Research Scholarships

The scholarships listed under the heading of research pertain to a wide range of academic disciplines and fields. There are a few different educational pathways for students interested in research. Research and development management is one such program. Here you'll study how to manage projects, programs and organizations that are involved with basic or applied research. 

Another academic program available at the bachelor's degree level is research methodology. With a research methodology degree program, you'll study the various modes of design for research studies. You'll learn how to measure variables, analyze data and formulate models.

However, you needn't enroll in either of the above mentioned programs if you want to conduct research. Plenty of academic fields feature research as an integral component of the discipline. The biological sciences are a good example of such a field. In subjects such as biotechnology, genetics, molecular biology or entomology, there are a host of opportunities for conducting research. However, keep in mind that in many of these fields conducting high-end research requires a master's or doctoral degree.

Other majors that feature a large amount of research include many of the humanities. Areas such as history, linguistics and comparative literature all rely of research to further the understanding and awareness of their subject matter. These research opportunities are available at both the bachelor's as well as the graduate level.

Other academic fields that rely heavily on research are the social sciences. Subjects such as anthropology, archeology, psychology and sociology use various modes of research to investigate and explore the issues and topics integral to their understanding.

One of the most well-funded international scholarships are research scholarships. Foreign governments fund international research scholarships to establish their countries as global research hubs. Universities set up international research scholarship programs to attract high quality students to contribute to their research efforts. Research scholarships are usually towards Masters by Research/Thesis or PhD Degree.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program (USA) The Fulbright Foreign Student Program are prestigious scholarships for international students who wants to pursue a Master’s or PhD degree in the United States.  The Fulbright program provides funding for the duration of the study. The grant also funds tuition, textbooks, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Canada) The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) was created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning.  The scholarships are towards a doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).  The scholarship is worth $50,000 per year for three years.

Australia Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships  (Australia) The Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships support both domestic and overseas students undertaking Research Doctorate and Research Masters degrees, known as higher degrees by research (HDRs). The scholarship provides one or more of the following: tuition fees, living costs, and ancillary costs (health insurance, relocation costs, publication costs).

Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships (Switzerland) The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships provide graduates from all fields with the opportunity to pursue doctoral or postdoctoral research  at one of the public funded university or recognized institution in Switzerland.  The scholarship covers a monthly allowance, tuition fees, health insurance, lodging allowance, etc.

CIMO Doctoral Fellowships (Finland) The CIMO Fellowships programme is open to young Doctoral level students and researchers from all countries and from all academic fields who wish to pursue their Doctorate (or Double Doctorate) at a Finnish university. The scholarship period may vary from 3 to 12 months and includes a monthly allowance.

New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (New Zealand) The NZIDRS provides scholarships for international students to undertake PhD study in any discipline at a New Zealand university.  The NZIDRS covers University tuition fees and associated student levies for 3 years, an annual living stipend, and medical insurance.

Adelaide Scholarships International (Australia) The University of Adelaide offers the  Adelaide Scholarships International (ASI) program to attract high quality international postgraduate students to areas of research strength in the University to support its research effort.  The scholarships includes course tuition fees, annual living allowance, and health insurance.

Melbourne Research Scholarships  (Australia) The Melbourne Research Scholarship (MRS) was established by the University of Melbourne and is awarded to high achieving domestic and international research students.  The benefits of the Melbourne Research Scholarship vary depending on your circumstance and may include one or more of the following: fortnightly living allowance, relocation allowance,  paid sick, maternity and parenting leave, full fee remission (international students only) and Overseas Student Health Cover (international students only).

University of Sydney International Scholarships (Australia) The University of Sydney invites candidates who are eligible to undertake a Postgraduate Research Degree or Master’s by Research program at this University to apply for the University of Sydney International Research Scholarship (USydIS).   The USydIS will cover tuition fees and living allowance for up to three years.

Cambridge International Scholarship Scheme (UK) The University of Cambridge will offer, via the Cambridge Trusts, approximately 80 Cambridge International Scholarships to Overseas Students who embark on a research course leading to a PhD Degree.  Each award will underwrite the full cost of fees and maintenance for the duration of the course.

Warwick Chancellor’s International Scholarships (UK) The Warwick Graduate School awards around 25 Chancellor’s International Scholarships to the most outstanding international PhD applicants yearly. The scholarships are open to students of any nationality and to any discipline offered at Warwick.  The scholarships include the full payment of overseas tuition fee and a maintenance stipend.

Edinburgh Global Research Scholarships (UK) The Edinburgh Global Research Scholarships are designed to attract high quality overseas research students to the University of Edinburgh. Each award covers the difference between the tuition fee for a  UK / EU  graduate student and that chargeable to an overseas graduate student. The awards do not cover maintenance expenses.

Nottingham Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship for Research Excellence (UK) The University of Nottingham offers scholarships for international students who wish to pursue a PhD or MPhil research programme at the University.  The scholarship cover full tuition fees.

Sussex Chancellor’s International Research Scholarships (UK) The University of Sussex is seeking to attract international research scholars for full-time doctoral studies in eligible fields of study at the University.  The scholarship will cover international fees and stipend.

Global Mind Doctoral Scholarship Programme at K.U. Leuven  (Belgium) K.U. Leuven offers IRO (Interfaculty Council for Development Co-operation) scholarships to deserving students from developing countries to do their PhD in the largest university in Flanders, Belgium. Scholarly Opportunities

Research opportunities abound at the University of Chicago, and Pritzker consistently ranks as one of the top five institutions for NIH research grants per faculty member. Students pursue scholarly work through one of our three MD/PhD programs or our Scholarship & Discovery curriculum for MD students.

MD Scholarly Opportunities

Through Scholarship & Discovery (S&D) , all MD students complete a mentored scholarly project by the time of graduation. The S&D curriculum—undertaken in years one, two, and four—provides enhanced training in fundamental concepts and skills to ensure student success in one of these five fields of study.

Summer Research Program

The Summer Research Program (SRP) is an 11-week medical research opportunity available to first year medical students. Students develop a well-defined project and work with faculty mentors throughout the summer to conduct research. In addition to their research, students are required to attend weekly cluster meetings and seminars.

At the end of the 11 weeks, participants present their research at the Summer Research Forum. There students are judged and are eligible to receive cash prizes.

It is the goal of the Pritzker and NorthShore Fellowship Program to support the development of future leaders in medicine across the spectrum of research, scholarship, and service. The Pritzker School of Medicine will provide financial support to select students ("Fellows") who choose to pursue a one-year research project, international experience, or a community service opportunity.

During the process of renewing our partnership with NorthShore University HealthSystem , the team at NorthShore presented us with a generous gift in recognition of our shared educational mission. This gift is being used to fund an annual NorthShore Fellowship on the same cycle as the Pritzker Fellowships. Preference will be given to students conducting research at NorthShore or under the guidance of NorthShore faculty members, though it is not a requirement.

Requirements of the Fellowship include...

• A commitment to take a year off from medical school studies to work on the intended project during the period of funding.
• Provision of a progress report at six months.
• Final report submitted within one month of completing the fellowship year.
• Presentation of work at one or more forum (Medical Education Day, Research in Progress [RIP], regional or national conference) following completion of the fellowship year.
• Please note: In order to accommodate the needs of all students who wish to take a year off for scholarly opportunities, students who apply for the Pritzker and NorthShore Fellowship and receive support from an external funding source must notify the Pritzker and NorthShore Fellowship Review Committee ASAP (via  [email protected] ). If the external funding level is similar to the amount offered through the Pritzker and NorthShore Fellowship Program, the Pritzker and NorthShore Fellowship funds will be redistributed accordingly.

Things to know before you apply

Students selected as Pritzker and NorthShore Fellows will receive $20,000 beginning in July and continuing throughout the academic year. Eligible students must have completed at least two years of study at the Pritzker School of Medicine (please note: PhD students are not eligible for the Pritzker/NorthShore Fellowship Program). All applicants must have a faculty sponsor who will provide mentorship and support during this year and ensure the completion of the proposed project. The faculty sponsor does not  have to be on the faculty at the University of Chicago or NorthShore University HealthSystem, but must demonstrate the qualifications to mentor the student in a scholarly project. Pritzker and NorthShore Fellows will ultimately present their work in at least one forum, such as the Medical Education Day, Research in Progress (RIP), or a regional or national conference.

Q. Why is the application limited to second- and third-years?

A. The application is limited to those who have completed two years at the Pritzker School of Medicine. The purpose is to give students ample time to develop their interests in research, community service, or international experiences. Because of the size of the award, this level of investment should be provided to an individual who has already demonstrated significant interest in one of these areas and a capacity to bring projects to fruition.

Q. How are fellows selected?

A. Fellows will be selected by a faculty committee.

Q. What is the committee looking for in the applications?

A. The committee is looking for a well thought through program of study or research project, and a strong relationship with an appropriate faculty mentor who is invested in the student.

Q. How detailed should the budget be?

A. The budget can contain a general overview of broad categories. However, enough detail about the program and the budget should be provided so that the committee can evaluate whether the budget is realistic.

Q. Are there stipulations on what funds should be used for (research, travel, living expenses, expenses for self or for family)?

A. There are no stipulations on how the funds should be used. If the student wants to use the money to support living expenses for the year, that is acceptable. However, students will be called upon to report how they used the money by providing information in general categories.

Q. How do I select an advisor for the fellowship?

A. Students should select an advisor whose career/track record is closely matched to their own research and future career interests. The advisor should also be able to provide sufficient time to mentor and support the student during the year.

Q. Is there a word limit for application and for faculty sponsor letter?

The application should not exceed 5 pages. The faculty sponsor letter should be 1-2 pages.

Q. If selected, what should the interim report contain?

If selected for the fellowship, students will be required to provide an interim report at six months. The interim report should include a description of activities undertaken over the transpired period and a description of plans for the remaining period of support. The student’s research advisor should also provide information about his or her work with the student.

The Calvin Fentress Fellowship Awards were created to encourage research activities by students during their fourth elective year. Named in honor of a grateful patient, the Fentress Fellows receive a $2,000 stipend for completing a research project. The research may be either a continuation of prior research work or a new research project. PhD medical students and PhD candidates may not apply. Fentress fellows present their work at the annual Senior Scientific Session.

To be eligible for the $2,000 stipend, a student must be registered for research credits during the academic year. It is recommended that three months of research be full-time; however research throughout the year may be considered.

The John D. Arnold Scientific Research Prize is a facet of the Fentress Research Fellowship; Arnold Prize recipients are chosen from the subset of Fentress applicants for their demonstrated sustained relationship with their mentor. This award was established by a grateful alumnus, Dr. Charles Pak, in recognition of the impact his mentor had on his education and future research career. The Arnold Scientific Research Prize recognizes students whose research accomplishments as medical students are based on ongoing, sustained work with a faculty mentor. The goal of the Arnold Scientific Research Prize, much like the Fentress, is to provide support for the continuation of this research during the fourth year of medical school.

Each student will receive $2,000 to pursue a scholarly project and will present their findings during the annual Senior Scientific Session. At the time of the event, we will also recognize each mentor by presenting the John D. Arnold, MD Mentor Award for sustained excellence in mentoring medical students.

Senior Scientific Session

The annual Senior Scientific Session was founded in 1946 by Dr. Leon Jacobson to provide fourth year medical students with a forum to present their research. Each year, nearly one-third of the graduating class participates in this event. Student presentations and posters are judged by a panel of faculty members. Cash prizes for excellence in science and presentation will be awarded.

Research Excellence Scholarship

UCL’s Research Excellence Scholarship (UCL-RES) is our new prestigious scholarship which aims to attract outstanding scholars to undertake doctoral research at UCL.

We are offering up to 40 fully funded UCL Research Excellence Scholarships (RES) to exceptional applicants from any country. Both prospective and current UCL doctoral students can apply.

Value, benefits, and duration

The UCL-RES scholarship consists of full fees (either Home or Overseas) plus a maintenance stipend during the research portion of the prorgamme which increases each year with inflation. For 2023/24, the rate is £20,622 for full-time study (rates are calculated 'pro rata' for part-time students). For 2024/25, the rate is to be confirmed.

The scholarship also includes additional research costs of up to £1,200 per year for the stated duration of the research portion of the programme.

Awards are made for the normal length of the research portion of the programme of study. This is normally 3 years for a full-time MPhil/PhD/EngD degree programme (or 5 years for part-time study), subject to sufficient academic progress. Please note the funding does not cover CRS/writing up year(s).

Where students are undertaking integrated four-year doctoral programmes, the award will be extended to the 4th year of research.

The funding start date for the start of the academic year. For 2024/25 should be 23  September 2024 (TBC).

Candidates meeting or predicted to meet the eligibility criteria are reviewed by the Department to which they have applied. Departments select a ranked shortlist of candidates to present to the central UCL Selection Panel for consideration.

The final decisions are made by the UCL Selection Panel. The Pro-Vice-Provost, Doctoral School chairs the panel which includes members of academic staff in a range of disciplines from across UCL.

Candidates are assessed against the following criteria:

• Academic excellence - as demonstrated by past academic results evidenced by transcripts, awards, and referees’ comments  
• Research Potential - as demonstrated by the candidate’s research experience to date, their enthusiasm for research, the research plan and its originality and potential societal impact  

Financial circumstances are not considered for the purposes of this scholarship.

How to apply

In order to apply for the UCL-RES, you must complete the following steps: 

Step 1 - apply for admission to UCL

The following instructions apply to prospective students only – current students already enrolled on their research degrees can proceed directly to Step 2. 

You must submit a complete application for admission onto an eligible degree programme by the specified deadline. You do not need to have secured an offer of a place at UCL in order to apply for the scholarship,  but you must have submitted your admission application .

Step 2 - submit your scholarship application documents to your academic department

The following instructions apply to both prospective and current students.

You must contact your academic department/institute/division/unit to notify them that you would like to be considered for a UCL-RES and must submit the below documents to them. Please use our  list of administrative contacts page    to find where to submit your application materials.

• CV   – Please ensure your CV is up to date and lists all publications, past/current prizes, awards, and scholarships. 
• A lay summary  of your research proposal, on a Word or PDF document (max. 200 words not including title).  When writing your research proposal/outline please note that the selection panel members are not likely to be specialists in your subject. Please describe clearly – in language which can be understood by academics from any discipline – the aim of your research, the methodology you will use and the potential significance of this study to your discipline. It is extremely important that you pay attention to this summary and write in as clear language as possible as it may significantly affect the outcome of your application. The proposal should be written by you, not your supervisor or any other member of academic department staff.
• Academic transcripts  - Please ensure you submit transcripts from all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes you have attended and that each academic transcript submitted includes clarification on the grading scale/range of grades possible for that degree.
• 2 References

Reference number 1 should relate to your most recently completed university programme/degree  (or the one you intend to complete, if applicable) and can be the same referee who submitted a reference as part of your admission application but this reference must be submitted on the Reference Form 1.

Reference number 2 should relate to your current or intended research programme/project , for which you are seeking funding. This reference MUST be provided by your research supervisor at UCL. If you are a prospective student and your supervisor has not yet been allocated, please check the webpage of the relevant UCL department you wish to apply to and identify and contact a supervisor who has relevant expertise in your preferred field of interest.

You must apply for admission and submit the additional information to your department no later than Friday, 12 January 2024. Please be aware that some academic departments set their own deadlines which may be earlier than this date, so make sure you check with them directly.

Think Swiss Research Scholarship

• Open to undergrads (sophomore or higher) and graduate students.
• Applications can be studying any field, but with an invitation from a professor at a Swiss university to provide you with a research stay in his/her group. While language skills are not required, knowledge of German, French, or Italian is helpful for daily life.
• Usual application deadline: March.
• The award for Think Swiss Research Scholarship is a two or three month stipend while conducting research in a Swiss institution or a summer school course in Switzerland.

A scholarship focused on research and creative activity

The Cox Research Scholarship is a need-based scholarship program for Indiana residents of exemplary achievement and scholarly curiosity. If selected as a Cox Research Scholar, you’ll have the unique opportunity to participate in meaningful research or creative activity under the mentorship of a faculty member at IU Bloomington. All Cox Research Scholars are invited to join the Hutton Honors College.

In addition to being a full-time student, you’ll be required to work an average of 10 to 12 hours per week on a scholarly, research-based project related to your academic interests.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a Cox Research Scholarship, you must:

• Enter IU classified as an Indiana resident   with a citizen status of U.S. Citizen or Naturalized Citizen .
• Be pursuing your first baccalaureate degree.
• Be a full-time student enrolled in at least 12 credit hours upon arrival and throughout your academic career at IU Bloomington.
• Have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or higher (4.0 scale) at the time of admission.
• Demonstrate financial need by filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)  with the federal government by February 1, 2024 for the upcoming academic year.
• Be willing to commit to 10 to 12 hours of work in research each week during your entire enrollment at Indiana University.
• Be willing to participate in Camp Cox, a 6-day and 5-night off-campus professional development, leadership, and orientation program. This year's session is scheduled for July 11-16, 2024 at Bradford Woods.
• As an incoming student, apply to Indiana University Bloomington by November 1 for Cox Scholarship consideration.

You can be interested in any academic major and are not expected to have prior research experience. However, you must exhibit academic curiosity and intellectual prowess.

Please note: NCAA athletes are not eligible for Cox Scholarships. 

How to apply

The Cox Scholarship application opens on October 15, 2023.  To apply for the Cox Research Scholarship, you must   complete the following steps by February 1, 2024.

• Create your IU computing account. You will need your 10-digit university ID number provided in your admission notification email to create this account. It may take up to two hours to activate your account. Do not log in using your guest account.
• Log into   One.IU   o nce your account is activated.  Enter the keyword “scholarships” in the search bar.

• Click “Sign In With Your Network ID.” You may be prompted to sign in using your IU credentials.
• Complete all questions on the “ General Application ,” then click “Finish and Submit.” This should be completed before applying for a Cox Scholarship. Please ensure that you answer all questions thoroughly.
• Select “Other Recommended Opportunities.”
• Search for “Cox.”
• Select “IUB-Cox Scholarship Application” and complete the application, including the optional Cox Research question at the end of the application.
• File the   Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)  with the federal government  by the Cox Scholarship Application deadline.

Please apply early to ensure we receive all of your application materials by the application deadline.

Selection timeline

In response to the challenges posed by this year's FAFSA process and timeline, Cox Scholarships will be granted solely based on submitted applications. Interviews will not be held for the fall 2024 cohort. May 10, 2024 Rolling offers will start being awarded   and will continue until the cohort is full.

By May 15, 2024 All applicants will be notified of their status.

Additional aid

If you’re awarded a Cox Scholarship, you can receive gift aid from institutional funds (IU merit scholarships, grants, and fee remissions) and entitlements from federal and state funds totaling no more than your  cost of attendance   for Indiana University Bloomington.

Please note that Cox Scholarship amounts will be reduced to ensure that your individual aid package does not exceed your cost of attendance for IU Bloomington.

Renewal criteria

The Cox Research Scholarship is available to students as incoming freshmen and, once awarded, is renewable for a total of four years (eight semesters).

If you choose to attend another college or university (including an IU campus other than Bloomington) or withdraw from IU, the scholarship is forfeited.

In order to renew the scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

• Be enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours) as a degree-seeking student on the Bloomington campus; waitlisted courses do not count toward official enrollment.
• Maintain a cumulative program GPA of 3.0 at IU.
• Complete successful participation in your assigned research work.

Your scholarship package—in conjunction with any other institutional funding and/or federal or state entitlements—will total the official  cost of attendance  at Indiana University Bloomington.

A college scholarship program for undergraduate students committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science research.

This program is for students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science research. The program provides scholarship recipients up to $20,000 per academic year for tuition, educational, and reasonable living expenses. Scholarships are awarded for one year and can be renewed for up to four years.

For every year of scholarship support, scholars commit to two paid service obligations in the NIH Intramural Research Program. These are:

• A ten week full-time summer internship at the NIH immediately following the year of scholarship support
• One year of full-time work at the NIH post-graduation; this service obligation may be deferred until completion of an advanced degree program.

UGSP scholars work in research groups directed by a Principal Investigator (PI). We offer research opportunities in the biomedical, behavioral and social sciences with opportunities to explore translational and clinical research. Students with experience in biology, engineering, epidemiology, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, nursing, physics, computer science,  bioinformatics and other health-related fields are invited to apply. UGSP Scholars may not work in administrative offices or outside of the NIH Intramural Research Program.

Research groups are located on several NIH campuses, including the main campus in Bethesda, MD. While the summer service obligation takes place in Bethesda, scholars may complete their post-graduation service obligation on any NIH campus.

In addition to an intensive research experience, UGSP scholars have access to:

• a strong cohort experience throughout their NIH training
• professional development programs focused on core competencies needed for success in research and healthcare careers
• educational and career advising
• a comprehensive well-being and resilience program

Diversity strengthens our community. We encourage applications from students who meet the specific UGSP eligibility requirements and who come  from diverse backgrounds, including:

• people from racial and ethnic groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research and healthcare fields.
• people with disabilities
• students who are, or were, enrolled in Tribal Colleges and Universities, community colleges, Hispanic-serving institutions, or Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)

As an NIH Undergraduate Scholar, you will incur 1 year and 10 weeks (62 weeks total) of obligated service at the NIH for each full or partial year of support. The maximum service obligation is 4 years. Scholars are obliged to serve as full-time NIH employees in an NIH Intramural Research Laboratory. You must begin your service within 60 days of completing the requirements for your undergraduate degree , unless a deferment is granted by the NIH UGSP.

To apply for UGSP, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. In addition, you must:

• Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited four-year college or university.
• Have a grade point average of 3.3 or greater on a 4.0-point scale, or rank within the top five percent of your class.
• Demonstrate exceptional financial need certified by your undergraduate institution’s financial aid office.

You must also be able to pass a federal background check . We strongly encourage you to carefully read the full terms and conditions. Ignoring this could prevent you from taking part in the program.

You are not eligible for UGSP if any one of the following items applies to you:

• You are a high school senior.
• You have already been awarded an undergraduate degree.
• You are currently enrolled in an advanced degree program, such as a master's degree.
• You are unable to fulfill the payback requirements.

Applicants with a family member working at NIH should be aware of the strict nepotism policy , which may limit your ability to work in certain NIH institutes, centers, or research groups.

UGSP Scholars may receive up to $20,000 of scholarship support each academic year. The scholarship is paid directly to your university and can be used for tuition, educational and reasonable living expenses as established by your university.

Scholars are paid directly during the summer and post-graduation service obligations at the NIH. The salary is commensurate to the level of education completed; scholars also receive benefits, including access to health insurance, free parking or Transhare benefits .

The decision to accept a UGSP scholarship is an important one as there are required service obligations. You must relocate to the NIH Bethesda campus during the summer and to Bethesda or another NIH campus to complete your post-graduate service obligation. It is crucial that you fully understand the program structure and the expectations of UGSP scholars. Carefully review all eligibility and obligation requirements before you begin your application.

The UGSP application is currently open.

The application will close on Friday, March 29, 2024 at 12 noon ET. Early review of applications will begin on Monday, March 15, 2024. References are due on Friday, April 12, 2024 at 12 noon ET. Exceptional Financial Need (EFN) certification is due on Friday, May 31, 2024 at 12 noon ET.

• To complete your application, import any relevant information from your profile. You must also submit:
• Coursework & Exams - a list of coursework and grades
• CV/Resume - a list of your education, experience, and other relevant history
• References - the names and contact information of three references
• Letter/Statement - a statement that broadly describes your research experience, interests, and goals.
• Financial Need - The email address of a financial aid officer at your institution so that they can complete EFN certification.

5. Review all of your materials carefully before you submit your application.

Your undergraduate institution must determine your 'Exceptional Financial Need’ (EFN).

The table below is one factor used by your financial aid officer (FAO) to determine your EFN status. You must provide the name and email of your financial aid officer.

Candidates that meet the minimal eligibility requirements will be reviewed by the UGSP Scientific Review Committee and a subset of candidates will receive invitations to interview virtually in mid-July. Successful candidates will be informed of their selection in late July.

However, we discourage you from reaching out directly to any investigators until candidate selections are complete. At that time, we will guide new awardees through the mentor-matching process.

Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity Program

The University of Houston is pleased to announce the Awards for Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity Program for 2023-2024. Awards of $8,000 each will be made to six (6) faculty, two (2) each at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor levels. Priority will be given to accomplishments while in service to the University of Houston. Nominations are sought from all units across campus but should be limited to those individuals who are clearly exceptional. An individual can receive an award only once at any level. Faculty who have won an Award for Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity at any level may not be nominated again. We trust that these awards, although limited in number, will provide visibility and appreciation for the excellent research, scholarship and creative activity found throughout the University.

Nominations must be submitted by Monday, January 15, 2024, before 5 p.m.(CST) . No nominations will be accepted after the deadline.

I want to apply for a research degree and a scholarship.

Check your eligibility for the research degree you’re interested in and the scholarship you want to apply for.

You can indicate your interest in a QUT scholarship (including the annual scholarship round) when you apply for admission to a QUT research degree. You don’t need to submit a separate scholarship application. Follow the instructions in the ‘financial details’ section of the expression of interest.

Among the most popular scholarships for international students in Germany are government and organization-funded programs. These scholarships play a crucial role in making higher education in Germany accessible to students from around the world.

DAAD Scholarship Programs

Who is it for? DAAD Scholarships, offered each year by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), primarily support graduates, doctoral candidates, and postdocs worldwide in pursuing master’s degrees, Ph.D. studies, and postdoctoral research in Germany.

What does the scholarship cover? These fully-funded scholarships cover monthly stipends (€934 for graduates and €1,200 for doctoral/Ph.D. students) and travel allowances, often including insurance coverage.

Study at GISMA University of Applied Sciences

What are the criteria? Eligibility criteria are primarily based on academic achievements, a recognized school leaving certificate (if applicable), proficiency in the language of instruction or working language(s), and relevant internships or work experience if required.

Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarships

Who is it for? The Heinrich Böll Foundation offers approximately 1500 scholarships each year to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students of all nationalities who are pursuing their degrees at universities, universities of applied sciences, or universities of the arts. 

What does the scholarship cover? Scholarship coverage varies by nationality and educational background.

• Undergraduate and graduate scholarships. Germans, foreign students educated in Germany, and EU nationals may receive up to €812 per month plus a €300 study allowance. Non-EU students not educated in Germany can get €934 per month with health insurance and other allowances.
• Doctoral scholarships. Germans, foreign students educated in Germany, and EU nationals not educated in Germany may receive a basic monthly allowance of €1,350 with additional funding opportunities. Non-EU nationals/students not educated in Germany can get €1,200 per month, a €100 monthly mobility allowance, and various individual allowances.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? Eligibility also varies by nationality and educational background.

• Undergraduate and graduate scholarships. Germans/foreign students educated in Germany qualify for first-degree scholarships, while EU nationals/students not educated in Germany can apply for Master’s degree scholarships with proof of their first professional qualification. Selection criteria include academics, social engagement, and motivations.
• Doctoral scholarships. Eligibility includes Germans/foreign students educated in Germany, EU nationals/students not educated in Germany, and non-EU nationals/students not educated in Germany. Proof of admission to doctoral studies is required, and selection is based on academic excellence, research project quality, social engagement, and motivations.

When is the deadline? The application deadline is March 1st and September 1st of each year. For additional information on deadlines, please visit the official website of the foundation.

DeutschlandStipendium National Scholarship Program

Who is it for? The Deutschlandstipendium is for students and first-year students who demonstrate outstanding achievements in their studies and careers. It is open to applicants from around the world, regardless of their nationality, personal income, or parental income.

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship covers 300 euros per month, with half provided by the federal government and the other half from private donors. This financial support is income-independent and is granted for at least two semesters, potentially covering the entire standard period of study.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? The Deutschlandstipendium is granted by universities, and applicants must fulfill their specific requirements. Selection criteria often involve academic excellence, social engagement, and personal achievements, which can include overcoming challenges. Importantly, this scholarship is not based on personal or parental income and doesn’t affect BAföG grants.

When is the deadline? Application periods for the Deutschlandstipendium are typically open in the months leading up to the start of the academic year. Specific deadlines vary by university, so it’s best to check with your chosen university for more information.

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Scholarship

Who is it for? The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) scholarship is for international students and graduates who have acquired a university degree and intend to pursue postgraduate or master’s studies, doctoral studies, or a research fellowship of at least three semesters at a university in Germany.

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship program includes financial assistance, personal guidance, a seminar program, and access to the KAS network. Graduate students receive a monthly scholarship of €934 for two years, while PhD students receive €1,400 per month for three years. Additional subsidies for health insurance, family allowance, children’s allowance, and course-related fees may be available.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? MA applicants must have a university degree, demonstrate strong academic performance, possess B2-level German language skills, engage in voluntary work, plan for a minimum of four semesters in Germany, have a broad education, and support democracy and human rights. 

Ph.D. applicants should fulfill the criteria above, provide a detailed thesis description, a second academic letter of recommendation from their thesis supervisor, and confirmation of supervision by their doctoral advisor.

When is the deadline? The application deadline for the scholarship program varies depending on the application route. For international applicants from focus countries or regions determined for the year, deadlines and application procedures may differ. For domestic applicants in Germany, the application period ends on July 15th of every year.

Erasmus Scholarship Programs

Who is it for? The Erasmus+ Mobility Programme for Higher Education Students is intended for students who are regularly enrolled at a German higher education institution, have completed their first year of study, are enrolled at a higher education institution participating in the Erasmus+ project, and whose home institution has signed an Erasmus cooperation agreement with the receiving institution. It is open to students in at least their second year of study.

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship covers study periods and traineeships (work placements) in specified Erasmus+ program countries and partner countries. Sponsored students are exempt from tuition, registration, examination, laboratory, and library fees at the host institution.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? Applicants must meet the following criteria: be regularly enrolled at a German higher education institution, have completed their first year of study, be enrolled at a higher education institution participating in the Erasmus+ project, and have their home institution sign an Erasmus cooperation agreement with the receiving institution. Additionally, students must be in at least their second year of study to be eligible.

When is the deadline? Application dates can vary depending on the scholarship, therefore it’s best to get in touch with your home institution’s international office or Erasmus+ coordinator for more information.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships

Who is the scholarship for? MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships target PhD-holding researchers worldwide, fostering skills development through advanced training, international mobility, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The fellowships offer two programs: European and Global Postdoctoral Fellowships.

What does the scholarship cover? Funding supports European Fellowships (12-24 months) and Global Fellowships (24-36 months) with “outgoing” and “return” phases. Benefits include full-time employment contracts, monthly salaries, living allowances, and support for research-related expenses at host institutions.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? Eligibility for MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships is open to researchers of any nationality and from all scientific disciplines who hold a doctoral degree. Applicants should have a maximum of 8 years of full-time post-graduate research experience at the submission deadline, with certain allowances for career breaks. Selection considers Excellence (50%), Impact (30%), and Implementation Quality (20%) with expert panel assessment.

Bayer Foundation Fellowships

Who is the scholarship for? Scholarships Offered by German Universities

German universities offer a wide range of scholarships to support students in their academic pursuits. If you’re studying or planning to study in one of these universities, here are some of the scholarships you can explore:

Humboldt Research Fellowship

Who is the scholarship for? The Humboldt Research Fellowship is open to post-doctoral researchers worldwide, regardless of their field, and is divided into two categories:

• Postdocs: Recent doctorate holders (within four years) or near completion (within six months) with a summary of findings.
• Experienced researchers: Completed doctorate within the last twelve years with substantial publications. In some cases, up to 16 years after a master’s with a fitting publication record.

What does the scholarship cover? The Humboldt Research Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of €2,670 for postdoctoral researchers and €3,170 for experienced researchers. Fellowships can last from 6 to 24 months for postdocs and from 6 to 18 months for experienced researchers, with the possibility of dividing them into up to three stays within three years. Additional support includes family benefits, private health insurance subsidies, and travel expense allowances.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? Applicants must not be German nationals unless they’ve lived abroad for over ten years or five years with strong ties to their current residence. Staying in Germany for more than six months within 18 months before application disqualifies. They need a mentoring agreement and written confirmation of research facilities from a German institution, two expert reviews, language proficiency in German or English, and must adhere to scientific ethics. Previous Humboldt Foundation sponsorship is a disqualifier. 

Required documents include a CV, research outline, publications, doctoral certificate, language certificate if needed, and extra materials. The application is online, with notification of the selection date after document review.

When is the deadline? The Selection Committee meets in March, July, and November, so applicants should submit well in advance of the desired selection date. The fellowship can commence between two and twelve months after selection. Reapplications are possible after 18 months for unanimously rejected applications.

TUM Linde / MDSI Master Scholarship

Who is the scholarship for? The Linde / MDSI Master’s Scholarship is open to students currently enrolled in the master’s programs “Data Engineering and Analytics” or “Mathematics in Data Science” at the Munich Data Science Institute (MDSI) who hold a German or foreign higher education entrance qualification. Female students are particularly encouraged to apply. 

What does the scholarship cover? The Linde / MDSI Master’s Scholarship provides €1,000 per month and is granted for a maximum of twelve months.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? Applicants must have been enrolled in one of the two Master’s programs since winter semester 2023/24 or earlier. They must be distinguished by their special talent in the fields of Data Engineering and Analytics or Mathematics in Data Science, demonstrate outstanding academic achievements, and show commitment to their studies. Applicants from earlier calls are not eligible.

When is the deadline? The application deadline for the next scholarship is February 25, 2024. Successful applicants will be supported with the scholarship from April 1, 2024.

Heidelberg University HAUS Scholarships

Who is the scholarship for? The HAUS Scholarship is for qualified students from a United States university planning to study at Universität Heidelberg.

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship award is $5,000 for master’s program students or $3,000 for bachelor’s program students for one semester, with the possibility to extend for a second semester, pending the availability of funds.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? Candidates must be undergraduate or master’s program students with strong academic credentials enrolled at or graduated from a U.S. institution of higher education, have U.S. residency, and be accepted as students at Heidelberg University. Students currently enrolled at Heidelberg University or receiving a scholarship from a different source are not eligible.

When is the deadline? The application period for the current cycle is closed, and the application for Winter Semester 2024-25 will open in early 2024.

University of Hamburg Merit Scholarships

Who is the scholarship for? The merit scholarship at Universität Hamburg is intended for highly qualified international undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students who have been enrolled at the university for at least 2 semesters, pursuing a degree and not holding German citizenship.

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship provides a maximum monthly funding sum of €850, with some doctoral researchers potentially receiving up to €1,000 per month. The funding duration is 2 semesters (12 months), with the possibility of reapplying. In exceptional cases, the maximum funding period is 3 years.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be enrolled at Universität Hamburg for at least 2 semesters, pursuing a degree. They must not hold German citizenship and should not be eligible for the federal student loan scheme. You must submit a CV, letter of motivation, proof of social/intercultural activities (if applicable), academic records, and evaluations from two professors or junior professors. A committee comprising faculty members and student council representatives assesses applicants based on academic performance, other skills, social engagement, and financial need. 

When is the deadline? 

The application deadlines are:

• 15 April (funding period: 1 October – 30 September of the same year)
• 15 October (funding period: 1 April – 31 March of the following year).

Berlin International University of Applied Sciences Christian Wulff Scholarship

Who is the scholarship for? The Christian Wulff scholarship at Berlin International (BI) is awarded to one BA or MA student.

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship covers 50 percent of the tuition fee from the time it is awarded until the end of the regular studies (up to the 6th semester).

What are the requirements and selection criteria? The scholarship is awarded based on outstanding academic achievements and extraordinary engagement within the BI community. The recipient is nominated by the president and the deans of BI’s faculties and is announced at the graduation ceremony.

When is the deadline? There is no application deadline for this scholarship, the recipient is selected by the university itself.

Federal German State-Specific Scholarships

Federal state scholarships are government-backed financial aid programs for students in different German states. Here are some to consider:

Baden-Württemberg Stiftung

Who is the scholarship for? The BW-Stipendium for university students is designed for two groups: students studying in Baden-Württemberg who want to go abroad and international students wishing to study in Baden-Württemberg. This scholarship benefits approximately 1,500 young individuals annually.

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship is individually calculated and ranges from €600 to €1,400 per month. Additionally, scholars receive non-material assistance and become part of an international network connecting individuals from diverse disciplines and cultures.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled at a higher education institution in Baden-Württemberg or a partner institution abroad. The scholarship is awarded to about 1,500 students each year. Selection criteria may include academic merit and other relevant qualifications.

When is the deadline? The application deadline varies and should be confirmed with the International Office at your higher education institution.

Bavaria – Max We­ber-Program

Who is the scholarship for? The Max Weber Program is open to particularly gifted students who are enrolled at Bavarian higher education institutions. It targets high-school graduates and students who wish to study or are already enrolled at a Bavarian higher education institution.

What does the scholarship cover? The Max Weber Program provides a semester allowance of €1,290 and financial support for study projects abroad. Additionally, it offers a comprehensive educational program of seminars and events to support personal development.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? The program awards scholarships to high-achieving Bavarian tertiary students from their third semester onwards. Applicants can apply directly or be nominated by professors, Elite Graduate Program Heads, or examination boards. 

Selection is based on various criteria, including academic performance and extracurricular involvement, assessed through interviews and group sessions. Scholarships are available for Bachelor’s and subsequent Master’s degrees in the same subject, with applicants generally under 23 years old and having at least two semesters left in their standard study period.

When is the deadline? Candidates should submit their application documents by November 1 for the direct application route and by January 15 for nominated candidates. For precise and up-to-date deadline information, we recommend visiting the official website.

Bavaria – Mari­an­ne-Plehn-Pro­gram

Who is the scholarship for? The Marianne-Plehn-Program targets exceptional young scientists within the German Academic Scholarship Foundation, offering a unique blend of scholarship and part-time employment. This program enables doctoral students to gain teaching and administrative experience alongside their research.

What does the scholarship cover? The Marianne-Plehn-Program includes a 25% part-time employment alongside a scholarship, offering social security, teaching experience, administrative tasks, and access to the Elite Network of Bavaria’s resources and programs.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? To qualify for the Marianne-Plehn-Program, applicants need a doctoral scholarship from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation, which they can apply for within twelve months of starting their doctoral scholarship. They must conduct their doctoral studies at a Bavarian university and commence the 25% part-time employment within six months of funding approval. Applicants must also secure a hosting department/chair at a Bavarian university, demonstrating how this employment will enhance their dissertation project and scientific qualifications.

When is the deadline? The application for the Marianne-Plehn-Program can be submitted simultaneously with or after an application for a doctoral scholarship from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation, but no later than twelve months after starting the doctoral scholarship. 

The Lower Saxony Scholarship (Niedersachsenstipendium)

Who is the scholarship for? The Lower Saxony State Scholarship (Niedersachsenstipendium) is for particularly talented and committed students who face difficult starting and basic conditions, including but not limited to young people who are the first in their family to pursue higher education. Additionally, it aims to support students from Ukraine who have sought refuge in Lower Saxony and are facing challenging circumstances due to their flight.

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship program provides financial support to eligible students. Typically, the scholarships have a one-time value of 500 euros each, although in some cases, the funding amounts may be higher.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? Students under the following circumstances are given an advantage when applying for the “Lower Saxony State Scholarship”: being particularly talented and committed students, coming from an educationally disadvantaged background, demonstrating outstanding voluntary commitment, having a tense financial situation, especially for families with many children, and facing particularly difficult starting and basic conditions due to their flight, students from Ukraine who have sought refuge in Lower Saxony.

The application process and deadlines for the “Lower Saxony State Scholarship” are determined by the individual universities in Lower Saxony. Applicants should check with their respective universities for specific application periods and submission deadlines.

Berlin – Elsa Neumann Scholarship

Who is the scholarship for? The Elsa Neumann scholarship is for doctoral researchers who are enrolled and supervised at one of the universities in Berlin. It is provided in accordance with the Berlin State Act to Support Early-Career Researchers and Artists (Gesetz zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen und künstlerischen Nachwuchses).

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship provides financial support, including a monthly stipend of €1,350, along with a €100 monthly allowance for research expenses. Additionally, family allowances and special allowances for travel costs can be granted. Scholarships are initially awarded for a period of up to two years, with scholarship holders required to submit progress reports and statements from academic supervisors. Scholarships for dissertation completion are granted for a maximum of one year and cannot be extended.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? Applicants need outstanding academic records, research contributions, and must be academically supervised at a Berlin university. Public funding recipients are ineligible.

When is the deadline? There are two application rounds, one in April and one in November. The last application round ended on 15 November 2023. The applications will reopen on 14 February 2024 up until 17 April 2024.

MBA Scholarships for International Students in Germany

ESMT MBA Scholarships

Who is the scholarship for? ESMT Berlin offers a range of MBA scholarships designed for outstanding MBA applicants. HHL Leipzig Scholarships

Who is the scholarship for? These scholarships are primarily aimed at candidates applying to HHL’s full-time MBA program. Each scholarship has focus areas or criteria. The list includes the Middle East Scholarship, Africa Scholarship, Latin America Scholarship, Eastern Europe Scholarship, Women in Business Scholarship, Future Entrepreneur Scholarship, Young Leipzig Leader Scholarship, and Dean’s List Scholarship.

What does the scholarship cover? Successful candidates for these scholarships will receive a partial tuition reduction for the full-time MBA program. The exact amount varies depending on the scholarship.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? Scholarship applicants must meet common criteria, including holding an undergraduate degree, having at least three years of work experience, securing a high GMAT score, and applying for the full-time MBA program. The Dean’s List Scholarship has additional requirements like exceptional academic and professional achievements, international experience, dedication to social causes, outstanding admission interviews, and alignment with HHL’s values.

When is the deadline? Applicants should submit their scholarship application with their program application and are encouraged to apply early for improved chances of financial support. The Dean’s List Scholarship deadline is June 30th annually.

WHU Otto Beisheim Scholarships

Who is the scholarship for? WHU offers various scholarships for candidates from all countries applying to their MBA program. These scholarships aim to support individuals who can bring unique value to the MBA class.

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarships provided by WHU do not specify a fixed amount, except for the WHU e-fellows.net Scholarship, which is valued at €10,000. The value of other scholarships may vary.

What are the requirements and selection criteria? The requirements and selection criteria for WHU scholarships differ based on the specific scholarship. Undergraduate researcher from hittinger lab wins goldwater scholarship.

A member of the Wisconsin Energy Institute’s Hittinger Lab has won the nation’s premier undergraduate scholarship in mathematics, engineering, and natural sciences. 

Katarina Aranguiz, a junior from Hartford, Wis., was one of four University of Wisconsin–Madison students to receive a 2024 Goldwater Scholarship.

Aranguiz, who is majoring in biochemistry with a certificate in data science, works in professor Chris Hittinger’s genetics lab, where she leads efforts in using machine learning to understand phenotypic variation across diverse yeast species for clinical and industrial applications.  

Aranguiz transferred to UW–Madison after completing her freshman year at UCLA, where she was part of an honors-level academic community that introduces students to cutting-edge biological sciences research. Last year she received a Sophomore Research Fellowship from the Provost’s Office and an award from the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund recognizing her potential to become a leader in the life sciences. She plans to pursue a PhD in computational biology and a research career furthering the development of sustainable bioproducts.

The scholarship program honors the late Sen. Barry Goldwater and is designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers.

A Goldwater Scholarship provides as much as $7,500 each year for up to two years of undergraduate study. A total of 438 Goldwater Scholars were selected this year from a field of 1,353 students nominated by their academic institutions.

BC junior Sancia Sehdev wins Goldwater Scholarship

Boston College biology major Sancia Sehdev ’25, a member of the Gabelli Presidential Scholars program who plans to pursue research in environmental health and epidemiology as a foundation for climate advocacy, has received a Barry Goldwater Scholarship, the nation’s premier undergraduate award in the sciences. Sehdev, a native of New Delhi who is minoring in medical humanities—an interdisciplinary, humanistic, and cultural study of illness, health, health care, and anatomy—is on the pre-med track. Her career goal is to practice medicine as a neurologist or psychiatrist, conduct environmental health research focused on the brain, and serve as an active climate advocate. “I am very honored to be named a Goldwater Scholar, and I am grateful for the support and confidence that the Goldwater Foundation has expressed in my future as a scientist,” said Sehdev.

“ The idea of pursuing a M.D./Ph.D. in environmental health excites me. I hope to attend an institution that can provide me with the same abundant resources and support as BC has. ”

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years as a United States senator from Arizona. Goldwater Scholarships—grants for up to two years of graduate studies—are awarded based on academic merit to the country’s most promising sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering.   Sehdev is the 21st Goldwater recipient from BC, and the first since Henry Dieckhaus ’20 in 2019.   “The idea of pursuing a M.D./Ph.D. [doctorate of medicine and philosophy] in environmental health excites me,” said Sehdev, whose initial interest in attending BC was driven by its excellent academic program in biology, its opportunities in environmental and public health, and emphasis on medical advancement and health care in Greater Boston.  “I hope to attend an institution that can provide me with the same abundant resources and support as BC has. “While I currently plan to focus my doctoral research on the impact of climate change on brain health and its potential role in the progression of Parkinson’s disease, the specific focus may evolve as the field grows. Post-graduation, I intend to undertake a neurology or psychiatry residency, and engage in environmental health research and advocacy.” “I congratulate Sancia Sehdev on her selection as a Goldwater Scholarship recipient,” said Professor of Biology Philip J. Landrigan, M.D., director of the Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good. “She has been actively engaged in research since her first summer at BC, when she examined the impacts on human health of common lands management in rural India, under the mentorship of [BC School of Social Work Dean] Gautam Yadama. Since then, she has worked on the creation of novel amino acids in BC’s Laboratory of Synthetic Biology and Biochemistry with the guidance of Chemistry Professor Abhishek Chatterjee, and she has investigated the impact of air pollution on brain structure at the Laboratory for Research in Neuroimaging Laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland. “Currently, Sancia is working under my mentorship on a project to identify chemicals in the environment known or suspected to cause disruptions in brain development in young children. The Goldwater Scholarship will provide Sancia with an extremely important assist on her life’s journey.” “Sancia’s curiosity, genuine care for research, perseverance, ability to work independently, and collaborative spirit make her an exceptional individual,” said Bogdan Draganski, M.D., director of the Laboratory for Research in Neuroimaging, who served as her research advisor during her stint there last summer studying air pollution’s impact on human brain tissue properties.  “I believe her dedication to pursuing medicine, coupled with her strong focus on research, will undoubtedly lead to a successful and impactful career.” As of now, Sehdev plans to take a gap year following graduation to continue working on her research in brain structure and environmental health with Landrigan and Dr. Draganski.

Three Carnegie Mellon University students have been selected to receive the 2024 Barry Goldwater scholarship. The students — Claire Jin, Yunshu Li and Katherine Parry — were selected from a pool of more than 5,000 applicants for the federally endowed award, which provides coverage fees, books, room and board, and tuition up to $7,500. 

The award from the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation (opens in new window) is specifically awarded to sophomores or juniors who display academic rigor and a strong commitment to pursuing education in the natural sciences, engineering or mathematics. With the latest awardees, Carnegie Mellon has had a total of 51 students receive the scholarship since its inception.

“We are immensely proud of these three students,” said CMU President Farnam Jahanian (opens in new window) . “It is wonderful to see Carnegie Mellon University’s roster of Goldwater Scholars grow and even more exciting to see our students recognized for their talents and hard work on the national stage. Congratulations to the winners from CMU — and to all the students who earned this distinction.”

Richelle Bernazzoli, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholar Development (opens in new window) (OURSD), celebrated the students’ continued success and commitment to scientific achievement and academic excellence.

“Claire, Yunshu and Katherine have already achieved so much in their fields, and the really exciting thing is that they are just getting started,” Bernazzoli said. “We greatly enjoyed getting to know them throughout the nomination process and we have been so impressed by the clarity of their goals and their dedication to their research areas. We can’t wait to see where their continued education and scholarship take them. 

Claire Jin wants to improve how generative artificial intelligence is incorporated into robotics. 

More specifically, she wants to help create adaptable, reliable and transparent robotic systems that integrate with generative AI.

By incorporating physical intuition, situational awareness, and the ability to infer human intentions, Jin wants to improve how people interact with robots. Additionally, by improving model generalizability to a variety of tasks and interpretability, she aims to help users troubleshoot more easily.

The third-year student in the School of Computer Science (opens in new window) is working with the Connecting Language to Action and the World (CLAW) Lab (opens in new window) on how AI programs reason and converse when they collaborate with humans or other robots to perform tasks without a single solution. 

“Knowing the caliber of previous scholars and their remarkable achievements in both industry and academia, I feel a sense of awe and gratitude,” Jin said. “It's an incredible honor to be recognized among such esteemed individuals, and I'm eager to contribute similarly with my future research.”

Jin, who will earn her bachelor’s degree in AI with an additional major in statistics in December, already has a great deal of experience working with large language models, and plans to pursue a Ph.D.

Her previous work includes using large language models for text-based game development and bug detection with Microsoft Research’s Natural Language Processing Group (opens in new window) , refining multimodal models with its Knowledge and Language Team (opens in new window) , and optimizing queueing strategies through reinforcement learning. 

Jin began her research journey in high school, where she led a project under mentorship from Zita Oravecz (opens in new window) in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies (opens in new window) at Penn State University (opens in new window) on predicting stress onset in adolescents based on physiological signals collected using wearable devices. The work was later published in 2023 following reanalysis using deep learning methods Jin learned at CMU and presented at the IEEE-EMBS International Conference on Body Sensor Networks (opens in new window) with support from the Carnegie Mellon OURSD Presentation Award (opens in new window) .

"I am deeply grateful for the pivotal role CMU's School of Computer Science has played in shaping my journey. Our school has provided me with so many enriching opportunities, from engaging in challenging classes to collaborating on projects with esteemed professors,” Jin said, noting the mentorship she received from academic and research advisers Reid Simmons (opens in new window) , Weina Wang (opens in new window) and Yonatan Bisk (opens in new window) , as well as professors Daniel Sleator (opens in new window) , Daniel Anderson (opens in new window) and David Woodruff (opens in new window) , to whom she has served as a teaching assistant.

“Their mentorship has not only fostered my academic growth but has also imparted valuable lessons that have shaped me into a more well-rounded individual,” Jin said.

Yunshu Li, a third-year physics student in the Mellon College of Science (opens in new window) , is a Pittsburgh native whose academic research has spanned multiple fields at both Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh.

Li received the Robert W. Kraemer Award (opens in new window) for her work as a first-year student. Her first research experience at CMU was in Stephanie Tristram-Nagle’s (opens in new window) experimental biophysics lab, where she studied novel antibiotic treatments for multidrug-resistant bacteria. She continued to make progress in the study of novel antimicrobials in the laboratory of Dr. Berthony Deslouches (opens in new window) at Pitt.

“One major takeaway I’ve had from all of the labs I’ve worked in is that they’ve taught me how to ask meaningful questions, design productive experiments to explore these questions, and disseminate information effectively to diverse audiences. I am incredibly grateful for all of the mentors that I’ve met during my time as an undergrad here at CMU. Working under the guidance of mentors who are both enthusiastic about research and leaders in their fields has greatly shaped my own passion for research,” Li added.

Currently, Li is conducting research into the effects of attention on different levels of the auditory processing pathway in the Lab in Multisensory Neuroscience (opens in new window) at CMU under the guidance of Barbara Shinn-Cunningham (opens in new window) ,  Abigail Noyce (opens in new window) and Ph.D. candidate Victoria Figarola (opens in new window) . 

“An area of focus in the lab is on how our brains allow us to focus attention and suppress uninteresting sound in complex auditory environments, and what particularly excites me is the potential to leverage the insights we can gain from auditory neuroscience studies to aid individuals with hearing pathologies,” Li said. “What I’ve enjoyed the most about working in this lab is being able to use both behavioral and computational methods in combination with noninvasive neuroimaging techniques to assess brain function in human subjects.”

For Li, much of what motivates her inside of the lab also takes place outside of it. As an undergraduate teaching assistant in introductory physics courses for both majors and nonmajors, she was able to explore her passion for helping others learn the sciences in the lecture hall setting.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time as a teaching assistant,” Li said. “I think it’s taught me how to think about problems from different perspectives, and how to work on my communications skills so that I can most effectively engage with a broad range of students.”

Additionally, volunteering at UPMC Shadyside has influenced her research interests and bolstered her professional goals. In this volunteer position, Li works with elderly patients to help prevent hospital-acquired delirium. “Working directly with patients has been a formative experience for me which has solidified my commitment to pursuing a career that can integrate research with health care.”

All of this work, both in and outside the lab, has inspired Li to pursue a combined MD/Ph.D. in neuroscience after her undergraduate studies. “In the future, I see myself working as a physician-scientist who is seeing patients while also teaching and conducting research at an academic medical institution.”

Katherine Parry

Katherine Parry is a junior studying electrical and computer engineering (opens in new window) and physics.

“Katherine is amazing and beyond deserving of the Goldwater Scholarship,” said Larry Pileggi (opens in new window) , the Coraluppi Head and Tanoto Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. “I was astonished by her passion and dedication to research. Her work is the caliber of that for a Ph.D. student, so I am excited to see the outcomes.”

“It is exciting to be recognized for my many years of intensive research,” said Parry. “I am glad to contribute to the prominence and recognition that Carnegie Mellon University and the College of Engineering deserve.” 

Parry’s research focuses on designing faster computers through alternative approaches to computation. 

“DNA sequencing, which results in new cures, and machine learning have only become feasible with faster computation,” explained Parry. “Interesting changes are being experienced as transistors are measured in 20-atom widths, and wire accounts for more delay than transistor gates. We're coming to the end of smaller circuitry. What will we do then? That is the answer I'm chasing.”

Parry is not a stranger to research. At the age of 16, she was working on a Mandelbrot generator for a science fair project. While focusing on increasing the processing speed, she discovered instances that had yet to be addressed.

“Mandelbrots are very square intensive, and I wanted to speed it up,” Parry explained. “I did some Googling and came across a couple of papers by T.C. Chen and R.H. Strandberg on how they cut the square computation in half by using Boolean logic to combine terms. However, I noticed some commonalities in the remaining elements that they hadn't addressed. I started playing around with the logic, and the elements got ugly and complicated. Tenacity is an important characteristic of a researcher. I persisted, and suddenly, I was looking at something incredibly beautiful. Those ugly computations suddenly simplified. The optimization of squares is measured in the number of additions required. The previous 16-bit squarer requires 35 adds; mine takes 29.”

As a homeschooled student in South Dakota, there were limited opportunities for Parry to discuss her findings with others. Turning to the internet, she came across a call for papers for the IEEE Symposium on Computational Arithmetic (opens in new window) (ARITH). 

“I quickly did my best to write a research paper that was due soon. They would know if I had done something original. Their response was an invitation to speak to the world's leading computer researchers at their symposium in Kyoto, Japan. Because of that talk, I became part of their community, and even though they are all across the world, we correspond often. The talk also resulted in my first published paper.”

When it came time to apply to colleges, Carnegie Mellon was the clear choice in her mind. 

“Not only does Carnegie Mellon have the most professors teaching computer design, but we have all the tools, and unheard of, we can tape-out computer chips,” explained Parry.   “I have had several very famous researchers from the ARITH community envious of my CMU resources and ask to co-author papers so I can provide more credibility to their ideas. It wasn't by chance; I made a very informed decision in choosing CMU.” 

As for her career goal, that is an easy decision, too.

“I want nothing more than to be a research professor at CMU,” says Parry. “I love doing research, and Carnegie Mellon University is a great place to do it.”

Professor William Widen Receives a University of Miami Provost Research Award

Professor William Widen was recently awarded a University of Miami Provost Research Award for his research project, “Responsible Regulation of Automated Vehicles and Corporate Governance.”  The Provost Research Award provides both salary support and support for direct research costs.

He is an expert on automated vehicle technology and safety, and recently published a paper “Highly Automated Vehicles & Discrimination Against Low-Income Persons,” in the North Carolina Journal of Law & Technology.

Widen teaches commercial law, contracts, and other business subjects at Miami Law. A cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, where he was editor of the Harvard Law Review , Widen clerked for Levin Campbell, Chief Judge of the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

Univision awards full scholarships to future Mavericks

Univision Dallas-Fort Worth has awarded two incoming freshmen the Univision Tu Futuro scholarship, which covers the cost of an undergraduate degree at The University of Texas at Arlington.

Elizabeth Labrada, a senior from L.D. Bell High School, and Juan Vera, a senior from Palmer High School, also received a $500 gift certificate from Nebraska Furniture Mart, a new laptop from Lisinski Law Firm, an iPad from Nissan North America and an additional $1,000 from the Erika Salter Law Firm.

“We are here today to recognize some wonderful new scholars at UT Arlington,” said Gayonne Beavers, director of admissions, at the scholarship presentation. “As a Hispanic-Serving Institution, UTA takes great pride in our partnership with Univision and honoring our new distinguished scholars.”

Joined by their families, counselors and school administrators, Labrada and Vera were celebrated for their accomplishments and futures as Mavericks. Labrada is planning on studying biology and minoring in business. She said her goal is to become an optometrist and open her own practice one day.

“I’ve always found everything about an eye doctor’s office so fascinating,” Labrada said. “This is all so exciting and nerve-wrecking. I’m just extremely grateful to have this opportunity.”

Vera plans to pursue a degree in architectural engineering. In coming to UTA, he is following in his older sister’s footsteps and continuing a Maverick tradition in his family.

“I feel architectural engineering is a major where I can embrace my skills for math and art,” he said. “It’s also an opportunity to serve communities that need to be revitalized. I’m motivated to come to UTA because my sister is an alumna. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have made it this far.”

Since its launch in 2021, the Univision Tu Futuro scholarship program has granted a total of seven scholarships for Mavericks.

"UTA, TelevisaUnivision, our audience and our partners have activated this partnership for four years,” said Mark Masephol, regional president and general manager of TelevisaUnivision. “With our eyes on the future, we look forward to continuing this program and doing more together to empower our youth through education. Univision Dallas-Fort Worth is the area’s leading Spanish-language station group and the most-watched television station regardless of language. UTA is designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education and received the Seal of Excelencia in 2022 for the commitment to accelerating Latino student success.
