Mitsubishi has laid out its vision for the future in North America with a new plan dubbed ‘Momentum 2030.’ This plan aims to nearly double the size of its lineup in the region, set a path for further electrification, and expand its dealer network to reach more consumers.

As part of the plan, Mitsubishi will introduce one completely new or redesigned vehicle per year between 2026 and 2030. Among these, two will enter new segments in which the automaker does not currently compete.

According to an unnamed dealer who spoke to Autonews , Mitsubishi is plotting an entry into the minivan segment with a rugged vehicle based on the D:X Concept that was previewed at the Japan Mobility Show last fall. The futuristic six-seater featured a plug-in hybrid powertrain, Delica-like styling, and chunky off-road tires to “convey a sense of strength.”

Mitsubishi also promised a fully-electric vehicle as part of Momentum 2030, and earlier reports indicate that it will receive help from Nissan (with which it has close ties) in getting this vehicle to market. Unfortunately, no details have yet been shared about the vehicle. It’s also been reported that Mitsubishi could launch a pickup truck, again with the help of Nissan.

In the crossover and SUV segment, Mitsubishi will introduce a more rugged variant of the Outlander next year that has “Subaru Outback-like” proportions, according to the unnamed dealer. It will be followed by a new small crossover that has a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and replaces the soon-to-depart Mirage as the brand’s entry-level model.

In addition to entering new segments, Mitsubishi will also expand its footprint in North America by setting up new dealerships in parts of the U.S. that it has never been to before. The new locations will feature an updated look, and will make the brand more accessible to customers than ever before. The automaker will also produce one of its new vehicles in North America, with the help of Nissan.

A year or so ago, I didn't see Mitsubishi surviving past 2030 in the US market without drastic changes. In my op-ed, I labeled it "just another Lancia waiting to die." Clearly, Mitsubishi was aware of the pickle it found itself in for the American market, as it's now announced a new five-year business plan to rescue the brand before the decade's end. Dubbed Momentum 2030, this ambitious five-year business plan will overhaul the Japanese automaker's current lineup, with one new or completely refreshed model to be launched every year between 2026 and 2030.

Mitsubishi is a Japanese automaker founded in1870 and is part of the Mitsubishi Group and broader Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Mitsubishi Motors officially started producing passenger vehicles in 1917, the Mitsubishi Model-A, before building a legacy as the manufacturer of off-roaders like the Pajero. Mitsubishi established a strong presence in motorsport, with models like the Lancer Evolution competing in WRC and the Pajero Evolution taking multiple wins in the Dakar Rally. Its best ever sales year in the USA was in 2002, when it sold 345,915 cars.

At present, the brand sells just four models in the US: Outlander , Outlander Sport, Mirage, and Eclipse Cross. The Outlander Sport will soon become defunct - a replacement has already been announced in Europe as a rebadged Renault that won't come to the US - and the subcompact Mirage will end production in late 2024, with a surplus of model production seeing it through the 2025 model year.

According to Automotive News , a new plug-in hybrid small crossover will launch in late 2025 as a de facto replacement for the Mirage, as confirmed by a dealer who attended the presentation of the new business plan. That's not the only model in the pipeline, though.

Leaning Into The Spirit Of Adventure

A passenger van is also expected, with a focus on outdoor adventure. It's believed this will be a production version of the D:X Concept - a six-seater plug-in hybrid minivan that launched at last year's Japan Mobility Show. This concept also appears in the shadowy teaser image accompanying Mitsubishi's announcement. The automaker will lean into the adventure theme and is planning a lifted Outlander Rugged Edition described as "Subaru Outback-like" in the same vein as the Outback Wilderness.

According to AN, there is also the potential for a small pickup truck. This won't be the Mitsubishi Triton/L200 available in other markets, however, as Mitsubishi is eyeing - but won't confirm - the potential of a compact, battery-electric pickup for the US market. Brand CEO Takao Kato previously said, "There is demand for environmentally friendly pickups with shorter driving range [...] so we would like to consider such a possibility as well."

Chaffin confirmed that Mitsubishi will debut two all-new vehicles in "segments in which the company does not currently compete." If one of these is the D:X minivan, then the other may well be a pickup. Whichever segments they fit into, they'll be a welcome addition to an aging lineup with ailing sales figures.

Multiple Steps To Electrification

Mitsubishi is one brand that has lagged behind the EV trend despite its ties to Renault and Nissan, both of which have several EVs already in production. While this might not be the worst thing, as EV adoption plateaus, the Japanese brand wants to embrace electrification beyond just the Outlander Plug-In Hybrid. It says the new onslaught of models will "advance with a blend of powertrains - hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric." In addition to the production D:X, we expect PHEVs to form a major part of this strategy, as this is an area where Mitsubishi has always been ahead of the curve. Standard hybrid powertrains will likely make up the bulk of its mass-market sales. But non-hybrid derivatives may still have a place in the lineup, described by Mitsubishi as "advanced-technology internal combustion engines" alongside the electrified options.

Mitsubishi Is The Big Winner In New Renault-Nissan Alliance

Nissan factories play a vital role in mitsubishi's future.

The Momentum 2030 plan will invest in North America by expanding the dealer network, but also by producing vehicles locally through Alliance assets. Those Alliance assets are courtesy of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, which means we can expect Mitsubishi vehicles to be produced at local Nissan plants. The likely candidate is Nissan's Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant in Tennessee, which already produces the Nissan Pathfinder, Rogue, Murano, Leaf, and Infiniti QX60. Production of the Rogue is reportedly moving to Japan for the next generation in 2026, and the Leaf may move to the UK , leaving capacity at Smyrna for a crossover and a battery-electric vehicle to be produced. The latter is massively important, as it would mean plug-in and electric Mitsubishis may be eligible for the $7,500 tax credit.

Grayson Rodriguez (shoulder inflammation) is nearing his return from the injured list, forcing the Orioles to get creative about how best to deploy their pitching staff that has the best ERA in the majors since the start of May. With the club facing a difficult schedule that includes 43 games in 45 days, the Orioles have started to plan for a six-man rotation to accommodate their deep well of starting pitchers.

“We would expect to go to a six-man probably here pretty soon with that kind of long stretch coming up,” manager Brandon Hyde said before Friday night’s 9-2 win against the Seattle Mariners. “So, we feel great about adding a really good starter right now into our bullpen. It’s kind of a unique deal but with Grayson coming off the IL, it’s just kind of where we are roster-wise.”

Baltimore hasn’t announced when Rodriguez will return, but Hyde said Friday that the right-hander wouldn’t need a rehabilitation start; the team has yet to name its starters for Saturday or Sunday. A rain out Tuesday and a day off Thursday have already forced the Orioles to shuffle a few pitchers around. They temporarily moved Cole Irvin, who’s 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA this season, to the bullpen to allow John Means to pitch on five days’ rest. Dean Kremer hasn’t pitched since Sunday and Corbin Burnes would be on track to start Saturday if he follows his typical schedule.

As the Orioles craft their rotation plans for the next six weeks, Burnes’ schedule is the first piece they plan to place in the puzzle. The right-hander is the only Orioles starter who has not been skipped through a turn of the rotation at least once this season, and for good reason. He leads the rotation in ERA (2.68), WHIP (1.07) and groundball rate (51.4%), living up to his billing as a Cy Young candidate.

“We kinda mapped out Burnes and filled in a little bit with the other guys on how we see fit,” Hyde said. “We’re not in that stretch yet, but it’s coming soon, so we’re trying to keep them all healthy as possible. Then when we have that stretch we can probably go into a six-man rotation, which does limit a bullpen arm, which does put some stress on the ’pen.”

To keep Burnes on schedule, the Orioles will have to use a modified version of a six-man rotation that skips the occasional starter every week or two. Regardless of whether he starts Saturday or Sunday, Burnes will be in line to make six starts over the next 45 days with a seventh start following the June 17 day off that concludes their stretch of near-everyday games.

That stretch won’t be an easy run of opponents either. After their road trip against the last place teams of the two central divisions, the Orioles will play 14 straight against American League East rivals, including eight on the road. They’ll then return to Camden Yards to host the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies, the top two teams in the National League East.

“Daunting is that many days without an off day, not the AL East part,” Hyde said. “The opponents we’re gonna face, record-wise, it looks like all the teams are playing well and are good teams. Without an off day in there, one, it’s going to be a challenge. And then the AL East, they’re really good clubs that can pitch and can hurt you. Hopefully, we go into that stretch as healthy as possible.”

The Orioles’ pitching staff is nearly at full strength, and a benefit of spreading out their starters now is limiting their total innings for the long run. Baltimore’s rotation contains three starters with workload concerns: Kyle Bradish, who partially tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow five months ago; Means, a former Tommy John recipient who began the season on the injured list; and Rodriguez, who has never pitched more than 122 innings in a season and just needed a break because of shoulder inflammation.

By maximizing the number of starts Burnes can make while giving their three starters with injury histories an extra day off between starts for a month, the Orioles can strike the rare balance of chasing every regular-season win they can while putting themselves in the best position to have a healthy roster for the playoffs in October.

“You don’t want to miss any starts, but if it helps you in the long run, obviously it’s a long season,” Rodriguez said last week of whether his IL stint could help him get through the rest of the year healthy. “I want to be healthy for September and October and that’s the goal. That’s what we’re trying to accomplish.”

Politics | Former city staffer removed from do-not-hire list by Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration, appeals from two other Lightfoot holdovers remain pending

Josué Ortiz, who was the director of digital strategy in the mayor’s press office, was notified last month that his petition to get off the city’s “Ineligible for Rehire” list was approved. Ortiz was fired and hit with the no-hire status after he and others on his team complained about treatment by high-ranking Johnson officials.

But the two others slapped with the city government employment ban — Dora Meza and Azhley Rodriguez — confirmed to the Tribune that their appeals remained pending as of this week.

Their ongoing battle to get off the list, which has traditionally been reserved for workers accused of substantive wrongdoing, became a public flashpoint in the early months of conflict between Johnson advisers and staffers who stayed on from the Lightfoot era or earlier. A Law Department spokesperson added in a statement Thursday afternoon, “The city does not comment on ongoing litigation.”

Ortiz now works as a press aide to 36th Ward Ald. Gilbert Villegas.

Johnson’s spokesman Ronnie Reese declined to comment, but the mayor’s press team has in the past defended the firings by noting it isn’t unusual for City Hall staffers hired by the prior administration to lose their jobs after a new mayor moves into the fifth floor.

However, Meza said in a statement to the Tribune that she was still “very much frustrated” at what she said was a lack of accountability on how the Johnson administration behaved toward Lightfoot holdovers.

“I’m happy Josué was removed,” Meza wrote. “I’m confused why Azhley and I are still on it.”

Rodriguez and Ortiz declined to comment further. An April 17 letter obtained by the Tribune shows Human Resources Commissioner Sandra Blakemore informing Ortiz his removal from the list was effective immediately, without elaborating on the details of his case.

The flap that started the saga began early on in the new administration when top City Hall adviser Jason Lee walked into a press aide’s office two days after Johnson’s inauguration and began yelling, according to a complaint filed by Meza with the state’s Human Rights Department and the city inspector general.

Meza and Rodriguez said they were upset by how Lee reprimanded them for not posting a photo recap of Johnson’s appearance at the NBA Draft Combine to the mayor’s social media pages, which Meza said was because they were livestreaming the funeral for slain police Officer Aréanah Preston. During the interaction, Lee “constantly hovered over” Meza as she sat at her desk, “raised his voice, used profane language, rolled his eyes, and kept holding his head in his hands,” according to the complaint.

Lee later told the Tribune, “I recall the details differently,” and denied being involved in their August termination.

Meza filed a separate complaint with the state attorney general’s office over a July 2023 conversation where Reese criticized how she and Rodriguez were performing their duties.

“Ronnie did not provide any measurable feedback for me and Azhley to improve upon,” Meza wrote. “Also during this conversation, Ronnie told Josué that Azhley and I laugh too much. When Josué asked to clarify, Ronnie said that we needed to work harder. In contrast, Ronnie would joke with male colleagues.”

All three staffers were fired Aug. 9. Later that month, they were sent letters by the city telling them they were being placed on the city’s do-not-hire list.

Reese, in an internal memo obtained via a public records request, accused the staffers of being insubordinate and complained that “senior press office and senior mayoral staffers were referred to in derogatory terms by former staff on official City of Chicago communication channels.”
