The BBB® Charitable & Educational Fund Inc. announces essay contest

The BBB® Charitable & Educational Fund Inc. has announced its scholarship essay contest for area high school seniors in Ohio and West Virginia.

Submissions are being taken now.

The BBB Life Lessons Essay Contest is a theme-based essay contest that challenges students to reflect on living a life of integrity and ethics. The essays are submitted online and reviewed by a panel of judges. The top six essays will be awarded scholarships ranging from $500-$2,500.

The scholarship is sponsored by Byrider and open to area high school seniors attending schools in the BBB’s 64-county service area which includes 12 counties in Ohio and 52 counties in West Virginia. There is no GPA requirement to apply, and scholarship funds are used towards attending any career, technical, college, university, or trade school after high school graduation.

The theme for the 2024 essay contest is “Trust.” Trust plays a vital part in the marketplace. Students should describe how businesses establish trust with consumers through marketing, and how consumers can determine if the marketing is truthful and the company is one, they can trust.

“We are delighted to present this essay contest to our high school students as a meaningful way to instill the critical importance of ethics and integrity early on in their professional and career development. We hope that students take advantage of this contest to possibly receive a scholarship towards their future education and are proud to present this initiative to the communities we serve,” said Teresa Fox, chairperson for the BBB Charitable & Educational Fund.

Education roundup: Scholarships available to Stark students

Businessman offers funds to students in three counties .

The Richard T. Naples Sr. Education Foundation is accepting scholarship applications from students who live in Stark, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The scholarship includes colleges and universities, institutes for fine and performing arts as well as trade and vocational schools and institutes.

The deadline for this year's scholarship application is March 31. High school and college students can obtain an application online at www.wfboom.com. High school students also can get an application from their guidance counselors.

Wholesale Fireworks founder Richard T. Naples Sr. of Niles created the scholarship 22 years ago. The perpetual fund has awarded 181 scholarships for $500 and 353 scholarships for $800.

The Better Business Bureau Charitable and Educational Fund is seeking submissions for its scholarship essay contest.

The top four essays will receive scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500. The contest is open to high school seniors attending schools in Stark, Carroll and Tuscarawas counties. There is no GPA requirement to apply, and scholarship funds are used toward attending any career, technical, college, university or trade school after high school graduation. 

High school seniors will submit their essays online, and a panel of judges will review the submissions. Deadline to submit essays is March 26. Students, teachers and parents can read more about eligibility and instructions to apply and submit entries on the website http://bit.ly/BBBLifeLessons.

BBB sees trust as a function of two primary factors – integrity and performance. In the essay, students are asked to describe the role of integrity in a business environment and how it affects the success of an organization.

Canton-area students offered engineering scholarship

Applications are being accepted from Canton-area high school seniors for the Albert S. Richardson Engineering Scholarship. 

The one-year, $5,000 award will be made to one senior who is accepted into an accredited undergraduate engineering program. Once awarded, and by maintaining a 3.5 GPA, the scholarship may be renewed for three subsequent years of the student’s undergraduate education for a total of $20,000.

The scholarship honors the late Albert S. Richardson Jr. (known as AL), founder of AR Products, and his father, Albert S. Richardson, both of Canton. AL, a 1942 McKinley High School  graduate, earned bachelor of science and master of science degrees in aeronautical and electrical engineering from MIT.

Preservation Society offers Stark County funding

The Canton Preservation Society is offering a scholarship to a Stark County student preparing for a career related to historic preservation.

The award is for a maximum of $1,000 toward school tuition and paid directly to the school.

Eligible applicants include students in technical, undergraduate or graduate study intending to enroll, or already enrolled, in a program in historic preservation or a related field which includes, but is not limited to, Building Preservation, History, Architecture, American Studies, Urban Planning, or Museum Studies. The program of study must be at a U.S. university, college or institution. The student’s eligibility will be based partly on financial need and partly on the application materials, academic performance, community service and promise shown for future achievement, based on the judgment of a review panel.

Applications must be postmarked by April 1. For applications, call the Canton Preservation Society at 330-456-6881, or download a form in Word format from the website's News & Awards page (http://www.cantonpreservation.com/news.html).

Ohio EPA, academy announce scholarships 

Ohio EPA and The Ohio Academy of Science are accepting applications for the 2021 Environmental Education Fund scholarships. The deadline to submit applications is April 15.

The merit-based, nonrenewable scholarships will be awarded to junior and senior year students enrolled at Ohio public or private colleges/universities/community colleges and working toward careers in environmental sciences or environmental engineering. Students will be selected based on academic performance, as well as research, employment/internships, leadership, letters of recommendation from education or environmental professionals, and other criteria.

Up to $5,000 is available for students entering their collegiate junior or senior year in four-year and five-year programs, and up to $2,500 is available to students entering the second year in two-year degree programs. A total of $50,000 will be awarded this year.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
