letter either, though, because then it can feel a little too platonic. Love letters are meant to be tastefully sensual and respectful—not necessarily erotic.

Step 4 Use memories to guide you.

  • Think about the story of when you two first met or felt sparks fly. There was a moment in time when you knew you wanted to be with that person. Write down that story and everything you remember about it—from the clothing they were wearing to the place it happened and how nervous or confident you felt about approaching them.

Step 5 Think about the future.

Drafting the Love Letter

Step 1 Write a rough draft.

  • Take your time and don’t rush. If this is the first love letter you have ever written, then keep that in mind. There is a learning curve for everything, so accept that you may have some difficulties or make mistakes.
  • Use your own voice to express how you feel. Don’t imitate the way someone else writes or speaks. You want this message to be uniquely yours and to reach your partner the way only you can. It must be sincere and reflect the real you on paper.
  • Keep your partner in mind as you write your letter as well as the level of your relationship. Declaring your love to someone for the first time will probably be a little different on paper than writing a letter to your wife of 20 years.
  • Remember to state your love somewhere in the letter. A simple "I love you" works just fine.

Step 2 Start at the beginning.

  • Don’t insult your lover or depreciate yourself or your feelings in the letter. Be confident about how you feel and what you are saying to avoid confusion. [5] X Research source

Step 3 Write the body.

  • The goal of the love letter is to express very deep feelings that you have a hard time conveying in person. Take this opportunity to say more than you usually say and to take it to a deeper level. Use the ideas you jotted down earlier to guide you.
  • If you don’t write poetry, consider including a poem from a favorite poet or a quote that expresses more of what you’re trying to say. Always give the writer credit to avoid looking like you tried to steal it and trick your partner into believing it was yours.
  • If you want to be cheesy, go ahead. Just be authentic, and if your partner loves you, he or she will love your letter too.

Step 4 Be positive.

  • A good way to keep your letter positive is to talk about how you feel right now. Yes, you want to go over those special stories about how you fell in love but you also want to be sure your partner knows that you still feel strongly for them or even more so.
  • Try something like, “Now, a decade later, I still get butterflies when you smile at me,” or "I love you more now than I ever have before."

Step 5 Reiterate your commitment.

Finishing Your Letter

Step 1 Choose nice paper or stationery.

  • If you don’t have any stationery, a piece of plain or notebook paper will do fine as well. The message is definitely more important than the type of paper you write on.
  • You can make regular paper look old or even make your own paper if you want to do something fun.
  • Use either a black or brown ink to keep the writing grounded and classy-looking. Avoid “teacher colors” like blue, green, and red that will make it look like you’re marking up a homework assignment.

Step 2 Use an intimate salutation.

  • If you want to be a bit more romantic, try a simple but passionate farewell. "With undying love" or "Forever yours" can work well.

Step 6 Add a personal touch.

  • Alternatively, roll the letter up like a scroll and tie it closed with a piece of nice ribbon or string.
  • A romantic stamp, such as the Garden Bouquet stamp, can add a lovely embellishment to your envelope. If you want to, put the stamp upside down, which customarily means, "I love you."

Step 8 Surprise your love.

  • You may want to wait a little while before you send out your letter. After you have finished, put it away and check it before it is time to send it out. Look for errors and make sure there is nothing that you will regret later in there. Then send it out, and be prepared for a passionate response to your labor of love.

Step 9 Write other love letters.

love letter essays

Back in the day, love letters weren’t considered something unusual. Men declared their love with handwritten letters. Ladies sent them to their loved ones, waiting for them to return from wars. The digital era has made our communication easier and more convenient. When was the last time you took a pen and wrote to somebody? Admit it, it’s much more convenient to print the text and instantly send it in one click via email. Still, note there is something deep and fascinating in the handwritten lines and love that you can’t convey through a standard message via email. Even if you aren’t used to writing a love letter on paper, it doesn’t really matter. More importantly, the letter is written from the heart, even if it is electronic. We’ve collected good examples of beautiful and sincere love letters for all occasions. Use them to surprise and delight your loved one or be inspired to write your own love letter. One thing we know for sure – he or she will be completely enchanted after receiving your love note.

Thank you for everything you have done for me — and thank you for helping me grow into the woman I have become.
  • Dear, Every time I see your name pop on my screen, I can’t help but grin. You have really touched my heart, and you make every day brighter with your comments, thoughts, opinions and the way you share them all with me. I wonder if we could talk like that in person – share those thoughts, that laughter and that fun together. The truth is, I think I’m falling in love with you, and if you feel the same way, I think we should get together and see where this relationship goes. Hopefully more than your friend

Every time I think about you, I can’t help but smile. You’re the reason I smile all the time now. I love you, Honey. I heard that you cherish everything between you and me. That’s really great. You’re stuck with me. You better remember that!

  • “Since I left you, I have been constantly depressed. My happiness is to be near you. Incessantly I live over in my memory your caresses, your tears, your affectionate solicitude. Your charms kindle continually a burning and a glowing flame in my heart. When, free from all solicitude, all harassing care, shall I be able to pass all my time with you, having only to love you, and to think only of the happiness of so saying, and of proving it to you?” Napoleon
  • “Nothing compares to your hands, nothing like the green-gold of your eyes. My body is filled with you for days and days. You are the mirror of the night. The violent flash of lightning. The dampness of the earth. The hollow of your armpits is my shelter. My fingers touch your blood. All my joy is to feel life spring from your flower-fountain that mine keeps to fill all the paths of my nerves which are yours.” Frida Kahlo
  • “Everyone is furious with me for going back to you, but they don’t understand us. I feel that it is only with you that I can do anything at all. Do remake my ruined life for me, and then our friendship and love will have a different meaning to the world. I wish that when we met at Rouen we had not parted at all. There are such wide abysses now of space and land between us. But we love each other.” Oscar Wilde

How much I love you letters

In the era of text messages and hasty e-mail, “I love you” letters, especially handwritten ones, can be considered a rare and special gift. Believe us, your sweetheart will appreciate this gift and will reread the lines of your message filled with love and tenderness for a long time.

  • You have no idea how you’ve changed my life. I used to feel so alone and afraid in this world. I didn’t believe I could find someone who could truly love me for who I am. I never thought that I could find that one person who can revive my faith in everything. And yet here you are, the pillar of strength that keeps me going, the light that guides me towards a better future. You can’t imagine how much of an impact you’ve made in my life. I can only hope to do the same for you. I want to be that person for you if you’d let me. I love you so much that I won’t stop until I’ve made sure that you’re the happiest man on earth.
  • To my soulmate, I love you. I love you. I love you. I can never say those three words enough and unfortunately I feel like you haven’t heard them at all lately. I’m sorry about that. I’ve been so overwhelmed with work that I haven’t had the time to give you much attention, but that will change soon. You know why? Because I love you. I love you. I love you.
  • Darling dearest, I tell you how much I love you all the time, but I never really explain why I feel that way, so I’m going to do that now. I love the way your voice sounds when you say my name. I love the way your smile tilts when you’re trying not to laugh. I love the way your kisses feel against my neck. I love the way your voice sounds, even if you hate it. I love the man you were when I met you and I love the man I can see you growing into. I love every version of you. I love every messy piece.

Cute love letter ideas

You don’t need to be serious to talk about feelings. Love letters don’t need to be too long, complex and filled with banal hackneyed phrases. Just be yourself when you write a romantic note, express your own thoughts and feelings and your loved one will appreciate it. We offer you some cute ideas of the love letters!

  • Baby, I wish I could be there to help you relax. I wish I could take away all the tiredness you feel and replace it with joy and happiness. I wish I could help soothe your mind. But in the meantime, while we’re not in each other’s presence, I hope this letter is enough to lift your spirits. Always remember that I’m thinking of you every moment of the day. And if only thinking about you could help you feel energized and awake, I’m sure you’ll never feel tired again!
  • My dearest (does that sound too corny?) I wanted to write you a love letter, but it’s going to sound more like a thank you note. Maybe it’s both. I want to thank you for washing the dishes when I forget my dirty ones are still in the sink. I want to thank you for agreeing to watch shitty reality shows with me and letting me pick the songs during car rides even though we have completely different tastes. I want to thank you for all of the hugs you have offered me to squeeze the sadness out and all of the pep talks you have given me when I doubted myself. Most of all, I want to thank you for existing. Thank you for being my partner. Thank you for being my best friend in the world.
  • Honey, I don’t want to wait until your birthday or our anniversary to remind you how much you mean to me. Hint: You mean everything. I know I don’t always say how I’m feeling because I have a nasty habit of keeping my heart guarded, but I hope you realize how much I care about you. I never thought it was possible to have this much love for someone, I never thought my heart could handle it. I know there are days when we argue and don’t see eye-to-eye, but you are the only person I would want to have those arguments with. (Besides, the make up sex isn’t half bad).
  • Cutie pie, You are lucky you’re cute because you drive me insane. Even when you forget to put your folded laundry into their drawers or leave the kitty litter dirty for days at a time (sound familiar?), I still want to throw you against the wall and have my way with you. Is that weird? Or does that just mean I’m madly in love? Maybe it’s both.

Long meaningful love letters

If you find it difficult to write a love letter by yourself, pick up one of these ready-made beautiful and meaningful love letters. Choose exactly the words that have long wanted to say to him or her!

  • I hate it when we have to be apart. It’s the most unnatural thing. When we first met, I knew that I had found my soulmate, and yet here we are being kept apart by circumstances. But I just want to look at the bright side of this. When this is over and we can be together again, we can say that this made our relationship stronger. We can say that even distance is no match for the love between us. We can tell everyone that we’re stronger than those few miles between us. But as reassuring as that may be, we still need to face the fact that we’ll be apart for a while. I miss being with you and being around and kissing you. I’ll miss the sound of your laugh, and the way your head tilts back when you can’t hold back. I’ll miss holding your hand as we sit around and do nothing. I’ll miss it all, but that just makes me look forward even more to the day that I get to see you again in person. So until then, here’s a letter to get you by. I love you and I’ll see you soon.
  • Dear I know we’ve only known each other for a few months now, but I’ve just got to let you know how I feel. From the first day we met, it was like I’ve known you forever, and I’m kind of shy so that’s saying a lot. You were just so nice, and you made me feel at ease right away. That’s the kind of guy you are, though, nice to everyone. I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say anything mean about anyone, and that’s kind of rare among our friends, don’t you think? Anyway, it just makes me realize how special you truly are. So, I’m kind of nervous about saying this, but here goes. I really like you. Not just as my friend, but as a guy that I’d like to be my boyfriend. Maybe I should have waited for you to say something first, but I just couldn’t wait any longer. I’ve wanted to tell you for weeks, but I didn’t have the courage until now. I hope you feel the same way about me. I’ll be sitting on the bleachers after school, and I hope you’ll meet me there.
  • I don’t know where I should start! Let me start by saying, I love you. I have loved you for as long as I can remember. I guess the first time I told you was when I realized how much you meant to me. We have known each other for years now. Once we got together, I couldn’t believe how good things were going. It was too good to be true. It was perfect in the beginning. I loved you, and you loved me. I felt like that’s the way it should still be. I know we’ve been through tough times. And because of that I think we have become stronger than we know. We have lasted a good while together, too. I’m so incredibly sorry for everything that I did wrong. I wish you could just tell me, and I would change it all. I want you to know that you are someone I will never ever forget. I loved you, and still love you, and will always love you, no matter what. We’ve been through a lot. But that love is still there. I hope you find happiness. I hope all your dreams come true. You deserve a lot.

Beautiful love letters

Who said that a love letter must be written by hand? You can boldly send it by email! Choose a beautiful love letter for your girlfriend or boyfriend from our collection, copy it and send. This is a great way to show your attention, to say that you miss him or her, congratulate on a holiday or once again remind him or her of your feelings.

  • My Love, There are a thousand ways to say I love you around the world, but only one way to prove it and that is by actions. You have proved that you love me unconditionally time and again. You were that one person who was by my side when all the world was against me. I have known ever since that day that you were the one for me. I try to love you and take care of you as much and as well as I can. I hope you know that I have the best intentions always, so forgive me if I ever hurt you or caused you pain. I love you for now until forever and will never leave your side.
  • My tenderness, my happiness, what words can I write for you? How strange that although my life’s work is moving a pen over paper, I don’t know how to tell you how I love, how I desire you. Such agitation — and such divine peace: melting clouds immersed in sunshine — mounds of happiness. And I am floating with you, in you, aflame and melting — and a whole life with you is like the movement of clouds, their airy, quiet falls, their lightness and smoothness, and the heavenly variety of outline and tint — my inexplicable love. I cannot express these cirrus-cumulus sensations.
  • Dear, Tonight is our senior prom, and I just know it’s going to be the most special night of our lives. How do I know that? Because the most special girl in the world is my date. I can’t wait to see how beautiful you look in your dress. I know you took a long time picking it out. I bought you a corsage to go with it, but you’ll have to wait until tonight to see it. One thing I know for sure, a lot of girls are going to get mad at their dates tonight when they can’t take their eyes off of you. Be prepared for an amazing evening, and know that I love you.
  • When we first met, you and I were both emerging from unhappy relationships, but we helped each through them. We confided in one another, we comforted one another, and we healed one another. We built strong trust and communication and, before long, we were deeply in love. I fall deeper in love with you every day. I can’t tell you how much you mean to me, or how much I love to just be with you. You make me smile and laugh out loud! You make me feel comfortable, confident, and protected. For the first time in my life, I feel whole and fully alive, and it’s all because of you. I love you!

The Poems That Taught Me How to Love

Lessons from Pablo Neruda’s mind-bending verse.

An illustration of two people.

By Nicholas Casey

My friend Ravi introduced me to the love poems of Pablo Neruda when we were teenagers. On the cover of the writer’s “Selected Poems,” Neruda stands wearing a checkered beret, his hands clasped, with the painted statue of a woman looming in the background. His eyes have the look of a man whose heart has been broken many times. “Tonight I can write the saddest lines,” begins one of the first poems in the collection. “I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.”

Listen to this article with reporter commentary

Not all of his poetry is so somber. I’m thinking now of the line “I want to do with you what spring does with the cherry trees.” On the page, Neruda is always mixing intense landscape imagery and the emotions they evoke in him, using nature as a transcendent metaphor for the erotic. But I wanted to read these lines out loud — and did so, ill-advisedly, to a girl I liked in Spanish class. Maybe I was drawn to Neruda because then his simple, straightforward verses were the only poetry I could understand in Spanish. With “Selected Poems,” I was learning the language, but I was hoping Neruda could teach me to talk to women, too.

When I turned 19, I was finally Neruda’s age when he published his first book of love poems. I was a college junior and longing to see Chile after years of Spanish classes. I came to Santiago as a study-abroad student in the summer of 2004. I knew South America was my place when I found an older woman collecting change on the metro while reciting Neruda’s 20th love poem. The other passengers mouthed the verses with her.

Finally, at the end of the term, I got a ticket to Patagonia, to see the southern landscapes that I had imagined while reading Neruda. “Ah vastness of pines, murmur of waves breaking,” read one, “Twilight falling in your eyes.” And yet, unlike in the poems, I had no muse, a fact cruelly highlighted by the waiter in Punta Arenas who told me I could not order the crab stew because it was only for two.

It was my last day in Ushuaia, and I was in the attic of the hostel where I was staying with the Neruda book in my bag when I met someone. She told me she was German and studied Latin American literature at the Free University of Berlin. That seemed to be enough to have signaled destiny to me. There were also the little coincidences that had poetry of their own. When we left town the next day, we were assigned seats together on the bus, as if by fate. It was an 11-hour ride, which included a short ferry over the Strait of Magellan, and we poured our hearts out to each other. When we got to Punta Arenas, we ran into the same waiter I saw when I was alone days before. He looked at her, then at me, and reached out to shake my hand, smiling.

We went to bed (separate ones: I was still a shy teenage poem reader), and I read her Neruda’s “The Queen”: “When you go through the streets/No one recognizes you./No one sees your crystal crown, no one looks/At the carpet of red gold/That you tread as you pass.”

By morning, I knew I had to do more than read something to her. But there was time only for a walk to the bus station and then my ride to the airport. She gave me a hug, and I got on the bus. Suddenly the bus was rolling out of the station and she was waving at it — and at that moment, my heart was breaking.

Finally I had some presence of mind: I went to the driver and said: “Please, stop the bus. I forgot something.” The driver stopped, and I got off to give her a long kiss. I looked her in the eyes, and then went to Santiago.

This, it seemed, had been the greatest accomplishment of my life to that point. In my journal, I documented it with my own Nerudian lines: “Walking to the bus was the feeling of being besieged on all sides by the perfect day, with the certainty that no matter how hard you step, that fragile perfection, crafted long ago by some distant genius, will keep giving you sure footing.”

The footing didn’t last long though. No texts came on my cellphone for a couple of weeks, and then she told me she had a boyfriend back in Germany named Jan.

“Tonight I can write the saddest lines,” goes the Neruda poem.

I’m all right now. As Robert Frost once wrote: “I shall be telling this with a sigh/Somewhere ages and ages hence.” Neruda’s poems feel more sentimental today than they did back then. I realize they belong to a time, long gone, when he and I were both 19 and still coming of age. When the idea of being a writer finally came to me, I was drawn less by the pangs of the heart and more to the suffering of wars and conflict, and became a foreign correspondent. In Madrid, where I live these days, I still have my copy of “Selected Poems.” Neruda’s face looks out timelessly from the cover. It gives me chills when I see that the same pages that were white when I first read them are yellowing after 20 years.

You give me strength when I feel weak. I know you are always there to support me, just like I will always be there for you. Knowing you have my back and I have yours fills me with joy and love. I’m so thankful for our relationship and how it has helped me get back on my feet.

You are the first thing I think of when I wake up and the last thing I think about before falling asleep. You consume my thoughts every day. All I want is to love you with my whole heart and give you the life you desire. I hope you know that I would give you the world if I could.

I may not be the best at expressing my emotions, but I just want you to know how much you mean to me. I love you unconditionally, forever.

Every time I look at you, I find more things to love about you. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me. I hope that you will be with me wherever I go in life. You have made me feel more supported and appreciated than I have in a long time.

If I listed all the reasons I’m thankful for you, you would be reading for a lifetime. So, instead, I’ll just tell you my favorite things about you.

I love how you make me feel and how you treat me with so much care and respect. I adore your smile, your beautiful eyes, and the way you light up a room. Most of all, I admire your hard-working nature and your beautiful soul.

When I look at you, I see not only my lover but also my best friend, my provider, and my protector. I believe with all of my heart that my soul was made to be with yours.

I hope that one day I’ll walk down the aisle and say, “I do.” I dream of the day we start a family of our own. Eventually, we’ll grow old together, but I can promise you that I’ll never get tired of being with you.

I know I don’t tell you enough, so I’m writing this letter to tell you how much I care for you. Whenever you hurt, I hurt too. If I could take away all your stress and pain, I would do it a million times over.

It makes me happy to see you happy. I would do anything to cheer you up. I know life can sometimes be hard, but you deserve all of the happiness in the world and more.

Even though we are miles apart , my love for you grows stronger every day. I miss your voice, your sweet touch, and your gentle smile, but I know that we'll be together again soon.

What keeps me going when the distance feels like too much to bear is knowing that you will always be there waiting for me. There is no other lover better for me than you are. Your love is worth waiting a lifetime for.

When I woke up this morning and saw you lying beside me, I couldn’t help but feel like I’m the luckiest girl in the world. When you hold me in your arms, I feel so safe and secure.

In all of my life, I have never experienced such a healthy and stable relationship. I know deep down in my heart that I can fully trust you. I am confident that you will never betray me, and I promise that I will never betray you.

I know you have been stressed lately. You are such a hard worker, and you want to please everyone around you. I wish I could take a load off your shoulders because I care deeply for you. Your well-being is my number one priority.

Even though I can’t take away your stress, I will be your rock and support no matter the circumstances. You can come to me with anything, and I will be there for you.

When I look back to the beginning of our relationship, I can’t believe that our love has blossomed into what it is now. I am so lucky to have someone so respectful, caring, and affectionate.

You are my best friend and the one I will love forever. You are truly my world, and I promise to spend every day appreciating you and this beautiful life we have together.

When I think about this beautiful life we are living together, my heart swells with pride and joy. I am so proud of the person you have grown into. Every day you become a better man and a better lover.

Because of that, I will work hard to be the best version of myself for you. You deserve all that I have to give and more, and I want to dedicate my life to making sure your dreams come true.

Hey, Babe, I hate how empty the bed feels without you. I've been staying up late because I can't seem to fall asleep on my side without you on yours. Everything reminds me of you, and it just makes me miss you more.

Darling, I've been trying to keep busy, but everything I do just reminds me of you. I went to our favorite café yesterday, and it wasn't the same alone. I miss your laugh and the way you make everything more fun.

Love, I know we said we could handle the distance, but it's harder than I thought. I miss having you around, hearing about your day, and just seeing your face. Can't wait until you're back and we can catch up on everything.

Hey, You! I was doing okay with this long-distance thing until I found your shirt in the laundry. It still smells like you, and it hit me how much I miss you. Just wanted to tell you that.

My Dearest, every time my phone rings, I hope it's you. I miss our conversations and hearing about the little things that happen in your day. It's those small moments I miss the most. Looking forward to your next call.

Honey, I've been trying to cook that recipe we saw together, but it didn't turn out right. It made me realize how much I miss your cooking and your company in the kitchen. Can't wait to mess up more recipes with you.

Sweetheart, I saw a couple at the park today, and it made me miss our walks and talks. It's the simple things like that I miss the most. I'm counting down the days until we can do that again.

My Everything, I've been wearing your hoodie because it makes me feel closer to you. It's a small comfort, but I really miss you being here, making me laugh, and just being my rock. Looking forward to having you back.

Love, I was listening to our song, and it made me both happy and sad. Happy because it's ours, but sad because you're not here to dance with me in the kitchen. I miss those spontaneous moments with you. Can't wait to create more memories.

How to Write Your Own Love Letters for Him

Crafting a love letter for your boyfriend is a timeless way to express your deepest affections and thoughts. Whether he's just across town or you share the same address, a handwritten note adds a personal touch that digital messages can't match. Here’s how to pour your heart out on paper.

Begin by explaining why you felt compelled to write. Maybe you saw something that reminded you of him, or perhaps you just felt an overwhelming sense of love. “I saw a sunset that took my breath away today, and it made me think of you.”

Think of a moment you shared that felt like a snapshot of pure happiness. Describe it in detail, letting him relive it through your words. “Remember that rainy Sunday we spent in bed with coffee and old movies? That was perfection.”

List the qualities that make him special to you. Be specific about what sets him apart in your eyes. “I love the way you scrunch your nose when you laugh and how passionate you get about your hobbies.”

Tell him how he's changed your life for the better. Focus on the emotional growth or happiness you've experienced. “Since you've been part of my life, I find myself smiling more, stressing less.”

Share your hopes and dreams for the future you envision together. It could be as simple as more lazy Sundays or as grand as adventures abroad. “I can't wait for all the mornings we'll start together and the nights we'll end in each other's arms.”

Conclude your letter with a promise that underscores your commitment and love. “I promise to always find new reasons to fall in love with you every single day.”

Choose a sign-off that feels right to you, whether it's a simple “I love you,” a playful “Yours forever,” or an intimate “With all my heart.”

A love letter doesn't have to be perfect; it just needs to be honest and from the heart. It's the thought and effort that counts the most.

Ensuring your partner feels appreciated is vital for a healthy and loving relationship .

If you have trouble speaking your true feelings out loud, consider writing a love letter for him so that he feels loved and cared for.

You can tweak these love letters to your own unique situation, so your boyfriend knows he is special. He’ll probably cherish your words more than you think!

Letter: Adopt, rather than buy pets

Opinion Opinion | Apr 30, 2024

I am writing about the community engagement service that has encouraged me to volunteer more in my community. For this service, I decided to volunteer at the animal shelter in Eagle. My love for animals is what brought me to choose this area as my main community service.

This organization has a love and understanding for the animals who are either surrendered, strayed, or transferred from other locations. On my first day walking into this shelter, I was immediately met with happy faces and excited dogs at the front desk. Working with these animals, I saw the effort the employees put into making sure any animal who was sick, injured, or with behavioral concerns protected the people working and other animals. Each day began the same way, by greeting the staff and taking the dogs on a walk around the baseball field, I enjoyed every moment of it.

Looking back, my enthusiasm to volunteer at the shelter began when I decided I wanted to adopt a dog from a shelter. Although this is still a work in progress, it will always break my heart when I see all these shelters filled with abandoned animals looking for their forever homes but at risk of being euthanized. Since there is little I can do to help all of those animals I begin with those whom I can reach like local shelters by working with adoption events, volunteering to foster dogs, and taking them on frequent walks. I write this letter with the hope that I can open your eyes to animal shelters to encourage people to adopt rather than buy pets, every animal deserves to feel love in a home of their own. The best way to show adoptable dogs is by promoting adoption events that show these dogs in a different light.
